- Abstract
Producción Científica, One of the defining properties of second language (L2) acquisition is crosslinguistic influence, which can be broadly defined as the influence that occurs between the two languages of the bilingual (e.g., Ringbom, 2007, 2016; Blom & Baayan, 2012; Montrul & Ionin, 2012; Gathercole, 2016; Unsworth, 2016; Llinás-Grau & Bel, 2019). In this study, we of-fer a characterization of crosslinguistic influence in the L2 English pro-duction of a group of sequential bilinguals that have Chinese as their first language (L1). In particular, we explore this language contact si-tuation between Chinese and English in the domain of direct objects, given that the production–omission of direct objects is regulated diffe-rently in these two languages., The Confucius Institute, Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades de España y el FEDER (grant numbers PGC2018-097693-B-I00; RED2022-134920-T), Junta de Castilla y León y la Comisión Social Europea (grant number EDU/556/2019, 5 junio)

An investigation was conducted to determine the degree of correlation between linguistic identity and linguistic attitudes of students at the National University of Altiplano of Puno, Peru. The method used was the Likert scale, which allowed the collection of opinions of Academic Semester 2018 - II bilingual university students from the professional schools of sociology, anthropology, tourism, social communication sciences and art. The Pearson's correlation coefficient was 0.551, and the p-value (0.000) was less than the significance level (0.05). The results show that there is a moderate positive correlation between linguistic identity and linguistic attitudes of the students. 50% of students admit that they always demonstrate linguistic identity, and most students agree that they have a positive attitude toward their native language. It is concluded that there is a moderate positive correlation between linguistic identity and linguistic attitudes of students of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the National University of Altiplano, Puno, at a level of 95% confidence in statistical terms. The issue of bilingual phonological access remains unclear for bilinguals with cross-script language systems, which is especially true when the time course of phonological activation is involved. To investigate the time course of cross-script phonological activation, the present study asked Chinese-English bilinguals to complete a word naming task that was conducted in a forward-masked phonological priming paradigm in three stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) conditions. By comparing the interlingual and intralingual phonological priming effects in a within-subjects design, we found that (a) target naming in Chinese and English was facilitated by a phonologically similar English or Chinese prime in the three SOA conditions (43 ms, 75 ms, and 150 ms) and the facilitation effect of the prime reached the peak when the pronunciation of the prime--target pair most resembled each other and (b) manipulation of the SOAs affected both the naming latencies of target words and the sizes of the phonological priming effect. In particular, naming latencies in each prime--target type displayed an increasing tendency as the SOA prolonged. Moreover, despite the varied sizes of the priming effect in the three SOA conditions, we found a consistent pattern that the priming effects in two interlingual conditions resembled their respective intralingual conditions along the time course. Taken together, these findings provide strong support for an integrated phonological representation of bilinguals and further extend the language nonselective access hypothesis to language pairs with very different orthographic systems. Implications for the manipulation of the SOAs in the masked priming paradigm are also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Two experiments examined meaning (re)activation of English idiomatic expressions by Spanish-dominant, English-dominant and balanced bilinguals. Participants listened to idiomatic expressions of the type I always 3*miss the boat1* when it comes to jokes, and that2* makes itnearly4* impossible to attend comedy shows, and made lexical decisions to visually presented targets that were related literally (water), figuratively (fail) or unrelated to the critical idiomatic expression. In Experiment 1, we measured meaning activation immediately at idiom offset (probe 1*) and after an anaphoric referential description (e.g., that; probe 2*). Probe 2 was intended to further examine whether an anaphoric referential description was more likely to (re)activate its antecedent figurative interpretation that could be more pragmatically plausible than its literal representation. In Experiment 2, targets were presented at idiom onset and 300 ms after anaphor offset. Results revealed that idiom meaning (re)activation was modulated by language dominance, where English-dominant and balanced bilinguals had faster and more accurate responses than Spanish-dominant bilinguals. This study aimed at the analysis of syntactic errors in translation done by both bilingual and monolingual EFL learners. Research on the subject of the study implied that there might be differences between monolinguals and bilingual learners of foreign languages. The gaps of studies on differences between monolinguals and bilingual’s translations from Persian into English language presumed as research question of the study. Through a quantitative and experimental analysis, the researcher collected data from two universities of IAU of South Tehran (monolingual) and Jihad University of Kermanshah (bilingual) using students majoring in translation studies. The OPT test was applied to specify eligible students for the study and then a Persian literary text was offered to students to measure their syntactic errors as introduced by Keshavarz’s (1996) model of error analysis. From 100 participants 36 monolinguals and 24 bilinguals were eligible for the study whose translations were scored by the two raters. The results of the study indicated that there is a significant difference between the scores of monolingual and bilingual translators. In addition, the rate of literal errors and approximation was more than other errors that were reported as the result of language learning strategies and communicative strategies. However, new studies are suggested to investigate the types of errors made by monolinguals and bilinguals and graduate students with advanced level of language learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

DOMINANT language , *LANGUAGE policy , *ISLANDS , *KEYWORDS ,DEVELOPING countries - Abstract
Despite their small size, in both area and population, many different languages are spoken by residents of the small island developing states (SIDS). Most of these languages are used by very few people. With one exception, the remaining forty-nine SIDS have one or more official languages. Slightly over 62 percent of the eighty official languages are those of former colonial rulers. Of the total of 1,500 languages, the Weaver's minimum positive deviation method identified only 106 as dominant languages. These languages are spoken by more than 96 percent of the population in the SIDS. The data further show that twenty-eight of the fifty SIDS are monolingual and the remaining twenty-two are either bilingual or multilingual. Surprisingly, in many monolingual SIDS, the official language is not the dominant language. The dominant languages of these nations were first categorized as monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual and then were analyzed by their location, area, and population size. No statistically significant variation was found between them. Reasons for these conditions are explained, and future research direction is provided. Key Words: bilingual, dominant languages, monolingual, multilingual, small island developing countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article explores the phenomenon of language switching in clinical practice in the systemic psychotherapy field. I consider multilingual therapists' experiences of switching from use of one language to another in the therapeutic context, the therapists' awareness of this, and the intentions or possible meanings they attribute to these experiences. The interpretative phenomenological approach was used to analyse the experiences of four female family therapists based in London and from a range of cultures and communities. It was found that the therapists construed their multilingual position as both challenging and advantageous. Suggestions are made to explore the language switching phenomenon in supervision and training, as well as to think more widely with monolingual and multilingual colleagues and supervisors about the meaning and the use of language switching in therapeutic practice. Existing research in this area can be developed further to provide a framework that could benefit practitioners in the systemic field. Practitioner points: Language switching was viewed as an invaluable skill by therapists, enabling them to shift between languages and understand their clients' world in a rich wayMultilingual family therapists can address issues of power and voice with families through the practice of language switching [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

English necessitates a linguistic distinction when coding for spatial relations that Spanish does not necessarily make: that of differentiating between CONTAINMENT and CONTACT. Image schemas of CONTAINMENT and CONTACT are evoked when using language to distinguish between these two spatial relations. The speech of Spanish-English simultaneous bilingual children, aged four and seven, was studied to find out to what degree they are linguistically able to evoke these two different image schemas and thus make this distinction when speaking in English. 32 situations of CONTAINMENT and CONTACT were focused on and the children were prompted to describe them using in, out, on and off. The four-year-old showed a much lower command at coding for CONTACT linguistically in English than the seven-year-old. The seven-yearold was able to produce all the kinds of spatial relations at a much higher rate of accuracy though his use of out, for lack of CONTAINMENT, presented his greatest challenge. - Abstract
The students of the Spanish educational system usually have difficulties in the areas of foreign language and mathematics. These problems are partially caused by low affective levels. In this work, "mathemagic" is used in bilingual contexts to determine how its use affects the students’ emotions, anxiety and motivation. In order to do this, we created a solid Theoretical Framework in which we discuss the dimensions and aspects of the affective domain, the principles of UDL (Universal Design for Learning), the approaches that are the basis for the techniques used to manage a bilingual and/or intercultural classroom, and the benefits and characteristics of the use of “mathemagic”. Afterwards, the UDL guidelines that were applied are cited, the techniques used to facilitate the input and contents and to include the culture of the students are explained, and the relationship between them is indicated. Subsequently, after finishing the most theoretical part, we move on to the analysis of the implementation: first, we indicate the particularities of the schools and classrooms in which the sessions were held; then we discuss what happened during them; and finally, we analyze what was observed when using each of the techniques., Departamento de Didáctica de las Ciencias Sociales y Experimentales, Departamento de Filología Inglesa, Grado en Educación Primaria

In this article, I chronologically and critically systematize the normative corpus of national jurisdiction (1980-2006) that governs the public educational policy destined to the communities of indigenous peoples, in Argentina. The theoretical references for the approach of the norms are the frame of analysis of the public policies and the conceptual framework of the critical interculturality. From a qualitative strategy, I develop a conceptual-methodological matrix, according to three analytical criteria: (i) the way in which the problem that leads to act to the state is enunciated,(Ii) how education for communities of indigenous peoples is defined; (Iii) how the educated sectors are involved in the dominant culture, with regard to modifying relations with the communities of indigenous peoples. The results show, on the one hand, the way in which the discourse of law was consolidated, on the other, explain the lack of an intercultural approach in the Argentine educational system. [Abstract] The introduction of bilingual approaches, such as CLIL, are becoming increasingly common in Physical Education (PE) sessions. However, little is known about the consequences of the implementation of these programs in subjects that assume the introduction of a new language. The aim of this research is to find out if a specific CLIL training for Physical Education improves the motor engagement time of the sessions. To this end, four PE teachers were trained based on the questionnaire Evaluation of Physical Education Sessions through CLIL (CESEFA) with two evaluations, a diagnostic one prior to the training and a summative one afterwards. The information obtained was compared by means of descriptive and contrast statistics (Mann-Whitney U test). The results show a significant increase in the MCT, close to 5%, as well as in the organization time (5.6%) and time spent on the task (12.9%). For this reason, it is convenient to highlight the fundamental role of specific methodological training for bilingual teachers in order to achieve excellence in the teaching-learning process.

The inscription published by E. Van Effenterre [Inscriptions archaïques crétoises, BCH 70 (1946), 602-603, recently in A.M. Hakkert (ed.), Cretica Selecta, II Graeca et Romana, Amsterdam 1990, 478-479] is reconsidered on the assumption that it is a bilingual text written in Greek and Eteocretan. Above all, the Eteocretan text (line 1) could offer new interpretations and corroborate the intuition of Cyrus H. Gordon who recognized that a word belonged to North-West Semitic Language at the end of the same text.

This research studies the use and value of Quechua in Arequipa. Methodologically, the research is of a descriptive ethnographic qualitative approach. The discourses correspond to three collaborators from different occupations. One of them is a migrant from Puno, who speaks Spanish and Quechua (bilingual) and is in Arequipa; while the other two are Spanish speakers (monolingual), natives of the city. The study concludes that the bilingual collaborator shows a competence of use and identifies with Quechua during her interpersonal and family communication. In contrast, the monolingual speakers lack mastery of the native language because they do not use it actively, although they emphasize the importance that should be given to Quechua in Arequipa. The special status of the bilingual Romanian text in the 19th century implies specific reading strategies dictated by the layout, the target audience segment and the editorial goals. Within this spatial-temporal framework, we sketched two probable scenarios, each with its advantages and disadvantages. In both cases, using her/his knowledge of a foreign language, the reader must verify the validity of the translator's solutions and engage in a personal interpretation of the source text (ST) in order to maximize the semantic decoding and thus get a broader, a more correct and / or suitable comprehension for her/his cognitive background. The bilingual editions published on Romanian territories clearly mark the intention to educate the readership, through the message they transmit and the opportunity they give to two types of receivers. On the one hand, to the potential self-taught reader wishing to learn a foreign language or improve her/his skills; yet, no reading key is provided and therefore, her/his progress remains impossible to quantify. On the other hand, to the reader-translators, essentially scholars, is given the opportunity to come up with, by and for themselves, a target text (TT) other than the published one, also as an exercise, although at another level. For centuries, bilingual editions have thus proven their usefulness in both self-learning and the translation historians’ work interested in analyzing the effect these publications are likely to have generated upon the Romanian public.

Our study aims to analyze the social exclusion of older Swedish and Finnish speakers living as linguistic minorities in bilingual municipalities in Finland, where municipal authorities are required to offer services in both languages. Data was taken from the 2016 Language Barometer Survey, measuring the quality of language services in bilingual municipalities (n=33). For the purposes of our study, we focused on 2,030 people between the ages of 60 and 84. We included four different language groups, unilingual Swedish and Finnish speakers and Finnish-Swedish bilinguals and examined two social exclusion domains: service and sociocultural exclusion. The results showed that living as a regional minority poses a greater challenge when it comes to social inclusion for the unilingual and bilingual Swedish minority, as opposed to the Finnish-speaking minority. Aineistona tutkimuksessa on käytetty vuoden 2016 Kielibarometriä, jossa mitataan kaksikielisten kuntien (n=33) kielellisten palveluiden laatua.

- Abstract
Some grammarians consider prepositions to be a hybrid category, since they do not conform entirely to either lexical or functional categories. Previous studies on child language acquisition have shown differences in the acquisition of lexical vs. functional prepositions in English. However, other studies show that this difference is not as marked in languages like Spanish. In the light of previous formal studies and acquisition works, this study analyzes the production of the English prepositions in and of, taking the former as lexical and the latter as functional, in the spontaneous longitudinal data from two Spanish/English simultaneous bilingual children. The aim is to determine whether the pattern of acquisition of English prepositions exhibited by Spanish/English bilingual children is similar to that of English monolingual children. The results suggest that the hybrid nature of prepositions may not affect the Spanish/English bilingual children as much as it affects the English monolingual children. This points to crosslinguistic differences in the acquisition of lexical and functional prepositions and to potential crosslinguistic influence effects from Spanish into English., Algunos gramáticos consideran que las preposiciones son una categoría híbrida, que no se acomoda completamente a la categoría léxica ni a la funcional.

The project educational entrepreneurship and creation of educommunicative content: the creation of the website "Educar Bilíngue" to encourage bilingualism in early childhood, aims to promote the practice of bilingualism in children of the portuguese and english languages through playful content for parents and their children at an early age. The website is used to share content in a ludic narrative, as an educommunicative product with practical applications in everyday life. The proposal is born digital and using social midias to generate value for the brand. In addition, the business already has a social meaning as an integral part of this creation, since the "Educar Bilíngue" will have content available for free for all parents who want to devote time to the development of their children, but who do not have the financial resources to invest in paid content. To build this work, na empirical research was conducted with directed propositions. So, the proposal identified in the research, theoretically based on precepts in the area of Technology of Information and Communication, Educational Entrepreneurship, Bilingual Education, is to show how a website can foster and leverage children's bilingual education, through the support of parents who share content and experiences in the education of their kids in a second language, creating a valuable brand for the modern consumer. As strong points we highlight the possibility of partnerships with thematic content creators, possibility of new business aggregates, relationship building and not persuasion, 100% digital material production, and interfaces with other areas. analyses the data obtained by means of 8 semi-structured interviews as well as questionnaires on the perceptions of 80 teachers, either bilingual and non bilingual, who teach at an Infant or Primary level in half of the state schools running a bilingual program in Cantabria (Spain). Results show that there is no consensus among CLIL and mainstream teachers on perceptions about some of the challenges to be faced in a bilingual program such as training and coordination. Nevertheless, it can be concluded that teachers can make very illuminating contributions that can improve design and regulation of bilingual programmes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The huge increase in the number of bilingual programs in Spain in recent decades makes it necessary to study teachers' perceptions of the legislation governing these programs. The purpose of this article is to try to ascertain if language policy is in tune with teachers" perceptions, and also if teachers in bilingual and non-bilingual programs share perceptions. To this end, we have gathered and analysed data from 80 teachers in half of the Infant-Primary bilingual schools of the Autonomous Community of Cantabria (Spain). We discuss the results obtained by means of a descriptive analysis of the data collected from questionnaires as well as from statistical tests using SPSS. We conclude that there is a gap between bilingual and non-bilingual teachers" perceptions suggesting that there is a need for discussion at school. Our analysis also suggests that teachers do not feel that their opinions and beliefs are represented by our current legislation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
