Zespół wzgórza zamkowego w Gniewie należy do grupy najcenniejszych zabytków związanych z państwem krzyżackim. Wielokrotnie w swoich dziejach niszczony i przebudowywany zamek konwentualny, siedziba polskich starostów, w XIX wieku magazyn, potem więzienie i koszary, zniszczony pożarem w 1921 roku, przez szereg kolejnych dziesięcioleci pozostawał w formie ruiny. Początek badań architektonicznych, prac projektowych, budowlanych i konserwatorskich na terenie zamku gniewskiego datuje się na lata 60–te XX wieku. Artykuł przedstawia efekty prac prowadzonych przez PP Pracownie Konserwacji Zabytków w latach 1962–1990 oraz dotychczas niepublikowane wyniki, wykonanych w latach 1972–1973, badań historyczno-architektonicznych zabudowy wzgórza zamkowego. Zaprezentowana zostanie także autorska koncepcja adaptacji zamku, wykonana w 1973 roku na podstawie wyników badań i rozwarstwienia chronologiczne. W oparciu o zasadę ograniczonej interwencji w strukturę zabytku, przy wykorzystaniu zaangażowania mieszkańców oraz lokalnego potencjału inwestycyjnego, w latach 1991–2001, przy aktywnym udziale wojewódzkiego konserwatora zabytków, zrealizowano pierwszy etap prac adaptacyjnych. Realizacja drugiego etapu w latach 2002–2011 polegała na modyfikacji programu użytkowego wynikającej z nowych oczekiwań skoncentrowanych na obsłudze ruchu turystycznego dostosowanych do realnych możliwości finansowania. W okresie pięćdziesięciu lat, dzięki działalności wielu osób i instytucji, w zmieniającym się otoczeniu organizacyjnym i finansowym przy ewolucji teorii ochrony zabytków, zamek w Gniewie doprowadzony został do stanu umożliwiającego jego użytkowanie. Zasadniczo zmieniona koncepcja architektoniczna oraz związany z nią charakter i zakres prac budowlano – konserwatorskich prowadzonych po 2011 roku wyznaczył cezurę czasową niniejszego artykułu.
