Nature has evolved over millions of years to develop advanced biological machines which cooperatively perform a myriad of complex operations in 'one pot' with unparalleled efficiency. Using chemical fuels such as adenosine triphosphate to power endergonic reactions, Nature can selectively control reagents to achieve directional motion and even pumping of key intermediates along metabolic pathways. Being able to mimic this level of molecular precision would prove to be an extremely powerful technique across multiple disciplines of science. Whether within construction materials, surface chemistry or advanced drug delivery, properties on the nanoscale have huge implications on the macroscale. Herein, a series of artificial molecular machines are described which utilise stimuli to afford directional motion on the molecular scale to perform a range of desirable applications.
