Abstract Background Staphylococcus aureus is the predominant pathogen isolated in diabetic foot infections. Recently, the skin commensal bacterium, Helcococcus kunzii, was found to modulate the virulence of this pathogen in an in vivo model. This study aims to elucidate the molecular mechanisms underlying the interaction between these two bacterial species, using a proteomic approach. Results Our results reveal that H. kunzii can coexist and proliferate alongside S. aureus in a Chronic Wound Media (CWM), thereby mimicking an in vitro chronic wound environment. We noted that the secreted proteome of H. kunzii induced a transcriptional effect on S. aureus virulence, resulting in a decrease in the expression level of agrA, a gene involved in quorum sensing. The observed effect could be ascribed to specific proteins secreted by H. kunzii including polysaccharide deacetylase, peptidoglycan DD-metalloendopeptidase, glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, trypsin-like peptidase, and an extracellular solute-binding protein. These proteins potentially interact with the agr system, influencing S. aureus virulence. Additionally, the virulence of S. aureus was notably affected by modifications in iron-related pathways and components of cell wall architecture in the presence of H. kunzii. Furthermore, the overall metabolism of S. aureus was reduced when cocultured with H. kunzii. Conclusion Future research will focus on elucidating the role of these excreted factors in modulating virulence.

ABSTRACT The Type VI secretion system (T6SS) is a multicomponent apparatus, present in many Gram-negative bacteria, which can inhibit bacterial prey in various ecological niches. Pseudomonas aeruginosa assembles one of its three T6SS (H1-T6SS) to respond to attacks from adjacent competing bacteria. Surprisingly, repeated assemblies of the H1-T6SS, termed dueling, were described in a monoculture in the absence of an attacker strain; however, the underlying mechanism was unknown. Here, we explored the role of H2-T6SS of P. aeruginosa in triggering H1-T6SS assembly. We show that H2-T6SS inactivation in P. aeruginosa causes a significant reduction in H1-T6SS dueling and that H2-T6SS activity directly triggers retaliation by the H1-T6SS. Intraspecific competition experiments revealed that elimination of H2-T6SS in non-immune prey cells conferred protection from H1-T6SS. Moreover, we show that the H1-T6SS response is triggered independently of the characterized lipase effectors of the H2-T6SS, as well as those of Acinetobacter baylyi and Vibrio cholerae. Our results suggest that H1-T6SS response to H2-T6SS in P. aeruginosa can impact intraspecific competition, particularly when the H1-T6SS effector-immunity pairs differ between strains, and could determine the outcome of multistrain colonization.IMPORTANCEThe opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa harbors three different Type VI secretion systems (H1, H2, and H3-T6SS), which can translocate toxins that can inhibit bacterial competitors or inflict damage to eukaryotic host cells. Unlike the unregulated T6SS assembly in other Gram-negative bacteria, the H1-T6SS in P. aeruginosa is precisely assembled as a response to various cell damaging attacks from neighboring bacterial cells. Surprisingly, it was observed that neighboring P. aeruginosa cells repeatedly assemble their H1-T6SS toward each other. Mechanisms triggering this “dueling” behavior between sister cells were unknown. In this report, we used a combination of microscopy, genetic and intraspecific competition experiments to show that H2-T6SS initiates H1-T6SS dueling. Our study highlights the interplay between different T6SS clusters in P. aeruginosa, which may influence the outcomes of multistrain competition in various ecological settings such as biofilm formation and colonization of cystic fibrosis lungs.

Plant growth-promoting bacteria are commonly used in agriculture, particularly for seed inoculation. Multispecies consortia are believed to be the most promising form of these bacteria. However, designing and modeling bacterial consortia to achieve desired phenotypic outcomes in plants is challenging. This review aims to address this challenge by exploring key antimicrobial interactions. Special attention is given to approaches for developing soil plant growth-promoting bacteria consortia. Additionally, advanced omics-based methods are analyzed that allow soil microbiomes to be characterized, providing an understanding of the molecular and functional aspects of these microbial communities. A comprehensive discussion explores the utilization of bacterial preparations in biofertilizers for agricultural applications, focusing on the intricate design of synthetic bacterial consortia with these preparations. Seeds carry a complex population of pathogenic and non-pathogenic bacteria, which may have synergistic or antagonistic effects on each other and also affects their interaction with hosts. Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae (Pss) and Xanthomonas translucens (Xt) are two well-known phytopathogenic bacteria that colonize wheat seeds and cause specific symptoms of the disease on the plant. The present study aims to determine Pss community composition in wheat seeds sampled from different areas of Iran causing bacterial leaf streak disease (BLS) and investigate the effects of Pss strains that are located on/in wheat seeds on the severity of BLS disease caused by Xt. Culture-based and molecular methods detected Pss strains in epiphytic and endophytic status and X. translucens pv. cerealis as an epiphytic pathogen from all sampled wheat seeds. Sequencing analysis of the 16S rRNA gene revealed no significant variations between Pss strains. Moreover, we found that some Pss strains strongly promoted BLS disease severity index. This was increased up to 6.11 and 5.62 times after seed treatment by epiphytic Pss strain Ais 153 and endophytic strain Ais 170, respectively. The Pss strains have different ranges of autoaggregation ability and coaggregation with Xt. No significant correlation was found between the synergistic effects of Pss strains and their aggregation ability as a crucial step for bacterial interaction with each other and the host plant. Altogether, our results show the role of complex interactions of pathogenic bacteria in the emergence of seed-borne diseases. Abstract Background Staphylococcus aureus is a common cause of clinical mastitis (CM) in dairy cattle. Optimizing the bovine mammary gland microbiota to resist S. aureus colonization is a growing area of research. However, the details of the interbacterial interactions between S. aureus and commensal bacteria, which would be required to manipulate the microbiome to resist infection, are still unknown. This study aims to characterize changes in the bovine milk bacterial community before, during, and after S. aureus CM and to compare bacterial communities present in milk between infected and healthy quarters. Methods We collected quarter-level milk samples from 698 Holstein dairy cows over an entire lactation. A total of 11 quarters from 10 cows were affected by S. aureus CM and milk samples from these 10 cows (n = 583) regardless of health status were analyzed by performing 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. Results The milk microbiota of healthy quarters was distinguishable from that of S. aureus CM quarters two weeks before CM diagnosis via visual inspection. Microbial network analysis showed that 11 OTUs had negative associations with OTU0001 (Staphylococcus). A low diversity or dysbiotic milk microbiome did not necessarily correlate with increased inflammation. Specifically, Staphylococcus xylosus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Aerococcus urinaeequi were each abundant in milk from the quarters with low levels of inflammation. Conclusion Our results show that the udder microbiome is highly dynamic, yet a change in the abundance in certain bacteria can be a potential indicator of future S. aureus CM. This study has identified potential prophylactic bacterial species that could act as a barrier against S. aureus colonization and prevent future instances of S. aureus CM.

Bacterial predation impacts microbial community structures, which can have both positive and negative effects on plant and animal health and on environmental sustainability. Myxococcus xanthus is an epibiotic soil predator with a broad range of prey, including Sinorhizobium meliloti, which establishes nitrogenfixing symbiosis with legumes. During the M. xanthus-S. meliloti interaction, the predator must adapt its transcriptome to kill and lyse the target (predatosome), and the prey must orchestrate a transcriptional response (defensome) to protect itself against the biotic stress caused by the predatory attack. Here, we describe the transcriptional changes taking place in S. meliloti in response to myxobacterial predation. The results indicate that the predator induces massive changes in the prey transcriptome with up-regulation of protein synthesis and secretion, energy generation, and fatty acid (FA) synthesis, while down-regulating genes required for FA degradation and carbohydrate transport and metabolism. The reconstruction of up-regulated pathways suggests that S. meliloti modifies the cell envelop by increasing the production of different surface polysaccharides (SPSs) and membrane lipids. Besides the barrier role of SPSs, additional mechanisms involving the activity of efflux pumps and the peptide uptake transporter BacA, together with the production of H2O2 and formaldehyde have been unveiled. Also, the induction of the iron-uptake machinery in both predator and prey reflects a strong competition for this metal. With this research we complete the characterization of the complex transcriptional changes that occur during the M. xanthus-S. meliloti interaction, which can impact the establishment of beneficial symbiosis with legumes. BackgroundUnderstanding microbial interactions in engineering bioprocesses is important to enhance and optimize performance outcomes and requires dissection of the multi-layer complexities of microbial communities. However, unraveling microbial interactions as well as substrates involved in complex microbial communities is a challenging task. Here, we demonstrate an integrated approach of metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and targeted metabolite analysis to identify the substrates involved in interspecies interactions from a potential cross-feeding model community-bisphenol A (BPA)-biodegrading community, aiming to establish an identification method of microbial interactions in engineering or environmental bioprocesses.ResultsThe community-level BPA-metabolic pathway was constructed using integrated metagenomics and targeted metabolite analyses. The dynamics of active functions and metabolism of major community members were identified using metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses in concert. Correlating the community BPA biodegradation performance to the individual bacterial activities enabled the discovery of substrates involved in a synergistic interaction of cross-feeding between BPA-degrading Sphingonomas species and intermediate users, Pseudomonas sp. and Pusillimonas sp. This proposed synergistic interaction was confirmed by the co-culture of a Sphingonomas sp. and Pseudomonas sp. isolates, which demonstrated enhanced BPA biodegradation compared to the isolate of Sphingonomas sp. alone.ConclusionThe three types of integrated meta-omics analyses effectively revealed the metabolic capability at both community-wide and individual bacterial levels. The correlation between these two levels revealed the hidden connection between apparent overall community performance and the contributions of individual community members and their interactions in a BPA-degrading microbial community. In addition, we demonstrated that using integrated multi-omics in conjunction with culture-based confirmation approach is effective to elucidate the microbial interactions affecting the performance outcome. We foresee this approach would contribute the future application and operation of environmental bioprocesses on a knowledge-based control.

Most biofilms within the food industry are formed by multiple bacterial species which co-exist on surfaces as a result of interspecies interactions. These ecological interactions often make these communities tolerant against antimicrobials. Our previous work led to the identification of a large number (327) of highly diverse bacterial species on food contact surfaces of the dairy, meat, and egg industries after routine cleaning and disinfection (C&D) regimes. In the current study, biofilm-forming ability of 92 bacterial strains belonging to 26 genera and 42 species was assessed and synergistic interactions in biofilm formation were investigated by coculturing species in all possible four-species combinations. Out of the total 455 four-species biofilm combinations, greater biofilm mass production, compared to the sum of biofilm masses of individual species in monoculture, was observed in 34 combinations. Around half of the combinations showed synergy in biofilm mass > 1.5-fold and most of the combinations belonged to dairy strains. The highest synergy (3.13-fold) was shown by a combination of dairy strains comprising Stenotrophomonas rhizophila, Bacillus licheniformis, Microbacterium lacticum, and Calidifontibacter indicus. The observed synergy in mixed biofilms turned out to be strain-specific rather than species-dependent. All biofilm combinations showing remarkable synergy appeared to have certain common species in all combinations which shows there are keystone industryspecific bacterial species which stimulate synergy or antagonism and this may have implication for biofilm control in the concerned food industries. Antibiotic secretion plays a pivotal role in bacterial interference competition; yet, the impact of environmental hydration conditions on such competition is not well understood. Here, we investigate how hydration conditions affect interference competition among bacteria, studying the interactions between the antibiotic-producing Bacillus velezensis FZB42 and two bacterial strains susceptible to its antibiotics: Xanthomonas euvesicatoria 85-10 and Pseudomonas syringae DC3000. Our results show that wet-dry cycles significantly modify the response of the susceptible bacteria to both the supernatant and cells of the antibiotic-producing bacteria, compared to constantly wet conditions. Notably , X. euvesicatoria shows increased protection against both the cells and supernatants of B. velezensis under wet-dry cycles, while P. syringae cells become more susceptible under wet-dry cycles. In addition, we observed a reciprocal interaction between P. syringae and B. velezensis , where P. syringae inhibits B. velezensis under wet conditions. Our findings highlight the important role of hydration conditions in shaping bacterial interference competition, providing valuable insights into the microbial ecology of water-unsaturated surfaces, with implications for applications such as biological control of plant pathogens and mitigating antibiotic resistance.IMPORTANCEOur study reveals that hydration conditions, particularly wet-dry cycles, significantly influence antibiotic-mediated competition between bacterial species. We revealed that the effectiveness of antibiotics produced by Bacillus velezensis against two susceptible bacterial species: Xanthomonas and Pseudomonas varies based on these hydration conditions. Unlike traditional laboratory environments, many real-world habitats, such as soil, plant surfaces, and even animal skin, undergo frequent wet-dry cycles. These conditions affect bacterial competition dynamics and outcomes, with wet-dry cycles providing increased protection for some bacteria while making others more susceptible. Our findings highlight the importance of considering environmental hydration when studying microbial interactions and developing biological control strategies. This research has important implications for improving agricultural practices and understanding natural microbial ecosystems.

The Black Queen hypothesis describes the evolutionary strategy to lose costly functions in favour of improving growth efficiency. This results in mutants (cheaters) becoming obligately dependent upon a provider (black queen) to produce a necessary resource. Previous analyses demonstrate black queens and cheaters reach a state of equilibrium in pair-wise systems. However, in complex communities, accumulation of cheaters likely poses a serious burden on shared resources. This should result in a Tragedy of the Commons (ToC), whereby over-utilisation of public resources risks making them growth-limiting. With a collection of differential equations, microbial communities composed of twenty prokaryote 'species' either from rhizosphere, characterised by abundant carbon and energy sources, or bulk soil, with limited carbon and energy supply, were simulated. Functional trait groups differed based on combinations of cellulase and amino acid production, growth and resource uptake. Randomly generated communities were thus composed of species that acted as cellulolytic prototrophic black queens, groups that were either cellulolytic or prototrophic, or non-cellulolytic auxotrophic cheaters. Groups could evolve to lose functions over time. Biomass production and biodiversity were tracked in 8,000 Monte Carlo simulations over 500 generations. Bulk soil favoured oligotrophic co-operative communities where biodiversity was positively associated with growth. Rhizosphere favoured copiotrophic cheaters. The most successful functional group across both environments was neither black queens nor cheaters, but those that balanced providing an essential growth-limiting function at a relatively low maintenance cost. Accumulation of loss of function mutants in bulk soil risked resulting in loss of cumulative growth by ToC, while cumulative growth increased in the rhizosphere. In the bulk soil, oligotrophic adaptations assisted species in avoiding extinction. This demonstrated that loss of function by mutation is a successful evolutionary strategy in host-associated and/or resource-rich environments, but poses a risk to communities that must co-operate with each other for mutual co-existence. It was concluded that microbial communities must follow different evolutionary and community assembly strategies in bulk soil versus rhizosphere, with bulk soil communities more dependent on traits that promote co-operative interactions between microbial species. Indwelling urinary catheterization can lead to the development of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs), an important type of nosocomial infection, as well as other medical issues among institutionalized adults. Recently, Proteus mirabilis was highlighted as the important cause of CAUTIs. The pathogenicity of P. mirabilis is dependent on two multicellular types of surface colonization: the adherence and swarming motility. Adhesion, mostly mediated by fimbria! and nonfimbrial adhesins, is important for the initiation of biofilm formation. Moreover, the production of urease frequently results in biofilm crystallization, which leads to the blockage of catheters. The heterologous polymeric matrix of the biofi lm offers protection against antibiotics and the host immune system. P. mirabilis displays remarkable motility abilities. After contact with solid surfaces, hyper-flagellated cells are able to rapidly migrate. The importance of swarming motility in CAUTIs development remains controversial; however, it was indicated that swarming cells were able to co-express other virulence factors. Furthermore, flagella are strong immunomodulating proteins. Recently, Proteus mirabilis was highlighted as the important cause of CAUTIs. The pathogenicity of P. mirabilis is dependent on two multicellular types of surface colonization: the adherence and swarming motility. Adhesion, mostly mediated by fimbrial and nonfimbrial adhesins, is important for the initiation of biofilm formation. Moreover, the production of urease frequently results in biofilm crystallization, which leads to the blockage of catheters. The heterologous polymeric matrix of the biofilm offers protection against antibiotics and the host immune system. P. mirabilis displays remarkable motility abilities. After contact with solid surfaces, hyper-flagellated cells are able to rapidly migrate. The importance of swarming motility in CAUTIs development remains controversial; however, it was indicated that swarming cells were able to co-express other virulence factors. Furthermore, flagella are strong immunomodulating proteins. On the other hand, both biofilm formation and swarming motility implicates multiple inter- and intraspecies interactions, which might contribute to the pathogenicity.

Bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has emerged as a significant concern worldwide. The microbial community profile and potential AMR level in aquaculture ponds are often undervalued and attract less attention than other aquatic environments. We used amplicon and metagenomic shotgun sequencing to study microbial communities and AMR in six freshwater polyculture ponds in rural and urban areas of Bangladesh. Amplicon sequencing revealed different community structures between rural and urban ponds, with urban ponds having a higher bacterial diversity and opportunistic pathogens including Streptococcus , Staphylococcus , and Corynebacterium. Despite proteobacterial dominance, Firmicutes was the most interactive in the community network, especially in the urban ponds. Metagenomes showed that drug resistance was the most common type of AMR found, while metal resistance was only observed in urban ponds. AMR and metal resistance genes were found mainly in beta and gamma-proteobacteria in urban ponds, while AMR was found primarily in alpha-proteobacteria in rural ponds. We identified potential pathogens with a high profile of AMR and metal resistance in urban aquaculture ponds. As these ponds provide a significant source of protein for humans, our results raise significant concerns for the environmental sustainability of this food source and the dissemination of AMR into the food chain. The bacterial diversity in terms of structure and community profile, with special reference to water quality in the wastewater treatment plant of Indian paper industries, is poorly understood. In the present work, characterization of bacterial diversity using 16S (V3-V4 region) rRNA gene amplicon sequencing data with reference to physicochemical parameters in the wastewater treatment plant of two paper industries has been carried out. Amplicon data analysis revealed the presence of bacterial taxa belonging to the phylum such as Bacteroidetes, Proteobacteria, Patescibacteria, Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, etc. Further, taxonomic classification upto genus level and functional analysis data indicated that genera such as Cloacibacterium, Aerococcus, Chryseobacterium, Microbacterium, Acinetobacter, Sphingobium, etc., were involved in the predicted metabolic pathways like carbohydrate metabolism, fatty acid and aromatic compounds biosynthesis as well as degradation. Canonical correspondence analysis confirmed a significant correlation between the microbial pollutions loads and physicochemical parameters. Further, the chemical oxygen demand, biochemical oxygen demand and total suspended solids exceeded the acceptable limits prescribed by Central Pollution Control Board New Delhi, Government of India, for discharge of wastewater. This study finds the correlation between the bacterial community residing in the polluted water of wastewater treatment plant and their environmental preferences. The presence of these bacterial diversity in the wastewater treatment plant of paper industries may affect the maintenance as well as paper quality. Purpose: Given the vast microorganisms and infertile resources in the soil, nutritional resources would be a focal point of bacterial competition. Microbes could quickly capture the nutrition to outcompete their competitors or efficiently cross-feed to cooperate with other bacterial species. However, how interspecies trophic patterns shape the bacterial interactions in the co-occurrence network remains unclear. This study investigates the role of trophic patterns, containing niche overlap and nestedness, on the bacterial relationships in the co-occurrence network structure. Materials and methods: We assessed the correlation between bacterial interactions and trophic patterns according to high-throughput techniques and culturomics. A co-occurrence network was constructed to obtain the relationship of OTUs. The substrate consumption patterns of culturable bacteria were used to calculate the interspecies trophic patterns. Results and discussion: The co-occurrence network was constructed by the thirty-three culturable bacteria that matched 33 OTUs with 112 links in total. The negative correlation pairs possessed a higher niche overlap than the positive correlations pairs. However, negative and positive correlation pairs displayed no significant differences in the niche nestedness. Interestingly, we found substrate types could also influence microbial interactions. Elucidating the association between the trophic patterns and interspecies interaction is crucial for comprehending the resource's role and contribution to the microbial community. Conclusion: Together, these findings indicate that interspecies trophic patterns, such as niche overlap, could be a predictor to understand the bacterial relationships in the co-occurrence network. Objective. To identify bacterial interactions at the site of infection in cystic fibrosis patients and to assess their possible effects on the course of infection. Materials and Methods. The following strains were used in this study: Alcaligenes faecalis LGBP strain, isolated from the environment; clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa; Achromobacter xylosoxidans, Acinetobacter baumannii, Alcaligenes faecalis, and Bacillus subtilis strains; the standard laboratory P. aeruginosa PAO1 strain and its lysogens by temperate bacteriophages of various species, and its phageresistant mutants. Imaging and evaluation of the effects of bacterial interaction was performed in an in vitro co-infection with A. faecalis LGBP and the tested strains. Results. The bacteria of A. faecalis which are often involved in the lung co-infection in cystic fibrosis have been shown to stimulate the growth of most of the tested P. aeruginosa strains, as well as bacteria of some other species (for example, B. subtilis). The interspecies interactions pattern depends primarily on the strain of A. faecalis and physiological features of the infecting P. aeruginosa strains. When growing concurrently, the contacts between bacteria may change both the physical properties of the contacting bacteria surface (propagation rate) and the course of biochemical reactions in the contacting bacteria (occurrence of pigmentation, change in auto-plaquing pattern, reduction in alginate production). Conclusions. The results suggest that visually recognizable interactions are similar to the interactions of A. faecalis LGBP, exhibited in vitro with clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa, may influence on the course of chronic infections and their treatment results. Expanding of model studies of bacterial interspecies interactions may contribute to better understanding of their molecular mechanism that may be useful for optimizing therapy

The Type VI secretion system (T6SS) is a multicomponent apparatus, present in many Gram-negative bacteria, which can inhibit bacterial prey in various ecological niches. Pseudomonas aeruginosa assembles one of its three T6SS (H1-T6SS) to respond to attacks from adjacent competing bacteria. Surprisingly, repeated assemblies of the H1-T6SS, termed dueling, were described in a monoculture in the absence of an attacker strain; however, the underlying mechanism was unknown. Here, we explored the role of H2-T6SS of P. aeruginosa in triggering H1-T6SS assembly. We show that H2-T6SS inactivation in P. aeruginosa causes a significant reduction in H1-T6SS dueling and that H2-T6SS activity directly triggers retaliation by the H1-T6SS. Intraspecific competition experiments revealed that elimination of H2-T6SS in non-immune prey cells conferred protection from H1-T6SS. Moreover, we show that the H1-T6SS response is triggered independently of the characterized lipase effectors of the H2-T6SS, as well as those of Acinetobacter baylyi and Vibrio cholerae . Our results suggest that H1-T6SS response to H2-T6SS in P. aeruginosa can impact intraspecific competition, particularly when the H1-T6SS effector-immunity pairs differ between strains, and could determine the outcome of multistrain colonization.IMPORTANCEThe opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa harbors three different Type VI secretion systems (H1, H2, and H3-T6SS), which can translocate toxins that can inhibit bacterial competitors or inflict damage to eukaryotic host cells. Unlike the unregulated T6SS assembly in other Gram-negative bacteria, the H1-T6SS in P. aeruginosa is precisely assembled as a response to various cell damaging attacks from neighboring bacterial cells. Surprisingly, it was observed that neighboring P. aeruginosa cells repeatedly assemble their H1-T6SS toward each other. Mechanisms triggering this "dueling" behavior between sister cells were unknown. In this report, we used a combination of microscopy, genetic and intraspecific competition experiments to show that H2-T6SS initiates H1-T6SS dueling. Different sugarcane cultivars are grown to produce renewable energy and sugar in China. However, we have a limited awareness of the interactive influence of varying sugarcane cultivars on rhizosphere bacterial structure and diversity. Assessing cultivar choice impact on soil bacterial communities is vital since bacterial taxa are frequently impacted by planting performance. Employing high-throughput Illumina sequencing, we examined bacterial communities' assemblage in the rhizosphere of six Chinese sugarcane cultivars (Regan14-62, Guitang 08-120, Haizhe 22, Guitang 08-1180, Taitang 22 and Liucheng 05-136). Our results indicated that different sugarcane cultivars have no significant influence on the Shannon index; however, their impact on richness was substantial. There was a difference in the bacterial community structure that is also associated with a change in the community composition, as determined by the DESeq2 results, suggesting that "Haizhe 22 (HZ22)" had a completely different beta diversity as compared to other five cultivars by enriching abundance of Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, Gemmatimonadetes, Saccharibacteria and Bacteroidetes and reducing the quantity of Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, Acidobacteria, and Planctomycetes, respectively. The HZ22 rhizosphere significantly enriched six genera (e.g., Devosia, Mizugakiibacter, Mycobacterium, Nakamurella, Rhizomicrobium, and Virgibacillus) relative to other varieties, suggesting an important role in plant disease tolerance and growth development, including soil nutrient cycling and bioremediation. Analysis of similarity (ANOSIM) and correlation analysis revealed that cultivars, soil organic matter, pH and soil moisture were central factors influencing bacterial composition. These findings may help in selection of plant cultivars capable of supporting highly abundant specific beneficial microbial groups, improving plant disease resistance, growth stimulation, and soil bioremediation capabilities, further leading to improvements in breeding strategies. Microbial invasions can compromise ecosystem services and spur dysbiosis and disease in hosts. Nevertheless, the mechanisms determining invasion outcomes often remain unclear. Here, we examine the role of iron‐scavenging siderophores in driving invasions of Pseudomonas aeruginosa into resident communities of environmental pseudomonads. Siderophores can be 'public goods' by delivering iron to individuals possessing matching receptors; but they can also be 'public bads' by withholding iron from competitors lacking these receptors. Accordingly, siderophores should either promote or impede invasion, depending on their effects on invader and resident growth. Using supernatant feeding and invasion assays, we show that invasion success indeed increased when the invader could use its siderophores to inhibit (public bad) rather than stimulate (public good) resident growth. Conversely, invasion success decreased the more the invader was inhibited by the residents' siderophores. ABSTRACT Interspecies interactions are known to activate specialized metabolism in diverse actinomycetes. However, how interspecies cues are sensed and ultimately lead to induction of specialized metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters remains largely unexplored. Using transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq), we analyzed genes that were transcriptionally induced in the model actinomycete Streptomyces coelicolor during interactions with four different actinomycetes, including genes that encode unusual regulatory systems known as conservons. Deletions in one such system, encoded by the cvn8 genes, led to altered patterns of pigmented antibiotic production by S. coelicolor during interactions. Further transcriptomic analysis of mutants lacking each of the five genes in the cvn8 locus demonstrated that this system is a global regulator of at least four different specialized metabolite biosynthetic pathways. How conservon systems work at the mechanistic level to regulate gene expression is not well understood, although it has been hypothesized that they may function in a way similar to eukaryotic G-protein-coupled receptors. The data presented here indicate that the gene products of the cvnA8 and cvnF8 (SCO6939) genes likely function together in one part of the Cvn8 signaling cascade, while the cvnC8 and cvnD8 gene products likely function together in another part. Importantly, because cvnD8 likely encodes a Ras-like GTPase, these results connect G-protein-mediated signaling to gene regulation in a bacterium. Additionally, deletion of any of the cvn8 genes led to abnormally high expression of an adjacent cryptic lanthipeptide biosynthetic gene cluster, indicating that conservon systems may be fruitful targets for manipulation to activate silent specialized metabolite biosynthetic pathways. IMPORTANCE Interactions between different species of actinomycete bacteria often trigger one of the strains to produce specialized metabolites, such as antibiotics. However, how this induction occurs at the genetic level is poorly understood. Using transcriptomic methods, we show that an unusual regulatory system, known as a conservon system, is responsible for regulating expression of multiple specialized metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters in the organism Streptomyces coelicolor during interactions. Conservon systems are unusual because they appear to employ small GTPases as an important component of their signaling cascades. Small GTPases are common in eukaryotic signaling pathways, but the results presented here are notable since they implicate a system that includes a small GTPase in global gene regulation in a bacterium. Mutants lacking this conservon system also showed abnormally high expression of a gene cluster involved in making an unknown specialized metabolite, suggesting that conservon mutants might be useful for driving natural product discovery.

The rhizosphere is a dynamic region governed by complex microbial interactions where diffusible communication signals produced by bacteria continuously shape the gene expression patterns of individual species and regulate fundamental traits for adaptation to the rhizosphere environment. Lysobacter spp. are common bacterial inhabitants of the rhizosphere and have been frequently associated with soil disease suppressiveness. However, little is known about their ecology and how diffusible communication signals might affect their behavior in the rhizosphere. To shed light on the aspects determining rhizosphere competence and functioning of Lysobacter spp., we carried out a functional and transcriptome analysis on the plant beneficial bacterium Lysobacter capsici AZ78 (AZ78) grown in the presence of the most common diffusible communication signals released by rhizosphere bacteria. Mining the genome of AZ78 and other Lysobacter spp. showed that Lysobacter spp. share genes involved in the production and perception of diffusible signal factors, indole, diffusible factors, and N-acyl-homoserine lactones. Most of the tested diffusible communication signals (i.e., indole and glyoxylic acid) influenced the ability of AZ78 to inhibit the growth of the phytopathogenic oomycete Pythium ultimum and the Gram-positive bacterium Rhodococcus fascians. Moreover, RNA-Seq analysis revealed that nearly 21% of all genes in AZ78 genome were modulated by diffusible communication signals. 13-Methyltetradecanoic acid, glyoxylic acid, and 2,3-butanedione positively influenced the expression of genes related to type IV pilus, which might enable AZ78 to rapidly colonize the rhizosphere. Moreover, glyoxylic acid and 2,3-butanedione downregulated tRNA genes, possibly as a result of the elicitation of biological stress responses. On its behalf, indole downregulated genes related to type IV pilus and the heat-stable antifungal factor, which might result in impairment of twitching motility and antibiotic production in AZ78. These results show that diffusible communication signals may affect the ecology of Lysobacter spp. in the rhizosphere and suggest that diffusible communication signals might be used to foster rhizosphere colonization and functioning of plant beneficial bacteria belonging to the genus Lysobacter.

Abstract Background Understanding microbial interactions in engineering bioprocesses is important to enhance and optimize performance outcomes and requires dissection of the multi-layer complexities of microbial communities. However, unraveling microbial interactions as well as substrates involved in complex microbial communities is a challenging task. Here, we demonstrate an integrated approach of metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and targeted metabolite analysis to identify the substrates involved in interspecies interactions from a potential cross-feeding model community—bisphenol A (BPA)-biodegrading community, aiming to establish an identification method of microbial interactions in engineering or environmental bioprocesses. Results The community-level BPA-metabolic pathway was constructed using integrated metagenomics and targeted metabolite analyses. The dynamics of active functions and metabolism of major community members were identified using metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analyses in concert. Correlating the community BPA biodegradation performance to the individual bacterial activities enabled the discovery of substrates involved in a synergistic interaction of cross-feeding between BPA-degrading Sphingonomas species and intermediate users, Pseudomonas sp. and Pusillimonas sp. This proposed synergistic interaction was confirmed by the co-culture of a Sphingonomas sp. and Pseudomonas sp. isolates, which demonstrated enhanced BPA biodegradation compared to the isolate of Sphingonomas sp. alone. Conclusion The three types of integrated meta-omics analyses effectively revealed the metabolic capability at both community-wide and individual bacterial levels. The correlation between these two levels revealed the hidden connection between apparent overall community performance and the contributions of individual community members and their interactions in a BPA-degrading microbial community. In addition, we demonstrated that using integrated multi-omics in conjunction with culture-based confirmation approach is effective to elucidate the microbial interactions affecting the performance outcome. We foresee this approach would contribute the future application and operation of environmental bioprocesses on a knowledge-based control.

Mortierellaceae species are among the most frequent and globally distributed soil fungi. However, the factors shaping their diversity and distribution remain obscure. Several species have been reported to be associated to bacteria, but the kind and frequency of such associations were not addressed up to now. We hypothesized that such associations could be important for Mortierellaceae ecology. Therefore, our aim was to understand the driving factors responsible for the Mortierellaceae diversity, community composition and bacterial associations in alpine and subalpine habitats. For answering our question, we collected both snow-free and snow-covered soil at sampling sites from different habitats: bare alpine soil in a glacier forefield, alpine dwarf-willow habitats, and high-altitude Pinus cembra forests. The isolations were carried out by direct cultivation without any antibiotics to the isolation media. Altogether, we obtained 389 Mortierellaceae isolates representing 29 operational taxonomic units (OTUs). Many OTUs could be placed to the genera Mortierella sensu stricto, Dissophora, Entomortierella, Gamsiella, Linnemannia, and Podila, but others could not unambiguously be assigned to a genus. Our results demonstrate that both, the distribution as well as the diversity of the Mortierellaceae species, were significantly influenced by habitat, soil pH, and snow-cover. We noticed that >30% of our isolates were associated to a non-contaminant bacterium. The bacteria associated to our Mortierellaceae isolates belonged to seven different genera. Pseudomonas was the most frequently detected genus associated to the isolated Mortierellaceae species and it was found to be species-specific. Mortierellaceae–bacteria pairs, including those with Pseudomonas, were influenced by location, habitat, and snow-cover. The majority of the fungus–bacterium associations were potentially epihyphal, but we also detected potential endohyphal bacterial species belonging to Mycoavidus, Burkholderiaceae, and Paraburkholderia. Taken together, the non-random associations we detected suggest that fungus–bacterium associations are ecologically meaningful – an interesting path that needs to be investigated further.

Summary: Bacterial communities are in a continuous adaptive and evolutionary race for survival. In this work we expand our knowledge on the chemical interplay and specific mutations that modulate the transition from antagonism to co-existence between two plant-beneficial bacteria, Pseudomonas chlororaphis PCL1606 and Bacillus amyloliquefaciens FZB42. We reveal that the bacteriostatic activity of bacillaene produced by Bacillus relies on an interaction with the protein elongation factor FusA of P. chlororaphis and how mutations in this protein lead to tolerance to bacillaene and other protein translation inhibitors. Additionally, we describe how the unspecific tolerance of B. amyloliquefaciens to antimicrobials associated with mutations in the glycerol kinase GlpK is provoked by a decrease of Bacillus cell membrane permeability, among other pleiotropic responses. We conclude that nutrient specialization and mutations in basic biological functions are bacterial adaptive dynamics that lead to the coexistence of two primary competitive bacterial species rather than their mutual eradication.

The human body harbors numerous populations of microorganisms in various ecological niches. Some of these microbial niches, such as the human gut and the respiratory system, are well studied. One system that has been understudied is the urinary tract, primarily because it has been considered sterile in the absence of infection. Thanks to modern sequencing and enhanced culture techniques, it is now known that a urinary microbiota exists. The implication is that these species live as communities in the urinary tract, forming microbial ecosystems. However, the interactions between species in such an ecosystem remains unknown. Various studies in different parts of the human body have highlighted the ability of the pre-existing microbiota to alter the course of infection by impacting the pathogenicity of bacteria either directly or indirectly. For the urinary tract, the effect of the resident microbiota on uropathogens and the phenotypic microbial interactions is largely unknown. No studies have yet measured the response of uropathogens to the resident urinary bacteria. In this study, we investigate the interactions between uropathogens, isolated from elderly individuals suffering from UTIs, and bacteria isolated from the urinary tract of asymptomatic individuals using growth measurements in conditioned media. We observed that bacteria isolated from individuals with UTI-like symptoms and bacteria isolated from asymptomatic individuals can affect each other’s growth; for example, bacteria isolated from symptomatic individuals affect the growth of bacteria isolated from asymptomatic individuals more negatively than vice versa. Additionally, we show that Gram-positive bacteria alter the growth characteristics differently compared to Gram-negative bacteria. Our results are an early step in elucidating the role of microbial interactions in urinary microbial ecosystems that harbor both uropathogens and pre-existing microbiota.

We noticed that >30% of our isolates were associated to a non-contaminant bacterium. The bacteria associated to our Mortierellaceae isolates belonged to seven different genera. Pseudomonas was the most frequently detected genus associated to the isolated Mortierellaceae species and it was found to be species-specific. Mortierellaceae–bacteria pairs, including those with Pseudomonas , were influenced by location, habitat, and snow-cover. The majority of the fungus–bacterium associations were potentially epihyphal, but we also detected potential endohyphal bacterial species belonging to Mycoavidus, Burkholderiaceae , and Paraburkholderia. Taken together, the non-random associations we detected suggest that fungus–bacterium associations are ecologically meaningful – an interesting path that needs to be investigated further. Biofilms are the predominant bacterial lifestyle and can protect microorganisms from environmental stresses. Multispecies biofilms can affect the survival of enteric pathogens that contaminate food products, and thus, investigating the underlying mechanisms of multispecies biofilms is essential for food safety and human health. In this study, we investigated the ability of the natural isolate Bacillus subtilis PS-216 to restrain Campylobacter jejuni biofilm formation and adhesion to abiotic surfaces as well as to disrupt preestablished C. jejuni biofilms. Using confocal laser scanning microscopy and colony counts, we demonstrate that the presence of B. subtilis PS-216 prevents C. jejuni biofilm formation, decreases growth of the pathogen by 4.2 log10, and disperses 26-h-old preestablished C. jejuni biofilms. Furthermore, the coinoculation of B. subtilis and C. jejuni interferes with the adhesion of C. jejuni to abiotic surfaces, reducing it by 2.4 log10. We also show that contact-independent mechanisms contribute to the inhibitory effect of B. subtilis PS-216 on C. jejuni biofilm. Using B. subtilis mutants in genes coding for nonribosomal peptides and polyketides revealed that bacillaene significantly contributes to the inhibitory effect of B. subtilis PS-216. In summary, we show a strong potential for the use of B. subtilis PS-216 against C. jejuni biofilm formation and adhesion to abiotic surfaces. The human body harbors numerous populations of microorganisms in various ecological niches. Some of these microbial niches, such as the human gut and the respiratory system, are well studied. One system that has been understudied is the urinary tract, primarily because it has been considered sterile in the absence of infection. Thanks to modern sequencing and enhanced culture techniques, it is now known that a urinary microbiota exists. The implication is that these species live as communities in the urinary tract, forming microbial ecosystems. However, the interactions between species in such an ecosystem remains unknown. Various studies in different parts of the human body have highlighted the ability of the pre-existing microbiota to alter the course of infection by impacting the pathogenicity of bacteria either directly or indirectly. For the urinary tract, the effect of the resident microbiota on uropathogens and the phenotypic microbial interactions is largely unknown. No studies have yet measured the response of uropathogens to the resident urinary bacteria. In this study, we investigate the interactions between uropathogens, isolated from elderly individuals suffering from UTIs, and bacteria isolated from the urinary tract of asymptomatic individuals using growth measurements in conditioned media. We observed that bacteria isolated from individuals with UTI-like symptoms and bacteria isolated from asymptomatic individuals can affect each other's growth; for example, bacteria isolated from symptomatic individuals affect the growth of bacteria isolated from asymptomatic individuals more negatively than vice versa. Additionally, we show that Gram-positive bacteria alter the growth characteristics differently compared to Gram-negative bacteria. Our results are an early step in elucidating the role of microbial interactions in urinary microbial ecosystems that harbor both uropathogens and pre-existing microbiota. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Existence of most bacterial species, in natural, industrial, and clinical settings in the form of surface-adhered communities or biofilms has been well acknowledged for decades. Research predominantly focusses on single-species biofilms as these are relatively easy to study. However, microbiologists are now interested in studying multispecies biofilms and revealing interspecific interactions in these communities because of the existence of a plethora of different bacterial species together in almost all natural settings. Multispecies biofilms-led emergent properties are triggered by bacterial social interactions which have huge implication for research and practical knowledge useful for the control and manipulation of these microbial communities. Here, we discuss some important bacterial interactions that take place in multispecies biofilm communities and provide insights into community-wide changes that indicate bacterial interactions and elucidate underlying mechanisms. Characterising within-host microbial interactions is essential to understand the drivers that shape these interactions and their consequences for host ecology and evolution. Here, we examined the bacterial microbiota hosted by the seabird soft tick Ornithodoros maritimus (Argasidae) in order to uncover bacterial interactions within ticks and how these interactions change over tick development. Bacterial communities were characterised through next-generation sequencing of the V3–V4 hypervariable region of the bacterial 16S ribosomal RNA gene. Bacterial co-occurrence and co-exclusion were determined by analysing networks generated from the metagenomic data obtained at each life stage. Overall, the microbiota of O. maritimus was dominated by four bacterial genera, namely Coxiella, Rickettsia, Brevibacterium and Arsenophonus, representing almost 60% of the reads. Bacterial diversity increased over tick development, and adult male ticks showed higher diversity than did adult female ticks. Bacterial networks showed that co-occurrence was more frequent than co-exclusion and highlighted substantial shifts across tick life stages; interaction networks changed from one stage to the next with a steady increase in the number of interactions through development. Although many bacterial interactions appeared unstable across life stages, some were maintained throughout development and were found in both sexes, such as Coxiella and Arsenophonus. Our data support the existence of a few stable interactions in O. maritimus ticks, on top of which bacterial taxa accumulate from hosts and/or the environment during development. Several mathematical models have been developed to understand the interactions of microorganisms in foods and predict their growth. The resulting model equations for the growth of interacting cells include several parameters that must be determined for the specific conditions to be modeled. In this study, these parameters were determined by using inverse engineering and a multi-objective optimization procedure that allows fitting more than one experimental growth curve simultaneously. A genetic algorithm was applied to obtain the best parameter values of a model that permit the construction of the front of Pareto with 50 individuals or phenotypes. The method was applied to three experimental data sets of simultaneous growth of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) and Listeria monocytogenes (LM). Then, the proposed method was compared with a conventional mono-objective sequential fit. We concluded that the multi-objective fit by the genetic algorithm gives superior results with more parameter identifiability than the conventional sequential approach. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ABSTRACT Metal-based antimicrobials have been used for thousands of years to treat and prevent bacterial infections. Currently, both silver and copper are used in health care and industry to prevent and treat the spread of harmful bacteria. However, like most antimicrobial agents, their efficacy against polymicrobial infections has not been fully elucidated. Coinfection with Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus and the resulting interactions have been implicated in higher virulence, antibiotic resistance, and increased chronic infections. Here, the influence of secreted compounds from P. aeruginosa on metal antimicrobial tolerance in S. aureus was examined. This study determined that multiple compounds from P. aeruginosa increase the tolerance of S. aureus to copper and/or silver when cultured in simulated wound fluid. The presence of these secreted compounds from P. aeruginosa during exposure of S. aureus to copper or silver increased the MIC from 500 μM to 2,000 μM for copper and 16 to 63 μM for silver. The contribution of specific compounds to S. aureus tolerance was determined using gene deletion and disruption mutants, and metabolite analysis. Compounds identified as potential contributors were then individually added to S. aureus during metal exposure. Copper tolerance in S. aureus was found to be increased by amino acids and dihydroaeruginoate (Dha) secreted by P. aeruginosa. The silver tolerance provided to S. aureus was influenced only by two amino acids, serine and threonine, as well as the Pseudomonas quinolone signal (PQS) molecules from P. aeruginosa. IMPORTANCE Alternative antimicrobials, such as metals, are one of the methods currently used to help mitigate antibiotic resistance. Metal-based antimicrobials such as copper and silver are used currently both to prevent and to treat infections. Although the efficacy of these antimicrobials has been determined in single-species culture, bacteria rarely exist in a single-species group in the environment. Both Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus are often found associated with each other in severe chronic infections displaying increased virulence and antibiotic tolerance. In this study, we determined that multiple compounds secreted by P. aeruginosa are able to increase the tolerance of S. aureus to both copper and silver. This work demonstrates the expansive chemical communication occurring in polymicrobial infections between bacteria.

In stratified lakes, methane-oxidizing bacteria (MOB) are strongly mitigating methane fluxes to the atmosphere by consuming methane entering the water column from the sediments. MOB communities in lakes are diverse and vertically structured, but their spatio-temporal dynamics along the water column as well as physico-chemical parameters and interactions with other bacterial species that drive the community assembly have so far not been explored in depth. Here, we present a detailed investigation of the MOB and bacterial community composition and a large set of physico-chemical parameters in a shallow, seasonally stratified, and sub-alpine lake. Four highly resolved vertical profiles were sampled in three different years and during various stages of development of the stratified water column. Non-randomly assembled MOB communities were detected in all compartments. We could identify methane and oxygen gradients and physico-chemical parameters like pH, light, available copper and iron, and total dissolved nitrogen as important drivers of the MOB community structure. In addition, MOB were well-integrated into a bacterial-environmental network. Partial redundancy analysis of the relevance network of physico-chemical variables and bacteria explained up to 84% of the MOB abundances. Spatio-temporal MOB community changes were 51% congruent with shifts in the total bacterial community and 22% of variance in MOB abundances could be explained exclusively by the bacterial community composition. Our results show that microbial interactions may play an important role in structuring the MOB community along the depth gradient of stratified lakes.

ABSTRACT Soil microbial community assembly is crucial for understanding the mechanisms of microbial communities that regulate ecosystem-level functioning. The relative contributions of stochastic and deterministic processes to microbial community assembly remain poorly defined, and major questions exist concerning the soil organic carbon (SOC) dynamics of microbial community assembly in deep soil. Here, the bacterial community assembly processes were explored across five soil profile depths (up to 80 cm) during a 15-year field experiment involving four fertilization regimes. We found that the bacterial community assembly was initially governed by deterministic selection in topsoil but was progressively structured by increasing stochastic dispersal with depth. The migration rate (m) and β-null deviation pattern supported the hypothesis of a relatively greater influence of dispersal in deep soil, which was correlated with bacterial community assembly by stochastic processes. These changes in the entire community assembly reflected consistent assembly processes of the two most dominant phyla, Acidobacteria and Chloroflexi. Structural equation modeling showed that soil features (pH and total phosphorus) and bacterial interactions (competition and network complexity) were significantly related to bacterial community assembly in the 0-to-10-cm and 10-to-20-cm layers. Partial Mantel tests, structural equation modeling, and random forest modeling consistently indicated a strong and significant correlation between bacterial community assemblages and SOC dynamics, implying that bacterial assembly processes would potentially suppress SOC metabolism and mineralization when the contributions of stochastic dispersal to communities increased in deeper layers. Our results have important implications for integrating bacterial community assembly processes into the predictions of SOC dynamics. IMPORTANCE We have provided a framework to better understand the mechanisms governing the balance between stochastic and deterministic processes and to integrate the shifts in community assembly processes with microbial carbon metabolism. Our study reinforced that environmental filtering and bacterial cooccurrence patterns influence the stochastic/deterministic continuum of soil bacterial community assembly and that stochasticity may act through deeper soil layers to influence carbon metabolism. Delineating theoretically the potential linkages between community assembly and SOC dynamics across a broad range of microbial systems represents an interesting topic for future research.

Soil is a complex environment made of multiple microhabitats in which a wide variety of microorganisms co-exist and interact to form dynamic communities. While the abiotic factors that regulate the structure of these communities are now quite well documented, our knowledge of how bacteria interact with each other within these communities is still insufficient. Literature reveals so far contradictory results and is mainly focused on antagonistic interactions. To start filling this gap, we isolated 35 different bacterial isolates from grains of soil assuming that, at this scale, these bacteria would have been likely interacting in their natural habitat. We tested pairwise interactions between all isolates from each grain and scored positive and negative interactions. We compared the effects of simultaneous versus delayed co-inoculations, allowing or not to a strain to modify first its environment. One hundred fifty-seven interactions, either positive or negative, were recorded among the 525 possible one's. Members of the Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas and Streptomyces genera were responsible for most inhibitions, while positive interactions occurred between isolates of the Bacillales order and only in delayed inoculation conditions. Antagonist isolates had broad spectral abilities to acquire nutrients from organic and inorganic matter, while inhibited isolates tended to have little potentials. Despite an overall domination of antagonistic interactions (87%), a third of the isolates were able to stimulate or rescue the growth of other isolates, suggesting that cooperation between bacteria may be underestimated. Biofilms on the surface of food processing equipment act as potential reservoirs of microbial contamination. Bacterial interactions are believed to play key roles in both biofilm formation and antimicrobial tolerance. In this study, Aeromonas hydrophila, Chryseobacterium oncorhynchi, and Pseudomonas libanensis, which were previously isolated from Chinese raw milk samples, were selected to establish two dual-species biofilm models (P. libanensis plus A. hydrophila and P. libanensis plus C. oncorhynchi) on stainless steel at 78C. Subsequently, three disinfectants, hydrogen peroxide (100 ppm), peracetic acid (100 ppm), and sodium hypochlorite (100 ppm), were used to treat the developed sessile communities for 10 min. Structural changes after exposure to disinfectants were analyzed with confocal laser scanning microscopy. The cell numbers of both A. hydrophila and C. oncorhynchi recovered from surfaces increased when grown as dual species biofilms with P. libanensis. Dual-species biofilms were more tolerant of disinfectants than were each single-species biofilm. Peracetic acid was the most effective disinfectant for removing biofilms, followed by hydrogen peroxide and sodium hypochlorite. The results expand the knowledge of mixed-species biofilms formed by psychrotrophic bacteria and will be helpful for developing effective strategies to eliminate bacterial mixed-species biofilms.
