Background: breast milk is the ideal food for newborns and infants, but there are factors that can prevent the practice of breastfeeding. Human milk banks (BLH) are a strategy to increase breastfeeding coverage; the donated milk is subjected to Holder pasteurization to guarantee its innocuousness, undergoing large changes in temperature and a decrease in the concentrations of biocomponents such as Immunoglobulin A (IgA) and lactoferrin (LF). This article describes the results of recent studies on the impact of Holder pasteurization on IgA and LF in human milk. Material and methods: a search for research articles related to the topic of interest was carried out in various databases and in accordance with inclusion criteria that considered the type of study, date of publication and quality of the journal. Results: the impact of Holder pasteurization on IgA and LF concentrations is not clear, given that the literature reports a variety of protocols and different results; however, the percentage reductions of both biocomponents are significant and consistent in the studies reviewed, suggesting the importance of establishing a standard protocol for their quantification. Conclusions: Holder pasteurization guarantees the microbiological quality of the milk distributed in HMB, but affects the amount of beneficial biocomponents for the final recipient. Government entities that regulate HMBs should evaluate the possibility of using other techniques that reduce the impact on biocomponents while preserving the microbiological quality of the product. Date palm tree (Phoenix dactylifera) has traditionally been grown in South-West Asia and North Africa, principally for date fruit consumption. Nevertheless, its cultivation has recently spread to other areas of America, sub-Saharan Africa, Oceania and Southern Europe. During date fruit processing, several by-products are generated, like low-quality dates, pits, leaves and pollen. These wastes, together with the date fruit, constitute an important source of biocomponents such as hydroxycinnamic and hydroxybenzoic acids, flavonoids, tannins, carotenoids, tocopherols, tocotrienols, phytosterols and phytoestrogens. This review provides detailed information about the sensory properties, nutritional profile and biocompounds with health-promoting properties present in date fruit and its by-products. Furthermore, recent findings regarding the potential of these products to develop new functional foodstuffs was also highlighted. Several studies have reported that the date fruit and its by-products present an outstanding richness in bioactive compounds with potential healthy properties that make them suitable to be used as nutraceutical ingredients in several foodstuffs. Their incorporation in the formulation of foods would contribute to cover the increasing demand of consumers by products elaborated with natural ingredients. The objective of this study was to obtain fruits with normalized moisture loss and evaluate the addition of chokeberry juice concentrate (CJC) or inulin to osmotic solution for enrichment in bioactives. Mass exchange in osmotically dehydrated strawberries was more effective in the solution in which part of the sucrose (50%) was substituted with CJC or inulin. Both inulin and CJC may be applied for effective dehydration of strawberries. The most significant factors that affected values of mass exchange indicators during osmotic dehydration of strawberries were the type of osmotic solution and time of the process, and the least significant factor was temperature. The partial substitution of sucrose with CJC or inulin enables obtention of products with higher value (less simple sugar) and additionally enriched with valuable natural substances. Osmotic treatment can be used as a method for the infusion of sucrose partly substituted with chokeberry juice concentrate or inulin in a solid food matrix such as frozen strawberry. Antiwear properties of fuels for airbreathing jet engines (AJE) based on three types of rapeseed-oil biocomponents and their blends are studied experimentally. It is shown that the biocomponents are much better lubricants than conventional petroleum fuels for AJE. The studies found that additionof biocomponents to aviation fuel strengthens boundary layers and thereby improves the antiwear properties of the fuel blends. It is demonstrated that additional modification of the biocomponents enhances their lubricating capacity with respect to standard rapeseed-oil components. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new approach for micronutrient fertilizer biocomponent production based on blackcurrant seeds is presented. Blackcurrant seeds constitute a by-product from the production of jellies, jams, and juices. New environmental-friendly fertilizers with micronutrients were produced in the pilot plant as alternative sustainable fertilizers to conventional options. Post-extraction residues, obtained after supercritical CO2 extraction was conducted on blackcurrant seeds, were used. In each process, 15 kg of biosorbent was used. Good sorption capacity was achieved (6.48 mg/g for Zn(II), 13.9 mg/g for Cu(II) and 5.88 mg/g for Mn (II)). The adsorption kinetics was described using different kinetic models; the most suitable were the Nelson-Yoon and Thomas models. The new preparation has application-friendly form (micro-granules) and is nontoxic. For a dose of 2.5 kg of zinc, 1 kg of manganese, and 0.5 kg of copper per hectare (often used in vegetable fertilization), approximately 600 kg of mixed end product is required. The cost of fertilization with current scale technology will be about four times higher than that of conventional technology (including depreciation of equipment), but with process scale-up, it is possible to reduce costs even twice over. A worldwide trend to popularise gradually increasing use of biofuels in various applications was a motivation for gaining interest in FAME as a commonly available biocomponent to fuels combusted in turbine engines. These engines are mainly used in aeronautics, but many of them are also used in other, non-aeronautical areas, including marine navigation. Specific conditions in which fuels are combusted in turbine engines used in these applications are the reason why fuel mixtures of kerosene and FAME type should reveal relevant low temperature characteristics. The article presents results of tests of low temperature properties of mixtures of the jet fuel Jet A-1 and methyl esters of higher fatty acids (FAME). The prepared mixtures contained different contents of FAME. The obtained results present changes of: viscosity, cloud point, pour point, crystallising point, and cold filter plugging point, depending on the percentage by volume of FAME. This publication presents the results of research concerning an improvement of low-temperature properties of HVO paraffinic biocomponents by utilizing zeoformed waste natural oils. The process was performed using a special zeolite catalyst based on the hydrogen form of the ZSM-5 zeolites. This study presents pro-ecological activities focused on an analysis of the use of biofuels as an environmentally friendly fuel. The research objects were different concentration mixtures of diesel fuel and fatty acid methyl esters, that is, transesterified plant oils. The tests involved an assessment of the performance parameters of a drive unit in a vehicle powered by diesel fuel for different mixtures of diesel oil and fatty acid methyl esters in the following proportions: 10%, 30%, 50% and 50% with chemical additives. The tests were comparative and were conducted for 'pure' diesel (ON). The study presents test results of selected performance parameters of the analyzed power unit. The object of the tests was a self-injection engine with a maximum power of 81 kW. The main tests which were most important for assessment of the mixtures, from the point of view of their effect on the analyzed performance parameters, involved measuring power and torque, and the toxic components of exhaust gases. Based on the obtained results, a statistical analysis was carried out, and a model for the evaluation of how the research object functions when fed with different fuel mixtures was developed. The research found which mixture can be considered the most optimal, and what the influence of individual fuel mixtures is on the analyzed performance parameters of the tested power unit. The article provides a closer look into the quality properties of fuels, analyses the merits and demerits of using biocomponents in petrol and diesel and overviews the ways of improving the quality of fuels. Work carried out by the authors covers the determination of the basic quality properties (density, kinematic viscosity and flash point) of petrol, diesel, methanol, ethanol, buthanol as well as rape methyl and rape ethyl esters. A comparative study of the magnetic properties and giant magnetic impedance of Fe19Ni81/Su/Fe19Ni81 film structures fabricated by the method of ion-plasma evaporation is performed versus the geometry of an impedance element. The geometrical parameters of the Fe19Ni81/Сu/Fe19Ni81 structures are estimated from the viewpoint of obtaining strong magnetic impedance effect and possible application of these structures for detection of bioelements with magnetic markers. Widening of the structures necessary for increasing their active surface area weakens the magnetic impedance effect, and the length increase is limited by the optimal working biodetector frequencies and electromagnetic wave propagation processes. • Nutritional and physicochemical changes in 'Tango' during harvest season is provided. • Growth location and rootstock influence the fruit quality of 'Tango' mandarins. • The trees grafted onto rootstock FA5 displayed higher contents of sugars and acids. • Vitamin C content was higher in the fruit from trees grafted onto FA5. • On the main flavonoids the effect of location was more marked than rootstock. 'Tango' mandarin is becoming one of the most demanded varieties in the Mediterranean Region. However, no information on the quality of 'Tango' fruit in this citrus area has been reported. In this study, the physico-chemical, nutritional and sensorial quality of 'Tango' mandarins grafted onto Carrizo Citrange and FA5 rootstocks from two locations (Sevilla and Huelva) was evaluated by harvest season. The fruit from Sevilla exhibited lower levels of acids and sugars than those from Huelva, which was associated with a higher sandy soil percentage in the Huelva orchard. In both orchards, the FA5-produced fruit had higher sugars and acids. Flavonoids were affected mainly by location, and the Huelva fruit exhibited the highest levels. The highest vitamin C was for the FA5 fruit. The decreased antioxidant capacity observed throughout the harvest season was related to reduced vitamin C. The visible trend in the development of the snack market focuses on the use of innovative technologies such as low-temperature or hybrid processes that allow the preservation of native ingredients of raw plant materials. In addition, the high antioxidant potential of, for example, chokeberry fruit can be used to support technological processes and create new products. The aim of the study was to evaluate the possibility of using chokeberry juice concentrate as a component of an osmotic solution to enrich apple samples with natural bio-ingredients and obtain dried apples with increased content of ingredients with antioxidant properties; pro-healthy apple chips. The research material consisted of apples that underwent osmotic dehydration in solutions of sucrose or sucrose and chokeberry juice concentrate and then were dried by the freeze-drying or the hybrid method. The freeze-drying was more beneficial for maintaining the vitamin C content, while the use of the hybrid method resulted in the preservation of more polyphenolic compounds. The sensory evaluation indicated the need to modify the composition of the osmoactive solution. Due to the use of chokeberry juice concentrate, the content of vitamin C, polyphenols, and the antioxidant activity of dried apples was increased. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
