The goal of this study was to assess students' responses to a potentially triggering passage from literature using differing trigger warnings. 123 undergraduates read a passage which contained depictions of physical and sexual assault. Students were randomly assigned to differing trigger warning conditions prior to reading the passage that anticipated either neutral, positive, or negative emotional reactions. Measures of PTSD symptoms and distress were taken on Day 1, Day 2, and Day 14. Distress to the triggering passage did not vary as a function of either trauma history or trigger warning type. Those with higher PTSD scores to start did not experience more distress over time. The data suggest that instructors can assign challenging passages with the expectation that those with related traumas will not be disproportionately affected. While recent scholarly attention has focused on serious, indicatable violent crime in Scotland, this article considers the more common offence of lower-level assault that was dealt with summarily in police magistrate courts in the nineteenth century. It explores the role that police courts played in conceptualising, categorising and processing such violence, the role assault played in Scottish urban communities and the culture that surrounded it. The article also examines how magistrates dealt with assault and what this might suggest about the impact of the police and the courts on violent behavioural patterns. It argues that interpersonal violence had a more important, complex and nuanced role to play in Scottish urban communities than conclusions based on criminal indictments suggest. Assault was a disturbingly accepted facet of conflict resolution, a means of exerting authority and patriarchy in communities and households and an ever-present threat with which a sizeable percentage of the urban masses had to live. The article stresses that the boundaries between lower-level assault that was dealt with summarily and more serious (or 'aggravated') assault that was tried in a higher court on indictment were determined not just by the nature of violence wielded or the injury sustained, but by a raft of social, cultural and practical factors. Indeed, the rise of summary justice in the form of police courts helped to lower indictment rates for serious assault, as magistrates often dealt summarily with assaults that warranted a more serious charge. Objective Methods Results Conclusions To determine the associations between lid and conjunctival injuries (LACI), non‐fatal strangulation (NFS) and domestic family violence (DFV) in non‐sexual assault.The present study involves an analysis of LACI in a clinical audit of 85 sequential non‐sexual assault presentations.LACI was present in 26.9% of non‐sexual assault cases, and 47.4% of LACI patients also experienced NFS. LACI was sustained in the context of DFV in 62.9% of cases. Females made up 69.2% of LACI patients, with those between 14 and 29 years most at risk. Children were present in 12.8% of cases, 78.2% of perpetrators were male and 44.9% of patients had previously been assaulted by the same perpetrator.LACI is frequently associated with NFS and/or DFV. Since NFS increases future homicide attempts and events more than sixfold, LACI is an important signal about a patient's homicide risk, expanding the dimensions of the care needed. Those experiencing LACI during an assault also need to be referred for comprehensive eye examination as soon as possible. With consent, systematic forensic photography of LACI enables its assessment and documentation, which assists the legal process. Background: Any medical college hospital's emergency room should constantly be prepared to treat a wide range of cases that are brought in. Knowing the patterns of cases that are presented before it is crucial for this reason, as is making the necessary arrangements to handle them. Materials and methods: The present study is retrospective study to know the trends of medico legal cases brought to SSG Hospital, Vadodara from July 1st, 2016 to December 31st, 2016. Cases include those brought to the hospital's casualty department. Results: A total number of 5408 cases were reported between July 1st, 2016 to December 31st, 2016. Among the 5408 cases reported, 79.99% were male and 26.01% were female making a male to female ratio 3:1. It was observed that urban victims constituted 51.09% and the rural victims were 48.91%. Similar 27.59% were in the age group 21-30 years followed by 21.95% in the 31-40 age group. The maximum number of cases were of RTA's (38.31%) followed by assault (20.25%) and poisoning (9.28%). Conclusion: The current study offers data on the trend of medico legal cases brought to SSG Hospital, Vadodara, including details on the cases' age, sex, and etiological factors. Restorative Justice is a new approach emphasizing dialogue and peace in crime resolution, prioritizing addressing the core issues between individuals. In cases of assault, which involve unlawful acts causing harm or injury, Restorative Justice is typically applied to minor cases. However, Police Regulation Number 8 of 2021 expands Restorative Justice to encompass both minor and severe assault cases, as implemented in North Halmahera Police Resort. This empirical research collects primary and secondary data through field studies and literature reviews, employing qualitative analysis. Findings highlight the urgency of police implementation of Restorative Justice in assault cases to achieve substantial and balanced justice. Implementation has occurred in North Halmahera Police Resort in accordance with Police Regulation Number 8 of 2021, yet faces challenges such as socialization, cultural adaptation, and coordination between victims and perpetrators. Future law enforcement policies based on Restorative Justice must adapt to existing challenges, including wider socialization and cultural adaptation. Understanding the importance of victims' and perpetrators' presence in the Restorative Justice process also requires enhancement.

Numerous grievances have been lodged against police officers who abused their mandate to use force, which is a matter that has raised serious concern not only in policing circles but in the media as well. Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) reports do not provide adequate information on how cases related to assault occurred nor when they occurred. Therefore, this empirical study was conducted to enlighten an understanding of rogue officers’ misuse of force that resulted in criminal cases of assault. The researcher conducted one-on-one interviews with ten IPID investigating officers from KwaZulu-Natal province. Through the use of a thematic analysis process, the findings revealed that police officers used force before a suspect resisted arrest, during suspect resistance and after containing a resisting suspect. Furthermore, it was revealed that police used force when a suspect questioned their procedures and became violent when a suspect was disrespectful towards the police, and sometimes as a form of intimidation even though there was no threat. Even when the threat had been contained and the suspects arrested, the police failed to cease using force. It is thus important to educate citizens about their legal rights, police procedures, and the importance of respecting not only the law but the enforcers of the law as well. In the same vein, police management should work at addressing and eradicating police involvement in criminal activities, proactively monitoring all officers’ behaviour to detect signs of excessive force, and swiftly dealing with criminal behaviour by the police.

Abstract Background Public transportation use is influenced by perceptions of safety. Concerns related to crime on New York City (NYC) transit have risen following NYC’s COVID-19 pandemic state of emergency declaration in 2020, leading to declines in subway ridership. In response, the most recent mayoral administration implemented a Subway Safety Plan in 2022. This study aimed to quantify the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic and the Subway Safety Plan on rates of complaints to and arrests by the New York City Police Department (NYPD) Transit Bureau. Methods Using publicly available data on complaints and arrests, we conducted interrupted time-series analyses using autoregressive integrated moving average models applied to monthly data for the period from September 2018 to August 2023. We estimated changes in the rates of complaints to and arrests by the NYPD Transit Bureau before and after: (1) the COVID-19 pandemic state of emergency declaration (i.e., March 2020), and (2) the announcement of the Subway Safety Plan (i.e., February 2022). We also examined trends by complaint and arrest type as well as changes in proportion of arrests by demographic and geographic groups. Results After the COVID-19 pandemic declaration, there was an 84% increase (i.e., an absolute increase of 6.07 per 1,000,000 riders, CI 1.42, 10.71) in complaints to the NYPD Transit Bureau, including a 99% increase (0.91 per 1,000,000 riders, CI 0.42, 1.41) in complaints for assault and a 125% increase in complaints for harassment (0.94 per 1,000,000 riders, CI 0.29, 1.60). Following the Subway Safety Plan there was an increase in the rate of arrests for harassment (0.004 per 1,000,000 riders, CI 0.001, 0.007), as well as decreases in the proportion of arrests for individuals racialized as White (− 0.02, CI − 0.04, − 0.01) and proportion of arrests in the borough of Manhattan (− 0.13, CI − 0.17, − 0.09). Conclusions The increased rates of complaints to the NYPD Transit Bureau following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic remained elevated following the enactment of the Subway Safety Plan. Further evaluation efforts can help identify effective means of promoting safety on public transportation.

In studying substance use disorder (SUD) and violence in severe mental illness (SMI), researchers account for presence of SUD or addictions to specific substances. However these studies fail to comprehensively capture solitary drug use versus specific combinations in a single exhaustive variable with more nuance (e.g., opioids only, alcohol only, both alcohol and opioids only, and so on). Using logistic regression to predict past-year violence, this study compared conventional SUD measurement (Model I: presence versus absence of SUD or specific SUDS) to a newer and more holistic approach (Model II: a single exhaustive variable with both solitary addictions [e.g., opioids only] and specific combinations of addictions [e.g., both opioids and alcohol only]) among 10,551 people with SMI in the National Survey of Drug Use and Health (20,015 − 2019). After adjusting for a wide variety of factors in Model II, people with (1) alcohol use disorders only were 2.24 times more likely to be violent (CI = 1.46–3.45, p <.001); (2) opioid use disorders only were 3.45 times more likely (CI-1.48-8.05, p,>01); (3) both alcohol and cocaine use disorders or cocaine only were 5.85 times more likely (CI = 2.63–13.05, p <.001); and (4) both alcohol and opioid use disorders only were 4.28 times more likely (CI = 1.34–13.71, p <.05). These more nuanced findings in Model II differed substantially from those using conventional SUD assessment in Model I, and the newer and more holistic approach can better reflect the complexity of addiction in relation to violence in SMI. Therefore studies, practices, and policies that address SUD and violence in SMI could be beneficially revisited with this greater comprehensiveness and detail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The occupational health burden and mechanisms that link gig work to health are understudied. We described injury and assault prevalence among food delivery gig workers in New York City (NYC) and assessed the effect of job dependence on injury and assault through work-related mechanisms and across transportation modes (electric bike and moped versus car). Data were collected through a 2022 survey commissioned by the NYC Department of Consumer and Worker Protection among delivery gig workers between October and December 2021 in NYC. We used modified Poisson regression models to estimate the adjusted prevalence rate ratio associations between job dependence and injury and assault. Of 1650 respondents, 66.9% reported that food delivery gig work was their main or only job (i.e., fully dependent). About 21.9% and 20.8% of respondents reported being injured and assaulted, respectively. Injury and assault were more than twice as prevalent among two-wheeled drivers, in comparison to car users. Fully dependent respondents had a 1.61 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.20, 2.16) and a 1.36 (95% CI 1.03, 1.80) times greater prevalence of injury and assault, respectively, than partially dependent respondents after adjusting for age, sex, race and ethnicity, language, employment length, transportation mode, and weekly work hours. These findings suggest that fully dependent food delivery gig workers, especially two-wheeled riders, are highly vulnerable to the negative consequences of working conditions under algorithmic management by the platforms. Improvements to food delivery gig worker health and safety are urgently needed, and company narratives surrounding worker autonomy and flexibility need to be revisited. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper explores whether the introduction of police-imposed barring notices in Western Australia (WA) is associated with changes to the number, type and location of recorded assaults. Police-imposed barring notices were introduced in WA in January 2011, and are issued in response to alcohol-related disorderly behaviours in/around licensed venues. A barring notice can exclude the recipient from one or more licensed venues for up to one year. WA Police provided unit level records of 67,750 assault incidents occurring during high-alcohol hours – 8pm to 6am on Friday and Saturday nights – between 1 July 2007 and 30 June 2020. This enabled data from before and after the introduction of barring notices to be compared. The findings identified a number of potentially positive effects of barring notices, including significant reductions (p < 0.001) in non-family assault offences marked with an alcohol flag, assault offences recorded occurring on pathways (which includes areas around licensed premises), and common assault offences marked with an alcohol flag. These categories clearly align with the intended use and effect/s of barring notices, and the findings are encouraging. The effects of other factors on offending numbers cannot be excluded, but the association between the introduction of barring notices and, in particular, a reduction in alcohol-flagged violent offending appears to support the use of barring notices in WA. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, and asexual (LGBTQA+) young people with disability are known to experience higher rates of harassment or abuse than LGBTQA+ young people without disability. This study focused on participants in Australia and identified factors associated with harassment or abuse among LGBTQA+ adolescents and young adults who reported a disability as well as associations with mental health outcomes. Analyses were conducted from a national survey that included 2,500 LGBTQA+ people who reported a disability and were aged 14 to 21 years. Measures included experiences in the past 12 months of verbal and physical harassment or abuse due to one's sexual orientation or gender identity, sexual harassment or abuse, mental health, suicidality, and sociodemographic traits. Overall, 48.4% of participants with disability reported experiencing verbal harassment or abuse, 12.4% physical harassment or abuse, and 29.7% sexual assault or harassment. In multivariable regression analyses, verbal harassment or abuse was significantly more likely among trans men, participants with an intellectual disability, and those who were "out" to most or all of their family. Physical harassment or abuse was significantly more likely among participants with a physical or sensory disability. Sexual harassment or abuse was significantly more likely among trans women and participants with a physical or sensory disability. Participants who experienced harassment or abuse were also significantly more likely to have attempted suicide in the past 12 months. These findings will assist policymakers and practitioners in identifying contexts linked to a heightened risk of abuse among LGBTQA+ young people with disability and further underscore an immediate need to address and prevent harm in this population. Background: Falls and interpersonal violence pose significant threats to older adults, leading to injuries, hospitalizations, and emergency department (ED) visits. This study investigates the demographics and injury patterns in older adults (aged 60 and above) who sought ED care due to assaults, comparing them with those who experienced falls to gain a deeper understanding of older adult abuse patterns. Method: This study utilizes data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) All Injury Program (2005–2019) to examine injuries among older adults aged 60 years and above. Participants were categorized into two groups: older adult abuse and injuries due to falls. The differences between the groups by demographics, injury locations, patterns, and temporal trends were analyzed using statistical methods accounting for the weighted stratified nature of the data. Cosinor analysis and Joinpoint regression were used for temporal analysis. Results: Over 15 years, there were an estimated 307,237 ED visits for older adult abuse and 39,477,217 for falls. Older adults experiencing abuse were younger and had lower hospital admission rates compared to fall patients. Injuries associated with abuse included contusions/abrasions, penetrating injuries, and fractures to the head/neck, fingers, toes, ribs, and lower extremities. In contrast, fall patients had higher admission rates, with more fractures, including cervical spine and hip fractures. Temporal patterns showed a higher rate of assaults during the summer, whereas abuse demonstrated bimodal peaks in the summer and fall. Conclusions: Injuries associated with abuse such as facial, upper trunk, and upper extremity fractures should raise suspicion even in the absence of severe symptoms. These findings emphasize the importance of early identification to connect older adults with support resources, as patients experiencing abuse often get discharged from the ED. IntroductionThe prevalence, pervasiveness, and minimization of sexual harassment and sexual assault (SHSA) within the Western Australian mining industry has been revealed in recent Australian reports and inquiries. However, there remains a gap in scholarship focusing on SHSA within the mining sector, specifically that engages with mining employees to understand this issue.MethodsThis study aimed to fill this gap by exploring the experiences and perspectives of Western Australian mining employees in relation to SHSA. Through qualitative research methods, stakeholders (n = 30) from various industry roles (e.g., front-line operations, administrative staff) participated in semi-structured interviews. A deductive thematic analysis was conducted to analyze the data.ResultsThe study revealed diverse perspectives of SHSA among participants, highlighting how this issue is understood, addressed, and discussed within the workplace. While some participants recognized positive shifts in workplace culture, it became apparent that additional efforts are needed to tackle the underlying and persistent factors that contribute to sexism, misogyny, and, ultimately, SHSA. Participants shared their perspectives regarding strategies and initiatives that could effectively combat SHSA within the industry.DiscussionThis study constitutes a significant contribution to the limited body of research on SHSA in the Western Australian mining sector, offering valuable insights and recommendations for future prevention initiatives.

Introduction: Isolated fractures of the cricoid cartilage are rare. They are caused by violent trauma such as road traffic accidents, sports’ accidents and also assaults.Observation: We report the case of a 39-year-old male who presented a displaced bifocal posterior fracture of the cricoid cartilage with a retropharyngeal haematoma responsible for the narrowing of the subglottic airway of around 70% following manual strangulation. He was intubated by nasofibroscopy then surgery was attempted to reduce one of the posterior fragments coupled with tracheotomy, with no success. The tracheostomy was kept in place for a total of three months and the subject was kept hospitalised for two months, due to recurring pulmonary abscesses requiring antibiotic treatment and drainage. On the last follow-up consultation, over one year after the trauma, persisted vocal weakness, exertional stridor, asymmetric positioning of the right arytenoid and laryngeal stenosis of around 15%. Discussion: We found 57 cases of cricoid fractures in the literature review. The primary manifestations of such fractures are dyspnoea, dysphonia and pain. The treatment most often consists in securing the airway by tracheostomy or intubation, however surgery can prove necessary. The main complication is laryngeal canal stenosis by granulomatous scar reaction. From a medico-legal point of view, cricoid fractures are considered by some authors as a potential indicator of homicide given the great force required to achieve this type of fracture, or at the very least, should raise suspicion of third party involvement. In the case of forensic autopsies, a meticulous examination is required given the fact that this cartilage is well sheathed inside the various surrounding structures. In forensic expertise, the potential complications and sequelae of these fractures should be taken into account. Conclusion: Fractures of the cricoid cartilage are important for both clinician and forensic physician to be aware of, because of potential complications and sequelae, and because this type of trauma should raise suspicion of third-party involvement.

BackgroundThe consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have been far-reaching, disproportionately impacting vulnerable populations. Of particular concern is the impact on individuals experiencing domestic violence (DV), an urgent public health issue. There have been numerous reports of pandemic-related surges in DV, and it has been speculated that prolonged periods of state-mandated isolation may be the source of these surges. The current study utilized publicly available records to examine fluctuations in DV coinciding with COVID-19 lockdown restrictions in a diverse metropolitan county.MethodsData were extracted from local police blotters and mapping engines in Orange County, California (United States), documenting police-reported DV assault. All incidents were coded for time to examine the time course of DV among other types of assault, allowing for a longitudinal view of incidents over a 66-week window. Changepoint analyses were used to determine whether and when DV assaults changed when mapped with coinciding tightening or loosening of restrictions county-wide. Piecewise regression analyses evaluated whether any detected fluctuations were statistically meaningful.ResultsIn Santa Ana, rates saw a small but significant spike in the week following the first major lockdown in March 2020 (b = .04, SE = .02, t = 2.37, p = .01), remaining stable at this higher level thereafter (b = -.003, SE = .003, t = -1.29, p = .20). In Anaheim, no meaningful change in DV assault rates was observed at any time interval.ConclusionResults suggest that surges in DV vary between communities and that systemic issues may set the stage for the surge of an already endemic problem.

Introduction: Healthcare workers, particularly those in the emergency department (ED), experience high rates of injuries caused by workplace violence (WPV).Objective: Our goal was to establish the incidence of WPV among multidisciplinary ED staff within a regional health system and assess its impact on staff victims.Methods: We conducted a survey study of all multidisciplinary ED staff at 18 Midwestern EDs encompassing a larger health system between November 18–December 31, 2020. We solicited the incidence of verbal abuse and physical assault experienced and witnessed by respondents over the prior six months, as well as its impact on staff.Results: We included responses from 814 staff (24.5% response rate) for final analysis with 585 (71.9%) indicating some form of violence experienced in the preceding six months. A total of 582 (71.5%) respondents indicated experiencing verbal abuse, and 251 (30.8%) indicated experiencing some form of physical assault. All disciplines experienced some type of verbal abuse and nearly all experienced some type of physical assault. One hundred thirty-five (21.9%) respondents indicated that being the victim of WPV has affected their ability to perform their job, and nearly half (47.6%) indicated it has changed the way they interact with or perceive patients. Additionally, 132 (21.3%) indicated experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress, and 18.5% reported they have considered leaving their position due to an incident.Conclusion: Emergency department staff suffer violence at a high rate, and there is no discipline that is spared. As health systems seek to prioritize staff safety in violence-prone areas such as the ED, it is imperative to recognize that the entire multidisciplinary team is impacted and requires targeted efforts for improvement in safety.

This research explores legal issues related to perpetrators of child abuse with a focus on the analysis of the decision of the Kepanjen District Court (Number: 1/Pid.Sus-Anak/2020/PN.KPn). The crime of abuse, which involves an attack on another individual with the aim of torturing or oppressing, has serious implications in criminal law and Islamic criminal law. The research uses a statutory and case approach, exploring normative and doctrinal aspects of Indonesian and Islamic law that are relevant to the case. The main data is obtained from primary legal materials such as the 1945 Constitution, Criminal Code, Law Number 11 of 2012, Law Number 35 of 2014 concerning Child Protection, as well as Islamic legal sources such as the Qur'an and Hadith and also secondary legal materials such as books, articles, journals, and other scientific works. By using deductive analysis, this research aims to provide an overview and solution to legal problems that occur, especially regarding legal protection for minors who commit persecution as a form of defense that causes the death of begal both according to criminal law and Islamic law. This study found that children who commit persecution against begal until they die, both criminal law and Islamic law both agree that minors can only be sentenced as a last resort and must still pay attention to the best interests of the child. In juvenile law, research considers psychological factors, the need for compassion, and rehabilitation efforts to achieve balanced justice. This research contributes to the understanding of criminal law and Islamic criminal law related to cases of sexual abuse, especially those involving underage offenders.

Abstract Background Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality globally. TBI is often associated with other physical or psychological issues resulting in high hospitalization costs. TBI incidence and recovery can vary with the external cause being intentional or unintentional. It is important to monitor the rates of TBI hospitalizations related to different external causes. This study examined the annual rate, comorbidity and length of stay associated with assault-related TBI hospitalizations and compare it with other external causes, by age and sex in Canada from 2010 to 2021. Methods Discharge Abstract Database was used to extract cases of TBI (2010–2021). ICD-10-CA codes were used to classify all cases with TBI as per assault and other external causes (falls; transport; sport, physical activity and recreation; struck by). Additional variables, including age, sex, comorbidity and length of stay, were examined. Time trends were quantified using Joinpoint regression. Results The average annual percent increase for all TBI hospitalizations from 2010 to 2021 was not significant at 0.1%. Females accounted for 35.8% of these TBI hospitalizations. From 2010 to 2021, assault-related TBI hospitalizations showed a significant annual decline of 4.1% for males and a significant increase of 1.2% for females. Increase in TBI hospitalizations related to falls showed an average annual percent increase of 1.4% for males and 2.2% for females. A significant decrease was observed for TBI hospitalizations related to the other three (transport, SPAR and struck by) external causes for both sexes from 2010 to 2021. Infants and children under 10 years of age had higher percentages of cases with comorbidities and higher length of stay for assault-related TBI hospitalizations. Conclusions Assault-related TBI hospitalization rates decreased overall and among males, rates among females increased from 2010 to 2021. These results underscore the importance of targeted prevention efforts for TBI related to different external causes, age and sex, and continued surveillance to monitor the epidemiology of assault-related TBI.

Background: Research has shown that potential perpetrators and individuals high in psychopathic traits tend to body language cues to target a potential new victim. However, whether targeting occurs also by tending to vocal cues has not been examined. Thus, the role of voice in interpersonal violence merits investigation.Objective: In two studies, we examined whether perpetrators could differentiate female speakers with and without sexual and physical assault histories (presented as rating the degree of ‘vulnerability’ to victimization).Methods: Two samples of male listeners (sample one N = 105, sample two, N = 109) participated. Each sample rated 18 voices (9 survivors and 9 controls). Listener sample one heard spontaneous speech, and listener sample two heard the second sentence of a standardized passage. Listeners’ self-reported psychopathic traits and history of previous perpetration were measured.Results: Across both samples, history of perpetration (but not psychopathy) predicted accuracy in distinguishing survivors of assault.Conclusions: These findings highlight the potential role of voice in prevention and intervention. Gaining a further understanding of what voice cues are associated with accuracy in discerning survivors can also help us understand whether or not specialized voice training could have a role in self-defense practices.

Discussions of robotics and the law are often limited to 'what technology harms humans', rather than considering what it means when 'humans harm technology'. This article looks to advancements of Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) technology to argue how this can be an extension of individuals and therefore causes complicated legal questions that are yet to be resolved. This article identifies the law and explains BCI technology within the context of Australian criminal, property, negligence, personal injury and civil procedure laws. These areas of law need to be read with a clearer understanding of the way that technology is advancing. Three established torts require the defendant's behavior to be "offensive" or "highly offensive" in order to be actionable: offensive battery, public disclosure of true private facts, and intrusion on seclusion. Although what links these "offensiveness" torts together has not been recognized before, this Article demonstrates that they occupy a sub-category of tort liability that is coherent, insight-generating, and useful. The torts developed at different times and in a sense for different reasons, but all three rest on the same principle: the idea that individual autonomy involves not only inviolable bodily space, but also inviolable private and informational space. What counts as actionable wrongdoing for these torts depends on the cultural context, because what is considered offensive conduct may vary, as cultural conditions change. The typical victim (or observer) of one of these torts must plausibly have the reaction "How dare you?" for the offensiveness element of the tort to be satisfied. That is what links these three superficially disparate torts together, and warrants understanding them together, as protections against invasions of the different forms of inviolable space that are a core feature of every individual's autonomy. Background: Sexual violence (SV) and intimate partner violence (IPV) experiences are major social determinants of adverse health. There is limited prevalence data on these experiences for veterans, particularly across sociodemographic groups. Objective: To estimate the prevalence of SV before, during, and after military service and lifetime and past-year IPV for women and men, and explore differences across sociodemographic groups. Design: Data are from two national cross-sectional surveys conducted in 2020. Weighted prevalence estimates of SV and IPV experiences were computed, and weighted logistic regression models were used for comparisons across gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, and age. Participants: Study 1 included veterans of all service eras (N = 1187; 50.0% women; 29% response rate). Study 2 included recently separated post-9/11 veterans (N = 1494; 55.2% women; 19.4% response rate). Main Measures: SV was assessed with the Deployment Risk and Resilience Inventory-2 (DRRI-2). IPV was assessed with the extended Hurt-Insult-Threaten-Scream Tool. Key Results: Women were more likely than men to experience pre-military SV (study 1: 39.9% vs. 8.7%, OR = 6.96, CIs: 4.71–10.28; study 2: 36.2% vs. 8.6%, OR = 6.04, CIs: 4.18–8.71), sexual harassment and/or assault during military service (study 1: 55.0% vs. 16.8%, OR = 6.30, CIs: 4.57–8.58; study 2: 52.9% vs. 26.9%, OR = 3.08, CIs: 2.38–3.98), and post-military SV (study 1: 12.4% vs. 0.9%, OR = 15.49, CIs: 6.42–36.97; study 2: 7.5% vs. 1.5%, OR = 5.20, CIs: 2.26–11.99). Women were more likely than men to experience lifetime IPV (study 1: 45.7% vs. 37.1%, OR = 1.38, CIs: 1.04–1.82; study 2: 45.4% and 34.8%, OR = 1.60, CIs: 1.25–2.04) but not past-year IPV (study 1: 27.9% vs. 28.3%, OR = 0.95, CIs: 0.70–1.28; study 2: 33.1% vs. 28.5%, OR = 1.24, CIs: 0.95–1.61). When controlling for gender, there were few differences across other sociodemographic groups, with the exception of sexual orientation. Purpose: Through its associations with mass gatherings, alcohol consumption, emotional cues, and gambling, the Super Bowl (SB) has been implicated in increased rates of interpersonal violence and assaults. This study endeavors to investigate the relationship between assault-related injuries, especially intimate partner violence (IPV) and SB. Method: A retrospective review of prospectively collected data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) spanning 2005 to 2017 was conducted. Assault-related injuries were examined in relation to (1) the 4-day Super Bowl weekend (Friday–Monday), (2) Super Bowl Sunday, and (3) the Super Bowl week (Friday–Thursday) for all years, following the loss of the projected winning team (underdog victories), and losses despite a significant point spread favoring one team (upset losses). National estimates of injuries and associated variables were derived using the SUDAAN software. Results: While there were no significant differences in the overall number of assaults or assault types during the SB weekend (5.6% vs 5.5%; p = 0.31), relative decreases were observed for altercations (21.1% vs 24.8%; p < 0.01), sexual assault (3.4% vs 4.0%; p < 0.01), and IPV (8.3% vs 12.5%; p < 0.01) on the Friday preceding SB, and robbery incidents on SB Sunday (2.1% vs 3.5%; p = 0.01). No changes in the incidence of assault-related injuries were found based on the favored or underdog status of the teams, including upset losses. Conclusion: Contrary to expectations, SB was not associated with increased assault-related injuries. Introduction: In September 2017 the Northern Territory Government of Australia introduced a banned drinker register (BDR) to mitigate the high levels of alcohol‐related harm within the Northern Territory. The current study aimed to examine the impact of the Northern Territory BDR on youth (aged <18 years) using police recorded assault data. Methods: Interrupted time‐series models were used to assess monthly trends in assaults and alcohol‐related assaults perpetration and victimisation in the regions of Greater Darwin, Alice Springs and Katherine between January 2014 and December 2019. Results: Examining the three regions combined, after the re‐introduction of the BDR a significant step decrease in police recorded youth assault perpetration (β = −1.67) and a significant step increase in police recorded youth assault victimisation (β = 1.40) was identified. However, no significant effects were identified at the individual region level. Discussion and Conclusions: Findings suggest that restricting alcohol consumption in high‐risk adults through the BDR had a limited immediate effect in police recorded youth assaults. Individual level or contextual factors may have influenced both immediate and long‐term impacts of the BDR, and as such, future policy design needs to support and empower community leaders across the policy development and implementation process. A wider evaluation of the BDR currently underway may provide additional understanding behind the mechanisms that underpin alcohol‐related harm in the Northern Territory. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Feelings of guilt often occur when people are subjected to crime. In this study, guilt is defined as a moral and emotional category, as opposed to the legal guilt. The aim of this study was to investigate how crime victims related to feelings of guilt in the court process. Interviews with plaintiffs in rape cases (10) have been compared to interviews with plaintiffs in assault (10) and fraud cases (10) in order find out if there are differences in the perceptions of guilt for each type of crime. The interviews are analysed by discursive psychology and three interpretative repertoires have been identified: self‐blaming, guilt imposed and guilt resistance. The results show that plaintiffs in rape cases expressed more feelings of being guilt‐imposed compared to plaintiffs in fraud and assault cases. Some plaintiffs in the rape cases describe how they actively opposed what they perceived was guilty‐imposed practices in court. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many crime victims do not report their victimization and rates of reporting are disparate across crime types. While research has established victims are least likely to report sexual assault, less known is whether the crime discounting process affects reporting rates and whether this process differs by crime type. This paper thus examines reporting for robbery, sexual assault, and physical assault incidents, particularly exploring victims who indicated their incident was "not a crime." Using the National Crime Victimization Survey (n = 15,012) and a series of logistic regressions, this study found that, holding a number of incident-level correlates constant, crime type was the most salient predictor of reporting to police and nonreporting because the incident was "not a crime." In casualty, Casualty Medical Officers come across a maximum number of Medico-legal cases. Any case where the doctor feels that it should be investigated by the Police or a Magistrate is considered as Medico legal case. As it is a Medico legal case, there will be an inquiry by the investigating officer and if needed an Investigating officer may require a report of that case to produce to the court. The doctor who has issued report can be called to the court to give the evidence regarding that case. Identifying the pattern of injuries, types of cases, age-wise distribution, and sex distribution of Medico-legal cases reported to the casualty department of the hospital will help administrators, social workers, NGO's, and policymakers to successfully manage and prevent such cases by devising necessary policies. A retrospective study was conducted at Employee State Insurance Corporation Medical College, Kalaburagi, Karnataka, India. All the reported cases to casualty between April 2022 and March 2023 at ESIC Medical College, Kalaburagi were analyzed. Total of 452 Medico-legal cases were analyzed which were attended in casualty in span of one year out of total 11288 Casualty cases. In that 344 were male and 108 female patients. This study investigates the pattern of hand injuries presenting to a UK regional tertiary centre. All referrals to our Hand Surgery Unit in 2019 were reviewed. Subgroup analyses of sex, deprivation, occupational injuries and assault cases were carried out. Over the study period, 4216 cases were referred. Most were male (70%), with a median age of 36 years and from a deprived area (75.2%). Soft tissue injury was documented in 53.6% and bone injury (fracture/dislocation) in 52.4%. Surgical management was required in 2214 (52.5%) cases. Work-related injuries accounted for 16.7% of cases and were more likely to require surgery. Assault-related injuries accounted for 8% of cases, with a male preponderance. Our findings can help facilitate service provision and guide regional and national prevention policies. Media consumption includes a lot of movies. Film and culture interact in complex ways. Although art is meant to challenge established structures, mainstream Bollywood's profit-driven objective sometimes requires it to fulfil specific promises to a wide audience, minimizing disruption of traditional conceptions. A recent Indian film offers promise, though not much. They dare to raise social taboos to challenge normative beliefs. Sameer Sanjay Vidwans’ Satyaprem Ki Katha and Behzad Khambata's A Thursday offer a fresh take on the topics of date rape and the failures of the system in addressing the pleas of survivors, highlighting concerns of neglect and conspiracy. This study analysed films about rape and related issues and compared them to real-life data. The study also involves an examination of how society attributes rape instances and the experiences of survivors. It asserts that the Bollywood business has just started undertaking initiatives to create a platform for discussing taboo issues that have previously been devoid of free discussion. The observation suggests that contemporary films focusing on taboo issues are grabbing larger audiences and thus achieving commercial success, in contrast to their predecessors. In September 2023, a surge of violence against healthcare professionals occurred in Nepal within a two-week span, despite recent legal amendments aimed at curbing such incidents. This manuscript explores whether stricter legislation effectively deters these acts. The violence is rooted in Nepal's healthcare system's inadequacies, leading to overcrowded and understaffed hospitals, patient frustration, and healthcare professional burnout. Misinformation and rumors, particularly in rural areas, can trigger outbreaks of violence, exacerbated by media sensationalism. The lack of legal consequences for attackers is a significant factor. Perpetrators often go unpunished, emboldening others to resort to violence when dissatisfied with medical services. Political affiliations and third-party involvement for financial gain are common. The psychological toll on healthcare workers is profound, resulting in burnout, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder, contributing to a significant brain drain of doctors from Nepal. This paper underscores the importance of enforcing existing laws to create a safe workplace and making the malpractice complaint process accessible to the public to deter resorting to violence.

A substantial minority of women who experience interpersonal violence will develop posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). One critical challenge for preventing PTSD is predicting whose acute posttraumatic stress symptoms will worsen to a clinically significant degree. This 6-month longitudinal study adopted multilevel modeling and exploratory machine learning (ML) methods to predict PTSD onset in 58 young women, ages 18 to 30, who experienced an incident of physical and/or sexual assault in the three months prior to baseline assessment. Women completed baseline assessments of theory-driven cognitive and neurobiological predictors and interview-based measures of PTSD diagnostic status and symptom severity at 1-, 3-, and 6-month follow-ups. Higher levels of self-blame, generalized anxiety disorder severity, childhood trauma exposure, and impairment across multiple domains were associated with a pattern of high and stable posttraumatic stress symptom severity over time. Predictive performance for PTSD onset was similarly strong for a gradient boosting machine learning model including all predictors and a logistic regression model including only baseline posttraumatic stress symptom severity. The present findings provide directions for future work on PTSD prediction among interpersonal violence survivors that could enhance early risk detection and potentially inform targeted prevention programs.

Workplace aggression can escalate from verbal to physical, adding risk of physical injury to negative psychological impact. Understanding escalation is necessary to develop effective violence intervention/prevention programs, but its occurrence is not well documented. An online survey determined if and how aggression escalates in occupational therapy (OT) workplaces. Because local culture can influence workplace events we compared surveys from northeastern states with the lowest rates of homicide to southeastern states with the highest. Ninety four OTs working in southeastern or northeastern states reported details of the most recent verbal and/or physical aggressive event initiated by clients (NIOSH Type 2) or staff (NIOSH Type 3) they witnessed or experienced in the workplace within the last year. Aggressor status, motivation, actions; therapist reactions, injuries and psychological sequelae were queried in logical order. Behavior inter-correlation followed by cluster analysis determined if levels of escalation could be detected. Analyses grouped events into five escalation levels in which progressively more hostile or damaging behaviors were added at each successive level. Higher levels involved known risk factors: Younger, reactively angry clients with prior aggression histories escalated attacks to involve restraint, calls for help and physical injury. Southeastern aggressor/target interactions appeared more combative, seemingly regardless of personal risk. Remarkably, northeastern OTs reported significantly more positive and fewer negative feelings across levels of escalation. OT workplace aggression occurs frequently, can escalate to injurious levels and requires prevention/intervention. BACKGROUND: Half of all reported violent incidents in health care settings occur in the emergency department (ED) placing all staff members at risk. However, research typically does not include all ED work groups or validated measures beyond nurses and physicians. OBJECTIVE: The aims of this study were to (a) validate an established instrument measuring perceptions of causes of violence and attitudes toward managing violence within an inclusive workforce sample; and (b) explore variation in perceptions, attitudes, and incidence of violence and safety to inform a violence prevention program. METHODS: This is an investigator-initiated single-site cross-sectional survey design assessing the psychometric properties of the Management of Aggression and Violence Attitude Scale (MAVAS) within a convenience sample (n = 134). Construct validity was assessed using exploratory factor analysis and reliability was evaluated by the Cronbach's α estimation. Descriptive, correlational, and inferential estimates explored differences in perceptions, attitudes, and incidence of violence and safety. RESULTS: Exploratory factor analysis indicated validity of the MAVAS with a seven-factor model. Its internal consistency was satisfactory overall (Cronbach's α= 0.87) and across all subscales (Cronbach's α values = 0.52–0.80). Significant variation in incidence of physical assault, perceptions of safety, and causes of violence was found between work groups. CONCLUSIONS: The MAVAS is a valid and reliable tool to measure ED staff members' perceptions of causes of violence and attitudes toward managing violence. We sought to determine whether or not there were differences in medical, criminological and legal factors between older and younger offenders with diagnoses of delusional jealousy by undertaking a retrospective case-file search of Australian legal databases. Our results demonstrate that older offenders were more likely to have comorbid dementia whereas younger offenders were more likely to have comorbid substance use and chronic psychotic conditions. A history of domestic violence frequently predated the index offence but we were unable to determine if this was due to psychosis or a pre-existing tendency for violence. Despite a common diagnosis, the older offenders were more likely to be made forensic patients rather than sentenced prisoners when compared with the younger offenders. Consequently, different factors might mediate the pathway to violence in older and younger people suffering from delusional jealousy and could be additional targets for clinical intervention.
