The aim of this work was to determine the sorption capacity of the cationic dyes Basic Red 46 (BR46) and Basic Violet 10 (BV10) on the prepared sorbents: beech bark (BBe) and birch bark (BBi). Two fractions of bark were used in the research: fine (2–3 mm) and coarse (4–5 mm). The carried out tests made it possible to determine the influence of the pH value on the sorption efficiency, the sorption equilibrium time and the maximum sorption capacity of the two tested sorbents. The Langmuir model and the Freundlich model were used to describe the obtained experimental data. Beech and birch barks are effective sorbents for cationic dyes; however, the efficiency of dye sorption on both bark sorbents depends on the type of cationic dye. According to the obtained data, beech and birch bark sorbents showed higher sorption efficiency for Basic Red 46 than for Basic Violet 10. The pH correction was a necessary condition for sorption, and the sorption pH value for the cationic dyes Basic Red 46 and Basic Violet 10 was be determined individually for each dye. The most favourable pH value for the sorption of the BR46 dye on the beach and birch bark sorbents was pH = 6, while for the dye BV10, it was pH = 3. The sorption equilibrium time for Basic Red 46 was 300 min and for Basic Violet 10–240 min. The fine fraction of beech bark had the highest sorption capacity for both BR46 (128.45 mg/g dry matter) and BV10 (18.07 mg/g dry matter). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Lately, nanotechnology focuses on the green synthesis of AgNPs, using different plant materials, as this method is accessible, cost-efficient, and ecological. The study aimed to investigate the antibacterial potential of AgNPs synthesized using beech/spruce bark extracts (BBE/SBE) and silver salts (acetate/nitrate).

Biosynthesis is a green method for the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). This study aimed to assess the antifungal activity of two silver nanoparticle solutions, synthesized using beech bark extract (BBE) and acetate and nitrate silver salts (AgNP Acetate BBE and AgNP Nitrate BBE), their influence on biofilm production, their potential synergistic effects with fluconazole, on different Candida spp., and their influence on virulence factors of C. albicans (germ tube production, gene expression for ALS3, SAP2, HSP70). Both the AgNP BBEs presented different minimum inhibitory concentrations for all the studied Candida spp., but biofilm production was inhibited only for C. albicans and C. guilliermondii. The growth rates of all the studied Candida spp. were inhibited in the presence of both AgNP BBEs, except for C. auris. Synergistic activity was observed for C. parapsilosis and C. guilliermondii, for different combinations of fluconazole with both the AgNP BBEs. The germ tube production of C. albicans was slightly inhibited by the AgNP BBEs. Only AgNP Acetate BBE was able to down-regulate the expression of SAP2. Overall, we can conclude that, even if more studies are necessary, AgNPs synthesized with beech bark extract might be an interesting alternative to classic antifungal treatments.

Over the past few years, special attention has been paid to biomass valorization. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the effect of the phenolic rich extracts obtained from raw materials on the growth and development of lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.). The extracts were obtained from the bark of spruce (Picea abies (L.) H. Karst) and beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) separated as waste product during wood processing. The growth and development of the plants was assessed by measuring elongation of vegetative organs, biomasses including root, stem, and leaf, and photosynthetic pigment content. In addition, the analysis of some histo-anatomic characteristics of the vegetative organs were made. Elongation biomasses and photosynthetic pigments concentration presented higher values in case of plants treated with beech bark phenolic extract compared to control plants. The spruce bark phenolic extract had a stimulatory effect on the germination but inhibited the growth and development of the plants. Both extracts increased the percentage of lignification in stems. These findings could contribute to the development of natural and eco-friendly substances that favor cultivation of lemon balm plants. Future research is needed in order to identify potential qualitative and quantitative changes in the essential oil of the aromatic plant treated with the tested solutions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of bioactive compounds can act in growth stimulation and also influence the biosynthesis of the metabolites in plants. The aim of this paper is to assess the influence of the beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) bark crude extract (BBCE) on the growth and development of sage (Salvia officinalis L.) plants. Special attention was given to the analysis of volatile oil obtained from the sage treated plant. Thus, the biological activity of BBCE was assessed by determining the germination capacity, biomass accumulation, histo-anatomical aspects, and photoassimilatory pigment accumulation, quantitative, and qualitative sage volatile oil analysis. The results show stimulation of the biomass and photoassimilatory pigment accumulation. The mesophyll thickness and the vascular tissue surface are smaller in the treated variants, compared to the control. On the other hand, the amount of volatile oil was significantly higher in the treated plants. In the experimental variants, an increase in the quantity of eucalyptol, camphor, camphene, and α-caryophyllene is observed. The amount of eucalyptol increased in the experimental variant, with about 82%, compared to the control. BBCE could be properly used as natural bioregulators because according to our results seems to improve the yield of the sage crop. The results of this research have the potential to contribute greatly to ecological agricultural production.

The aim of this study was to reach the best efficiency of total polyphenols extraction from beech bark. The impacts of solvent concentration, sonication time, and temperature were investigated relative to the yield of extractives from beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) bark using ultrasoundassisted extraction at 40 kHz ultrasonic frequency. All extracts were characterized quantitatively in terms of total content in polyphenols. The extracts obtained in the optimized conditions were also evaluated qualitatively. Beech bark can be a rich raw material for obtaining bioactive polyphenols. An experimental planning method was described that optimized the process and increased the extraction yield. In the experiments, water and ethanol:water solvent solutions were used. The efficiency of the extraction process was determined based on a factorial analysis of variance. The maximum extraction yield of total polyphenols (72.716 mg gallic acid equivalents/g beech bark) was obtained using a processing time of 20 min, an extraction temperature of 65 °C, and an ethanol solvent concentration of 70%. The extracts obtained under the optimum conditions were characterized to determine potential uses of beech bark extractives. The results obtained indicated that ultrasoundassisted extraction was an efficient method for the extraction of natural compounds from beech bark; thus, this method allows for the full utilization of this abundant and low-cost industrial waste. The study provides information about separation and identification of natural bioactive compounds from beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) bark with potential therapeutic applications such as antibacterial activity against human pathogens. Beech is a common material used in the wood industry, but its bark is separated from the wood and is considered a by-product. In this study, natural compounds with biological activity were obtained from beech bark by hot water extraction. The high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to analyze the phenolic compounds in the beech bark extracts. Spectrophotometric methods were employed for the determination of total phenolic content. Microdilution technique was used for testing the antimicrobial activity of the extract. The following strains were tested: Staphylococcus aureus, Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The yield of extracted polyphenols was of 22.952 mg gallic acid/g dry bark. The compounds identified by HPLC were vanilic acid, catechin, taxifolin and syringin. The extracts were active against Staphylococcus aureus and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. The effect of polyphenolic extract on Gram-negative bacteria was absent at a concentration of 30 mg/mL beach bark extract. Altogether, the use of pure water for extraction of polyphenols from beech bark proved to be an effective eco-friendly method. In the present study, synthesis and bioactivity of AgNPs has been demonstrated using water beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) bark extract. The physical and chemical factors such as time, metal ion solution, and pH, which play a vital role in the AgNPs synthesis, were assessed. The AgNPs were characterized by ultraviolet-visible (UV-Vis) spectrometry, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of the obtained AgNPs was evaluated. AgNPs were characterized by color change pattern, and the broad peak obtained at 420−475 nm with UV-Vis confirmed the synthesis of AgNPs. FT-IR results confirmed that phenols and proteins of beech bark extract are mainly responsible for capping and stabilization of synthesized AgNPs. TEM micrographs showed spherical or rarely polygonal and triangular particles with an average size of 32 nm at pH = 9, and 62 nm at pH = 4. Furthermore, synthesized AgNPs were found to exhibit antioxidant activity and have antibacterial effect against Staphylococcus aureus, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. These results indicate that bark extract of F. sylvatica L. is suitable for synthesizing stable AgNPs, which act as an excellent antimicrobial agent.

The present study aimed, on the one hand, to improve the yield of microwave assisted extraction (MAE) of polyphenols from beech bark by using a design of experiments (DoE) approach. On the other hand, beech bark extracts (BBE) were characterized in terms of their phytochemical profile and evaluated for biological potential (antioxidant, antibacterial, antifungal, antimutagen, anti-α-glucosidase, and anti-tyrosinase). The extraction time varies with the amount of extracted total phenolic content (TPC). The microwave power favors TPC extraction but in different proportions. The optimum conditions which gave the highest TPC (76.57 mg GAE/g dry plant material) were reached when the microwave power was 300 W, extraction time was 4 min, and the solvent was an ethanol−water (50:50) mixture. The practical value of TPC after a controlled experiment was 76.49 mg GAE/g plant material. The identified compounds were vanillic acid, gallic acid, epicatechin, catechin, protocatechuic acid, chlorogenic acid, ferulic acid, and isoquercitrin. The antioxidant potential of BBEs was demonstrated by in vitro experiments. The BBEs were active against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Salmonella typhimurium, Escherichia coli, and Candida species. All extracts were antimutagenic and expressed an inhibition on α-glucosidase and tyrosinase activity. Regarding antimutagen activity, the assayed extracts may be considered to have low or no antimutagen effects.

The influence of beech bark concentrations as filler in urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesives was investigated relative to the composite forming process and selected properties of final 5-layer beech plywood. Beech bark was used as filler to lower the wood processing waste production and decrease formaldehyde emissions. A combination of UF adhesives filled with different beech bark concentrations as the adhesive was used. Three different concentrations of beech bark, 15 wt.%, 20 wt.%, and 25 wt.% were used in the experiment. Urea-formaldehyde adhesive filled with 20 wt.% technical flour was used as a reference sample. The effect of the filler was studied via its temperature profile during pressing, mechanical properties in bending, water absorption, thickness swelling, and formaldehyde emissions after pressing. The time needed to reach the temperature between the beech veneers, at least 105 °C, which was equal to the final temperature filler-adhesive-wood matrix cross-linking, was also investigated during the pressing process. The measurements of the free formaldehyde emissions showed that for samples with non-zero bark concentrations there was a decrease of formaldehyde emissions by at least 46%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ascodichaena rugosa Butin is a corkinhabiting fungus, found frequently on the bark of Fagus sylvatica L. The hyphae of the fungus are distributed solely in the phellem cells, stopping their growth in the last-formed cork cell layer. The cell to cell invasion is effected by penetration hyphae, causing no extensive dissolution of the cork wall. Electron microscopical observations revealed fine structural details of the fruit bodies and of the intracellular hyphae. Of special interest were the finger-like hyaline hyphae in the last-formed layer of cork cells, which are interpreted as haustoria on the basis of the fine structure both of hyphae and host cells. This situation is considered as reflecting a parasitic relationship of Ascodichaena to beech bark. The activity of the fungus led also to the increased production of cork cells, perhaps related to the nutrient supply of the fungus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The synthesis of silver nanoparticles is usually performed by physical and chemical methods, but this non-biological methods leads to high toxicity for living organisms and it is preferable to use biosynthesis. In order to satisfy the cost and pollution considerations, researchers chose the biosynthesis using extracts of plants. Objective: The aim of this research was to obtained silver nanoparticles using aqueous extracts from beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and spruce (Picea abies L.) bark. Material and methods: Silver nanoparticles was obtained in special conditions using aqueous solutions of AgNO3/AgC2H3O2 and aqueous extracts with different pH in ultrasonic bath at 60oC for 3 hours. At certain time intervals the absorbance was measured at UV-VIS. The synthesis of silver nanoparticles was confirmed by the change in mixtures color. The silver nanoparticles were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and ultraviolet-visible-near infrared spectroscopy. Results: It was found that silver nanoparticles have a limited absorption range in UV-VIS, FT-IR and the shape and sizes depends on the type of extract and pH. Color change occurred more quickly in case of spruce extracts in comparison to those of beech. The results of research into utilizing grinded beech bark in order to substitute commonly used fillers in urea formaldehyde (UF) adhesive mixtures to bond plywood are presented in the present study. Four test groups of plywood with various adhesive mixtures were manufactured under laboratory conditions and used for experimentation. Plywood made using the same technology, with the common filler (technical flour), was used as a reference material. Three different concentrations of grinded beech bark were used. The thermal conductivity of the fillers used, viscosity and its time dependence, homogeneity and the dispersion performance of fillers were evaluated in the analysis of adhesive mixture. The time necessary for heating up the material during the pressing process was a further tested parameter. The produced plywood was analyzed in terms of its modulus of elasticity, bending strength, perpendicular tensile strength and free formaldehyde emissions. Following the research results, beech bark can be characterized as an ecologically friendly alternative to technical flour, shortening the time of pressing by up to 27%. At the same time, in terms of the statistics, the mechanical properties and stability of the material changed insignificantly, and the formaldehyde emissions reduced significantly, by up to 74%. The utilization of bark was in compliance with long-term sustainability, resulting in a decrease in the environmental impact of waste generated during the wood processing. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
