International audience; On international markets, prices of grains (wheat, maize) and vegetable oils (rapeseed, sunflower, soybean, palm) have been rising since mid-2020. Biofuels play a major part in this increase, and the war in Ukraine, which began in February 2022, has exacerbated it. Biofuels in fact link the price of these commodities to that of crude oil: when the crude oil price rises, the biofuels industry increases its demand for maize and vegetable oils. Temporarily limiting this industrial usage would reduce the price of these commodities. Moreover, in case of an increase in rice prices, one solution would be to authorise Japan to export the rice stock it has built up under World Trade Organization (WTO) rules. In order to prevent future crises, these two levers could be activated as soon as world prices of these agricultural commodities reach predetermined levels.

This study investigates the synergistic behavior between oxidative atmosphere and potassium catalytic effects on woody (Amapaí) and non-woody (Miscanthus) biomass. Inert and oxygen-lean torrefaction was conducted at 275 °C for demineralized and K-loaded samples in fixed-bed and thermo-gravimetric equipment. Torrefaction improvement was assessed by torrefaction severity index (TSI), Catalytic Enhancement Area (CEA), Catalytic index (CI), and conversion rate (CR). Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analyzed the impact on condensable compounds. The K% anticipated the biomass oxidation and the oxidative medium improved the catalytic effect. CEA and CI provided a reliable performance index (R2 > 0.90) to assess the synergistic effect. Condensable compound yields variation with increasing K% was similar for both atmospheres but the K-impact on the compounds production was intensified under oxidative conditions. The furfuryl alcohol yield increased by a factor of 30 for Amapaí comparing higher K% and demineralized samples, whereas a factor of 3 was observed for inert conditions. For Miscanthus, the factors of increasing production were 22 and 5 for oxidative and inert atmosphere. Under oxygen-lean, syringaldehyde and vanillin yields decreased with higher K%, whereas inert treatment revealed insignificant effects. The results indicate that torrefaction duration and targeted condensates production could be improved according to the K% and atmosphere.

Lignocellulosic biomasses have some characteristics that hinder their use as fuel. Further, the biodegradation processes that can occur during storage can affect their energy properties. Torrefaction can improve their energy properties while reducing the impacts of storage. Near-infrared (NIR) spectroscopy could be a promising tool to estimate changes to biomass properties during storage. A series of waste feedstocks, including: sugarcane bagasse, coffee husk, eucalyptus, and pine were torrefied at 290 °C in a screw reactor, over 5, 7.5, 10, 15, or 20 min. Then, raw and torrefied biomasses were submitted to leaching and to white and brown-rot fungi, to simulate storage conditions. The weight loss (WL) due to fungal degradation after 2, 4, 8, and 12 weeks was measured and the high heating value (HHV) of all biodegradation steps, including raw and torrefied samples after leaching, were determined. All the samples were analysed by NIR spectroscopy and chemometric models were then developed. Firstly, partial least squares for discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) models successfully classified the four different residual biomasses into raw and torrefied forms according to fungal decomposition. Secondly, partial least squares regression (PLSR) models showed potential utility in an industrial context as a standardized continuous method to predict the HHV during biomass storage steps. While, PLSR models did not present good accuracy when estimating WL resulting from fungal degradation, they can be useful for screening during decision making. Further studies are required to improve and develop more efficient models to predict the fungal degradation level of stored biomasses. For exemple, in considering the class of torrefied biomasses, the model could show better predictive capacity due to less variability in the data. These results highlight the potential of NIR spectroscopy as a simple, fast, and efficient tool to analyze the degradation process over time. Such a rapid and non-destructive characterization tool could be very useful in industry to assess biomass property changes during storage.

International audience; Sur les marchés internationaux, les prix des céréales (blé, maïs) et des huiles végétales (colza, tournesol, soja, palme) ont augmenté à partir de la mi-2020. Les biocarburants jouent un rôle majeur dans cette hausse et la guerre en Ukraine, qui a débuté en février 2022, l’a exacerbée. Les biocarburants lient en effet le prix de ces denrées à celui du pétrole : lorsque le prix du pétrole augmente, l’industrie des biocarburants accroît sa demande de maïs et d’huiles végétales. Limiter provisoirement cet usage industriel ferait baisser leurs prix. De plus, en cas de hausse du prix du riz, une solution serait d’autoriser le Japon à exporter son stock de riz constitué dans le cadre des règles de l’Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC). Afin de prévenir les crises futures, ces deux leviers pourraient être déclenchés dès que les prix internationaux de ces denrées agricoles atteignent des niveaux prédéfinis.

Background Lignocellulosic biomass is considered as a promising alternative to fossil resources for the production of fuels, materials and chemicals. Efficient enzymatic systems are needed to degrade the plant cell wall and overcome its recalcitrance. A widely used producer of cellulolytic cocktails is the ascomycete Trichoderma reesei, but this organism secretes a limited set of enzymes. To improve the saccharification yields, one strategy is to upgrade the T. reesei enzyme cocktail with enzymes produced by other biomass-degrading filamentous fungi isolated from biodiversity. Results In this study, the enzymatic cocktails secreted by five strains from the genus Aspergillus (Aspergillus japonicus strains BRFM 405, 1487, 1489, 1490 and Aspergillus niger strain BRFM 430) were tested for their ability to boost a T. reesei reference cocktail for the saccharification of pretreated biomass. Proteomic analysis of fungal secretomes that significantly improved biomass degradation showed that the presence of proteins belonging to a putative LPMO family previously identified by genome analysis and awaiting experimental demonstration of activity. Members of this novel LPMO family, named AA16, are encountered in fungi and oomycetes with life styles oriented toward interactions with plant biomass. One AA16 protein from Aspergillus aculeatus (AaAA16) was produced to high level in Pichia pastoris. LPMO-type enzyme activity was demonstrated on cellulose with oxidative cleavage at the C1 position of the glucose unit. AaAA16 LPMO was found to significantly improve the activity of T. reesei CBHI on cellulosic substrates. Conclusions Although Aspergillus spp. has been investigated for decades for their CAZymes diversity, we identified members of a new fungal LPMO family using secretomics and functional assays. Properties of the founding member of the AA16 family characterized herein could be of interest for use in biorefineries. Deux chercheurs du Cirad nous font part ici de leurs réflexions sur le développement de la production de l'huile de palme, en particulier pour une utilisation comme biocarburant. Compte tenu des nombreux débats en cours sur cette question, il nous a paru pertinent de publier ce texte dans la revue afin de stimuler des échanges sur les points qui y sont abordés ou seulement évoqués. Nous retiendrons notamment, en amont, la question de l'usage des terres, en particulier lorsque le déstockage du carbone des sols mis en culture se fait sur de longues périodes. Une autre question importante est celle des effets sur les sociétés concernées, que ce soit les éleveurs exclus, les travailleurs dans les plantations ou les exploitants familiaux qui, au gré des cours mondiaux et des réglementations, doivent prendre des décisions affectant différemment, selon les productions, les immobilisations foncières et les conditions de travail…

International audience; In the world, oil provides 96% of transport needs, which mobilize 65% of the oil consumed and contribute 20% to CO2 emissions. One of the alternatives to reduce the consumption of fossil resources is the use of "biofuels". These biofuels are classified into three successive generations. The first generation biofuels come from the food parts of field crops: bioethanol and biodiesel. Second generation "advanced" biofuels come from lignocellulosic resources (wood, agricultural residues, etc.) valued either as bioethanol or synthetic hydrocarbons. A third generation is based on the culture of micro-algae producing fatty acids transformed into biodiesel. The first generation biodiesels, like those of the second and third generations, are subject to certain criticisms in particular the LUC (Land-Use Change) and the food versus energy competition. The objective of this work is to examine the interest of two promising ways. Biodiesel based on dedicated crops lead to reduced environmental impacts but play a role in the problem of LUC. While those based on residues are not part of the problem and show levels of reduction of greenhouse gas emissions between 83 and 90% against 60 to 80% for a conventional biodiesel compared to a fossil diesel fuel. Butyl esters of used edible oils and animal fats are displayed as "greener" biodiesels and represent an opportunity for second generation biofuels and for a greener oleochemistry.; Dans le monde, le pétrole assure 96% des besoins des transports, lesquels mobilisent 65% dupétrole consommé et participent à hauteur de 20% aux émissions de CO2. Afin de réduire la consommationde ressources fossiles, une des alternatives est notamment l’utilisation de « biocarburants ». Cesbiocarburants sont classés en trois générations successives. Les biocarburants de première génération sontissus des parties alimentaires de plantes de grande culture : le bioéthanol et le biodiesel. Les biocarburantsdits « avancés » de seconde génération sont issus de ressources lignocellulosiques (bois, résidus agricoles...)valorisées soit en bioéthanol soit en hydrocarbures de synthèse. Une troisième génération repose sur la culture de micro-algues productrices d’acides gras transformés en biodiesel. Les biodiesels de première génération, tout comme ceux de deuxième et troisième générations, sont sujets à certaines critiques notamment le CAS (changement d’affectation des sols) et la compétition alimentaire/énergétique. L’objectif de ce travail est d’examiner l’intérêt de deux filières prometteuses. Les biodiesels basés sur des cultures dédiées conduisent à des impacts environnementaux plus réduits mais jouent un rôle dans la problématique des CAS. Alors que celles basées sur les résidus n’y entrent pas et montrent des niveaux de réduction des émissions de gaz à effet de serre entre 83 et 90% contre 60 à 80% pour un biodiesel classique par rapport à un carburant diesel fossile. Les esters butyliques d’huiles alimentaires usagées et de graisses animales s’affichent comme des biodiesels « plus verts » et représentent une opportunité pour les biocarburants de deuxième génération et pour une oléochimie « plus verte ».

Considering that Europe is pursuing a greenhouse gas emissions reduction goal to meet carbon neutrality by 2050 (European Commission, 2018a), it is relevant to question European Biofuel Development policy. This essay presents the evolution of the European Biofuel Development policy and shows the opportunities and limits of the use of waste and residues for advanced biodiesels. In this document, we will first present the European policies made to support 1st generation biodiesels as well as the limits of these biodiesels. Then, we will focus on the environmental, sanitary and socioeconomic interest of using Used Cooking Oils and Animal Fats into advanced biodiesels. We will present the support policies establish. Finally, we will highlight the limits of these advanced biofuels. This essay aims to escort the discussion on the use of biofuels as a lever to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transport sector.; Dans le contexte où l’Europe vise une réduction de ses émissions de gaz à effet de serre et la neutralité carbone à l’horizon 2050, il est pertinent de se questionner sur la politique européenne de soutien aux biocarburants. Ce mémoire présente l’évolution de la politique européenne de soutien ainsi que les opportunités et limites de la valorisation de déchets et de résidus en biodiesels avancés (biodiesels issus de la valorisation de matière ne rentrant pas en compétition avec l’alimentation). Ce document présente dans un premier temps, les politiques européennes de soutien aux biodiesels de 1ère génération ainsi que leurs limites. Dans un deuxième temps, les intérêts environnementaux, sanitaires et sociaux-économiques de la valorisation des Huiles Alimentaires Usagées et des Graisses Animales Fondues en biodiesels avancés sont présentés, ainsi que les politiques de soutien mises en place. Enfin, la dernière partie de ce rapport présente les limites de ces biocarburants avancés. Ce mémoire a pour but d’éclairer la discussion sur l’utilisation de biocarburants comme levier pour diminuer les émissions de gaz à effet de serre dans le secteur des transports.

Although vegetable oils are apparently an advantageous alternative fuel for direct use in traditional diesel engines with no modification necessary, in practice many problems are regularly discussed in the literature including filter clogging, breakage of certain types of injection pumps, and deposits of carbon on the cold parts of engines.Several technological solutions have been proposed to overcome these problems but the majority of papers discuss them individually and have not actually compared them in similar conditions. The purpose of the present study was to use the same experimental device to compare the three most widely recognised technological options for the use of Jatropha curcas vegetable oil as a fuel in a direct injection diesel engine: preheating, blending with diesel, and recirculating exhaust gases. Power output, specific consumption, thermal efficiency and exhaust gas emissions were compared to those of diesel used as the reference. The results obtained were similar for preheated and non-preheated Jatropha oil, but differed from the results obtained with diesel. Similar combustion performance and similar emissions were obtained with a blend of 20% Jatropha oil and diesel to those obtained with diesel alone. Exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) with Jatropha oil could lead to fouling in the combustion chamber. In contrast to widely accepted theory, this study also clearly demonstrates that the viscosity of vegetable oil is not the main cause of poorer combustion quality and, consequently, of deposits in the combustion chamber. Fluid Catalytic Cracking (FCC) gasoline represents one third of the global gasoline pool. In order to meet objectives regarding increased renewable share in transportation fuels, the production of a hybrid bio/fossil fuel by co-refining biomass pyrolysis liquids with crude oil fractions in an oil refinery is an achievable approach. Oxygenated molecules, typical of the bio-feedstock, are present in liquids produced from biomass pyrolysis. Because large lignocellulosic fragments could strongly adsorb on the FCC zeolite surface, they may not access catalytic sites or could diffuse very slowly in the microporous network. Hence, for high oxygenated molecule content, co-refining may lead to severe changes in product quality, such as a higher aromaticity, coke and residual oxygenates in the hybrid fuels that are produced. To adjust the reactivity of FCC catalysts towards bio-oil, four Y zeolites with well controlled hierarchical mesoporous – microporous network have been investigated. They mainly vary by the characteristics of the secondary mesoporous network (pore size, mesoporous volume) while their globally similar acidity displays some changes in nature (Lewis/Brønsted). The impact of hierarchical porous structures combined with changes in acidity is studied on catalytic activity and selectivity (e.g., coke formation). The issue of diffusion limitation in line with acidity changes are discussed based on Zero Length Column (ZLC) measurements, pyridine adsorption measurements, catalytic cracking of n-hexane and co-processing of vacuum gas oil and bio-oil in micro-activity test unit; Le monde fait face à des enjeux climatiques et énergétiques qui impliquent l’utilisation de biomasse, au même titre que d’autres énergies renouvelables, comme des moyens de production d’énergie. Parmi les voies envisagées, l’addition d’huile de pyrolyse au sein de procédés de raffinage déjà existants présenterait l’avantage d’une mise en place rapide et d’une modification structurelle limitée. L’unité de craquage catalytique en lit fluidisé (FCC), valorisant les fractions pétrolières les plus lourdes, est l’unité la plus à même de valoriser des charges biosourcées. Cependant, les premiers tests ont pu révéler la présence de certains freins, tels que l’immiscibilité des charges fossiles et biosourcées, impliquant la mise en place de deux systèmes d’injection indépendants, ou encore une plus forte désactivation des catalyseurs de craquage. Sur ce dernier point, la présence de larges fragments lignocellulosiques, volumineux et riches en oxygène, perturbe le fonctionnement des catalyseurs de FCC. Leur encombrement étant suspecté de limiter leur accès aux sites acides, responsables du craquage catalytique, l’addition de mésopores aux cristaux de zéolites microporeux est une voie de recherche intéressante. Parallèlement à cela, la préparation de matériaux à porosité hiérarchisée, c’est-à-dire alliant l’agencement de plusieurs niveaux de porosité, se développe depuis quelques années. Ces matériaux rentrent parfaitement dans le cadre de l’amélioration de l’accessibilité aux sites acides. Ces travaux de thèse visent ainsi à définir l’impact que peut avoir un processus de hiérarchisation de la porosité sur le craquage catalytique d’un mélange de charges pétrolières fossiles avec une huile de pyrolyse de biomasse. Dans cette optique, une zéolite Y - couramment utilisée pour le craquage catalytique - a été hiérarchisée conformément aux protocoles déjà disponibles dans la littérature. Les caractéristiques structurelles de quatre matériaux ont ensuite été définies, aidant ainsi à la compréhension d’études du transfert diffusionnel, du craquage de molécules modèles et du craquage de charges réelles réalisées par la suite et présentées dans ce manuscrit de thèse

Global progress all over the world requires a variety of clean energy sources. Liquid ester-based biofuels seem to be very effective in this context since they are easy to use in modern vehicles, they can be produced from a variety of renewable resources, and they provide environmentally friendly combustion characteristics. In this regard, fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs) are considered as a promising class of biofuels. The main goal of this thesis was to develop an updated chemical kinetic mechanism of combustion of light FAEEs up to ethyl pentanoate and validate it against the new experimental data on chemical speciation in low and atmospheric pressure premixed laminar flames. The flames fueled by three FAEEs, ethyl acetate, ethyl butanoate and ethyl pentanoate, were investigated by means of molecular-beam mass-spectrometry and gas-chromatography. More than 40 stable and intermediate species including radicals were detected and quantified in the flames. A comprehensive analysis of the developed mechanism was performed. The thesis consists of 3 chapters. In the first chapter a review of literature is presented. The most important experimental and theoretic studies on FAEEs are discussed. The second chapter presents an overview of experimental and simulation methods used in the work. Details on the mechanism development are also provided in this part. The last chapter present experimental and modeling results on the esters studied in comparison with the literature kinetic mechanisms., Le progrès partout dans le monde nécessite une variété de sources d'énergie propre. Les biocarburants liquides de type ester semblent être très efficaces dans ce contexte, car ils sont faciles à utiliser dans les véhicules modernes, ils peuvent être produits à partir de diverses ressources renouvelables et ils offrent des caractéristiques de combustion respectueuses de l'environnement. À cet égard, les esters éthyliques d'acides gras (EEAG) sont considérés comme une classe prometteuse de biocarburants. L'objectif principal de cette thèse était de développer un mécanisme cinétique chimique actualisé de la combustion des EEAG légers jusqu'au pentanoate d'éthyle et de le valider par rapport aux nouvelles données expérimentales sur la structure de flammes laminaires prémélangées à basse pression et pression atmosphérique. Les flammes alimentées par trois EEAG, l'acétate d'éthyle, le butanoate d'éthyle et le pentanoate d'éthyle, ont été étudiées au moyen de la spectrométrie de masse avec faisceau moléculaire et de la chromatographie en phase gazeuse. Plus de 40 espèces stables et intermédiaires comprenant des radicaux ont été détectées et quantifiées dans les flammes. Une analyse complète du mécanisme développé a été réalisée. La thèse se compose de 3 chapitres. Le premier chapitre présente une revue bibliographique. Les études expérimentales et théoriques les plus importantes sur la combustion des EEAG sont discutées. Le deuxième chapitre présente un aperçu des méthodes expérimentales et de simulation utilisées dans la thèse. Des détails sur le développement du mécanisme sont également fournis dans cette partie. Le dernier chapitre présente des résultats expérimentaux et de modélisation sur les esters étudiés en comparaison avec les mécanismes cinétiques de la littérature.

Clostridium acetobutylicum has received renewed interest worldwide as a promising producer of biofuels and bulk chemicals such as n-butanol, 1,3-propanediol, 1,3-butanediol, isopropanol, and butyrate. To develop commercial processes for the production of bulk chemicals via a metabolic engineering approach it is necessary to better characterize both the primary metabolism and metabolic regulation of C. acetobutylicum. Here, we review the history of the development of omics studies of C. acetobutylicum, summarize the recent application of quantitative/integrated omics approaches to the physiological analysis and metabolic engineering of this bacterium, and provide directions for future studies to address current challenges.

Agroecological studies on sugarcane dealing with genotype by environment by management interactions commonly generate complex datasets. To facilitate the use of these datasets, a relational database, named ECOFI, was designed from the analysis of the content and the structure datasets of multidisciplinary experiments with sugarcane and energy cane. The database described in this paper includes data from 58 trials carried out in 11 countries from 1986 to 2016, including 24 trials in Reunion Islands and 15 in Guadeloupe. Taking into account plots within the trials and crop cycle, it includes 725 crop cycles in total, with 60 different cultivars. The datasets contain data for crop observations (e.g. dry mass), soil (water contents), weather (all essential meteorological parameters) and management (sowing, cultivars and harvest). Additionally the datasets contain metadata to qualify observations. This dataset provides an adequate experimental set to calibrate or validate crop model simulations under genotype x environment interaction.
