The aim of the study is to investigate the differences in body composition between differently trained men and women. This research included 159 participants (84 male and 75 female) divided into 5 groups according to activity level: PI - physically inactive, PA - physically active, SP - strength and power athletes, EA - endurance athletes, TS - team sports athletes. The testing procedure of measuring body composition was carried out by the use of bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA, InBody 720). Of the statistical analysis, ANOVA and MANOVA were used. The results showed that there is a significant difference in body composition parameters between differently trained men and women (p = 0.000; F = 2.470; η² = 0.356, on average). Both in groups of men and women the biggest differences were observed between PI, EA and other groups (F = from 9.656 to -1.673, p = from 0.000 to 0.043; F = from 10.966 to 1.073, p = from 0.000 to 0.050, respectively). The results showed that every physical activity is beneficial from the aspect of body composition status and that the most crucial factor in improving body composition status is the regularity of physical activity. It has been shown that regular physical activity leads to a decrease in muscle fat and an increase in muscle mass and protein. Also, it has been shown that practicing a physical activity typical for endurance sports has the most significant positive impact on body composition status and leads to a significant decrease in body fat mass.

Introduction: The assessment of body composition through the analysis of Bioelectrical Impendance (BIA) has increased in clinical practice and hospital with on the parameter of the phase angle (PA) with application in the prognosis of the development of several diseases. Objective: To evaluate the application of the phase angle in the evolution of the treatment of overweight or obese individuals. Materials and Methods: Critical narrative review through bibliographic survey of scientific materials and articles on the application of the PA as a tool in cases involving overweight or obesity. Results: The PA is related to the integrity of the cell membrane may indicate the evolution and severity of a disease and cellular balance especially in individuals with an inflammatory profile who are at high risk of oxidative stress and cell damage. Factors such as ethnicity, sex and age interfere with the use of the PA as a monitoring tool of the evolution of overweight and obesity making its isolated application difficult for this case. The lack of studies for populations and the lack of standardization in obtaining data limit the use in clinical and hospital practice when related exclusively to monitoring the evolution of overweight and obesity. Conclusion: The PA has potential as an auxiliary tool in the prognosis of overweight and obese individuals. The lack of reference values for this public is an obstacle to its application in clinical and hospital practice requiring more specific studies by ethnicity, sex, and age groups. AEROBIC capacity , *BODY composition , *PHYSICAL training & conditioning , *INFANTRY , *PHYSICAL mobility , *FOOT - Abstract
Body composition encompasses a series of variables that are health-related and influence physical condition. Nevertheless, there is little evidence on its effects on the operational capacity of the military. The objective of this study was to relate the body composition, the physical condition and the operational capacity of the Chilean military. Fifty-seven Chilean soldiers (26.9 ± 4.8 years) participated, with operational specialization in infantry. Body composition was evaluated with octopolar bioimpedance, estimating fatfree mass, muscle tissue, and adipose tissue, among other variables. The following physical condition tests were also carried out: 5000 m flat, pull-ups, abdominals and flexibility, as well as four specific tests of specific military operational activities (simulated combat situation). The results showed a percentage of muscle tissue of 45.4 ± 2.9 % (95%CI: 44.6 - 46.2), while the percentage of adipose tissue was 20.3 ± 4.9 % (95%CI).: 14.7-17.3). Negative correlations of small magnitude were found between race time (5000 m) and muscle tissue (%) (r = -0.275) and positive with adipose tissue (%) (r = 0.294). However, high magnitude correlations were observed between pull-ups and muscle tissue (%) (r = 0.517) and adipose tissue (%) (r = -0.558). Adipose tissue was negatively related to aerobic capacity, arm strength, and abdominal endurance strength, while muscle tissue was positively related to these same variables. No correlations were found between body composition and military operational capacity (p<0.05). It is concluded that body composition and physical condition are not related to military operational capacity in combat situations in infantry specialists, but body composition is related to strength and cardiorespiratory capacity. VOLTAGE , *URODYNAMICS , *BLADDER - Abstract
Electrical bioimpedance (EBI) is a non-invasive technique for monitoring bladder volume. The EBI approaches global impedance (GI), impedance ratio method (IRM), and voltage change ratio (VCR) have been successfully applied to detect changes in the volume of objects with constant but unknown conductivity. In this work, simulated and in-vitro experiments are used to compare the performance of these methods with respect to a new approach proposed by some authors and called modified VCR (MVCR). Experimental results indicated that GI, VCR, and MVCR indices increase when the volume of the object under study increases. On the other hand, no direct or inverse relationship between IRM and volume was observed. The coefficient of variation, defined as the interquartile range divided by the median of a set of measurements, was lower for MVCR, which indicates that the proposed approach is less sensitive to measurement noise than the other three methods.

Athletes differ among themselves and one of the main differences is observed in relation to body shape and composition. Achieving top sports performance requires more standardization in the processes of training and development of a unique methodology for individualizing the control specific adaptation of athletes. The aim of this study is to establish reference data for the most sensitive variables to define the amount and structure of body fat in female athletes in individual sports. The sample included 895 females, divided in: a control group (Cont) of young females (N = 688); International (N = 113), and National level female athletes (N = 94) in 13 individual sports. Four variables described the structureof of body fat: Percentage of body fat (PBF), Body Fat Mass Index (BFMI), Protein Fat Index (PFI) and Index of Body Composition (IBC). Results showed that considering the control group, female athletes have all examined Body Fat variables statistically significantly different (BFMI and PBF are lower, p = 0.011 and p = 0.000, while PFI and IBC are higher, p = 0.000, respectively). Female athletes are also statistically significantly different in relation to the level of competition (p = 0.000), and the investigated variables are responsible for 17.7 % of the variability of the difference between the groups. Competitively more successful female athletes have higher IBC (lower percentage of fat per overall body volume, p = 0.013), as well as, a statistically significantly higher protein mass in relation to body fat mass (PFI, p = 0.018). The most sensitive variables for defining body fat differences between the examined individual sports were IBC, with an influence of 37.9 %, then PFI (32.4 %), then PBF (22.8 %), and finally BFMI, with an influence of 11.4 % on the differences. Based on the results of this study, IBC and PFI are variables that have shown useful scientific-methodological potential for research in the future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Bioimpedance provides phase angle data, and it is used to monitor athletes. Muscle strength and power are important physiological/motor characteristics in sports that involve intense movement. The aim of this study was to verify the relationships between body composition, phase angle and upper/lower limb strength in adolescent athletes from different sports. The sample consisted of 473 athletes (Male: 285 and Female: 188), with a mean age of 16.4+1.2 years. The adopted statistic was Principal Component Analysis, with analysis groups formed as General, Male and Female. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin and Bartlett's (p<0.01) tests showed good results to follow Principal Component Analysis. The total variance showed that the formation of components was three for General, four for Male and five for Female, where the variance explained by the Principal Component Analysis in each group was 73.9%, 78.7% and 83.1%, respectively. The phase angle is a relatively new variable when evaluating in the sports context, it proved to be important in monitoring the physical condition of adolescent athletes, where in activities that are requested, a more advantageous muscle condition is presented when muscle mass is increased, where in addition to having a good relationship with strength, and it is also related to the variables of body composition and Bioimpedance. Cryolipolysis is a non-invasive technique used to reduce localized body fat mass. The changes in fat percentage have been assessed by many analytical methods, including bioelectrical impedance analysis. The most common effects of cryolipolysis on reducing subcutaneous fat tissue have been addressed but potential changes in biochemical and hematological biomarkers have been not safely approached. This study investigates potential changes in hematological and inflammatory biomarkers following the reduction of body fat mass. A prospective longitudinal approach included a total of 20 participants divided into groups of 5 men and women in each with ages between 25 and 45 years. They were submitted to standard cooling exposure for 60 minutes at -5°C and -10°C with 360° and "shielded" equipment, respectively. The blood samples were analyzed at times T0 (baseline), T1 (2 days), T2 (14 days), T3 (30 days) and T4 (60 days) after the procedure. The percentage of body fat mass were analyzed by bioimpedance at times T0 (baseline), T1(30 days), T2 (60 days), T3 (90 days) and T4 (120 days). No changes in hematological and inflammatory biomarkers serum levels were observed in both temperatures. Bioimpedance analysis revealed a reduction in the percentage of body fat mass only in men, with a decrease of 28 (24.5/29.9) compared to 30 (26.2/33.30) when submitted to -5°C after 120 days. These findings support that cryolipolysis can be considered an effective and safe method for localized body fat reduction without significant changes in blood biochemical parameters. Introduction: It is important to recognise body composition as a factor beyond weight, determined by fat, fat-free, mineral, visceral mass, total body water, habits, diet, basal metabolism (genetic component), etc. Individual differences in body composition, body fat distribution, and adipose tissue functions are predictors of the development of vascular and metabolic diseases, independent of sex. Objective: To evaluate body composition in a Colombian population at-tending a private practice in the city of Barranquilla, Atlántico. Materials and methods: Descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study using data from 345 patients between 18 and 60 years of age, collected from medical records, as a result of medical-nutritional consultations at the BiomediKcal-Advanced Medical Nutrition and Lifestyle Center in Barranquilla, all found with the "Tanita MC-780MA" bioimpedance medical equipment. Results: Significant differences in w.kg, BMI, age, height and FFM.kg were found in the population assessed: The mean w.kg (p=0.01) in men was 60.3 kg, the mean w.kg in women was 59.2 kg. Mean BMI (p=0.001) men was 24.5, mean BMI women was 23.8 with a SD of 3.2. The mean age (p=0.001) in men was 39.8 years, in women the mean age was 32.2 years. Mean height (p=0.001) in men 172.4 cm, mean height in women 160.2. The mean FFM.kg (p=0,001) was 40,1 kg in men, in women 39,5 kg. No significant differences were found in the variables %FM (p=0,44) mean 33% in men, mean in women 32,8% and FM.KG (p=0,09) mean in men 20,2 kg and mean in women 19,7 kg. Conclusions: The population evaluated when stratified by gender presented significant differences in multiple variables, based on which strategies can be designed to strengthen the physical health and healthy habits promotion programmes aimed at the Barranquilla community. Electrical bioimpedance (BIA), being a noninvasive technique but with high precision, has become a valuable tool for determining body composition in the military, facilitating the control of the different variables associated with each specialty. The aim of the present study was to describe the body composition profile of elite military personnel at the end of a specialization course. Eleven military personnel between 22 and 29 years of age participated in the study. Body composition was assessed by BIA immediately after completion of a specialization course for elite military personnel. Assessments in the military on body composition variables through BIA showed: body weight of 84.3 ± 4.52 kg, height 1.78 ± 0.06 m, body mass index (BMI) 26.5 ± 1.09, adipose tissue of 13.7 ± 3.65 %, muscle tissue 49.5 ± 2.34 %, fat free mass 72.7 ± 5.23 kg and 53.2 ± 3.78 l of total body water. Conclusions: Elite military personnel presented high levels of fat free mass, muscle tissue and low levels of adipose tissue which favors the development of specialized military activities and decreases the risk of injury. The data collected here serve as a frame of reference for future studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
This project involves developing an application to control a Fast Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy system, optimizing the high-speed capture, processing, and real-time visualization of impedance data from cardiac and pulmonary tissues. These measurements are taken using a specialized catheter, and the system enables direct measurements within the body, facilitating the differentiation of electrical properties between healthy and pathological tissues, such as tumors, based on their resistance and capacitance. The integration of real-time signal processing and communications technologies in this system provides a tool for detailed analysis of tissue response at different frequencies and over time, essential for the precise identification of anomalies. Additionally, the data is stored in a database for subsequent analysis and extraction of conclusions. This approach aims to improve accuracy in the localization and diagnosis of internal lesions, utilizing principles of biomedical engineering, electronics, and telecommunications., Este proyecto consiste en el desarrollo de una aplicación para controlar un sistema de Espectroscopía de Impedancia Eléctrica Rápida, optimizando la captura, procesamiento y visualización en tiempo real de datos de impedancia de tejidos cardíacos y pulmonares. - Abstract
Reliable information about nutritional status, especially body composition from individuals with HD is critical for clinical care and research. The ease of application and portability of multiple frequencies bioelectrical impedance analysis (mfBIA) make it an attractive tool for measuring body composition, but its accuracy in HD is unknown. Aim: To evaluate the accuracy of mfBIA vs. Dual X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) in HD. Patients and methods: Cross-sectional, observational, and single-center study. HD severity was measured using motor subscale of the unified Huntington´s disease rating scale (m-UHDRS) and the total functional capacity (TFC). Body composition was measured in terms of fat-free mass (FFM), fat mass (FM), fat-free mass index (FFMI), and fat mass index (FMI). Using Bland-Altman plots, we analyzed reliability between DEXA and mfBIA using the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient with 95% confidence intervals (CI) and bias estimates for all. Results: We included 16 patients with HD, 7 men, and 9 women, median age of 58.5 (32;68) years, TFC: 10 (3;13), and m-UHDRS: 31 (7;85). The reliability between mfBIA and DEXA were high for FFMI in men: 0.88 (95% CI 0.17-0.98), and women: 0.90 (95% CI 0.61- 0.98); for FMI, men: 0.97 (95% CI 0.83-0.99), and women: 0.91 (95% CI 0.68-0.98). Compared to DEXA, mfBIA slightly overestimated FFM, FM, FMI and FFMI in men and underestimated FFMI in women. Conclusions: mfBIA is an easy-to-use, safe, non-invasive, accurate method for measuring body composition and nutritional status in patients with mild-moderate HD.

- Abstract
Introduction and Objective: Patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) can have up to 40 times more frequency of muskuloskeletal deformities and decreased perception of physical activity tan their pairs. The objective of this study is to evaluate the safety and efficacy of an individualized exercise program in late adolescents and young adults with repaired CDH, as well as a description of their basal status., Material and Methods: Non randomized prospective trial of 13 patients with repaired CDH between 1997-2005. An initial physical exploration and a pre-post assessment of bioimpedance (BIA), dynamometry, maximal inspiratory and expiratory pressure (MIP/MEP), 6-minute walk test (6MWT), physical activity level (IPAQ) and quality of life (QoL) was made. The training program last for 4 weeks. For the statistical analysis, the Student's t test for paired samples and Wilcoxon test were used., Results: 77% (n=10) were male with a mean age of 19.23±2.13 years. In baseline BIA, 62% (n=8) had truncal sarcopenia that improved in -0.43±0.58, and P=.016. MIP, MEP, 6MWT and QoL tests increased by -7.27±8.26 cmH
2 O, P=.008; -11.91±10.20 cmH2 O, P=.002; -70.63±17.88 m, P=.001; -42,19±26.79, P=.00 respectively. The IPAQ did not change significantly (P=0.86), however the time dedicated to muscle strengthening increased. No adverse effects were reported., Conclusions: A personalized rehabilitation program is safe and could improve the respiratory muscle strength and truncal sarcopenia as well as the submaximal effort capacity in late adolescents and young adults with repaired CDH., (Copyright © 2024 Sociedad Española de Rehabilitación y Medicina Física. Introduction: Introduction: cell integrity and fat mass had been studied as a prognostic marker for cancer survival. Objective: our aim was to evaluate the association between tumor aggressiveness and cell integrity changes and adiposity in breast cancer (BC) survivors. Methods: women with BC (n = 114) were evaluated at diagnosis and 5 years later. Percentage of lean mass, fat mass, phase angle (PA), resistance (R) and reactance (Xc) were obtained by bioimpedance (450-50 kHz). Plasma leptin was assessed by immunoassay. Changes in body composition were assessed by the paired t-test or Wilcoxon's test. The disease effect associated with the time of diagnosis was assessed by a generalized linear model. Regression models were structured to assess the prevalence ratio between tumor aggressiveness and body composition changes adjusted for age, income, and level of schooling. Results: patients with N+ (p = 0.02) and % Ki67 > 14 (p = 0.00) show a reduction in Xc. Patients with advanced clinical staging (CS) (p = 0.02), tumors > 2 cm (p = 0.01), N+ (p = 0.01), non-luminal tumors (p = 0.02), ER- (p = 0, 00) and PR- (p = 0.02) show a PA reduction, and N+ patients (p = 0.01) show a reduction in leptin during follow-up. Tumors 2 cm (CI: 0.33-0.95; p = 0.03), initial CS (CI: 0.20-0.93; p = .0.03), and luminal tumors (CI: 0.01-0.95; p = 0.04) are related to a lower reduction in PA. Initial CS (CI: 0.00-0.00; p = 0.00) are related to increased leptin. Conclusion: tumor aggressiveness is associated with cell integrity changes in women who are BC survivors. This research aimed to create a multidimensional equation for predicting an optimal body composition model for elite-level European male volleyball players. The subject sample consisted of 36 elite volleyball players: national team members from two European countries - Slovenia and Serbia - in the 2017 season. Measurement of body composition was carried out using electrical multichannel bioimpedance (BIA - InBody 720), in which 11 variables were used (body height as a longitudinal one, and the other 10 as a system of body composition indicators). Based on the results of descriptive statistics, we can state that elite European male volleyball players are tall, heavy, and with nutritional status at the level of 198.5±6.5 cm, 92.3±5.9 kg and 23.44±1.44 kg•m-2, respectively. The percentage of body fat in the whole sample was 7.91±3.03 %, and the skeletal muscle mass index averaged 12.49±0.80 kg•m-2. For the evaluation and prediction of an optimal body composition model of elite male volleyball players, a multidimensional score (BC_Score) was defined, based on a simple, but sport-specific and playing position-sensitive model equation based on three dominant body characteristics of elite volleyball players: BH, PBF, and SMMI. In this manner, coaches can have a tool for managing the body composition status of players according to position, in terms of a deterministic, fully controlled system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LAPLACE'S equation , *BRAIN damage , *SURFACE potential , *ELECTRIC conductivity , *CEREBROVASCULAR disease - Abstract
Disturbance of the blood supply to the brain is the main cause of cerebrovascular disease. This disturbance may be due to ischemia (thrombosis, arterial embolism) or to hemorrhage. In this study, the feasibility and potentialities of the electrical bioimpedance technique for monitoring unilateral brain damage was analyzed using a computerized model. The simulations were performed on a hemispheric numerical model of the human head. The electric potentials were obtained by solving Laplace's equation in the frequency domain. A hemispheric electrical asymmetry index was introduced that allows determining the approximate location of the damaged region within the damaged hemisphere, and its evaluation was performed for several conductivities and lesion volumes. A negative value was obtained for ischemia (potential amplitude in the ischemic hemisphere greater than in the intact hemisphere), whereas for hemorrhage a positive value was found. The simulations revealed that variations in electrical conductivity and the volume of damaged tissue have an effect on the hemispheric asymmetry of electrical potential at the surface. Introduction: Introduction: obese patients present an inflammatory and metabolic profile that leads to oxidative stress and cellular damage. Phase angle is an indicator of cellular integrity and has been proposed as a prognostic parameter for changes in the metabolic profile. Objective: to investigate the possible association between phase angle and metabolic parameters in obese patients. Material and method: this was a cross-sectional study of adult obese patients who attended a specialized clinic between 2014 and 2016. All patients were ≥ 18 years of age, with a body mass index ≥ 35 kg/m2. All data were obtained from medical records and made part of the clinical protocol. Patients were divided into two groups using a cutoff point for phase angle, and the groups were compared using the Kruskal-Wallis or Chi-squared test for quantitative and categorical variables, respectively. Correlations were identified by Spearman's and Pearson's correlation analyses. All between-group differences were considered statistically significant at p ≤ 0.05. Results: a low phase angle was present in 30.5 % of the 141 patients enrolled in the study. We found an association between low phase angle and presence of hyperuricemia (p = 0.018) when adjusted for waist circumference, dysglycemia, arterial hypertension, and hyperuricemia. There was no correlation between phase angle and the components of body composition. Conclusions: there is an association of phase angle with uric acid levels, but not with other metabolic parameters. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]- Published

- Abstract
Background: Choosing the method of nutritional assessment is essential for proper follow-up of the nutritional status of patients undergoing liver transplantation. Objectives: Evaluate and compare the nutritional status of cirrhotic patients before and after liver transplantation over a year by different methods of nutritional assessment. Methods: Patients undergoing liver transplantation were assessed in five phases: pre-transplant, 1, 3, 6 and 12 months after transplantation at the hospital Santa Casa de Misericordia de Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil. The methods used for nutritional assessment were anthropometry, grip strength of the non-dominant hand (HGS) by dynamometry, thickness of the adductor pollicis muscle (APM) and phase angle (PA) by bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA). In all evaluations, the same measurements were taken. Results: Evaluations were performed in 22 patients. Methods that showed a higher prevalence of malnourished patients before transplantation were PA by BIA (25%), arm muscle circumference (AMC) (21.9%) and arm circumference (AC) (18.8%). When comparing the nutritional status of patients during follow-up, there was a significant difference only in the evaluation methods AC, triceps skinfold thickness and PA by BIA. At the end, the methods of nutritional assessment were compared again. They showed a significant statistical difference, with HGS being the best method for detecting malnutrition. Conclusions: In conclusion, it is suggested that the method PA by BIA could be widely used with this population since the results are consistent with other findings in the literature and they are significant, reliable, and reproducible. Can the Association of Low Intensity and High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) improve the body composition of postmenopausal women? Obesity is an epidemic in this contemporary society. Non-pharmacological treatment standard takes into account the negative energy balance, which is the ratio of decreased caloric intake and increased energy expenditure. Exercise is the most effective strategy to promote the increase in total energy expenditure, which combined with phototherapy, is a very advantageous combination for the treatment of this disease. This study evaluates the low-intensity laser association with interval training high intensity in anthropometric improvement of post-menopausal women and their metabolic effect. We were selected 20 women aged from 50 to 55 years, body mass index between 30 and 34.9 kg/m2, divided into 2 groups, described as a control group (exercise + nutritional education - no incidence of light) and treated group (exercise + nutritional education + incidence of light). The exercise protocol consisted of aerobic exercise and resistance, intense and interval (80%-85% of maximum heart rate), duration of 30 minutes, 3 times per week for 8 weeks. The phototherapy consisted of red LEDs, wavelength 660nm, potency 50mW, intensity 17,7mW/cm2, 10 minutes of treatment time, 30 irradiated points, totaling 318J; applied to the abdominal region after exercise. The proposed treatment was effective, improving all anthropometric parameters analyzed and condition as a new methodology for improving quality of life.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Introduction: Periodontitis (PD) is characterized as a destructive disease that affects the tissues that support the teeth, reaching gums, periodontal ligaments, cement and alveolar bone. Objectives: In the present study, 49 patients were examined to evaluate a possible association between severe chronic periodontitis on cutaneous microvascular reactivity in hypertensive patients. Secondarily, the relationship between body adiposity and periodontitis was also evaluated. Materials and Methods: The periodontal evaluation included measurements of plaque index and bleeding on probing, probing pocket depth and clinical attachment loss. Cutaneous microvascular reactivity was analyzed by means of the Laser Speckle Contrast Imaging (LSCI), while the body fatness was examined through Electric Bioimpedance (BIA). Results: The results showed no significant difference in cutaneous microvascular reactivity in patients with severe chronic periodontitis as compared with periodontally healthy patients. The were no significant differences between hypertensive and normotensive individuals. In relation to body adiposity, periodontitis did not influence the results, but hypertensive patients showed higher fat mass indexes as compared to non-hypertensive patients. Conclusion: In conclusion, severe chronic periodontitis did not influence cutaneous microvascular reactivity and hypertensive individuals had higher body adiposity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ELECTRONIC equipment , *CYPRESS - Abstract
One of the main components for bioimpedance measurement is the current sources, which are designed mainly from discrete analog components. Currently, the decrease in the costs of digital systems and the high scale of integration allow us to propose embedded solutions, substantially reducing the electronic components used. This article presents the design of a bipolar sinusoidal current source for bioimpedance applications based on discrete time feedback systems, fully embedded in a mixed signal device PSoC 5LP CY8C5888AXI-LP096 from Cypress semiconductor mounted on a FreeSoC2 card from SparkFun. The proposed source regulates the peak level of the bipolar current delivered by an embedded discrete time controller, measuring the voltage present in a resistor of known value which is the only element external to the source and this series with the load impedance (Resistance Shunt), achieving working frequencies up to 120 kHz, with load resistors from 50 Ω to 3 kΩ and currents between 500 μA and 2 mA, maintaining a harmonic distortion close to 1% for most of the working range of the source. Profile and standards for the diagnostics of percent of body fat and muscles were defined on a sample of 1924 women from the Republic of Serbia, aged 18.0 to 69.9, where the body structure of subjects was measured by applying multichannel segmental bioimpedance. Total sample was divided into six age groups, for the purpose of the definition of standard with regards to age. When it comes to body fat percentage results have shown that the average value of the total sample was 28.51±9.26%, and between the range of 23.81 and 39.94% for age groups 18.0-19.9 yr and 60.0-69.9 yr, respectively. Regression analysis results have shown that the constant of body fat percentage increase by trend of 3.417% per decade, and that 25.1% of mutual variance trend was explained by the model, with prediction error of 4.55%. With regards to the percentage of skeletal muscles in the body, the results have shown that the average value of the total sample was 39.30±5.25%, and within the range of 42.25 to 32.58% for age groups 18.0-19.9 yr and 60.0-69.9 yr, respectively. Regression analysis results have shown that the constant of the skeletal muscles decrease by tend of -2.016% per decade and that the model explained 23.8% of mutual variance trend with prediction error of 8.08%. Sinusoidal current sources are fundamental components of electronic equipment used in bioimpedance analysis and in electrical impedance tomography. Currently, these sources are mostly implemented as analog electronic systems. The aim of this paper is to present a new approach to current sources design based on discrete-time closed loop control systems. The experimental results are obtained by implementing the current source in a system of analog and digital programmable blocks, and using as a controller a nonlinear difference equation proposed by the authors. This controller guarantees the convergence of the amplitude of the current flowing through the load, towards a user-desired level. This new control law does not require any parametric adjustment nor knowledge of the load. The developed device is able to produce a sinusoidal current signal of a frequency ranging from 100 Hz to 120 kHz and currents from 500 μA to 2 mA. The amplitude error of the current signal remained below 1% for tests performed with resistivecapacitive loads (Cole's type loads). The output impedance is frequency dependent and ranges from 410 kΩ to 966 kΩ. The total harmonic distortion is less than 5%. All the proposed system is embedded in the mixed signal device PSOC 5LP, a shunt resistance being the only external component. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
