Jupiter's Great Red Spot (GRS) was mapped by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST)/Mid‐Infrared Instrument (4.9–27.9 μ ${\upmu }$m) in July and August 2022. These observations took place alongside a suite of visual and infrared observations from; Hubble, JWST/NIRCam, Very Large Telescope/VISIR and amateur observers which provided both spatial and temporal context across the jovian disc. The stratospheric temperature structure retrieved using the NEMESIS software revealed a series of hot‐spots above the GRS. These could be the consequence of GRS‐induced wave activity. In the troposphere, the temperature structure was used to derive the thermal wind structure of the GRS vortex. These winds were only consistent with the independently determined wind field by JWST/NIRCam at 240 mbar if the altitude of the Hubble‐derived winds were located around 1,200 mbar, considerably deeper than previously assumed. No enhancement in ammonia was found within the GRS but a link between elevated aerosol and phosphine abundances was observed within this region. North‐south asymmetries were observed in the retrieved temperature, ammonia, phosphine and aerosol structure, consistent with the GRS tilting in the north‐south direction. Finally, a small storm was captured north‐west of the GRS that displayed a considerable excess in retrieved phosphine abundance, suggestive of vigorous convection. Despite this, no ammonia ice was detected in this region. The novelty of JWST required us to develop custom‐made software to resolve challenges in calibration of the data. This involved the derivation of the "FLT‐5" wavelength calibration solution that has subsequently been integrated into the standard calibration pipeline. Despite the frequency of observations, crucial questions remain unanswered regarding the internal composition, dynamics and driving mechanism for the storm. Mid‐infrared observations acquired by the James Webb Space Telescope allowed us to peer past the colorful clouds to assess the composition and dynamics of the jovian weather layer. Data from the mid‐infrared instrument was modeled in the 7.30–10.75 μ ${\upmu }$m range to "retrieve" the temperature distribution. Further modeling of these temperatures allowed us to derive the wind speeds throughout the vortex, enabling us to assess the dynamics of the GRS and how the vortex interacts with its surroundings. In addition, a series of hot‐spots were observed above the GRS that could be the result of atmospheric wave activity. The distribution of ammonia was also mapped in this spectral range. Comparison of the distribution of ammonia to the cloud distribution implied that this molecule may condense into the thick layers of cloud above the GRS. Finally phosphine, indicative of upwelling air was mapped and allowed us to identify a small convective storm north‐west of the GRS. An analysis of the high-resolution ( R ∼ 48000 ) optical spectrum of hot (B1Ibe) post-AGB star LS 4331 (IRAS 17381−1616) is presented. The detailed identification of the observed absorption and emission features in the wavelength range 3700–9200 Å is carried out for the first time. The atmospheric parameters and chemical composition of the star are derived from the non-LTE analysis of absorption lines. We estimated T eff = 20900 ± 500 K, log g = 2.57 ± 0.08 , V r = - 51.7 ± 0.8 km s - 1 , ξ t = 24 ± 4 km s - 1 and v sin i = 30 ± 5 km s - 1 . An abundance analysis for C, N, O, Mg, Al, S, and Si reveals that the N and O abundance is close to solar while metal underabundances relative to the solar value (i.e., [ Mg / H ] = - 1.04 dex, [ Al / H ] = - 1.20 dex, [ Si / H ] = - 0.46 dex) are found. LS 4331 is a high galactic latitude metal-poor and carbon-deficient hot post-AGB star. The underabundance of carbon ( [ C / H ] = - 0.64 dex) is similar to that found in other hot post-AGB stars and indicates that the star's AGB phase of evolution was terminated before the third dredge-up. Plasma diagnostics are derived from the nebular emission lines. The presence of nebular emission lines in the spectrum of LS 4331 indicates that the photoionization of the circumstellar envelope has already started. The nebular parameters and expansion velocity of the nebula are derived. Using the Gaia DR3 distance, the absolute luminosity of the star is derived, and the star's position on the post-AGB evolutionary tracks suggests that its initial main sequence mass is about 1.2 M ⊙ . It is also reported that fast irregular brightness variations with an amplitude of up to 0.3 mag in the V band have been found in the star, typical of hot post-AGB objects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The chemical compositions of stars encode the history of the universe and are thus fundamental for advancing our knowledge of astrophysics and cosmology. However, measurements of elemental abundance ratios, and our interpretations of them, strongly depend on the physical assumptions that dictate the generation of synthetic stellar spectra. Three-dimensional radiation-hydrodynamic (3D RHD) box-in-a-star simulations of stellar atmospheres offer a more realistic representation of surface convection occurring in late-type stars than do traditional one-dimensional (1D) hydrostatic models. As evident from a multitude of observational tests, the coupling of 3D RHD models with line formation in nonlocal thermodynamic equilibrium (non-LTE) today provides a solid foundation for abundance analysis for many elements. This review describes the ongoing and transformational work to advance the state of the art and replace 1D LTE spectrum synthesis with its 3D non-LTE counterpart. In summary: 3D and non-LTE effects are intricately coupled, and consistent modeling thereof is necessary for high-precision abundances; such modeling is currently feasible for individual elements in large surveys. Mean 3D (〈3D〉) models are not adequate as substitutes. The solar abundance debate is presently dominated by choices and systematic uncertainties that are not specific to 3D non-LTE modeling. 3D non-LTE abundance corrections have a profound impact on our understanding of FGK-type stars, exoplanets, and the nucleosynthetic origins of the elements. Duck decoys are trapping devices designed to catch ducks. From the fourteenth century onwards, duck decoys emerged in riverine lowlands in northwestern Europe. Their operation is based on a rigorously maintained physical structure with a woodland that encloses a water body with protruding extensions called pipes, which end in nets and are surrounded by reed screens. Catching ducks in these places requires a complex interplay between different groups of ducks, a dog, and a human decoyman who together are enmeshed in what becomes a deeply deceptive landscape. This paper explores duck decoys in the Netherlands as relational, situated and co‐designed multispecies atmospheres. Through ethnographic descriptions of field visits, interviews and by drawing on historical accounts, we trace how inter‐ and intraspecies relations and behaviours are interpreted in terms of deception, betrayal, trust and curiosity. The varying interpretations of behaviours and the more‐than‐human knowledges at play reflect the essentially elusive character of the duck decoy. Especially when facing the environmental challenges of the Anthropocene, duck decoys and the ambiguous relations that were until recently maintained in them, encourage us to consider the historical trapping and hunting landscapes as places made by multispecies atmospheres. Even though these atmospheres and the intimate collectives of human and more‐than‐human lives have become increasingly fragile, their afterlives resonate through the changing character of the riverine landscape and its various waterfowl, as well as practices of knowing and conserving biodiversity. Within political ecology research, a dominant focus on the hard physicality of the world limits engagement with how events taking place on land mediate and are mediated by other material spaces like the atmosphere. This article engages with burgeoning research on the extraction–conservation nexus to show how the clearly demarcated land-based boundaries on which nexus thinking relies limit an awareness of how processes of conservation and extraction cohere and take shape in and through the aerial atmosphere. The article substantiates this argument with case studies on Guyana and Suriname, two countries that have been working on avoiding deforestation through Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation for over a decade in the aim of mitigating climate change. In each case, we examine three years of news reporting on recent, major oil finds in the Guyana-Suriname Basin. The news reports, set against longer term research, demonstrate a narrative pivot from "green," land-based avoided deforestation narratives to "black," offshore extractive ones. The reports show that reference to the competing atmospheric effects of the mutual pursuit of these activities is scarce, even at a time of rapidly intensifying climate change. Hence, we argue that a voluminous analysis of the extraction–conservation nexus integrating a vertical awareness of the ever-present and unbounded atmosphere harbors potential for orienting a less contradictory politics of climate change—one that recognizes how activities deemed oppositional on land take shape in the shared, unbounded atmosphere. This paper is concerned with exploring legal atmospheres during colonial expansionism and the early period of confederation of British Columbia. By describing the theatrical and performative aspects of legal colonialism, the archival documents from this time represent interesting, yet oft-overlooked, significances that attention to sensory and affective experiences captures. Examining "affective atmospheres" disclosed in such colonial settings reveals ways that the colonial regime promulgated its influence in non-rational, non-legal manners. As well, drawing out the material conditions of topography shows how the environment acts more than just a backdrop for the staging of legal expansionism, as it acts also as a constitutive force in the development of colonial legal arrangements. At the same time, the colonial regime was forgetful of these same contextual, topographical, and atmospheric origins of law insofar as it promulgated myths of the universality, objectivity, and superiority of English law. This paper examines a particular technique of weaponising smell – the spraying of 'skunk water', a crowd control tool originally developed by the Israeli Police to disperse Palestinian protests – and the olfactory atmospheres of moving matter it extends its violence through. It focuses particularly on ways in which skunk water spraying operates by 'weathering' the air with a stench that sticks on bodies, objects and spaces, often for considerably long periods. By elaborating the two entwined aspects of weathering – the weaponising and the meteorological – the paper shows how skunk water spraying engenders malodourous olfactory durations that move and through their movement extend their violence through meteorological fluidities and moving bodies/objects. The violence of skunk water, we so argue, contains lingering tempos that through material morphoses (water, mist, droplets, dried powder), reactivating/intensifying weather conditions (rain, heat, humidity, wind), and material kinetics (moving bodies, objects and air) spatialise proximities of atmospheric stench, hence targeting the way breathing bodies are immersed in their olfactory environments. By comprehending weathering as weaponised 'matter in motion', the paper offers a novel way of thinking about atmospheric violence through non-linear movements and lingering proximities – namely, as a weaponisation of an olfactory duration of a stinky matter that moves. The Allied bombing campaigns over the German cities during World War II produced a vast landscape of destruction, which has been the object of reports, accounts and fictional narratives. Cities and buildings, a fundamental architectural heritage binding individuals and communities to their existential spaces, were annihilated in the most extensive act of deliberate destruction in human history. In this article, I look into the work of three authors - Heinrich Böll, Stig Dagerman and Hans Erich Nossack - to outline the effects of the bombings on the survivors, and on their relationship to both urban space and architectural heritage. Over the last decade, several former Australian AIDS Councils (turned LGBT health organisations) have opened dedicated primary healthcare clinics for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people. Operating at the intersection of medical practice and queer politics, these clinics try to enact a type of care that is attuned to the power relations between LGBT people and medicine. This analysisis based on situated interviews with practice managers which examined the affective intent of LGBT clinics. By examining how practice managers consider location, the curation of art and health promotion materials, and the employment of peer workers, this article argues that LGBT clinics are helping to make LGBT health a tangible and meaningful subcategory of public health by designing spaces in which medicine can be encountered within a ‘queer atmosphere’. In this introduction to the special issue on massive urbanisation, the collective that has prepared this issue reviews the thinking and experiences that have been important to them. The reflections centre on the use of 'massive' in Jamaican patois, where it has two countervailing meanings. On the one hand, it means an inordinate lack of sensitivity to the real conditions taking place, a sense of extreme self‐inflation beyond reason. On the other, it means a collectivity coming into being without a set form, but reflective of a desire for collaboration and mutuality. Massive urbanisation thus means here both the voluminous expansion of speculative accumulation, extraction of land value, replication of vast inequities and disfunction, and the continuous emergence of new forms of urban inhabitation, a constant remaking of the social field by what has been called the urban majority. All of the contributions attempt to work with this sense of doubleness, amplifying the creation of particular atmospheres of the urban as a materiality of its heterogeneity. A collective of urban researchers working in nine major regions of the Global South came together over the past 18 months to think through the notion of the massive beyond its conventional connotations of mushrooming populations and a voluminous and explosive mass beyond apprehension or control. The collective also sought to think of urban extensiveness as something involving the temporality of dreams, ambivalent desires, improvised manoeuvres, and unruly inclinations in addition to the generalisation of commodity forms and capital accumulation. Initially conceived as an interview with the hybrid media artist Brian Goeltzenleuchter, this text gradually took the form of a conversation on various issues regarding olfactory art and the aesthetic significance of smell. Framing the artistic uses of odours in the context of contemporary art, the paper discloses some of its foundational traits, variations, and underlying impulses. By commenting on Goeltzenleuchter’s olfactory artworks through a philosophical perspective, this contribution covers a number of subjects including the notion of atmosphere, the socio-cultural values and narratives conveyed by scents, the suggestive relationship between spaces and aromas, and the phenomenology of smells as compared to the experience of sounds. Consistent with how smell perception unfolds, the dialogue flows in a form that is not rigidly structured but airy, ephemeral, and fluid, developing a sequence of insights whose aim is, rather than scrutinising a specific topic, to evoke the essence of olfactory poetics as a whole.

Atmospheres are experiences of place involving transformations of consumers' behaviors and emotions. Existing marketing research reveals how atmospheric stimuli, service performances, and ritual place-making enhance place experiences and create value for firms. Yet it remains unclear how shared experiences of atmosphere emerge and intensify among groups of people during collective live events. Accordingly, this article uses sociological interaction ritual theory to conceptualize "social atmospheres": rapidly changing qualities of place created when a shared focus aligns consumers' emotions and behavior, resulting in lively expressions of collective effervescence. With data from an ethnography of an English Premier League football stadium, the authors identify a four-stage process of creating atmospheres in interaction ritual chains. This framework goes beyond conventional retail and servicescape design by demonstrating that social atmospheres are mobile and cocreated between firms and consumers before, during, and after a main event. The study also reveals how interaction rituals can be disrupted and offers insight as to how firms can balance key tensions in creating social atmospheres as a means to enhance customer experiences, customer loyalty, and communal place attachments. In this paper, I reflect on the experience of the Australian summer bushfires of 2019/2020 and the different ways forms of media reporting amplified its affects. Across broadcast media, local response, social media and personal account, I chart alternate stories during and after the event-as-spectacle. Taking into account the socio-political climate, the climatic atmosphere and the ongoing anxiety after the fires, I consider the use of apocalyptic words alongside the repetitive pairing of affective images to question what these might reveal about ourselves. Through the lens of affect attention is drawn to the many interacting conditions and forces that coalesce and gather as attachments, ideas, or assumptions and how these might influence perceptions of the event and actions in the aftermath of fire threat. Woven into the paper is my personal writing alongside details drawn from select Instagram accounts recording the everyday labours of caring for a place during and after the fires. As a counter-narrative to obliteration and all things lost, these missives disclose a different understanding of the event, long after the news media has moved on. The wind is the topic of a desirable pathic aesthetics and neophenomenology of air. More specifically, it is a good example of an atmospheric ephemeral quasi-thing, because, as religions have always recognized, it blows where it wishes. It involves us on the affective and felt-bodily level as an atmospheric feeling poured out into pre-dimensional space: that is, as a very concrete experience, significantly both climatic and affective, physical and felt-bodily. Unlike full-fledged things, the wind is not edged, discrete, cohesive, or solid; it does not possess immanent and regular tendencies; it can appear in a partial form, without doing so through fragments and sides; it is (felt as) more immediate and intrusive than things, generating inhibiting or attracting motor suggestions; it dies down with the same inexplicable immediacy with which it rises; it does not have a threefold causality (cause-action-effect) but a twofold one (cause/action-effect). Given these quasi-thingly wind characteristics, the paper sketches a review of the main types of felt-bodily resonance, within a range whose two extremes are narrowness and vastness, triggered by windy atmospheres (for example sudden gust of wind, breeze, shallow wind, stormy wind and calm). Understanding surface temperature is important for habitability. Recent work on Mars has found that the dependence of surface temperature on elevation (surface lapse rate) converges to zero in the limit of a thin CO2 atmosphere. However, the mechanisms that control the surface lapse rate are still not fully understood. It remains unclear how the surface lapse rate depends on both greenhouse effect and surface pressure. Here, we use climate models to study when and why "mountaintops are cold." We find the tropical surface lapse rate increases with the greenhouse effect and with surface pressure. The greenhouse effect dominates the surface lapse rate transition and is robust across latitudes. The pressure effect is important at low latitudes in moderately opaque (τ ∼ 0.1) atmospheres. A simple model provides insights into the mechanisms of the transition. Our results suggest that topographic cold‐trapping may be important for the climate of arid planets. On Earth, we know "mountaintops are cold," which means that surface temperature decreases with elevation. However, this idea does not apply on present‐day Mars. Here, we investigate when and why the Earth‐based understanding holds for planets with different types of atmospheres. Using a global climate model, we show that both the greenhouse effect (atmospheric infrared opacity) and the pressure effect (atmospheric turbulence) are important. The weaker the greenhouse effect, or the thinner the atmosphere, the slower the surface cools with elevation. The greenhouse effect plays the dominant role, but in moderately opaque atmospheres, the pressure effect becomes important as well. Our work reveals a novel connection between climate and geomorphology. For example, on a planet with a relative thin pure O2 or N2 atmosphere, we do not expect that "mountaintops are cold." This review presents an insight into our current knowledge of the atmospheres of the planets Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, the satellite Titan, and those of exoplanets. It deals with the thermal structure, aerosol properties (hazes and clouds, dust in the case of Mars), chemical composition, global winds, and selected dynamical phenomena in these objects. Our understanding of atmospheres is greatly benefitting from the discovery in the last 3 decades of thousands of exoplanets. The exoplanet properties span a broad range of conditions, and it is fair to expect as much variety for their atmospheres. This complexity is driving unprecedented investigations of the atmospheres, where those of the solar systems bodies are the obvious reference. We are witnessing a significant transfer of knowledge in both directions between the investigations dedicated to Solar System and exoplanet atmospheres, and there are reasons to think that this exchange will intensity in the future. We identify and select a list of research subjects that can be conducted at optical and infrared wavelengths with future and currently available ground-based and space-based telescopes, but excluding those from the space missions to solar system bodies. A growing number of lay Buddhist practitioners have sought out alternative ways to incorporate Buddhist teachings in their daily practices and make positive changes in society by "doing good" for others. Sometimes recognized as part of "humanistic Buddhism," this approach emphasizes general morality and focuses on people who need help as a way to fulfill Buddhist teachings in this world. Some Chinese Buddhist practitioners who follow the Tibetan Buddhist tradition also carry out similar humanistic engagements but use more subtle space‐making processes and often "brand" these as Buddhist practices. Drawing on the ethnographic observations of lay Buddhist practitioners in urban China, this article examines how urban practitioners promote (middle‐class) morality and well‐being lifestyles through what I call "atmospheric Buddhism." Ultimately, the article argues that an alternative mode of Buddhist practice is emerging in Chinese urban environments in order to cope with politically constrained environments. Martian global dust storms (GDS) can significantly affect the water cycle in the lower atmosphere (0−40 km). We compare the evolution of water vapor abundances, dust opacity and surface temperatures in the Southern Polar Region (SPR) during GDS years of MY25, MY28, and MY34 relative to years without GDS. During all GDS years, the vapor abundances decrease in the lower atmosphere in the SPR following the storm. Our results suggest that this decrease could be the result of disruption of the southward transport of vapor by atmospheric circulation. Alternatively, the decrease in vapor abundances could be caused by decreased desorption of vapor from the subsurface. Plain Language Summary: This work presents comprehensive analysis of how water vapor in the Martian polar atmosphere reacts to large dust storms in different years. Measurements of water vapor, atmospheric dust, and surface temperatures collected by different spacecraft instruments in years with and without large dust storms are compared. Large dust storms decrease the amount of water vapor in the southern polar region. Here we review the last advances in our understanding of exoplanetary upper atmospheres, with a focus on the evaporation of exoplanets orbiting close to their stars. The atmospheric escape takes a significant part on the phenomena that sculpt the population of planets with short orbital distances.We also observe evaporation of minor bodies in young planetary systems when they approach to their star. These “exocomets” have been studied since the mid 80’s, yielding a large amount of observational data. In particular, in the case of exocomets orbiting the young star $\beta $ Pictoris, it has been shown that there are two different families of comets, tracing two different dynamical histories. Most recently, photometric observations with the NASA TESS space observatory allowed the detection of the dust tails produced by the evaporation of the exocomets’ nuclei. Using numerical simulation these observations allowed the derivation of the comets nuclei size distribution, which is found to be strikingly similar to the one observed in the Solar system and to the one expected for a collisionally relaxed population of minor bodies.

Abstract Jupiter's atmosphere comprises several dynamical regimes: the equatorial eastward flows and surrounding retrograde jets; the midlatitudes, with the eddy‐driven, alternating jet‐streams and meridional circulation cells; and the jet‐free turbulent polar region. Despite intensive research conducted on each of these dynamical regimes over the past decades, they remain only partially understood. Saturn's atmosphere also encompasses similar distinguishable regimes, but observational evidence for midlatitude deep meridional cells is lacking. Models offer a variety of explanations for each of these regions, but only a few are capable of simulating more than one of the regimes at once. This study presents new numerical simulations using a 3D deep anelastic model that can reproduce the equatorial flows as well as the midlatitudinal pattern of the mostly barotropic, alternating eddy‐driven jets and the meridional circulation cells accompanying them. These simulations are consistent with recent Juno mission gravity and microwave data. We find that the vertical eddy momentum fluxes are as important as the meridional eddy momentum fluxes, which drive the midlatitudinal circulation on Earth. In addition, we discuss the parameters controlling the number of midlatitudinal jets/cells, their extent, strength, and location. We identify the strong relationship between meridional circulation and the zonal jets in a deep convection setup, and analyze the mechanism responsible for their generation and maintenance. The analysis presented here provides another step in the ongoing pursuit of understanding the deep atmospheres of gas giants.

Retrieval methods are a powerful analysis technique for modelling exoplanetary atmospheres by estimating the bulk physical and chemical properties that combine in a forward model to best fit an observed spectrum, and they are increasingly being applied to observations of directly imaged exoplanets. We have adapted taurex3 , the Bayesian retrieval suite, for the analysis of near-infrared spectrophotometry from directly imaged gas giant exoplanets and brown dwarfs. We demonstrate taurex3 's applicability to sub-stellar atmospheres by presenting results for brown dwarf benchmark GJ 570D which are consistent with previous retrieval studies, whilst also exhibiting systematic biases associated with the presence of alkali lines. We also present results for the cool exoplanet 51 Eri b, the first application of a free chemistry retrieval analysis to this object, using spectroscopic observations from GPI and SPHERE. While our retrieval analysis is able to explain spectroscopic and photometric observations without employing cloud extinction, we conclude this may be a result of employing a flexible temperature-pressure profile which is able to mimic the presence of clouds. We present Bayesian evidence for an ammonia detection with a 2.7σ confidence, the first indication of ammonia in a directly imaged exoplanetary atmosphere. This is consistent with this molecule being present in brown dwarfs of a similar spectral type. We demonstrate the chemical similarities between 51 Eri b and GJ 570D in relation to their retrieved molecular abundances. Finally, we show that overall retrieval conclusions for 51 Eri b can vary when employing different spectral data and modelling components, such as temperature–pressure and cloud structures. ESA's Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer (JUICE) will provide a detailed investigation of the Jovian system in the 2030s, combining a suite of state-of-the-art instruments with an orbital tour tailored to maximise observing opportunities. We review the Jupiter science enabled by the JUICE mission, building on the legacy of discoveries from the Galileo, Cassini, and Juno missions, alongside ground- and space-based observatories. We focus on remote sensing of the climate, meteorology, and chemistry of the atmosphere and auroras from the cloud-forming weather layer, through the upper troposphere, into the stratosphere and ionosphere. The Jupiter orbital tour provides a wealth of opportunities for atmospheric and auroral science: global perspectives with its near-equatorial and inclined phases, sampling all phase angles from dayside to nightside, and investigating phenomena evolving on timescales from minutes to months. The remote sensing payload spans far-UV spectroscopy (50-210 nm), visible imaging (340-1080 nm), visible/near-infrared spectroscopy (0.49-5.56 μm), and sub-millimetre sounding (near 530-625 GHz and 1067-1275 GHz). This is coupled to radio, stellar, and solar occultation opportunities to explore the atmosphere at high vertical resolution; and radio and plasma wave measurements of electric discharges in the Jovian atmosphere and auroras. Cross-disciplinary scientific investigations enable JUICE to explore coupling processes in giant planet atmospheres, to show how the atmosphere is connected to (i) the deep circulation and composition of the hydrogen-dominated interior; and (ii) to the currents and charged particle environments of the external magnetosphere. We have searched for lines of the radioactive element technetium (Tc) in the spectrum of Przybylski's star (HD 101065). The nuclei of this chemical element are formed in the slow process of capturing thermalized neutrons. The possible lines of Tc I are heavily blended. We have synthesized the profile of one resonance line at 4297.06 Å , which is also a part of the complex blend, and we arrived at a decision that it is not visible in the spectrum (as was first noted by Ryabchikova), casting doubt on the existence of technetium in the atmosphere of the Przybylski's star. Therefore, based on our calculated combined profile, which has been adjusted to the observed blend profile at ≈ 4297.2 Å (that may possibly contain the resonance technetium line 4297.06 Å), we reduce the maximum technetium abundance to logϵ(Tc/H) = 2.5. The spectral characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres is a relatively new subject. Until recently, space and ground-based observatories allowed only a few planets to be observed with spectroscopic instruments. The arrival of JWST data and the development of new instruments on Earth will drastically modify the situation, giving access to deeper modelling contraints and to a better understanding on planet formation and evolution. This paper is devoted to describe the turning point experienced by the astronomy of exoplanets that will continue in particular with the launch of the ESA/Ariel mission at the end of the decade.

High-precision radial-velocity measurements in the near-infrared allow one to search for exoplanet signals around the lowest-mass stars, including young ones. Because these stars can be among the most active ones, it is essential to characterize their magnetic activity. SPIRou, installed at the Canada–France–Hawai’i telescope, was designed to explore such planetary systems and characterize their properties. With a wide spectral range and large resolving power, SPIRou is also optimized for transmission spectroscopy and for investigating the chemical composition of exoplanetary atmospheres.

Atomic H is a direct tracer of water loss at Mars. The recent discovery of annual enhancements in its escape rate near perihelion, in excess of the previously established theory, indicates that Mars has lost substantial amounts of water to space. However, these loss rates are often estimated assuming thermal properties for the exospheric H atoms and are therefore a lower limit. Past analyses of spacecraft observations delivered indirect evidence for the existence of an energetic non‐thermal H population without a clear detection. Here, we present the unambiguous observational signature of non‐thermal H at Mars, consistent with solar wind charge exchange as the primary driver for its production. The calculated non‐thermal escape rates are as high as ∼26% of the thermal rate near aphelion and solar minima. An active Sun would increase the present‐day escape rate and a younger energetic Sun likely contributed toward the significant historic loss of water from Mars. Plain Language Summary: The total water lost by Mars is determined by calculating the number of H atoms permanently escaping its upper atmosphere into space at present and extrapolating it back in time. The present‐day escape rate of H does not account for energetic H atoms, which were postulated to exist but not previously observed to date. Such a population would enhance the H escape rate further, thereby increasing the total volume of the water lost by Mars. This work presents the first confirmed signature of energetic H atoms in the atmosphere of Mars and finds that interaction of the neutral H population in its uppermost atmospheric layer, that is, its exosphere, with the solar wind results in its creation. The amount of energetic H atoms produced depends on the Mars' atmospheric conditions such as temperature and density of neutral H atoms in the exosphere, solar activity, and Mars' position around the Sun. Since the younger Sun was much more active than today, it is likely that the interaction of an early Martian exosphere with the stronger solar wind resulted in the loss of a larger fraction of H atoms into space than has been estimated to date. In this article, we wish to clarify the way of being and appearing of ambiences. First of all, by distinguishing them on the one hand from lived experiences and on the other hand from external things; then by making the hypothesis of a third mode of being which comes from what stands between the subjects and the objects and which belongs neither to the one nor to the other. Finally, our proposal aims at showing that if the atmospheres are properties of the situations even before the subjects feel them, they feel them anyway only as these intrinsic and presubjective properties. This paper examines the atmosphere of mistrust that permeated the response to the tenth Ebola epidemic in Eastern DRC (2018–2020). The concept of an 'atmosphere of mistrust' that we develop in this article directs attention to the elusive-yet-pervasive presence of mistrust in interactions between responders and communities during the Ebola epidemic. This analysis focuses on the popular notion that 'Ebola is a business'. Our interviewees frequently used this saying during our research on the Ebola response to explain why mistrust had emerged, how it materialized, and against whom it was directed. Based on these interviews, we examine 'Ebola is a business' as a slogan that enabled people to voice mistrust. This slogan, as we aim to show, resonated with a wider atmosphere of mistrust that governed the emergency situation in Eastern DRC. In using it, people responded to their perceptions of mistrust whilst simultaneously perpetuating and extending this atmosphere of mistrust. Our analysis of the atmosphere of mistrust highlights the power of atmospheres in governing situations, mobilizing people, and disrupting structures of discrimination. It aims to contribute to a better understanding of the barriers inhibiting the collaborations between affected communities and responders, which are required to deliver effective epidemic responses.
