Hybridization in antelope species has been widely reported in South African national parks and provincial reserves as well as on private land due to anthropogenic effects. In a closed management setting, hybridization may occur due to the crossbreeding of closely related species with unequal sex ratios, resulting in either sterile or fertile offspring. In this study, we used molecular techniques to evaluate the risk of anthropogenic hybridization between blesbok (Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi) and red hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus caama) in an isolated group that purposely included the two species with unequal sex ratios (one red hartebeest male and 19 male and female blesbok). Genetic analysis based on microsatellites confirmed the presence of seven hybrid individuals. Mitochondrial analysis verified that hybridization occurred between blesbok females and the red hartebeest male. STRUCTURE and NEWHYBRIDS classified the hybrids as F1. It is suspected that the hybrid individuals were sterile as the males had undeveloped testes and only F1 hybrids were detected. Thus, the risk of hybridization between these two species may be limited in the wild. In captive settings, genetic monitoring should be included in management plans for blesbok and red hartebeest to ensure that the long‐term consequences of wasted reproductive effort are limited. Here, we investigated genetic diversity in bontebok, blesbok and hybrid individuals using microsatellites and an adaptive marker (toll‐like receptor two (TLR2)). The study of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) revealed five mutations in TLR2 in different individuals and subspecies of D. pygargus. This included three non‐synonymous and two synonymous mutations. The three amino acid substitution mutations were predicted to have no effect on protein function. Two of the five mutations, one of which resulted in an amino acid substitution, were not present in bontebok. The other three mutations were present to varying frequencies in the three groups. We confirm low adaptive and neutral diversity in bontebok. These mutations provide insights into the genetic diversity and relationships among the two sub‐species of D. pygargus and may have implications for their conservation and management. Sweet potato is one of the most important crops being promoted for food security and nutrition in South Africa. This study investigated the nutritional and chemical compositions of four whitefleshed (Blesbok, Ndou, Monate, and Mvuvhelo) and three orange-fleshed (Bophelo, Impilo, and 199062.1) cultivars. The protein, ash, and crude fibre contents were analysed using standard AOAC procedures. The detection of fatty acids, sugar, and metabolites was carried out using Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). Carbohydrate and energy values were determined using standard methods. The results showed that Bophelo had the highest protein content (12.00%), with Blesbok having the lowest protein content (4.56%). The study also revealed that Impilo had the highest fibre (7.11%) and total sugar (22.21 %) contents. The highest ash content was found in 199062.1 (5.81 %) and the lowest was observed in Monate (4.50 %). Bophelo had the highest total fat content (0.650 %), with saturated, mono-saturated, and polysaturated fats of 0.270 %, 0.050 %, and 0.270 %, respectively, while the lowest fat content was observed in Impilo (0.380 %), with saturated, mono-saturated, and poly-saturated fats of 0.225 %, 0.020 % and 0.135 %, respectively. The highest total carbohydrate content was found in Blesbok (76.72 %). Different fatty acids, including palmitic acid (C16), stearic acid (C18), arachidic acid (C20), oleic acid (C18:1), and linoleic acid (C18:2) were also found in the sweet potato cultivars. Wild animals are commonly captured for conservation, research, and wildlife management purposes. However, capture is associated with a high risk of morbidity or mortality. Capture-induced hyperthermia is a commonly encountered complication believed to contribute significantly to morbidity and mortality. Active cooling of hyperthermic animals by dousing with water is believed to treat capture-induced pathophysiological effects, but remains untested. This study aimed to determine the pathophysiological effects of capture, and whether cooling by dousing with cold water effectively reduces these effects in blesbok (Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi). Thirty-eight blesbok were randomly allocated into three groups: a control group that was not chased (Ct, n=12), chased not cooled (CNC, n=14), and chased plus cooled group (C+C, n=12). The CNC and C+C groups were chased for 15 min prior to chemical immobilization on day 0. Animals in the C+C group were cooled with 10 L of cold water (4 C) for 10 min during immobilization. All animals were immobilized on days 0, 3, 16, and 30. During each immobilization, rectal and muscle temperatures were recorded, and arterial and venous blood samples collected. Blesbok in the CNC and C+C groups presented with capture-induced pathophysiological changes characterized by hyperthermia, hyperlactatemia, increased markers of liver, skeletal, and cardiac muscle damage, hypoxemia, and hypocapnia. Cooling effectively returned body temperatures to normothermic levels, but neither the magnitude nor the duration of the pathophysiological changes differed between the CNC and C+C groups. Therefore, at least in blesbok, capture-induced hyperthermia appears not to be the primary cause of the pathophysiological changes, but is more likely a clinical sign of the hypermetabolism resulting from capture-induced physical and psychological stress. Although cooling is still recommended to prevent the compounding cytotoxic effects of persistent hyperthermia, it is unlikely to prevent stress- and hypoxia-induced damage caused by the capture procedure. The study compared immobilisation of blesbok (Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi) with etorphine and azaperone vs etorphine and midazolam. Twelve female blesbok, weighing 59.4 ± 2.8 kg, were used. Each animal randomly received Treatment 1 (T1) (etorphine, 0.07 ± 0.003 mg/kg + azaperone, 0.36 ± 0.02 mg/kg) and Treatment 2 (T2) (etorphine, 0.07 ± 0.003 mg/kg + midazolam, 0.20 ± 0.01 mg/kg) with a one-week washout period between treatments. Induction times were recorded followed by physiological monitoring for 45 minutes of immobilisation. Immobilisation was reversed with naltrexone (20 mg per mg etorphine). Recovery times were also recorded. Induction, immobilisation and recovery were scored with subjective measures. Inductions and recoveries did not differ between combinations, but the quality of immobilisation was significantly better with T1. Rectal temperature and blood pressure were significantly lower during T1. Both treatments resulted in severe hypoxaemia and impaired gas exchange, although overall hypoxaemia was more pronounced for T1. Animals treated with T2, however, exhibited a deterioration in respiration as the monitoring period progressed, possibly as a result of impaired ventilatory muscle function due to the effects of midazolam. Both combinations are suitable for adequate immobilisation of blesbok and should be selected based on the specific capture situation. Supplementation with oxygen is highly recommended. To determine the cardiopulmonary effects of etorphine and thiafentanil for immobilization of blesbok. Blinded, randomized, two-way crossover study. A group of eight adult female blesbok. Animals were immobilized twice, once with etorphine (0.09 mg kg–1) and once with thiafentanil (0.09 mg kg–1) administered intramuscularly by dart. Immobilization quality was assessed and analysed by Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Time to final recumbency was compared between treatments by one-way analysis of variance. Cardiopulmonary effects including respiratory rate (ƒ R), arterial blood pressures and arterial blood gases were measured. A linear mixed model was used to assess the effects of drug treatments over the 40 minute immobilization period. Significant differences between treatments, for treatment over time as well as effect of treatment by time on the variables, were analysed (p < 0.05). There was no statistical difference (p = 0.186) between treatments for time to recumbency. The mean ƒ R was lower with etorphine (14 breaths minute–1) than with thiafentanil (19 breaths minute–1, p = 0.034). The overall mean PaCO 2 was higher with etorphine [45 mmHg (6.0 kPa)] than with thiafentanil [41 mmHg (5.5 kPa), p = 0.025], whereas PaO 2 was lower with etorphine [53 mmHg (7.1 kPa)] than with thiafentanil [64 mmHg (8.5 kPa), p < 0.001]. The systolic arterial pressure measured throughout all time points was higher with thiafentanil than with etorphine (p = 0.04). The difference varied from 30 mmHg at 20 minutes after recumbency to 14 mmHg (standard error difference 2.7 mmHg) at 40 minutes after recumbency. Mean and diastolic arterial pressures were significantly higher with thiafentanil at 20 and 25 minute measurement points only (p < 0.001). Both drugs caused clinically relevant hypoxaemia; however, it was less severe with thiafentanil. Ventilation was adequate. To evaluate the immobilization quality and cardiopulmonary effects of etorphine alone compared with etorphine–azaperone in blesbok (Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi). Blinded, randomized, crossover design. A total of 12 boma-habituated female blesbok weighing [mean ± standard deviation (SD)] 57.5 ± 2.5 kg. Each animal was administered etorphine (0.09 mg kg–1) or etorphine–azaperone (0.09 mg kg–1; 0.35 mg kg–1) intramuscularly with 1-week intertreatment washout period. Time to first sign of altered state of consciousness and immobilization time were recorded. Physiological variables were recorded, arterial blood samples were taken during a 40-minute immobilization period, and naltrexone (mean ± SD: 1.83 ± 0.06 mg kg–1) was intravenously administered. Recovery times were documented, and induction, immobilization and recovery were subjectively scored. Statistical analyses were performed; p < 0.05 was significant. No difference was observed in time to first sign, immobilization time and recovery times between treatments. Time to head up was longer with etorphine–azaperone (0.5 ± 0.2 versus 0.4 ± 0.2 minutes; p = 0.015). Etorphine caused higher arterial blood pressures (mean: 131 ± 17 versus 110 ± 11 mmHg, p < 0.0001), pH, rectal temperature and arterial oxygen partial pressure (59.2 ± 7.7 versus 42.2 ± 9.8 mmHg), but lower heart (p = 0.002) and respiratory rates (p = 0.01). Etorphine–azaperone combination led to greater impairment of ventilatory function, with higher end-tidal carbon dioxide (p < 0.0001) and arterial partial pressure of carbon dioxide (58.0 ± 4.5 versus 48.1 ± 5.1 mmHg). Immobilization quality was greater with etorphine-azaperone than with etorphine alone (median scores: 4 versus 3; p < 0.0001). Both treatments provided satisfactory immobilization of blesbok; however, in addition to a deeper level of immobilization, etorphine–azaperone caused greater ventilatory impairment. Potent opioids are known to cause negative alterations to the physiology of immobilised antelope. How these effects differ between species has not been studied. This study aimed to compare time to recumbence and effects of opioid-based immobilisation on the physiology of impala (Aepyceros melampus) and blesbok (Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi). Eight animals of each species were immobilised, with 0.09 mg/kg etorphine and 0.09 mg/kg thiafentanil respectively, in a randomised two-way cross-over study. Variables measured and analysed by means of a linear mixed model included time to recumbence, heart rate, respiratory rate, arterial blood pressure, blood gases, lactate and glucose. In blesbok, mean time to recumbence was not significantly different with either drug (2.5 minutes and 2.2 min, respectively), but in impala thiafentanil achieved a shorter time to recumbence (2.0 min) than etorphine (3.9 min). Mean heart rates of immobilised impala were within reported physiological limits, but lower in immobilised blesbok when both opioids were used (35 beats/min to 44 beats/min vs. 104 ± 1.4 beats/min resting heart rate). Impala developed severe respiratory compromise and hypoxaemia from both opioids (overall mean PaO2 values ranged from 38 mmHg to 59 mmHg over 30 min). In contrast, blesbok developed only moderate compromise. Therefore, significantly different species-specific physiological responses to potent opioid drugs exist in blesbok and impala. Given that these different responses are clinically relevant, extrapolation of immobilising drug effects from one species of African ungulate to another is not recommended. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract Anthropogenic hybridization is an increasing conservation threat worldwide. In South Africa, recent hybridization is threatening numerous ungulate taxa. For example, the genetic integrity of the near‐threatened bontebok (Damaliscus pygargus pygargus) is threatened by hybridization with the more common blesbok (D. p. phillipsi). Identifying nonadmixed parental and admixed individuals is challenging based on the morphological traits alone; however, molecular analyses may allow for accurate detection. Once hybrids are identified, population simulation software may assist in determining the optimal conservation management strategy, although quantitative evaluation of hybrid management is rarely performed. In this study, our objectives were to describe species‐wide and localized rates of hybridization in nearly 3,000 individuals based on 12 microsatellite loci, quantify the accuracy of hybrid assignment software (STRUCTURE and NEWHYBRIDS), and determine an optimal threshold of bontebok ancestry for management purposes. According to multiple methods, we identified 2,051 bontebok, 657 hybrids, and 29 blesbok. More than two‐thirds of locations contained at least some hybrid individuals, with populations varying in the degree of introgression. HYBRIDLAB was used to simulate four generations of coexistence between bontebok and blesbok, and to optimize a threshold of ancestry, where most hybrids will be detected and removed, and the fewest nonadmixed bontebok individuals misclassified as hybrids. Overall, a threshold Q‐value (admixture coefficient) of 0.90 would remove 94% of hybrid animals, while a threshold of 0.95 would remove 98% of hybrid animals but also 8% of nonadmixed bontebok. To this end, a threshold of 0.90 was identified as optimal and has since been implemented in formal policy by a provincial nature conservation agency. Due to widespread hybridization, effective conservation plans should be established and enforced to conserve native populations that are genetically unique.

Objective The fixed-dose combination of butorphanol, azaperone and medetomidine (BAM; 30, 12 and 12 mg mL −1 , respectively) with subsequent antagonism by naltrexone–atipamezole was evaluated for reversible immobilization of captive blesbok ( Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi ). Study design Prospective, clinical trial. Animals Sixteen blesbok (four males and twelve females), weighing 52.5−71.0 kg, were immobilized in South Africa. Methods The total dose of BAM ranged from 0.5 to 0.7 mL for females and 0.7 to 0.9 mL for males. In seven animals chosen randomly, 8000 units of hyaluronidase was added to the dart. Physiologic variables were recorded every 5 minutes beginning at 10−20 minutes after darting. Arterial blood samples were collected three times at 20, 30 and 40 minutes after darting for analysis of blood acid-base status. Results The mean administered doses of BAM were as follows: butorphanol (0.34 ± 0.08 mg kg −1 ), azaperone (0.14 ± 0.03 mg kg −1 ) and medetomidine (0.14 ± 0.03 mg kg −1 ). The inductions were calm and smooth. The mean induction time was 9.6 ± 3.2 minutes with just BAM and 5.1 ± 0.8 minutes with BAM and hyaluronidase combination. Heart rate (45 ± 6 beats minute −1 ) and respiratory frequency (38 ± 4 breaths minute −1 ) were stable throughout immobilization. The mean arterial blood pressure for all animals was stable but elevated (137 ± 7 mmHg). Rectal temperature slightly increased over time but remained within an acceptable range. The recovery time after administering naltrexone and atipamezole was 4.8 ± 0.7 minutes. Conclusion and clinical relevance The BAM combination proved to be reliable and effective in blesbok. The increasing demand for meat from alternative species, such as blesbok ( Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi ), gives rise to the need for characterizing the quality attributes of fresh meat from these species. While muscle-specific colour stability has been extensively studied in conventional livestock, limited information is available on this phenomenon in game meat. Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the colour stability of three major blesbok muscles, infraspinatus (IS), longissimus thoracis et lumborum (LTL) and biceps femoris (BF). Instrumental colour, surface myoglobin redox forms, and biochemical attributes influencing colour stability were measured on 2.5-cm steaks from blesbok IS, LTL, and BF during refrigerated storage under aerobic conditions for eight days. IS steaks consistently demonstrated higher ( P ≤ 0.05) redness, colour stability, and chroma than the LTL and BF steaks. These findings suggested that blesbok IS muscle is more colour-stable than its LTL and BF counterparts. Sweetpotato is a good source of energy, easy-to-grow and hardy and thus useful in contributing to food security. The current study aimed at identification of the best sweetpotato varieties for multiple desirable traits such as good yield, adaptability (including vine vigor) and tastiness (high dry mass content; taste). Ten South African sweetpotato varieties were evaluated during the period 2002/3-2007/8 at six locations each over two seasons. The sites regression model (SREG) of the genotype plus genotype by environment interaction (GGE) biplot analysis was performed with GenStat to determine stability and adaptability of the varieties. Subsequently, multiple trait selection was performed by using the ranking from Elston index selection. To enable inclusion of varietal stability in multiple trait selection, a stability value was calculated. High yielding varieties included Blesbok, Monate, Ndou and Letlhabula, of which Monate and Letlhabula had stable performance. The advantage, particularly for resource-poor farmers, of a specifically adapted, responsive variety such as Ndou, is the ability to respond to changes in the environment. Based on multiple trait selection varieties Ndou and Monate were recommended for production. The results present an innovative use of Elston index selection, including a stability value, in combination with GGE SREG for recommending varieties with multiple desirable traits. The capture of wild animals is a stressful event which may cause a capture-induced hyperthermia, resulting in morbidity or mortality. We investigated whether various cooling techniques were effective at lowering the body temperature of hyperthermic animals. To achieve this,we implantedminiature temperature-sensitive data loggers into the abdomens of 12 blesbok (Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi ). Five animals were cooled by dousing with water of different temperatures (4°C, 17°C, 28°C) and fanning after dousing with 28°C water. Seven animals were cooled by ice-packs, a fine mist spray of 28°C water, intravenous (IV) infusion of one litre of 4°C saline solution or 28°Cwater-dousing.The body temperature after capture was significantly elevated to as high as 41°C to 42°C. Water-dousing interventions significantly decreased minimum body temperature but there was no difference in the minimumbody temperature reached or themagnitude of cooling between the differentwater temperatures or by the addition of fanning. The ice-packs also lowered body temperature, whereasmist spraying did not.The use of ice packs and dousingwithwater between 4°C and 28°C were the most effective techniques to reduce capture-induced hyperthermia in blesbok.Water-dousing,when done appropriately, is themost practical and effectivemethod to cool an animal with capture-induced hyperthermia. This study quantified the impact of season on fatty acid profiles of male and female blesbok muscles ( longissimus thoracis et lumborum , biceps femoris , semimembranosus , semitendinosus , infraspinatus , and supraspinatus ). Eight mature blesbok were harvested per season (winter and spring). Gender and muscle type influenced (p < 0.05) the fatty acid profiles of blesbok muscles, while season only influenced the C18:3ω3 (α-linolenic acid, ALA) percentages and therefore the total omega-3 poly-unsaturated fatty acids (total ω3 PUFA). Female muscles had higher C16:0 (palmitic acid) (21.01% ± 0.256 vs. 19.05% ± 0.296) and total MUFA percentages, while male muscles had higher (p < 0.05) C18:2ω6c, C20:5ω3, total ω3 PUFA (11.08% ± 0.382 vs. 8.50% ± 0.367), and total PUFA (43.03% ± 0.904 vs. 29.59% ± 1.164) percentages, contributing to higher poly-unsaturated to saturated fatty acid ratios (PUFA:SFA ratios). This study was done to determine whether blesbok (Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi) from the Krugersdorp Game Reserve (KGR) in Gauteng Province, South Africa have higher concentrations of238U and higher206Pb/204Pb and207Pb/204Pb ratios in their bone ash than blesbok from a nearby control reserve that is not exposed to mine water and has no outcrops of uraniferous rocks. Eight blesbok females from the KGR and seven from the control site, all killed with a brain shot, were used. A Thermo X-series 2 quadrupole ICPMS was used to measure the concentrations of238U and lead and a Nu Instruments NuPlasma HR MC-ICP-MS to measure the lead isotope ratios in the tibial ash from each animal. KGR blesbok had higher mean concentrations of238U (P= 0.02) and ratios of206Pb/204Pb and207Pb/204Pb (P< 0.00001) than the control blesbok. The probability of rejecting the false null hypothesis of no difference in the206Pb/204Pb or207Pb/204Pb ratios between KGR and control reserve animals (the power of the test) was 0.999. The blesbok from the KGR accumulated contaminants from an uraniferous environment. BACKGROUND The harvesting and consumption of game meat in South Africa is not limited to season. The study was thus aimed at investigating the seasonal impact on the chemical composition (moisture, protein, fat and ash contents) of male and female blesbok muscles ( N = 32; longissimus dorsi, biceps femoris, semimembranosus, semitendinosus, infraspinatus and supraspinatus). RESULTS A significant interaction ( P ≤ 0.01) existed between season and muscle type. Selected muscles had higher ( P ≤ 0.01) mean protein contents with a higher plane of nutrition (spring of 2009), while longissimus dorsi muscles had the highest ( P ≤ 0.01) mean intramuscular fat content (33.52 g kg−1). A strong negative correlation ( r = −0.82; P ≤ 0.01) existed between the muscles' moisture and protein content. The chemical composition of blesbok semimembranosus muscles was significantly different between seasons, while the other muscles were least affected by seasonal differences in blesbok plane of nutrition and activity levels. CONCLUSION The seasonal and muscle differences were statistically significant, but numerically small. Abstract: The study assesses the possibility to estimate the potential fertility of post-thawed antelope (Antidorcas marsupialis), impala (Aepyceros melampus) and blesbok (Damaliscus dorcus phillipsi) epididymal sperm using homologous and heterologous IVF and the functioning of cattle IVF system to produce antelope embryos. Cauda epididymal sperm were collected from the antelope and cryopreserved under field conditions. In vitro matured domestic cow, blesbok and springbok oocytes were co-incubated in modified-Tyrode Lactate (m-TL) IVF media with springbok, impala and blesbok sperm for heterologous IVF and springbok and blesbok sperm for homologous IVF. A group of presumptive zygotes from each treatment were examined for sperm penetration and male pronuclear formation after 18h and the remainder were cultured and evaluated for embryo cleavage 22h later. The study shows that Modified Tyrode Lactate in vitro fertilization media supports survivability, capacitation and hyperactivation of springbok, impala and blesbok sperm. Springbok, impala and blesbok post-thawed epididymal spermatozoa are capable of fertilizing domestic cow oocytes under conditions that support domestic cattle IVF. Penetration, male pronuclear formation and embryo cleavage did not differ (p >0.05) between cow oocytes inseminated with sperm from springbok, impala or blesbok however these parameters were higher (p <0.05) for oocytes inseminated with bull sperm. Modified Tyrode Lactate IVF media supported homologous fertilization and embryo development in springbok and blesbok however did not support blastocyst development. These findings suggest that cattle provide a useful model for evaluating springbok, impala and blesbok post-thawed cauda epididymal sperm functionality. Domestic cattle embryo culture conditions need to be modified to promote blastosyst development in these antelope species. Human-mediated hybridization poses a serious threat to the genetic integrity of threatened inter-fertile species or subspecies, such as the bontebok ( Damaliscus pygargus pygargus) and blesbok ( Damaliscus pygargus phillipsi) in South Africa. The identification of pure and admixed populations is key to sound biodiversity conservation management and practices. Where identification based on morphometric measurements are complex, molecular analysis can provide a tool to identify hybrids or introgression in populations. This study provides the first molecular analyses on pure bontebok and blesbok as well as putative hybrid populations and samples of unknown purity. Analysis of a panel of 13 microsatellite markers by applying a Bayesian model-based clustering programme provided evidence of clear partitioning between the two subspecies. Hybridization was detected in 33 % (40 of 121) of the samples with unknown purity. Currently, bontebok is listed as protected under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora and is listed as endangered under the United States of America's Endangered Species Act. Our research found that the microsatellite markers used in this study could accurately identify pure and hybrid animals and can be used as a tool to conserve the genetic integrity of both subspecies. Damaliscus pygargus is an endemic species in South Africa belonging to the contemporary antelope tribe Alcelaphine. The species has been subdivided into two subspecies based upon phenotypic differences and historical geographic isolation. We found D. p. pygargus (bontebok) and D. p. phillipsi (blesbok) to be significantly differentiated based on microsatellite and mtDNA control region markers. Bontebok genetic diversity was depauperate with just one mtDNA haplotype, not found in blesbok populations, and reduced heterozygosity and polymorphism at microsatellite DNA loci compared to the blesbok. Erosion of molecular genetic variation in bontebok may have been due to anthropogenic impact causing isolation and reduced population size. Our data based on 34 bontebok and 42 blesbok indicate that the classification of alpha taxonomy should be reconsidered in this genus (in support of earlier similar suggestions), and that careful management should seek to avoid hybridization and retain the remaining diversity in the bontebok. Abstract: The middle Pleistocene fossil mammal assemblage from Lainyamok in the southern Kenya rift has previously been considered the oldest (330–392ka) African mammal community consisting entirely of extant species, with the dominant bovid tentatively attributed to the southern African blesbok (Damaliscus cf. dorcas). We show that the blesbok-like fossils from Lainyamok belong to an extinct species, described here as Damaliscus hypsodon sp. nov. The D. hypsodon hypodigm includes the previously unnamed small alcelaphine material known from late Pleistocene sites elsewhere in Kenya and Tanzania. Its dental anatomy, together with an ecomorphological analysis of its postcrania, indicates that D. hypsodon grazed in open and arid grassland environments. Although Lainyamok is no longer represented entirely by extant species, the absence of species common earlier in the middle Pleistocene of East Africa suggests substantial faunal turnover between 500 and 400ka. Damaliscus hypsodon persisted in East Africa until the end of the Pleistocene and its extinction can be attributed to a loss of arid grassland environments at the onset of the Holocene. The fossil evidence from southern Kenya suggests that the development of the taxonomically modern large mammal community was a long-term process characterized by the extinction of grazing specialists, with marked turnover occurring between ~500 and 400ka and near the end of the Pleistocene. Abstract: The need for information on the reproductive physiology of different wildlife species is important for ex situ conservation using such methods as in vitro fertilization (IVF). Information on species reproductive physiology and evaluation of sperm quality using accurate, objective, repeatable methods, such as computer-assisted sperm analysis (CASA) for ex situ conservation has become a priority. The aim of this study was to evaluate motility patterns of antelope epididymal spermatozoa incubated for 4 h under conditions that support bovine IVF using CASA. Cauda epididymal spermatozoa were collected postmortem from testicles of springbok (N = 38), impala (N = 26), and blesbok (N = 42), and cryopreserved in biladyl containing 7% glycerol. Spermatozoa were thawed and incubated in Capacitation media and modified Tyrode lactate (m-TL) IVF media using a protocol developed for domestic cattle IVF. The study evaluates 14 motility characteristics of the antelope epididymal sperm at six time points using CASA. Species differences in CASA parameters evaluated under similar conditions were observed. Several differences in individual motility parameters at the time points were reported for each species. Epididymal sperm of the different antelope species responded differently to capacitation agents exhibiting variations in hyperactivity. Motility parameters that describe the vigor of sperm decreased over time. Spermatozoa from the different antelope species have different physiological and optimal capacitation and in vitro culture requirements. The interspecies comparison of kinematic parameters of spermatozoa between the antelopes over several end points contributes to comparative sperm physiology which forms an important step in the development of species specific assisted reproductive techniques (ARTs) for ex situ conservation of these species. The Muscularis Iongissimus dorsi of eight blue wildebeest (Connochaetus taurinus), collected at Sandveld Nature Reserve, South Africa, were analysed for biochemical and physical characteristics and chemical composition. The initial (6.60) and final (5.41) pH, drip loss (4.91%), cooking loss (39.42%) and maximum Warner-Bratzler shear force (4.91 kg/ 1.27 cmo) were comparable to values found in meat from several other African game species (black wildebeest, blesbok, duiker, impala, red hartebeest, reedbuck, springbok, warthog). Like other wild ungulates, blue wildebeest meat had a higher crude protein (22.28%) and lower lipid (1.06%) content compared to beef, which makes it a healthy alternative to traditional red meat. Abstract: Cryopreservation of antelope epididymal spermatozoa could play a vital role in future breeding by developing a successful protocol for cryo-conserving them. The aim of this study was to characterize morphology, motility rates and longevity of epididymal spermatozoa from springbok, impala and blesbok. Cauda epididymal spermatozoa were collected post-mortem from both testicles of free-ranging springbok (n =18), impala (n =21) and blesbok (n =21), and divided into two groups (pre- and post-cryopreservation). Spermatozoa were cryopreserved in Biladyl supplemented with 20% egg yolk and 7% glycerol under field conditions. Pre-freeze and post-thaw sperm quality was evaluated. The longevity of thawed spermatozoa was evaluated under culture conditions that support domestic cattle in vitro fertilization. There was a significant difference between pre-freeze and post-thaw sperm motility index (SMI) (p <0.05), plasma membrane integrity (p <0.05) and acrosome integrity (p <0.05) for all species. Post-thaw SMI and plasma membrane integrity were comparable between species (p >0.05). The effects of cryopreservation on sperm cell morphology differed between species and between specific abnormal morphology. Blesbok had the least abnormalities in post-thaw spermatozoa. Cryopreservation substantially reduced the survivability and motility rates of antelope species. Blesbok spermatozoa tolerated cryopreservation and thawing process better than impala and springbok. The antelope cauda epididymal sperm maintained viability and acrosome integrity for at least 4h following incubation under conditions that support domestic cattle in vitro fertilization (IVF) with a decline in longevity over time across species however; species responded differently over time in terms of plasma membrane integrity and acrosome integrity. The antelope species may have different in vitro culture requirements, indicating differences in sperm physiology between the species. Abstract: The proximate composition of milk from free ranging blesbok, black wildebeest and blue wildebeest is reported, with detailed analysis of fatty acid composition and protein identification by electrophoresis. The milk of the blesbok, black- and blue wildebeest contain respectively 5.6±0.3, 4.3±0.7 and 4.1±0.9 g/100 g protein, 8.6±1.1, 5.5±1.5 and 7.5±2.1 g/100 g fat, and 4.9±0.4, 4.1±0.6 and 5.3±1.6 g/100 g lactose, and are comparable with ovine milk. The milk contains high levels of saturated fatty acids, respectively, 82.5±1.7 g/100 g, 75.2±1.5 g/100 g and 88.2±1.8 g/100 g milk fat. The medium carbon chain length saturated fatty acids 8:0, 10:0 and 12:0 occur in the highest amounts recorded so far in ruminant milk, and the 14:0 content is the highest recorded in any milk. This suggests a genetic characteristic of the Alcelaphinae that reflects on the specificity and activity of the thioesterase involved in the fatty acid synthesis. Abstract: The aim of this study was to describe the chemical composition of blesbok meat as influenced by region and sex. M. longissimus dorsi from both sexes of adult blesbok from different regions (Maria Moroka, Gariep, Qua-Qua and Rustfontein in the Free State Province, South Africa) were measured for chemical composition, cholesterol, fatty acid, amino acid and mineral contents. Sex had no influence on any of the chemical components evaluated. Region had an effect (P<0.05) on lipid (1.01%) and individual amino acid contents. The saturated fatty acids palmitic acid (16.36%) and stearic acid (26.08%) were found to be the main fatty acids in blesbok meat. Blesbok meat has a ratio of polyunsaturated to saturated fatty acids of 0.92. Cholesterol content (52.76mg100g−1 edible portion) is similar to that of other red meat species. Values for amino acids were in general higher, and for minerals lower, than the values reported for meat from two other African ungulates that are harvested for meat, the common duiker and the impala. Meat from the blesbok can be described as a red meat with a favourable fatty acid profile, and relatively low lipid and cholesterol contents. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A database of approximately 9000 trophy measurements of ungulates hunted in South Africa between 1993 and 2001 was analysed in order to detect species-specific, regional variation in mean trophy quality. Blesbok (Damaliscus dorcas), eland (Taurotragus oryx), impala (Aepyceros melampus), kudu (Tragelaphus strepsiceros), mountain reedbuck (Redunca fulvorufula) and springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) showed statistically significant variation in trophy quality. A number of other species including blue wildebeest (Connochaetus taurinus), black wildebeest (Connochaetus gnou), bushbuck (Tragelaphus angusticeps), common reedbuck (Redunca redunca), gemsbok (Oryx gazella), red hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus), nyala (Tragelaphus angasii) and waterbuck (Kobus ellipsiprymnus) were insignificant. The manipulation of trophy quality on ranches is speculated to be the major cause of these significant regional variations. It is recommended that species-specific baselines of trophy quality and associated levels of 'acceptable manipulation' be established and incorporated into a national trophy quality monitoring programme to provide some level of protection to an industry that contributes significantly to the South African economy. Abstract: Lactobacillus plantarum 423, producer of bacteriocin 423, Lactobacillus curvatus DF38, producer of curvacin DF38, and a bacteriocin-negative mutant of L. plantarum 423 (423m) were evaluated as starter cultures in the production of salami from beef, horse, mutton, Blesbok (Damaliscus dorcas phillipsi) and Springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis). Growth of L. plantarum 423 and L. curvatus DF38 was best supported in Blesbok salami, as revealed by the highest growth rate during sweating, cold smoking and maturation, and final cell numbers after 70 days (1×108 and 5×107 cfu/g, respectively). Growth of Listeria innocua was the best suppressed in Blesbok salami fermented with L. plantarum 423 and L. curvatus DF38. Growth of L. innocua in horse salami was best suppressed when fermented with L. curvatus DF38. The final pH of salami fermented with L. plantarum 423 and L. plantarum 423m was slightly lower (4.4) compared to the pH of salami produced with L. curvatus DF38 (pH 4.7). No significant differences (P >0.05) were recorded by a trained sensory taste panel amongst the three starter cultures regarding colour and venison like aroma. Horse, Blesbok and Springbok salami were rated significantly higher (P ⩽0.05) in salami flavour than mutton salami, which was rated the lowest for this attribute. Blesbok salami was rated the highest for sour meat aroma, while beef salami was rated the lowest. Springbok salami was rated the highest in terms of oily mouth feel. Beef salami had the most compact structure and horse salami the softest structure of all meat types fermented. In general, salami produced with L. plantarum 423 yielded the best sour meat aroma, colour, texture, venison like flavour, sour meat flavour and oily mouthfeel and is considered superior to the L. plantarum mutant (strain 423m) and L. curvatus DF38. A database of approximately 9000 trophy measurements of ungulates hunted in South Africa between 1993 and 2001 was analysed in order to detect monotonic trends in trophy quality over time. In a species-specific analysis, declines were found for impala (Aepyceros melampus), springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis) and mountain reedbuck (Redunca fulvorufula). In an area-specific analysis, a decline was found in the Northern Cape Province. Conversely, blesbok (Damaliscus dorcas phillipsi) (species-specific) and the Free State Province (area-specific) showed increases in trophy quality. As a charismatic carnivore that is vulnerable to extinction, many studies have been conducted on predation by the cheetah Acinonyx jubatus. Cheetah are generally considered to capture medium-sized prey; however, which species are actually preferred and why has yet to be addressed. We used data from 21 published and two unpublished studies from six countries throughout the distribution of the cheetah to determine which prey species were preferred and which were avoided using Jacobs' index. The mean Jacobs' index value for each prey species was used as the dependent variable in multiple regression, with prey abundance and prey body mass as predictive variables. Cheetah prefer to kill and actually kill the most available prey present at a site within a body mass range of 23–56 kg with a peak (mode) at 36 kg. Blesbok, impala, Thomson's and Grant's gazelles, and springbok are significantly preferred, whereas prey outside this range are generally avoided. The morphological adaptations of the cheetah appear to have evolved to capture medium-sized prey that can be subdued with minimal risk of injury. Coincidentally, these species can be consumed rapidly before kleptoparasites arrive. These results are discussed through the premise of optimality theory whereby decisions made by the predator maximize the net energetic benefits of foraging. Information is also presented that allows conservation managers to determine which prey species should be in adequate numbers at cheetah reintroduction sites to support a cheetah population. Conversely, these results will illustrate which potential prey species of local conservation concern should be monitored for impact from cheetahs as several species are likely to be preyed upon more frequently than others. The essential amino acid (EAA) profile of the duodenal digesta and whole empty body of springbok (Antidorcas marsupialis), blesbok (Damaliscus dorcas phillipsi) and impala (Aepyceros melampus) were investigated. Significant differences were found between the whole empty body EAA composition of the three game species, whether protein quantity was taken into account (g AA/100 g crude protein (CP)) or not (expressed as % of lysine). The chemical scores indicated that the four most limiting amino acids (three for impala) in the duodenal digesta for whole empty body growth were: arginine, histidine, threonine, methionine for springbok; methionine, arginine, histidine, lysine for blesbok and methionine, histidine, arginine for impala. Excess levels of amino acids tends to be present in the duodenal digesta of blesbok (isoleucine) and impala (lysine, valine, leucine, threonine, isoleucine, phenylalanine).
