Tässä diplomityössä tarkasteltiin aurinkovoimalan ja tuulivoimalan tuotantoprofiileihin vaikuttavia tekijöitä ja niiden yhdenmukaisuuksia. Perehtymällä kuukausien ja vuorokausien rytmeihin, sääilmiöihin ja niiden vaikutuksiin hajautetulle sääriippuvaiselle energian tuotannolle, annettiin perusteet tuotantokapasiteettien päällekkäiselle mitoittamiselle. Työssä on perehdytty teoreettisesti tuuli- ja aurinkosähköpuistojen erilaisiin tekniikoihin ja sääriippuvuuksiin. Aurinkosähkön rooli energian tuotannossa on kasvanut Suomessa viimeisen viiden vuoden aikana merkittävästi. Vaikka kokonaisuudessa aurinkosähkön tuotanto on edelleen marginaalista, on aurinkosähkö kuitenkin nopeinten kasvava energiantuotantomuoto. Tästä huolimatta teollisen kokoluokan hajautettuja aurinkovoimalaitoksia on Suomessa vain muutamia ja voimalahankkeet kohdistuvat enimmäkseen kuntien, yksityishenkilöiden ja yritysten kulutusliittymäpisteiden yhteyteen. Tämä johtuu aurinkovoimaloiden kustannustehottomuudesta teollisessa kokoluokassa verrattuna useiden megawattien tuulivoimaloihin. Aurinkovoimala voidaan kuitenkin toteuttaa kustannustehokkaasti osaksi tuulivoimalaa, samalla nostaen liittymäpisteen käyttöastetta ja tasoittaen energian tuotantoa vuorokausien ja vuodenaikojen välillä. Diplomityön avulla perusteltiin aurinko- ja tuulihybridivoimalan potentiaali ja annettiin käytössä olevien tuotantotietojen perusteella suuntaa antava ohjeistus auringon ja tuulen yhteiskäytön mitoittamiselle saman liittymäpisteen takana. Samalla käytiin läpi edellytyksiä tuotantomuotojen yhteen sovittamiselle. This Master’s thesis orientates in the production curves of solar and wind power. By familiarizing ourselves with the rhythms of months and days, weather phenomena and their effects on distributed weather-dependent energy production, the basis for overlapping production capacities was given. The thesis theoretically familiarized a reader with the various technologies and weather dependencies of wind and solar power parks. The role of solar electricity in energy production has grown significantly in Finland over the past five years. Even though overall solar electricity production is still marginal, solar electricity is nevertheless the fastest growing form of energy production. Despite this, there are only a few large distributed solar power plants in Finland, and the power plant projects are mostly aimed at the connection points of energy consumers. This is due to the cost inefficiency of solar power plants in the industrial scale compared to wind power plants of several megawatts. However, a solar power plant can be implemented cost-effectively as part of a wind power plant, at the same time increasing the utilization rate of the connection point and flatten out the energy production between days and seasons. With the help of this master’s thesis, the potential of the solar and wind hybrid power plant was substantiated and based on the available production data, guidelines were given for scaling the combined use of solar and wind behind the same connection point. At the same time, the qualifications for matching the production forms were reviewed.

This study is about multicriteria decision aiding (MCDA) for the green airports program of the Moroccan Airport Authority ONDA. The goal of the program is to develop significant amounts of renewable power at airports. In particular, ONDA wants to select airports at which large solar and wind power parks should be built. Multiple criteria, including economy, technical feasibility, and environmental concerns, must be considered simultaneously. In this study, we apply Stochastic Multicriteria Acceptability Analysis (SMAA) for ranking the candidates to be developed into green airports. The analysis is conducted in phases with different sets of criteria. This study is the first application of MCDA for developing large-scale renewable energy production at airports. As a theoretical novelty, the pairwise winning indices of SMAA are used to form stochastic partial and complete rankings of the alternatives. Based on the results, two alternatives obtain the best and second-best rank in every model, and one alternative is always last, while the ranks of the remaining alternatives vary depending on the set of criteria.

Self-sustaining off-grid energy systems may require both short-term and seasonal energy storage for year-around operation, especially in northern climates where the intermittency in both solar irradiation and energy consumption throughout the year is extreme. This paper examines the technical feasibility of an off-grid energy system with short-term battery storage and seasonal hydrogen storage, comprising a water electrolyzer and a fuel cell. The study is based on data from a currently grid-connected residential single-family house in Finland with an existing 21 kWp photovoltaic (PV) installation and a ground source heat pump based heating system. Energy system performance is simulated using real PV power generation data as well as data on grid electricity import and export from the house over a three-year period to find the minimum combination of battery and hydrogen storage system capacities capable of year-round off-grid operation. It is concluded that technically feasible solutions are available for the proposed setup. The most significant factor affecting the system dimensioning is found to be high peak electric power demand during times of low PV power generation, indicating a need for smart power control. Demand for battery storage capacity is found to be significant only to about 20 kWh. Fuel cell and electrolyzer nominal powers of at least 4 kW and 5 kW to 7 kW, respectively, were found to be sufficient for off-grid operation with the studied system. The storage capacity demand for 170 kg to 190 kg of hydrogen annually is, however, impractically large for residential houses. Post-print / Final draft

Yleistyvän pientuotannon odotetaan tuovan ongelmia jännitetasossa ja nopeissa jännitteen muutoksissa. Elenialle tehdyissä diplomitöissä on käytännössä päästy toteamaan ongelman syntyminen, mutta korjaavia toimenpiteitä ei ole esitetty. Työn tarkoituksena oli päivittää tarkastelutapaa tuotannon liittämisessä ja päivittää sähköverkon mitoitusohjetta niiden osalta. Työssä oli tarkoitus esitellä erilaisia korjaustoimenpiteitä jännitteen laadun korjaamiseksi ja valita niistä sopivat verkkoyhtiön käyttöön. Työn alussa kerrottiin, minkä takia pientuotanto on yleistymässä, ja minkälaisia vaikutuksia tuotantolaitteistoilla on jännitteen laatuun. Alkuun esiteltiin myös nykyinen prosessi tuotannon liittämistarkasteluissa, ja minkä takia tähän malliin olisi hyvä saada muutoksia. Jännitteen laadun korjaustoimenpiteitä löydettiin useita, jotka jaettiin pehmeisiin ja koviin keinoihin. Pehmeät keinot eivät vaadi suurta alkuinvestointia, ja ne ovat usein aktiivisia säätömenetelmiä. Tulevaisuuden sähköverkossa tulee olla joustoa sääriippuvan tuotannon yleistyessä, jota saadaan pehmeiden keinojen myötä. Kovat toimenpiteet ovat perinteisiä investointeja, joilla tehdään verkosta vahvempaa parantamalla sähköisiä arvoja. Tutkimusosuudessa tarkasteltiin tyypillisiä ongelmia aiheuttavia verkkokohteita ja niihin pyrittiin löytämään kustannustehokkaat ratkaisut teknistaloudellisen analyysin myötä. Kohteiksi valikoitui pienjänniteverkon laskentadatan perusteella heikon verkon liittymä, yksittäinen suuri tuotantoyksikkö ja ylikuormitettu muuntopiiri. Tarkasteluiden myötä saatiin päivitettyä nykyistä mallia tuotannon liittämistarkasteluissa ja kehitysehdotuksia nopeiden jännitteenmuutosten tarkasteluihin. Näiden uudistusten myötä tuotannon liittämistä tarkastellaan kokonaisvaltaisemmin ja investointeja saadaan vähennettyä. Uuden laskentamallin soveltuvuutta tulee tarkastella vielä jatkotutkimuksissa. Tulevaisuudessa verkosta tullaan saamaan paremmin dataa uusien sähkömittareiden myötä ja ymmärrys tuotannon verkkovaikutuksista paranee

The development of solar cells with higher efficiencies is paramount when future global energy demands are to be met with renewable energy sources. The largest efficiency has been achieved with a multijunction solar cell manufactured from group III-V semiconductors. In order to improve the cells efficiency parasitic power losses manifesting in the cell should be reduced. This can be done by reducing the series resistance of the front metal contact. The aim for this thesis was to fabricate solar cells with smaller series resistances by changing the conductive metal in the front contact from gold to a silver-based structure. Silver has higher conductivity when compared to gold and it is also cheaper with a downside of being less chemically stable. This material change was studied in three different experiments which measured the properties of the fabricated silver such as conductivity, chemical stability and overall functionality in the process. In addition to the tests for the material properties multiple CPV solar cells with silver contacts were fabricated and their performance was compared to identical solar cells with gold contacts. The material tests proved that the silver-based structure is workable in the fabrication process and its conductivity was higher than gold. The performance of the fabricated silver cells was satisfactory, and it was identical to the gold cells when their performance was measured with a solar simulator in concentrations of 1, 100, 250, 500, 750 and 900 suns. However, when subjected to a high-power laser performance test it was observed that the silver cells had more resistive losses than the gold ones. The reason for performance decrease was estimated to be related to chemical degradation of silver during the manufacturing process as the structure was not completely protected. However, future developments for the silver contacts seem quite promising and with some adjustments to the fabrication process the contact structure could be protected from degradation. This could be done by utilizing alternative etchants which won’t react with the silver structure or utilizing a metallization process that covers the silver contact from its’ sides where it is most vulnerable for process chemicals. In conclusion, this thesis answered all the research questions provided sufficiently and it could function as a base for further silver contact development in III-V solar cells.

Solar and wind power are expected to play a central role in future carbon-neutral electricity generation systems based on renewable sources. However, integrating intermittent and weather-dependent production into electricity markets that are designed for well-predictable variations in demand and supply is not straightforward. This dissertation addresses three specific economic problems regarding how current electricity generation systems can cost-efficiently absorb more solar and wind power. In the first study, a residential solar panel and battery adoption model is estimated using data from Germany in 2000–2018. Drawing from adverse selection literature in contract theory, different subsidy policy combinations are examined to determine whether they would lead to any savings in governmental subsidy costs. The main finding is that combining a feed-in tariff with an investment subsidy for batteries is cost-efficient. The second study addresses the co-existence of fluctuating renewable power and nuclear power plants, which are not particularly flexible in adjusting their output power. The study examines whether the nuclear power plants’ inflexibility hinders the large uptake of solar and wind power in Germany or whether the plants’ low marginal cost of generating electricity outweighs the costs stemming from their inflexibility. The findings indicate that the inflexibility is mainly reflected in increasing balancing costs, but the solar and wind power capacity can still grow notably in the country without significant increases in these costs. The third study examines whether the recently introduced capacity market in Ireland provides an additional lever for the dominant firm in the electricity market to exercise market power. Using ex-ante simulations, the study shows that the largest firm, by taking advantage of its dominant position, can increase costs in the capacity market notably when compared to the least-cost solution. The main forms of abuse of market power would be capacity withholding to drive up the capacity payments and predatory pricing with the aim of forcing rivals to exit the market. Tiivistelmä Aurinko- ja tuulivoiman odotetaan olevan keskeisessä roolissa tulevaisuuden hiilineutraalissa uusiutuviin energialähteisiin perustuvassa sähköntuotannossa. Sääriippuvan tuotannon lisääminen sähkömarkkinoille, jotka on suunniteltu olosuhteisiin, joissa kysynnän ja tarjonnan vaihtelu on hyvin ennustettavaa, ei ole kuitenkaan ongelmatonta. Tässä väitöskirjassa tarkastellaan kolmea taloustieteellistä ongelmaa, jotka liittyvät siihen, miten nykyiseen sähköntuotantojärjestelmään saataisiin kustannustehokkaasti lisää aurinko- ja tuulivoimaa. Ensimmäisessä osatutkimuksessa estimoidaan kysyntämalli kotitalouksien aurinkopaneelijärjestelmille ja niihin liitetyille akuille käyttäen havaintoaineistoa Saksasta vuosilta 2000–2018. Soveltamalla sopimusteoriaan kuuluvaa kirjallisuutta haitallisesta valikoitumisesta tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan, voitaisiinko erilaisia tukipolitiikkamuotoja yhdistämällä säästää tuen kustannuksissa. Tutkimuksen päätulos on, että syöttötariffin yhdistäminen akkujen investointitukeen on erityisen kustannustehokasta. Toisessa osatutkimuksessa tarkastellaan, miten sään mukaan vaihteleva sähköntuotanto sopii yhteen tuotantotehon säätökyvyltään suhteellisen joustamattomien ydinvoimaloiden kanssa. Osatutkimuksen pääkysymys on, vaikeuttaisiko ydinvoimaloiden joustamattomuus aurinko- ja tuulivoiman laajaa käyttöönottoa Saksassa, vai ylittäisivätkö ydinvoiman matalien rajatuotantokustannusten hyödyt sen joustamattomuudesta aiheutuvat haitat. Osoittautuu, että joustamattomuus ilmenee markkinoilla pääasiassa kohonneina säätökustannuksina, mutta aurinko- ja tuulivoimatuotanto voisi kasvaa Saksassa vielä huomattavasti, ennen kuin näistä kustannuksista tulisi merkittäviä. Kolmannessa osatutkimuksessa tutkitaan, tarjoaako vastikään Irlannissa käyttöönotettu kapasiteettimarkkina sähkömarkkinoilla määräävässä asemassa olevalle yritykselle lisämahdollisuuden käyttää markkinavoimaa. Simulaatiot osoittavat, että markkinoiden suurin yritys voisi asemaansa hyväksikäyttäen nostaa kapasiteettimarkkinan kustannuksia merkittävästi. Keskeisimmät tavat väärinkäyttää määräävää markkina-asemaa olisivat kapasiteetin tarjoamatta jättäminen kapasiteettimaksujen nostamiseksi ja saalistushinnoittelu, jonka tarkoituksena on saada kilpailijoita poistumaan markkinoilta.

We study the economic profitability of residential solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in Finland. We show a moderate rate of returns (1.0% in Northern and 1.4% in Southern Finland) for the PV system investments with time-of-use hot water heating. Optimized hot water heating increases the rate of return by 0.6 percentage points. We internalize the negative externalities of greenhouse gas emissions from electricity generation by presenting the hourly electricity prices as a function of emission permit costs. A 10 €/tCO 2 increase in carbon price improves the PV investment rate of return by 0.3 percentage points.

Ilmaston lämpeneminen, sekä halu sen hidastamiseksi ajaa nyky-yhteiskuntaa vuosi vuodelta kohti puhtaampaa energiantuotantoa. Käytännössä tämä on tapahtunut laki- ja veroteknisin toteutuksin, jotka kohdistuvat fossiiliseen tuotantoon, kallistaen näin tuotettua energiaa. Tästä syntyvän kustannuspaineen sekä uusien trendien myötä yhä useampi sektori on alkanut kiinnostua puhtaan uusiutuvan energian tuotannosta. Tämän diplomityön tarkoituksena oli tarkastella omavaraisen energiantuotannon kannattavuutta vanhassa teollisuusrakennuksessa, niin rahallisen säästön kuin ekologisuuden kautta. Omavaraiseksi tuotannoksi työssä on katsottu ne tuotantomuodot, joiden avulla niin sähkö- kuin lämmitysenergiaa voidaan tuottaa ilman riippuvuutta ulkopuolisesta tahosta. Näiden ajatusten pohjalta sähköntuotannollinen tarkastelu on toteutettu aurinko- sekä pientuulivoimalle ja lämmöntuotannossa lämpöpumpuille sekä puulämmitykselle. Sähköntuotannossa aurinko- sekä pientuulivoimalle laskettiin tuottoennusteet erilaisilla vuosienergiatuotannoilla, joiden pohjalta pystyttiin lopulta arvioimaan investointien taloudellista kannattavuutta. Laskelmien pohjalta aurinkovoimalan hankintaa kohteeseen voitiin pitää perusteltuna investointina niin rahallisesta kuin ekologisesta näkökulmasta katsottuna. Pientuulivoiman osalta hankintaa ei kuitenkaan voitu pitää kannattavana vaihtoehtona ennen tarkempia tuulimittauksia. Tuulimittausten suorittamista voidaan kuitenkin pitää perusteltuna, mahdollisen talvella saatavan energiahyödyn kautta. Tarkasteltaviksi päälämmitysjärjestelmiksi valittiin puukeskuskattila, maalämpö sekä ilma-vesilämpöpumppu, joiden kannattavuutta tarkasteltiin investointikustannusten sekä energiantuotannosta aiheutuvien vuotuisten kustannusten avulla. Käytännöllisyyden sekä ekologisuuden kannalta tarkasteltuna järkevimpänä yhteisinvestoin-tina esimerkkikohteeseen voitiin pitää aurinkovoimaa yhdistettynä maalämpöön. Vaikka vuosi-kustannusten kannalta puukeskuslämmitys on lämmitysjärjestelmistä halvin, tuottaa se muihin lämmitysratkaisuihin nähden enemmän työtä sekä ilmansaasteita. Global warming and the desire to slow it down are driving modern society from year to year towards cleaner energy production. In practice, this has been done with laws and taxation that are focused to energy production with fossil fuel, by making production more expensive. With the resulting cost pressures and new trends, more and more sectors are interested in clean renewable energy production. The purpose of this master’s thesis was based on to study the profitability of self-sufficient energy production in an old industrial building using both economic savings and ecology. Forms of production that can be used to produce both electricity and heat without dependence on an external party have been considered as self-sufficient production. Based on these ideas, electricity production for solar and wind power as well as heat production with heat pumps and wood heat have been considered. In electricity generation, production forecasts for solar and wind power were calculated using different annual energy productions that could eventually be used to assess the economic profitability of the investment. Based on the calculations, on the acquisition of a solar power plant on-site could be considered a justified investment from both an economic and ecological point of view. The acquisition of wind power could not be considered a profitable option until more accurate wind measurements were made. However, wind measurements can be considered justified due to the potential energy benefits available in winter. Based on investment costs and the annual costs of energy production profitability comparison of the main heating systems were done to wood-fired central heating boilers, ground source heat pumps and air-to-water heat pumps. From the point of view of practicality and ecology, solar energy combined with ground source heat pumps could be considered the most sensible joint investment in the example building. Although wood-fired central heating boiler is the cheapest in the annual cost of a heating system, but it causes more labor and air pollution than other heating solutions.

Tämän työn päätavoitteena on tutkia aurinkovoimalan hyödyntämistä sähköautojen latausverkoston energianlähteenä. Työssä tehdään nykytila-analyysi aurinkosähköjärjestelmien, eri akkuteknologioiden ja sähköautojen latauspisteiden osalta. Käsiteltäviä aiheita aurinkokennojen osalta ovat niiden toimintaperiaate, kaupallisesti saatavilla olevat ratkaisut, tulevaisuuden teknologiat ja aurinkovoimalan tuottavuuteen vaikuttavat tekijät. Akkujärjestelmien osalta tarkastellaan aurinkovoimaloiden yhteydessä yleisimmin käytettyjä akkuteknologioita ja niiden ominaisuuksia. Lisäksi tutustutaan sähköautojen latauksessa käytettäviin eri lataustapoihin ja -laitteisiin, niiden käyttökohteisiin sekä kuormanhallinnan toteuttamiseen. Nykytila-analyysin lisäksi tehdään tapaustutkimus, jossa valittuun esimerkkikohteeseen määritetään käytettävä sähköautojen latausjärjestelmä. Määritetyn latausverkoston ja mitatun sähköenergian kulutustiedon avulla luodaan kohteelle kulutusprofiili. Aurinkovoimala mitoitetaan hyödyntäen luotua kulutusprofiilia ja saatavilla olevaa auringonsäteilyn mittausdataa. Aurinkovoimalan nimellistehoa hyödyntäen määritetään myös tarkastelussa käytettävien akustojen energiakapasiteetti. Määritetyn järjestelmän tietojen pohjalta tehdään esimerkkikohteen mukaiselle järjestelmälle kustannusanalyysi. Kannattavuuslaskelmat tehdään hyödyntäen sisäisen korkokannan ja takaisinmaksuajan menetelmiä. Näiden avulla järjestelmälle määritetään kustannusoptimi, jonka mukaisesti järjestelmä on kannattavin toteuttaa. Lisäksi verrataan tavallisen aurinkosähköjärjestelmän kannattavuutta akkuvarmennettuun järjestelmään. Saatujen tulosten perusteella määritetään kannattavin järjestelmäkonfiguraatio ja aurinkovoimalan nimellisteho. Aurinkovoimalalle laskettiin optimaalinen nimellisteho jokaiselle kuukaudelle hyödyntämällä saatavilla olevaa sähköenergian kulutustietoa ja mittausdataa kohteen auringonsäteilyn määrästä. Kolmen eri tehoisen aurinkovoimalan kuukausittaista ja vuotuista tuotantoa verrattiin kohteen kulutukseen. Myös voimalan nimellistehon ja latauspisteiden kulutusprofiilin vaikutusta ylituotannon määrään tarkasteltiin. Tuloksista havaittiin, että nimellistehon muutoksella on merkittävä vaikutus ylituotannon määrään. Paras tuotanto voimalalla saadaan touko-heinäkuussa, ja noin 80 % koko vuoden tuotannosta ajoittuu huhtikuun ja syyskuun väliselle ajalle. Voimalan optimaalisen nimellistehon löytämiseksi käytettiin apuna kannattavuuslaskentaa. Kannattavuuslaskennassa hyödynnettiin takaisinmaksuajan ja sisäisen korkokannan menetelmiä järjestelmien kannattavuuden määrittämiseksi. Sisäinen korkokanta ja takaisinmaksuaika laskettiin nimellisteholtaan 120-300 kWp:n voimaloille tavalliselle verkkoon kytketylle ja akkuvarmennetulle järjestelmälle. Laskennan tuloksista todettiin, että järjestelmä on taloudellisesti kannattavinta toteuttaa ilman akustoa 190 kWp:n nimellisteholla niin, että latauspisteiden kulutus ohjataan seuraamaan aurinkovoimalan tuotantoa. Tuloksista havaittiin, että akuston lisääminen järjestelmään laskee sisäistä korkokantaa akuston koosta riippumatta. Näin ollen todettiin, että akusto on yksikköhinnaltaan liian kallis tuottaakseen riittävän taloudellisen hyödyn verkkoon myydyn sähkön vähentämisessä.

Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin aurinkosähköjärjestelmien tuomia etuja asuinkerrostalojen elinkaarikustannuksiin ja energiatehokkuuteen. Tutkimuksen päätavoitteena oli selvittää, että voidaanko aurinkosähköä hyödyntää asuinkerrostaloissa niin, että se olisi taloudellisesti kannattavaa. Aurinkosähköjärjestelmien taloudelliseen kannattavuuteen vaikuttavat useat tekijät, joiden vaikutusta investoinnin kannattavuuteen tutkimuksessa pyrittiin arvioimaan. Lisäksi tutkimuksessa selvitettiin aurinkosähköjärjestelmän mitoitukseen vaikuttavia asioita. Tutkimus jakautuu kahteen osaan: teoriaosuuteen ja referenssikohteiden arviointiosuuteen. Teoriaosuus perustuu kirjallisuustutkimukseen, jonka lähteinä on käytetty kotimaisia ja kansainvälisiä kirjoja, artikkeleita ja internetsivuja. Referenssikohteiden arviointiosuus perustuu todellisiin kohteisiin, joiden aurinkosähköjärjestelmille tehdään kannattavuuslaskelmat. Lähteinä kannattavuuslaskelmiin on käytetty kohteiden todellisia suunnitelmia, energiatodistuksia ja projekteissa mukana olleiden asiantuntijoiden arvioita. Tutkimuksessa havaittiin, että aurinkosähköjärjestelmien kannattavuuteen vaikuttaa sähkön hintakehitys, oman käytön osuus tuotetusta aurinkosähköstä, vuotuinen paneelien pinnalle kohdistuva kokonaissäteilyenergian määrä, aurinkosähköjärjestelmän koko, aurinkosähköjärjestelmän hankintakustannukset ja valittu korkokanta. Tutkimuksen perusteella aurinkosähköjärjestelmä voi olla taloudellisesti kannattava investointi, kun suurin osa tuotetusta aurinkosähköstä voidaan hyödyntää itse kiinteistössä. Aurinkosähköjärjestelmien suunnittelussa on tärkeää varmistaa, että aurinkopaneelien pinnalle kohdistuva kokonaissäteilyenergian määrä on riittävän suuri, jotta aurinkosähköä voitaisiin tuottaa niin paljon, että tuotetun sähkön arvolla voidaan kattaa aurinkosähköjärjestelmän investointikustannukset. Aurinkopaneelien pinnalle kohdistuvaan kokonaissäteilyenergian määrään vaikuttaa varjostukset, maantieteellinen sijainti, kallistuskulma ja suuntaus. Tutkimuksessa tutkittiin myös aurinkosähköjärjestelmien vaikutusta asuinkerrostalojen energiatehokkuuteen. Tutkimuksen laskelmien perusteella aurinkosähköjärjestelmien avulla on mahdollista pienentää rakennuksen E-lukua, ja myös rakennuksen hiilijalanjälkeä, mutta vaikutus ei ole kovin suuri. Rakennuksen energiatehokkuuden parantuminen aurinkosähköjärjestelmällä perustuu siihen, että tuotetulla aurinkosähköllä vähennetään ostoenergian tarvetta. Aurinkosähköjärjestelmällä tuotettu sähköenergia on myös täysin päästötöntä. Usein aurinkosähköjärjestelmät mitoitetaan niin, että lähtökohtaisesti rakennuksen energiatehokkuus paranee, jolloin investoinnin taloudellinen kannattavuus ei ole ensisijainen tavoite. Rakennuksen energiatehokkuuden parantuminen aurinkosähköjärjestelmän avulla voi nostaa myös koko rakennuksen arvoa, joten aurinkosähköjärjestelmillä voidaan saada aikaan myös välillisiä taloudellisia hyötyjä. Tutkimuksen laskelmien perusteella voidaan sanoa, että aurinkosähköllä on mahdollista alentaa rakennuksen elinkaarikustannuksia ja parantaa rakennuksen energiatehokkuutta. Suuremmat järjestelmät vaikuttaisivat olevan taloudellisesti kannattavampia. Tämä johtuu lähinnä siitä, että suurten järjestelmien suhteelliset hankintakustannukset (€/W_p) ovat huomattavasti alhaisemmat kuin pienissä aurinkosähköjärjestelmissä. Suurten järjestelmien riskinä on se, että verkkoon joudutaan syöttämään osa tuotetusta sähköenergiasta, joka taas heikentää järjestelmän taloudellista kannattavuutta. Suomessa aurinkosähköjärjestelmien suosion kasvun odotetaan jatkuvan myös tulevina vuosina. Erityisesti akkuteknologian kehittyminen voi tehdä aurinkosähköjärjestelmistä entistäkin kannattavampia investointeja. Akkujen käytön vaikutusta verkkoon kytketyn aurinkosähköjärjestelmän kannattavuuteen olisikin mahdollisesti hyvä tutkia tulevaisuudessa tarkemmin.

Kotitalouden aurinkosähköjärjestelmän yhteydessä toimiva sähkökemiallinen energiavarasto on tehokas keino kohteen energiankulutuksen ja -tuotannon eriaikaisuuksien tasapainotta-miseksi. Tässä diplomityössä tarkastellaan aurinkosähkön ja sähkökemiallisen energiavaraston yhteistoimintaa, sekä esitetään perusteet aurinkosähköakuston toiminnan optimoimiseksi. Työn tavoitteena on selvittää aurinkosähköakuston toimintaperiaatteet ja suomalaisilla markkinoilla olevat teknologiavaihtoehdot, sekä esittää järjestelmäkokonaisuuden optimaaliset mitoitusperi-aatteet loppukäyttäjän motiiveihin perustuen. Diplomityön alkuosion kirjallisuustutkimuksessa perehdytään sähkökemiallisen energiavaras-ton toimintaperiaatteeseen ja vertaillaan eri teknologiavaihtoehtojen tärkeimpiä ominaisuuksia. Työssä keskitytään erityisesti laajalti käytössä olevien eri litiumakkuteknologioiden ominaisuuk-sien vertailuun. Kirjallisuustutkimusosa käsittelee myös aurinkosähköakuston eri komponenttien tehtäviä ja toimintaperiaatteita, sekä energiavaraston asettamia vaatimuksia rajapinnassaan toimiville kokonaisuuksille, kuten aurinkopaneeleille, sähköverkolle ja kulutusprofiileille. Työn kir-jallisuusosion tarkoituksena on kuvata sähkökemiallisen energiavaraston toimintaa osana koh-teen aurinkosähköjärjestelmää suomalaisissa olosuhteissa. Diplomityön tutkimusosion tarkoituksena on selvittää aurinkosähköakuston loppukäyttäjälleen luomat aineelliset ja aineettomat hyödyt, sekä antaa perusteet optimaalisen energiavarastova-linnan määrittämiseksi. Aurinkosähköakuston käyttäjälleen tuomat hyödyt muodostuvat omava-raisuuden kasvattamisesta ja uusiutuvan energian käytön lisäämisestä, sekä energiavaraston käytön muodostamista taloudellisista hyödyistä. Omavaraisuuden kasvattaminen perustuu au-rinkosähköakuston keskeiseen toimintaperiaatteeseen, jossa aurinkosähköjärjestelmän tuotta-ma ylituotanto varastoidaan kohteen energiavarastoon verkkoon myymisen sijasta, ja varastoitu energia käytetään kohteen energiankulutuksen kattamiseksi myöhempänä ajankohtana. Tähän perustuvat myös aurinkosähköakuston luomat taloudelliset hyödyt, jotka syntyvät myydyn yli-tuotannon ja ostosähkön erotuksesta. Järjestelmäkoon optimaalinen mitoittaminen perustuu kohteessa muodostuvan ylituotannon ja kohteen energiakulutuksen suhteeseen loppukäyttäjän motiivit huomioiden. Diplomityön tutkimusosiossa tarkastellaan myös aurinkosähköjärjestelmän yhteydessä toimivan sähkökemiallisen energiavaraston toimintaa kahden konkreettisen esi-merkkikohteen avulla. Kerätyn mittausdatan perusteella aurinkosähköakuston toimintaa voidaan tarkastella vuorokausi-, kuukausi- ja vuositasolla. The cooperation between a household solar power system and an electrochemical energy storage is an efficient way to balance the differences between the supply and demand of the household energy system. In the master’s thesis the said cooperation is inspected together with the basic principle of an electrochemical energy storage system. The goal of this thesis is to examine the operation of an electrochemical energy storage, present the current technology variations in the Finnish market and to propose a way to optimize the electrochemical energy storage system to meet the end users’ criteria. In the literature review part of the thesis the basic principle of an electrochemical energy storage system is presented together with a comparison between different energy storage technologies. The main focus of the thesis is on Li-ion batteries and their main properties be-tween the most common li-ion technologies. The literature review part of the thesis also covers the main energy storage components and their basic operation principles, and the limitations the energy storage system sets for solar panels, energy grid and the customer energy profile. The goal of the literature review is to describe the cooperation between solar power system and electrochemical energy storage in Finnish circumstances. The goal of the research part of the master’s thesis is to find out the different benefits the electrochemical energy storage system offers for the end user, and to present the basic princi-ple for techno-economic optimization of a solar energy storage. The benefits for the end user are formed by the increased self-use of the locally produced energy, the increased share of re-newable energy usage and the economic benefits from using the energy storage. The increase in the self-use of the energy is explained by the main operation principle of a solar energy stor-age, where instead of selling the surplus solar energy, the energy is stored inside the energy storage element and used later on locally. The economic benefit follows the same phenomena, where the benefit is the price difference between the sold surplus energy and the energy pur-chased from the grid. The techno-economic optimization of a solar energy storage is based on the relationship between the surplus solar energy and the energy demand of the targeted loca-tion, taking in the account the end users’ criteria. The research section of the master’s thesis also includes an example case of two different solar power systems with a solar energy storage included. From the measurement data of the two example cases, the basic principle of the co-operation between a solar power system and an electrochemical energy storage can be exam-ined. The examination is executed in a timespan of a day, a month and a year.

Highlights • Combines dynamic optimization and numerical weather prediction (NWP). • Annual solar PV forecast error cost for the 1 MWp plant is 830€. • Solar PV generation imbalances reduced by 10% with demand side management. • Average and marginal benefits per household decrease with increasing network size. Intermittent renewable energy generation, which is determined by weather conditions, is increasing in power markets. The efficient integration of these energy sources calls for flexible participants in smart power grids. It has been acknowledged that a large, underutilized, flexible resource lies on the consumer side of electricity generation. Despite the recently increasing interest in demand flexibility, there is a gap in the literature concerning the incentives for consumers to offer their flexible energy to power markets. In this paper, we examine a virtual power plant concept, which simultaneously optimizes the response of controllable electric hot water heaters to solar power forecast error imbalances. Uncertainty is included in the optimization in terms of solar power day-ahead forecast errors and balancing power market conditions. We show that including solar power imbalance minimization in the target function changes the optimal hot water heating profile such that more electricity is used during the daytime. The virtual power plant operation decreases solar power imbalances by 5–10% and benefits the participating households by 4.0–7.5 € in extra savings annually. The results of this study indicate that with the number of participating households, while total profits increase, marginal revenues decrease.

Ilmastonmuutoksen takia on kehitetty vaihtoehtoisia tapoja sähköntuotannolle. Fossiilisten polttoaineiden käyttöä vähennetään niiden ympäristövaikutuksien takia ja näin ollen uusiutuvat energiantuotantomuodot ovat koko ajan yleistymässä niiden hinnan alentuessa. Yksi yleistyvä energiantuotantomuoto on tällä hetkellä aurinkosähkö. Aurinkosähköjärjestelmät yleistyvät pienjänniteverkon sähköliittymillä koko ajan asiakkaiden pyrkiessä omavaraisuuteen. Tässä diplomityössä tutkitaan PowerWorld -simulointiohjelmaa hyväksi käyttäen sähköliittymille hankittujen aurinkosähköjärjestelmien vaikutusta sähköverkkoon ja sähköverkon suunnitteluun. Aurinkosähköjärjestelmien tuotettu teho on täysin sääriippuvainen ja tämä voi muodostua pienjänniteverkossa ongelmaksi. Aurinkosähköjärjestelmät nostattavat jännitteitä pienjänniteverkon solmupisteissä ja standardissa SFS-EN 50160 on määritelty, että nopea jännitevaihtelu saa olla enimmillään 5 %. Tämä 5 %:n arvo pitää ottaa huomioon sähköverkon suunnittelussa. Tämän diplomityön tavoitteena on tutkia sähköverkon suunnittelun näkökulmasta Sähköenergialiitto ry:n ohjeistamaa laskentakaavaa sallitulle tuotantotehon kytkemiselle. Laskentakaavan periaatteena on, että sähköliittymän oikosulkuvirta pitää olla riittävä, jotta kytkettävä aurinkosähköjärjestelmä ei aiheuta yli 5 % jännitteen muutosta sähköliittymän solmupisteellä. Samalla tutkittiin aurinkosähköjärjestelmien yhteisvaikutusta pienjänniteverkossa pahimman skenaarion mukaan eli tuotannon ollessa maksimissa ja kuormitus minimissä. Diplomityön tuloksena saatiin selville useamman kytketyn aurinkosähköjärjestelmän olevan riski sähkön laadulle. Jännite nousee simuloidun pienjänniteverkon solmupisteissä yli + 10 %:n nimellisjännitteeseen, vaikka oikosulkuvirtaa on sähköliittymillä tarpeeksi. Sähköenergialiitto ry:n laskentakaavaa ei tulisi näin ollen käyttää sellaisenaan, jos samassa muuntopiirissä on useampia aurinkosähköjärjestelmiä. Sähköenergialiitto ry:n laskentakaava mitoittaa sähköverkon liian jännitejäykäksi, jos tarkastellaan yhden liittymän kytkettyä aurinkosähköjärjestelmää.

This paper depicts how cultural resonance for novel technologies is constructed as a gradual, interactive process. We adopt a cultural framing perspective and strive to understand how actors assign meaning to the novel technology and determine its appropriateness for the local context. Existing research has largely focused on the strategic and political aspects of field framing processes through depicting conscious framing struggles between protagonist and antagonist actors. In addition to such strategic framing activities, we examine how other socio-cultural factors, such as changes in actor positions, interaction between framing activities, and the cultural “repertoire” of frames interact in producing cultural resonance. For our empirical case study, we followed the emerging technological field of solar energy during an intensive period of change. Our study contributes to the growing number of studies that draw attention to the creation of cultural resonance as an interactive multi-actor process by offering in-depth understanding of the multifaceted interactions that constitute the meaning-making process for an emerging field.

Smart energy transition includes a widespread deployment of clean energy technologies and intelligent energy management with information and communication technologies (ICTs). In this paper, the smart energy transition is studied from the viewpoint of the technology convergence of renewable energy sources (RESs) and ICTs. Two important, fast-growing and weather-dependent renewable energy generation technologies: wind power and solar PV (photovoltaic) are studied. This paper provides technology convergence analyses of RES and ICT inventions based on international patent data. Digitalisation is changing the whole of society, and according to the results, this transition can also be seen in the studied renewable energy generation technologies. The digitalisation of RES production covers technologies that control, manage and optimise electricity production in different intelligent ways. Differences between wind power and solar PV technologies are found: in the case of wind power, the development from virtually no ICT solutions to partial technology convergence with the ICT sector is straightforward. However, in the case of solar PV, the development of basic technologies has been even faster than the development of the solar PV ICT solutions, which may indicate the immature nature of solar PV technologies during the studied years. The digitalisation of the renewable energy sector poses challenges for RES companies in following and predicting ICT development and opportunities for innovations and collaborations with ICT companies. This conclusion can also be expanded to society and policy levels because focusing on only a narrow field when planning innovation policy instruments can negatively impact the country's competitiveness.

Renewable energies are foreseen as a major energy resource for next generations. Among several energy sources and technologies available, Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technology has a great potential, but it needs to be optimised, in particular to reduce the costs, with an increase of the operating temperature and long term stability. This goal can be achieved by tailoring the composition and multilayer structure of films. In this work we present and discuss the results obtained from solar absorber coatings based on nitride/oxynitride structures. A four-layer film structure, W/CrAlSiNx(HA)/CrAlSiNxOy(LA)/SiAlOx, was deposited on stainless steel substrates using magnetron sputtering deposition method. Simulations were performed to establish the best spectral properties of the multilayer stacks with optical constants of single layers and film thickness. The elemental analysis was performed using Rutherford Backscattering Spectrometry (RBS) and Time of flight Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis (TOF-ERDA). To assess the thermal stability of the coatings the samples were thermal annealed at 400°C, in air, and at 600°C, in vacuum. The results obtained by RBS and TOF-ERDA reveal good oxidation resistance and thermal stability. Tähän raporttiin on koottu VTT:n toimesta tehdyt ja VTT:n ohjaamat tutkimukset ja niiden keskeiset tulokset. Nämä kohdentuivat pääasiassa kahteen alueeseen. Polttokokeiden avullatutkittiin hakkeen kosteuden vaikutusta 500 kW arinakattilan savukaasupäästöihin ja hyötysuhteeseen. VTT:n aurinkokuivausjärjestelmän avulla tutkittiin aurinkoenergian hyödyntämistä hakkeen kuivauksessa. Polttokokeet osoittivat, että kattilan oikeat säädöt, tasainen polttoaineen syöttö ja ohjauslogiikka ovat avainasemassa hyvän polttotuloksen saavuttamisessa. Tutkitulla kattilalla osateholla ajettaessa hakkeen kosteus lisäsi merkittävästi häkä- ja hiukkaspäästöjä hakkeen kosteuden ylitettyä 45 p-%. Denmark, Germany, and Finland are countries that have emerged as technology leaders in key renewable energy fields—wind energy, solar power, and bioenergy. In this article, we dig into the policy trajectories of these countries and concentrate particularly on a phenomenon that is common for them all—the long-term commitment to promoting particular renewable energy (RE) technologies. Analyzing commitment, its causes and its consequences, can be considered important, as earlier findings show that long-term, consistent policy signals are a key for policy success. In this article, we point out that this ‘sticking’ to a RE technology has emerged and manifested in multiple ways in the case countries. Examples include relying on existing cultural capacities when navigating energy policy direction, strategically promoting scaling of technology markets to root new energy practices in society and developing energy policies as an extension of existing socio-technical structures. In order to understand these dynamics in more depth, we utilize literature on policy robustness and resilience. While all the case countries, Denmark, Germany, and Finland, have generated robust RE policy goals, Finland has failed to foster resilience simultaneously. We conclude that analysing stickiness of policy elements can be fruitful when seeking to understand and design transformative policies. Further, it can be taken as a complementary analytical perspective in the policy mix studies.

This thesis presents measuring techniques as well as measured and simulated results with the aim of helping the design of photovoltaic energy harvesting systems. Therefore, cost-effective measurement setups were developed for collecting the amount of irradiation, for both stationary and moving photovoltaic (PV) installations. The impact of the time resolution of solar radiation data on estimating the available solar energy was investigated. For moving PV installations, the dynamics and the rate of changes in the available irradiation were studied in order to analyse the effects on maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithms. In addition, possibilities for harvesting PV energy in indoor environments were also investigated. The main contribution of this thesis is the effective testing of PV cells and complete PV panels: instead of measuring the characteristic I-V (Current-Voltage) response under strictly controlled artificial illumination, photovoltaics are simply biased externally. Then, with the help of synchronized thermography (ST), infrared (IR) images of the PV panel self-heating are recorded. In the obtained IR-images, defected areas are seen as cold spots, since they are not biased by the external power supply. From the calculated temperature variations, the size of the defect area can be calculated and, thus, the loss in output power can be estimated. The method is shown to work both with and without glass encapsulation. Tiivistelmä Tämä työ esittelee mittaustekniikoita ja mitattuja ja simuloituja tuloksia aurinkoenergian keruujärjestelmien suunnittelun avuksi. Työtä varten kehitettiin kustannustehokas mittausjärjestelmä, jonka avulla arvioitiin aurinkoenergian määrää sekä stationaarisen että liikkuvan valokennon tapauksissa. Näiden lisäksi tutkittiin mittaustaajuuden vaikutusta arvioitaessa saatavilla olevan aurinkoenergian määrää. Liikkuvan PV (photovoltaic)-asennuksen avulla tutkittiin saatavilla olevan aurinkoenergian vaihtelun suuruutta ja nopeutta tarkoituksena analysoida näiden vaikutuksia käytettäviin MPPT-algoritmeihin. Tämä lisäksi tutkittiin myös valoenergian keruumahdollisuuksia sisätiloissa. Työn tärkein kontribuutio on valokennojen ja kokonaisten valopaneelien toiminnallisuuden testaamisen tehostaminen. Tyypillisesti PV:n toiminnallisuus varmistetaan tarkasti määritetyssä ympäristössä suoritetun I-V -ominaiskäyrämittauksen avulla. Tämän työn menetelmä on yksinkertaisesti biasoida PV:t ulkoisesti, minkä jälkeen ST (synchronized thermpgraphy) -kuvauksen avulla määritetään PV-paneelien itselämpenemistä kuvaavat infrapunakuvat. Paneelin vioittuneet alueet erottuvat IR-kuvissa kylminä alueina ulkoisen biasoinnin puuttuessa. IR-kuvista havaituista lämpötilavaihteluista on mahdollista määrittää vioittuneen alueen koko ja siten arvioida myös menetettyä lähtötehoa. Kyseisen metodin toimivuus osoitettiin niin lasikoteloiduilla kuin ilman sitä olevilla PV-paneeleilla.

Kasvava uusiutuvan energian tarve ajaa tiedeyhteisöä etsimään uusia vihreitä energian lähteitä. Osana tätä tavoitetta, WISC-projekti pyrkii yhdistämään infrapunaa keräävän aurinkopaneelin normaaliin ikkunaan. Tässä tutkimuksessa me tutkimme sisääntulevan valon kytkeytymistä kallistuneesta kultananokartiosta laattamaisen aaltojohteen ohjattuihin aaltojohdemoodeihin; tavoitteena on esittää epäsymmetristä aaltojohteeseen kytkeytymistä. Tutkimus suoritettiin simuloimalla Comsolissa käyttäen kolmiulotteista äärellisten elementtien menetelmää. Ulospäin suuntautuva aaltojohteeseen sironneen valon energiavuo mitattiin 2.1 aallonpituuden päässä nanokartiosta. Tulokset viittaavat kahden samanaikaisen dipolaarisen plasmoniresonanssin olemassaoloon nanokartion sisällä ja että ne kykenevät sirottamaan valoa epäsymmetrisesti aaltojohdemoodeihin kapealla aallonpituuksien ja taittokulmien kaistaleella. Havaittu parhain mahdollinen tilanne viittaa siihen, että nanokartio kykenee sirottamaan valoa kallistusksen mukaiseen suuntaan 8.5 kertaa enemmän kuin kallistuken vastaiseen suuntaan. Nanopartikkelin muotoa ja kokoa voisi vielä optimoida pidemmälle jotta kahden dipolin välinen spektrien päällekkäisyys paranisi, mahdollisesti johtaen suurempaan epäsymmetriaan valon kytkennässä. Tulokset ovat tärkeä askel WISC-ikkunan takaisinsironnan minimoimisessa. The increasing global need for green energy drives the science community to find new green energy sources. As a part of that effort, the WISC-project aims to integrate an infrared-collecting solar panel into a normal window. In this study, we investigated the coupling of incident light into the guided modes of a slab waveguide by scattering from a tilted gold nanocone, with the goal of demonstrating asymmetric waveguide coupling. The study was done using three-dimensional finite element method simulations in Comsol. The outward energy flow of the scattered incident light into the waveguide modes was measured at a distance of 2.1 wavelengths from the nanocone. The results indicate the existence of two simultaneous dipolar particle plasmon resonances within the nanocone, and that they are capable of scattering light asymmetrically into the waveguide modes for a narrow range of wavelengths and particle tilt angles. The discovered best case scenario indicated that the nanocone can couple scattered light into the tilt direction 8.5 times more than into the opposing direction. The nanoparticle shape and size could be further optimized to achieve a better spectral overlap for the two dipoles, possibly leading to even higher coupling asymmetry. The results are an important step towards minimizing the back-scattering in a WISC-window.

Large scale photovoltaic (PV) solar power plants are gaining popularity in Chile. Solar energy potential in northern Chile is one of the best worldwide and true deserts are considered ideal environments for solar power plant projects. Atacama Desert is one of the driest places on earth. Nevertheless, northern Chile is home for many endemic species with 40 different vegetation types. The thesis presents studies of ecological effects (I-II) and location optimization of PV solar power plants in northern Chile (III). For ecological impacts two types of PV solar power plant technologies were studied: fixed mount solar plant and solar- tracking mounts. Study units were placed below the mounts or between the panels. Reference area was outside the panel area. Arthropod species composition was altered between shade and sun conditions at fixed mount power plant and, for example, dipterans were more common in shade conditions. Fixed mount solar power plants’ shade conditions can act as refuge to some arthropod groups, but for vegetation, shade conditions can disturb their florescence. Abiotic conditions limited local spider species habitat selection, but invasive spider species Lactrodectus geometricus could colonize mount legs of entire plant. Precaution should be taken when planning PV projects in areas with sensitive nature. Northern Chile is an ideal place for solar power plant projects because of its high solar energy potential but environmental and social aspects of site selection should be considered. Ideal places with low environmental and landscape value are in the absolute desert situated in the central valley starting from Arica and reaching until the northern part of Atacama region. Nevertheless, cities and historical sites should be avoided. The results of this thesis provide new information about ecological environment of PV plants and gives alternatives to multidisciplinary site selection.

A sustainable supply of energy is one of the most important requirements in order to achieve sustainable development. By using renewable resources society is not dependent on depleting reserves, but instead can have an inexhaustible source of clean energy. The rapid development of photovoltaics has led to lowered prices and increased efficiency making them more attractive alternative as a source of household electricity. Although governments play a key role in setting the constraints of how renewable energy is adopted, the wide-spread adoption of distributed electricity production ultimately depends on consumer decisions to buy them. This study examined the adoption process of photovoltaic micro production sys- tems in Finland. Furthermore, it concentrated on the characteristics and differences between adopters and non-adopters of photovoltaic systems and tried to recognize the barriers for adoption as well as factors that encourage adoption. The theoretical framework was built on Diffusion Of Innovations theory which has been previously utilized to model the diffusion of photovoltaic systems. This approach seeks to explain how, why and at what rate new ideas, products and technologies spread through society. The results of this study show, that the reasons and barriers for adoption vary greatly between individuals and the adoption process is far from straightforward. The most common barriers for adoption was economic terms such as high price and long payback time of the initial investment, greater complexity compared to electricity from the grid and fairly low level of knowledge of photovoltaic micro production. Moreover, factors that lead to adoption of photovoltaic systems was economic savings, necessity and the values of the adopter. Finally, when comparing the differences of adopters and non-adopters of photovoltaic systems of this study, they seem to differ in for example demographic characteristics and values. The motivation for this research came from the author's own interests and there was no commissioning company for this Master’s Thesis.

Solar PV mini-grid electrification application has been introduced in Ghana to provide electricity for some rural areas that are located disproportionately beyond the reach of the national grid. Through the Renewable Energy Act (832) enacted in 2011, the government of Ghana has developed policy plan to vigorously increase the share of renewable energy sources in the generation mix to 10% by the year 2020. In accordance with the policy, the Ghana Energy Development and Access Project (GEDAP) under the Ministry of Energy (MoE) have undertaken the goal to deploy solar PV mini-grid systems to supply electricity to the rural island communities on the Volta Lake. By virtue of their locations, the island communities have existed for many years without access to electricity. This is because reaching these communities through the conventional grid appears highly impractical. Qualitative research, case study method was used to examine the potential socio-economic and environmental impacts of the solar PV mini-grid project on the local communities, specifically Pediatorkope and Atigagorme. Three research questions were answered using qualitative content analsysis approach. Generally, the findings show that the solar PV mini-grid electricity is an ideal energy alternative for the island communities on the Volta Lake in Ghana. However, there are variations regarding the socio-economic and environmental impacts of the project on the communities. In terms of economic impact, given the energy level or capacity provided, the electricity fulfills the provision of light to boost and extend hours of petty trading and selling activities at night in the communities. The capacity does not support higher applications such as refrigerators, which could help improve the economic conditions of the fishing communities. Government intervention in the form of subsidies will be necessary to sustain the electricity services so as to extend its impact on the communities. Ultimately, the solar PV mini-grid electricity is likely to yield much social impact on the communities than any of the dimensions revealed in the study. Finally, positive environmental impact of the project on the communities will be achieved when majority of the inhabitants are eventually connected to the solar PV mini-grid electricity. There is a challenge concerning recycle and disposal of systems components such as batteries and PV cells after end-of-life. The study concludes that electricity supply in rural areas should bring more than just light to initiate improvement in the quality of life of rural dwellers.

During recent times, renewable energy technologies have shown a relative fast growth in the global energy investment, global energy capacity and their integration within multiple sectors, particularly in the electricity sector. Renewable energy technologies have also experienced notorious declining costs on their manufacturing production. Nevertheless, while this growth is widely acknowledged, the share of renewables with respect total energy production has been moderate. Technological advancements in renewable energy have demonstrated the potential of renewables in energy generation and also that renewables can provide direct and indirect advantages over their counterparts. This thesis investigates two specific cases in which the renewable energy technologies of wind power and solar photovoltaics could be widely employed on micro-scale energy generation. The study’s objective is to gain deeper understanding if such applications of these forms of renewables are, foremost, economically viable at micro-scale or individual level. The research was carried out by means of quantitative case study in which theoretical analysis, mathematical modelling, and experimental empirical measurements were employed in order to make a thoroughly analysis and cross validate the study’s results and findings. The results from this investigation suggest that the employment of wind and solar renewables at micro-scale are economically profitable if favourable weather conditions exist at the location. If there are no favourable weather conditions, then these renewables will be economically viable if external costs such as transportation, installation and maintenance are absorbed by the owner. Moreover, this thesis suggest that better incentives, besides economically, are needed such as communication strategies and wider distribution channels in order to promote the use of renewables to the general public. This thesis also suggests that by engaging in renewable energy generation by first-hand experience encourages a sense of responsibility and the importance of saving energy which would be difficult to attain otherwise.

Suomen ilmastostrategiassa määritellään pitkän aikavälin ilmastotavoitteeksi vähentää Suomen kasvihuonepäästöjä 80 % vuoden 1990 tasosta vuoteen 2050 mennessä. Jotta asetettu päästötavoite voitaisiin saavuttaa, tulisi Työ- ja elinkeinoministeriön arvion mukaan energiantuotannon päästöjen olla vuonna 2050 lähellä nolla-tasoa. Tämä tulee vaatimaan uusiutuvan energian tuotannon valtaisaa kasvua. Suomessa tähän tarpeeseen on pyritty vastaamaan ydinvoiman, tuulivoiman ja erilaisten biopolttoaineiden käyttöä lisäämällä. Kuitenkin globaalisti aurinkosähköä on pidetty lupaavimpana uusiutuvan energian tuotantomuotona. Pohjoisesta sijainnistaan huolimatta Etelä-Suomen vuotuinen säteilymäärä on verrannollinen moneen aurinkosähköä laajalti hyödyntävään alueeseen, kuten Belgiaan tai Pohjois-Saksaan. Julkisessa keskustelussa onkin usein peräänkuulutettu valtiolta toimia aurinkosähkön tukemiseksi, jotta myös suomalaiset kotitaloudet pääsisivät osaksi aurinkosähkömarkkinoita. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaankin kotitalouksien pienaurinkosähkön kannattavuutta Suomessa mallintamalla Etelä-Suomeen sijoitettuja hypoteettisia 2, 3 ja 5 kWp aurinkosähköjärjestelmiä. Analyysin avulla määritellään pienaurinkosähkön nykyinen kannattavuus ja arvioidaan mikä olisi vaadittu minimaalinen tukitaso eri tukijärjestelmiä hyödynnettäessä. Arvioitavia tukivaihtoehtoja ovat investointituki, syöttö- ja tuotantotariffit ja nettolaskutus. Tutkimustulosten perusteella kotitalouksien pienaurinkosähkö on kaukana kannattavuudesta ilman valtion tukitoimenpiteitä. Alan tutkimuskirjallisuuden ja muiden maiden kokemusten perusteella investointituki vaikuttaisi soveltuvan parhaiten Suomen olosuhteisiin. Kun aurinkosähkön avulla saavutettujen päästövähennysten yhteiskunnallinen arvo huomioidaan, voidaan kotitalouksien pienaurinkosähkön tukemista pitää perusteltuna. Tähän arvioon liittyy kuitenkin merkittävää epävarmuutta ja pienaurinkosähkön tukemisen kokonaishyvinvointivaikutusten arviointi vaatisi lisätutkimusta. Kotitalouksien aurinkosähköä ei tulisi sulkea pois teknologiavaihtoehtojen joukosta, mutta samaan aikaan monet julkisuudessa esitetyt aurinkosähkömyönteiset näkemykset vaikuttavat tutkimustulosten valossa yltiöoptimistisilta.

Water treatment technologies are seen as the best alternative to be considered for adoption in developing countries where access to portable water supply that is free of pathogens is yet a challenge. This study intended to assess impact brought forth by a project, which employed a water treatment technology in rural settings of Morogoro Region in Tanzania. The project used solar photovoltaic panels to trap solar energy, converted to mechanical power to treat water with the help of sterilization ultraviolet membrane. A comparative analysis was used as an assessment framework to study impacts of the project with respect to the quality of approach used during the project life cycle. Determinants of impacts took into account social, economic and environment aspects whereas determinants of the quality of approaches taken considered six elements which are: character of participation; success, nature of institution and capacity building efforts; diversity, multiplicity and adaptability of ideas promoted by the project; accounting for heterogeneity and dynamism; understanding and use of local knowledge, skills, initiative and constraints; and recognizing the influence of external conditions, markets and policies. Results indicate that the project has intervened positively in the provision of safe portable water to the selected project sites. The quality of approaches taken had profound effect to the delivered impacts. These impacts are seen in the reduced recurring outburst of water-borne diseases such as typhoid and diarrhea. Another impact observed is in the downturn to a certain extent in the use of wood fuel for boiling. Reduced recurring of waterborne diseases has boosted pupils’ attendance at school. Furthermore, the study argues that adoption of water treatment technologies in rural settings has a potential to conserve the environment, improve health of people through the provision of safe portable water, which ultimately contribute to rural development. However, sustainability of the installed purification systems is in question if it will continue to function over the long run. Observed barriers are lack of solid economic means for sustaining operations and maintenances.

The objective of this work is to investigate the viability of a wind, PV or hybrid wind-PV system supplemented with battery storage for electricity production to meet the electricity consumption of a typical household apartment in Central Finland. The assessment criteria for the analysis were cost of energy and total net present cost of each system configuration. We selected the Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables (HOMER) software, RETScreen, and PVsyst in our analysis and finally only HOMER was considered for performing system optimization analysis because of the creditability of its results. A PV-battery system is recognized as the most economically feasible option in our site with the lowest cost of energy as well as net present cost, however its application results in utilization of significant number of batteries which is not efficient. On the contrary, due to low wind speed in the site, the use of wind-battery power system comes out to be the most expensive option. The hybrid wind-PV-battery system is more preferable for its ability to diversify energy sources, and thus to increase reliability of the system and likely system performance, although it is more costly than the PV-battery system. For these reasons, the hybrid wind-PV battery system was recommended for supplying the electrical load requirement of our study.

Tutkielman tavoitteena on selvittää Jyväskylän asuinrakennusten aurinkosähköistä potentiaalia simuloimalla katolle asennettavan aurinkosähköjärjestelmän tuottoja ja vertaamalla niitä rakennuksen sähkönkulutukseen. Tarkastelu tehtiin tätä tarkoitusta varten suunnitellun MATLAB-ohjelman avulla. Laskennan pohjana käytettiin Jyväskylän yliopiston kemian laitoksen sääasemalta saatuja säteily-, lämpötila- ja tuulennopeusaineistoja vuosilta 2010 ja 2011. Tutkimuskohteina käytettiin viittä kerrostaloa, jotka sijaitsevat alle 1,5 kilometrin etäisyydellä sääasemasta. Tasakatolle sijoitettavat aurinkosähköpaneelit suunnattiin etelään 47 asteen kallistuskulmassa. Harjakatoille paneelit sijoitettiin lappeen suuntaisesti. Paneeliksi valittiin monikiteinen aurinkosähköpaneeli, jonka nimellisteho on 305 W. Kullekin kohteelle laskettiin kuukausi-, kausi- ja vuosikohtainen tuotto vuodelle 2010. Kunkin kohteen tuottoa verrattiin rakennuksen arvioituun laitesähkönkulutukseen, jonka oletettiin olevan 2400 kWh asuntoa kohti vuodessa. Lisäksi tarkasteltiin vuosien 2010 ja 2011 vuosituottojen välistä eroa sekä eri paneelityyppien vaikutusta saataviin tuottoihin. Esimerkkitapauksissa katolle asennetulla aurinkosähköjärjestelmällä voidaan mallinnuksen tulosten perusteella parhaassa tapauksessa kattaa noin 35% rakennuksen laitesähkönkulutuksesta. Tämä 35 prosentin osuus voidaan saavuttaa korkeintaan neljä- tai viisikerroksisissa rakennuksissa, sillä tätä korkeammilla rakennuksilla aurinkopaneelien asennukseen käytettävän kattopinta-alan suhde asuntojen määrään on liian pieni. Neliömetrikohtaisia tuottoja voitaisiin parantaa tehokkaammalla 345 W:n yksikidepaneelilla noin 14%, mikä vastaa noin paria prosenttiyksikköä kulutuksesta. Vuosien 2010 ja 2011 vuosituottojen välillä ei havaittu merkittävää eroa vuosikulutuksen kannalta. The aim of this thesis is to look into the photovoltaic potential of residental buildings in Jyväskylä by simulating the yield of a rooftop photovoltaic solar system and by comparing the yield with the electricity consumption of the building. A MATLAB program was developed for calculation purposes. Radiation, temperature and wind speed data for the years 2010 and 2011 were used for the calculations. The data were collected by the weather station of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Jyväskylä. Five apartment buildings, situated within a 1.5 km radius from the weather station, were used as case study samples. PV panels placed on flat roofs were directed to the south with a tilt angle of 47 degrees. The panels placed on pitched roofs were positioned in the direction of and with the tilt angle of the rooftop. The PV panel used was a polycrystalline silicon solar panel with a nominal power of 305 W. Monthly, seasonal and annual yields for the year 2010 were calculated for each of the case study buildings. The yield of each building was compared with the building’s approximate annual energy consumption of household appliances, which was assumed to be 2400 kWh per household per year. Yield differences between the years 2010 and 2011 were also studied, as well as the effects of selecting a different type of solar panel. Based on the calculations perfomed for the case study buildings, up to 35% of the annual energy consumption of household appliances could be covered with a rooftop PV system. This holds true for buildings up to 4 or 5 floors, since higher buildings have markedly less surface area for PV panels per household. If a monocrystalline solar panel with a nominal power rating of 345 W was used, yields per square meter could be increased by approximately 14%, which is equivalent to approximately two percentage points of the annual consumption. There was no significant difference between the annual yields of the years 2010 and 2011.

Tutkimuksessa etsittiin uusia kasvunlähteitä vaihteistojen valmistukseen, uusille energia-aloille ja teollisuusvaihde puolelle. Alojen kaupallinen kiinnostavuus tutkittiin Moventaksen kannalta sekä alustavasti vaihteiden tarve kyseisillä aloilla. Lisäksi tutkittiin mahdollisia tulevaisuuden kasvunaloja vaihdemarkkinoilla. Tavoitteena oli löytää aloja, joilla valmistetaan Jyväskylän tuotantotehtaiden kaltaisia vaihteistoja ja mahdollisesti saada tulevaisuudessa tuotantoon myös sellaisilta aloilta mihin ei ole ennen panostettu. Alkuun aloin tutkimaan aloja yleisellä tasolla ja kyseisistä aloista tehtiin taulukkoon analysointi. Analysoinnin pohjalta valittiin kaksi alaa paremmin selvitettävien joukkoon ja otettiin selvää paremmin näiden alojen vaihteisto tarpeista.
