Central Auditory Processing Disorder (CAPD) refers to various dysfunctions that occur in the central auditory nervous system during the processing of auditory information even though the person has normal hearing thresholds. Dysfunctions, perception of temporal aspects of sound in general; occurs during the tasks of decoding the frequency and intensity of sounds, processing information from both ears, separating speech from background noise, capturing temporal sequence in verbal information flow, and coping with temporal masking effects. These difficulties in processing sound in the central auditory system lead to inability to answer questions appropriately, following conversation and directions, poor auditory memory, poor reading and writing skills, inability to organize events in the mind, and communicative-psychosocial problems. The diagnosis of CAPD remains a difficult and controversial issue, as it has common symptoms with other developmental or learning-related disorders and the assessment methods are generally subjective. However, in recent years, the number of studies that emphasize more on the treatment/therapy approaches recommended for CAPD and show the positive effects of the applied approaches with both objective and subjective test methods has been increasing. The aim of this study is to review the literature on individual therapy interventions in which "methods to improve auditory skills or auditory training", which is one of the recommended approaches for the treatment and management of CAPD. Formal therapy studies recommended for the improvement of auditory skills, including children who were reported to have been diagnosed with CAPD, regardless of the criteria used for diagnosis in the literature regarding the diagnosis of CAPD, are included in the scope of this review. As a result, it is thought that spreading the use of "auditory training" approaches in clinics by establishing standards is important in the intervention of patients with CAPD. Albert (Al) S. Feng (1944 − 1921) was a pioneer in the area of neuroethology of auditory systems. This special issue of the Journal of Comparative Physiology A commemorates his life and work by presenting 15 articles written by friends, students, and colleagues, many of whom have become leading experts themselves in this field. Their contributions not only provide a comprehensive overview of bioacoustics in amphibians and mammals (including bats), but also are intended to inspire a new generation of scientists to advance our understanding of brain mechanisms of acoustic perception. The primary objective of this experiment was to measure the temporal and spatial processing capabilities of older individuals and use statistical models to identify the individual contributions of these temporal and spatial processing capabilities to spatial release from masking (SRM). Repeated measures Twenty-five older listeners with varying degrees of hearing loss participated in this experiment. SRM using the coordinate response measure, gap detection thresholds and localisation acuity for 1/3-octave-wide Gaussian noise bands centred at 500 and 4000 Hz were measured for all the listeners. Older listeners had better speech recognition thresholds when target and maskers were spatially separated as compared to when they were co-located. In addition, hearing loss and localisation acuity at 500 Hz were significant predictors in a multiple regression model predicting SRM. However, gap detection thresholds did not significantly contribute to the multiple regression model predicting SRM. Based on our data, we conclude that SRM at 30° spatial separation between the target and symmetric maskers is driven by the ability of the individuals to use interaural time difference cues. Speech comprehension in noisy environments depends on central auditory functions, which are vulnerable in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Binaural processing exploits two ear sounds to optimally process degraded sound information; its characteristics are poorly understood in AD. We studied behavioral and electrophysiological alterations in binaural processing among 121 participants (AD = 27; amnestic mild cognitive impairment [aMCI] = 33; subjective cognitive decline [SCD] = 30; cognitively normal [CN] = 31). We observed impairment of binaural processing in AD and aMCI, and detected a U‐shaped curve change in phase synchrony (declining from CN to SCD and to aMCI, but increasing from aMCI to AD). This improvement in phase synchrony accompanying more severe cognitive stages could reflect neural adaptation for binaural processing. Moreover, increased phase synchrony is associated with worse memory during the stages when neural adaptation apparently occurs. These findings support a hypothesis that neural adaptation for binaural processing deficit may exacerbate cognitive impairment, which could help identify biomarkers and therapeutic targets in AD. However, after hearing onset, how the processing of binaural cues by AI neurons develops, and how the binaural processing of AI neurons is affected by reversible unilateral conductive hearing loss (RUCHL), are not fully elucidated. Here, we determined the binaural processing of AI neurons in four groups of rats: postnatal day (P) 14–18 rats, P19–30 rats, P57–70 adult rats, and RUCHL rats (P57–70) with RUCHL during P14–30. We recorded the responses of AI neurons to both monaural and binaural stimuli with variations in interaural level differences (ILDs) and average binaural levels. We found that the monaural response types, the binaural interaction types, and the distributions of the best ILDs of AI neurons in P14–18 rats are already adult-like. However, after hearing onset, there exist developmental refinements in the binaural processing of AI neurons, which are exhibited by the increase in the degree of binaural interaction, and the increase in the sensitivity and selectivity to ILDs. RUCHL during early hearing development affects monaural response types, decreases the degree of binaural interactions, and decreases both the selectivity and sensitivity to ILDs of AI neurons in adulthood. These new evidences help us to understand the refinements and plasticity in the binaural processing of AI neurons during hearing development, and might enhance our understanding in the neuronal mechanism of developmental changes in auditory spatial perception. Humans make use of small differences in the timing of sounds at the two ears—interaural time differences (ITDs)—to locate their sources. Despite extensive investigation, however, the neural representation of ITDs in the human brain is contentious, particularly the range of ITDs explicitly represented by dedicated neural detectors. Here, using magneto- and electro-encephalography (MEG and EEG), we demonstrate evidence of a sparse neural representation of ITDs in the human cortex. The magnitude of cortical activity to sounds presented via insert earphones oscillated as a function of increasing ITD—within and beyond auditory cortical regions—and listeners rated the perceptual quality of these sounds according to the same oscillating pattern. This pattern was accurately described by a population of model neurons with preferred ITDs constrained to the narrow, sound-frequency-dependent range evident in other mammalian species. When scaled for head size, the distribution of ITD detectors in the human cortex is remarkably like that recorded in vivo from the cortex of rhesus monkeys, another large primate that uses ITDs for source localization. The equalization cancellation model is often used to predict the binaural masking level difference. Previously its application to speech in noise has required separate knowledge about the speech and noise signals to maximize the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here, a novel, blind equalization cancellation model is introduced that can use the mixed signals. This approach does not require any assumptions about particular sound source directions. It uses different strategies for positive and negative SNRs, with the switching between the two steered by a blind decision stage utilizing modulation cues. The output of the model is a single-channel signal with enhanced SNR, which we analyzed using the speech intelligibility index to compare speech intelligibility predictions. In a first experiment, the model was tested on experimental data obtained in a scenario with spatially separated target and masker signals. Predicted speech recognition thresholds were in good agreement with measured speech recognition thresholds with a root mean square error less than 1 dB. A second experiment investigated signals at positive SNRs, which was achieved using time compressed and low-pass filtered speech. The results demonstrated that binaural unmasking of speech occurs at positive SNRs and that the modulation-based switching strategy can predict the experimental results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Binaural processing, particularly the processing of interaural phase differences, is important for sound localization and speech understanding in background noise. Age has been shown to impact the neural encoding and perception of these binaural temporal cues even in individuals with clinically normal hearing sensitivity. This work used a new electrophysiological response, called the interaural phase modulation-following response (IPM-FR), to examine the effects of age on the neural encoding of interaural phase difference cues. Relationships between neural recordings and performance on several behavioral measures of binaural processing were used to determine whether the IPM-FR is predictive of interaural phase difference sensitivity and functional speech understanding deficits. Behavioral binaural frequency modulation detection thresholds were measured to assess sensitivity to interaural phase differences while spatial release-from-masking thresholds were used to assess speech understanding abilities in spatialized noise. Thirty adults between the ages of 35 to 74 years with normal low-frequency hearing thresholds were used in this study. Data showed that older participants had weaker neural responses to the interaural phase difference cue and were less able to take advantage of binaural cues for speech understanding compared to younger participants. Results also showed that the IPM-FR was predictive of performance on the binaural frequency modulation detection task, but not on the spatial release-from-masking task after accounting the effects of age. These results confirm previous work that showed that the IPM-FR reflects age-related declines in binaural temporal processing and provide further evidence that this response may represent a useful objective tool for assessing binaural function. However, further research is needed to understand how the IPM-FR is related to speech understanding abilities.

In this paper, a mobile sound localization setup is described that can be used to measure a persons’ localization performance in a sophisticated way. With this mobile setup, researchers can travel to subjects, and studies are not limited by the willingness of participants to visit the clinic. In the setup, sounds are presented within a partial sphere in both the horizontal (−70° to 70° azimuth) and vertical (−35° to 40° elevation) plane. Participants are asked to indicate the perceived sound origin by pointing with a head-mounted LED. Head movements are recorded and instantly visualized (i.e. online target response plots). Depending on the research question, the setup can be adjusted for more advanced or simplified measurements, making the setup suitable for a wide range of research questions. The rationale for building this mobile setup was to test horizontal sound localization abilities (binaural hearing) and vertical sound localization abilities (monaural hearing) of children and patients who were otherwise not accessible for testing. In this setup loudspeakers are not visible and subjects are asked to indicate the perceived sound direction by a natural head-pointing response towards the perceived location. An advantage of the implemented pointing-method is the playful manner in which children are tested. They are ‘shooting’ at the perceived sound target location with a head-mounted LED and have fun while performing the test. • We present a mobile sound localization setup suitable for measuring horizontal and vertical sound localization in children and adult patients in the convenience of their own environment.

We reanalyzed a study that investigated binaural and temporal integration of speech reflections with different amplitudes, delays, and interaural phase differences. We used a blind binaural speech intelligibility model (bBSIM), applying an equalization-cancellation process for modeling binaural release from masking. bBSIM is blind, as it requires only the mixed binaural speech and noise signals and no auxiliary information about the listening conditions. bBSIM was combined with two non-blind back-ends: The speech intelligibility index (SII) and the speech transmission index (STI) resulting in hybrid-models. Furthermore, bBSIM was combined with the non-intrusive short-time objective intelligibility (NI-STOI) resulting in a fully blind model. The fully non-blind reference model used in the previous study achieved the best prediction accuracy (R2 = 0.91 and RMSE = 1 dB). The fully blind model yielded a coefficient of determination (R2 = 0.87) similar to that of the reference model but also the highest root mean square error of the models tested in this study (RMSE = 4.4 dB). By adjusting the binaural processing errors of bBSIM as done in the reference model, the RMSE could be decreased to 1.9 dB. Furthermore, in this study, the dynamic range of the SII had to be adjusted to predict the low SRTs of the speech material used.

The purpose of this study was to measure the binaural interaction component (BIC) derived from click-evoked auditory brainstem responses (ABRs) using stimuli configured to elicit the Precedence Effect. The hypothesis was that the contribution of binaural processing to echo suppression can be evidenced by a diminished or absent BIC associated with the echo. Ten normal-hearing young adults provided ABRs generated by sequences of click pairs. Results showed that BICs elicited by diotic clicks in isolation were obliterated when those diotic clicks were preceded by a click pair having an interaural time difference of 400 µs and where the interclick interval was 8.4 ms. The presence of the leading click pair increased the latency of the ABR generated by the lagging diotic click pair but did not decrease its amplitude. The results were interpreted as indicating a contribution of binaural processing at the level of the brainstem to echo suppression, at least for the conditions tested here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many users of bilateral cochlear implants (BiCIs) localize sound sources less accurately than do people with normal hearing. This may be partly due to using two independently functioning CIs with fixed compression, which distorts and/or reduces interaural level differences (ILDs). Here, we investigate the potential benefits of using binaurally coupled, dynamic compression inspired by the medial olivocochlear reflex; an approach termed "the MOC strategy" (Lopez-Poveda et al., 2016, Ear Hear 37:e138-e148). Twelve BiCI users were asked to localize wideband (125–6000 Hz) noise tokens in a virtual horizontal plane. Stimuli were processed through a standard (STD) sound processing strategy (i.e., involving two independently functioning sound processors with fixed compression) and three different implementations of the MOC strategy: one with fast (MOC1) and two with slower contralateral control of compression (MOC2 and MOC3). The MOC1 and MOC2 strategies had effectively greater inhibition in the higher than in the lower frequency channels, while the MOC3 strategy had slightly greater inhibition in the lower than in the higher frequency channels. Localization was most accurate with the MOC1 strategy, presumably because it provided the largest and less ambiguous ILDs. The angle error improved slightly from 25.3° with the STD strategy to 22.7° with the MOC1 strategy. The improvement in localization ability over the STD strategy disappeared when the contralateral control of compression was made slower, presumably because stimuli were too short (200 ms) for the slower contralateral inhibition to enhance ILDs. Results suggest that some MOC implementations hold promise for improving not only speech-in-noise intelligibility, as shown elsewhere, but also sound source lateralization. • Sound lateralization for bilateral cochlear-implant users was tested using virtual acoustics. • Binaural sound coding inspired by the medial olivocochlear reflex can enhance inter-aural level differences. • The use of binaurally coupled compression can improve sound lateralization. Background: Musical perception requires a host of skills. Instrumental musicians place greater emphasis on motor coordination, whereas vocal musicians rehearse vocal sounds. The study explored the differential advantages of musical background on binaural integration and interaction in musicians (instrumentalists, vocalists) and compared them with age-matched non-musicians., Methods: Eight six participants aged 20-40 y with normal hearing sensitivity were subjected to binaural tests using a standard group comparison research design. The participants were segregated into three groups - Group 1 included instrumentalists (n = 26, mean age: 17.73 ± 2.83 y), while Group 2 and Group 3 consisted of vocalists (n = 30, mean age: 19.30 ± 2.47 y) and non-musicians (n = 30, mean age: 18.20 ± 3.02 y) respectively. The binaural processes namely integration (Dichotic syllable test, DST; and virtual acoustic space identification - VASI) and interaction (Interaural difference thresholds for time and level: ITD & ILD), were administered on all the participants., Results: Statistical analyses showed the main effect of musicianship. Bonferroni pair-wise test revealed that the musicians (instrumentalists and vocalists) outperformed ( p  < 0.05) non-musicians in all the tests. The differential advantage of the musical background was seen on the binaural integration test with instrumentalists performing better in the VASI test compared to vocalists, and vice-versa for DST. So-called duplex speech stimuli with perceptually ambiguous spectral cues to one ear and isolated low- versus high-frequency third formant "chirp" to the opposite ear yield a coherent percept supporting their phonetic categorization. Critically, such dichotic sounds are only perceived categorically upon binaural integration. Here, we used frequency-following responses (FFRs), scalp-recorded potentials reflecting phase-locked subcortical activity, to investigate brainstem responses to fused speech percepts and to determine whether FFRs reflect binaurally integrated category-level representations. We recorded FFRs to diotic and dichotic stop-consonants (/da/, /ga/) that either did or did not require binaural fusion to properly label along with perceptually ambiguous sounds without clear phonetic identity. Behaviorally, listeners showed clear categorization of dichotic speech tokens confirming they were heard with a fused, phonetic percept. Neurally, we found FFRs were stronger for categorically perceived speech relative to category-ambiguous tokens but also differentiated phonetic categories for both diotically and dichotically presented speech sounds. Correlations between neural and behavioral data further showed FFR latency predicted the degree to which listeners labeled tokens as "da" versus "ga." The presence of binaurally integrated, category-level information in FFRs suggests human brainstem processing reflects a surprisingly abstract level of the speech code typically circumscribed to much later cortical processing., (© The Author(s) 2023. Abstract: The auditory processing atypicalities experienced by many individuals on the autism spectrum disorder might be understood in terms of difficulties parsing the sound energy arriving at the ears into discrete auditory ‘objects’. Here, we asked whether autistic adults are able to make use of two important spatial cues to auditory object formation – the relative timing and amplitude of sound energy at the left and right ears. Using electroencephalography, we measured the brain responses of 15 autistic adults and 15 age‐ and verbal‐IQ‐matched control participants as they listened to dichotic pitch stimuli – white noise stimuli in which interaural timing or amplitude differences applied to a narrow frequency band of noise typically lead to the perception of a pitch sound that is spatially segregated from the noise. Responses were contrasted with those to stimuli in which timing and amplitude cues were removed. Consistent with our previous studies, autistic adults failed to show a significant object‐related negativity (ORN) for timing‐based pitch, although their ORN was not significantly smaller than that of the control group. Autistic participants did show an ORN to amplitude cues, indicating that they do not experience a general impairment in auditory object formation. However, their P400 response – thought to indicate the later attention‐dependent aspects of auditory object formation – was missing. These findings provide further evidence of atypical auditory object processing in autism with potential implications for understanding the perceptual and communication difficulties associated with the condition. Auditory research has a rich history of combining experimental evidence with computational simulations of auditory processing in order to deepen our theoretical understanding of how sound is processed in the ears and in the brain. Despite significant progress in the amount of detail and breadth covered by auditory models, for many components of the auditory pathway there are still different model approaches that are often not equivalent but rather in conflict with each other. Similarly, some experimental studies yield conflicting results which has led to controversies. This can be best resolved by a systematic comparison of multiple experimental data sets and model approaches. Binaural processing is a prominent example of how the development of quantitative theories can advance our understanding of the phenomena, but there remain several unresolved questions for which competing model approaches exist. This article discusses a number of current unresolved or disputed issues in binaural modelling, as well as some of the significant challenges in comparing binaural models with each other and with the experimental data. We introduce an auditory model framework, which we believe can become a useful infrastructure for resolving some of the current controversies. It operates models over the same paradigms that are used experimentally. The core of the proposed framework is an interface that connects three components irrespective of their underlying programming language: The experiment software, an auditory pathway model, and task-dependent decision stages called artificial observers that provide the same output format as the test subject. The inferior colliculus (IC) is the common target of separate pathways that transmit different types of auditory information. Beyond tonotopy, little is known about the organization of response properties within the 3-dimensional layout of the auditory midbrain in most species. Through study of interaural time difference (ITD) processing, the functional properties of neurons can be readily characterized and related to specific pathways. To characterize the representation of ITDs relative to the frequency and hodological organization of the IC, the properties of neurons were recorded and the sites recovered histologically. Subdivisions of the IC were identified based on cytochrome oxidase (CO) histochemistry. The results were plotted within a framework formed by an MRI atlas of the gerbil brain. The central nucleus was composed of two parts, and lateral and dorsal cortical areas were identified. The lateral part of the central nucleus had the highest CO activity in the IC and a high proportion of neurons sensitive to ITDs. The medial portion had lower CO activity and fewer ITD-sensitive neurons. A common tonotopy with a dorsolateral to ventromedial gradient of low to high frequencies spanned the two regions. The distribution of physiological responses was in close agreement with known patterns of ascending inputs. An understanding of the 3-dimensional organization of the IC is needed to specify how the single tonotopic representation in the IC central nucleus leads to the multiple tonotopic representations in core areas of the auditory cortex. We have recently proposed a binaural cochlear implant (CI) sound processing strategy inspired by the contralateral medial olivocochlear reflex (the MOC strategy) and shown that it improves intelligibility in steady-state noise (Lopez-Poveda et al., 2016, Ear Hear 37:e138-e148). The aim here was to evaluate possible speech-reception benefits of the MOC strategy for speech maskers, a more natural type of interferer. Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) were measured in six bilateral and two single-sided deaf CI users with the MOC strategy and with a standard (STD) strategy. SRTs were measured in unilateral and bilateral listening conditions, and for target and masker stimuli located at azimuthal angles of (0°, 0°), (−15°, +15°), and (−90°, +90°). Mean SRTs were 2–5 dB better with the MOC than with the STD strategy for spatially separated target and masker sources. For bilateral CI users, the MOC strategy (1) facilitated the intelligibility of speech in competition with spatially separated speech maskers in both unilateral and bilateral listening conditions; and (2) led to an overall improvement in spatial release from masking in the two listening conditions. Insofar as speech is a more natural type of interferer than steady-state noise, the present results suggest that the MOC strategy holds potential for promising outcomes for CI users. Objectives: To explore the possible effects of recurrent otitis media (ROM) in early childhood on binaural processing and verbal memory in school-aged children. Methods: Two hundred eleven children, including 31 children with and 180 children without a history of ROM, were examined. A dichotic digit test (DDT) and a forward and backward digit memory span test (DMST) were administered. Results: A significant difference was observed between age groups among ROM-free children. The ROM-positive group earned significantly poorer results than the ROM-free group in all measurements, except for the right DDT (rDDT) score. Furthermore, a significant correlation was found between the DDT and EA scores with both DMST scores in the ROM-free group. The correlation between the rDDT and forward DMST scores was not significant in the ROM-positive group, and no significant correlation was observed between the EA score and either DMST score. Conclusions: Our findings support that a history of OM in early childhood based on a parental survey of children is associated with differences in DDT and DMST outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The auditory brainstem response (ABR) is an evoked potential that reflects the responses to sound by brainstem neural centers. The binaural interaction component (BIC) is obtained by subtracting the sum of the monaural ABR responses from the binaural response. Its latency and amplitude change in response to variations in binaural cues. The BIC is thus thought to reflect the activity of binaural nuclei and is used to non-invasively test binaural processing. However, any conclusions are limited by a lack of knowledge of the relevant processes at the level of individual neurons. The aim of this study was to characterize the ABR and BIC in the barn owl, an animal where the ITD-processing neural circuits are known in great detail. We recorded ABR responses to chirps and to 1 and 4 kHz tones from anesthetized barn owls. General characteristics of the barn owl ABR were similar to those observed in other bird species. The most prominent peak of the BIC was associated with nucleus laminaris and is thus likely to reflect the known processes of ITD computation in this nucleus. However, the properties of the BIC were very similar to previously published mammalian data and did not reveal any specific diagnostic features. For example, the polarity of the BIC was negative, which indicates a smaller response to binaural stimulation than predicted by the sum of monaural responses. This is contrary to previous predictions for an excitatory-excitatory system such as nucleus laminaris. Similarly, the change in BIC latency with varying ITD was not distinguishable from mammalian data. Contrary to previous predictions, this behavior appears unrelated to the known underlying neural delay-line circuitry. In conclusion, the generation of the BIC is currently inadequately understood and common assumptions about the BIC need to be reconsidered when interpreting such measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper proposes a method for binaural reconstruction of a sound scene captured with a portable-sized array consisting of several microphones. The proposed processing is separating the scene into a sum of small number of sources, and the spectrogram of each of them is in turn represented as a small number of latent components. The direction of arrival (DOA) of each source is estimated, which is followed by binaural rendering of each source at its estimated direction. For representing the sources, the proposed method uses low-rank complex-valued non-negative matrix factorization combined with DOA-based spatial covariance matrix model. The binaural reconstruction is achieved by applying the binaural cues (head-related transfer function) associated with the estimated source DOA to the separated source signals. The binaural rendering quality of the proposed method was evaluated using a speech intelligibility test. The test results indicated that the proposed binaural rendering was able to improve the intelligibility of speech over stereo recordings and separation by minimum variance distortionless response beamformer with the same binaural synthesis in a three-speaker scenario. An additional listening test evaluating the subjective quality of the rendered output indicates no added processing artifacts by the proposed method in comparison to unprocessed stereo recording. Auditory Scene Analysis provides a useful framework for understanding atypical auditory perception in autism. Specifically, a failure to segregate the incoming acoustic energy into distinct auditory objects might explain the aversive reaction autistic individuals have to certain auditory stimuli or environments. Previous research with non-autistic participants has demonstrated the presence of an Object Related Negativity (ORN) in the auditory event related potential that indexes pre-attentive processes associated with auditory scene analysis. Also evident is a later P400 component that is attention dependent and thought to be related to decision-making about auditory objects. We sought to determine whether there are differences between individuals with and without autism in the levels of processing indexed by these components. Electroencephalography (EEG) was used to measure brain responses from a group of 16 autistic adults, and 16 age- and verbal-IQ-matched typically-developing adults. Auditory responses were elicited using lateralized dichotic pitch stimuli in which inter-aural timing differences create the illusory perception of a pitch that is spatially separated from a carrier noise stimulus. As in previous studies, control participants produced an ORN in response to the pitch stimuli. However, this component was significantly reduced in the participants with autism. In contrast, processing differences were not observed between the groups at the attention-dependent level (P400). These findings suggest that autistic individuals have difficulty segregating auditory stimuli into distinct auditory objects, and that this difficulty arises at an early pre-attentive level of processing.

There has been continued interest in clinical objective measures of binaural processing. One commonly proposed measure is the binaural interaction component (BIC), which is obtained typically by recording auditory brainstem responses (ABRs)--the BIC reflects the difference between the binaural ABR and the sum of the monaural ABRs (i.e., binaural-(left+right)). We have recently developed an alternative, direct measure of sensitivity to interaural time differences, namely, a following response to modulations in interaural phase difference (the interaural phase modulation following response; IPM-FR). To obtain this measure, an ongoing diotically amplitude-modulated signal is presented, and the interaural phase difference of the carrier is switched periodically at minima in the modulation cycle. Such periodic modulations to interaural phase difference can evoke a steady state following response. BIC and IPM-FR measurements were compared from 10 normal-hearing subjects using a 16-channel electroencephalographic system. Both ABRs and IPM-FRs were observed most clearly from similar electrode locations--differential recordings taken from electrodes near the ear (e.g., mastoid) in reference to a vertex electrode (Cz). Although all subjects displayed clear ABRs, the BIC was not reliably observed. In contrast, the IPM-FR typically elicited a robust and significant response. In addition, the IPM-FR measure required a considerably shorter recording session. As the IPM-FR magnitude varied with interaural phase difference modulation depth, it could potentially serve as a correlate of perceptual salience. Emotion recognition from sound signals represents an emerging field of recent research. Although many existing works focus on emotion recognition from music, there seems to be a relative scarcity of research on emotion recognition from general sounds. One of the key characteristics of sound events is the sound source spatial position, i.e. the location of the source relatively to the acoustic receiver. Existing studies that aim to investigate the relation of the latter source placement and the elicited emotions are limited to distance, front and back spatial localization and/or specific emotional categories. In this paper we analytically investigate the effect of the source angular position on the listener’s emotional state, modeled in the well-established valence/arousal affective space. Towards this aim, we have developed an annotated sound events dataset using binaural processed versions of the available International Affective Digitized Sound (IADS) sound events library. All subjective affective annotations were obtained using the Self Assessment Manikin (SAM) approach. Preliminary results obtained by processing these annotation scores are likely to indicate a systematic change in the listener affective state as the sound source angular position changes.
