Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disorder identified by hematological abnormalities including anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia. Complement system disturbance is implicated in the pathogenesis of SLE. In this work, we aim to study how a full assessment of the complement system, which includes the evaluation of its three pathways, relates to blood cell counts in a population of patients with SLE. New-generation functional assays of the classical, alternative, and lectin pathways of the complement system were conducted in 284 patients with SLE. Additionally, serum levels of inactive molecules (C1q, C2, C3, C4, factor D) and activated molecules (C3a), as well as regulators (C1-inhibitor and factor H), were evaluated. Complete blood cell counts were analyzed. Multivariable linear regression analysis was performed to study the relationship of hematological profiles with this full characterization of the complement system. After multivariable adjustments that included age, sex, SLICC-DI (damage), and SLEDAI (activity) scores, as well as the use of aspirin, prednisone, methotrexate, azathioprine, and mycophenolate mofetil, several relationships were observed between the C pathways and the individual products and blood cells profile. Lower values of C1q and C2 were associated with lower hemoglobin levels. Lower leukocyte counts showed significantly lower values of C4, C1 inhibitor, C3, factor D, and alternative pathway functional levels. Neutrophil counts showed significant negative relationships only with the alternative pathway and C1-inh. In the case of lymphocytes, associations were found, especially with functional tests of the classical and alternative pathways, as well as with C2, C4, C3, and C3a. On the contrary, for platelets, significance was only observed, after multivariable adjustment, with lower C2 concentrations. In conclusion, the serum complement system and hematological profile in SLE are independently linked, after adjustment for disease activity and damage. BackgroundIngestion of fluoride in drinking water has been shown to result in increased cellular markers of inflammation in rodent models. However, the approximately 5-10 × increase in water fluoride concentrations required in rat and mouse models to obtain plasma fluoride concentrations similar to those found in humans has made relevant comparisons of animal to human studies difficult to assess. As an increased white blood cell count (WBC) is a marker of inflammation in humans, we used available NHANES survey data to assess the associations between plasma fluoride levels in the U.S. and blood cell counts children and adolescents.   METHODS: Multiple linear regressions were done to determine the association of blood cell counts and plasma fluoride in publicly available NHANES survey data from the 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 cycles. Plasma fluoride concentration measurements were available only for children aged 6 to 19, inclusive, and therefore this subpopulation was used for all analyses. Covariate predictors along with plasma fluoride were age, ethnicity, gender, and Body Mass Index (BMI).  RESULTS: Plasma fluoride was significantly positively associated with water fluoride, total WBC count, segmented neutrophils, and monocytes, and negatively associated with red blood cell count when adjusted for age, gender and BMI.ConclusionOur finding that neutrophils and monocytes are associated with higher plasma fluoride in U.S. children and adolescents is consistent with animal data showing fluoride related effects of increased inflammation. These findings suggest the importance of further studies to assess potential mechanisms that are involved in absorption and filtration of ingested fluoride, particularly in tissues and organs such as the small intestine, liver and kidney.

Long-term exposure to low doses of ionizing radiation may adversely affect human cells and tissues of hospital radiation workers, especially peripheral blood cell count. Blood cell count analysis is a useful screening test in a routine medical checkup. A high or low blood cells count even in a healthy-looking subject leads to the suspicion of disease and it should prompt further investigations. This study was aimed to assess the effects of ionizing radiation on the hematological parameters of radiation workers at several governmental hospitals in Indonesia and correlation between years of employment and equivalent dose on one hand and the hematological parameters on the other. It included 74 medical radiation workers occupationally exposed to low doses of ionizing radiation at the Unit of Radiology and Radiotherapy and 83 controls. Fourteen hematological parameters were measured by ABX Micros 60 Hematology analyzer and the correlation between years of employment and equivalent doseas well as hematological parameters on radiation-exposed workers were tested by linear regression analysis test. Our study reported that red blood cell and monocyte counts were significantly higher in radiation-exposed workers compared to controls, whereas white blood cells, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, and lymphocytes values were significantly lower in radiation-exposed workers. A significant correlation was observed between equivalent dose and red blood cells (RBCs) parameter (P=0.001) with a decline in RBC level of 0.541×106/µL per 1 mSv increase of radiation dose. The present study recommends that further studies shoulduse a larger sample size and include various independent variables (genetic polymorphism, chromosome aberration, micronucleus frequency) to study the long-term effects of low-dose radiation exposure on radiation-exposed workers.

To assess iron overload, disturbed liver and hematological profile and secondary complications in ß thalassemia major (BTM) patients, the current study was carried on 408 subjects including 204 patients and 204 controls. For all 408 individuals; complete blood count (CBC), blood group, serum ferritin level and liver function tests were performed. Secondary complications were assessed by physical examination of pallor, splenomegaly, ascites, and hepatomegaly. The average±SD values of patients' CBCs and liver enzymes were: red blood cells 3.07x 1012±0.769x 1012/L, white blood cells 8.89x 109±2.849x 109/L, hemoglobin 8.01± 1.027 g/dL, platelets 321.68x 109±1.027x 109/L, serum ferritin 2773.3±1071.9ng/mL, alanine transaminase 117.12±32.001U/L, aspartate transaminase 84.77±18.223U/L and bilirubin 1.02±0.139mg/dL. CBC of control group revealed that all of the studied parameters were normal in them and BTM patients showed significant deviation from control in both hematological and hepatic profile (P < 0.05). Examination for secondary complications revealed that Pallor sign was observed in 79.6% of patients, followed by splenomegaly (64.9%) and hepatomegaly (9%). As far as the control group is concerned no complication was found in that group. Current study provides sufficient evidence to justify advanced therapies to overcome secondary complications, iron overload, disturbed hepatic and hematological profile of patients and overall offers insight into improving the quality of treatment for ß-thalassemia major patients. Objective: To investigate the relationship between blood cells count and chemical biomarkers with CAE and its severity in patients undergoing coronary angiography. Methodology: In this retrospective analytical study, patients who underwent coronary angiography in Dr. Hashmat's Heart Centre, Guilan, Iran from 2015- 2017, were studied. The patients were divided in three groups: patients with isolated CAE, atherosclerosis patients, and those with normal coronary arteries. In addition, CAE patients were divided into sub-groups, according to the Mark is classification. Results: Total 302 patients ware included. Among the studied patients, 84 (27.81%) had isolated CAE, 84 (27.81%) had atherosclerosis, and 134 (44.38%) had normal coronary arteries. No statistically significant differences were observed in the demographic characteristics of the patients among the groups except for age. There were no statistically significant differences in the means of the parameters of CBC test and chemical biomarkers among the groups. No statistically significant differences were observed in the demographic characteristics, the parameters of CBC test, and chemical biomarkers in patients with different types of the CAE. Conclusion: The findings of the present study indicate that blood cell counts and chemical biomarkers could not be considered as appropriate parameters for assessing the presence and/or severity of isolated CAE. The beneficial effects of Pistacia integerrima (PI) fruit methanol extract on some liver and kidney related parameters and blood cells count of paracetamol (PCM) intoxicated male rabbits were studied. Paracetamol intoxication caused remarkable increase in the serum ALT, AST and ALP levels. The PCM intoxicated rabbits that received PI extract orally at doses of 200 mg and 400 mg/kg b.w. /oral/day for 16 days showed significant reduction in serum ALT, AST and ALP levels (P<0.05). Liver microsections from PCM intoxicated rabbits treated with PI fruit methanol extract showed improvement in the liver histoarchitecture. The urine output of PCM intoxicated control rabbits group was significantly lower (P<0.05). The PCM intoxicated rabbits that received PI extract showed significant increase in urine output (P<0.05). The PCM intoxicated rabbits treated with PI extract also showed significant reduction in the levels of serum urea and creatinine (P<0.05). The renal creatinine clearance of PCM rabbits treated with PI extract improved significantly (P<0.05). Microsections of kidneys from PCM intoxicated rabbits treated with PI fruit methanol extract showed improvement in renal histoarchitecture. During this study, PI extract caused no improvement in the RBC count of PCM intoxicated rabbits. However, the extract caused significant increase in WBC and platelets count (P < 0.05) of PCM intoxicated rabbits. From the findings of the present research, it was concluded that oral administration of P. integerrima fruit methanol extract is beneficial for the liver and kidney related biochemical parameters and blood cells count of paracetamol intoxicated male rabbits. Introduction: The hematologic abnormalities constitute a reccuring problem in the general population. The HIV infection is a favourable situation for the potentiation of these various hematologic disorders. The aim of the study was to describe the quantitative and qualitative aspects of the three blood lines of our population of study. Material and method: It was a prospective crosssectional study of descriptive type having concerned the people received at the central laboratory of CHU de Yopougon for voluntary tracking from September 1st to September 30th, 2015. Results: We colliged 154 people among whom, a female prevalence was noted with a sex ratio M/F of 0.64. The age bracket from 18 to 29 years was represented (50%) with a 32.94 years median age ± 10 with the 18 and 75 years extremes represented by 50% of single people. The HIV infection prevalence was 20.37%. Anaemia was the most frequent hematologic abnormality (44.44%) its hypochromic microcitic form microcytic (50%) especially. The HIV positive patients had primarily a normochromic normocytic non regenerative anaemia (27.27%). Among HIV positive patients, 23 (65.22%) had a leuconeutropenia combined with lymphopenia at 23 (65.22%) and 12 had bicytopenia which consisted of thrombocytopenia and anaemia. A morphological abnormality of the three blood lines (red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets) was found in 57.41% of our subjects. Conclusion: To be in apparent good health, does not exclude the hematologic abnormalities presence. But an HIV infection presence, even in the absence of specific treatment, increases the risk or the degree of severity of these different qualitative and quantitative abnormalities. The sympathetic nervous system regulates many immune functions and modulates the anti-tumor immune defense response, too. Therefore, we studied the effect of 6-hydroxydopamine induced sympathectomy on selected hematological parameters and inflammatory markers in rats with Yoshida AH130 ascites hepatoma. We found that chemically sympathectomized tumor-bearing rats had significantly increased neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, leukocyte-to-lymphocyte ratio, and plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor alpha. Although our findings showed that sympathetic denervation in tumor-bearing rats led to increased neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, that is an indicator of the disease progression, we found no significant changes in tumor growth and survival of sympathectomized tumor-bearing rats. Objective: The effects of cigarette smoking on human health are serious and in many cases, deadly. The aim of the present study was to assess the extent of adverse effects of cigarette smoking on biochemical characteristics of blood in male population of Quetta city in Pakistan. Subjects and Method: One hundred and forty two male subjects participated in this study: smokers (n=71) and nonsmokers (n=71). The smokers were regularly consuming 11-20 cigarettes per day for at least 3 years. Complete blood cell count were measured by Nihon Codon fully automatic Hematological analyzer. Results: The smokers had significantly higher levels of white blood cell (p<0.027), red blood cell (p<0.011), hemoglobin (p<0.001) and hematocrit (p<0.006), whereas mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (p<0.009) and platelet crit (p<0.017) were significantly lower. Conclusion: In conclusion, our findings showed that continuous cigarette smoking has severe adverse affects on hematological parameters (e.g., hemoglobin, hematocrit, WBC count, RBC count, and platelet crit) and these alterations might be associated with a greater risk for developing atherosclerosis, polycythemia vera, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and/or cardiovascular diseases. Objective: The aim: We have aimed to develop method of risk assessment in patients with acute STEMI using blood cells count useful in everyday clinical practice., Patients and Methods: Materials and methods: 317 STEMI patients admitted to ICCU starting at 01/2014 to 06/2020 were included in this study. Data were evaluated partially retrospectively (n=214), 1st group) and prospectively, applying new risk-assessment tool in 103 patients 2nd group). Study groups did not differ in terms of all clinical characteristics., Results: Results: To evaluate criteria of severity of in-hospital complication we have created in-hospital complication index (HCI), composed according to number of adverse events per patient. Based on correlation analyses we have composed complex WBC-platelets (WBC-PLT) index = ((GRA - MON) / LYM) · 10 + PDWc + P-LCR). In the 1st study group WBC-PLT index was associated with in-hospital complications' index and correlated with neutrophil-leukocytes ratio (NLR) (p<0,001 and p<0,0005 respectively). WBC-PLT index > 137 appeared to be mildly associated with increased risk of adverse in-hospital outcomes (with specificity of 78 % and low sensitivity of 64 %, AUC- 0,72). Further prospective study of WBC-PLT index measured on the first STEMI-day (group 2) revealed that this parameter was more informative regarding association with adverse in-hospital events whereas NLR had low accuracy in risk assessment., Conclusion: Conclusions: WBC-PLT index assessed on the first STEMI day may be used as a tool for detection of patients at risk of adverse in-hospital events in the every-day clinical practice.

Objective: To explore the clinical application value of routine indicators such as blood routine and liver and kidney function in auxiliary diagnosis and prognosis of COVID-19 patients. Methods: SNK-q and other methods were used to retrospectively analyzed the differences of blood routine test, liver and kidney function and other inflammatory indexes of 30 patients with covid-19, 29 patients with other viral pneumonia, 35 patients with influenza A/B and 25 healthy persons from January 28 to February 14, 2020 in Xiangya Hospital of Central South University. Results: The neutrophils count increased gradually in COVID-19 group, influenza A/B group and other types of viral pneumonia group, and the difference between COVID-19 group and other viral pneumonia groups was statistically significant( H =-19.064, P< 0.05); The lymphocyte count decreased gradually in the control group, influenza A/B group, other viral pneumonia group and COVID-19 group. In addition, DB, UA and GLU were also different among groups. Subgroup analysis showed that there were statistically significant differences in N( F= 9.581, t= -0.152, P< 0.05), N%( F= 5.723, t= -0.600, P< 0.05), NLR( F= 4.773, t= -1.161, P< 0.05), PCT( F= 17.464, t= -1.477, P< 0.05)and CRP( F= 7.656, t= -1.973, P< 0.05) between patients with lung involvement +-++ and patients with lung involvement +++-++++. There were statistically significant differences in NLR( F= 63.931, t= -2.815, P< 0.01), AST( F= 15.704, t= -1.930, P< 0.01), ALT( F= 35.551, t= -2.199, P< 0.01), LDH( F= 7.715, t= -2.703, P< 0.05) and GLU( F= 6.306, t= -5.116, P< 0.05) between the light+common subgroup and the heavy+critical subgroup of COVID-19 clinical classification. Correlation analysis showed that clinical stage and imaging credit period were significantly correlated with NLR ( r =0.406 , P =0.026; r =0.397 , P =0.030), ALT ( r =0.403 , P =0.049; r =0.418 , P =0.047), LDH ( r =0.543 , P <0.01; r =0.643 , P <0.01) and GLU( r= 0.750 , P <0.01; r =0.471 , P =0.042). A total of 5 principal components were extracted from all the included indicators, and the comprehensive information extraction rate was 82.86%. Indicators of a large load included Ur, PCT and CRP in PC1; ALT, AST and GLU in PC2; N%, L%, L and NLR in PC3. It indicated that the indicators of acute infection, liver function and blood routine had certein warning effect on disease surveillance. The results of ROC curve analysis showed that the combined detection of N+TB+Urea was the best practice to distinguish COVID-19 and other viral pneumonia, while the combined detection of N+L+UA was the most effective solution to make a distinction between COVID-19 and influenza A/B patients. In the aspect of disease evaluation, NL+LDH+GLU+ALT combined detection represent the best diagnostic performance to distinguish the clinical stage of light+common type and heavy+critical type, achieving the AUC (ROC) to 0.904, with the sensitivity 75% and the specificity 100% at the cut-off value of 0.477. Conclusion: In addition to etiology and imaging examination, doctors can also improve the routine laboratory tests such as blood routine test, liver and kidney function to assist diagnosis and disease prediction of patients with respiratory tract infection.

This study reports differential blood cells counts and their correlations with creatine kinase (CK) and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients and normal subjects. Peripheral blood samples were obtained from all 39 AMI patients and 35 controls for blood cell counts and CK and CRP analyses. Total WBC, WBC fractions, RBC and platelets were measured with an automated hematology analyzer. The results showed a significant increase in total WBC (8.688 × 10(9)/L versus 6.148 × 10(9)/L), monocytes (1.271 versus 0.497 × 10(9)/L), and neutrophils (8.367 versus 3.223 × 10(9)/L) counts in AMI patients than controls. The RBC count was significantly less in AMI patients (4.638 × 10(12)/L) as compared to controls (5.105 × 10(12)/L). However, there was no significant difference in lymphocytes, eosinophils, basophils and platelet counts between AMI patients and controls. Both, serum CK (215.38 ± 43.15 versus 100.82 ± 8.86 U/L) and CRP (29.49 ± 7.61 versus 3.48 ± 0.60 mg/L) were significantly higher in AMI patients as compared to controls. Age of the subjects was neither correlated with blood cell counts nor CK indicating the validity of these markers irrespective of patient age. A significant correlation was observed between WBC counts and CK (R = 0.242, P = 0.041) as well as CRP (R = 0.416, P = 0.000). In conclusion, this study clearly showed significant increase in total and differential leukocyte counts indicating a pro-inflammatory cascade in AMI patients. A significant correlation between WBC counts and CK or CRP levels suggest a possible biomarker value of WBC for a quick prediction of both myocardial necrosis and inflammation in AMI patients.
