An association between exposure to arsenic (As) and neurologic and behavioral effects has been reported in some studies, but no systematic review is available of the evidence linking As in drinking water and neurobehavioral effects after consideration of study quality and potential confounding, with focus on low-level circumstances of exposure. We conducted a systematic review and reported it in compliance with the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines, through a search of the databases PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Embase. We included in the review the studies reporting results based on exposure from drinking water in humans. Endpoints were heterogeneous across studies, so we classified them into eight broad domains and developed an ad-hoc system to evaluate their methodological quality, based on three tiers. It was not possible to conduct meta-analysis because of the heterogeneity in exposure assessment and in the definition and assessment of outcomes. The search identified 18,518 articles. After elimination of duplicates and irrelevant articles, we retained 106 articles which reported results on As exposure and neurobehavioral effects, of which 22 reported risk estimates from exposure in drinking water (six among adults and 16 among children). None of the studies was conducted blindly. Among the studies in adults, two, which were conducted in highly exposed populations, were classified as high quality. These two studies were broadly consistent in reporting an association between exposure to As and decline in cognitive function; however, they provide no evidence of an association for exposure below 75 μg/L. The four lower-quality studies were based on populations with low exposure; these studies reported associations with inconsistent outcomes, few of which remained statistically significant after adjustment for multiple comparisons. Among the five high-quality studies of children, one reported an association between As in drinking water and intellectual function, whereas none of the other studies reported an association with different neurobehavioral indicators, after adjusting for potential confounders and multiple comparisons. Out of seven intermediate-quality studies, three reported an association with cognitive function or other outcomes; but sources of bias were not adequately controlled. The remaining studies were negative. The four low-quality studies did not contribute to the overall evidence because of methodological limitations. Our assessment of the available literature showed a lack of evidence for a causal association between exposure to As in drinking water and neurobehavioral effects. To clarify whether such an association exists, further studies prospectively evaluating changes in both the concentration of As in drinking water during the life course, and neurobehavioral outcomes, as well as appropriately controlling for potential confounders, are needed. Incorporating lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus) flour can replace and complement the content of proteins, macronutrients, and micronutrients, which may be related to curative effects for malnutrition. Therefore, an in vivo approach was undertaken to demonstrate the effect of lima bean flour on cognitive function and growth recovery in malnourished rats. Four groups of male Wistar rats were included in this study: The control group (N), MAL, MAL+25% LB group, and MAL+50% LB group. Morphometric analysis was used to assess growth recovery. Cognitive tests included Y-Maze, Novel Object Recognition Test (NORT), and Water Maze by Morris (MWM) test, and histopathological examination of the brain sections was conducted on the cerebral cortex and hippocampus by hematoxylin and eosin stains. The biological activity prediction of lima bean active compounds was analyzed by the PASS server using an in-silico study. This study found that lima bean flour increased body weight, length, tail increment, ear length, and leg length in malnourished rats at 50% lima bean concentration, similar to the control group. Lima bean flour showed neuroprotective capabilities by reversing the effects of malnutrition on the cerebral cortex and hippocampus by lowering the percentage of degenerated cells and increasing cognitive and behavioral. Eight bioactive compounds in lima bean extract have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antibacterial properties. Centella asiatica (L.) Urb. (Apiaceae) is a renowned medicinal plant being used in the Ayurvedic system for its pharmacological effects on the central nervous system such as rejuvenating, sedative, anxiolytic and memory-enhancing properties. The present study was designed to investigate the effect of Centella asiatica (CA) extract on inflammatory responses induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and resulting changes in cognitive behavior. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups as control, LPS, CA and LPS + CA. The treatments with LPS (5 mg/kg) were intraperitoneally (i.p) injected on day 4 and CA ethanol extract (200 mg/kg) were given orally for 14 days. Morris Water Maze (MWM) test was performed to assess spatial learning and memory performance. Acute oral toxicity of the extract at the highest dose of 5000 mg/kg was also conducted. Single administration of LPS was able to significantly elicit learning and memory impairment (p <.05) when compared to the control groups. Treatment with CA significantly improved the impaired learning ability in which the LPS + CA rats took the shortest time and route to find the hidden platform (15.85 ± 2.68 s (p <.001); 352.43 ± 88.10 cm (p <.001) on day 5) and induced differential cytokine responses in the blood. No mortality and no significant variation in the body and organ weights between the control and the treated group was observed after 14 days of acute toxicity study. Hematological analysis and biochemical parameters revealed no toxic effects of the extract. Pathologically, neither gross abnormalities nor histopathological changes were observed. Centella asiatica extract exhibited significant learning and memory enhancement potential in animal model. Hence, indicating its putative preventive therapeutic effects in neuroinflammation related diseases. A single dose of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) (5 mg/kg) administered systemically to mimic the consequences of LPS-induced inflammatory responses was able to affect some behavioral modification of spatial memory at the time point of study. The study showed that the learning capability during the training trial was restored or ameliorated with the pre-emptive treatment of Centella asiatica extract (200 mg/kg). The study was conducted to evaluate the emotional, cognitive and behavioral effects among COVID 19 survivors. The data was collected from April 2020 to June 2021. Simple face to face and online data collection methods were employed, a questionnaire using likart type questions was used. For data collection, five point Likert scale questionnaire was designed according to the objectives of the study. The questionnaire included questions related to cognitive, emotional and behavioral aspects of the COVID-19 survivors. Additionally, it also explored the perceptions of the participants about the disease. A total of 90 participants were recruited in this study. All these had confirmed diagnosis of COVID 19 on Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) positive on nasal swab. The findings of this study indicate that most of the covid-19 survivors feel weakness, and depression after recovering from this viral disease. A considerable number of COVID 19 survivors experienced loss taste and smell for a prolonged period. According to their perception social gatherings were responsible for spread of the disease thus they strongly agreed upon lockdown strategy adopted in many countries.

Offline retailers increasingly use location-based coupons to target consumers in their vicinity in real-time. The rationale for the use of location-based coupons is that geographic proximity increases the relevance for consumers and, thus, the effectiveness of these campaigns. Two key interface-specific aspects of location-based coupon applications that influence their effectiveness are 1) the provision of distance information and 2) the distance-based ranking of coupons. The aim of this paper is to study and quantify the impact of these two key aspects of interface design on the effectiveness of location-based coupons. We conduct a randomized field experiment with 399,913 observations, including 3,499 different coupon promotions offered by 3,930 different stores located in 2,392 ZIP code areas in a large Western European country. Our results show that the most effective interface design for location-based coupons is based on a distance-based ranking. Furthermore, we find significant differences in the impact of distance and display rank based on the interface design and the actual geographic location of users. Our results thus contribute to the understanding of consumers’ behavioral responses to location-based advertising and provide important implications for the interface-design of location-based advertising applications. The adoption of environmentally friendly farmland conservation techniques by farmers is an important way to effectively curb agricultural surface pollution and promote the conservation of farmland quality. Based on 425 farmers’ in-depth interview data, a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis method was used to construct a psychological cognition (farmers’ awareness and willingness to participate)—external context (organizational linkages and government regulation)—behavioral effect model to reveal the conditional configuration and multivariate paths of psychological cognition and external contextual factors influencing farmers’ behavioral effects on the adoption of environmentally friendly farmland conservation technologies. The results show that individual behavioral decision factors do not influence the behavioral effects of farmers. The results show that individual behavioral decision factors are not necessary to drive the effective adoption of environmentally friendly farmland conservation technologies and that multiple decision factors interact to form three sets of configurations that enhance the behavioral effectiveness of farmers, summarized as the willingness-to-participate dominant model, the internal and external constraints dominant model, and the external context dominant model.

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) can have serious impacts on both ecosystem services and human health, and several mitigation techniques have been developed to control them. Ultrasonic sound sources can disrupt developing algal mats, causing concern that the acoustic energy emitted from these devices may have deleterious health or behavioral effects on nearby fishes. We conducted field and laboratory studies on the effects of ultrasonic control devices on resident fishes. Field observations in Oneida Lake, New York, of the behavioral response of fish to the ultrasonic sound were conducted in shallow water using line transects, and in deeper water using hydroacoustics. No avoidance behavior was detected in either shallow or deep water while the ultrasonic devices were operating. Under controlled laboratory conditions, 7 recreationally or ecologically important fish species and local wild tadpoles were exposed to sound produced by the ultrasonic control devices for a 2 week period. No behavioral effects were noted while fish and tadpoles were monitored during the exposure interval. Finally, no significant or harmful histological or morphological alterations to the skin, fins, gills, or internal organs were observed on either fish or tadpoles when specimens were examined after the 2 week exposure period. Methods: A literature review was performed relevant to the behavioral effects of PMS and PMDD and symptomatology. Nutritional and lifestyle interventions with evidence were analyzed and reviewed. Results: Studies indicated that intestinal dysbiosis, the Western diet, inadequacies in omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin D, vitamin B6, iron, sun exposure, smoking, alcohol, and physical activity are linked to symptomatology associated with PMS and PMDD. Conclusion: Addressing micronutrient and essential fatty acid deficiencies, intestinal dysbiosis, smoking avoidance, limiting alcohol consumption, promoting physical activity and sunlight exposure, and providing education on PMS and PMDD may improve symptoms associated with these conditions. Background: The COVID-19 pandemic poses enormous social challenges, especially during lockdown. People with cognitive decline and their caregivers are particularly at risk of lockdown consequences. Objective: To investigate psychosocial effects in (pre-)dementia patients and caregivers during second lockdown and compare effects between first and second lockdown. Methods: We included n = 511 (pre-)dementia patients and n = 826 caregivers from the Amsterdam Dementia Cohort and via Alzheimer Nederland. All respondents completed a self-designed survey on psychosocial effects of COVID-19. We examined relations between experienced support and psychosocial and behavioral symptoms using logistic regression. In a subset of patients and caregivers we compared responses between first and second lockdown using generalized estimating equation (GEE). Results: The majority of patients (≥58%) and caregivers (≥60%) reported that family and friends, hobbies, and music helped them cope. Support from family and friends was strongly related to less negative feelings in patients (loneliness: OR = 0.3[0.1–0.6]) and caregivers (loneliness: OR = 0.2[0.1–0.3]; depression: OR = 0.4[0.2–0.5]; anxiety: OR = 0.4[0.3–0.6]; uncertainty: OR = 0.3[0.2–0.5]; fatigue: OR = 0.3[0.2–0.4]; stress: OR = 0.3[0.2–0.5]). In second lockdown, less psychosocial and behavioral symptoms were reported compared to first lockdown (patients; e.g., anxiety: 22% versus 13%, p = 0.007; apathy: 27% versus 8%, p < 0.001, caregivers; e.g., anxiety: 23% versus 16%, p = 0.033; patient's behavioral problems: 50% versus 35%, p < 0.001). Patients experienced more support (e.g., family and friends: 52% versus 93%, p < 0.001; neighbors: 28% versus 66%, p < 0.001). Conclusion: During second lockdown, patients and caregivers adapted to challenges posed by lockdown, as psychosocial and behavioral effects decreased, while patients experienced more social support compared to first lockdown. Abundance estimation, for both human and animal populations, informs policy decisions and population management. Capture-recapture and multiple sources data share a common structure; the population can be partially enumerated and individuals are identifiable. Consequently, the analytical methods were developed simultaneously. However, whilst ecological models have been developed to describe highly complex, biologically realistic scenarios, for example modeling population changes through time and combining different forms of data, multiple systems estimation has changed comparatively less so. In this paper we provide a brief description of the historical development of ecological and epidemiological capture-recapture and discuss the associated underlying differences that have led to model divergence. Air pollution is associated with several severe physical, behavioral, and psychological health risks and glitches. Air pollution has been linked to 11 million premature deaths in Pakistan, out of the total 153 million premature deaths worldwide. Air pollution is continuously growing as a threatening challenge for Pakistan. Keeping this in view, the current study was designed to assess air pollution in terms of air quality index (AQI), particulate matters (PM2.5 and PM10), SO2, NO2, and O3 over six districts of Malakand division, Northern Pakistan. The second part of the study appraised the associated self-reported effects of air pollution on Pakistani students and the practices, perceptions, and awareness of the students regarding air pollution through a closed-ended questionnaire, administered to 4100 students. The first section of the questionnaire was focused on the physical effects associated with air pollution; the second section was focused on air pollution–linked behavior and psychology; the third portion was focused on perception and awareness of the subjects, whereas the final section was focused on practices and concerns of the subjects regarding air pollution. The students reported that exposure to air pollution significantly affected their physical health, behavior, and psychology. The subjects were aware of the different air pollutants and health complications associated with air pollution, and therefore had adopted preventive measures. It was concluded that air pollution had adverse impacts on the physical and psychological health of the respondents, which consequently altered their behavior. Mass awareness, proper mitigating plan, suitable management, and implementation of strict environmental laws are suggested before the air gets further polluted and becomes life-threatening. Antidepressants are extensively used to treat the symptoms of depression in humans, and the environmentally discharged drugs potentially threaten aquatic organisms. In this study, the acute toxic effects of fluoxetine (FLX) were investigated in two aquatic organisms, the freshwater polyp (Hydra magnipapillata) and Javanese medaka (Oryzias javanicus). The median lethal concentration (LC50) of FLX in H. magnipapillata was 3.678, 3.082, and 2.901 mg/L after 24, 48, and 72 h, respectively. Morphological observations of the FLX-exposed H. magnipapillata showed that 1.5 mg/L FLX induced the contraction of the tentacles and body column. The LC50 of FLX in O. javanicus was 2.046, 1.936, 1.532, and 1.237 mg/L after 24, 48, 72, and 96 h, respectively. Observation of the behavior of the FLX-exposed fish showed that FLX reduced their swimming performance at a minimum concentration of 10 µg/L. The half-maximal effective concentration (EC50) of FLX for swimming behavior in O. javanicus was 0.135, 0.108, and 0.011 mg/L after 12, 24, and 96 h, respectively. Transcriptomic analyses indicated that FLX affects various physiological and metabolic processes in both species. FLX exposure induced oxidative stress, reproductive deficiency, abnormal pattern formation, DNA damage, and neurotransmission disturbance in H. magnipapillata, whereas it adversely affected O. javanicus by inducing oxidative stress, DNA damage, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and mRNA instability. Neurotransmission-based behavioral changes and endocrine disruption were strongly suspected in the FLX-exposed fish. These results suggest that FLX affects the behavior and metabolic regulation of aquatic organisms.

Purpose: The study aims to analyze the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on house prices. Design/methodology/approach: The authors start by discussing the possibility that house price indexes may not fully incorporate the effects of the pandemic as of yet. Against the background of the pandemic, the authors then analyze economic and behavioral effects affecting house prices. The authors also discuss how the linkages between tourism and house prices have been affected. The authors further present evidence of an emerging shift in preferences from urban locations to more peripheral ones. Findings: The authors report variance in the evolution of house prices across countries at the onset of the pandemic, with locations depending heavily on tourism showing slower price appreciation while appreciation has firmed in other places. The authors argue that the resilience of house prices is not only because of the low-interest rate environment and government efforts to support firms and households, but also behavioral factors. In some locations, the price of condominiums has declined relative to the price of detached houses. This could indicate that wealthier households are seeking more space and larger units as a result of the crisis. There is also evidence of a downward pressure on rents, leading to increased price–rent ratios in the USA. Originality/value: By considering both economic and behavioral factors, this paper provides for a better understanding of the resilience and realignment of house prices at the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic. • Viewers suffer emotionally from breakups of fictional media characters. • These parasocial breakups can be temporary, uncertain, or definite. • Viewers with strong parasocial relationships suffer the most from breakups. • Viewers choose to watch other shows when experiencing parasocial breakups. Viewers form enduring bonds, or parasocial relationships (PSRs), with media characters. They suffer breakup distress when such relationships are dissolved and show emotional reactions similar to those from the dissolution of social relationships. Alongside definite and temporary breakups, this paper introduces the term uncertain breakup , and the three breakup types are analyzed and compared. In a two-survey study with viewers of five shows (Emily in Paris, Bridgerton, Peaky Blinders, Shadow and Bone, Never Have I Ever), the three parasocial breakup types were analyzed in Study I with independent samples and with dependent samples in Study II, which also considered the behavioral effects of parasocial breakups. The results show that PSRs positively predict viewers' temporary, uncertain, and definite breakup distress and subsequent PSRs after a breakup. The three types of breakup distress differ regarding, for example, their moderation of viewers' level of loneliness or their behavioral effects. Abstract. In terms (conditions) of socio-economic crisis, there are changes in the algorithms of acceptance of the investment, financial, management, and other decisions at various levels, which requires the emphasis on the patterns of behavior of participants in financial and economic processes in conditions of risk and uncertainty. The article aims to review the key postulates of behavioral economics, substantiate the possibility and feasibility of applying the theoretical foundations of behavioral economics as the latest model of the irrational behavior of financial and economic relations in practice management at regional and local levels. The theoretical foundations of behavioral economics are revealed, the preconditions of origin (scientific bases, technological level, socio-economic bases) and stages of formation are determined. The interdisciplinary nature of behavioral economics as a science-based on the provisions of economics, psychology, sociology, neurobiology, and studies of socio-economic problems using non-traditional methods and approaches is proved. The study found that the growing trend of the practical application of behavioral economics at the regional and local levels is associated with the possibility of taking into account, except objective factors, irrational behavior of participants in financial and economic processes in conditions of risk and uncertainty. Behavioral differences between «economic man» and Humans are substantiated. It is established that people have such behavioral features as presumed irrationality; limited cognitive skills, emotions, morals, and social norms; limited selfishness; inconsistency (variability) of preferences. The expediency of studying economic relations at the regional and local levels on the basis of behavioral economics is justified by the possibility of explaining the abnormal behavior of economic agents in conditions of uncertainty and risk, which encourages the search for new behavioral strategies of financial and economic relations. Introduction: Healthy elderly, mild cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease populations have been among the most affected in the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic due to the direct effects of the virus, and numerous indirect effects now emerge and will have to be carefully assessed over time. Methods: This article reviews the main articles that have been published so far about the direct and indirect effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on these particularly fragile populations. Results: The pandemic associated to COVID-19 has shifted most of the health resources to the emergency area and has consequently left the three main medical areas dealing with the elderly population (oncology, time-dependent diseases and degenerative disease) temporarily "uncovered". In the phase following the emergency, it will be crucial to guarantee to each area the economic and organizational resources to quickly return to the level of support of the prepandemic state. Conclusions: The emergency phase represented a significant occasion of discussion on the possibilities of telemedicine which will inevitably become increasingly important, but all the limits of its use in the elderly population have to be considered. In the post-lockdown recovery phase, alongside the classic medical evaluation, the psychological evaluation must become even more important for doctors caring about people with cognitive decline as well as with their caregivers. Methiopropamine is a structural analog of methamphetamine that is categorized as a novel psychoactive substance. It primarily acts as a norepinephrine–dopamine reuptake inhibitor and, secondarily, as a serotonin reuptake inhibitor. In humans, methiopropamine induces stimulation and alertness and increases focus and energy. However, significant side effects are reported, such as tachycardia, anxiety, panic attacks, perspiration, headache, and difficulty in breathing. To date, little data is available regarding its pharmacodynamic effects, thereby we aimed to investigate the acute in vivo effects induced by this drug on sensorimotor responses, body temperature, pain thresholds, motor activity, and cardiovascular and respiratory systems in CD-1 male mice. We selected a range of doses that correspond to the whole range of human reported use, in order to evaluate the threshold of adverse effects presentation. This study demonstrates that methiopropamine acts as a dopaminergic and noradrenergic stimulating drug and that the highest doses (10–30 mg/kg) impair the visual placing response, facilitate the acoustic and tactile response, induce hypothermia, increase mechanical and thermal analgesia, stimulate locomotor activity, induce motor stereotypies, and strongly affected cardiovascular and respiratory parameters, increasing heart rate, breath rate, and blood pressure but reducing oxygen saturation. On the contrary, lower doses do not show any of those effects. We hypothesize that there is a range of doses that do enhance performance but do not seem hazardous to users: this gap could induce the perception of safety and increase the abuser population. To tackle climate change, greater public engagement is called for in actions that fall under the umbrella of environmentally oriented anticonsumption (EOA), in addition to environmentally oriented consumption (EOC) ones. This study examines potential behavioral effects on EOA and EOC actions in response to climate change, by placing attention on the EOA versus EOC distinction, as well as the behavioral domain and frequency of the selected behavioral outcomes and predictors. Multilevel analysis is conducted on a large‐scale, European pooled dataset (N = 137,097 respondents) combined with secondary country data at the societal level (N = 30 countries). The findings provide overall evidence for positive behavioral effects or spillovers on EOA and EOC behaviors in response to climate change, while emphasizing also the need to account for the specificity of different proenvironmental actions. Also, the findings show that positive spillovers are more likely among actions within the same EOA/EOC path of action, pertaining to the same behavioral category (i.e., intra‐domain, rather than inter‐domain spillovers), and having similar behavioral frequency characteristics (e.g., among non‐daily actions). The findings reported here improve understanding of the behavioral mechanisms behind environmental spillovers, for less‐researched EOA (and EOC) outcomes, in response to climate change, and cross‐nationally. The authors demonstrate that marketing actions, such as pricing, can alter the actual efficacy of products to which they are applied. These placebo effects stem from activation of expectancies about the efficacy of the product, a process that appears not to be conscious. In three experiments, the authors show that consumers who pay a discounted price for a product (e.g., an energy drink thought to increase mental acuity) may derive less actual benefit from consuming this product (e.g., they are able to solve fewer puzzles) than consumers who purchase and consume the exact same product but pay its regular price. The studies consistently support the role of expectancies in mediating this placebo effect. This article examines how consumers' nonconsciousness expectations influence their opinion on the relationship between the price and quality of products. Even when the price paid for a product has no relationship to its quality, consumers' nonconscious beliefs about the price-quality relationship change their experience with the product. In marketing, a placebo might be a brand that claims to have properties that it does not actually possess and, through such claims, changes the consumer's behavior. In the study, the importance of motivation is reported as a driver of marketing placebo effects. Motivation has also been shown to play a role in medical placebo studies such that when people want the physical symptoms, a placebo effect will manifest.

Toluene is a widely misused solvent that causes a variety of behavioral effects in both humans and animals. Preclinical and clinical research has provided evidence that toluene inhalation produces psychoactive effects similar to those caused by other Central Nervous System depressant drugs, but little is known about the consequences of inhaling solvents other than toluene that are also present in commercial products. As part of this research project, we studied the effects of hydrocarbon solvents chemically related to toluene on anxiety-like behavior, passive-avoidance learning, nociception, motor coordination and social interaction. We tested independent groups of adolescent male Wistar rats in the burying behavior task, step through avoidance learning task, hot plate test, shock threshold test, social interaction or rotarod tests after a 30 min exposure to either cyclohexane, benzene, toluene or m-xylene (2000 to 8000 ppm). Control animals breathed only air. Benzene, toluene and m-xylene produced anxiolytic-like actions, impaired learning, caused antinociception and decreased social interaction in a concentration-dependent manner. Locomotor coordination was impaired only with 8000 ppm m-xylene and 8000 ppm toluene. Cyclohexane had no effect on any of the behavioral tasks. Our data suggest that the aromatic ring is critical for solvents to produce a wide variety of behavioral effects. • Benzene, toluene and m-xylene have concentration-dependent anxiolytic-like actions. • The three aromatic solvents cause similar learning impairment and antinociception. • Benzene, toluene and m-xylene similarly decrease social interaction in rats. • Cyclohexane has no effect on any of the behavioral tasks. • We suggest that the benzene ring is critical to produce solvents behavioral effects. Reported off‐target effects of antihistamines in humans draw interest in ecotoxicity testing of first‐ and second‐generation antihistamines, the latter of which have fewer reported side effects in humans. Because antihistamines are ionizable compounds, the pH influences uptake and toxicity and thus is highly relevant when conducting toxicity experiments. Zebrafish embryo toxicity tests were performed with the 3 first‐generation antihistamines ketotifen, doxylamine, and dimethindene and the 2 second‐generation antihistamines cetirizine and levocabastine at pH 5.5, 7.0, and 8.0. We detected effects on survival, phenotype, swimming activity, and heart rate for 4 antihistamines with the exception of levocabastine, which did not show any lethal or sublethal effects. When compared to lethal concentrations, effect concentrations neither of phenotype malformation nor of swimming activity or heart rate deviated by more than a factor of 10 from lethal concentrations, indicating that all sublethal effects were fairly nonspecific. First‐generation antihistamines are weak bases and showed decreasing external effect concentrations with increasing neutral fraction, accompanied by increased uptake in the fish embryo. As a result, internal effect concentrations were independent from external pH. The pH‐dependent toxicity originates from speciation‐dependent uptake, with neutral species taken up in higher amounts than the corresponding ionic species. Cetirizine, which shifts from a zwitterionic to an anionic state in the measured pH range, did not show any pH‐dependent uptake or toxicity. Highlights • We study the impact of glyphosate product concentration levels on farmers' glyphosate usage behavior. • Farmers applied more concentrated products at significantly higher dosage rates. • Late adopters and smaller farms were more likely to resort to habit in choosing application rates. • Label confusion, habit, or error likely contributed to higher application rates. Abstract People often ignore or misunderstand information that would help them make better decisions. For products that differ by concentration level, a critical choice concerns the correct dosage rate. We study the effects of changing glyphosate product concentration levels on farmers' glyphosate usage behavior. Glyphosate is the world's most widely used herbicide. After glyphosate went off patent in 2000, product variants with higher concentration levels entered the market. Using detailed farm-level glyphosate use data in U.S. corn and soybeans over the period 1998–2011, we estimate the impact of product concentration levels on glyphosate application rates. We control for prices and other sources of heterogeneity by means of individual and time fixed effects. Our findings indicate that increasing the baseline concentration level by 10% increases the application rate by nearly 6%, despite the fact that labels on more concentrated products provide instructions on how to correctly adjust dosage rates downwards. We attribute part of the concentration effect to rational behavior and part of it to label confusion and/or habit, with smaller farms and late adopters being more likely to resort to habit. A counterfactual simulation predicts that label confusion and/or habit was responsible for a 4.6% increase in total glyphosate use and an additional $59 million per year (4.7%) in glyphosate sellers' revenues. This is the first paper to provide findings on how candy placements in films influence children's (ages three to nine) selection behavior in real-life shopping situations. Furthermore, it offers insights into both influencing factors barely discussed in previous research and the underlying effect mechanisms. A field experiment was performed in natural viewing and shopping scenarios. For the first time, children aged 3 to 5 were incorporated. Results of multilevel and logistic regression moderation and mediation analyses show that the risk of selecting a placed product was more than nine times higher in the treatment group than in the control group, which was moderated by age: younger children were more likely to select the advertised products. Neither gender nor consumption habits affected the correlation. The time span between stimulus and choice tended to have an influence. Findings support the assumption of implicit persuasion processes via evaluative conditioning and, partially, mere-exposure-effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Several psychoactive drugs can evoke substance use disorders (SUD) in humans and animals, and these include psychostimulants, opioids, cannabinoids (CB), nicotine, and alcohol. The etiology, mechanistic processes, and the therapeutic options to deal with SUD are not well understood. The common feature of all abused drugs is that they increase dopamine (DA) neurotransmission within the mesocorticolimbic circuitry of the brain followed by the activation of DA receptors. D2 receptors were proposed as important molecular targets for SUD. The findings showed that D2 receptors formed heteromeric complexes with other GPCRs, which forced the addiction research area in new directions. In this review, we updated the view on the brain D2 receptor complexes with adenosine (A)2A receptors (A2AR) and discussed the role of A2AR in different aspects of addiction phenotypes in laboratory animal procedures that permit the highly complex syndrome of human drug addiction. We presented the current knowledge on the neurochemical in vivo and ex vivo mechanisms related to cocaine use disorder (CUD) and discussed future research directions for A2AR heteromeric complexes in SUD.

Many genes controlling neuronal development also regulate adult neurogenesis. We investigated in vivo the effect of Sonic hedgehog (Shh) signaling activation on patterning and neurogenesis of the hippocampus and behavior of Patched1 (Ptch1) heterozygous mice (Ptch1+/−). We demonstrated for the first time, that Ptch1+/− mice exhibit morphological, cellular and molecular alterations in the dentate gyrus (DG), including elongation and reduced width of the DG as well as deregulations at multiple steps during lineage progression from neural stem cells to neurons. By using stage-specific cellular markers, we detected reduction of quiescent stem cells, newborn neurons and astrocytes and accumulation of proliferating intermediate progenitors, indicative of defects in the dynamic transition among neural stages. Phenotypic alterations in Ptch1+/− mice were accompanied by expression changes in Notch pathway downstream components and TLX nuclear receptor, as well as perturbations in inflammatory and synaptic networks and mouse behavior, pointing to complex biological interactions and highlighting cooperation between Shh and Notch signaling in the regulation of neurogenesis.

Background: More than 200 million people worldwide are chronically exposed to arsenic. Arsenic is a known human carcinogen, and its carcinogenic and systemic toxicity have been extensively studied. By contrast, the developmental neurotoxicity of arsenic has been less well described. The aim of this review was to provide a comprehensive review of the developmental neurotoxicity of arsenic. Methods: We reviewed the published epidemiological and toxicological literature on the developmental neurotoxicity of arsenic. Results: Arsenic is able to gain access to the developing brain and cause neurotoxic effects. Animal models link prenatal and early postnatal exposure to reduction in brain weight, reductions in numbers of glia and neurons, and alterations in neurotransmitter systems. Animal and in vitro studies both suggest that oxidative stress may be a mechanism of arsenic neurotoxicity. Fifteen epidemiological studies indicate that early life exposure is associated with deficits in intelligence and memory. These effects may occur at levels of exposure below current safety guidelines, and some neurocognitive consequences may become manifest only later in life. Sex, concomitant exposures, and timing of exposure appear to modify the developmental neurotoxicity of arsenic. Four epidemiological studies failed to show behavioral outcomes of arsenic exposure. Conclusions: The published literature indicates that arsenic is a human developmental neurotoxicant. Ongoing and future prospective birth cohort studies will allow more precise definition of the developmental consequences of arsenic exposure in early life.

Odor sensation is a sensory modality of considerable significance in the foraging behavior and interactional organization of ants. In the food bait technology, smell is the basis of attraction, which, in turn, is the line of bait use and a key parameter for judging efficacy. Yet, the currently available baits possess low attractiveness to many ant pests. Hence, strategies to produce ant bait with increased attractiveness are needed. Despite evidence that coffee has a diverse aroma complex that affects the behavior of honey bees and ants, its attraction to house-invading ants has yet to be investigated. In a series of Y-tube olfactometer bioassays, we examined the behavioral responses of Tapinoma indicum (TI), Monomorium pharaonis (MP) and Solenopsis geminata (SG) to various coffee-induced odor stimuli, comprised of extracts from Arabica, Robusta and Liberica. All coffee extracts showed an influence on the behavior of TI, MP and SG workers, with Arabica showed the most significant influence to the tested ants. The workers of TI, MP and SG were more attracted to the odor of 0.01% Arabica extract (ONE), in comparison with 0.05% Arabica extract (TWO) or 0.10% Arabica extract (THREE). Arabica extract mixed with sugar (S) elicited a significant attraction from workers of all three species in a balanced competition with either unsweetened Arabica extract or water. These results indicated that coffee, particularly Arabica, was attractive to the foragers of TI, MP and SG, thus, the use of coffee as a novel stimulus agent seems plausible in ant bait development. BACKGROUND: Mole crickets (Neoscapteriscus spp.) consume turfgrasses and pasture grasses and uproot plants by their tunneling, which is detrimental to turf aesthetics and decreases forage quantity and quality. Insecticides are frequently used to prevent damage. In typical field trials, damage symptoms, not percent mortality or achieved level of control, are used to assess treatment efficacy. Here, however, laboratory tests assessed the direct effect of key insecticides on Neoscapteriscus mole cricket behavior. RESULTS: Mole crickets, Neoscapteriscus spp., were able to detect and avoid areas treated with fipronil [formulated product (FP)] and imidacloprid (FP). They tunneled less in sand treated with fipronil and avoided sand treated with fipronil and imidacloprid if given a choice. Mole crickets escaped areas treated with acephate, bifenthrin and fipronil. Bifenthrin and acephate caused increased tunneling during the first 90 min of observation. Fipronil and imidacloprid significantly reduced overall tunneling on treated areas. CONCLUSION: Tested insecticides elicited two types of behavioral changes in Neoscapteriscus mole crickets: increased locomotory activity and tunneling [acephate (organophosphate) and bifenthrin (pyrethroid)] and reduced spatial movement [fipronil (phenylpyrazole) and imidacloprid (neonicotinoid)]. Recent corporate governance guidelines have focused on the structure of the board of directors, with little recognition of the importance of director attendance at board and committee meetings. Director attendance is vital as prior studies show that director absences result in weaker monitoring of management and lower firm performance. This study examines whether directors learn from the attendance behavior of their board colleagues, thereby magnifying the scope and potential consequences of good or poor attendance practices. We find that director attendance is significantly positively related to their board colleagues attendance, including colleagues in the same firm and colleagues in other firms where the director holds other directorships. For policymakers, these results indicate that ongoing attention needs to be paid to the attendance practices of directors, with intervention required to ensure poor attendance practices do not become contagious. Adenosine receptors (AR) are a family of G-protein coupled receptors, comprised of four members, named A1, A2A, A2B, and A3 receptors, found widely distributed in almost all human body tissues and organs. To date, they are known to participate in a large variety of physiopathological responses, which include vasodilation, pain, and inflammation. In particular, in the central nervous system (CNS), adenosine acts as a neuromodulator, exerting different functions depending on the type of AR and consequent cellular signaling involved. In terms of molecular pathways and second messengers involved, A1 and A3 receptors inhibit adenylyl cyclase (AC), through Gi=o proteins, while A2A and A2B receptors stimulate it through Gs proteins. In the CNS, A1 receptors are widely distributed in the cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum, A2A receptors are localized mainly in the striatum and olfactory bulb, while A2B and A3 receptors are found at low levels of expression. In addition, AR are able to form heteromers, both among themselves (e.g., A1/A2A), as well as with other subtypes (e.g., A2A/D2), opening a whole range of possibilities in the field of the pharmacology of AR. Nowadays, we know that adenosine, by acting on adenosine A1 and A2A receptors, is known to antagonistically modulate dopaminergic neurotransmission and therefore reward systems, being A1 receptors colocalized in heteromeric complexes with D1 receptors, and A2A receptors with D2 receptors. This review documents the present state of knowledge of the contribution of AR, particularly A1 and A2A, to psychostimulants-mediated effects, including locomotor activity, discrimination, seeking and reward, and discuss their therapeutic relevance to psychostimulant addiction. Studies presented in this review reinforce the potential of A1 agonists as an effective strategy to counteract psychostimulant-induced effects. Furthermore, different experimental data support the hypothesis that A2A/D2 heterodimers are partly responsible for the psychomotor and reinforcing effects of psychostimulant drugs, such as cocaine and amphetamine, and the stimulation of A2A receptor is proposed as a potential therapeutic target for the treatment of drug addiction. Several monitoring studies have shown that benzoylecgonine (BE) is the main illicit drug residue commonly measured in the aquatic system worldwide. Few studies have investigated the potential toxicity of this molecule towards invertebrate and vertebrate aquatic non-target organisms focusing on effects at low levels of the biological organization, but no one has assessed the consequences at higher ones. Thus, the present study was aimed at investigating the toxicity of a 48-h exposure to two concentrations of BE, similar to those found in aquatic ecosystems (0.5 μg/L and 1.0 μg/L), on the cladoceran Daphnia magna at different levels of the ecological hierarchy. We relied on a multi-level approach focusing on the effects at biochemical/biomolecular (biomarkers), individual (swimming activity) and population (reproduction) levels. We measured the amount of reactive oxygen species and of the activity of antioxidant (SOD, CAT, and GPx) and detoxifying (GST) enzymes to assess if BE exposure can alter the oxidative status of D. magna specimens, while the lipid peroxidation (TBARS) was measured as a marker of oxidative damage. Moreover, we also measured the acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity because it is strictly related to behavioral changes in aquatic organisms. Changes in swimming behavior were investigated by a video tracking analysis, while the consequences on reproduction were assessed by a chronic toxicity test. Our results showed that BE concentrations similar to those found in aquatic ecosystems induced oxidative stress and inhibited AChE activity, affecting swimming behavior and the reproduction of Daphnia magna individuals.
