AbstractPurposeMethodsResultsConclusions\nIMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONTo explore how people with Parkinson’s (PwP) experience the impact of attending Parkinson Boxing (PB) on their symptoms and quality of life.The authors NMAY and PeB conducted participant observations of four PB sessions and eight semi-structured interviews with PwP who participated in PB in Denmark. The empirical material was systematically analyzed using thematic analysis.Four main themes arose. The participants experience a sense of community from being part of a group where they share the same diagnosis. They described various bodily experiences related to their physical and cognitive functioning and well-being, as well as emotional experiences including feelings of joy, gratitude, and mental well-being. They are motivated to participate in the training sessions, and participation further motivates them to retain their exercise practice.The experienced impact of participating in PB relates to physical relief of symptoms and improved functioning in everyday life, as well as a mental lift, energy, and joy during and after training sessions. Participants described being motivated to attend PB and to continue their training practice. Due to the experimental interface of cinematographic space fiction that produces temporal and spatial intervals, architectural design can be explored via time-body-space relationships. In this study, Eskihisar Coastline/Turkey has been selected as an urban coastline, due to its potential as a public space where the body can be observed, much like all public spaces. It is being examined with an experimental surface exploration developed with the relations between fragments of spatial intervals within the context of the movement-body experience in cinematographic spatial fiction. So cinematographic spatial fiction is a spatial narrative displayed based on the time-body-space fragments. The study has explored cinematographic fiction as an architectural design approach through the notions of time-body-space shared between the disciplines of cinema and architecture. The research methodology is qualitative; coherent to the case-study. The experimental phases consisted of the fragmentation of video recording, the multiple exposure experiment, and the “kinesphere” experiment phases that visualized the inter-surface connection codes of Eskihisar Coastline/Turkey as an urban coastline. Rudolf Laban’s “kinesphere” approach, which questions the direction of bodily movement in relation to the limbs, is developed as a controllable, definable template for measuring the interval of body movement. This approach is handled the movement intervals over the proportions of the body as a measurable parameter through a geometric design approach. As a result, the surface articulations determined through the spatial intervals of experience produced urban furniture images. Cinematographic spatial fiction offers a geometry-based reading interval developed from the ratio-proportion of the body to the production intervals presented to the architectural design in the context of time-space through the produced urban furniture image. The interface designed in this study is expected to offer a solution proposal that can be developed from the body scale for the urban furniture needed in public spaces in the cities of the future. Philosophers of perception have been readier to postulate the existence of a visual field than to acknowledge sensory fields in other modalities. In this paper, I argue that the set of phenomenal features that philosophers have relied on when positing a visual field aptly characterise, mutatis mutandis, bodily sensation. I argue, in particular, that in localised bodily sensations we experience the body as a sensory field. I first motivate this claim for the case of haptic touch, and then generalise it to other kinds of bodily sensation. I demonstrate the theoretical fruitfulness of this notion of a bodily field for the debate on the phenomenology of bodily ownership. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Discussion of a sensory-driven architecture emphasises the need for a deeper and more holistic understanding of space. The collection of articles in this issue of ARSNET presents a variety of methods for engaging with the sensorial experience. These articles explore the process of measuring, interpreting, tracing, and constructing the spatial elements and spatial processes driven by sensorial stimulants, driving different projections of space. From the emergence of architecture that is more responsive to the diverse and subjective body needs in space to architecture that responds towards natural qualities as well as natural processes. Some articles also enable propositions of architectural form and programming with sensory-induced spatialities and temporalities. Through such projections, the issue creates multiple possibilities for sensory-driven design objectives which transcend contexts, practices and users, significantly expanding the sensory architecture discourse.

Purpose: In Western society, the measurement of weight is prioritized over a person’s bodily experience. Hermeneutic philosopher Gadamer warned against the emphasis on measurement, rather than experience, in the medical sciences. An examination of the complexity of the experience of weight provides the opportunity to shift focus from quantifying the connection between health and weight to the experience of the person being weighed. Methods: This qualitative hermeneutic study aims to understand people’s experiences of weight from the interviews of professionals (n = 7) and lay experts (n = 10). Interviews were analyzed using an interpretive hermeneutic method. Results: The interviews revealed that weight was experienced as a number imbued with meaning and bias, as a number that could be manipulated, and as a constant and anticipated bodily change. Weight change was expected and often unwelcomed, despite weight being a quality of the body that is always in flux. External measures of weight meant to monitor wellness and health inadvertently became an unhealthy fixation that prevented some participants from fully participating in life events and appreciating the stages their bodies were in. Conclusion: Weight change is a necessary condition of being human, and bodies are and will be constantly changing. To achieve health and harmony, one must fit together the acceptance of change and their bodily experience of weight. Social changes resulting a significant shift in philosophical thinking in the renaissance brought the idea of individuality to the forefront, radically changing the social requirements and desires of individuals, the ideas of freedom of all individuals collectively, their relations with society and their environments, and also their participation in urban life. As a result of the industrialization activities, wars and migrations experienced in the twentieth century, this direct participation of the individual in the urban space was negatively affected. Especially due to globalization, the changing physical appearance and quality of life of metropolitan cities have created disconnections in human interactions with the city and their bodily experience with the environment. Monetary system which have dominated urban life, has taken business life to the forefront separating the residential fabric from the zones where business life develops, and accordingly lively streets have been surrendered to motor vehicles over time. One of the social groups most affected by these changes, is the young generation. The cities where the scale has changed radically, the sacrificed areas were usually the recreational environments, and children's play areas. Within this context, it is also mentioned in the literature that adults (politicians, planners, and municipalities) easily ignore the fact that cities are also for children; the developmental characteristics of young people, their needs for age, play and experience necessary for their healthy growths are ignored. Therefore, it should be admitted that cities should have a lot to offer children. It is necessary to organize the streets, to plan the transit routes of motor vehicles, redefine new speed limits, and re-evaluate the streets to make them pedestrian-friendly again taking into account the possibility of danger to children. So, as a part of the theoretical background discussed in the context of environment and behavior theories, the debate covers how the urbanites, children in particular –every urbanite is considered as a body in this paper– are affected by the rapid change of urban space. Also, through the introduction of global models such as woonerf and home zone on how the city can regulate physical and social components that can contribute both to the socialization of adults and to children’s development and freedom in relation to their own age and needs, a fruitful insight is endeavored to be provided to the potential for these kinds of practices to be implemented in metropolitan cities especially in the residential fabric of cities.

There has been much discussion about the sense of ownership recently. It is a very controversial topic and even minimal consensus seems hard to achieve. In this paper we attempt to assess the prospects of achieving a better understanding of what is meant by ‘sense of body ownership’. In order to do so, we begin by addressing an objection on which the notion itself might depend, coming from the distinction between ‘inflationary’ and ‘deflationary’ accounts of the sense of body ownership. Once the path is clear, we will consider some influential ways of approaching the issue, which propose grounding the sense of ownership in the spatiality of bodily sensations, the affective dimension of bodily experience, and in its spatial dimension, among other things. We expect the results of our discussion will allow us to both identify the strongest candidates for an account of the sense of body ownership and to determine the challenges that must be met by competing explanations. This paper discusses the integrated study of the workshop entitled 'Re-Mapping the Visible and Invisible of Vefa-Zeyrek-Fener-Balat' and the conceptual theory behind it. Encouraging students to look beyond the boundaries of studio environment and explore the disclosed features of urban space have been a crucial part of this workshop. The conceptual framework of the workshop is based on the role of bodily experiences in defining the phenomenon of space in the context of visible and invisible features of the city. Vefa-Zeyrek-Fener-Balat districts in Istanbul is selected as a route to present architectural, historical and cultural; multi-layered nature of the field. Considering the bodily-sensory perception at the center of spatial experiences, the aim was to uncover layers of those sensual experience related to urban space. The authenticity of the methodological approach is to address the stages of urban space experience, to record the knowledge gained through this experience, and to express it through two-dimensional posters and three-dimensional models. Within phenomenological perspective, experiential mapping is adopted as an approach of structuring and representing spatial knowledge by body-subjects who themselves experience the place. Spatial knowledge acquired and represented by body-subjects is then transformed into design knowledge generated by/through group-works. Consequently, this design knowledge has been made visible as a solid material such as maps and posters enabling us to read the patterns of overlapping and intersecting layers of urban spaces.

Introduction: Mind–body approaches are flourishing to answer the need for support in an increasingly demanding world. To provide scientific evidence of their effectiveness and contribute to the discussion on the role of the body in the effects of these approaches, we carried out a field survey on one such approach, somatic psychoeducation (SPE), with assessments focused on anxiety and self-esteem. Materials and Methods: An observational multicentric longitudinal study was conducted on SPE clients (N = 114) before and after a series of 10 SPE sessions freely implemented by practitioners (n = 25) in the field of their own practices. A one-off external group served as reference. Results: SPE had two major effects: one is immediate, as one session lowered anxiety state by 30%; the other is in the long term, as anxiety trait decreased by 6.2 points at the end of the intervention, and self-esteem improved by 3.5 points. The absence of a practitioner effect allows us to generalize the results to the practice as a whole. Conclusion: The beneficial responses obtained simultaneously on anxiety and self-esteem after a 10-session SPE follow-up are of interest and are discussed, as they suggest possible behavioral changes. We attribute these results to the combined action of bodily experiencing and the enrichment of self-perception. In this paper, I will focus on the process of constitution of oneself as an embodied being and, more precisely, on the specific way in which one can experience oneself not just as an embodied self, but rather as the actual embodied person he/she is. I will start by describing the most basic way in which our embodied self is constituted, that is as a felt-feeling body and as the zero-point of orientation of all our sensations and perceptions. Then, I will show how our body can be constituted for us also as an instrument for action, leading to the experience of what Husserl called “I-can” (Husserl 1952, 159-160). I will argue that, even though in this latter form of body awareness we can experience some traits of our own personality, a further dimension of our embodied life – that is, the expressive one – allows us to have a more defined experience of the specific embodied persons we are. I will describe what “person” specifically means in my framework and, on this basis, I will show how the expressive dimension of our body can account for my experience of myself not just as an embodied self, but as the embodied person I am.

Background and purpose: On entering Cardiac Rehabilitation (CR), the female cardiac population shows greater fear of overexertion and sense of uncertainty than similarly affected men. The purpose of this study was to explore how women experienced the recovery process after a cardiac event and what impact the event had on bodily experiences. Methods: A qualitative, descriptive design, inspired by a phenomenological approach. Information was collected from 20 women through focus groups and individual in-depth interviews. The material was analyzed with a method of systematic text condensation. Results: The women's recovery after a CE could be a lonely and difficult process. Their own perspectives on what they need in the process is often overlooked, focus being on medical care and clinical recovery in the early phase. Returning home, the women suffered vulnerability, fragility, and insecurity, affecting well-being as well as activity levels. Lack of support and follow-up post-discharge seemed to disturb the progress of the recovery process. Conclusions: Helping the women regain confidence in their new bodies, supporting the personal recovery processes, and bridging the gap between discharge and enrolling in a CR-program could reduce personal stress and withdrawal, thereby empowering more women to start and complete CR programs. A book is a book – or is it? With present-day, affordable technology, we can scale a book to become a spatial object, or even a space in itself, of almost arbitrary size. We describe our design of and experiences with a generic interactive installation, called Viskbook, that provides a convincing illusion of oversize books, allowing the spectator to turn over the pages using natural and intuitive gestures. It provides a new media for exhibiting books in museums and elsewhere. It can be used for vulnerable and irreplaceable unique books, that otherwise would remain in the safe-box, and for books that may have no non-virtual counterpart and which may go beyond what we normally expect from a book. Viskbook has been used successfully for displaying historical sketchbooks, integrated in thematic art exhibitions, and for experimental books based on our own artistic material selected. An important conclusion is that oversizing a book, in addition to an enhanced visibility, creates a novel and spatial experience of the book.
