Books written for academic purposes have a great impact on the development and progress of science branches. In addition to these, popular books written about the field of science make important effects and contributions. One of the books that affect the recognition and agenda of the science of geography is the book titled "Why Geography is Important" by the famous US geographer Harm De Blij. The data of this study, which was carried out using case study, one of the qualitative research designs, were collected through the Turkish translation written by Blij. The scope of the book on geography subjects, what it tells and its usability in geography teaching were evaluated with 50 geography teachers working in different cities of Türkiye who voluntarily participated in the study. After the volunteer participants read the book, the data of the study were collected through an online focus group interview moderated by the researchers. The data transcribed after the recording with the consent of the participants were subjected to content analysis with MAXQDA software. As a result of the research, it was determined that the physical geography sections of the book were scientifically sufficient. It was concluded that the relevant work contains good examples and definitions in terms of geography education, but the human geography sections are sometimes biased due to ideological approaches but have satisfactory information. The book Biserica de alături [The church next door] addresses some of the lesser-known rites of the shepherds from the Romanian Carpathians, such as the marriage at the fir trees, the confession, the prayer at the tree, and eating tree buds at Easter. Laura Jiga Iliescu describes these rites following long-term research on the mountain plateaus and in the hearths of the pastoral villages at the foot of the mountains.

The work under review is devoted to the characteristics of the material culture of the Kazan Tatars of the late 19th – early 20th centuries. The author set himself the task to identify the main elements of the Kazan Tatars’ material culture, trace the history of its formation, and analyse its characteristic territorial and class differences. The work is based on the monograph of the same author, Material Culture of the Kazan Tatars, published in 1930. The paper evaluates the contribution of the journal “Inostrannaia literatura” to the reception of P.P. Pasolini’s work in Russia. The research is based on an analysis of the archives of the journal and all published materials related to Pasolini in it, such as translations of his works, informational notes, articles by Ts. Kin, G. and A. Bogemskii, a Literary guide to the 100th anniversary of his birth. Reviewing the materials in chronological order allows us to trace how the attitude towards Pasolini has changed over time, in which measure his creative work has been covered. The publications in the journal do not reflect sufficiently the importance of Pasolini as one of the most original and multifaceted personalities in Italian literature and culture — poet, writer, philologist, literary critic, cinematographer, and influential intellectual — mainly because of the originality of his poetic and prosaic works, which did not correspond in Soviet times to the idea of progressive literature, Pasolini’s scandalous fame, and negative assessments given by authoritative critics. At the same time, the publications of the last years reflect the aspiration to fill this regrettable gap.

In this study, Inger Furseth and Pål Repstad's book titled Contemporary Sociologists' Views of Society and Religion has been evaluated. Since the aim is to evaluate the book, it is not analysed in detail about the sociologists; it is focused on which conceptual tools of the theorists come to the fore and what kind of contributions they will make to the studies that will examine religious life. In this context, the evaluation text started by criticising the relationship of sociology and sociology of religion with sub-disciplines. Because it is stated by the authors that the approach aiming at the separation of sub-disciplines will lead to an isolated intellectual life. For this reason, it is emphasised in the study that the work is an introductory book that deals with contemporary theorists who open the door to the understanding of social science as a whole. The book underlines the dialectical relationship between life and thought by including chapters examining the biographical and intellectual tradition of ten contemporary sociologists. The authors emphasise that the phenomenon of religion has not been ignored in contemporary sociology, and discuss how studies have been conducted using the conceptual tools of leading theories. This sets an example for new research. In addition, the recommendations given for possible studies that will examine religious life using these conceptual tools serve as a guide for researchers. This study explores the realm of book reviews within medical history journals, an area often overlooked in the existing literature. By scrutinizing four prominent journals over a five-year period, encompassing 780 book reviews, this research elucidates prevalent trends and patterns. Findings reveal disparities in review volume and author demographics, underscored by English-language dominance. Challenges such as limited word counts and evaluation dynamics emerge as impediments to review quality. Proposed enhancements include relaxing word limits, conducting reader surveys, and fostering access to non-English literature. It is common within academia to hear that scholars and students should avoid writing book reviews. They are not peer-reviewed, can take a lot of time, and are often considered less prestigious than other forms of academic publishing. However, we make the case—as two scholars with experience as Book and Media Editors––that not only are book reviews a legitimate and important form of academic publishing, but the many benefits of writing book reviews outweigh the reasons for avoiding them. These benefits include having access to cutting-edge books, honing one's skill in scholarly synthesis and communication, gaining experience with the academic publishing process, and providing service to one's academic field. In this Writer's Forum, we illuminate these and more reasons for doing book reviews and encourage readers of all stages of their academic careers to consider writing book reviews. Book review of "Haller, Tobias, Karina Liechti, Martin Stuber, François-Xavier Viallon, and Rahel Wunderli (eds.). Balancing the Commons in Switzerland. Institutional Transformations and Sustainable Innovations. 2021. London: Routledge.

Anita Wohlmann begins her book about metaphors aptly with a metaphor: metaphors can become worn-out, and this is when they are often seen as risky. But they can also be recycled, restored, and repaired – brought to new life: ‘We can extend a metaphor’s longevity, we can repair it, or we can repurpose it (if need be) and thereby – in the spirit of upcycling – discover for new value’ (1). Wohlmann’s metaphors of ‘recycling’ and ‘upcycling’ ‘worn-out’ metaphors are wonderful because they show how language is a technology or a tool that can be used in multiple ways – that is malleable, as Wohlmann argues throughout the book.

In Reading Mediated Life Narratives: Auto/Biographical Agency in the Book, Museum, Social Media, and Archives, Amy Carlson, leveraging her background as a librarian, delves into the nuanced mediations influencing life narratives, with keen awareness of (im)materiality, (re)formatting, text versions, and the reading experience. Expanding upon Anna Poletti’s insights, Carlson highlights the critical importance of both materiality and mediation in the analysis of (self-)life inscriptions. She emphasizes embodiment as a pivotal concern in life writing scholarship, stressing the significance of understanding auto/biographical texts as objects. By delving into Sarah Kember and Joanna Zylinska’s concept of ‘original technicity’ (2012), which asserts that humans have always relied on external technologies to navigate life, Carlson articulates how human experiences are inherently mediated.

Book Review: WHITE, Lawrence H. Better Money: Gold, Fiat, or Bitcoin? 1st edition, Cambridge University Press, 2023, 250 p.

This book is an extended and formally mixed prose poem on the experience of becoming a mother, and particularly on spending the everyday every day with a baby, observing their development and attempting to record what one perceives. The author, Lily Robert-Foley is an American writer; she is also a translator, university teacher, and artist, and she is a playful thinker with an interest in feminist and queer resistance. Her previous publications range from a novel to a book on experimental translation; this is her first published book of poetry.
