Abstract We report the first experimental measurements of the nine 1-fold differential cross sections for the γ p → π + π − p reaction, obtained with the CLAS detector at Jefferson Laboratory. The measurements cover the invariant mass range of the final state hadrons from 1.6 GeV < W < 2.0 GeV. For the first time the photocouplings of all prominent nucleon resonances in this mass range have been extracted from this exclusive channel. Photoproduction of two charged pions is of particular importance for the evaluation of the photocouplings for the Δ (1620) 1 / 2 − , Δ (1700) 3 / 2 − , N (1720) 3 / 2 + , and Δ (1905) 5 / 2 + resonances, which have dominant decays into the ππN final states rather than the more extensively studied single meson decay channels. The existence of a bound state of five quarks with c ¯ content is still controversial. In this paper we focus on weakly decaying charmed pentaquarks and show how they can be searched for in high energy anti-neutrino interactions. By analyzing 2262 charged-current interactions with a muon of positive charge in the CHORUS detector, we performed a search for Θ c 0 production. Based on the null observation, the limit of Θ c 0 production is found as a function of different Θ c 0 lifetimes. The tightest bound is σ Θ c 0 / σ ν ¯ 0.039 at 90% C.L. for Θ c 0 lifetime equal to 0.5 τ D 0 . We outline also the excellent potentiality of such a search at a neutrino factory with an emulsion detector.

We search for the charmed pentaquark candidate reported by the H1 collaboration, the Θc(3100)0, in e+e- interactions at a center-of-mass (c.m.) energy of 10.58 GeV, using 124fb-1 of data recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- facility at SLAC. We find no evidence for such a state in the same pD*- decay mode reported by H1, and we set limits on its production cross section times branching fraction into pD*- as a function of c.m. momentum. The corresponding limit on its total rate per e+e-→qq̄ event, times branching fraction, is about 3 orders of magnitude lower than rates measured for the charmed Λc and Σc baryons in such events. © 2006 The American Physical Society.

We present a model for the formation of the charmed pentaquark Theta_c in hard scattering processes such as deep inelastic scattering, e^+e^- annihilation, and high-energy p pbar collisions. The model assumes that the cross section for Theta_c formation is proportional to the rate of production of p D^{*-} (or pbar D^{*+}) pairs in close proximity both in momentum space and in coordinate space. The constant of proportionality is determined from the Theta_c cross section in deep inelastic scattering as reported by the H1 experiment. The HERWIG Monte Carlo is used to generate simulated DIS events and also to model the space-time structure of the final state. Requiring the proton and the D^* be within a 100 MeV mass window and separated by a spacelike distance of no more than 2 fm, we find that a large "coalescence enhancement factor" F_co \sim 10 is required to account for the H1 signal. The same approach is then applied in order to estimate the number and characteristics of Theta_c events produced at LEP and the Tevatron., Expanded general discussion of the coalescence model. Revised sec. 2.4, following correction of an error in HERWIG in the programming of the space-time structure of the underlying event in hadron-hadron collisions. Quantitative changes are small
