Background: Autistic-like traits (ALT) are prevalent across the general population and might be linked to some facets of a broader autism spectrum disorder (ASD) phenotype. Recent studies suggest an association of these traits with both genetic and brain structural markers in non-autistic individuals, showing similar spatial location of findings observed in ASD and thus suggesting a potential neurobiological continuum. Methods: In this study, we first tested an association of ALTs (assessed with the AQ questionnaire) with cortical complexity, a cortical surface marker of early neurodevelopment, and then the association with disrupted functional connectivity. We analysed structural T1-weighted and resting-state functional MRI scans in 250 psychiatrically healthy individuals without a history of early developmental disorders, in a first step using the CAT12 toolbox for cortical complexity analysis and in a second step we used regional cortical complexity findings to apply the CONN toolbox for seed-based functional connectivity analysis. Results: Our findings show a significant negative correlation of both AQ total and AQ attention switching subscores with left superior temporal sulcus (STS) cortical folding complexity, with the former being significantly correlated with STS to left lateral occipital cortex connectivity, while the latter showed significant positive correlation of STS to left inferior/middle frontal gyrus connectivity (n = 233; all p < 0.05, FWE cluster-level corrected). Additional analyses also revealed a significant correlation of AQ attention to detail subscores with STS to left lateral occipital cortex connectivity. Limitations: Phenotyping might affect association results (e.g. choice of inventories); in addition, our study was limited to subclinical expressions of autistic-like traits. Conclusions: Our findings provide further evidence for biological correlates of ALT even in the absence of clinical ASD, while establishing a link between structural variation of early developmental origin and functional connectivity. This essay examines the representation of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the K-drama Extraordinary Attorney Woo (2022). Through an ideological analysis, we examined the depiction of Woo Young-woo as she navigates her autism, her workplace, and her relationships. Specifically, we address several stereotypes of ASD represented in the series, including savant abilities, dependency on a caretaker, and an inability to successfully navigate interpersonal relationships. By evaluating the depiction of ASD in Extraordinary Attorney Woo, this research aims to contribute to a wider understanding of how media portrays disabled characters. The primary goal of the present research work is to build machine learning based classification model for classifying an individual with different degrees of autism that can yield better performance than traditional autism assessment scale used in India. The study aimed to find how significant are the selected additional 6 attributes for better identification and understanding of Autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This work focuses on a unique screening tool developed for the Indian population –Indian Scale for assessment of Autism(ISAA) to build the classification model. For better performance few additional significant features are also considered following proper procedure. Selective machine learning models are built and finally performance evaluation is done on all classifier results. As an alternative approach, a binary classifier multi-layer perceptron (MLP) model has also been trained on both the data sets to distinguish between people with autism who need less attention and those who need more attention for assessment and further intervention. Overall performance of 3 best classifiers (KNN, Random Forest, SVM) suggests that after considering additional 6 attributes SVM produced better efficacy in identification of degree of autism over conventional ISAA parameters with higher weighted F1 score of 85.7% and accuracy of 90% respectively. It is also reconfirmed with the results of the MLP model. The basic model converges after 71 epochs with training accuracy 97.78% wherein the extended model converges after 61 epochs with training accuracy 98.89%. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition resulting from abnormalities in brain structure and function, which can manifest as communication and social interaction difficulties. Conventional methods for diagnosing ASD may not be effective in the early stages of the disorder. Hence, early diagnosis is crucial to improving the patient's overall health and well-being. One alternative and effective method for early autism diagnosis is facial expression recognition since autistic children typically exhibit distinct facial expressions that can aid in distinguishing them from other children. This paper provides a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN)-based real-time emotion recognition system for autistic kids. The proposed system is designed to identify six facial emotions, including surprise, delight, sadness, fear, joy, and natural, and to assist medical professionals and families in recognizing facial expressions in autistic children for early diagnosis and intervention. In this study, an attention-based YOLOv8 (AutYOLO-ATT) algorithm for facial expression recognition is proposed, which enhances the YOLOv8 model's performance by integrating an attention mechanism. The proposed method (AutYOLO-ATT) outperforms all other classifiers in all metrics, achieving a precision of 93.97%, recall of 97.5%, F1-score of 92.99%, and accuracy of 97.2%. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that presents significant diagnostic challenges due to its varied symptoms and nature. This study aims to improve ASD classification using advanced deep learning techniques applied to neuroimaging data. We developed an automated system leveraging the ABIDE-1 dataset and a novel lightweight quantized one-dimensional (1D) Convolutional Neural Network (Q-CNN) model to analyze fMRI data. Our approach employs the NIAK pipeline with multiple brain atlases and filtering methods. Initially, the Regions of Interest (ROIs) are converted into feature vectors using tangent space embedding to feed into the Q-CNN model. The proposed 1D-CNN is quantized through Quantize Aware Training (QAT). As the quantization method, int8 quantization is utilized, which makes it both robust and lightweight. We propose a federated learning (FL) framework to ensure data privacy, which allows decentralized training across different data centers without compromising local data security. Our findings indicate that the CC200 brain atlas, within the NIAK pipeline's filt-global filtering methods, provides the best results for ASD classification. Notably, the ASD classification outcomes have achieved a significant test accuracy of 98% using the CC200 and filt-global filtering techniques. To the best of our knowledge, this performance surpasses previous studies in the field, highlighting a notable enhancement in ASD detection from fMRI data. Furthermore, the FL-based Q-CNN model demonstrated robust performance and high efficiency on a Raspberry Pi 4, underscoring its potential for real-world applications. We exhibit the efficacy of the Q-CNN model by comparing its inference time, power consumption, and storage requirements with those of the 1D-CNN, quantized CNN, and the proposed int8 Q-CNN models. This research has made several key contributions, including the development of a lightweight int8 Q-CNN model, the application of FL for data privacy, and the evaluation of the proposed model in real-world settings. Non-Word Repetition (NWR) tasks effectively identify language impairments and assess phonological skills across diverse populations and languages, including Arabic. Prior research revealed heterogeneity of performance in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) on NWR tasks. The current study is the first to evaluate phonological skills of Palestinian-Arabic-speaking children with and without ASD, employing a Palestinian-Arabic NWR task. A total of 142 Palestinian-Arabic-speaking children, aged 5–11 participated in the study, including 75 children with Typical Language Development (TLD) and 67 children with ASD. The NWR task included 18 non-words of varying length (1–4 syllables) and complexity (with and without consonant clusters). Quantitative analysis examined the effects of length and phonological complexity on the NWR accuracy scores in children with TLD and ASD. Error pattern analysis accounting for phoneme and syllable substitutions/deletions/additions and lexicalisations aimed to shed light on the phonological representations of children with and without ASD. Within the ASD group, two subgroups emerged: 72% exhibited age-appropriate NWR performance, while 28% showed performance at-risk for phonological impairment. Non-word length, rather than complexity, significantly influenced the children’s performance. Consonant substitution was the most frequent error pattern across all groups. On the theoretical side, these findings extend cross-linguistic evidence of phonological skill heterogeneity in children with ASD to Arabic-speaking children. Additionally, they highlight an overall delayed but qualitatively similar pattern of phonological development in children with ASD. Background: Common genetic variation has been shown to account for a large proportion of ASD heritability. Polygenic scores generated for autism spectrum disorder (ASD-PGS) using the most recent discovery data, however, explain less variance than expected, despite reporting significant associations with ASD and other ASD-related traits. Here, we investigate the extent to which information loss on the target study genome-wide microarray weakens the predictive power of the ASD-PGS. Methods: We studied genotype data from three cohorts of individuals with high familial liability for ASD: The Early Autism Risk Longitudinal Investigation (EARLI), Markers of Autism Risk in Babies-Learning Early Signs (MARBLES), and the Infant Brain Imaging Study (IBIS), and one population-based sample, Study to Explore Early Development Phase I (SEED I). Individuals were genotyped on different microarrays ranging from 1 to 5 million sites. Coverage of the top 88 genome-wide suggestive variants implicated in the discovery was evaluated in all four studies before quality control (QC), after QC, and after imputation. We then created a novel method to assess coverage on the resulting ASD-PGS by correlating a PGS informed by a comprehensive list of variants to a PGS informed with only the available variants. Results: Prior to imputations, None of the four cohorts directly or indirectly covered all 88 variants among the measured genotype data. After imputation, the two cohorts genotyped on 5-million arrays reached full coverage. Analysis of our novel metric showed generally high genome-wide coverage across all four studies, but a greater number of SNPs informing the ASD-PGS did not result in improved coverage according to our metric. Limitations. The studies we analyzed contained modest sample sizes. Our analyses included microarrays with more than 1-million sites, so smaller arrays such as Global Diversity and the PsychArray were not included. Our PGS metric for ASD is only generalizable to samples of European ancestries, though the coverage metric can be computed for traits that have sufficiently large-sized discovery findings in other ancestries. Conclusions: We show that commonly used genotyping microarrays have incomplete coverage for common ASD variants, and imputation cannot always recover lost information. Our novel metric provides an intuitive approach to reporting information loss in PGS and an alternative to reporting the total number of SNPs included in the PGS. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) presents a significant challenge due to its complex genetic basis and associated comorbidities. Among the genes implicated in ASD, SHANK3 has been identified as a critical player, affecting synaptic structure and function. This review examines the role of SHANK3 in ASD, highlighting the genetic diversity and the systemic nature of the disorder. Utilizing animal models, studies have uncovered autism-like behaviours and synaptic dysfunctions linked to SHANK3 deficiency, suggesting potential therapeutic targets. Furthermore, the review delves into the specific gene families associated with ASD, emphasizing the dynamic regulation between translation and transcription processes and the impact of mutations on synaptic translation and proteins. Molecular changes in SHANK3-deficient animal models reveal alterations in protein composition, localization, and transcription, particularly affecting the striatum and involving essential proteins and signalling pathways. Therapeutic strategies, including pharmaceutical compounds and genetic restoration, show promise in addressing the neuropsychiatric symptoms and physiological abnormalities observed in SHANK3-deficient mice. This research not only advances our understanding of ASD's neurobiological basis but also underscores the potential of targeted interventions to mitigate symptoms and improve the quality of life for individuals affected by ASD and related disorders. Introduction: Over the past few decades, there has been growing concern about the concurrent trends of increasing Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) prevalence and declining sperm quality. These trends represent significant public health challenges that warrant thorough investigation of their underlying causes and implications. Objectives: The primary objectives of this study are to analyze trends in ASD prevalence and sperm quality parameters from 2000 to 2024, assess the statistical significance and effect size of these trends, explore potential correlations between ASD prevalence and sperm quality parameters, and identify significant predictors among sperm quality parameters that influence ASD prevalence. Methods: This study employed a longitudinal approach using multiple regression, time series analysis, ANOVA, Principal Component Analysis (PCA), hierarchical clustering, logistic regression, and cross-correlation analysis. Data on ASD prevalence were sourced from the CDC Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, while sperm quality data were collected from various published studies. Results: The findings reveal significant negative associations between ASD prevalence and sperm quality parameters such as sperm concentration and motility, suggesting that better sperm quality is linked to lower ASD rates. Conversely, parameters like sperm DNA fragmentation (SDF), volume of ejaculate, pH level, and semen viscosity show positive associations with ASD prevalence, indicating higher values in these parameters correlate with higher ASD rates. Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of maintaining reproductive health to potentially mitigate ASD risk and calls for further research to elucidate the underlying mechanisms driving these trends. The cerebellum plays a major role in balance, motor control and sensorimotor integration, but also in cognition, language, and emotional regulation. Several neuropsychiatric disorders such as attention deficit-hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as well as neurological diseases such as spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3) are associated with differences in cerebellar function. Morphological abnormalities in different cerebellar subregions produce distinct behavioral symptoms related to the functional disruption of specific cerebro-cerebellar circuits. The specific contribution of the cerebellum to typical development may therefore involve the optimization of the structure and function of cerebro-cerebellar circuits underlying skill acquisition in multiple domains. Here, we review cerebellar structural and functional differences between healthy and patients with ADHD, ASD, and SCA3, and explore how disruption of cerebellar networks affects the neurocognitive functions in these conditions. We discuss how cerebellar computations contribute to performance on cognitive and motor tasks and how cerebellar signals are interfaced with signals from other brain regions during normal and dysfunctional behavior. We conclude that the cerebellum plays a role in many cognitive functions. Still, more clinical studies with the support of neuroimaging are needed to clarify the cerebellum's role in normal and dysfunctional behavior and cognitive functioning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Altered sensory processing is a common feature in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), as recognized in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM‐5). Although altered responses to tactile stimuli are observed in over 60% of individuals with ASD, the neurobiological basis of this phenomenon is poorly understood. ASD has a strong genetic component and genetic mouse models can provide valuable insights into the mechanisms underlying tactile abnormalities in ASD. This review critically addresses recent findings regarding tactile processing deficits found in mouse models of ASD, with a focus on behavioral, anatomical, and functional alterations. Particular attention was given to cellular and circuit‐level functional alterations, both in the peripheral and central nervous systems, with the objective of highlighting possible convergence mechanisms across models. By elucidating the impact of mutations in ASD candidate genes on somatosensory circuits and correlating them with behavioral phenotypes, this review significantly advances our understanding of tactile deficits in ASD. Background: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has seen a rise in prevalence, and the immune system's role in brain development is increasingly recognized. This study investigates the relationship between immune dysregulation and ASD by examining serum concentrations of interleukin 6 (IL-6), interleukin 8 (CXCL8), and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) in children. Methods: Serum samples from 45 children with ASD and 30 controls, aged 2 to 12 years, were analyzed using electrochemiluminescence, chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay, and chemiluminescent immunoassay. ASD symptoms were assessed using the Autism Spectrum Rating Scale (ASRS) and Social Communication Questionnaire (SCQ). Results: No significant correlation was observed between CXCL8 levels and ASD. IL-6 levels showed a trend toward elevation in boys with ASD. TNF-alpha levels were significantly higher in children with ASD under 5 years compared to older children and controls, though no correlation with symptom severity was found. Conclusions: TNF-alpha may be a potential biomarker for early ASD detection, especially in younger children. Altered sensory processing especially in the auditory system is considered a typical observation in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Auditory temporal processing is known to be impaired in ASD children. Although research suggests that auditory temporal processing abnormalities could be responsible for the core aspects of ASD, few studies have examined early time processing and their results have been conflicting. The present event-related potential (ERP) study investigated the early neural responses to duration and inter-stimulus interval (ISI) deviants in nonspeech contexts in children with ASD and a control group of typically developing (TD) children matched in terms of age and IQ. A passive auditory oddball paradigm was employed to elicit the mismatch negativity (MMN) for change detection considering both the duration and ISI-based stimulus. The MMN results showed that the ASD group had a relatively diminished amplitude and significant delayed latency in response to duration deviants. The findings are finally discussed in terms of hyper-hyposensitivity of auditory processing and the fact that the observed patterns may potentially act as risk factors for ASD development within the research domain criteria (RDoC) framework. Autistic individuals are at significantly higher risk of suicide than non-autistic individuals, with transition-aged youth at potentially the highest risk. While lower executive function (EF) skills have been significantly associated with suicide risk in other clinical samples, the link between EF and suicidality has not yet been examined for autistic individuals. In this study, 183 transition-aged autistic youths completed routine suicide risk assessments and self- and informant-reports of autistic traits, depression, and EF skills. On the P4 Suicide Screener, approximately one-third of the sample (33.3%) endorsed having thoughts of hurting themselves with the intent to end their lives (i.e., suicidal ideation) in their lifetime. In addition to depressive symptoms, EF impairment independently predicted endorsement of suicidal ideation, indicating that both are crucial intervention goals to target suicidal risk for transition-aged youth on the spectrum. Findings suggest that executive functioning, a prevalent area of difficulty and common intervention target for the autistic community, is an important indicator of suicide risk in this population. Autistic people are more likely to consider suicide than non-autistic people, with transition-aged youth (ages 16–21 years) at potentially the highest risk. Research has also shown that difficulties with executive functioning (e.g., difficulties with organization, sequencing, and decision-making) may heighten suicide risk among non-autistic people, but it is not clear whether this is also true for autistic people. This study explored this question by asking 183 transition-aged autistic youth about their experience with suicidal behavior and examining the relationship between their responses and additional measures of depression, autistic traits, and executive function skills. About one-third of autistic transition-aged youth (33.3%) said that they had experienced thoughts of hurting themselves with the intent to end their lives (i.e., suicidal ideation). Both depression and executive function challenges predicted suicide risk (i.e., participants who experienced depression were more likely to have had suicidal thoughts than those who had not, and participants who had more difficulty with executive function skills were more likely to have had suicidal thoughts than those who had less difficulty). This article delves into the intricate relationship between oral health, quality of life, and behavioral characteristics in individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Background/Objectives: Autism has been associated with various challenges, and this study seeks to elucidate the impact of ASD on oral health outcomes and overall well-being. The research focuses on assessing overall oral health by evaluating various parameters, such as the condition of lips, tongue, gums and tissues, natural teeth, dentures, oral hygiene, and dental pain in individuals with ASD. Additionally, the study explores the influence of age, sex, and certain variables, like basic daily living skills on oral health practices, aiming to identify potential correlations between these factors and oral health outcomes. Methods: We employed standardized instruments to quantitatively measure and analyze the impact of oral health status on the overall quality of life experienced by individuals with ASD. Results: The study found a statistically significant positive association between oral health, measured by the Oral Health Assessment Tool (OHAT), and quality of life, as indicated by EuroQol 5-Dimensions Youth version (EQ-5D-Y) total scores (β = 0.13045, p = 0.00271). This suggests that better oral health is linked to higher quality of life. When adjusting for age and sex in a multiple linear regression model, the association remained significant but with a slightly reduced effect size (β = 0.10536, p = 0.0167). Age also showed a marginally significant positive association with quality-of-life scores. ANOVA results indicated that participants with advanced oral health status reported significantly higher quality-of-life scores than those with poorer oral health (p = 0.00246). The study also found that intelligence quotient (IQ) does not substantially influence dental health status, while the "Autonomy" subscale of the EQ-5D-Y is positively related to the OHAT. Conclusions: Unhealthy oral conditions significantly impact the overall quality of life in individuals with ASD. An autism‐associated gene Shank3 encodes multiple splicing isoforms, Shank3a‐f. We have recently reported that Shank3a/b‐knockout mice were more susceptible to kainic acid‐induced seizures than wild‐type mice at 4 weeks of age. Little is known, however, about how the N‐terminal and ankyrin repeat domains (NT‐Ank) of Shank3a/b regulate multiple molecular signals in the developing brain. To explore the functional roles of Shank3a/b, we performed a mass spectrometry‐based proteomic search for proteins interacting with GFP‐tagged NT‐Ank. In this study, NT‐Ank was predicted to form a variety of complexes with a total of 348 proteins, in which RNA‐binding (n = 102), spliceosome (n = 22), and ribosome‐associated molecules (n = 9) were significantly enriched. Among them, an X‐linked intellectual disability‐associated protein, Nono, was identified as a NT‐Ank‐binding protein. Coimmunoprecipitation assays validated the interaction of Shank3 with Nono in the mouse brain. In agreement with these data, the thalamus of Shank3a/b‐knockout mice aberrantly expressed splicing isoforms of autism‐associated genes, Nrxn1 and Eif4G1, before and after seizures with kainic acid treatment. These data indicate that Shank3 interacts with multiple RNA‐binding proteins in the postnatal brain, thereby regulating the homeostatic expression of splicing isoforms for autism‐associated genes after birth. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a multifactorial disorder involving genetic and environmental factors leading to pathophysiologic symptoms and comorbidities including neurodevelopmental disorders, anxiety, immune dysregulation, and gastrointestinal (GI) abnormalities. Abnormal intestinal permeability has been reported among ASD patients and it is well established that disturbances in eating patterns may cause gut microbiome imbalance (i.e., dysbiosis). Therefore, studies focusing on the potential relationship between gut microbiota and ASD are emerging. We compared the intestinal bacteriome and mycobiome of a cohort of ASD subjects with their non-ASD siblings. Differences between ASD and non-ASD subjects include a significant decrease at the phylum level in Cyanobacteria (0.015% vs. 0.074%, p < 0.0003), and a significant decrease at the genus level in Bacteroides (28.3% vs. 36.8%, p < 0.03). Species-level analysis showed a significant decrease in Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, Prevotella copri, Bacteroides fragilis, and Akkermansia municiphila. Mycobiome analysis showed an increase in the fungal Ascomycota phylum (98.3% vs. 94%, p < 0.047) and an increase in Candida albicans (27.1% vs. 13.2%, p < 0.055). Multivariate analysis showed that organisms from the genus Delftia were predictive of an increased odds ratio of ASD, whereas decreases at the phylum level in Cyanobacteria and at the genus level in Azospirillum were associated with an increased odds ratio of ASD. We screened 24 probiotic organisms to identify strains that could alter the growth patterns of organisms identified as elevated within ASD subject samples. In a preliminary in vivo preclinical test, we challenged wild-type Balb/c mice with Delftia acidovorans (increased in ASD subjects) by oral gavage and compared changes in behavioral patterns to sham-treated controls. An in vitro biofilm assay was used to determine the ability of potentially beneficial microorganisms to alter the biofilm-forming patterns of Delftia acidovorans, as well as their ability to break down fiber. Downregulation of cyanobacteria (generally beneficial for inflammation and wound healing) combined with an increase in biofilm-forming species such as D. acidovorans suggests that ASD-related GI symptoms may result from decreases in beneficial organisms with a concomitant increase in potential pathogens, and that beneficial probiotics can be identified that counteract these changes. This study had two aims. First, we aimed to investigate the prevalence of ACB, PCB, and oral habits among a group of Albanian children with ASD compared with a group of children without ASD. Second, we aimed to identify the associations of ASD with ACB, PCB, and oral habits. The sample inlcuded 125 children with ASD (91 males, 34 females) from 2 special schools for children with disabilities and 2 daily residential centers in Tirana. The control group included 125 children without ASD. The relationships between categorical variables were evaluated via the chi-square test. To identify the potential risk factors for ASD, we performed binary logistic regression. No statistically significant differences were found for CB or oral habits between the primary and adolescent dentition stages. A comparison of children with ASD with CB and oral habits revealed a significant difference in the prevalence of PCB. Binary logistic regression revealed that ACB, PCB and oral habits were not associated with ASD. CB was more prevalent among children with ASD in the primary and mixed dentition stages. Accumulating evidence proves that children with autism have gastrointestinal problems. However, a significant difference in gut microbiota (GM) exists between autistic and non-autistic children. These changes in the GM may stem from several factors. Recently, researchers focused on nutritional factors, especially vitamin deficiency. Thus, our systematic review investigates the connections among autism, GM alterations, and vitamin A deficiency (VAD), by analyzing studies sourced from PubMed and Embase databases spanning from 2010 to 2022. Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, we meticulously selected 19 pertinent studies that established links between autism and GM changes or between autism and VAD. Our findings uniformly point to significant alterations in the GM of individuals with autism, indicating these changes as promising biomarkers for the disorder. Despite the consistent association of GM alterations with autism, our analysis revealed no notable differences in GM composition between individuals with autism and those experiencing VAD. This suggests that VAD, especially when encountered early in life, might play a role in the onset of autism. Furthermore, our review underscores a distinct correlation between reduced levels of retinoic acid in children with autism, a disparity that could relate to the severity of autism symptoms. The implications of our findings are twofold: they not only reinforce the significance of GM alterations as potential diagnostic markers but also spotlight the critical need for further research into nutritional interventions. The current world has witnessed the emergence of various illnesses, such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), that are not yet medically recognized. It impacts multiple behavioral domains, such as repetitive and stereotyped behavior, social competence, and linguistic skills. This condition is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder. It Identifying and classifying ASD is challenging and time-consuming due to its symptoms being remarkably similar to those of many other mental illnesses. Machine learning-based models are increasingly being used to predict a wide range of human diseases, leveraging various physiological and other characteristics. Our study aims to develop a classification model that can predict the likelihood of ASD in various age groups, such as toddlers, children, adolescents, and adults. We have utilized several machine learning (ML) algorithms, including support vector machine (SVM), Naive Bayes (NB), random forest (RF), extra trees classifier (ET), k-nearest neighbor (K-NN), decision tree (DT), Ada boost classifier (AB), and stochastic gradient descent (SGD) classifiers. These models are tested using four unique non-clinical ASD screening datasets that are publicly available from Kaggle and the UCI library. In the first dataset, there are 1054 instances and 19 features related to toddlers. The remaining ones consist of 21 traits and, for children, adolescents, and adults, 292, 104, and 704 cases, respectively. The aim of this study is to identify autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit–hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) traits in adolescents who experience psychotic-like experiences (PLEs), often ignored in clinical practice but widely prevalent in the general population. A total of 57 adolescents and young adults (aged between 16 and 24 years old) were recruited consecutively in the outpatient services. A total of 37 were females (64.9%), 18 were males (31.6%), and two participants (3.5%) were non-binary or gender non-conforming, with a mean age at referral of 18.26 ± 2.06. To investigate these symptoms, three sets of standardized questionnaires were used, as follows: the Autism Spectrum Quotient–short form (AQ-10), the Community Assessment of Psychic Experiences (CAPE-42), and the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS). We found significant associations between the ASRS and AQ-10 total scores and all CAPE scales. The model which explained the highest variance was CAPE Score's Total Frequency score (p < 0.001). Our findings underline the importance of investigating the presence of subthreshold ASD and ADHD symptoms in clinical populations, particularly in the period of adolescence and young adulthood, to promptly identify the presence of PLEs and, thus, prevent the onset of a frank psychotic disorder, particularly in the presence of a comorbid psychopathological condition, leading to better diagnosis and treatment for individuals with two or more of these conditions. This study aimed to investigate the gap between adaptive functioning and cognitive functioning, especially verbal and nonverbal intelligence quotient (IQ) in Chinese children with ASD. We systematically explored cognitive functioning, ASD severity, early signs of developmental abnormalities, and socioeconomic factors as mediating factors of adaptive functioning. We enrolled 151 children (age: 2.5?6 years) with ASD and categorized them into one group with IQ ≥ 70 and another with IQ < 70. The two groups were calibrated for age, age at diagnosis, and IQ, and the relationship of adaptive skills with vocabulary acquisition index (VAI) and nonverbal index (NVI) were separately analyzed. Results show that the gap between IQ and adaptive functioning was significant in children with ASD having IQ ≥ 70, with both VAI and NVI showing statistically significant differences (all P < 0.001). VAI correlated positively with scores for overall adaptive skills and specific domains, whereas NVI had no significant correlations with adaptive skill scores. Age of first walking unaided had an independent positive correlation (all P < 0.05) with scores of adaptive skills and specific domains. IQ-adaptive functioning gap is significant in children with ASD having IQ ≥ 70, suggesting that defining "high-functioning autism" merely on the basis of IQ is not appropriate. The Caregiver Strain Questionnaire assesses the three dimensions of caregiver strain, namely the objective, subjective externalized and subjective internalized strain. It was validated among caregivers of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in the United States and Mainland China with promising psychometric properties. This study aimed to develop and validate the Chinese (traditional script) version of the Caregiver Strain Questionnaire (C-CGSQ) among 198 caregivers of children with ASD in Hong Kong. The C-CGSQ showed excellent internal consistency (α = 0.958) and test-retest reliability (Spearman's r = 0.966). Concurrent, convergent, divergent validity and a three-factor structure (consistent with previous studies) were established. Provided the significant overlap in features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), there is a critical need to identify transdiagnostic markers that could meaningfully stratify subgroups. The objective of this study was to compare the visual evoked potential (VEP) between 30 autistic children, 17 autistic children with co-occurring ADHD presentation (ASD + ADHD), and 21 neurotypical children (NTC). Electroencephalography was recorded while children passively viewed a pattern-reversal stimulus. Mean amplitude of the P1 event-related potential was extracted from a midline occipital channel and compared between groups. P1 mean amplitude was reduced in the ASD + ADHD group compared to the ASD and NTC groups, indicating a distinct pattern of brain activity in autistic children with co-occurring ADHD features. Communication and interaction in neurotypical environments can be challenging for autistic individuals, potentially disrupting the parent-child relationship. In Relationship Development Intervention (RDI) that facilitates improved interactions between autistic children and their parents, RDI Consultants play key roles in enabling parents to develop skills that support the parent-child relationship. Parents follow the guidance of the Consultants to build their capacities to model reciprocal communications with their autistic children. Given the significant role played by the Consultant, their perspectives should be explored. Two research questions were explored: 1) What are the lived experiences of RDI Consultants in delivering RDI to autistic children and their families? 2) What are RDI Consultants' perspectives regarding the outcomes of engaging in RDI for autistic children and their families? Eleven RDI Consultants participated in semi-structured interviews to explore their experiences in using RDI. Interviews were conducted via Zoom. All interviews were transcribed verbatim and thematically analysed. Three main themes were produced: 1) RDI helps autistic children reach their potential; 2) Parents learn to embrace parenthood through RDI; and 3) Consultants form a team with parents. Overall, RDI was perceived to be beneficial in improving autistic children's social engagement, such as parent-child interactions, as well as enhancing parenting experiences. The results add to and extend the existing evidence of RDI, which may provide families of autistic children and those professionals who are working with these families more therapeutic choices to consider. Accumulating evidence suggests that individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) show impairments in using contextual priors to predict others' actions and make intention inference. Yet less is known about whether and how children with ASD acquire contextual priors during action observation and how contextual priors relate to their action prediction and intention inference. To form proper contextual priors, individuals need to observe the social scenes in a reliable manner and focus on socially relevant information. By employing a data‐driven scan path method and areas of interest (AOI)‐based analysis, the current study investigated how contextual priors would relate to action prediction and intention understanding in 4‐to‐9‐year‐old children with ASD (N = 56) and typically developing (TD) children (N = 50) during free viewing of dynamic social scenes with different intentions. Results showed that children with ASD exhibited higher intra‐subject variability when scanning social scenes and reduced attention to socially relevant areas. Moreover, children with high‐level action prediction and intention understanding showed lower intra‐subject variability and increased attention to socially relevant areas. These findings suggest that altered fixation patterns might restrain children with ASD from acquiring proper contextual priors, which has cascading downstream effects on their action prediction and intention understanding. Lay Summary: Skilled social interactions require individuals to infer others' intentions and predict others' actions based on prior experiences, which is impaired in children with ASD. The present study investigated whether and how children with ASD acquire prior knowledge and how their prior knowledge would influence action prediction and intention understanding during viewing dynamic social scenes. We found that children with ASD viewed social scenes in an unpredictable way and showed decreased attention to socially relevant areas as compared with typically developing children. Moreover, children with high‐level action prediction and intention understanding observed the social scenes in a more predictable way and exhibited increased attention to socially relevant areas. Abstract Background Autistic-like traits (ALT) are prevalent across the general population and might be linked to some facets of a broader autism spectrum disorder (ASD) phenotype. Recent studies suggest an association of these traits with both genetic and brain structural markers in non-autistic individuals, showing similar spatial location of findings observed in ASD and thus suggesting a potential neurobiological continuum. Methods In this study, we first tested an association of ALTs (assessed with the AQ questionnaire) with cortical complexity, a cortical surface marker of early neurodevelopment, and then the association with disrupted functional connectivity. We analysed structural T1-weighted and resting-state functional MRI scans in 250 psychiatrically healthy individuals without a history of early developmental disorders, in a first step using the CAT12 toolbox for cortical complexity analysis and in a second step we used regional cortical complexity findings to apply the CONN toolbox for seed-based functional connectivity analysis. Objective Autism is one of the most common neurodevelopmental disorders. It causes problems in social cognition, communication, and understanding of self and others’ feelings, and has a negative effect on the quality of a person’s life. The present study determines the effectiveness of the Cogniplus cognitive training program on the social cognition (theory of mind (ToM) of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Materials & Methods In a semi-experimental study with a pre-test, post-test design, and a control group with a two-month follow-up, 65 children (44 male and 21 female) from 6 to 11 years old with ASD were selected based on the convenience sampling method from individuals referred to one of autism rehabilitation centers in Shahr-e-Ray City, Iran. They were assessed by the autism spectrum screening questionnaire (ASSQ). Overall, 50 children (33 male and 17 female) with a score of 19 and above on the autism spectrum screening questionnaire were diagnosed with high-functioning autism. They entered into the study according to the inclusion criteria as follows: having speech ability, the absence of motor or intellectual disability, and visual and hearing impairments. Meanwhile, they were matched based on their age. They were randomly and equally assigned to two experimental and control groups. The parents completed the ToM test. The experimental group participated individually in 20 sessions (twice a week, 30 min per session), in the Cogniplus cognitive training program, but the control group only received mainstream services (occupational therapy, speech therapy, art therapy, and music therapy). The parents completed the ToM test in the last session and two months follow-up. The data were analyzed by the correlation analysis, analysis of regression, and generalized estimating equations in the SPSS software, version 27. Results The results of generalized estimating equations analysis showed that the Cogniplus cognitive training program improved social cognition (total, first level, and second level of ToM). Meanwhile, the β coefficient showed that 2.9, 3.08, and 0.96 of the variations, respectively, in the ToM levels as the first, the second, and the total, in children with ASD who received Cogniplus cognitive training program. Also, the variations lasted after a two-month follow-up. Conclusion Considering the positive effect of the Cogniplus cognitive training program on social cognition, the use of the Cogniplus cognitive training program can solve the need for therapists who have new cognitive insight into training. Also, the implementation of such programs can help to improve the social cognition of children with autism disorder with high functioning in real-life situations.

Abstract Background Common genetic variation has been shown to account for a large proportion of ASD heritability. Polygenic scores generated for autism spectrum disorder (ASD-PGS) using the most recent discovery data, however, explain less variance than expected, despite reporting significant associations with ASD and other ASD-related traits. Here, we investigate the extent to which information loss on the target study genome-wide microarray weakens the predictive power of the ASD-PGS. Methods We studied genotype data from three cohorts of individuals with high familial liability for ASD: The Early Autism Risk Longitudinal Investigation (EARLI), Markers of Autism Risk in Babies-Learning Early Signs (MARBLES), and the Infant Brain Imaging Study (IBIS), and one population-based sample, Study to Explore Early Development Phase I (SEED I). Individuals were genotyped on different microarrays ranging from 1 to 5 million sites. Coverage of the top 88 genome-wide suggestive variants implicated in the discovery was evaluated in all four studies before quality control (QC), after QC, and after imputation. We then created a novel method to assess coverage on the resulting ASD-PGS by correlating a PGS informed by a comprehensive list of variants to a PGS informed with only the available variants. Results Prior to imputations, None of the four cohorts directly or indirectly covered all 88 variants among the measured genotype data. After imputation, the two cohorts genotyped on 5-million arrays reached full coverage. Analysis of our novel metric showed generally high genome-wide coverage across all four studies, but a greater number of SNPs informing the ASD-PGS did not result in improved coverage according to our metric. Limitations. The studies we analyzed contained modest sample sizes. Our analyses included microarrays with more than 1-million sites, so smaller arrays such as Global Diversity and the PsychArray were not included. Our PGS metric for ASD is only generalizable to samples of European ancestries, though the coverage metric can be computed for traits that have sufficiently large-sized discovery findings in other ancestries. Conclusions We show that commonly used genotyping microarrays have incomplete coverage for common ASD variants, and imputation cannot always recover lost information. Our novel metric provides an intuitive approach to reporting information loss in PGS and an alternative to reporting the total number of SNPs included in the PGS. While applied only to ASD here, this metric can easily be used with other traits.

Abstract Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) presents a significant challenge due to its complex genetic basis and associated comorbidities. Among the genes implicated in ASD, SHANK3 has been identified as a critical player, affecting synaptic structure and function. This review examines the role of SHANK3 in ASD, highlighting the genetic diversity and the systemic nature of the disorder. Utilizing animal models, studies have uncovered autism-like behaviours and synaptic dysfunctions linked to SHANK3 deficiency, suggesting potential therapeutic targets. Furthermore, the review delves into the specific gene families associated with ASD, emphasizing the dynamic regulation between translation and transcription processes and the impact of mutations on synaptic translation and proteins. Molecular changes in SHANK3-deficient animal models reveal alterations in protein composition, localization, and transcription, particularly affecting the striatum and involving essential proteins and signalling pathways. Therapeutic strategies, including pharmaceutical compounds and genetic restoration, show promise in addressing the neuropsychiatric symptoms and physiological abnormalities observed in SHANK3-deficient mice. This research not only advances our understanding of ASD's neurobiological basis but also underscores the potential of targeted interventions to mitigate symptoms and improve the quality of life for individuals affected by ASD and related disorders.

Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death for children under 14 with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The purpose of this mixed methods study was to determine the feasibility of aquatic occupational therapy to increase swim skills for children with ASD following 10 weeks of intervention. Eight children, ages three to seven years old, participated in aquatic group-based occupational therapy to increase their swim skills. The Water Orientation Test Alyn-2 (WOTA2) and Goal Attainment Scaling were utilized to assess the change in participant swimmers' skills. Qualitative data were gathered through individual parent interviews. All participants increased in total score on the WOTA2 and 81% of all individualized goals were met or exceeded. Themes derived from parent interviews included benefits of participation, acquired skills, and value of the occupational therapy approach. The results of this study supported the value and feasibility of aquatic occupational therapy to increase swim skills in children with ASD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has a complex genetic architecture involving contributions from both de novo and inherited variation. Few studies have been designed to address the role of rare inherited variation or its interaction with common polygenic risk in ASD. Here, we performed whole-genome sequencing of the largest cohort of multiplex families to date, consisting of 4,551 individuals in 1,004 families having two or more autistic children. Using this study design, we identify seven previously unrecognized ASD risk genes supported by a majority of rare inherited variants, finding support for a total of 74 genes in our cohort and a total of 152 genes after combined analysis with other studies. Autistic children from multiplex families demonstrate an increased burden of rare inherited protein-truncating variants in known ASD risk genes. We also find that ASD polygenic score (PGS) is overtransmitted from nonautistic parents to autistic children who also harbor rare inherited variants, consistent with combinatorial effects in the offspring, which may explain the reduced penetrance of these rare variants in parents. We also observe that in addition to social dysfunction, language delay is associated with ASD PGS overtransmission. These results are consistent with an additive complex genetic risk architecture of ASD involving rare and common variation and further suggest that language delay is a core biological feature of ASD.

Abstract Background Researches have found that alteration of intestinal flora may be closely related to the development of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, whether probiotics supplementation has a protective effect on ASD remains controversial. This meta-analysis aimed to analyze the outcome of probiotics in the treatment of ASD children. Methods The Pubmed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science and Embase were searched until Sep 2022. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) relevant to the probiotics and placebo treatment on ASD children were screened. Quality assessment of the included RCTs was evaluated by the Cochrane collaboration’s tool. The primary outcomes were ASD assessment scales, including ABC (aberrant behavior checklist) and CBCL (child behavior checklist) for evaluating the behavior improvement, SRS (social responsiveness scale) for social assessment, DQ (developmental quotient) for physical and mental development and CGI-I (clinical global impression improvement) for overall improvement. Abstract Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are a group of neurodevelopmental disorders that affect individuals' social interactions, communication skills, and behavioral patterns, with significant individual differences and complex etiology. This article reviews the definition and characteristics of ASD, epidemiological profile, early research and diagnostic history, etiological studies, advances in diagnostic methods, therapeutic approaches and intervention strategies, social and educational integration, and future research directions. The highly heritable nature of ASD, the role of environmental factors, genetic–environmental interactions, and the need for individualized, integrated, and technology-driven treatment strategies are emphasized. Also discussed is the interaction of social policy with ASD research and the outlook for future research and treatment, including the promise of precision medicine and emerging biotechnology applications. The paper points out that despite the remarkable progress that has been made, there are still many challenges to the comprehensive understanding and effective treatment of ASD, and interdisciplinary and cross-cultural research and global collaboration are needed to further deepen the understanding of ASD and improve the quality of life of patients.

Abstract Background Sleep disturbances are frequently reported in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and are associated with the severity of co-occurring symptoms. This study’s aim was to examine the extent of healthcare utilization and clinical outcomes associated with sleep disturbances in children with ASD. Study design A retrospective, cross-sectional study of 541 children with ASD from the Azrieli National Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment Research (ANCAN) whose parents completed the Children’s Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ). Children with a total CSHQ score ≥ 48 were defined as having sleep disturbances. Sociodemographic characteristics, ASD diagnostic measures, chronic co-occurring conditions, medication usage, hospitalizations, visits to the emergency room (ER), and visits to specialists were compared in ASD children with and without sleep disturbances. Multivariate logistic regression models were then used to assess the independent association of sleep disturbances with clinical characteristics and healthcare utilization. Results Of the 541 children with ASD, 257 (47.5%) had sleep disturbances. Children with sleep disturbances exhibited higher rates of multiple (≥ 3) co-occurring conditions (19.1% vs. 12.7%; p = 0.0414) and prescribed medications (45.5% vs. 32.7%; p = 0.0031) than other children. Finally, ASD children with sleep disturbances were 1.72 and 2.71 times more likely to visit the ER and be hospitalized than their counterparts (aOR = 1.72; 99%CI = 1.01–2.95; and aOR = 2.71; 99%CI = 1.10–6.67, respectively). Conclusions Our findings suggest that sleep disturbances are associated with greater healthcare utilization among children with ASD. Further studies could examine whether treating sleep disturbances in children with ASD yields additional clinical benefits beyond improvements in sleep.

Research on autistic children who grow up in multilingual environments remains sparse, despite more than half of the global population being multilingual. Autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) is characterized by severe impairments in communication and language skills. Many ASD parents ask specialists for advice about whether their child should study both languages simultaneously in a bilingual environment. The study investigated the challenges faced by teachers and parents in educating children with ASD in learning English as a Second language (ESL). The study sample consisted of nine parents and five teachers of children with ASD who were interviewed using a qualitative approach. According to the findings of the study, teaching English as a Second Language to children with autism spectrum disorders with visual aids, modeling, and repetition has been shown to be an effective method to enhance the language and social abilities of children with autism. While it is difficult to develop teaching strategies that are effective for children with autism spectrum disorders, teachers have found that these children are extremely proficient in acquiring new languages. Additionally, to ensure successful language learning programs for children with ASD, it is essential that educators and parents collaborate in order to make the programs successful. Moreover, this study demonstrates various methods that educators and parents could use in order to assist children in achieving bilingualism. The study recommends that more research is needed to fully comprehend the difficulties that ESL teachers face when they are trying to teach children with ASD how to learn languages.

Abstract Background Most children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) have co-occurring language impairments and some of these autism-specific language difficulties are also present in their non-autistic first-degree relatives. One of the possible neural mechanisms associated with variability in language functioning is alterations in cortical gamma-band oscillations, hypothesized to be related to neural excitation and inhibition balance. Methods We used a high-density 128-channel electroencephalography (EEG) to register brain response to speech stimuli in a large sex-balanced sample of participants: 125 youth with ASD, 121 typically developing (TD) youth, and 40 unaffected siblings (US) of youth with ASD. Language skills were assessed with Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals. Results First, during speech processing, we identified significantly elevated gamma power in ASD participants compared to TD controls. Second, across all youth, higher gamma power was associated with lower language skills. Finally, the US group demonstrated an intermediate profile in both language and gamma power, with nonverbal IQ mediating the relationship between gamma power and language skills. Limitations We only focused on one of the possible neural contributors to variability in language functioning. Also, the US group consisted of a smaller number of participants in comparison to the ASD or TD groups. Finally, due to the timing issue in EEG system we have provided only non-phase-locked analysis. Conclusions Autistic youth showed elevated gamma power, suggesting higher excitation in the brain in response to speech stimuli and elevated gamma power was related to lower language skills. The US group showed an intermediate pattern of gamma activity, suggesting that the broader autism phenotype extends to neural profiles.

Normal brain development, function, and aging critically depend on unique characteristics of the cerebrovascular system. Growing evidence indicated that cerebrovascular defects can have irreversible effects on the brain, and these defects have been implicated in various neurological disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD is a neurodevelopmental disorder with heterogeneous clinical manifestations and anatomical changes. While extensive research has focused on the neural abnormalities underlying ASD, the role of brain vasculature in this disorder remains poorly understood. Indeed, the significance of cerebrovascular contributions to ASD has been consistently underestimated. In this work, we discuss the neurovascular crosstalk during embryonic development and highlight recent findings on cerebrovascular alterations in individuals with ASD. We also discuss the potential of vascular-based therapy for ASD. Collectively, these investigations demonstrate that ASD can be considered a neurovascular disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Teaching foreign languages, such as English, as an international language, to children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) has been considered by the researchers of language instruction, language learning, and teachers of children with special needs. The population of children diagnosed with autism is rapidly growing and they must have similar opportunities for enhancing life skills, education, successful interactions, and universal communicative skills. Materials and Methods: This study reviews and discusses the findings of past studies that investigated effective ways and efficient methods for teaching these children English as a foreign language. Results: Although there has been restricted literature throughout the world, the reviewed studies demonstrated improvement of English language learning by suitable strategies and various methods, including pictures representing, humanoid robots, Montessori-oriented methods, applied behavior analysis (ABA), cognitive method, the picture exchange communication system (PECS), well-designed educational environments, mixed methods and strategies, speech therapy, media, total physical response (TPR), and individualized education plan (IEP). Conclusion: This narrative review encourages various interventions and integrated methods for teaching the English language to autistic children, considering their differences from diverse aspects. Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is primarily characterized by core deficits in social skills, communication, and cognition and by repetitive stereotyped behaviors. These manifestations are variable between individuals, and ASD pathogenesis is complex, with over a thousand implicated genes, many epigenetic factors, and multiple environmental influences. The mesolimbic dopamine (DA) mediated brain reward system is held to play a key role, but the rapidly expanding literature reveals intricate, nuanced signaling involving a wide array of mesolimbic loci, neurotransmitters and receptor subtypes, and neuronal variants. How altered DA signaling may constitute a downstream convergence of the manifold causal origins of ASD is not well understood. A clear working framework of ASD pathogenesis may help delineate common stages and potential diagnostic and interventional opportunities. Hence, we summarize the known natural history of ASD in the context of emerging data and perspectives to update ASD reward signaling. Then, against this backdrop, we proffer a provisional framework that organizes ASD pathogenesis into successive levels, including (1) genetic and epigenetic changes, (2) disrupted mesolimbic reward signaling pathways, (3) dysregulated neurotransmitter/DA signaling, and finally, (4) altered neurocognitive and social behavior and possible antagonist/agonist based ASD interventions. This subdivision of ASD into a logical progression of potentially addressable parts may help facilitate the rational formulation of diagnostics and targeted treatments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Autistic students are a growing subgroup within post-secondary schooling; however, little is known about barriers to their success in that context. Research suggests autistic students face more challenges to completing post-secondary education than neurotypical students, but findings often rely on expert opinion and fail to incorporate first-hand perspectives. To address this gap, a qualitative inquiry into barriers to success for autistic post-secondary students was conducted. Thematic Analysis yielded 10 themes in three categories, while two separate cross-cutting themes emerged; themes interact with one another, intensifying concerns of autistic students. Findings can support post-secondary institutions to reflect on the extent to which these barriers are present for their autistic students and modify support services accordingly. In general, individuals with autism spectrum disorder have poor outcomes in adulthood on almost any measure assessed. Poor outcomes, in part, may be related to inadequate planning leading up to adulthood, including inappropriate goal setting, ineffective communication, and inadequate involvement of all decision‐makers needed to inform planning. The skills in the repertoires of individuals on the spectrum have been shown in the research to directly impact the trajectory of outcomes. Yet, at present there is next to no peer‐reviewed literature that identifies evidence‐based procedures to teach practitioners how to write meaningful goals that will positively impact these outcomes. The present study therefore examined the effects of a treatment package aimed at improving the quality of goals written by clinicians and students of applied behavior analysis. Overall, this study showed that for at least some participants, the independent variable improved the quality of skill acquisition goals, as measured by expert and advanced practitioner ratings as well as self‐assessed ratings. Both experiments yielded statistically significant increases in both dependent variables for the experimental group, when compared to the control group. These promising initial findings have implications for practitioners who hope to adequately plan for the future of those they serve by targeting those skills that will positively affect outcomes. Although there is a growing body of evidence showing the potential of animal-assisted (AAT) therapy use with various populations, there is still a limited amount of such studies in Lithuania. This article continues the construction of the scientific discourse of animal-assisted therapy in Lithuania. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the efficiency of animal-assisted therapy for children with autism spectrum disorders. The study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of animal-assisted therapy not only from the therapist’s viewpoint but also from the parents’ perspective. Specific objectives included: 1) to evaluate parents’ perception of their children’s performance and satisfaction level in the areas selected by parents of self-care, productivity and leisure before and after animal-assisted therapy sessions; 2) to measure the effectiveness of animal-assisted therapy sessions in language/ communication, sociability, sensory/cognitive awareness, and health/behaviour perceived by the parents; 3) to evaluate and compare parents’ perceived behavioural-emotional difficulties before and after animal-assisted therapy sessions; and 4) to monitor and compare behavioural changes in children during and after animal-assisted therapy sessions .The sample consisted of nine children with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. The results from two measurement methods provide support for the efficacy of animal-assisted therapy. The average scores of performance and satisfaction in targeted problem areas are higher in both groups of participants after animal-assisted therapy sessions as indicated by the parents. The parents of all participants indicated lower scores in speech/language, sociability, sensory/cognitive awareness and healthy/physical behaviour, which indicate fewer problems in these areas. Parents evaluate children’s aggressive behaviour and externalising problems as significantly lower after animal-assisted therapy sessions. The scores of emotional problem scales are slightly higher after therapy, but the difference is not statistically significant. Parents tend to notice changes in behavioural problems more than emotional. The behavioural changes monitored by therapists varied in each session. The monitoring of behavioural changes in each session cannot indicate stable qualitative growth or decline as the results are sensitive to the inner states of children. Change of behaviour scores in each session showed that animal-assisted therapy sessions were beneficial to older as well as to younger participants. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present article explores the connection between insomnia and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), focusing on the efficacy and safety of melatonin treatments as supported by existing research and current guidelines. In this narrative review a group of Italian experts provide an analysis of the various aspects of managing insomnia in children with ASD, highlighting key points that could enhance the quality of life for both patients and their caregivers. This includes the significance of comprehensively understanding the root causes of a child's sleep difficulties for more effective, long-term management. Insomnia, a condition frequently documented in neurodevelopmental disorders such as ASD, greatly affects the lives of patients and caregivers. Recent data show that melatonin-based formulations are effective and safe for treating ASD-related insomnia both short and long term. In particular, prolonged-release melatonin is poised to be the optimal choice for this patient population. This formulation is approved for the treatment of insomnia in children and adolescents aged 2–18 years suffering from ASD and/or Smith-Magenis syndrome, where sleep hygiene measures and behavioral treatments have not been sufficient. In support, emerging research in pediatric settings indicates long-term efficacy and safety, although further research efforts are still needed. Current guidelines recommend managing insomnia and sleep disturbances in ASD using a combination of behavioral and pharmacological methods, primarily melatonin. Recent concerns about accidental melatonin ingestion highlight the need for high purity standards, such as pharmaceutical-grade prolonged-release formulations. The article also summarizes emerging molecular mechanisms from preclinical research, suggesting future therapeutic approaches. • Current guidelines recommend behavioral and pharmacological methods for ASD insomnia. • Prolonged release melatonin is a primary choice for treating ASD-related insomnia. • Long-term efficacy and safety data of melatonin in ASD insomnia are promising. • Ensuring high purity standards in melatonin products is essential for safety. As the prevalence of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) increases, there is a growing need to develop physical activity interventions that address the behavioral challenges experienced by individuals with ASD. Physical education teachers have employed behavioral supports that add more structure and adapt the environment for individuals with ASD, which are associated with increased engagement for individuals with ASD during PE. The purpose of this study was to quantify motor engaged behaviors (i.e. motor appropriate (MA)), motor inappropriate (MI), motor supported (MS) during skill practice in 18 individuals with ASD (ages 7-19 years) participating in an adapted tennis program (ACEing Autism) using the Academic Learning Time in Physical Education (ALT-PE) instrument. Overall, the supports provided during the program may have enabled participants with ASD to spend more time in MA and MS than MI.
