In recent years, the complex evolution of the highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) situation reflects a change in the eco-epidemiology of the causative agent which, among other demands, renews the need for better understanding of the connectivity between countries through the main virus reservoirs to improve prevention, early warning and mitigate the associated risks. Our objective was to determine migratory connectivity of Blue-winged Teal and evaluate the risk of AIV introduction to Cuba by this species. The stable hydrogen isotope (d2H) value in flight feathers was analyzed. Individuals were sampled during the migratory season of 2021 (N=126) and winter residence of 2020 (N=152), in western and central Cuba, respectively. Based on banding records from 1955 to 2018, the transition probabilities from 3 breeding areas in North America to 9 wintering areas was estimated with a Burnham's live-recapture dead-recovery modeling framework. A map of likely origin in North America of the individuals sampled for each season was generated, combining the isotopic information and transition probabilities. Evidence of an age-related and phenological pattern in migratory origins was identified. Individuals harvested in the migratory season in western Cuba were most likely from molt or natal areas in the prairies and forest regions from United States and southern Canada. Alternatively, individuals harvested in winter in the center of Cuba had the most likely origin in the U.S. prairie region. The spatial-temporal pattern of AIV prevalence in the estimated region was analyzed and suggestions are made to assist the Cuban system of active AIV surveillance of wild birds. The timing of migratory passage for sexes and ages of birds is difficult to document because migration is spread out over time and space. We compared sex and age ratios from 10 species of birds that were banded in Wisconsin during fall migration to a sample of autumn window-killed birds from Chicago, Illinois. We assumed that these specimens were a random sample of the migrating population because dates of passage in Wisconsin either predate or were coincident with specimens recovered in Chicago. More juveniles than adults collided with windows, which is expected because of the higher number of juveniles in the fall migratory population. For Connecticut Warbler (Oporornis agilis), Dark-eyed Junco (Junco hyemalis), Ovenbird (Seiurus aurocapilla), and White-throated Sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis), statistically fewer adults collided with windows than expected. It is possible that adults of these species, who have made at least 2 prior successful migratory journeys, might have experienced some degree of learning to avoid windows. For specimen data, ratios of males to females were approximately equal, except for Swamp Sparrow (Melospiza georgiana; 1:0.82). However, banders were unable to determine sex for a high percentage of each species, ranging from 98.5% undetermined sex for Hermit Thrush (Catharus guttatus) to 48% for Common Yellowthroat (Geothlypis trichas). Taken at face value, banding records for Common Yellowthroat, Dark-eyed Junco, and White-throated Sparrow indicated a much higher percentage of males, whereas for Song Sparrow (Melospiza melodia), females were much more common; 6 species showed no apparent difference in sex ratio between the banding and window samples. In species for which banders declined to identify an individual's sex for a high percentage of birds, we questioned whether the identification of sex in the remaining small percentage was accurate. Thus, we considered the alternative possibility that the specimen data were in fact the most appropriate null hypothesis, and if so, it would suggest that banders have misidentified sexes consistently in 4 species, and ages in 7 species. The availability of detailed information that encompasses the geographic range of a species, spans a long-term temporal range, and yields individual information (e.g., age and sex), is a principle challenge in ecology. To this end, the North American Bird Banding Laboratory maintains a unique and underutilized dataset that can be used to address core questions of phenological change in migratory birds. We used records from 1966 to 2015 to quantify how the timing of migration has shifted in a long-distance migrant, the Black-throated Blue Warbler (Setophaga caerulescens). Additionally, we examined age and sex differences in the timing of migratory movements. We observed that early spring migrants passed through sites ∼1.1 days earlier per decade and the peak of spring migration also occurred earlier over the 50 yr of this study. Additionally, phenological change was more rapid with increasing latitude during peak spring migratory periods. During fall, the peak of migration stayed consistent across the 50 yr studied, but the migratory season showed protraction overall. During spring, males consistently migrated earlier than females and adults migrated earlier than young individuals. During fall, there was no difference in timing between males and females, but young birds migrated earlier than adults. Additionally, migration proceeded faster in spring compared with the fall. This study reveals differential strategies in migrant timing, across seasons, age groups, and by sex, and shows that en route adjustments across latitude may account for changes in migrant timing. This basic information about such a fundamental ecological process is crucial to our understanding of migration and we must utilize these unique data to appreciate critical shifts at relevant scales of migration. The awe-inspiring seasonal migrations of birds between breeding and wintering grounds has long attracted the interest of casual naturalists and professional ornithologists alike. Although new technologies improve our ability to follow individual migrants throughout their annual cycle, the scale and detail provided by banding records remain incredibly valuable. The focus of avian migration studies is often the most physiologically challenging migratory feats that sometimes leaves certain species or seasons relatively understudied. The Blackpoll Warbler (Setophaga striata) is well-known for its transoceanic migratory flight during fall migration, the season in which it is best studied, yet the details of its spring migration are not well known, at least not at a continental scale. Here we use spring migration banding data on over 15,000 Blackpoll Warblers from 28 banding sites across North America to describe the details of the spring migration patterns in this species. Our data, which spans almost 60 years, indicates that Blackpoll Warblers are migrating earlier at a rate of 0.5 days per decade. We also demonstrate an expected protandrous migratory pattern and an unexpected sex-dependent difference in migration speed with females migrating more quickly than males. Our analyses of longitudinal timing patterns reveal that passage through sites west of 85° occurs prior to passage at sites east of 85° and that this difference increases throughout the migratory period, indicating that birds using western sites are migrating faster. Additionally, we provide evidence vis-à-vis analyses of wing length that birds from eastern and western breeding locations mix at lower-latitude migratory sites but their migratory paths diverge as birds proceed north. These results indicate that birds migrating to western breeding sites differ in their migration speed and route thus compensating for the longer migratory distances traveled by western populations of Blackpoll Warblers compared to those breeding in eastern North America.

Understanding migratory connectivity for species of concern is of great importance if we are to implement management aimed at conserving them. New methods are improving our understanding of migration; however, banding (ringing) data is by far the most widely available and accessible movement data for researchers. Here, we use band recovery data for American black ducks (Anas rubripes) from 1951–2011 and analyze their movement among seven management regions using a hierarchical Bayesian framework. We showed that black ducks generally exhibit flyway fidelity, and that many black ducks, regardless of breeding region, stopover or overwinter on the Atlantic coast of the United States. We also show that a non-trivial portion of the continental black duck population either does not move at all or moves to the north during the fall migration (they typically move to the south). The results of this analysis will be used in a projection modeling context to evaluate how habitat or harvest management actions in one region would propagate throughout the continental population of black ducks. This analysis may provide a guide for future research and help inform management efforts for black ducks as well as other migratory species.

Understanding patterns in avian migration phenology and the proximate mechanisms for such patterns is important for assessing behavioural responses of individuals or populations to climate change. Among songbirds, protandry in spring is a common pattern; phenology in fall is less well described. Using tracking data collected from geolocators deployed at a breeding site, and capture data from banding stations, we assessed fall and spring migration phenology of an Arctic-breeding passerine, the Snow Bunting ( Plectrophenax nivalis), by sex and age. We measured migration timing, speed, and distance, as well as duration of migration stopovers to test proximate mechanisms for observed sex and age differences in spring and fall migration phenology. During fall migration, hatch-year birds preceded adults, and adult males tended to precede adult females; however, there remained extensive variation by year. Males and females tracked directly arrived at winter sites at approximately the same time. During early spring migration, Snow Buntings exhibited moderate protandry, where after-second-year males preceded all other age-sex classes by ~6 days, on average. Surprisingly, protandry was not apparent at late spring migration or at breeding arrival. Instead, arrival dates by sex and age appeared highly variable between years. The winter site arrival date was predicted by fall migration departure date, total number of stopover days, migration speed, and migration distance. The breeding site arrival date was similarly predicted by spring migration departure date, total stopover days, and migration speed. Our results provide key baseline data for monitoring ongoing changes in migration phenology of this important Arctic-breeding songbird, as climate change effects become more pronounced across temperate and Arctic regions. Worldwide, most populations of migratory shorebirds are in jeopardy, none more so than those of the East Asian–Australasian Flyway (EAAF). In order to preserve these highly mobile species a detailed understanding of their use of feeding and resting sites along the flyway is required. In this study we used light-level geolocators and new analytical tools to reveal individual breeding locations and migration routes of 13 Sanderlings (Calidris alba) that spend their non-breeding season in South Australia. We then used these individual migration routes to identify the timing and location of important stopping areas and compared this with assessments based on resightings of leg-flagged birds and count data. During both northward and southward migration, Sanderlings were found to make extensive use of five main areas of the Chinese coastline, the Yellow Sea and the northern end of the Sakhalin Peninsula. Insights gained from the individual migration routes highlight inherent biases in using only count and resighting data to identify important feeding and resting sites along the Flyway. These findings suggest that data on individual movements may be crucial to effective conservation planning of shorebirds in the EAAF and elsewhere in the world. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Bird ringing datasets constitute possibly the largest source of temporal and spatial information on vertebrate taxa available on the globe. Initially, the method was invented to understand avian migration patterns. However, data deriving from bird ringing has been used in an array of other disciplines including population monitoring, changes in demography, conservation management and to study the effects of climate change to name a few. Despite the widespread usage and importance, there are no guidelines available specifically describing the practice of data management, preparation and analyses of ringing datasets. Here, we present the first of a series of comprehensive tutorials that may help fill this gap. We describe in detail and through a real-life example the intricacies of data cleaning and how to create a data table ready for analyses from raw ringing data in the R software environment. Moreover, we created and present here the R package; , designed to carry out various specific tasks and plots related to bird ringing data. Most methods described here can also be applied to a wide range of capture-recapture type data based on individual marking, regardless to taxa or research question. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article presents a summary of raptor banding records at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Bird Banding Laboratory (BBL). The BBL database contain more than 70 million records. Data that are stored electronically comprise 61 million records, with 1.86 million representing raptors. The common banded species include Sharp-skinned Hawk, American Kestrel, Red-tailed Hawk and Cooper's Hawk. According to the database, most raptor binding has taken place at migration monitoring stations. The database can demonstrate the popularity in the use of auxiliary markers such as coded leg bands, geolocators or transmitters.

We describe some recent developments in the POPAN system for the analysis of mark-recapture data from Jolly-Seber (JS) type experiments and how this system applies to the analysis of banding data. We discuss some of the extra data requirements of JS studies, which provide estimates of abundance and entry/birth rates, over survival (CJS) studies. We discuss how POPAN implements a unified likelihood approach using a constrained maximization and show how this differs from a design-matrix approach used in CIS software. We illustrate the application of constraints and covariate' models across groups with some examplesdrawn from the banding literature, including an example with age-class groups and we describe some of the resources in POPAN for carryingout standard tests for goodness-of-fit.
