Aim: Despite extensive studies of phenological shifts in migration by climate change and driving factors of migration, a few issues remain unresolved. In particular, little is known about the complex effects of driving factors on migration with interactions and nonlinearity, and partitioning of the effects of factors into spatial, temporal, and spatio‐temporal effects. Here, we aim to elucidate migration pattern as well as its driving factors under climate change. Location: Western North Pacific. Taxon: North Pacific spiny dogfish Squalus suckleyi. Methods: We first examined long‐term changes in the timing and geographic location of migration by applying the Barrier model, a spatio‐temporal model, to c. 5‐decade time series data (1972–2019) for the presence/absence of spiny dogfish in the western North Pacific. We then evaluated the spatial, temporal and spatio‐temporal effects of driving factors (fish productivity, sea surface temperature [SST], depth and magnetic field) on seasonal occurrence patterns using a machine learning model and an interpretable machine learning technique. Results: The migration area did not change over c. 5‐decades, whereas the migration timing advanced by a month after 2000. The spatial effects of magnetic field and depth were consistently large and the spatial and spatio‐temporal effects of SST increased in the migration season, even though the temporal effect of SST was consistently weak. Main Conclusions: The migration area of spiny dogfish was stable over time because of the effect of magnetic field and a strong preference for submarine topography, whereas the migration timing advanced as a result of tracking a suitable location based on SST, which increased sharply after 2000. Therefore, temperature and other factors simultaneously influence migration under climate change, highlighting the importance of considering both biotic and abiotic factors and understanding the underlying processes in predicting future impacts of climate change on species distribution. Manufacturing Supply Chain (MSC) becomes more complex not only from the business viewpoint but also for environmental care and sustainability. Despite the current progress in realizing how Big Data Analytics (BDA) can considerably enhance the Sustainable Manufacturing Supply Chain (SMSC), there is a major research gap in the storyline relating to factors of Big Data-based operations in managing several forms of SMSC operations. This study attempts to fill this major research gap by studying the key challenges of using Big Data in SMSC operations obtained from IoT devices, group behavior parameters, social networks, and ecosystem frameworks. Big Data Analytics (BDA) is receiving more attention in management, yet there is relatively little empirical research available on the topic. The authors use the multi-criteria strategy employing analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and grey relational analysis (GRA) methodology due to the dearth of comparable information at the junction of BDA and MSC. The presented multi-criteria strategy findings add to the body of understanding by identifying eleven critical criteria and five associated challenges (Financial, Quality, Operation, Technical, and Logistics) related to the emergence of Big Data Analytics from a corporate and supply chain perspective. The findings reveal that product safety barriers (C4) and lack of information sharing (C8) are the critical factor immensely surge and affect the MSC in attaining sustainability. As no empirical study has yet been presented, it is important to examine the challenges at the organizational and MSC levels with a focus on the effects of BDA implementation to achieve sustainability with enhanced customer trust and improved SMSC performance. Natural hazards like floods, cyclones, earthquakes, or, tsunamis have deep impacts on the environment and society causing damage to both life and property. These events can cause widespread destruction and can lead to long-term socio-economic disruption often affecting the most vulnerable populations in society. Computational modeling provides an essential tool to estimate the damage by incorporating spatial uncertainties and examining global risk assessments. Classical stationary models in spatial statistics often assume isotropy and stationarity. It causes inappropriate smoothing over features having boundaries, holes, or physical barriers. Despite this, nonstationary models like barrier model have been little explored in the context of natural disasters in complex land structures. The principal objective of the current study is to evaluate the influence of barrier models compared to classical stationary models by analysing the incidence of natural disasters in complex spatial regions like islands and coastal areas. In the current study, we have used tsunami records from the island nation of Maldives. For seven atoll groups considered in our study, we have implemented three distinct categories of stochastic partial differential equation meshes, two for stationary models and one that corresponds to the barrier model concept. The results show that when assessing the spatial variance of tsunami incidence at the atoll scale, the barrier model outperforms the other two models while maintaining the same computational cost as the stationary models. In the broader picture, this research work contributes to the relatively new field of nonstationary barrier models and intends to establish a robust modeling framework to explore spatial phenomena, particularly natural hazards, in complex spatial regions having physical barriers. Poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) is an aliphatic polycarbonate synthesized from carbon dioxide and propylene oxide. Poly(3‐hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) is a type of thermoplastic polyester produced by biological fermentation. The blending of PHB with PPC can effectively enhance the mechanical properties and barrier properties of PPC. Bionanocomposites of PPC/PHB enhanced by cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) are prepared via a two‐step process using polyethylene glycol as a carrier. Results show that the oxygen barrier properties of the composites increased with the increase of the CNC content. When the CNC content is 1 wt%, the oxygen barrier performance increases nearly 18 times. The assumed model can predict the barrier performance of composites with the combined influence of morphology and CNC distribution. This will make PPC/PHB/CNC nanocomposites a very promising degradable material for food packaging application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Seabirds are facing increasing threats in both marine and terrestrial habitats, and many populations have experienced dramatic declines over past decades. Fisheries bycatch is the most pervasive at-sea threat and is of increasing concern in fisheries management and marine conservation. We predicted spatial and temporal heterogeneities of seabird bycatch probability in the US Atlantic pelagic longline fishery (PLL) through an interactive Barrier model based on observer data from the National Marine Fisheries Service Pelagic Observer Program. The Barrier model prevents bias caused by physical barriers such as coastlines by defining the spatial correlation function as a collection of paths between points and eliminating any paths across physical barriers. The integrated nested Laplace approximations methodology and stochastic partial differential equations approach were applied to fit the model, greatly reducing execution time. Seabird bycatch had a hotspot of high bycatch probability in the mid-Atlantic bight in most years, and the hotspot varied in presence and location yearly. The inter-annual variations in bycatch hotspot are correlated with Gulf Stream meanders. Special area and time fishing restrictions predicted by relationships with Gulf Stream positions might enable the US Atlantic PLL to avoid peak areas and periods of seabird bycatch and thereby support seabird conservation. PPC/PHB film was prepared by extrusion blow molding. Tbc relationship between morphology and properties of the film was investigated. Results show that tensile strength of PPC/PHB film increased with tbc increase of PI IB content. The longitudinal tensile strength of the film was larger than that of the transverse direction and the transverse right-angle tear strength was slightly higher than that of the longitudinal direction. Both water vapor and oxygen permeability coefficients of the film decreased with the increasing PI IB content, which indicated that the water blocking and oxygen harrier properties were improved. Oxygen permeability coefficient of PPC/PHB film with 30 wt% PUB was 5 times of that for pure PPC. Background: The epithelial layer of the nasal mucosa is the first barrier for drug permeation during intranasal drug delivery. With increasing interest for intranasal pathways, adequate in vitro models are required. Here, porcine olfactory (OEPC) and respiratory (REPC) primary cells were characterised against the nasal tumour cell line RPMI 2650. Methods: Culture conditions for primary cells from porcine nasal mucosa were optimized and the cells characterised via light microscope, RT-PCR and immunofluorescence. Epithelial barrier function was analysed via transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER), and FITC-dextran was used as model substance for transepithelial permeation. Beating cilia necessary for mucociliary clearance were studied by immunoreactivity against acetylated tubulin. Results: OEPC and REPC barrier models differ in TEER, transepithelial permeation and MUC5AC levels. In contrast, RPMI 2650 displayed lower levels of MUC5AC, cilia markers and TEER, and higher FITC-dextran flux rates. Conclusion: To screen pharmaceutical formulations for intranasal delivery in vitro, translational mucosal models are needed. Here, a novel and comprehensive characterisation of OEPC and REPC against RPMI 2650 is presented. The established primary models display an appropriate model for nasal mucosa with secreted MUC5AC, beating cilia and a functional epithelial barrier, which is suitable for long-term evaluation of sustained release dosage forms.

Generalized renewable energy use and the implementation of energy efficiency are two promising solutions to face global environmental challenges and achieve sustainable development. Government and large enterprises are making efforts in this direction; however, there are bottlenecks to start energy efficiency projects especially in non-intensive energy enterprises (NIEs). The aim of this work is to discuss energy efficiency improvement (EEI) initiatives and analyses a framework proposal to improve the energy efficiency implementation in (NIEs). It was applied the theory of Barrier Model to Energy Efficiency to understand the gap between the levels of opportunities implemented, and what theoretically the industrial sector could achieve. It was found that behavior barriers are relevant to understand the efficiency gap and it is necessary to have an action plan to address them. The analysis has been carried out in the fertilizer industry and the preliminary results demonstrate the advantageous reduction of energy losses.

In this paper the formation mechanisms of separation layers formed by wear products of metal-polymer tribological systems components are given. It is shown that these formation mechanisms determine work and kinetics of separation layers frictional interaction. Using the barrier model was justified the formation of "charge mosaic" on counter-surface of tribological system. Phase transitions, dielectric permittivity, and conductivity of (Bi1-xBax)(Fe1-xTix)O3(x = 0.05 and 0.1) [BFO-(Ba,Ti)] multiferroic ceramics have been studied as functions of temperature and frequency.In situsynchrotron x-ray diffraction revealed rhombohedral–cubic transitions in the temperature ranges 760–780°C in BFO-5%(Ba,Ti), and 720–750°C in BFO-10%(Ba,Ti). A one-dimensional barrier model with intrinsic barriers B every lattice constantaand extrinsic barriers B + Δ is introduced to describe the dielectric response and conductivity. This work revealed that (Ba,Ti) substitutions can enhance the intrinsic barriers and reduce the hopping rate of charge carriers, thereby giving the desired effect of decreasing the conductivity. Dielectric permittivity and loss of \ BiFeO3 (BFO) and 5 mol% lanthanum-substituted BFO [(\ Bi0.95{\ {La}}0.05){\ {FeO}}3 or BFO-5% La] ceramics have been carried out as functions of temperature and frequency. A frequency-dependent and broad dielectric shoulder and maximum were observed in BFO and BFO-5% La near 600–700 K. These dielectric responses are likely due to the magnetoelectric coupling while the antiferromagnetic–paramagnetic transition takes place near the Néel temperature. As an approximation, a barrier model with intrinsic barriers B (in temperature unit) every lattice constant a and extrinsic barriers B +\Delta every distance d is introduced to describe the low-frequency upturn in dielectric loss in the high-temperature region. Good qualitative fits are obtained for BFO and BFO-5% La. This work suggests that 5 mol% La substitution can enhance dielectric response and considerably reduce electric conductivity. We present an augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) training program provided to 20 special education teachers in a Palestinian Arab community in Israel. The training program consisted of didactic workshops interleaved with on-site supervision. Instructional goals included creating awareness, imparting knowledge, and assisting teachers to develop and use AAC within their classrooms. Prior to training, we administered a questionnaire to assess teachers' knowledge, practices, and attitudes in relation to AAC. The questionnaire was re-administered and individual interviews were conducted post-training to determine the program's impact on knowledge, practices, and attitude barriers. Teachers' responses revealed that training helped them to address barriers to AAC intervention. The responses also provided insights into the linguistic and cultural challenges of AAC implementation within the Palestinian Arab community. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A cognitive-behavior model to evaluate barriers to HACCP guideline adherence by HACCP team members was developed. It was based on the theory of experiential learning where knowledge, attitude and behavior must be sequentially overcome. Twenty-seven HACCP team members from four food processors participated to assess barriers to guideline adherence. Non-awareness to HACCP guideline was a major barrier. The national government was recognized as key source of HACCP information. Commitment to adopt HACCP guideline was established. Also, the need for food processor management to understand that teams must be multidisciplinary to ensure guideline adherence has been established. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

A procedure is developed for dealing with multioccupancy in single-filing channels having any number of sites internal to the barriers at the channel ends but having the outermost sites in equilibrium with the bathing solutions. Using this procedure, a general theory is developed for a single-filing channel having three barriers and four sites, the outermost of which are in equilibrium with the bathing solutions. By introducing a vectorial representation, it is shown that the four-site model can be reduced to an equivalent two-site model with respect to the number of possible transitions, thereby simplifying the algebraic steps required to solve transport equations for the system. The transport coefficients are derived and expressed in terms of the energy levels of the peaks and the wells for the different occupancy configurations. An explicit solution to the transport equations is given in a comprised form for a single permeable species. The solution allows some important properties for the system to be deduced, specifically with regard, to the conductance at zero current, the correlation factor between electrical conductance and tracer flux, and the current-voltage relationship. Although we have recently reported the involvement of neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) in intranasal transport, the transport mechanisms are far from being elucidated. Ex vivo porcine olfactory tissue, primary cells from porcine olfactory epithelium (OEPC) and the human cell line RPMI 2650 were used to evaluate the permeation of porcine and human IgG antibodies through the nasal mucosa. IgGs were used in their wild type and deglycosylated form to investigate the impact of glycosylation. Further, the expression of FcRn and Fc-gamma receptor (FCGR) and their interaction with IgG were analyzed. Comparable permeation rates for human and porcine IgG were observed in OEPC, which display the highest expression of FcRn. Only traces of porcine IgGs could be recovered at the basolateral compartment in ex vivo olfactory tissue, while human IgGs reached far higher levels. Deglycosylated human IgG showed significantly higher permeation in comparison to the wild type in RPMI 2650 and OEPC, but insignificantly elevated in the ex vivo model. An immunoprecipitation with porcine primary cells and tissue identified FCGR2 as a potential interaction partner in the nasal mucosa. Glycosylation sensitive receptors appear to be involved in the uptake, transport, but also degradation of therapeutic IgGs in the airway epithelial layer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background—Bowtie analysis is a broadly used tool in risk management to identify root causes and consequences of hazards and show barriers that can prevent or mitigate the events to happen. Limitations of the method are reliance on judgement and an ad hoc development process. Purpose—Systematic approaches are needed to identify threats and consequences, and to ascertain mitigation and prevention barriers. Results—A new conceptual framework is introduced by combining the Bowtie method with the 6M structure of Ishikawa to categorise the threats, consequences and barriers. The method is developed for visual inspection of gas turbine components, for which an example is provided. Originality—Provision of a more systematic methodology has the potential to result in more comprehensive Bowtie risk assessments, with less chance of serious omissions. The method is expected to find application in the broader industry, and to support operators who are non-risk experts but have application-specific knowledge, when performing Bowtie risk assessment.
