Seed size is an important agronomic trait that indicates seed quality. In legumes, pods with equal and larger seeds remain the first preference of farmers and consumers. Genetic understanding related to seed size including seed allometric traits has been limited in the case of peas. To fill this void the findings presented here used the genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to identify novel candidate gene(s) putatively linked with seed size in Pisum sativum L. The study was conducted on 240 Pea Single Plant Plus Collection (PSPPC) panels of pea germplasm. Allometric traits measured included seed_length, seed_width, seed_thickness, seed_volume, seed_biomass, and seed_biomass by volume (SB_V). GWAS was performed using the Genome Association and Prediction Integrated Tool (GAPIT) on R-studio. The Bayesian information and Linkage-disequilibrium Iteratively Nested Keyway (BLINK) model provided significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) linked with all the seed allometric traits. When analyzed the genomic regions of these SNPs provided a list of candidate genes that may be related to seed size. The present study thus provides a list of significant SNPs and relevant genes viz. Psat2g072000 for seed_length, Psat4g104320 for seed_width, Psat6g125800 and Psat6g125840 for seed_thickness, Psat6g228320 for seed_volume, Psat2g143920 for seed_biomass, and Psat2g120400 for SB_V which may prove useful in the improvement of pea seed size using breeding programs or CRISPR intervention. Understanding the genetic basis of seed size could lead to crop development with desirable seed characteristics, such as equal and larger-sized seeds with maximum yield and higher nutritional content. Abstract Pupil size and blink rates are heritable but the extent to which they interact with one another has not been properly investigated. Though changes in pupil size due to eye blinks have been reported, they are considered a pupillary artifact. In this study we used the HCP 7T fMRI dataset with resting state eye-tracking data obtained in monozygotic and dizygotic twins to assess their heritability and their interactions. For this purpose, we characterized the pupil dilation (positive peak) and constriction (negative peak) that followed blink events, which we describe as blink-induced pupillary response (BIPR). We show that the BIPR is highly consistent with a positive dilatory peak (D-peak) around 500ms and a negative constricting peak (C-peak) around 1s. These patterns were reproducible within- and between-subjects across two time points and differed by vigilance state (vigilant versus drowsy). By comparing BIPR between monozygotic and dizygotic twins we show that BIPR have a heritable component with significant additive genetic (A) and environmental (E) factors dominating the structural equation models, particularly in the time-domain for both D- and C-peaks (a2 between 42 and 49%) and shared effects (C) as observed in the amplitude domain for the C-peak. Blink duration, pupil size and blink rate were also found to be highly heritable (a2 up to 62% for pupil size). Our study provides evidence of that shared environmental and additive genetic factors influence BIPR and indicates that BIPR should not be treated as a coincidental artefact. Instead BIPR appears to be a component of a larger oculomotor system that we label here as Oculomotor Adaptive System, that is genetically determined.

• Spontaneous blink rate in Parkinson's disease increases during walking. • Blinking during gait has a frequency specific deployment in the subthalamic nucleus. • Striatal dopamine influences spontaneous blink. Both blinking and walking are altered in Parkinson's disease and both motor outputs have been shown to be linked in healthy subjects. Additionally, studies suggest an involvement of basal ganglia activity and striatal dopamine in blink generation. We investigated the role of the basal ganglia circuitry on spontaneous blinking and if this role is dependent on movement state and striatal dopamine. Methods: We analysed subthalamic nucleus (STN) activity in seven chronically implanted patients for deep brain stimulation (DBS) with respect to blinks and movement state (resting state and unperturbed walking). Neurophysiological recordings were combined with individual molecular brain imaging assessing the dopamine reuptake transporter (DAT) density for the left and right striatum separately. We found a significantly higher blink rate during walking compared to resting. The blink rate during walking positively correlated with the DAT density of the left caudate nucleus. During walking only, spontaneous blinking was followed by an increase in the right STN beta power and a bilateral subthalamic phase reset in the low frequencies. The right STN blink-related beta power modulation correlated negatively with the DAT density of the contralateral putamen. The left STN blink-related beta power correlated with the DAT density of the putamen in the less dopamine-depleted hemisphere. Both correlations were specific to the walking condition and to beta power following a blink. Our findings show that spontaneous blinking is related to striatal dopamine and has a frequency specific deployment in the STN. This correlation depends on the current movement state such as walking. This work indicates that subcortical activity following a motor event as well as the relationship between dopamine and motor events can be dependent on the motor state. Blinks, the closing and opening of the eyelids, are used in a wide array of fields where human function and behavior are studied. In data from video-based eye trackers, blink rate and duration are often estimated from the pupil-size signal. However, blinks and their parameters can be estimated only indirectly from this signal, since it does not explicitly contain information about the eyelid position. We ask whether blinks detected from an eye openness signal that estimates the distance between the eyelids (EO blinks) are comparable to blinks detected with a traditional algorithm using the pupil-size signal (PS blinks) and how robust blink detection is when data quality is low. In terms of rate, there was an almost-perfect overlap between EO and PS blink (F1 score: 0.98) when the head was in the center of the eye tracker's tracking range where data quality was high and a high overlap (F1 score 0.94) when the head was at the edge of the tracking range where data quality was worse. When there was a difference in blink rate between EO and PS blinks, it was mainly due to data loss in the pupil-size signal. Blink durations were about 60 ms longer in EO blinks compared to PS blinks. Moreover, the dynamics of EO blinks was similar to results from previous literature. We conclude that the eye openness signal together with our proposed blink detection algorithm provides an advantageous method to detect and describe blinks in greater detail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Eye movement tests remain significantly underutilized in emergency departments and primary healthcare units, despite their superior diagnostic sensitivity compared to neuroimaging modalities for the differential diagnosis of acute vertigo. This underutilization may be attributed to a potential lack of awareness regarding these tests and the absence of appropriate tools for detecting nystagmus. This study aimed to develop a nystagmus measurement algorithm using a lightweight deep-learning model that recognizes the ocular regions. Method: The deep learning model was used to segment the eye regions, detect blinking, and determine the pupil center. The model was trained using images extracted from video clips of a clinical battery of eye movement tests and synthesized images reproducing real eye movement scenarios using virtual reality. Each eye image was annotated with segmentationmasks of the sclera, iris, and pupil, with gaze vectors of the pupil center for eye tracking. We conducted a comprehensive evaluation of model performance and its execution speeds in comparison to various alternative models using metrics that are suitable for the tasks. Results: The mean Intersection over Union values of the segmentation model ranged from 0.90 to 0.97 for different classes (sclera, iris, and pupil) across types of images (synthetic vs. real-world images). Additionally, the mean absolute error for eye tracking was 0.595 for real-world data and the F1 score for blink detection was = 0.95, which indicates our model is performing at a very high level of accuracy. Execution speed was also the most rapid for ocular object segmentation under the same hardware condition as compared to alternative models. The prediction for horizontal and vertical nystagmus in real eye movement video revealed high accuracy with a strong correlation between the observed and predicted values (r = 0.9949 for horizontal and r = 0.9950 for vertical; both p < 0.05). Conclusion: The potential of our model, which can automatically segment ocular regions and track nystagmus in real time from eye movement videos, holds significant promise for emergency settings or remote intervention within the field of neurotology. Background: There is a significant need to monitor human cognitive performance in complex environments, with one example being pilot performance. However, existing assessments largely focus on subjective experiences (e.g., questionnaires) and the evaluation of behavior (e.g., aircraft handling) as surrogates for cognition or utilize brainwave measures which require artificial setups (e.g., simultaneous auditory stimuli) that intrude on the primary tasks. Blink-related oscillations (BROs) are a recently discovered neural phenomenon associated with spontaneous blinking that can be captured without artificial setups and are also modulated by cognitive loading and the external sensory environment—making them ideal for brain function assessment within complex operational settings. Methods: Electroencephalography (EEG) data were recorded from eight adult participants (five F, M = 21.1 years) while they completed the Multi-Attribute Task Battery under three different cognitive loading conditions. BRO responses in time and frequency domains were derived from the EEG data, and comparisons of BRO responses across cognitive loading conditions were undertaken. Simultaneously, assessments of blink behavior were also undertaken. Results: Blink behavior assessments revealed decreasing blink rate with increasing cognitive load (p < 0.001). Prototypical BRO responses were successfully captured in all participants (p < 0.001). BRO responses reflected differences in task-induced cognitive loading in both time and frequency domains (p < 0.05). Additionally, reduced pre-blink theta band desynchronization with increasing cognitive load was also observed (p < 0.05). Conclusion: This study confirms the ability of BRO responses to capture cognitive loading effects as well as preparatory pre-blink cognitive processes in anticipation of the upcoming blink during a complex multitasking situation. These successful results suggest that blink-related neural processing could be a potential avenue for cognitive state evaluation in operational settings—both specialized environments such as cockpits, space exploration, military units, etc. and everyday situations such as driving, athletics, human-machine interactions, etc.—where human cognition needs to be seamlessly monitored and optimized. Punctal occlusion (PO) is considered to improve both tear-film instability and increased friction during blinking and may consequently affect blinks. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of PO on blinks. This study involved 16 eyes of 16 severe aqueous deficient dry eye (ADDE) patients (mean age: 65.7 years). In all eyes, tear meniscus radius (TMR), spread grade (SG) of the tear-film lipid layer (i.e., SG 1-5: 1 being the best), fluorescein break-up time (FBUT), corneal epithelial damage score (CED), conjunctival epithelial damage score, corneal filament (CF) grade, lid-wiper epitheliopathy (LWE) grade, and superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis (SLK) grade were evaluated at before and at more than 1-month after PO. Moreover, using a custom-made high-speed blink analyzer, palpebral aperture height, blink rate, upper-eyelid closing-phase amplitude/duration/maximum velocity, and upper-eyelid opening-phase amplitude/duration/maximum velocity were measured at the same time point. After PO, TMR, SG, FBUT, CED, and the CF, LWE, and SLK grades were significantly improved, and upper-eyelid opening/closing-phase amplitude and maximum velocity significantly increased (all p < 0.04). The findings of this study suggest that PO improves ocular surface lubrication and that blink-related parameters can reflect the friction that occurs during blinking in eyes with severe ADDE. Color can be an indicator of plant health, quality, and productivity, and is useful to researchers to understand plant nutritional content in their studies. Color may be related to chlorophyll content and photosynthetic activity and provides information for those studying diseases and mineral nutrition because every nutrient deficiency and many diseases produce symptoms that affect color. In order to identify significant loci related to both leaf and pod color in a snap bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) diversity panel, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was carried out. Leaf color in one and pod traits in multiple environments were characterized using a colorimeter. L*a*b* color data were recorded and used to calculate chroma (C*) and hue angle (H°). Leaves were evaluated at three positions (lower, middle, and upper) in the canopy and both pod exterior and interior colors were obtained. GWAS was conducted using two reference genomes that represent the Andean (G19833) and Middle American (5-593) domestication centers. Narrow sense heritabilities were calculated using the mixed linear model (MLM) method in genome association and prediction integrated tool (GAPIT), and significant single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) for each color parameter were obtained using the Bayesian-information and linkage-disequilibrium iteratively nested keyway (BLINK) GWAS model with two principal components (PCAs). In comparison to pod color traits, narrow sense heritabilities of leaf traits were low and similar for both reference genomes. Generally, narrow sense heritability for all traits was highest in the lower, followed by middle, and then upper leaf positions. Heritability for both pod interior and exterior color traits was higher using the G19833 reference genome compared to 5-593 when evaluated by year and means across years. Forty-five significant SNPs associated with leaf traits and 872 associated with pods, totaling 917 significant SNPs were identified. Only one SNP was found in common for both leaf and pod traits on Pv03 in the 5-593 reference genome. One-hundred thirteen significant SNPs, 30 in leaves and 83 in pods had phenotypic variation explained (PVE) of 10% or greater. Fourteen SNPs (four from G19833 and ten from 5-593) with ≥10 PVE%, large SNP effect, and largest p-value for L* and H° pod exterior was identified on Pv01, Pv02, Pv03, and Pv08. More SNPs were associated with pod traits than with leaf traits. The pod interior did not exhibit colors produced by anthocyanins or flavonols which allowed the differentiation of potential candidate genes associated with chloroplast and photosynthetic activity compared to the pod exterior where candidate genes related to both flavonoids and photosynthesis affected color. Several SNPs were associated with known qualitative genes including the wax pod locus (y), persistent color (pc), purple pods (V), and two genes expressed in seeds but not previously reported to affect other plant tissues (B and J). An evaluation of significant SNPs within annotated genes found a number, within a 200 kb window, involved in both flavonoid and photosynthetic biosynthetic pathways. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The electrooculogram (EOG) is one of the most significant signals carrying eye movement information, such as blinks and saccades. There are many human–computer interface (HCI) applications based on eye blinks. For example, the detection of eye blinks can be useful for paralyzed people in controlling wheelchairs. Eye blink features from EOG signals can be useful in drowsiness detection. In some applications of electroencephalograms (EEGs), eye blinks are considered noise. The accurate detection of eye blinks can help achieve denoised EEG signals. In this paper, we aimed to design an application-specific reconfigurable binary EOG signal processor to classify blinks and saccades. This work used dual-channel EOG signals containing horizontal and vertical EOG signals. At first, the EOG signals were preprocessed, and then, by extracting only two features, the root mean square (RMS) and standard deviation (STD), blink and saccades were classified. In the classification stage, 97.5% accuracy was obtained using a support vector machine (SVM) at the simulation level. Further, we implemented the system on Xilinx Zynq-7000 FPGAs by hardware/software co-design. The processing was entirely carried out using a hybrid serial–parallel technique for low-power hardware optimization. The overall hardware accuracy for detecting blinks was 95%. The on-chip power consumption for this design was 0.8 watts, whereas the dynamic power was 0.684 watts (86%), and the static power was 0.116 watts (14%). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Currently, the modern diplomacy practice is no longer focusing on the state actor but more importantly, involving non-state actor, especially public figures or celebrities as the ambassador to carry out specific mission of the states or international organizations at the global level. An example of such development is the appointment of South Korea-based music group Blackpink as the goodwill ambassador for the United Nations Climate Change Conference 26 (COP 26) in 2021. The selection of Blackpink as the COP26 ambassador was intended to improve awareness on the global campaign against climate change, especially within the BLINK – Blackpink fans community – worldwide through #ClimateActionInYourArea campaign in the Blackpink official Youtube account. This study used a survey method of 203 sample respondents from a population of followers from BOI accounts on Instagram using probability sampling technique. The analysis results show that Blackpink’s celebrity diplomacy campaign encourages Blink Indonesia to develop interest in climate change issues by making donations and emphasizing the importance of climate action in their neighborhood. Such findings confirm the expected effect of attraction tactic of soft power strategy in the current diplomatic practice, that is to co-opt the perception of targeted audience towards specific issue in international relations.

Long-duration spaceflight can have adverse effects on human health. One of the most common ocular conditions experienced by astronauts is dry eye disease (DED). Symptoms of DED include feelings of eye irritation, eye strain, foreign body sensation and blurred vision. Over 30% of International Space Station expedition crew members reported irritation and foreign body sensation. We reviewed the current literature on the prevalence and mechanisms of DED in astronauts and its potential implications for long-duration spaceflight, including the influence of environmental factors, such as microgravity and fluid shift on tear film physiology in space. DED has negative effects on astronaut performance, which is why there is a need for further research into the pathophysiology and countermeasures. The consequences of facial nerve palsy and the secondary inability of eyelid closure and blink may lead to devastating complications for the patient, including blindness. Reconstruction techniques to improve eyelid position and function can be broadly classified into 'static' and 'dynamic' techniques. Generally, ophthalmologists have been familiar with static procedures such as upper eyelid loading, tarsorrhaphy, canthoplasty, and lower eyelid suspension. Recently, dynamic techniques are being increasingly described for patients who require definitive strategies to improve eyelid function, once the initial critical goals of corneal protection and vision preservation have been achieved. The choice of technique(s) is dependent upon the status of the main protractor of the eyelid region, as well as the age of the patient, the patient's morbidities and expectations, and surgeon preference. This review shall first describe the clinical and surgical anatomy relevant to the ophthalmic consequences of facial paralysis and discuss methods of defining function and outcomes. A comprehensive review of dynamic eyelid reconstruction is then presented with a discussion of the literature. These various techniques may not be familiar to all clinicians. It is important that ophthalmic surgeons are aware of all options available for their patients. Furthermore, eye care providers must have an understanding of when referral may be appropriate to provide timely intervention and optimal chances of recovery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The tremendous increase in the use of video-based eye tracking has made it possible to collect eye tracking data from thousands of participants. The traditional procedures for the manual detection and classification of saccades and for trial categorization (e.g., correct vs. incorrect) are not viable for the large datasets being collected. Additionally, video-based eye trackers allow for the analysis of pupil responses and blink behaviors. Here, we present a detailed description of our pipeline for collecting, storing, and cleaning data, as well as for organizing participant codes, which are fairly lab-specific but nonetheless, are important precursory steps in establishing standardized pipelines. More importantly, we also include descriptions of the automated detection and classification of saccades, blinks, “blincades” (blinks occurring during saccades), and boomerang saccades (two nearly simultaneous saccades in opposite directions where speed-based algorithms fail to split them), This is almost entirely task-agnostic and can be used on a wide variety of data. We additionally describe novel findings regarding post-saccadic oscillations and provide a method to achieve more accurate estimates for saccade end points. Lastly, we describe the automated behavior classification for the interleaved pro/anti-saccade task (IPAST), a task that probes voluntary and inhibitory control. This pipeline was evaluated using data collected from 592 human participants between 5 and 93 years of age, making it robust enough to handle large clinical patient datasets. In summary, this pipeline has been optimized to consistently handle large datasets obtained from diverse study cohorts (i.e., developmental, aging, clinical) and collected across multiple laboratory sites.

Background: Inconsistent observations of pupillary response and blink change in response to different specific tasks raise questions regarding the relationship between eye measures, task types and working memory (WM) models. On the one hand, studies have provided mixed evidence from eye measures about tasks: pupil size has mostly been reported to increase with increasing task demand while this expected change was not observed in some studies, and blink rate has exhibited different trends in different tasks. On the other hand, a WM model has been developed to integrate a component to reconcile recent findings that the human motor system plays an important role in cognition and learning. However, how different tasks correlate with WM components has not been experimentally examined using eye activity measurements. Aims: The current study uses a four‐dimensional task load framework to bridge eye measures, task types and WM models. Sample: Twenty participants (10 males, 10 females; Age: M = 25.8, SD = 7.17) above 18 years old volunteered. All participants had normal or corrected to normal vision with contact lenses and had no eye diseases causing obvious excessive blinking. Methods: We examined the ability of pupil size and blink rate to index low and high levels of cognitive, perceptual, physical and communicative task load. A network of the four load types and WM components was built and analysed to verify the necessity of integrating a physical task‐related component into the WM model. Results: Results demonstrate that pupil size can index cognitive load and communicative load but not perceptual or physical load. Blink rate can index the level of cognitive load but is best at discriminating perceptual tasks from other types of tasks. Furthermore, pupil size measurement of the four task types was explained better during structural and factor analysis by a WM model that integrates a movement‐related component. Conclusions: This research provides new insights into the relationship between eye measures, task type and WM models and provides a comprehensive understanding from which to predict pupil size and blink behaviours in more complex and practical tasks. After PO, TMR, SG, FBUT, CED, and the CF, LWE, and SLK grades were significantly improved, and upper-eyelid opening/closing-phase amplitude and maximum velocity significantly increased (all p < 0.04). The findings of this study suggest that PO improves ocular surface lubrication and that blink-related parameters can reflect the friction that occurs during blinking in eyes with severe ADDE.

The rapid expansion of video conferencing and remote works due to the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a massive volume of video data to be analyzed in order to understand the audience engagement. However, analyzing this data efficiently, particularly in real-time, poses a scalability challenge as online events can involve hundreds of people and last for hours. Existing solutions, especially open-sourced contributions, usually require dedicated and expensive hardware, and are designed as centralized cloud systems. Additionally, they may also require users to stream their video to remote servers, which raises privacy concerns. This paper introduces scalable and efficient computer vision algorithms for analyzing face orientation and eye blink in real-time on edge devices, including Android, iOS, and Raspberry Pi. An example solution is presented for proctoring online meetings, workplaces, and exams. It analyzes audiences on their own devices, thus addressing scalability and privacy issues, and runs at up to 30 fps on a Raspberry Pi. The proposed face orientation detection algorithm is extremely simple, efficient, and able to estimate the head pose in two degrees of freedom, horizontal and vertical. The proposed Eye Aspect Ratio (EAR) with simple adaptive threshold demonstrated a significant improvement in terms of false positives and overall accuracy compared to the existing constant threshold method. Additionally, the algorithms are implemented and open sourced as a toolkit with modular, cross-platform MediaPipe Calculators and Graphs so that users can easily create custom solutions for a variety of purposes and devices. Background: Basmati is a speciality segment in the rice genepool characterised by explicit grain quality. For the want of suitable populations, genome-wide association study (GWAS) in Basmati rice has not been attempted. Materials: To address this gap, we have performed a GWAS on a panel of 172 elite Basmati multiparent population comprising of potential restorers and maintainers. Phenotypic data was generated for various agronomic and grain quality traits across seven different environments during two consecutive crop seasons. Based on the observed phenotypic variation, three agronomic traits namely, days to fifty per cent flowering, plant height and panicle length, and three grain quality traits namely, kernel length before cooking, length breadth ratio and kernel length after cooking were subjected to GWAS. Genotyped with 80K SNP array, the population was subjected to principal component analysis to stratify the underlying substructure and subjected to the association analysis using Bayesian-information and Linkage-disequilibrium Iteratively Nested Keyway (BLINK) model. Results: We identified 32 unique MTAs including 11 robust MTAs for the agronomic traits and 25 unique MTAs including two robust MTAs for the grain quality traits. Six out of 13 robust MTAs were novel. By genome annotation, six candidate genes associated with the robust MTAs were identified. Further analysis of the allelic combinations of the robust MTAs enabled the identification of superior allelic combinations in the population. This information was utilized in selecting 77 elite Basmati rice genotypes from the panel. Conclusion: This is the first ever GWAS study in Basmati rice which could generate valuable information usable for further breeding through marker assisted selection, including enhancing of heterosis. The electrooculogram (EOG) is one of the most significant signals carrying eye movement information, such as blinks and saccades. There are many human–computer interface (HCI) applications based on eye blinks. For example, the detection of eye blinks can be useful for paralyzed people in controlling wheelchairs. Eye blink features from EOG signals can be useful in drowsiness detection. In some applications of electroencephalograms (EEGs), eye blinks are considered noise. The accurate detection of eye blinks can help achieve denoised EEG signals. In this paper, we aimed to design an application-specific reconfigurable binary EOG signal processor to classify blinks and saccades. This work used dual-channel EOG signals containing horizontal and vertical EOG signals. At first, the EOG signals were preprocessed, and then, by extracting only two features, the root mean square (RMS) and standard deviation (STD), blink and saccades were classified. In the classification stage, 97.5% accuracy was obtained using a support vector machine (SVM) at the simulation level. Further, we implemented the system on Xilinx Zynq-7000 FPGAs by hardware/software co-design. The processing was entirely carried out using a hybrid serial–parallel technique for low-power hardware optimization. The overall hardware accuracy for detecting blinks was 95%. The on-chip power consumption for this design was 0.8 watts, whereas the dynamic power was 0.684 watts (86%), and the static power was 0.116 watts (14%).

PurposePain sensitivity has been identified as a factor that affects how individuals answer dry eye questionnaires, but it is unknown how it affects ocular discomfort. This study used the time that individuals could refrain from blinking as an indicator of ocular discomfort and set out to determine whether it was related to pain sensitivity, while adjusting for ocular surface conditions.MethodsSubjects first completed the Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire to quantify pain sensitivity levels. Exposed interpalpebral area, tear meniscus height, tear-film lipid layer thickness, ocular surface cooling, and noninvasive tear breakup were assessed. Subjects were then asked to refrain from blinking until the initial onset of discomfort, which was termed "the maximum interblink period" (MIBP), while ocular surface cooling rate was simultaneously measured. Subjects were seen for four visits over a course of 2 days.ResultsForty-two subjects (36 females, 6 males) completed the study, with a mean (SD) age of 23.2 (3.8) years. A longer MIBP was associated with decreased pain sensitivity (P = 0.04), lower ocular surface cooling rate (P < 0.001), and Asian ethnicity (P = 0.005). Based on the results from the mixed-effect model, it is estimated that individuals would be able to refrain from blinking for an additional 4 seconds if they had the lowest (0.6) compared to the highest (6.1) pain sensitivity in the study cohort.ConclusionsThe Pain Sensitivity Questionnaire was associated with the MIBP length even after adjusting for ocular surface conditions, which suggests that pain sensitivity plays a role in influencing how ocular discomfort is perceived.

New solutions are emerging that address specific facial regions in facial nerve palsy (FNP). However the most dreaded consequence of FNP is paralytic lagophthalmos threatening the eye. A way to prioritize these regions is thus required. A review of the literature is conduced to capture the current concepts in evaluating FNP. Overall, patients are assessed from three perspectives: from the clinician's perspective using validated clinician‐based grading instruments, from patient's perspective based on FNP‐specific patient‐reported outcome measures, and from the perspective of the layperson. The existing tools however provide limited information regarding the relative importance of different regions of the face. The eye appears to be an area of great concern for the patient where most surgical therapies are directed at. Chickpea is an inexpensive source of protein, minerals, and vitamins to the poor people living in arid and semi-arid regions of Southern Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa. New chickpea cultivars with enhanced levels of protein, Fe and Zn content are a medium-term strategy for supplying essential nutrients for human health and reducing malnutrition. In the current study, a chickpea reference set of 280 accessions, including landraces, breeding lines, and advanced cultivars, was evaluated for grain protein, Fe, Zn content and agronomic traits over two seasons. Using a mid-density 5k SNP array, 4603 highly informative SNPs distributed across the chickpea genome were used for GWAS analysis. Population structure analysis revealed three subpopulations (K = 3). Linkage disequilibrium (LD) was extensive, and LD decay was relatively low. A total of 20 and 46 marker-trait associations (MTAs) were identified for grain nutrient and agronomic traits, respectively, using FarmCPU and BLINK models. Of which seven SNPs for grain protein, twelve for Fe, and one for Zn content were distributed on chromosomes 1, 4, 6, and 7. The marker S4_4477846 on chr4 was found to be co-associated with grain protein over seasons. The markers S1_11613376 and S1_2772537 co-associated with grain Fe content under NSII and pooled seasons and S7_9379786 marker under NSI and pooled seasons. The markers S4_31996956 co-associated with grain Fe and days to maturity. SNP annotation of associated markers were found to be related to gene functions of metal ion binding, transporters, protein kinases, transcription factors, and many more functions involved in plant metabolism along with Fe and protein homeostasis. Eyeblinks are the brief closures of the lid. They are accompanied by a cocontraction of the eye muscles that temporarily pulls the whole eyeball back into its socket. When blinks occur together with execution of saccadic gaze shifts, they interfere with the saccadic premotor circuit, causing these within-blink saccades to be slower than normal and also time-locked to blinks. To analyze the trajectory of within-blink saccades, subtraction of the entangled blink-related eye movement is required. Here we propose a combination of principal component analysis (PCA) and a regression model to subtract the blink-related component of the eye movement based on the respective blink metrics. We used electrooculography (EOG) to measure eye and lid movements of 12 participants who performed saccades with and without blinks. We found that within-blink saccades are slower than without-blink saccades and are tightly coupled in time to blink onset. Surprisingly, in some participants we observed large dynamic overshoots of up to 15° for saccades of only 5° amplitude. The finding of dynamic overshoots was independently confirmed by dynamic MRI for two of the participants and challenges the current view that within-blink saccades are programmed as slow, but straight, saccades. We hypothesize that the dynamic overshoots could be attributed to inhibition of omnipause neurons during blinks, the simultaneous cocontraction of extraocular muscles, or a combination of both. Previous studies have shown that eye activities, including blinks, can indicate the psychological state of an individual. However, almost all previous studies analyzing blinks merely concentrated on traditional descriptive statistics, which are unable to reflect their dynamic processes. Furthermore, the states of non-blink (opening the eyes) and blink alternate with each other, forming a physiological cycle. If we only investigate blinks alone, it may be inadequate to describe how blinking works. Therefore, we attempted to recognize the affective state (“relaxation” vs. “stress”) of an individual through the dynamics of blink and non-blink cyclicity (BNBC), as one example, to illustrate this method. First, the “Stroop Test” was employed for emotion elicitation. Then, features were extracted from a categorical time series (0: non-blink; 1: blink), which was recorded by the eye-tracking system. Finally, the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) values were obtained via eight commonly used classifiers. The results show that, compared with the traditional approaches for blink analysis, BNBC exhibits more compelling proficiency to detect stress. Breeding for decreased fruit cracking incidence and increased fruit firmness in sweet cherry creates an attractive alternative to variable results from cultural management practices. DNA-informed breeding increases its efficiency, yet upstream research is needed to identify the genomic regions associated with the trait variation of a breeding-relevant magnitude, as well as to identify the parental sources of favorable alleles. The objectives of this research were to identify the quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with fruit cracking incidence and firmness, estimate the effects of single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) haplotypes at the detected QTLs, and identify the ancestral source(s) of functional haplotypes. Fruit cracking incidence and firmness were evaluated for multiple years on 259 unselected seedlings representing 22 important breeding parents. Phenotypic data, in conjunction with genome-wide genotypic data from the RosBREED cherry 6K SNP array, were used in the QTL analysis performed via Pedigree-Based Analysis using the FlexQTL™ software, supplemented by a Genome-Wide Association Study using the BLINK software. Haplotype analysis was conducted on the QTLs to identify the functional SNP haplotypes and estimate their phenotypic effects, and the haplotypes were tracked through the pedigree. Four QTLs (two per trait) were consistent across the years and/or both analysis methods and validated the previously reported QTLs. qCrack-LG1.1m (the label given to a consistent QTL for cracking incidence on chromosome 1) explained 2–15.1% of the phenotypic variance, while qCrack-LG5.1m, qFirm-LG1.2m, and qFirm-LG3.2m explained 7.6–13.8, 8.8–21.8, and 1.7–10.1% of the phenotypic variance, respectively. At each QTL, at least two SNP haplotypes had significant effects and were considered putative functional SNP haplotypes. Putative low-cracking SNP haplotypes were tracked to an unnamed parent of 'Emperor Francis' and 'Schmidt' and unnamed parents of 'Napoleon' and 'Hedelfingen,' among others, and putative high-firmness haplotypes were tracked to an unnamed parent of 'Emperor Francis' and 'Schmidt,' an unnamed grandparent of 'Black Republican,' 'Rube,' and an unknown parent of 'Napoleon.' Facial nerve paralysis (FNP) is a debilitating condition that leaves those affected with disfigurement and loss of function. The most important function of the facial nerve is protecting the eye through eye closure and blinking. A series of reanimation techniques have been reported to restore dynamic function in FNP, but the lack of a universally accepted method that is reliable and reproducible with immediate effect has led to the introduction of several implantable devices. Most of these devices have been applied to assist blinking; however, the delicate anatomy and unique mechanics of eye closure are difficult to replicate. Lid loading is the most frequently used implant today, which is a passive device that can aid in volitional eye closure but has a limited effect on blinking. Dynamic action can be achieved with active prostheses but achieving successful long-term function remains elusive. Device action must also be coupled with a real-time feedback mechanism in order to capture the natural variation in facial muscle movements. Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS) of four Multi-parent Advanced Generation Inter-Cross (MAGIC) populations identified nine regions on chromosomes 1H, 3H, 4H, 5H, 6H and 7H associated with resistance against barley scald disease. Three of these regions are putatively novel resistance Quantitative Trait Loci (QTL). Barley scald is caused by Rhynchosporium commune, one of the most important barley leaf diseases that are prevalent in most barley-growing regions. Up to 40% yield losses can occur in susceptible barley cultivars. Four MAGIC populations were generated in a Nordic Public–Private Pre-breeding of spring barley project (PPP Barley) to introduce resistance to several important diseases. Here, these MAGIC populations consisting of six to eight founders each were tested for scald resistance in field trials in Finland and Iceland. Eight different model covariate combinations were compared for GWAS studies, and the models that deviated the least from the expected p-values were selected. For all QTL, candidate genes were identified that are predicted to be involved in pathogen defence. The MAGIC progenies contained new haplotypes of significant SNP-markers with high resistance levels. The lines with successfully pyramided resistance against scald and mildew and the significant markers are now distributed among Nordic plant breeders and will benefit development of disease-resistant cultivars. Every day we mentally process new information that needs to be attended, encoded and retrieved. Processing demands depend on the amount of information and the mental attentional capacity of the individual. Research shows that eye movement indices such as peak saccade velocity and blink rate are related to processes of attentional control, however it is still unclear how eye movements are affected by graded changes in task demand. We examine for the first time relations of eye movements to mental attentional tasks with six levels of task demand and two interference conditions. We report data on 57 adults who completed two versions of the color matching task and provided subjective self rating for each mental attentional demand level. Results show that peak saccade velocity and blink rate decrease as a function of mental attentional demand and correlate negatively with self rating of mental effort. Theoretically, new findings related to mental attentional demand and eye movements inform models of visual processing and cognition. Practically, results point to directions for further research to better understand complex relations among eye movements and mental attentional demand in pediatric populations and individuals with cognitive deficits.

Pupil size and blink rates are heritable but the extent to which they interact with one another has not been properly investigated. Though changes in pupil size due to eye blinks have been reported, they are considered a pupillary artifact. In this study we used the HCP 7T fMRI dataset with resting state eye-tracking data obtained in monozygous and dizygous twins to assess their heritability and their interactions. For this purpose, we characterized the pupil dilation (positive peak) and constriction (negative peak) that followed blink events, which we describe as blink-induced pupillary response (BIPR). We show that the BIPR is highly consistent with a positive dilatory peak (D-peak) around 500ms and a negative constricting peak (C-peak) around 1s. These patterns were reproducible within- and between- subjects across two time points and differed by vigilance state (vigilant versus drowsy). By comparing BIPR between monozygous and dizygous twins we show that BIPR have a heritable component with significant additive genetic (A) and environmental (E) factors dominating the structural equation models, particularly in the time-domain for both D- and C-peaks and amplitude domain for the C-peak. (a 2 between 42-49%). Blink duration, pupil size and blink rate were also found to be highly heritable (a 2 up to 62% for pupil size). Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the effect of transcutaneous upper eyelid blepharoplasty on lipid layer thickness (LLT) and blink parameters in young women during the early postoperative period.Methods: This prospective study included 110 eyes of 55 young female patients (age range, 19–31 years) who underwent transcutaneous upper eyelid blepharoplasty. The LLT and blink parameters measured using a LipiView interferometer were recorded before the surgery and 1 week and 1 month after the surgery. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) score, noninvasive tear film breakup time (NITBUT), and palpebral fissure height (PFH) measurements were also performed at each time point.Results: The number of blinks significantly decreased (P < 0.001), and the number of partial blinks and partial blink rate (PBR) significantly increased 1 week after the surgery (P = 0.002 and P < 0.001); they all returned to baseline in 1 month. The LLT and OSDI score increased significantly 1 week and 1 month after the surgery (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001). A significant increase in the NITBUT and a significant decrease in the PFH were observed 1 week after the surgery (P < 0.001 and P < 0.001), and the values returned to baseline 1 month after the surgery. No clinical correlation was found between blink parameters and ocular surface parameters.Conclusions: Transcutaneous upper eyelid blepharoplasty led to a change in blink parameters and ocular surface parameters during the early postoperative period. However, this influence was temporary, and the transitory change in blink parameters had no effects on the ocular surface environment.

The neural basis of consciousness has been explored in humans and animals; however, the exact nature of consciousness remains elusive. In this study, we aimed to elucidate which brain regions are relevant to arousal in humans. Simultaneous recordings of brain activity and eye-tracking were conducted in 20 healthy human participants. Brain activity was measured by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging with a multiband acquisition protocol. The subjective levels of arousal were investigated based on the degree of eyelid closure that was recorded using a near-infrared eye camera within the scanner. The results showed that the participants were in an aroused state for 79% of the scan time, and the bilateral thalami were significantly associated with the arousal condition. Among the major thalamic subnuclei, the mediodorsal nucleus (MD) showed greater involvement in arousal when compared with other subnuclei. A receiver operating characteristic analysis with leave-one-out crossvalidation conducted using template-based brain activity and arousal-level data from eye-tracking showed that, in most participants, thalamic activity significantly predicted the subjective levels of arousal. These results indicate a significant role of the thalamus, and in particular, the MD, which has rich connectivity with the prefrontal cortices and the limbic system in human consciousness. Facial palsy can cause the impairment of eye closure and affect blink, ocular health, communication, and esthetics. Dynamic surgical procedures can restore eye closure in patients with decreased facial nerve function. There are no standardized measures of voluntary and spontaneous eye closure that are used to evaluate the outcomes of blink restoration procedures. The purpose of this systematic literature review was to identify the measures used to assess normal and abnormal eye closure and blinking in patients with facial palsy. A literature search of the PubMed database using the keyword "facial nerve/surgery" was conducted. Only English language articles that pertain to the use of facial paralysis assessment systems published in the past 20 years, which involve eyelid closure were included. There were 57 articles that used a facial paralysis classification system with an eyelid closure component: House-Brackmann Facial Nerve Grading Scale (n = 43, 67%); Sunnybrook Facial Grading Scale (n = 9); palpebral fissure heights (n = 4), and the electronic clinician-graded facial function tool (n = 3) and three additional measures were reported once. Although the Terzis and Bruno Scoring System, blink ratio, and electronic, clinician-graded facial function scale(eFACE) Clinician-Graded Scoring System were valid measures of eyelid closure, there was no one comprehensive eye assessment that demonstrated all aspects of eye closure in facial palsy, which include closure amplitude, spontaneity, and quality of life. For blink assessment, eFACE is the most comprehensive tool currently available and recommended to be used with a patient-reported quality of life supplement that captures the specific domains related to facial nerve dysfunction. Purpose: To elucidate the relationship between partial blink rate (PBR) and ocular surface parameters. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cross‐sectional study of the patients who visited the Kim's Eye Hospital between March 2020 and July 2020. Blinking dynamics, tear film lipid layer thickness (LLT), non-invasive tear film break- up time (NITBUT), tear meniscus height (TMH), and meibomian gland (MG) dropout rate were assessed using the IDRA® Ocular surface analyzer (SBM SISTEMI, Inc., Torino, Italy) (IDRA). Dry eye symptoms were quantified by the Standard Patient Evaluation of Eye Dryness (SPEED) questionnaire scores. Results: A total of 47 non-Sjögren dry eye patients (47 right eyes, mean age = 56.8 ± 14.5 [20–75] years, 66% female) were enrolled. Among the ocular surface parameters, PBR had strong correlations with MG dropout rate (r = 0.811; p < 0.01) and moderate correlations with SPEED scores (r = 0.596; p < 0.01). MG dropout rate and age had moderate correlations with SPEED scores (r = 0.416; p = 0.04 and r = 0.322; p = 0.03, respectively). Comparisons by sex revealed no significant difference in characteristics, except for the TMH value.
