Objective: The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of teeth bleaching on oral health and quality of life (OHIP-14) in adults who have undergone office bleaching treatment.Material and Methods: One hundred patients who applied to our clinic for bleaching treatment between 2016-2021 and underwent bleaching treatment with Opalescence Boost 40% PF were included in the study. Pre-treatment color determination is routinely done for each patient in the clinic. They were divided into four different groups as follow-up patients in 3rd month for Group 1, 6th month for Group 2, 1st year for Group 3, and 2nd year follow-up patients for Group 4 (n=25). Shade guide unit (ΔSGU) values were calculated for the patients using the Vita Classic color scale. In addition, the OHIP-14 questionnaire was applied to each patient to evaluate the effect of bleaching on oral health and quality of life. Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis tests were performed at P.05). In terms of color change, no significant difference compared to baseline levels with the measurements made at the 3rd, 6th months, and 1st and 2nd years (P.>05, =0.81).Conclusion: After the bleaching treatment, the color remained stable for two years. However, a positive psychosocial effect and improved self-perception occurred in the patients.Key Words: Bleaching treatment, OHIP-14, quality of life

To obtain a more appealing wood coating with lighter color, bleaching treatment was employed. Bleached and unbleached bio-polyurethane (PU) coating was prepared using liquefied bamboo and was applied to rubberwood. The coated wood surface was examined for adhesion, scratch, abrasion, impact, and resistance to common household chemicals. The results revealed that the bleaching of liquefied bamboo exerted mixed effects on the finishing properties of the bio-PU coating. Specifically, the surface coated with unbleached bio-PU coating exhibited noticeably higher levels of scratch and impact resistance compared to the surface coated with bleached bio-PU coating. However, both the adhesion and abrasion properties were found to be similar in both cases. Both bleached and unbleached bio-PU coating exhibited similar resistance to various household chemicals, with exception of acetic acid. This research demonstrated a method for producing semi-transparent bio-PU from bamboo biomass for use in wood coating. Bleaching treatment is feasible to produce light-colored coating without significantly affecting the finishing properties of the bio-PU coating.

The results of this study can serve as a reference in understanding the strength performance of natural fiber geotextile, specifically coir geotextile, as an alternative material for slope stabilization. Slope stability is one of the crucial factors to consider in every civil engineering project. One widely used method to stabilize slope is the use of polymeric products called geosynthetics. Natural fiber geosynthetics used for geotechnical applications have attracted attention because of their environmental and economic benefits. Coir fibers made into nonwoven geotextiles are utilized in this study as an alternative material for slope stabilization. One drawback of coir fiber geotextiles is their low tensile strength and limited life span due to their susceptibility to environmental factors. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of mercerization and bleaching treatment on the strength performance of nonwoven coir geotextiles after exposure to conditions simulating biological and chemical degradation. The effect of various washing processes carried out under industrial conditions on the bagging properties of denim fabrics has been studiedin order to understand why residual bagging height behavior remains after garment uses due to internal stress, shrinkage, and excessive extensions. Three different washes have been used for denim samples, already dyed with vat indigo. To evaluate the washing treatment contributions to the bagging behaviors of all studied samples, the residual bagging height characteristic is investigated. It is studied before and after each washing treatment (desizing, enzyme washing, and bleaching). The results show that the residual bagging height increases after all types of washing treatments except for the bleaching ones. Nevertheless, the washed elastomeric denim fabrics (within elastane filament percentages) present significant recovery rates of bagged fabrics after all applied washes. By comparing the results obtained in this study, it may be concluded that the applied enzymatic washing process affects more the bagging behavior of denim fabrics than those of the desizing and bleaching treatments. Chrysanthemum flowers are usually used for cultural and religious ceremonies however, the chrysanthemum stems are left for open burning or landfilling on many farmlands. These stems are one of the sources of agricultural waste in Malaysia that cause environmental impacts. In order to reduce the impact of chrysanthemum stems, this research study has utilised these valuable chrysanthemum stems in producing a new polymer composite. Hence, the present research study focuses on the preparation of non-woven and woven chrysanthemum stem fibre (CSF) reinforced unsaturated polyester (UPs) composites via simple hand lay-up method. The results showed the tensile properties (tensile strength and modulus of elasticity) of woven fibre filled UPs was higher than non-woven fibre filled UPs composites. However, non-woven fibre filled UPs presented higher water absorption and elongation at break as compared to woven fibre filled UPs composites. Furthermore, bleaching treatment with hydrogen peroxide is carried out in order to improve the tensile properties and water resistance of UPs/CSF composites. The functional groups of unbleached and bleached fibres were analysed using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis. Recipes for bleaching of coconut fiber at both ambient and elevated temperature were investigated using appropriate statistical design of experiments using hydrogen peroxide with essential bleaching assisting auxiliaries. The statistical tool is also being utilized to suggest optimized recipe for the treatments considering mainly whiteness index, yellowness index, and tenacity. Statistical computation affirmed need of higher amount of bleaching chemicals in elevated temperature than ambient bleaching. Both the bleaching treatments were resulting in small mass loss essentially of noncellulosic nature including lignin and thus result in improved mechanical properties. The change in whiteness and yellowness index of the bleached fiber under the shed storage condition for duration of 2 years was found to be negligible.

This research covers the preparation of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)/sugarcane leaves fibre (SLF) biofilms via a solvent-casting method. The results showed that the tensile strength and Young's modulus of PLA/SLF biofilms increased with the increasing of SLF content. Nevertheless, the elongation at break showed an opposite trend as compared to tensile strength and Young's modulus of biofilms. Moreover, water absorption properties of PLA/SLF biofilms increased with the increasing of SLF content. In contrast, the tensile strength and Young's modulus of biofilms were enhanced after bleaching treatment with hydrogen peroxide on SLF, but the elongation at break and water absorption properties of bleached biofilms were reduced due to the improvement of filler–matrix adhesion in biofilms. The tensile and water properties were further discussed using B-factor and Fick's law, respectively. This study covered the preparation and characterization of durian husk cellulose (DHC)‐filled chitosan (CS) biocomposite films. The effects of the DHC content and bleaching treatment via hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) on the tensile and thermal properties of the CS/DHC biocomposite films were investigated. The results showed that the tensile strength and percentage of elongation at break decreased with increasing DHC contents, but the modulus of elasticity of the CS/DHC biocomposite films increased along with the DHC contents. The bleaching treatment of the durian husk is to remove the lignin content to form bleached DHC, resulting in an improvement of tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and thermal properties of bleached CS/DHC biocomposite films. The functional groups of the unbleached and bleached DHC filler were proved by the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis, and the thermal stability and glass transition temperature (Tg) of the CS/DHC biocomposite films were measured by the thermogravimetry analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis, respectively. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) on odontoblast-like MDPC-23 cells exposed to carbamide peroxide (CP 0.01 %-2.21 μg/mL of HO). The cells were seeded in sterile 24-well plates for 72 h. Eight groups were established according to the exposure or not to the bleaching agents and the laser energy doses tested (0, 4, 10, and 15 J/cm). After exposing the cells to 0.01 % CP for 1 h, this bleaching solution was replaced by fresh culture medium. The cells were then irradiated (three sections) with a near-infrared diode laser (InGaAsP-780 ± 3 nm, 40 mW), with intervals of 24 h. The 0.01 % CP solution caused statistically significant reductions in cell metabolism and alkaline phosphate (ALP) activity when compared with those of the groups not exposed to the bleaching agent. The LLLT did not modulate cell metabolism; however, the dose of 4 J/cm increased the ALP activity. It was concluded that 0.01 % CP reduces the MDPC-23 cell metabolism and ALP activity. The LLLT in the parameters tested did not influence the cell metabolism of the cultured cells; nevertheless, the laser dose of 4 J/cm increases the ALP activity in groups both with and without exposure to the bleaching agent. In this work, biodegradable composites from poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) fiber were prepared by melt blending method. Prior to mixing, the fiber was modified through bleaching treatment using hydrogen peroxide. Bleached fiber composite showed an improvement in mechanical properties as compared to untreated fiber composite due to the enhanced fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion. Interestingly, fiber bleaching treatment also improved the physical appearance of the composite. The study was extended by blending the composites with commercially available masterbatch colorant. In this study, the effect of corona discharge treatment on the physical and mechanical properties of bleached cotton and polyester-cotton fabrics were investigated. For this purpose, the samples were treated by corona discharge at two levels of voltage 5 and 10 kV, and at various duration times of plasma, ca. 1.4, 2.1 and 3.5 min. The corona discharge treatment was applied on the fabric samples before and after bleaching treatment. The results show that the corona influences on the surface morphology, breaking strength, air permeability, abrasion resistance, and pilling of cotton and polyester-cotton fabrics. Food packaging has seen a growth in the use of materials derived from renewable resources such as poly(lactic acid) (PLA). However, the initial costs to produce bioplastics are typically high. Tropical fruit waste as naturally sourced fibres, such as jackfruit skin, can be used as a cost-reducing filler for PLA. The main objective in this study is to fabricate a low-cost natural fibre-reinforced polymer that potentially applies in packaging with the aid of bleaching treatment. The treatment shows a rougher surface fibre in Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrographs and it is expected to have better mechanical locking with the matrix, and this is found similar with a Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis. Unfortunately, fibre insertion does find low tensile performances, yet bleached-fibre composites improved its performance significantly. A similar situation was found in the thermal characterization where a low-thermal stability natural fibre composite has lower thermal behaviour and this increased with bleaching treatment. Besides, bleached-fibre composites have a longer service period. Besides, a 15 wt% thymol insertion inhibits the growth of Gram-positive bacteria in the composites and the non-treated fibre composite has better thymol effects. The 30 wt% of the bleached-fibre insertion composite has a high potential to reduce the cost of bioplastic products with minimum alterations of overall performances. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cellulose and lignin were simultaneously isolated from rice bran is an interesting and alternative renewable materials synthesis for industrial application. In the present research, acid pre-treatment (AT) (85 % organic acid, 80 °C, 120 min) has been proposed for the fractionation of lignin from rice bran (RB). After end of the pre-treatment, residual RB was further submitted to bleaching treatment (BT) (1.7 % sodium chlorite, 60 °C, 120 min) for fractionation of cellulose fibres. The isolated lignin structure was extensively characterized using UV–vis spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and matrix assisted laser desorption/ionisation-time of flight-mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF-MS). In addition, surface morphology and surface elemental composition of untreated rice bran (UT-RB), acid treated rice bran (AT-RB) and bleaching treatment rice bran (BT-RB) were performed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), SEM, XRD and FTIR. Les auteurs étudient les caractères chimiques et physiques de trois charbons végétaux ainsi que quelques paramètres pouvant influer sur leur efficacité (teneur en colloïdes, température de traitement, etc.). Ils montrent que le traitement de décoloration d'un moût de raisins Pinot noir ne modifie que très légèrement les composés aromatiques du vin obtenu. Ils observent que le traitement par le charbon des vins blancs madérisés entraîne une modification de leurs teneurs en composés aromatiques qui dépend, en premier lieu, du type de charbon utilisé. L'instabilité à l'oxydation des vins traités semble liée à la structure chimique du charbon. +++ Chemical and physical properties of three vegetal charcoals and their efficiency according to some parameters (colloid level, temperature of treatment) were studied. It was shown that bleaching treatment of a red Pinot noir must changed very slightly the aromatic compounds of the corresponding wine. For oxidised white wines, changes in the level of aromatic compounds occured, firstly according to the tye of charcoal used. The instability of treated wines toward oxidation appared in connection with the chemical structure of the charcoal.

In a recent editorial (Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci., 2013 110, E2144-E2146) and elsewhere, questions have been raised regarding the experimental practices in relation to the proteomic analysis of organic matrices associated to the biomineralized CaCO3 skeletons of metazoans such as molluscan shells and coral skeletons. Indeed, although the use of new high sensitivity MS technology potentially allows to identify a greater number of proteins, it is also equally (or even more) sensitive to contamination of residual proteins from soft tissues, which are in close contact with the biomineral. Based on our own past and present experimental know-how-observations that are reproducible and coherent with the current understanding of extracellular biomineralization processes-we are convinced that a careful and appropriate cleaning of biominerals prior to any analysis is crucial for accurate proteomic investigations and subsequent pertinent interpretation of the results. Our goal is to alert the scientific community about the associated bias that definitely should be avoided, and to provide critical recommendations on sample preparation and experimental design, in order to better take advantage of the aptness of proteomic approaches aiming at improving our understanding of the molecular mechanisms in biomineralization., (© 2013 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co.
