Context. The chemistry and Galactic velocity components of the star HD 65907 suggest that despite its young isochronal age of ∼5 Gyr, it is in fact a merger of two old Population II stars. Its low Li abundance is also consistent with a mass accretion episode. Aims. We determine Li and Be abundances for this star and evaluate its radial velocity time series, activity cycle, and spectral energy distribution in search of clues regarding the origin of this enigmatic star. Methods. Li and Be abundances were determined via spectral synthesis of their resonance lines using HARPS and UVES spectra, respectively. HARPS data were also used to study variations in the star's radial velocity and activity levels. Photometric data were adopted to evaluate the stellar spectral energy distribution. Results. HD 65908 is severely Li- and Be-depleted. Its radial velocity is nearly constant (σ = 2 m/s), with a small modulation likely associated with stellar activity, and the star shows no further signs of an undetected close companion. The excess infrared emission is consistent with a 30 K blackbody, which is interpreted as a debris disk surrounding the star. The post-merger mass, rotation rate, and evolution of this star are discussed. Conclusions. The low Li and Be abundances, in addition to the lack of evidence for a companion, are strong pieces of evidence in favor of the stellar merger scenario. NGC 5139 (⁠|$\omega$| Cen) is the closest candidate of a nuclear star cluster that has been stripped of its host galaxy in the Milky Way. Despite extensive studies through the last decades, many open questions about the cluster remain, including the properties of the binary population. In this study, we use MUSE multi-epoch spectroscopy to identify binary systems in |$\omega$| Cen. The observations span 8 yr, with a total of 312 248 radial velocity measurements for 37 225 stars. Following the removal of known photometric variables, we identify 275 stars that show RV variations, corresponding to a discovery fraction of |$1.4\pm 0.1~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$|⁠. Using dedicated simulations, we find that our data are sensitive to |$70 \pm 10~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the binaries expected in the sample, resulting in a completeness-corrected binary fraction of |$2.1\pm 0.4~{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| in the central region of |$\omega$| Cen. We find similar binary fractions for all stellar evolutionary stages covered by our data, the only notable exception being the blue straggler stars, which show an enhanced binary fraction. We also find no distinct correlation with distance from the cluster centre, indicating a limited amount of mass segregation within the half-light radius of |$\omega$| Cen. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present a statistical, photometric, and spectral energy distribution (SED) analysis to characterize the blue straggler stars (BSSs) populations in the Galactic old open cluster Berkeley 39. Berkeley 39 is a 6.16 Gyr old open cluster located at a distance of 3.99 Kpc. Gaia DR3 astrometry data have been used to estimate the membership probabilities using ensemble-based unsupervised machine learning techniques. We identified 21 BSS candidates on the colour–magnitude diagram, with 19 of them being detected in the Swift /UVOT UVW2 filter. We analysed the radial surface density profile and examined the cluster dynamical states and mass segregation effect. The SEDs of 19 BSSs are constructed using multiwavelength data covering UV to IR wavelengths. A single-component SED is fitted successfully for 14 BSS candidates. We discovered hot companions in five BSS candidates. These hot companions have temperatures of approximately 14 000 to 23 000 K, radii ranging from 0.04 to 0.13 R |$_{\odot }$|⁠ , and luminosities ranging from 0.16 to 2.91 L |$_{\odot }$|⁠. Among these, three are most likely extremely low-mass white dwarfs (WDs) with masses around 0.17 to 0.18 M |$_{\odot }$|⁠ , and two are low-mass WDs with masses around 0.18 to 0.39 M |$_{\odot }$|⁠. This confirms that they are post-mass transfer (Case A or Case B) systems. We also investigated the variable characteristics of BSSs by analysing their light curves using data from TESS. Our analysis confirms that two BSSs identified as eclipsing binaries in Gaia DR3 are indeed eclipsing binaries. By using high-resolution spectra acquired with FLAMES-GIRAFFE at the ESO/VLT, we measured the radial and rotational velocities of 115 stars in the Galactic globular cluster M 55. After field decontamination based on the radial velocity values, the final sample of member stars is composed of 32 blue straggler stars (BSSs) and 76 reference stars populating the red giant and horizontal branches of the cluster. In agreement with previous findings, the totality of red giant branch stars has negligible rotation (<10 km s−1) and horizontal branch stars have rotational velocities of 40 km s−1 at most. In contrast, the BSS rotational velocity distribution shows a long tail extending up to ~200 km s−1, with 15 BSSs (out of 32), spinning faster than 40 km s−1. By defining the threshold for fast rotating BSSs at 40 km s−1, this sets the percentage of these stars at 47 ±14%. Such a large value has never been found before in any globular clusters. It is roughly comparable to that measured in other loose systems (ω Centauri, M 4, and NGC 3201) and significantly larger than that observed in high-density clusters (as 47 Tucanae, NGC 6397, NGC 6752, and M 30). This evidence supports a scenario whereby recent BSS formation is occurring in low-density environments. Building on the recent release of a new Gaia-based blue straggler star catalog in Galactic open star clusters (OCs), we explored the properties of these stars in a cluster sample spanning a wide range in fundamental parameters. We employed Gaia EDR3 to assess the membership of any individual blue or yellow straggler to their parent cluster. We then made use of the ASteCA code to estimate the fundamental parameters of the selected clusters, in particular, the binary fraction. With all this at hand, we critically revisited the relation of the blue straggler population and the latter. For the first time, we found a correlation between the number of blue stragglers and the host cluster binary fraction and binaries. This supports the hypothesis that binary evolution is the most viable scenario of straggler formation in Galactic star clusters. The distribution of blue stragglers in the Gaia color-magnitude diagram was then compared with a suite of composite evolutionary sequences derived from binary evolutionary models that were run by exploring a range of binary parameters: age, mass ratio, period, and so forth. The excellent comparison between the bulk distribution of blue stragglers and the composite evolutionary sequences loci further supports the binary origin of most stragglers in OCs and paves the way for a detailed study of individual blue stragglers. The first magnetic field in a star other than the Sun was detected in 1947 in the star 78 Vir. Today, we know that about 10% of these intermediate-mass and high-mass stars have strong, large-scale surface magnetic fields whose origin has remained a mystery till today. It has been suggested that merging of main-sequence and pre-main-sequence stars could produce such strong fields. The massive star τ Sco is a well-known member of the group of magnetic stars and is a blue straggler given its apparently young age compared to that of other members of the Upper Scorpius association. Here, we present 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the coalescence of two massive main-sequence stars and 1D stellar evolution computations of the subsequent evolution of the merger product that can explain τ Sco's magnetic field, apparent youth and other observed characteristics. We argue that field amplification in stellar mergers is a general mechanism to form strongly-magnetised massive stars. Such stars are promising progenitors of magnetars, which may give rise to some of the enigmatic fast radio bursts, and their supernova explosions may be affected by the strong magnetic fields. Contact binaries are close binary systems in which both components fill their inner Roche lobes so that the stars are in direct contact, and in potential mass and energy exchange. The most common such systems of low mass are the so-called W UMa-type. In the last few years, there has been a growing interest of the astronomical community in stellar mergers, primarily due to the detection of gravitational waves (mergers of black holes and neutron stars), but also because of an alternative model for the type Ia supernovae (merger of two white dwarfs), which are again particularly important in cosmology where they played a significant role in the discovery of dark energy and the accelerated expansion of the Universe. In that sense, contact systems of W UMa type with extremely low mass ratio are especially interesting because there are indications that, in their case too, stars can merge and possibly form fast-rotating stars such as FC Com stars and the blue-stragglers, and (luminous) red novae such as V1309 Sco. Namely, the previous theoretical research has shown that in the cases when the orbital angular momentum of the system is only about three times larger than the rotational angular momentum of the primary, a tidal Darwin's instability occurs, the components can no longer remain in synchronous rotation, orbit continue to shrink fast, and they finally merge into a single star. The above stability condition for contact systems can be linked to a specific critical mass ratio below which we expect a system to be unstable. We give an overview of this condition and show how it can be used to identify potential mergers. Finally, we discuss a number of known extreme mass ratio binaries from the literature and consider prospects for future research on this topic.

We study an open cluster NGC 6940 using AstroSat /UVIT (Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope) data and other archival data. This is an intermediate age cluster (∼1 Gyr), located at about 770 pc distance, harbouring several exotic populations apart from normal single and binary stars. We identify members of this cluster using a machine learning algorithm, ML-MOC and identify 492 members, including one blue straggler star (BSS), two yellow straggler stars (YSS), 11 blue lurker (BL) candidates, and two red clump (RC) stars. The cluster shows the effect of mass segregation, with massive stars segregated the most into the cluster, followed by the equal-mass binary members and the single low-mass stars. We report the presence of an extended main-sequence turn-off (eMSTO) feature in this cluster and suggest that the age spread may be a contributing factor behind it. However, the effect of stellar rotation, and the dust absorption needs to be examined more comprehensively with a larger fraction of MSTO stars. All the sixteen sources mentioned above have a counterpart in the UVIT/F169M filter. In order to characterize them, we construct multi-wavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of 14 of these objects having no nearby sources within 3 arcsec. The BSS is successfully fitted with a single-component SED. We find that three BLs, two YSS, and one RC star have UV excess greater than 50 per cent and successfully fit two-component SEDs having hot companions. The parameters derived from the SEDs imply that the hot companions of BLs and the RC star are low-mass and normal-mass white dwarfs, whereas the hot companions of YSS are likely to be subdwarf B stars. We present a study of blue straggler stars (BSSs) of open cluster NGC 7142 using AstroSat /UVIT data and other archival data. Using a machine-learning-based algorithm, ML-MOC, on Gaia DR3 data, we find 546 sources as cluster members. Based on the location on the Gaia colour–magnitude diagram, we identify 10 BSS candidates, also detected in UVIT/ F 148 W filter. We study the variable nature of BSSs by constructing their light curves using the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite data. Two BSSs reported as eclipsing binaries in Gaia DR3 are confirmed to be eclipsing binaries based on our analysis and also show the presence of hot companions as per the multiwavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs). The physical parameters of the hot companions of these two BSSs derived by fitting binary models to their light curves and those derived from the SEDs are found to be in good agreement. Additionally, five more BSSs in the cluster shows UV excess, four of which are likely to have a hot companion based on SEDs. The hot companions with the estimated temperatures ∼14 000–28 000 K, radii ∼0.01–0.05 R⊙, and luminosities ∼0.03–0.1 L⊙ are inferred to be extremely low-mass (<0.2 M⊙), low-mass (0.2–0.4 M⊙), normal-mass (0.4–0.6 M⊙), and high-mass (>0.6 M⊙) white dwarfs (WDs). For the first time in an open cluster, we find the entire range of masses in WDs found as hot companions of BSSs. These masses imply that the Case-A/Case-B mass transfer and merger are responsible for the formation of at least 60  per cent of the BSSs of this cluster. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blue straggler stars (BSS), one of the most massive members of star clusters, have been used for over a decade to investigate mass segregation and estimate the dynamical ages of globular clusters (GCs) and open clusters (OCs). This work is an extension of our previous study, in which we investigated a correlation between theoretically estimated dynamical ages and the observed |$A^+_{\mathrm{rh}}$| values, which represent the sedimentation level of BSS with respect to the reference population. Here, we use the ML-MOC algorithm on Gaia EDR3 data to extend this analysis to 23 OCs. Using cluster properties and identified members, we estimate their dynamical and physical parameters. In order to estimate the |$A^+_{\mathrm{rh}}$| values, we use the main sequence and main sequence turnoff stars as the reference population. OCs are observed to exhibit a wide range of degrees of dynamical evolution, ranging from dynamically young to late stages of intermediate dynamical age. Hence, we classify OCs into three distinct dynamical stages based on their relationship to |$A^+_{\mathrm{rh}}$| and N relax. NGC 2682 and King 2 are discovered to be the most evolved OCs, like Family III GCs, while Berkeley 18 is the least evolved OC. Melotte 66 and Berkeley 31 are peculiar OCs because none of their dynamical and physical parameters correlate with their BSS segregation levels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blue metal-poor (BMP) stars are the main-sequence stars that appear bluer and more luminous than normal turn-off stars of metal-poor globular clusters. They are believed to be either field blue straggler stars (FBSS) formed via post-mass transfer mechanism or accreted from dwarf satellite galaxies of the Milky Way. A significant fraction of BMP stars are discovered to be potential binaries. We observed 27 BMP stars using UVIT / AstroSat in two FUV filters, F148W and F169M. We report the discovery of white dwarf (WD) companions of 12 BMP stars for the first time. The WD companions have estimated temperatures Teff ∼10 500–18 250 K, and masses 0.17–0.8 M⊙. Based on [Fe/H] and space velocity, we group the 12 BMP/FBSS stars as the thick disc (5) and halo (5), whereas two stars appear to be in-between. All the 5 thick disc BMP/FBSS have extremely low-mass (M < 0.2 M⊙) WDs as companions, whereas the 5 halo BMP/FBSS have low (0.2 M⊙ < M < 0.4 M⊙), normal (0.4 M⊙ < M < 0.6 M⊙), and high mass (M > 0.6 M⊙) WD companions. Our analysis suggests that at least ∼44 |${{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of BMP stars are FBSS, and these stars hold the key to understand the details of mass transfer, binary properties, and chemical enrichment among the FBSS. Blue straggler stars (BSSs) are formed through mass transfers or mergers in binaries. The recent detections of white dwarf (WD) companions to BSSs in M67 suggested a mass transfer pathway of formation. In search of a close companion to five BSSs in M67 that are known to be spectroscopic binaries, we study the light curves from K2 and TESS data. We use PHOEBE to analyse the light curves and estimate the properties of the companions. We detect variability in WOCS 1007, and the light curve is dominated by ellipsoidal variation. Using the light curve and radial velocity measurements, we estimate its orbital period to be 4.212 ± 0.041 d and e = 0.206 ± 002. The mass of the companion is estimated to be 0.22 ± 0.05 M⊙ with a radius of 0.078 ± 0.027  R ⊙, confirming it to be an LM WD with T eff = 14300 ± 1100 K. The estimated mass of the BSS, 1.95 ± 0.26 M⊙, is similar to that estimated from isochrones. The BSS in WOCS 1007 shows δ Scuti pulsations, although it is slightly deformed and likely to be formed through an efficient mass transfer. Though we detect a light curve for WOCS 4003 showing grazing eclipse with ellipsoidal variation, the estimated parameters are inconclusive. Apart from the 0.44 d period, we found smaller eclipses with a period of 1.1 d, suggesting a compact triple system. In the cases of WOCS 4003, WOCS 5005, and WOCS 1025, no eclipses or pulsations are detected, confirming the absence of any short-period inner binary with high inclination in these BSSs. Context. The particularly abundant presence of blue straggler stars (BSS) in Galactic open clusters offers favorable conditions for detailed studies on the statistical properties and the origin of the blue straggler population. With the help of Gaia DR3, the number of identified open clusters continuously increases, and the determination of star cluster members is more reliable. Aims. We performed a more thorough search for BSS in newly found open clusters based on Gaia data. Methods. We implemented a uniform membership determination for over one thousand newly identified open clusters with larger sky coverage based on the astrometric and photometric data from Gaia DR3. The membership probabilities of stars were assigned by the pyUPMASK algorithm. Then we estimated the physical parameters of these clusters by isochrone fitting on their CMDs and picked out BSS in the specific region of these CMDs. Results. We identified 138 BSS that had not been reported before in 50 open clusters. Conclusions. Compared with recent catalogs that present more than 1500 BSS in 339 open clusters, our new catalog increased the number of BSS in Galactic open clusters by about 10%, and the number of open clusters with BSS by nearly 17%. Blue straggler stars (BSS) are peculiar objects which normally appear as a single broad sequence along the extension of the main sequence. Only four globular clusters (GCs) have been observed to have two distinct and parallel BSS sequences. For the first time for any open cluster (OC), we report double BSS sequences in Berkeley 17. Using the machine-learning based membership algorithm ML-MOC on Gaia EDR3 data, we identify 627 cluster members, including 21 BSS candidates out to 15 arcmin from the cluster centre. Both the BSS sequences are almost equally populated and parallel to one another in Gaia as well as in Pan-STARRS colour–magnitude diagram (CMD). We statistically confirm their presence and report that both BSS sequences are highly segregated compared to the reference population out to ∼5.5 arcmin and not segregated thereafter. The lower densities of OCs make BSS formation impossible via the collisional channel. Therefore, mass transfer seems to be the only viable channel for forming candidates of both sequences. The gap between the red and blue BSS sequences, on the other hand, is significant and presents a great opportunity to understand the connection between BSS formation and internal as well as external dynamics of the parent clusters. We study an intermediate-age open cluster (OC) NGC 2506 using the ASTROSAT /UVIT data and other archival data. We identified 2175 cluster members using a machine learning-based algorithm, ML–MOC, on Gaia EDR3 data. Among the cluster members detected in UVIT filters, F148W, F154W , and F169M , we detect nine blue straggler stars (BSS), three yellow straggler stars (YSS), and three red clump (RC) stars. We construct multiwavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these objects to characterize them and to estimate their parameters. We discovered hot companions to three BSS, two YSS, and three RC candidates and estimated their properties. The hot companions with estimated temperatures, T eff ∼ 13250–31 000 K, are WDs of extremely low mass (ELM, ∼ 0.20 M⊙), low mass (LM, ∼ 0.20–0.40 M⊙), normal mass (∼ 0.40–0.60 M⊙), and high mass (∼ 0.8 M⊙). We suggest that systems with ELM and LM WDs as companions are formed via Case-A/Case-B mass transfer mechanism. A BSS is the likely progenitor of the high-mass WD, as a star with more than the turn-off mass of the cluster is needed to form a high-mass WD. Thus, systems with a high-mass WD are likely to be formed through merger in triple systems. We conclude that mass transfer as well as merger pathways of BSS formation are present in this cluster. Ultraviolet (UV) wavelength observations have made a significant contribution to our understanding of hot stellar populations of star clusters. Multiwavelength spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of stars, including ultraviolet observations, have proven to be an excellent tool for discovering unresolved hot companions in exotic stars such as blue straggler stars (BSS), thereby providing helpful clues to constrain their formation mechanisms. Melotte 66 is a 3.4 Gyr old open cluster located at a distance of 4810 pc. We identify the cluster members by applying the ML-MOC algorithm on Gaia EDR3 data. Based on our membership identification, we find 1162 members, including 14 BSS candidates, 2 yellow straggler candidates (YSS), and one subdwarf B candidate (sdB). We generated SEDs for 11 BSS candidates and the sdB candidate using Swift /UVOT data combined with other archival data in the optical and IR wavelengths. We discover a hot companion of one BSS candidate, BSS3, with temperature of 38 000 |$_{-6000}^{+7000}$| K, luminosity of 2.99 |$_{-1.86}^{+5.47}$| L⊙, and radius of 0.04 |$_{-0.005}^{+0.008}$| R⊙. This hot companion is a likely low-mass WD with an estimated mass of 0.24–0.44 M⊙. We report one BSS candidate, BSS6, as an Algol-type eclipsing binary with a period of 0.8006 d, based on the Gaia DR3 variability classification. We suggest that BSS3 is formed via either the Case A or Case B mass-transfer channel, whereas BSS6 is formed via the Case A mass transfer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We aim at establishing safe membership and evolutionary status of 11 chemically peculiar (CP) stars that are residing in the domain of the open cluster NGC 2516 and are frequently referred to as cluster members. We queried the Gaia EDR3 catalogue in an area with a radius of 1° and selected 37 508 stars brighter than G  = 19 mag. The cluster membership was determined in parallax-proper motion-space and 719 probable and 764 possible members were found. The obtained average astrometric and photometric parameters of the cluster are in good agreement with the most recent literature data. The evolutionary status of the target stars was determined with respect to Padova isochrones. After minor adjustments including the metallicity, the reddening, and the transformation scale variation, a perfect fit of the model to the observations over the whole observed magnitude range was achieved. Only 5 of the 11 considered CP stars could be classified as highly probable cluster members. Among the Ap/Bp stars with previously detected magnetic fields HD 65987 and HD 65712 have a high membership probability and the magnetic star CPD−60 944B is a possible cluster member. Further we discuss the blue straggler nature of HD 66194 and the magnetic star HD 65987. To our knowledge, HD 65987 is currently the only known blue straggler, with a field of the order of a few hundred Gauss. The most striking result of our study is that the strongly magnetic A0p star HD 66318 with previously reported very low fractional age does not belong to the NGC 2516 cluster at a high level of confidence. Globular clusters (GCs), being old and densely packed, serve as ideal laboratories to test stellar evolution theories. Although there is enormous literature on GCs in optical bands, studies in the ultraviolet (UV) regime are sparse. In this work, we study the stellar populations of a metal-poor and a rather dispersed GC, NGC 5053, using the UV instrument of AstroSat , namely the Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope in three far-UV (F154W ,  F169M ,  F172M) and three near-UV (N219M ,  N245M ,  N263M) filters. Photometry was carried out on these images to construct a catalogue of UV stars, of which the cluster members were identified using Gaia EDR3 catalogue. UV and optical colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) help us locate known stellar populations such as blue horizontal branch stars, RR-Lyrae stars, red horizontal branch stars, blue straggler stars (BSSs), SX-Phe, red giant branch, and AGB stars. Based on their locations in the CMDs, we have identified eight new BSS candidates, six probable eBSSs, and an extreme horizontal branch candidate. Their nature has been confirmed by fitting their spectral energy distributions (SEDs) with stellar atmospheric models. We believe the BSS population of this cluster is likely to have a collisional origin based on our analyses of their radial distribution and SEDs. BaSTI-IAC isochrones were generated to characterize the cluster properties, and we find that the observed brightness and colours of cluster members are best fit with a model that is α -enhanced with Y  =0.247, [Fe/H] = −1.9, and age =12.5 ± 2.0 Gyr. We present the first results of eight globular clusters (GCs) from the AstroSat /UVIT Legacy Survey programme GlobULeS based on the observations carried out in two far-ultraviolet (FUV) filters (F 148 W and F 169 M). The FUV–optical and FUV–FUV colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of GCs with the proper motion membership were constructed by combining the Ultra-Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) data with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) UV Globular Cluster Survey data for inner regions and Gaia  Early Data Release for regions outside the HST 's field. We detect sources as faint as F 148 W ∼ 23.5 mag, which are classified based on their locations in CMDs by overlaying stellar evolutionary models. The CMDs of eight GCs are combined with the previous UVIT studies of three GCs to create stacked FUV–optical CMDs to highlight the features/peculiarities found in the different evolutionary sequences. The FUV (F 148 W) detected stellar populations of 11 GCs comprise 2816 horizontal branch (HB) stars [190 extreme HB (EHB) candidates], 46 post-HB (pHB), 221 blue straggler stars (BSSs), and 107 white dwarf (WD) candidates. We note that the blue HB colour extension obtained from F 148 W − G colour and the number of FUV detected EHB candidates are strongly correlated with the maximum internal helium (He) variation within each GC, suggesting that the FUV–optical plane is the most sensitive to He abundance variations in the HB. We discuss the potential science cases that will be addressed using these catalogues including HB morphologies, BSSs, pHB, and WD stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With the equivalent area of a 16-m telescope, ESPRESSO in 4UT mode allows to inaugurate high resolution spectroscopy for solar-type stars belonging to extragalactic globular clusters. We determine the chemical composition of an extragalactic blue straggler (BS). The star has a G magnitude of 19.01 and belongs to the globular cluster Pal12, that is associated to the Sagittarius dwarf galaxy. Abundances are computed by using high resolution spectroscopy and LTE analysis. Two 50 min ESPRESSO spectra, co-added, provide a signal-to-noise ratio of ∼25 with a resolving power R∼70 000. This allows us to measure with good precision abundance of several (13) elements. Li could help to distinguish between formation models of BS; we are able to set a 3σ upper limit of Li = 3.1, which is still too high to discriminate between competing models. The abundances we retrieve for the BS are compatible with those of giant stars of Pal 12 published in literature, re-analysed by us using the same procedure and line list. Small differences are present that can be ascribed to NLTE effects, but for Mg the BS shows a large under-abundance. The most likely explanation is that the BS atmosphere is dominated by gas processed through the Mg-Al cycle, but we have no suitable Al or Na lines to confirm this hypothesis. We show that ESPRESSO with 4UT can be used to derive precise abundances for solar-type stars fainter than magnitude 19. At these magnitudes a proper sky subtraction is needed and in crowded field the targets must be chosen with utmost care, to avoid contamination of the sky fibre from nearby stars. Recent surveys show that wide (>104 AU) binaries and triples are abundant in the field. We study the long-term evolution of wide hierarchical triple systems and the role played by the Galactic tidal (GT) field. We find that when the time-scales of the secular von–Ziepel–Lidov–Kozai and the GT oscillations are comparable, triple evolution becomes chaotic which leads to extreme eccentricities. Consequently, the close pericentre approaches of the inner-binary components lead to strong interactions, mergers, and collisions. We use a novel secular evolution code to quantify the key parameters and carry out a population-synthesis study of low and intermediate-mass wide-orbit triples. We find that in |$\sim 9{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of low-mass wide-triples the inner main-sequence binaries collide or tidally-inspiral within |$10\ \rm Gyr$|⁠ , with direct collisions are 6 times more likely to occur. For the intermediate-mass sample, |$\sim 7.6{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the systems merge or inspiral with roughly equal probabilities. We discuss the relative fractions of different stellar merger/inspiral outcomes as a function of their evolutionary stage (Main Sequence, MS; Red Giant, RG; or White Dwarf, WD), their transient electromagnetic signatures and the final products of the merger/inspiral. In particular, the rate of WD–WD direct-collisions that lead to type-Ia Supernovae is comparable to other dynamical channels and accounts for at most |$0.1{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the observed rate. RG inspirals provide a novel channel for the formation of eccentric common-envelope-evolution binaries. The catalysis of mergers/collisions in triples due to GT could explain a significant fraction, or even the vast majority, of blue-stragglers in the field, produce progenitors for cataclysmic-variables, and give-rise to mergers/collisions of double-RG binaries. The leading method for the determination of relevant stellar population parameters of unresolved extragalactic Globular Clusters is through the study of their integrated spectroscopy, where Balmer line-strength indices are considered to be age sensitive. Previously, a splitting in the highly optimized spectral line-strength index H β o was observed in a sample of Galactic globular clusters at all metallicities resulting in an apparent 'upper branch' and 'lower branch' of globular clusters in the H β o –[MgFe] diagram. This was suggested to be caused by the presence of hot Blue straggler stars (BSSs), resulting in an underestimation of 'spectroscopic' ages in the upper branch. Over a decade on, we look to re-evaluate these findings. We make use of new, large Galactic Globular Cluster integrated spectroscopy data sets. To produce a large, homogeneously combined sample we have considered a number of factors including the radial dependence of Balmer and metal lines. Using this new sample, in disagreement with previous work, we find the splitting in H β o only occurs at intermediate to high metallicities ([M/H] > −1), and is not the result of an increased fraction of BSSs, but rather is due to an increased helium abundance. We explore the possible impact of varying helium on simple stellar population models to provide a theoretical basis for our hypothesis and then use the relationship between upper branch candidacy and enhanced helium to predict the helium content of three M31 clusters. The first magnetic field in a star other than the Sun was detected in 1947 in the star 78 Vir. Today, we know that about 10% of these intermediate-mass and high-mass stars have strong, large-scale surface magnetic fields whose origin has remained a mystery till today. It has been suggested that merging of main-sequence and pre-main-sequence stars could produce such strong fields. The massive star τ Sco is a well-known member of the group of magnetic stars and is a blue straggler given its apparently young age compared to that of other members of the Upper Scorpius association. Here, we present 3D magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the coalescence of two massive main-sequence stars and 1D stellar evolution computations of the subsequent evolution of the merger product that can explain τ Sco's magnetic field, apparent youth and other observed characteristics. We argue that field amplification in stellar mergers is a general mechanism to form strongly-magnetised massive stars. Such stars are promising progenitors of magnetars, which may give rise to some of the enigmatic fast radio bursts, and their supernova explosions may be affected by the strong magnetic fields. We present a far-ultraviolet (FUV) study of the globular cluster M30 (NGC 7099). The images were obtained using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS/SBC, F150LP, FUV) and the Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2, F300W, UV) which were both onboard the Hubble Space Telescope. The FUV − UV colour–magnitude diagram (CMD) shows a main sequence (MS) turnoff at FUV ≈ 22 mag and |$FUV-UV\, \approx 3$| mag. The MS extends 4 mag below the turnoff, and a prominent horizontal branch (HB) and blue straggler (BS) sequence can be seen. A total of 1218 MS stars, 185 red giant branch stars, 47 BS stars, and 41 HB stars are identified, along with 78 sources blueward of the MS which consist of white dwarfs (WDs) and objects in the gap between the WDs and the MS that include potential cataclysmic variable (CV) candidates. The radial distribution of the BS population is concentrated towards the cluster centre, indicating that mass segregation has occurred. The blue and red sub-populations of the double BS sequence appear mixed in the ultraviolet CMD, and no significant central concentration of CV candidates is seen in this cluster. NGC 7789 is a ∼1.6 Gyr old, populous open cluster located at ∼2000 pc. We characterize the blue straggler stars (BSS) of this cluster using the Ultraviolet (UV) data from the UVIT/ AstroSat. We present spectral energy distributions (SED) of 15 BSS candidates constructed using multiwavelength data ranging from UV to IR wavelengths. In 8 BSS candidates, a single temperature SED is found to be satisfactory. We discover hot companions in 5 BSS candidates. The hot companions with T eff ∼ 11750–15500 K, R ∼ 0.069–0.242 R⊙, and L  ∼ 0.25–1.55 L⊙, are most likely extremely low mass (ELM) white dwarfs (WDs) with masses smaller than ∼0.18 M⊙, and thereby confirmed post mass transfer systems. We discuss the implication of this finding in the context of BSS formation mechanisms. Two additional BSS show excess in one or more UV filters, and may have a hot companion, however we are unable to characterize them. We suggest that at least 5 of the 15 BSS candidates (33 per cent) studied in this cluster have formed via the mass-transfer mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present late-time images of the site of the peculiar jet-driven Type IIn supernova (SN) 2010jp, including Hubble Space Telescope images taken 2–5 yr post-explosion and deep ground-based images over a similar time. These are used to characterize its unusually remote environment and to constrain the progenitor's initial mass and age. The position of SN 2010jp is found to reside along a chain of diffuse starlight that is probably an outer spiral arm or tidal tail of the interacting galaxy pair NGC 2207/IC 2163. There is one bright H  ii region projected within 1 kpc, and there is faint extended H α emission immediately surrounding the continuum source at the position of SN 2010jp, which has MF555W = −7.7 ± 0.2 mag. In principle, the lingering light could arise from late-time circumstellar material (CSM) interaction, an evolved supergiant, a host star cluster, or some combination of these. Steady flux over 3 yr and a lack of strong, spatially unresolved H α emission make ongoing CSM interaction unlikely. If an evolved supergiant dominates, its observed luminosity implies an initial mass |$\lesssim\!{22}$|  M⊙ and an age |$\gtrsim\!{8}$|  Myr. If the source is a star cluster, then its colour and absolute magnitude imply an age of 8–13 Myr and a modest cluster initial mass of log(M /M⊙) = 3.6–3.8. Extended H α emission out to a radius of ∼30 pc reveals a faint evolved H  ii region, pointing to recent star formation with at least one late O-type star. Based on these various clues, we conclude that the progenitor of SN 2010jp had a likely initial mass of 18–22 M⊙. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blue straggler stars (BSSs) in M67 have attracted attention from observations and theory to unravel their formation mechanisms. In the series of Ultra Violet Imaging Telescope (UVIT on AstroSat) study of Open clusters (UOCS), here we report the detection of hot companions to 4 more BSSs (WOCS 2013, WOCS 3013, WOCS 4006, and WOCS 5005), using Far-UV photometry obtained in two epochs from UVIT. We characterize the hot companions to be low to extremely low mass (LM/ELM) white dwarfs (WDs) with T eff ∼ 13–23 kK, R /R⊙ ∼ 0.035–0.051, M /M⊙ ∼ 0.19–0.3, and age ∼25–300 Myr using WD models. Two BSSs (WOCS 1025 and WOCS 3005) showed UV excess, and may have a hot companion, but we are unable to confirm/characterize. 13 BSSs are detected by UVIT in the two epochs of data, of the total 14 present in M67. We have performed detailed analysis on 10 BSSs, including our previous studies. Five BSSs are found to have LM/ELM WD companions, suggesting Case-B mass-transfers (MT) to be prevalent in M67 (with a lower limit of 37.5 per cent, 5/14), along with other mechanisms. Three BS+WD systems have orbital parameters outside the limit for stable MT as per the models. We speculate the following three possibilities – their orbits are altered due to cluster dynamics, some may be in triple systems with LM/ELM WDs in an unknown closer orbit, or a modified MT mechanism may be required to enable their formation. Blue straggler stars (BSSs) are the most massive stars in a cluster formed via binary or higher order stellar interactions. Though the exact nature of such formation scenarios is difficult to pin down, we provide observational constraints on the different possible mechanism. In this quest, we first produce a catalogue of BSSs using Gaia DR2 data. Among the 670 clusters older than 300 Myr, we identified 868 BSSs in 228 clusters and 500 BSS candidates in 208 clusters. In general, all clusters older than 1 Gyr and massive than 1000 M⊙ have BSSs. The average number of BSSs increases with cluster age and mass, and there is a power-law relation between the cluster mass and the maximum number of BSSs in the cluster. We introduce the term fractional mass excess (⁠|$\mathcal {M}_{e}$|⁠) for BSSs. We find that at least 54 per cent of BSSs have |$\mathcal {M}_{e}$| < 0.5 (likely to have gained mass through a binary mass transfer (MT)), 30 per cent in the 1.0 < |$\mathcal {M}_{e}$| <0.5 range (likely to have gained mass through a merger), and up to 16 per cent with |$\mathcal {M}_{e}$| > 1.0 (likely from multiple mergers/MT). We also find that the percentage of low |$\mathcal {M}_{e}$| BSSs increases with age, beyond 1–2 Gyr, suggesting an increase in formation through MT in older clusters. The BSSs are radially segregated, and the extent of segregation depends on the dynamical relaxation of the cluster. Many close stellar binaries are accompanied by a faraway star. The "eccentric Kozai-Lidov" (EKL) mechanism can cause dramatic inclination and eccentricity fluctuations, resulting in tidal tightening of inner binaries of triple stars. We run a large set of Monte Carlo simulations, including the secular evolution of the orbits, general relativistic precession, and tides, and we determine the semimajor axis, eccentricity, inclination, and spin-orbit angle distributions of the final configurations. We find that the efficiency of forming tight binaries (≲ 16 days) when taking the EKL mechanism into account is 21%, and about 4% of all simulated systems ended up in a merger event. These merger events can lead to the formation of blue stragglers. Furthermore, we find that the spin-orbit angle distribution of the inner binaries carries a signature of the initial setup of the system; thus, observations can be used to disentangle close binaries' birth configuration. The resulting inner and outer final orbits' period distributions and their estimated fraction suggest that secular dynamics may be a significant channel for the formation of close binaries in triples and even blue stragglers.

We present UV photometry of the globular cluster NGC 1261 using images acquired with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope (UVIT) on board Astrosat. We performed point-spread function (PSF) photometry on four near-UV (NUV) and two far-UV (FUV) images and constructed UV colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs), in combination with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), Gaia , and ground-based optical photometry for member stars. We detected the full horizontal branch (HB) in the NUV and blue HB in the FUV and identified two extreme HB (EHB) stars. HB stars have a tight sequence in UV–optical CMDs, well fitted with isochrones generated (age 12.6 Gyr, [Fe/H] = −1.27 metallicity) using updated BaSTI-IAC models. Effective temperatures (T eff), luminosities, and radii of bright HB stars were estimated using the spectral energy distribution. As we detect the complete sample of UV-bright HB stars, the hot end of the HB distribution is found to terminate at the G-jump (⁠|$T_{\rm eff}\, \sim$| 11500 K). The two EHB stars, fitted well with single spectra, have T eff = 31000 K and a mass = 0.495 M⊙, and follow the same T eff–radius relation as the blue HB stars. We constrain the formation pathways of these EHB stars to extreme mass loss in the RGB phase (due either to rotation or enhanced helium) or a early hot-flash scenario. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blue straggler stars (BSS) are well studied in globular clusters but their systematic study with secure membership determination is lacking in open clusters. We use Gaia DR2 data to determine accurate stellar membership for four intermediate-age open clusters, namely Melotte 66, NGC 2158, NGC 2506, and NGC 6819, and three old open clusters, namely, Berkeley 39, NGC 188, and NGC 6791, to subsequently study their BSS populations. The BSS radial distributions of five clusters, namely Melotte 66, NGC 188, NGC 2158, NGC 2506, and NGC 6791, show bimodal distributions, placing them with Family II globular clusters that are of intermediate dynamical ages. The location of minima, r min, in the bimodal BSS radial distributions, varies from 1.5 r c to 4.0 r c, where r c is the core radius of the clusters. We find a positive correlation between r min and N relax, the ratio of cluster age to the current central relaxation time of the cluster. We further report that this correlation is consistent in its slope, within the errors, with the slope of the globular cluster correlation between the same quantities, but with a slightly higher intercept. This is the first example in open clusters that shows BSS radial distributions as efficient probes of dynamical age. The BSS radial distributions of the remaining two clusters, Berkeley 39 and NGC 6819, are flat. The estimated N relax values of these two clusters, however, indicate that they are dynamically evolved. About 10 per cent of stars more massive than ${\approx}1.5\, {\mathrm{M}}_{\odot }$ have strong, large-scale surface magnetic fields and are being discussed as progenitors of highly magnetic white dwarfs and magnetars. The origin of these fields remains uncertain. Recent three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamical simulations have shown that strong magnetic fields can be generated in the merger of two massive stars. Here, we follow the long-term evolution of such a 3D merger product in a 1D stellar evolution code. During a thermal relaxation phase after the coalescence, the merger product reaches critical surface rotation, sheds mass and then spins down primarily because of internal mass readjustments. The spin of the merger product after thermal relaxation is mainly set by the co-evolution of the star–torus structure left after coalescence. This evolution is still uncertain, so we also consider magnetic braking and other angular momentum-gain and -loss mechanisms that may influence the final spin of the merged star. Because of core compression and mixing of carbon and nitrogen in the merger, enhanced nuclear burning drives a transient convective core that greatly contributes to the rejuvenation of the star. Once the merger product relaxed back to the main sequence, it continues its evolution similar to that of a genuine single star of comparable mass. It is a slow rotator that matches the magnetic blue straggler τ Sco. Our results show that merging is a promising mechanism to explain some magnetic massive stars and it may also be key to understand the origin of the strong magnetic fields of highly magnetic white dwarfs and magnetars. Solar twins are stars with a mass and chemical composition similar to the Sun; therefore, they follow about the same evolution and can be used to study the past and future of the Sun. I review the evolution of lithium and beryllium in solar‐mass solar‐metallicity main sequence stars, using a differential spectroscopic analysis of solar twins relative to the Sun, allowing precise determination of stellar ages thanks to the precise stellar parameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) achieved with high‐resolution high S/N spectra. There is a clear trend of lithium depletion with increasing ages, while beryllium is only slightly depleted, suggesting a relatively shallow extra‐mixing in Sun‐like stars. I also discuss the possible connection between lithium and planets. Finally, I review lithium and beryllium in binary solar analogs with mass‐transfer events ("blue lurkers"). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Blue-straggler stars (BSS) have been identified in star clusters and in field populations in our own Milky Way galaxy and in its satellite galaxies. They manifest as stars bluer and more luminous than the dominant old population, and usually have a spatial distribution that follows the old population. Their progenitors are likely to have been close binaries. We investigate trends of the BSS population in dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSph) and in the bulge of the Milky Way and find an anticorrelation between the relative frequency of BSS and the metallicity of the parent population. The rate of occurrence of BSS in the metal-poor dwarf galaxies is approximately twice that found in the solar-metallicity bulge population. This trend of decreasing relative population of BSS with increasing metallicity mirrors that found for the close-binary fraction in the field population of the Milky Way. We argue that the dominant mode of BSS formation in low-density environments is likely to be mass transfer in close-binary systems. It then follows that the similarity between the trends for BSS in the dSph and field stars in our Galaxy supports the proposal that the small-scale fragmentation during star formation is driven by the same dominant physical process, despite the diversity in environments, plausibly gravitational instability of proto-stellar discs. The blue straggler stars (BSSs) are main-sequence (MS) stars, which have evaded stellar evolution by acquiring mass while on the MS. The detection of extremely low mass (ELM) white dwarf (WD) companions to two BSSs and one yellow straggler star (YSS) from our earlier study using UVIT/AstroSat, as well as WD companions to main-sequence stars (known as blue lurkers) suggest a good fraction of post-mass transfer binaries in M67. Using deeper UVIT observations, here we report the detection of another blue lurker in M67, with an ELM WD companion. The post-mass transfer systems with the presence of ELM WDs, including BSSs, are formed from Case A/B mass transfer and are unlikely to show any difference in surface abundances. We find a correlation between the temperature of the WD and the v sin i of the BSSs. We also find that the progenitors of the massive WDs are likely to belong to the hot and luminous group of BSSs in M67. The only detected BSS+WD system by UVIT in the globular cluster NGC 5466 has a normal WD and suggests that open cluster like environment might be present in the outskirts of low density globular clusters. This paper investigates reliable memberships and fundamental astrophysical properties of the old (∼8 Gyr) open cluster NGC 6791 using the astrometric and photometric data of the Gaia data release 2 (Gaia -DR2). We identify 2536 likely cluster members (≥0.6) in a five-dimensional (5D) parameter space using a Gaussian mixture model (GMM) clustering method. Based on these reliable 5D cluster members, we determine the core and tidal radii of the cluster to be R c = 3.69 ′ ± 0.23 ′ and R t = 16.96 ′ ± 2.29 ′ , respectively. We find evidence for the presence of mass segregation in the cluster. Among the likely cluster members, we identify six blue subdwarfs, 43 blue stragglers, and 27 red clump giants. We find that 34 blue stragglers (∼79%) lie within the core radius (< 3.69 ′ ) of the cluster, indicating that these stars may be formed by star collisions or by the evolution of primordial binaries within the dense core. The 27 red clump giants are used to accurately estimate the distance of the cluster. We determine a distance of 4118 ± 23 pc for the cluster using a Monte-Carlo simulation method. We confirm the presence of a significant zero-point offset (∼ − 0.055 ± 0.004 mas) in the Gaia parallaxes of the cluster members. Using the same simulation method, the mean proper motion and radial velocity of the cluster are found to be (〈 μ α cos δ 〉 , 〈 μ δ 〉) = (− 0.434 ± 0.008 , − 2.266 ± 0.010) mas/yr and 〈 V r 〉 = − 46.7 ± 0.6 km/s, respectively. Luminous blue variables (LBVs) are suprisingly isolated from the massive O-type stars that are their putative progenitors in single-star evolution, implicating LBVs as binary evolution products. Aadland et al. found that LBVs are, however, only marginally more dispersed than a photometrically selected sample of bright blue stars (BBS) in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), leading them to suggest that LBV environments may not exclude a single-star origin. In both comparisons, LBVs have the same median separation, confirming that any incompleteness in the O-star sample does not fabricate LBV isolation. Instead, the relative difference arises because the photometric BBS sample is far more dispersed than known O-type stars. Evidence suggests that the large BBS separation arises because it traces less massive (∼20 M⊙), aging blue supergiants. Although photometric criteria used by A19 aimed to select only the most massive unevolved stars, visual-wavelength colour selection cannot avoid contamination because O and early B stars have almost the same intrinsic colour. Spectral types confirm that the BBS sample contains many B supergiants. Moreover, the observed BBS separation distribution matches that of spectroscopically confirmed early B supergiants, not O-type stars, and matches predictions for a roughly 10 Myr population, not a 3–4 Myr population. A broader implication for ages of stellar populations is that bright blue stars are not a good tracer of the youngest massive O-type stars. Bright blue stars in nearby galaxies (and unresolved blue light in distant galaxies) generally trace evolved blue supergiants akin to SN 1987A's progenitor. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstarct: In Kawahara et al. (2018) and Masuda et al. (2019), we reported the discovery of four self-lensing binaries consisting of F/G-type stars and (most likely) white dwarfs whose masses range from 0.2 to 0.6 solar masses. Here we present their updated system parameters based on new radial velocity data from the Tillinghast Reflector Echelle Spectrograph at the Fred Lawrence Whipple Observatory, and the Gaia parallaxes and spectroscopic parameters of the primary stars. There is growing evidence that star clusters can no longer be considered simple stellar populations. Intermediate- and old-age clusters are often found to have extended main-sequence turn-offs (eMSTOs) which are difficult to explain with single-age isochrones, an effect attributed to rotation. In this paper, we provide the first characterization of this effect in young (<20 Myr) clusters. We determine ages for four young massive clusters (2 Large Magellanic Cloud and 2 Galactic) by three different methods: using the brightest single turn-off (TO) star; using the luminosity function (LF) of the TO; and by using the lowest L bol red supergiant (RSG). The age found using the cluster TO is consistently younger than the age found using the lowest RSG L bol. Under the assumption that the lowest luminosity RSG age is the 'true' age, we argue that the eMSTOs of these clusters cannot be explained solely by rotation or unresolved binaries. We speculate that the most luminous stars above the TO are massive blue straggler stars formed via binary interaction, either as mass gainers or merger products. Therefore, using the cluster TO method to infer ages and initial masses of post-MS stars, such as Wolf−Rayet stars, luminous blue variables, and RSGs, will result in ages inferred being too young and masses too high. The observational properties of a special class of stars (the so-called Blue Straggler stars - BSSs) in Globular Clusters are discussed in the framework of using this stellar population as probe of the dynamical processes occurring in high-density stellar systems. In particular, the shape of the BSS radial distribution and their level of central segregation have been found to be powerful tracers of the level of the dynamical evolution of the hosting cluster, thus allowing the definition of an empirical chronometer able to measure the dynamical age of star clusters. Context. Blue straggler stars (BSSs) are observed in Galactic globular clusters and old open clusters. The radial distribution of BSSs has been used to diagnose the dynamical evolution of globular clusters. For the first time, with a reliable sample of BSSs identified with Gaia DR2, we conduct such an analysis for an open cluster. Aims. We aim to identify members, including BSSs, of the oldest known Galactic open cluster Berkeley 17 with the Gaia DR2 proper motions and parallaxes. We study the radial distribution of the BSS population to understand the dynamical evolution of the cluster. Methods. We selected cluster members to populate the colour magnitude diagram in the Gaia filters. Cluster parameters are derived using the brightest members. The BSSs and giant branch stars are identified, and their radial distributions are compared. The segregation of BSSs is also evaluated with respect to the giant branch stars using the minimum spanning tree (MST) analysis. Results. We determine Berkeley 17 to be at 3138.6−352.9+285.5 3138. 6 − 352.9 + 285.5 $ 3138.6^{+285.5}_{-352.9} $ pc. We find 23 BSS cluster members, only two of which were previously identified. We find a bimodal radial distribution of BSSs supported by findings from the MST method. Conclusions. The bimodal radial distribution of BSSs in Berkeley 17 indicates that they have just started to sink towards the cluster centre, placing Berkeley 17 with globular clusters of intermediate dynamical age. We present the kinematics of Blue Straggler (BS) stars identified in the Canada–France Imaging Survey (CFIS), covering 4000 deg2 on the sky in the u band. The BSs sample, characterized through CFIS and Pan-STARRS photometry, has been kinematically decomposed into putative halo and disc populations after cross-matching with Gaia astrometry and SDSS/SEGUE/LAMOST spectroscopy. This decomposition clearly reveals the strong flaring of the outer Milky Way disc. In particular, we show that we can detect this flaring up to a vertical height of | Z | ≃ 8 kpc at a Galactocentric distance of R ∼27 kpc. While some small level of flaring is expected for extended discs built up by radial migration, we demonstrate that the very strong flaring of the Milky Way disc that we observe is likely more consistent with it being dynamically heated by the repeated passage of the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy through the mid-plane. We investigate the evolution of the radial distribution of blue straggler stars through a set of Monte Carlo simulations of star clusters under a variety of initial conditions. We used a novel technique based on the 'artificial oversampling' of the distribution function of the blue stragglers and control population to tear down the effect of statistical fluctuations affecting the determination of the relative distribution of these stellar populations. We find that a bimodal distribution, qualitatively similar but much less pronounced than those observed in many globular clusters, can naturally emerge as a result of the progressive migration of blue stragglers in the energy domain. The behaviour of the parameter A +, proposed as a 'dynamical age' indicator, has been also investigated. This parameter shows a relatively homogeneous and well-defined trend with the fraction of the elapsed core-collapse time-scale up to the core-collapse phase, while after this stage its evolution depends on initial conditions. We report the results of our study of the high-velocity (⁠|${\approx }160 \, \rm \, km\, s^{-1}$|⁠) runaway O star CPD−64°2731 and its associated horseshoe-shaped nebula discovered with the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. Spectroscopic observations with the Southern African Large Telescope and spectral analysis indicate that CPD−64°2731 is a fast-rotating main-sequence O5.5 star with enhanced surface nitrogen abundance. We derive a projected rotational velocity of |${\approx }300\, \rm \, km\, s^{-1}$| that is extremely high for this spectral type. Its kinematic age of ≈6 Myr, assuming it was born near the Galactic plane, exceeds its age derived from single star models by a factor of 2. These properties suggest that CPD−64°2731 is a rejuvenated and spun-up binary product. The geometry of the nebula and the almost central location of the star within it argue against a pure bow shock interpretation for the nebula. Instead, we suggest that the binary interaction happened recently, thereby creating the nebula, with a cavity blown by the current fast stellar wind. We present the dynamical status of the Galactic globular cluster NGC 6656 using the spatial distribution of blue straggler stars (BSSs). A combination of multi-wavelength high-resolution space- and ground-based data are used to cover a large cluster region. We determine the centre of gravity (C grav) and construct the projected density profile of the cluster using the probable cluster members selected from the Hubble Space Telescope and Gaia Data Release 2 proper-motion data sets. The projected density profile in the investigated region is nicely reproduced by a single-mass King model, with core (r c) and tidal (r t) radii of 75″.2 ± 3″.1 and 35′.6 ± 1′.1 respectively. In total, 90 BSSs are identified on the basis of proper-motion data in the region of radius 625″. The average mass of the BSSs is determined as 1.06 ± 0.09 M |$\odot$| and with an age range of 0.5 to 7 Gyr. The BSS radial distribution shows a bimodal trend, with a peak in the centre, a minimum at r ∼ r c and a rising tendency in the outer region. The BSS radial distribution shows a flat behaviour in the outermost region of the cluster. We also estimate the |$A^{+}_{r_\mathrm{h}}$| parameter as an alternative indicator of the dynamical status of the cluster; this is found to be 0.038 ± 0.016. Based on the radial distribution and |$A^{+}_{r_\mathrm{h}}$| parameter, we conclude that NGC 6656 is an intermediate dynamical age cluster. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

For a sample of 38 galactic globular clusters (GCs), we confront the observed distributions of blue straggler (BS) proper motions and masses (derived from isochrone fitting) from the BS catalogue of Simunovic & Puzia with theoretical predictions for each of the two main competing BS formation mechanisms. These are mass transfer from an evolved donor on to a main-sequence (MS) star in a close binary system, and direct collisions involving MS stars during binary encounters. We use the FEWBODY code to perform simulations of single–binary and binary–binary interactions. This provides collisional velocity and mass distributions for comparison to the observed distributions. Most clusters are consistent with BSs derived from a dynamically relaxed population, supportive of the binary mass-transfer scenario. In a few clusters, including all the post-core collapse clusters in our sample, the collisional velocities provide the best fit. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Here we discuss the case of the double blue straggler star (BSS) sequence recently detected in the young stellar cluster NGC 2173 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) by Li et al. (2018, ApJ, 856, 25). In order to investigate this feature we made use of two Hubble Space Telescope (HST) sets of observations, one (the same one used by Li et al.) probing the cluster central regions, and the other sampling the surrounding field. We demonstrate that when field star decontamination is applied, ∼40% of the BSS population selected by Li et al. turns out to be composed of field stars interlopers. This contamination mainly affects one of the two sequences, which therefore disappears in the decontaminated color-magnitude diagram. We analyze the result of tens different decontamination realizations: we find no evidence of a double BSS sequence in any of them. We therefore conclude that NGC 2173 harbors a normal single (poorly populated) BSS sequence and that particular care needs to be devoted to the field decontamination process in any study aimed at probing stellar population features or star counts in the LMC clusters. We analyze the position of the two populations of blue stragglers in the globular cluster M30 in the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. Both populations of blue stragglers are brighter than the cluster's turn-off, but one population, the blue blue-stragglers, aligns along the zero-age main sequence whereas the other, red population is elevated in brightness (or color) by ∼0.75 mag. Based on stellar evolution and merger simulations we argue that the red population, which composes about 40% of the blue stragglers in M 30, has formed at a constant rate of ∼2.8 blue stragglers per gigayear over the last ∼10 Gyr. The blue population on the other hand formed in a burst that started ∼3.2 Gyr ago at a peak rate of 30 blue stragglers per gigayear with an e-folding time scale of 0.93 Gyr. We speculate that the burst resulted from the core collapse of the cluster at an age of about 9.8 Gyr, whereas the constantly formed population is the result of mass transfer and mergers through binary evolution.
