Background: Solar radiation is the primary risk factor for skin cancer, with personal exposure influenced by environmental and behavioral factors. At higher temperatures, behavioral changes increase solar radiation exposure. Objectives: Examine the relationships between solar radiation, ambient temperature, age, and skin cancer. Methods: For the contiguous United States, we obtained the state mean global horizontal irradiance (GHI), daily maximum temperature, and number of skin cancer removals in the Medicare population. For skin cancer removals, we defined more sun‐exposed skin as the head, neck, hands, and feet, and less sun‐exposed skin as the trunk, arms, and legs. Results: By comparing the temperature thresholds 17°C, 20°C, 24°C, 27°C, 31°C, and 34°C, we found that the annual number of days above 24°C was the strongest temperature‐related predictor of skin cancer removals. Multivariable linear regression showed that the number of days above 24°C predicted more skin cancer removals for all body locations and less sun‐exposed skin (p = 0.008 and p = 0.003, respectively), while GHI did not (p = 0.1 and p = 0.8, respectively). GHI only predicted more skin cancer removals for more sun‐exposed skin (p = 0.02). Conclusion: More days above 24°C was a better predictor of skin cancer removals than GHI for all skin locations and less sun‐exposed skin, suggesting that the behavioral changes occurring at warmer temperatures are more predictive of skin cancer removals than solar irradiance. Due to rising global temperatures, skin cancer incidence may further increase. Temperature‐related behavioral changes represent a potential target for skin cancer prevention efforts. The objective of this work is to provide a tool to estimate the impact of preventive interventions that reduce the exposure to smoking and sedentary lifestyle of the Italian population, with the goal of selecting optimal interventions. Methods: We construct a Markovian model that simulates the state of each subject of the Italian population. The model predicts the distribution of subjects in each health status and risk factor status for every year of the simulation. Based on this distribution, the model provides a rich output summary, such as the number of incident and prevalent cases for each tracing disease and the Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALY), used to assess the impact of preventive interventions, and how this impact is shaped in time. Results: This paper focuses on the methodological aspects of the model. The proposed model is flexible and can be applied to estimate the impact of complex interventions on the two risk factors and adapted to consider different cohorts. We validate the model by simulating the evolution of the Italian population from 2009 to 2017 and comparing the output with historical data. Furthermore, as a case-study, we simulate a counterfactual scenario where both tobacco and sedentary lifestyle are eradicated from the Italian population in 2019 and estimate the impact of such intervention over the following 20 years. Conclusions: We propose a Markovian model to estimate how interventions on smoking and sedentary lifestyle can affect the reduction of the disease burden, and validate the model on historical data. The model is flexible and allows to extend the analysis to consider more risk factors in future research. However, we are aware that, given the ever-increasing availability of data, it is necessary in the future to increase the complexity of the model, to be closer to reality and to provide decision-making support to the policy-makers. Context The interplay between cardiovascular health metrics (CVHMs) and microvascular disease (MVD) in relation to the risk of incident coronary heart disease (CHD) among individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) remains to be evaluated. Objective To investigate the role of MVD and CVHMs in the development of CHD among T2DM. Design We included 19 664 participants with T2DM from the UK Biobank who had CVHM data and were free of CHD during recruitment. CVHMs were defined based on 5 behavioral (body mass index, diet, sleep duration, smoking, and regular exercise) and 3 biological (glycemic control, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension) factors. MVD was defined as the presence of retinopathy, peripheral neuropathy, or chronic kidney disease. Hazard ratio (HR) and 95% CI of CHD were estimated by multivariable Cox regression models. Results There were 3252 incident cases of CHD recorded after a median follow-up of 12.3 years. After multivariable adjustment, each MVD was separately associated with risk of CHD, and those who had 1 or ≥ 2 MVD had a 27% and an 87% increased risk of developing CHD, respectively. Each unfavorable CVHM was associated with a higher risk of CHD. As compared with MVD-free participants who had ideal CVHMs, those who had ≥ 2 MVD and had poor CVHMs were at particularly high risk of incident CHD (HR = 4.58; 95% CI: 3.58, 5.86), similarly when considering behavioral CVH or biological CVH separately. On an additive scale, there was a positive statistically significant interaction between number of MVD and CVHMs. Conclusion Coexistence of multiple MVDs was associated with a substantially higher risk of CHD among individuals with T2DM. The increasing integration of surveillance systems in various domains has amplified the importance of ensuring cybersecurity and predicting behavioral risk factors. This paper presents an innovative approach, the "Risk and Anomaly Detection via Deviation Analysis and Ranges" (RADAR) algorithm, designed to enhance cybersecurity and enable behavioral risk factor prediction within surveillance systems using machine learning techniques. RADAR is applied to a dataset from a Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a critical component of public health monitoring. The algorithm comprises several steps, including data preprocessing, Normalization and a dynamic threshold for anomaly detection based on deviation analysis. Furthermore, an ensemble method is employed to identify instances as anomalies if they deviate from multiple attributes simultaneously. In addition to anomaly detection, RADAR contributes to behavioral risk prediction by integrating machine learning classifiers. It allows the system to predict behavioral risk factors based on the data, providing valuable insights for surveillance purposes. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of RADAR in enhancing cybersecurity by identifying anomalies and enabling accurate behavioral risk factor prediction. Abstract Background No previous research of university students in Finland assessed lifestyle behavioral risk factors (BRFs), grouped students into clusters, appraised the relationships of the clusters with their mental well-being, whilst controlling for confounders. The current study undertook this task. Methods Students at the University of Turku (n = 1177, aged 22.96 ± 5.2 years) completed an online questionnaire that tapped information on sociodemographic variables (age, sex, income sufficiency, accommodation during the semester), four BRFs [problematic alcohol consumption, smoking, food consumption habits, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA)], as well as depressive symptoms and stress. Two-step cluster analysis of the BRFs using log-likelihood distance measure categorized students into well-defined clusters. Two regression models appraised the associations between cluster membership and depressive symptoms and stress, controlling for sex, income sufficiency and accommodation during the semester. Results Slightly more than half the study participants (56.8%) had always/mostly sufficient income and 33% lived with parents/partner. Cluster analysis of BRFs identified three distinct student clusters, namely Cluster 1 (Healthy Group), Cluster 2 (Smokers), and Cluster 3 (Nonsmokers but Problematic Drinkers). Age, sex and MVPA were not different across the clusters, but Clusters 1 and 3 comprised significantly more respondents with always/mostly sufficient income and lived with their parents/partner during the semester. All members in Clusters 1 and 3 were non-smokers, while all Cluster 2 members comprised occasional/daily smokers. Problematic drinking was significantly different between clusters (Cluster 1 = 0%, Cluster 2 = 54%, Cluster 3 = 100%). Cluster 3 exhibited significantly healthier nutrition habits than both other clusters. Regression analysis showed: (1) males and those with sufficient income were significantly less likely to report depressive symptoms or stress; (2) those living with parents/partner were significantly less likely to experience depressive symptoms; (3) compared to Cluster 1, students in the two other clusters were significantly more likely to report higher depressive symptoms; and (4) only students in Cluster 2 were more likely to report higher stress. Conclusions BRFs cluster together, however, such clustering is not a clear-cut, all-or-none phenomenon. Students with BRFs consistently exhibited higher levels of depressive symptoms and stress. Educational and motivational interventions should target at-risk individuals including those with insufficient income or living with roommates or alone.

We conducted an epidemiological non-interventional cross-sectional and case-control study from 1 January 2023 until 26 May 2023 in Oltenia region, southwestern Romania. Throughout the research, 160 consecutive patients were included from two different clinical departments (1—Pneumology; 2—Diabetes and Nutritional Diseases). Subjects were voluntary adult individuals of any gender who expressed their written consent. The clinical data of the patients were correlated with the exposure to behavioral risk factors (diet, lifestyle, exposure to pollutants) to identify some negative implications that could be corrected to improve the quality of life of patients with simple chronic obstructive airway diseases of the lung or associated with metabolic syndrome (MS). In the first group of patients with respiratory diseases, there was a higher degree of exposure to toxic substances (43.75%) compared to the second group of patients with diabetes (18.75%); it is also noticeable that in the first group, there were noticeably fewer individuals who have never smoked (25%) compared to the second group (50%). Respiratory function impairment was observed to be more severe in overweight individuals. In the group of patients with known lung diseases, a positive correlation was noted between the presence of MS and respiratory dysfunctions of greater severity. Additionally, potential exacerbating factors affecting lung function, such as direct exposure to toxins and smoking, were considered. Potential secondary factors exacerbating respiratory dysfunction were considered by correlating biochemical parameters with dietary habits. These included reduced consumption of vegetables, inadequate hydration, and increased intake of sweets and products high in saturated or trans fats (commonly found in junk food), primarily due to their potential contribution to excess weight. Compared to patients without MS, the severity of the pulmonary function impairment correlated with the number of criteria met for MS and, independently, with an increase in weight. Purpose: To examine whether sociodemographic characteristics, access to care, risk behavior factors, and chronic health conditions were associated with colorectal cancer (CRC) screening utilization among breast, cervical, prostate, skin, and lung cancer survivors. Methods: We analyzed the 2020 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data on 9780 eligible cancer survivors. Descriptive statistics and multivariable logistic regression models were applied to assess the association between guideline-concordant CRC screening and the mentioned characteristics. Results: Overall, 81.9%, 65%, 88%,78.1%, and 80.1% of breast, cervical, prostate, skin, and lung cancer survivors received CRC screening, respectively (p-value < 0.001). In multivariable analysis, breast, cervical, and skin cancer survivors aged 60 years or older were associated with higher odds of receiving CRC screening. Respondents that had their recency of routine checkup two or more years before had lower odds of having CRC screening among cervical (OR = 0.06; 95% CI, 0.02–0.22), prostate (OR = 0.26; 95% CI, 0.14–0.49), and skin cancer (OR = 0.50; 95% CI, 0.36–0.70) survivors. The presence of chronic diseases was also associated with guideline-concordant CRC screening among breast, prostate, and skin cancer survivors. Conclusions: Our findings provide important evidence on potential factors that are associated with guideline-concordant CRC screening utilization across different cancer survivors, which include older age, recency of routine checkup, and multiple chronic diseases. Moreover, variation in CRC screening utilization across cancer survivors may highlight missed opportunities for secondary cancer prevention. Implications for Cancer Survivors: Establishing clear CRC screening guidelines and including patient-provider communication on recommendation in cancer survivorship care may increase adherence to CRC screening. Introduction: breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy and an important cause of cancer death among females worldwide. The disease accounted for 25% (1.67 million) of new cancer cases and the fifth cause of cancer deaths. Incidence of all types of cancers is approximately 25% in Sierra Leone. However, there was no documented evidence on risk factors for breast cancer among women in the country. The main aim of this study was to assess risk factors associated with breast cancer among women screened for breast cancer in Freetown Sierra Leone. Methods: we conducted a case-control study on breast cancer involving 116 confirmed breast cancer cases and 116 controls. Questionnaire was designed to collect data on socio-demographic, reproductive and behavioral risk factors. Analysis was carried using logistic regression to assess the associations between breast cancer and the risk factors. Results: in the final multiple logistic regression, had formal educational level, (aOR 0.1, 0.03-0.26, p= 0.001) physical activity for more than 30 minutes per week (aOR 0.5 (0.9-0.7, p=0.001). Cigarette smoking (aOR 4.8, 1.2-18.5, p=0.023) and family history of breast cancer (aOR 9.9 cigarette smoking (OR 4.4, 1.2-18.5, p=0.023) and family history of breast cancer (OR 9.9, 2.7-36.45, p=0.040) were identified as the main risk factors for breast cancer. This study did not find any statistically significant associations between reproductive risk factors and breast cancer. Conclusion: risk factors for breast cancer among women in Sierra Leone include educational level, physical activity, cigarette smoking and family history of breast cancer. Abstract Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the global public health problem which has been associated with increasing prevalence of modifiable CVDs risk factors. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and knowledge of modifiable CVDs risk factors among vulnerable population of Central Tanzania. Methods A community-based cross-sectional study design was employed. A total of 749 participants were interviewed. The socio-demographic information and modifiable CVDs risk factors (behavioral and biological) were measured using a modified World Health Organization (WHO) STEPwise approach for chronic disease risk factor surveillance. Knowledge of modifiable CVDs risk factors was measured by comprehensive heart disease knowledge questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the knowledge and prevalence of modifiable CVDs risk factors. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the factors associated with adequate knowledge of CVDs risk factors. Results The prevalence of béhavioral risk factors were; current smokers and alcohol consumers were 4.4% and 18.0% respectively, use of raw salt was 43.7%, consumption of fruit/vegetables

Adolescents face an increased risk of contracting sexually transmitted infections (STIs) with alarming data especially concerning HIV. Limited data exists for teenagers regarding the influence of their gender identity (GI) and sexual orientation on the risk of STIs. This narrative review aims to analyse the available data to provide a comprehensive overview of STIs incidence and risk factors among adolescents, taking into account the unique circumstances related to various sexual orientations and GIs. Transgender and gender minority (TGM) youth experience more challenges accessing health services compared to cisgender youth. This is often attributed to non-inclusive health environments, barriers to obtaining medical gender affirmation, and an underestimation of sexual risk perception. Literature analysis has revealed that the majority of adolescents, both cisgender and TGM, have limited awareness regarding the risks associated with their sexual behaviors, the most common sexually transmitted diseases, and strategies for prevention, such as PrEP and HPV vaccination. Moreover, a significant portion of pediatricians possess limited knowledge and comfort in addressing various aspects of sexual health, particularly when it involves discussing topics such as sexual orientation, gender identity, and sexual behaviors with sexually active adolescents. This underscores the pressing need for enhanced education for pediatricians, specifically focusing on STIs diagnosis, prevention, and screening.

IntroductionThe prevalence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is increasing worldwide. Several modifiable risk factors, such as smoking, alcohol drinking, physical inactivity, and obesity, have been linked to the development of NCDs in both genders. Understanding the prevalence of these risk factors and their associated factors is crucial for effective intervention planning in adult populations. This study aimed to provide an overview of the prevalence and associated factors of these risk behaviors among different genders of adults in West Kazakhstan.MethodsA cross-sectional study was conducted in four regions of West Kazakhstan. A stratified multistage sampling technique was utilized to obtain a representative sample size of 4,800 participants aged 18 -69 years. Trained researchers administered face-to-face interviews using validated questionnaires to gather information pertaining to sociodemographic characteristics, smoking habits, alcohol drinking, dietary patterns, physical activity levels, body mass index (BMI), and prevalent diseases.ResultsThis study, which included 4,800 participants from West Kazakhstan, revealed some striking numerical findings. The overall prevalence rates of behavioral risk factors and metabolic conditions were as follows: smoking was 13.6% (95%CI: 3.2–24.0%), alcohol drinking was 47.0% (27.7–66.3%), current obesity was 22.3% (9.0–35.6%), and physical inactivity was 80.7% (55.4–106.0%). In addition, the overall prevalence rates of metabolic conditions were 25.6% (11.3–39.9%) for hypertension, 7.5% (0.2–15.2%) for diabetes, 11.8% (2.1–21.5%) for high cholesterol, and 13.0% (2.8–23.2%) for cardiovascular diseases. Additionally, a higher prevalence of high cholesterol was observed in men, and a greater prevalence of heart disease was identified in women. Multinomial logistic regression revealed that physical inactivity was associated with hypertension, diabetes, and heart disease, while obesity was linked to hypertension, high cholesterol, and heart disease.DiscussionThis study in West Kazakhstan identified variations in the prevalence of behavioral risk factors and NCDs, highlighting gender, age, and regional disparities. Notably, men showed higher rates of smoking and alcohol drinking, while women exhibited a greater prevalence of physical inactivity and obesity. Gender and regional differences were evident, with the West Kazakhstan region standing out for distinct patterns. Tailored interventions are crucial to address these disparities and enhance public health in the region.

Objectives: Periodontitis is a non-communicable disease (NCD) that may be linked to other NCDs through shared risk factors. Accordingly, we analyzed the relationship between periodontitis and behavioral and metabolic risks common to NCDs in Brazilian adults over three decades. Methods: Indicators of periodontitis, behavioral risks (smoking, alcohol use, sugar-sweetened beverages (SSB), and physical activity), and metabolic risks (overweight/obesity, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, and hypertension) in Brazilian adults (25–49 y-old) between 1990 to 2019 were obtained from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019. Data were adjusted for Gini index. Fixed-effects and Prais-Winsten regressions were performed (p < 0.05). Results: The prevalence of periodontitis has increased among Brazilians since 2005. High-SSB diet, alcohol use, and metabolic risks increased between 1990–2019, whereas smoking decreased. In crude models, periodontitis prevalence increased with alcohol use (2545.1; 95%CI: 2307.9–2782.3), high-SSB diet (365.5; 95%CI: 322.5–408.4), low physical activity (1784.4; 95%CI: 763.7–2805.0), overweight/obesity (172.3; 95%CI: 156.3–188.4), dyslipidemia (734.5; 95%CI: 624.7–844.2), and hyperglycemia (1774.3; 95%CI: 1555.9–1992.7). After adjustment for the Gini index, periodontitis prevalence raised with a high-SBB diet (1416.0; 95%CI: 1120.2–1711.8), overweight/obesity (629.9; 95%CI: 573.1–686.8), dyslipidemia (2035.8; 95%CI: 1728.1–2343.5), and hyperglycemia (8918.1; 95%CI: 7979.8–9856.3). Conclusions: Periodontitis has increased in Brazil since 2005, despite the smoking reduction. Sugar-sweetened beverage was the behavioral risk that mostly accompanied the periodontal trend. Clinical relevance: Our results support upstream strategies targeting commercial, social, political, and structural determinants to tackle NCDs and reduce oral health inequities. Introduction: Concerns over the escalating burden of non-communicable diseases call for the redressal of behavioral risk factors like increased body mass index. Most studies have failed to quantify the contribution of socio-demographic characteristics in a linear trend. The present study aims to estimate the current prevalence of overweight and obesity in Indian adults and the contribution of different socio-demographic factors to the increasing prevalence. Methods: We carried out a secondary data analysis of two National Family Health Survey (NFHS) rounds. The final sample includes 558,122 women and 84,477 men from round 4, and 574,099 women and 74,761 men were included from round 5, using a multi-stage stratified random sampling approach. Overweight/obesity was our primary dependent variable. Weighted bivariate analysis was used to ascertain the prevalence, and the adjusted odds ratios were computed to ascertain the potential predictors. The contribution of different factors towards rising burden over two time points was estimated using multivariate decomposition analysis for non-linear response models. Results: Overall weighted prevalence of overweight and obesity in males and females per NFHS-5 was 44.02% and 41.16%, respectively, compared to 37.71% and 36.14% in NFHS-4. Decomposition analyses depict that the proportion of obesity increased by 6.37% and 5.10% points among men and women, respectively, over the two rounds. Compositional differences of participants (endowment) attributed to 16.54 and 49.90% differences, and the difference in coefficient or effect accounted for 83.46 and 50.10%, respectively, of the increase in the prevalence. The most significant factors contributing to increased prevalence were age, improving socio-economic status, smoking, unclean cooking fuel, and diabetes. Conclusions: The incremental rise in such a short period, mainly attributed to the effect of socio-demographic variables, is concerning. Policy interventions should prioritize health advocacy programs and aggressively target behavioral modifications while preparing the health systems to manage the people living with obesity. Aim. To analyze socio-demographic characteristics and the prevalence of behavioral risk factors in the adult population of the Vladimir region, taking into account sex characteristics.Material and methods. This cross-sectional population-based study was organized in 5 cities of the Vladimir region (Vladimir, Kovrov, Murom, Yuryev-Polsky and Vyazniki) from May 2018 to March 2020. The study included 1350 men and women aged 30-69 years. The response rate was 87%. A total of 1174 people completed the study, of whom 424 (36.1%) were men and 750 (63.9%) were women. Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the global public health problem which has been associated with increasing prevalence of modifiable CVDs risk factors. This study aimed to describe the prevalence and knowledge of modifiable CVDs risk factors among vulnerable population of Central Tanzania. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study design was employed. A total of 749 participants were interviewed. The socio-demographic information and modifiable CVDs risk factors (behavioral and biological) were measured using a modified World Health Organization (WHO) STEPwise approach for chronic disease risk factor surveillance. Knowledge of modifiable CVDs risk factors was measured by comprehensive heart disease knowledge questionnaire. Descriptive statistics were used to describe the knowledge and prevalence of modifiable CVDs risk factors. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine the factors associated with adequate knowledge of CVDs risk factors. Results: The prevalence of béhavioral risk factors were; current smokers and alcohol consumers were 4.4% and 18.0% respectively, use of raw salt was 43.7%, consumption of fruit/vegetables < 5 days per week was 56.9%. The prevalence of Biological CVDs risk factors was as follows: Overall, 63.5% (33.3% overweight and 29.9% obese) were overweight or obese, 4.5% were diabetic and 43.4% were hypertensive. Only 35.4% of participants had adequate knowledge of CVDs risk factors. Being a male (AOR = 1.44, 95%CI = 1.01–2.06, p <.05), having primary education (AOR = 6.43, 95%CI = 2.39–17.36, p <.0001), being employed (AOR = 1.59, 95%CI = 1.00-2.52, p <.05), ever checked blood pressure (AOR = 0.59, 95%CI = 0.42–0.84, p <.001), family history of hypertension (AOR = 0.38, 95%CI = 0.25–0.57, p <.0001) determined adequate knowledge of CVDs risk factors. In the last 20 years, computer technology has developed rapidly, and internet-based social networks (e.g. Facebook, Instagram, WeChat, or Twitter) have proliferated even faster, becoming a very important part of people's lives. But in recent years, a dependence to these sites has emerged, called by many authors social media addiction. In the present study, we aim to analyze if there really is an addiction to social media networks, what are its demographic aspects, which are the health problems that occur in these addicted people, and how to intervene therapeutically in these cases. Currently, social media addiction is not recognized as a disorder in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, but is considered more of a behavioral addiction or a subtype of Internet addiction. If we look at this matter from an anthropological and philosophical point of view, such type of addiction can originate in what is related to the specificity of man in the contemporary world. Symptoms of excessive use of SM networks may include decreased ability to concentrate and decreased academic performance, insomnia, altered selfperception, decreased self-esteem, anxiety, depressed mood, and psychoemotional lability. SM addiction prevention strategies should be implemented based on behavioral risk factors and demographic characteristics. The goal of treatment for this type of addiction, unlike other addictions, is not total abstinence, but rather controlled use of social networks, and relapse prevention should use strategies based on cognitive-behavioral therapies. Background: Noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) are increasing, for which some behavioral risk factors are major concerns. mHealth has been found to be effective in changing these behavioral patterns. Objective: To assess effectiveness of mHealth technology in modification of dietary habits and physical activity, among individuals having NCDs or their risk factors, in primary healthcare settings in South East Asian Region Countries. Materials and Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis was done with the primary outcome as effectiveness of mHealth for improving dietary practices and increasing physical activity. Articles were retrieved from PubMed, Cochrane Central, Google Scholar, and Pre-print servers followed by forward and backward searching. Quality and risk of bias of included studies were assessed. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan v. 5.4.1 software. Heterogeneity was tested using χ2 test and measured using I2 statistic, with Forest plots as the final outcome. Results: Nine publications from seven studies, of which seven were conducted in India and two in Bangladesh, qualified for the review. All studies used varied mHealth interventions. Most studies reported beneficial effects in reducing inadequate/improper diet and insufficient/improving physical activity, at community/workplace settings, except two studies reporting no apparent impact, both being from Bangladesh. Meta-analysis revealed statistically significant differences between intervention and control groups for pooled estimates of reduced dietary energy and increased fruits/vegetables. Although heterogeneity is absent between studies considered for fruits/vegetables, both studies were compromised in quality and bias. Studies on dietary energy intake had high statistical heterogeneity, in addition to having high risk of bias. Hence, the results need to be interpreted with caution. No effect was observed on increasing physical activity. Conclusion: mHealth interventions have huge potential to facilitate behavior change. However, more research is needed before its potential scale-up.

Introduction: Dengue cases continue to be reported every year in India despite various measures being taken for the prevention. In the absence of an effective vaccine and a specific treatment, protective behavior at individual level is of paramount importance. This case–control study was undertaken to find the association of some important behavioral risk factors with dengue fever. Methods: The study included all consecutive patients of dengue fever >15 years of age visiting a tertiary care hospital in Pune during 2018 confirmed by laboratory investigation as cases. Healthy individuals living in the same locality as cases were selected as controls. Cases and controls were interviewed using a pretested semistructured questionnaire called Dengue Risk Assessment to Initiate Control to collect information on behaviors for increased vulnerability to dengue infection. Relevant data were collected and compiled using Microsoft Excel and the data were analyzed using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 20 (IBM, USA). Results: A total of 30 cases (mean age 30.2, standard deviation [SD] 9.2) and 60 controls (mean age 30.08, SD 7.7) were recruited in the study. The results showed that cases were more likely to have certain behaviors associated with dengue than controls, namely, not practicing container management at home during the last 2 weeks (odds ratio [OR] = 3.57 and 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.20–10.63), not using repellents (OR = 2.89 and 95% CI: 1.16–7.19), not wearing full-sleeve shirt/trousers (OR = 6.14 and 95% CI: 1.75–23.8), and absence of source reduction practices in the surrounding area (OR = 8.84 and 95% CI: 1.10–71.42). A significantly larger proportion of cases had lower practice scores (≤7) for dengue prevention than controls (OR = 5.20 and 95% CI: 1.41–19.23). Conclusion: This study found that odds of not practicing conventional personal protective measures and container management were higher among dengue fever individuals than controls.

Abstract Background Little is known regarding the role of gender as a possible modulator in determining the associations between lifestyle risk factors and depression in older adults. Objectives This study examined whether gender modulates the relationship between depression and lifestyle risk factors in Korean adults aged 65 years and older (n = 3700). Methods Data were obtained from the 2016 and 2018 Korea National Health and Examination Survey. The primary outcome was depression, assessed with the patient health questionnaire-9. As exposures, smoking habits, at-risk alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity were assessed with a standardized questionnaire. In addition, mean adequacy ratio (MAR) as an indicator of overall nutritional inadequacy was assessed with dietary intakes of macro- and micronutrients. Results In men only, either two or three and more risk factors were significantly associated with higher depression risk (OR (95% confidence interval, CI) = 2.886 (1.003–8.299) and OR (95% CI) = 3.109 (1.064–9.097), respectively). In women only, either two or three and more risk factors were also significantly associated with higher depression risk (OR (95% CI) = 1.505 (1.067–2.124) and OR (95% CI) = 2.828 (1.527–5.239), respectively). In particular, the presence of smoking habits and MAR were the major determinants of depression (OR (95% CI) = 1.835 (1.09–3.10) and OR (95% CI) = 1.585 (1.125–2.233), respectively) in women only. Finally, a moderation analysis with the Hayes PROCESS Macro showed a significant moderating effect of gender (β (95% CI) = 0.633 (0.206 ~ 1.060)) on the relationship between risk factors and depression. In addition, the slope of the relationship was much steeper in women than in men. Conclusion Current findings suggest that lifestyle risk factors are more closely associated with depression risk in women than in men.

Abstract Background Minimal data is available on the prevalence and correlates of hypertension and prehypertension in Dubai. The study aims to measure the prevalence of hypertension and pre-hypertension and the associated socio-demographic characteristics, behavioral risk factors and comorbidities among the adult population of Dubai. Methods This study used data from the Dubai Household Health Survey, 2019. A cross-sectional population survey based on a complex stratified cluster random design. The total eligible sample included 2530 adults (18+). Sociodemographic and behavioral factors were considered as independent covariates. The main study outcome variables, pre-hypertension and hypertension, were ordinal, with normotension as the reference group. Results The overall prevalence of hypertension in adults was 32.5% (38.37% in males and 16.66% in females). Prehypertension was prevalent in 29.8% of adults in Dubai (28.85% in males and 32.31% in females). Objective: Maintaining health preventive behaviours in later life reduces the risk of non-communicable diseases. However, these behaviours often require effort and discipline to adopt and may be prone to procrastination. This study examined whether procrastination affected engagement in health preventive behaviours among older adults., Methods: We applied generalised additive models to data from the 2020 wave of the United States Health and Retirement Study. Our analytic sample consisted of adults aged 50+ (n = 1338; mean = 68.24; range = 50-95). Our analysis focused on six health preventive behaviours: prostate exams, mammograms, cholesterol screenings, pap smears, flu shots, and dental visits., Results: Procrastination was associated with less frequent engagement in mammograms and cholesterol screenings among women, though it had no significant association with pap smears or flu shots. Additionally, procrastination interacted with depression reducing the likelihood of prostate exams in men and dental visits in both men and women, such that individuals with high procrastination and low depression were associated with less frequent engagement in both preventive health behaviours., Conclusions: Procrastination may be a behavioral risk factor for maintaining optimal health in older adults. Non-communicable diseases, previously thought of as a problem of high-income countries, now coexist in low- and middle-income countries, including the countries of origin for many refugees traveling to Europe. We aimed to describe the prevalence of risk factors for non-communicable diseases among refugees, asylum seekers, and subsidiary protection beneficiaries resettled or relocated in Portugal between 2015 and 2020 and compare these to the prevalence of risk factors in the 12 months before they left their country of origin. A cross-sectional study was conducted between 2019 and 2020 of all refugees, asylum seekers, and subsidiary protection beneficiaries attending a Lisbon, Portugal refugee center. Behavioral and biological risk factors were assessed using the WHO STEPwise modified questionnaire. A descriptive statistical analysis was conducted, which included 80 respondents, mainly men, with an average age of of 30.3 ± 9.8 years. The prevalence of several behavioral risk factors for non-communicable diseases among refugees, asylum seekers, and subsidiary protection beneficiaries was higher at the time of the study than in the 12 months before leaving the country of origin. Differences between men and women were noted in tobacco (49.1% vs. 25.9%) and alcohol use (43.4% vs. 18.5%) in the receiving country. Overweight and obesity also showed differences by gender (7.5% vs. 11.1% and 39.6% vs. 48.1%). The prevalence of suicidal ideation and suicidalplanning was high, and varied from 6.3% and 20% in the country of origin to 16.3% and 38.5% respectively in the receiving country, however the prevalence of suicide attempts was lower in the receiving country (66.7%) compared to the country of origin (100.0%). Information on health and social determinants is critical to identify priorities and increase access to access to gender-specific health and community level interventions, including mental health, to reduce risk factors associated with refugee relocation and resettlement.

Methods: The bio-behavioral survey of MSW in Nairobi, Kenya, utilized respondentdriven sampling to recruit MSW. Structured interviews captured MSW's behavioral aspects, and biological tests for HIV and other STIs. Results: Analysis of the two age categories, 18-24 years (younger MSW) and 25 years and above (older MSW), shows that of all participants, a significantly higher proportion of younger MSW (59.6% crude, 69.6% RDS-adjusted) were recruited compared to older MSW (40.4% crude, 30.4% RDS-adjusted, P < 0.001). Young male sex workers were more likely to report multiple sexual partnerships in the last 12 months and had multiple receptive anal intercourses (RAI) acts in the last 30 days than older MSW: 0-2 RAI acts (20.6 vs. 8.6%, P = 0.0300), 3-5 RAI acts (26.3 vs. 11.5, P < 0.001), and >5 RAI acts (26.3 vs. 11.5%, P < 0.01). Furthermore, younger MSW were significantly more likely to have 3-5 insertive anal intercourse (IAI) with a regular male sex partner in the last 30 days than older MSW (24.3 vs. 8.0%, P < 0.01). Younger MSW were also more likely to report other STIs [28.5%(95%CI: 19.1-40.4%)] than older MSW[19.0%(95%CI: 7.7-29.2%)]. However, older MSWs were more likely to be infected with HIV than younger MSW (32.3 vs. 9.9 %, P < 0.01). Conclusions: Owing to the high risk sexual behaviors, HIV and STIs risks among younger and older MSW, intensified and targeted efforts are needed on risk reduction campaigns and expanded access to services. Background and objective: Little is known regarding the prognostic role of unintentional weight loss (UWL) in mortality risk among older Korean men. This study examined the associations of UWL and unhealthy behaviors with all-cause and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in Korean men aged 60 years and older. Material and Methods: Data (n = 2,309) obtained from the Korean longitudinal study of aging were analyzed. Exposures were UWL, smoking, alcohol abuse, underweight/obesity, and physical inactivity. Primary outcomes were all-cause mortality and CVD mortality. Covariates included parameters of sociodemographics and health conditions. Results: Individuals with three or more risk factors had significantly higher risks of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.536, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.084~2.175, P = 0.016) and CVD mortality (HR = 2.925, 95% CI = 1.386~6.174, P = 0.005) even after adjustments for parameters of sociodemographics, health conditions, and UWL compared to individuals with zero risk factors (HR = 1). Additionally, individuals with UWL had a significantly higher risk of all-cause mortality (HR = 1.307, 95% CI = 1.052~1.623, P = 0.016) even after adjustments for the covariates and lifestyle risk factors compared to individuals with normal weight (HR = 1). Conclusion: The current findings show that exposure to three or more lifestyle risk factors is an independent predictor of all-cause mortality and CVD mortality, and UWL was a predictor of all-cause mortality in older Korean men.

Introduction: Behavioral risk factors, in addition to increasing the risk of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) transmission, can affect antiretroviral therapy (ART) compliance of people with the condition. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of behavioral risk factors and its' effect on adherence to antiretroviral drugs (ARV) treatment in patients with HIV/AIDS in Western Iran. Material and methods: This study was performed among all patients diagnosed with HIV/AIDS in Kermanshah Province for 25 years, from 1995 till 2019. Adherence to treatment in these patients was divided into three categories according to the World Health Organization definition, i.e., non-adherence, cessation, and adherence to treatment. Using single-variable and multi-variable logistic regression, the effect of important variables in four models was modified, and the effect of each of behavioral risk factors was analyzed in patients with non-adherence or experienced cessation compared to those who adhered to ARV. Results: Of the 2,867 patients with HIV/AIDS, 2,449 (85.42%) were males. The mean age of HIV infection was 33.36 ± 11.8 years. In 1995, less than 10 percent of people received treatment, and in 2019, it was more than 67 percent. All behavioral risk factors increased non-adherence to medication and cessation of ARV. In general, after controlling confounding variables, except for needle sharing, all behavioral variables affected ARV treatment. The greatest impact on non-adherence to medication was history of drug abuse, history of imprisonment, history of injection drug use, and sex with non-spouse, with a chance of 10.87 (range, 7.21-16.39), 3.94 (range, 2.84-5.46), 3.86 (range, 2.47-6.03), and 3.38 (range, 2.19-5.23) times more than patients without these risk factors, respectively. Conclusions: Although the process of receiving treatment has been increasing since 2005, the nonadherence to medication is still high in high-risk groups; therefore it is important to focus more on reducing non-adherence and eventual cessation of treatment. In some studies, investigators attempt to control for variables such as smoking status, exercise, or diet. However, the relationship between these factors and BDNF is not clearly established. Furthermore, some studies have questioned whether a difference in the impact of BDNF exists between psychiatric and healthy populations.Purpose: We aim to examine the association between serum BDNF levels and modifiable risk factors such as body mass index (BMI), smoking, exercise levels, and diet. Subsequently, we aim to examine whether the relationship between these risk factors and serum BDNF is different between psychiatric and control populations.Patients and Methods: We use cross-sectional data from an age- and sex-matched case–control study of participants with psychiatric inpatients and community controls without psychiatric diagnoses. Participants completed comprehensive assessments at study enrolment including sociodemographic information, smoking status, exercise, diet, and BMI. Serum BDNF levels were collected from participants. Linear regression analysis was performed to determine the association between modifiable factors and serum BDNF level.Results: A significant association was found between sedentary activity level and lower serum BDNF levels (Beta coefficient = – 2.49, 95% confidence interval [CI] – 4.70, – 0.28, p = 0.028). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that this association held for psychiatric inpatients but not for community controls; it also held in females (Beta coefficient = – 3.18, 95% CI – 6.29, – 0.07, p = 0.045) but not in males (Beta coefficient = – 1.42, 95% CI – 4.61, 1.78, p = 0.383). Antidepressant use had a significantly different association between male (Beta coefficient = 3.20, 95% CI 0.51, 5.88, p = 0.020) and female subgroups (Beta coefficient = – 3.10, 95% CI – 5.75, – 0.46, p = 0.022). No significant association was found between other factors and serum BDNF.Conclusion: Sedentary activity level may lead to lower serum BDNF levels in individuals with psychiatric diagnoses. Background: Minimal data is available on the prevalence and correlates of hypertension and prehypertension in Dubai. The study aims to measure the prevalence of hypertension and pre-hypertension and the associated socio-demographic characteristics, behavioral risk factors and comorbidities among the adult population of Dubai.Methods: This study used data from the Dubai Household Health Survey, 2019. A cross-sectional population survey based on a complex stratified cluster random design. The total eligible sample included 2530 adults (18+). Sociodemographic and behavioral factors were considered as independent covariates. The main study outcome variables, pre-hypertension and hypertension, were ordinal, with normotension as the reference group.Results: The overall prevalence of hypertension in adults was 32.5% (38.37% in males and 16.66% in females). Prehypertension was prevalent in 29.8% of adults in Dubai (28.85% in males and 32.31% in females). The multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that age groups, gender, occupation, and high Body Mass Index were significantly associated with a higher risk of hypertension at the level of P < 0.05. No clear trend toward a higher correlation of hypertension was noted with the increase in age, except after the age of 50 years. Males were five- times more likely to be hypertensive than females. Participants enrolled in skilled and service works had a five times higher risk of hypertension, compared with the reference group (professionals). Obese subjects had a 5.47-times greater correlation of hypertension compared with normal-weight subjects. Physically active individuals were less likely to develop hypertension. For the correlates with prehypertension in the present analysis, skilled and service workers and those working in elementary jobs had a higher risk of prehypertension, compared with the reference group (professionals) Individuals with a status of overweight were associated with a higher prevalence of prehypertension compared with people of normal weight.Conclusions: This study showed a high prevalence of prehypertension and hypertension among adults in Dubai. Some socio-demographic and behavioral risk factors were correlated with prehypertension and hypertension among the studied population. Background: Little is known regarding the role of gender as a possible modulator in determining the associations between lifestyle risk factors and depression in older adults.Objectives: This study examined whether gender modulates the relationship between depression and lifestyle risk factors in Korean adults aged 65 years and older (n = 3700).Methods: Data were obtained from the 2016 and 2018 Korea National Health and Examination Survey. The primary outcome was depression, assessed with the patient health questionnaire-9. As exposures, smoking habits, at-risk alcohol consumption, and physical inactivity were assessed with a standardized questionnaire. In addition, mean adequacy ratio (MAR) as an indicator of overall nutritional inadequacy was assessed with dietary intakes of macro- and micronutrients.Results: In men only, either two or three and more risk factors were significantly associated with higher depression risk (OR (95% confidence interval, CI) = 2.886 (1.003-8.299) and OR (95% CI) = 3.109 (1.064-9.097), respectively). In women only, either two or three and more risk factors were also significantly associated with higher depression risk (OR (95% CI) = 1.505 (1.067-2.124) and OR (95% CI) = 2.828 (1.527-5.239), respectively). In particular, the presence of smoking habits and MAR were the major determinants of depression (OR (95% CI) = 1.835 (1.09-3.10) and OR (95% CI) = 1.585 (1.125-2.233), respectively) in women only. Finally, a moderation analysis with the Hayes PROCESS Macro showed a significant moderating effect of gender (β (95% CI) = 0.633 (0.206 ~ 1.060)) on the relationship between risk factors and depression. In addition, the slope of the relationship was much steeper in women than in men.Conclusion: Current findings suggest that lifestyle risk factors are more closely associated with depression risk in women than in men. Objective: to evaluate the behavioral risk factors of the workers of the primary oil refining workshop with the aim of using them as a tool for substantiating management decisions and forming vectors of preventive measures.Materials and methods: the method of active survey investigated the prevalence of behavioral risk factors among operators in two age groups (20 – 35 and 36 – 60 years old).Results: the main vectors of behavioral risks for operators of different age groups were established: lack of motor activity, smoking, low medical activity, low perception of behavioral risks. Violations of lifestyle are predominantly combined (violations by 2 – 4 indicators). For older operators are more characterized by low motor and medical activity, disturbances in diet, an overestimation of the degree of influence of environmental and occupational factors on health when the significance of individual behavior is underestimated.Conclusions: Social policy at the enterprise should take into account the main vectors of behavioral risks, lower motivation and the implementation of a healthy style of behavior typical of older workers.

Abstract Background This study was conducted with the aim of developing a standard and valid questionnaire to evaluate the behavioral factors affecting musculoskeletal disorders among adolescent students based on the educational and ecological diagnosis phase of the PRECEDE model. Methods Based on the PRECEDE model and by using available resources and a panel of experts, a reservoir of items was proposed. The content validity of the questions was measured using content validity ratio (CVR) and content validity index (CVI). 400 Iranian first-year female high school students completed the questionnaire. The construct validity was assessed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The reliability of the questionnaire was evaluated using Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Results The age range of study students was 13.69 ± 0.86 years. The final developed questionnaire included 25 items in three dimensions: knowledge (9 items), attitude (10 items) and enabling factors (6 items). The mean scores of CVI and CVR were 0.97 and 0.92, respectively. The results of CFA confirmed the three-factor structure of the questionnaire. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficients of the dimensions of knowledge, attitude and enabling factors were 0.65, 0.80 and 0.71, respectively. Conclusions The present questionnaire had appropriate psychometric properties and could be used as a valid tool in evaluating the factors affecting the development of musculoskeletal disorders among adolescent students.

Abstract Background Prevention and control of cardiometabolic conditions and cardiovascular disease (CVD) in China may contribute to sustainable CVD reduction globally, given the fact that one-fifth of the worldwide population is in China. Knowing the distribution of behavioral risk factors (e.g., smoking and physical inactivity), especially at a national level in China, would be extremely relevant to the field of public health and CVD prevention. The objectives of this study were to investigate the nationwide prevalence of obesity, smoking, heavy drinking, and physical inactivity in Chinese adults, and further explore whether cardiometabolic conditions would modify the distribution of behavioral risk factors. Methods This population-based study is based on the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (2011–2012), including 17,302 adults (≥45 years, mean age 59.67 years, female 51.66%) from 25 provinces in China. Data on demographics, lifestyle factors, health status and history of diseases were collected via structured interviews and laboratory tests. Smoking, heavy drinking, obesity, and physical inactivity were defined following standard guidelines. We performed descriptive analysis and logistic regressions in this study. Results The overall prevalence of heavy drinking, obesity, current smoking, and physical inactivity among middle-aged and older adults was 7.23% (95% confidence interval 6.53—7.29%), 11.53% (10.43—12.62%), 27.46% (26.30—28.62%), and 44.06% (41.19—46.92%), respectively. The prevalence varied between rural and urban areas as well as among geographic areas, with higher prevalence in the Northern and Northeastern regions. Heavy drinking and obesity were significantly associated with incident hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol; while current smoking was significantly associated with incident hypertension. Compared with healthy individuals, participants who self-reported a diagnosis of hypertension, high cholesterol, or diabetes were less likely to smoke currently and drink alcohol heavily, but more likely to be physically inactive and obese. Conclusions Among Chinese middle-aged and older adults, the prevalence of behavioral risk factors varies by geographic region. Further effort is required to improve physical activity and fitness for Chinese adults, especially those with cardiometabolic conditions.

Abstract Background To assess: (a) cancer treatment in prostate cancer survivors (PCS) by age at diagnosis (ADx) and prostate cancer (PC) aggressiveness; (b) potential impact on PC mortality; and (c) these results in the context of environmental/behavioral risk factors on PCS in Pennsylvania. Methods Prostate cancer survivors ages ≥40 years were identified from the 2004‐2014 Pennsylvania Cancer Registry (PCR). Demographic/clinical descriptors and PC treatment were extracted from PCR. Prostate cancer aggressiveness was defined by clinical/pathologic Gleason score and tumor stage. Logistic and Cox regression analyses tested associations between treatment received and PC‐specific mortality. County‐level data from the Pennsylvania BRFSS were used to estimate cancer‐related behavioral risk factors (eg, smoking, physical inactivity, fruit/vegetable consumption [FV], alcohol use) and used as covariates. Results There were 90 694 PCS ages 40‐105 years (mean age = 66.19 years, SD = 9.25) included. Most were non‐Hispanic white men (83%). Prostate cancer survivors ≥75 years were least likely to receive any treatment but men ages 65‐74 were more likely to receive combined therapies (OR = 1.47; 95% CI 1.28, 1.69) vs PCS ages 40‐54 years, controlling for covariates. Prostate cancer survivors 55‐75+ with aggressive PC who received any treatment vs no definitive treatment had significantly reduced mortality. Men from counties with high obesity and smoking rates were significantly less likely to receive any treatment than men living in counties with lower rates of these risk factors. Prostate cancer survivors who lived in counties with high rates of physical inactivity and had high rates of sufficient FV consumption were slightly more likely to receive cancer treatment vs no definitive treatment compared to men who lived in counties with high rates of physical activity and lower FV consumption. Conclusions We observed a general age‐related decline in receipt of treatment. Prostate cancer survivors ages ≥75 years were significantly less likely to get any cancer treatment compared to younger PCS. However, most men with more aggressive disease who received any treatment had greatly reduced PC mortality, regardless of age. Considering environmental/behavioral risk factors may attenuate PC risk and inform treatment options.

Abstract Background Although sex workers are considered a key population in the HIV epidemic in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), less consideration has been given to female bar workers (FBW), whose primary occupation is not sex work but who often engage in transactional sex. Understanding FBWs’ risk profiles is central to designing targeted HIV prevention interventions for them. This systematic review describes the socio-demographic characteristics and risk factors for HIV transmission among FBWs in SSA. Methods We searched six databases: PubMed, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Popline, Embase and additionally the World Health Organization’s WHOLIS database for grey literature between July and September 2017. Inclusion criteria were reporting (1) primary socio-demographic or behavioral data; on (2) women who sold or delivered drinks to clients; (3) in establishments serving alcohol; (4) in SSA. We excluded studies not presenting separate data on FBWs. We extracted quantitative and qualitative data from the selected studies and conducted a qualitative synthesis of findings. Results We found 4565 potentially eligible articles, including duplicates. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, we retained 19 articles. FBWs often migrated from rural to urban areas due to economic need or social marginalization. They began bar-based transactional sex due to low wages, peer pressure and to increase financial independence. FBWs had high HIV risk awareness but low agency to negotiate condom use, particularly with regular partners or when offered higher prices for condomless sex. FBWs were also vulnerable to violence and stigmatization. Conclusions FBWs are a vulnerable population for HIV infection. Despite social stigmatization and elevated risk of contracting STIs, bar work remains attractive because it enables unskilled women to both, make a living and maintain some independence. FBWs face HIV-related risk factors at the individual, community and societal level and may benefit from biomedical, behavioral and structural interventions.

Abstract Background The lack of adequate data on the oral health status among the Egyptians is a challenging barrier for the assessment and improvement of oral health needs. Objectives The aim of this study was to collect data on oral health status among a sample of Egyptian rural population and to assess the possible role of the socio-demographic, socio-economic, and behavioral risk factors on the status of the present dentition (the pattern of tooth loss and edentulism). Materials and methods Data was collected from 530 patients with age ranged from 20 to 70 years using a modified World Health Organization (WHO) questionnaire. The questionnaire included information about oral health status, socio-demographic (age and sex), socio-economic (educational levels and income), and behavioral factors (smoking and oral hygiene measures). A complete intra- and extraoral examination and free dental health care services were provided by a team of qualified dental specialists from National Research Centre (NRC).
