Abstract

The competitive advantage of aspect oriented programming (AOP) is that it improves the maintainability and understandability of software systems by modularizing crosscutting concerns. However, some concerns, such as logging or debugging, may be overlooked and should be entangled and distributed across the code base. AOP is a software development paradigm that enables developers to capture crosscutting concerns in split-aspect modes. Additionally, it is a novel notion that has the potential to improve the quality of software programs by removing the complexity involved with the production of code tangles via the usage of separation of concerns. As a result, it provides more modularity. Throughout its early development, some believed that AOP was easier to build and maintain than other implementations since it was based on an existing one. The statements are predicated on the premise that local improvements are easier to implement. Additionally, without appropriate visualization tools for both static and dynamic structures, cross-cutting challenges may be difficult for developers and researchers to appreciate. In recent years, AspectJ has begun to enable the depiction of crosscutting concerns via the release of IDE plugins. This article explains aspect oriented programming and how it may be used to improve the readability and maintainability of software projects. Additionally, it will evaluate the challenges it presents to application developers and academics.

Abstract

With the advent of multicore processors, there is an increasing amount of interest in building concurrent applications capable of fully utilising their features. Developing applications for these platforms to take full advantage of the power of multicore capabilities remains a complex, error-prone, and challenging endeavour. Unfortunately, concurrency is not uniformly and externally expressed in most existing application models. The result is that concurrency and thread management are hidden within objects or components and intermixed with their functionalities. After demonstrating the tangling of code that results from the interaction of these two major concerns, this thesis describes a method of improving the concurrent program by applying a novel technique to separate the concerns: aspect-oriented programming, which aims to encapsulate concerns that crosscut the main program flow in separate entities into aspects. The most mature aspect-oriented tool available at the time this project was being undertaken is AspectJ, which is an extension of Java. AspectJ can be used to write an aspect to a separate concern in a sequential program to avoid code tangling, but it is often inapplicable for concurrent programs. The problem lies in the fact that the points where parallelisation should occur are not natural join points in AspectJ (i.e. points where AspectJ can intervene). Consequently, this thesis proposes a set of fine-grained join points capable of completely handling concurrent programs. This model goes beyond present AspectJ models and demonstrates the need to recognise complex behaviour for an effective separation of concerns. Finally, aspects for implementing concurrent programs according to different schemes are presented, together with evaluation results. This highlights the flexibility of aspects for implementing concurrent programs, a flexibility which is always a cross-cutting concern with respect to the main concern of base applications.

7. A semantics for aspects by compositional translation

Abstract

We analyse the semantics of aspect-oriented extensions to functional languages by presenting compositional translations of these primitives into languages with traditional notions of state and control. As a first step, we examine an existing semantic description of aspects which allows the labelling of program points. We show that a restriction of these semantics to aspects which do not preempt the execution of code can be fully abstractly translated into a functional calculus with higher order references, but that removing this restriction requires a notion of exception handling to be added to the target language in order to yield a sound semantics. Next, we proceed to show that abandoning the labelling technique, and consequently relaxing the so-called ``obliviousness'' property of aspectual languages, allows preemptive aspects to be included in the general references model without the need for exceptions. This means that the game model of general references is inherited by the aspect calculus. The net result is a clean semantic description of aspect-orientation, which mirrors recently published techniques for their implementation, and thereby provides theoretical justification for these systems. The practical validity of our semantics is demonstrated by implementing extensions to the basic calculus in Standard ML, and showing how a number of useful aspect-oriented features can be expressed using general references alone. Our theoretical methodology closely follows the proof structure that often appears in the game semantics literature, and therefore provides an operational perspective on notions such as ``bad variables'' and factorisation theorems.

Abstract

Innovative paradigm of reversible computing (RC) is on the focus of current computer science. The main idea of it is to enable the execution of programs not forward only (as it is now) but backwards as well. The set of possible applications of RC includes software debugging, faulttolerance increasing and quantum computing. In order to do reversible computing operational there is a need to code (manually) or to generate opposite "reverse" element for each "forward" element. However, this emerging paradigm still needs the methods for expressing opposite language elements in advance (during design-time). On the other hand, classic Aspect oriented paradigm (AOP) helps to deal with crosscutting concerns such as security, transactions etc. at design time, allows to separate development tasks by proficiency instead of by modules and to run weaved program at run-time. Abstract

Software testing is an important means to ensure the quality of software. However, there is a lack of effective modeling and optimization of CPS software testing. In this paper, Petri nets are used to model the underlying devices, components, connectors and test cases of CPS software. Aspect oriented programming extracts the crosscutting concerns of CPS software testing. The behaviors and their relationships are described based on AOP, and a weaving mechanism is used to dynamically integrate these models into the test model of CPS. The correctness of the model is analyzed by using the operation semantics and related theories of Petri nets. Based on the state space of constructed model, a strategy is proposed to dynamically select the test suite. Abstract

Throughout the lifecycle of software products, changes arise. The repercussions of these changes increase in more advanced stages of the development process. The aspect-oriented proposal is a software development paradigm that provides principles to manage changes. However, the current proposals for the development of the early stages of software do not provide an effective means for functional changes and updates. This paper presents a knowledge modeling methodology in the aspect-oriented context focused on the early stages of the software development. This methodology aims to ease the software evolution through a standardized knowledge representation, a multidimensional organization, and an appropriate advanced separation of concerns. The proposal of a conceptual modeling of early-aspect provides the means for an organization of multidimensional knowledge. The use of ontological techniques under the principles of knowledge-engineering allows specification of early knowledge. This paper presents a case study developed using the methodology and is used as a base to evaluate the methodology, comparing the efficiency in the changes against classic approaches. Abstract

Software testing is one of the most important process in the software development life cycle, since it ensures the delivery of good quality software to the user. In order to make this process more efficient, automated testing is required. Automated testing offers the advantages of reduced cost and time and it is also more reliable than manual means. In automated testing, test oracle process is required to test software applications. The software applications developed using aspect oriented programming paradigm can also be tested using automated testing. Aspect oriented programming offers the advantages over object oriented programming paradigm by centralizing various cross cutting concerns in a software code, thereby improving the modularity of the code. Since the crosscutting concern is separated into a single module, maintenance of such systems becomes easy. Abstract

Industrial companies evolve in a highly competitive environment, their performance depends on their time to market as well as the quality of their products. This situation calls for a delicate optimization of supply chain and manufacturing processes, as a guarantee of the quality of the final system. Due to the fact that these processes are heterogeneous and poly-disciplinary, there is an urgent need for a general consistent model for all systems engineering concepts. Such model has to achieve an equilibrium between covering all key concepts of systems engineering processes and providing a rich language to express the details of these concepts. In this paper, we propose a solution to this problem through defining and validating a system process engineering metamodel inspired from research advances on Software Process Engineering Metamodel and System Modeling Language. The scope of this solution exceeds the definition and description of processes by providing an orchestration mechanism based on aspect oriented programming, in order to animate the execution control and monitoring through non intrusive mechanisms. 46. ALTA: Automatic Load-Time Adaptation Technique for Refactoring-Based Evolution of Software Component.

Abstract

Evolution of software components may lead to compatibility problems. State-of-the-art fully-automatic compatibility solutions either require source code, or they fail to support refactorings that may lead to conflict method signatures, such as changing the order of same-typed parameters or changing return types. Moreover, all of them will statically modify source or binary files, which may violate the license agreements of components. In this paper, we propose ALTA, a fully-automatic adaptation technique for refactoring-based evolution of software component. ALTA supports refactorings that may lead to conflict method signatures. In addition, ALTA can perform load-time adaptation, and therefore it can work under all kinds of license agreements. We also present ALTA*, an implementation of ALTA by Java and AspectJ. The evaluation results show that ALTA* effectively solves compatibility problems in real-world components with a performance overhead of load-time adaptation feature (if enabled) at around 11%. Abstract

In this paper, we describe COCA -- Computation Offload to Clouds using AOP (aspect-oriented programming). COCA is a programming framework that allows smart phones application developers to offload part of the computation to servers in the cloud easily. COCA works at the source level. By harnessing the power of AOP, \name inserts appropriate offloading code into the source code of the target application based on the result of static and dynamic profiling. As a proof of concept, we integrate \name into the Android development environment and fully automate the new build process, making application programming and software maintenance easier. With COCA, mobile applications can now automatically offload part of the computation to the cloud, achieving better performance and longer battery life. Smart phones such as iPhone and Android phones can now easily leverage the immense computing power of the cloud to achieve tasks that were considered difficult before, such as having a more complicated artificial-intelligence engine. Aspect Oriented Programming (AOP) introduces new types of coupling among the aspects and the components of the base system. Indeed, several and different new kinds of interactions among aspects and the other components can be introduced by the AOP constructs, allowing the alteration both of the structure, control and data flow of the components of the base system. These interactions can make higher the complexity of the overall system affecting its comprehension. Abstract

Modern software systems are challenging challenge software engineers since they must adapt effectively and efficiently with respect to the environment in which they are deployed. To this end, the paper outlines an architecture, supported by special-purpose languages and aspect oriented techniques, for the design of component-based of distributed self-adaptive systems. Software artifacts are dynamically grouped, and constantly supervised by a network of ad-hoc components. The supervision mechanism exploits special-purpose languages that define data collection, correlation, aggregation, and analysis, to reason on properties defined at different levels of pervasiveness (from component-wide to system-wide). Its goal is to identify situations that trigger adaptations. Our approach is characterized by a decentralized architecture in which there is no single point of failure or bottleneck, and a clear separation of concerns between business logic and adaptation mechanisms. Abstract

Privacy is becoming a key requirement for ICT applications that handle personal data. However, Database Management Systems (DBMSs), which are devoted to data collection and processing by definition, still do not provide the proper support for privacy policies. Policies are enforced by ad-hoc programmed software modules that complement DBMS access control services. This practice is time consuming, error prone, and neither general nor scalable. This work does a first step to overcome these limits. We propose a systematic approach to the automatic development of a monitor that regulates the execution of SQL queries based on purpose based privacy policies.
