In everyday life, people need to respond appropriately to many types of emotional stimuli. Here, we investigate whether human occipital-temporal cortex (OTC) shows co-representation of the semantic category and affective content of visual stimuli. We also explore whether OTC transformation of semantic and affective features extracts information of value for guiding behavior. Participants viewed 1620 emotional natural images while functional magnetic resonance imaging data were acquired. Using voxel-wise modeling we show widespread tuning to semantic and affective image features across OTC. The top three principal components underlying OTC voxel-wise responses to image features encoded stimulus animacy, stimulus arousal and interactions of animacy with stimulus valence and arousal. At low to moderate dimensionality, OTC tuning patterns predicted behavioral responses linked to each image better than regressors directly based on image features. This is consistent with OTC representing stimulus semantic category and affective content in a manner suited to guiding behavior.

In this issue of Cell, Zhang et al. describe populations of spinal projecting neurons in the rostral ventromedial medulla (rVMM) that harmonize somatic motor function and sympathetic activation. The coordinated regulation plays a vital role in supporting behaviors associated with various arousal states.

This paper describes the SocialVidStim-a database of video stimuli available to the scientific community depicting positive and negative social evaluative and neutral statements. The SocialVidStim comprises 53 diverse individuals reflecting the demographic makeup of the USA, ranging from 9 to 41 years old, saying 20-60 positive and 20-60 negative social evaluative statements (e.g. 'You are a very trustworthy/annoying person'), and 20-60 neutral statements (e.g. 'The sky is blue'), totaling 5793 videos post-production. The SocialVidStim are designed for use in behavioral and functional magetic resonance imaging paradigms, across developmental stages, in diverse populations. This study describes stimuli development and reports initial validity and reliability data on a subset videos (N = 1890) depicting individuals aged 18-41 years. Raters perceive videos as expected: positive videos elicit positively valenced ratings, negative videos elicit negatively valenced ratings and neutral videos are rated as neutral. Test-retest reliability data demonstrate intraclass correlations in the good-to-excellent range for negative and positive videos and the moderate range for neutral videos. We also report small effects on valence and arousal that should be considered during stimuli selection, including match between rater and actor sex and actor believability. The SocialVidStim is a resource for researchers and we offer suggestions for using the SocialVidStim in future research.

It is mostly described as an alarm signal but is also discussed to signal dominance or mating quality. To clarify the function of drumming in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus), we compared the occurrence of drumming during predator, opposite-sex and same-sex encounters. We tested 48 captive Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) in three experiments. In predator experiments, subjects were exposed alone or with their cagemate to aerial and terrestrial predator dummies. In social encounter experiments, familiar and unfamiliar male–female dyads and same-sex dyads were confronted. For the same-sex encounters, a dominance index was calculated for each subject based on the number of won and lost conflicts. Drumming and drumming-call combinations were counted, and a multi-parametric sound analysis was performed. In all experiments drumming and drumming-call combinations occurred. In predator experiments, more subjects drummed when confronted with the predator stimulus than in the habituation phase. Introduction: While abnormal responses to threat, including overgeneralization to conditioned fear, have been postulated to play a critical role in pathological anxiety, the relevance of previous findings to social anxiety disorder (SAD) is unclear. We investigated conditioned and generalized fear responses in patients with SAD using socially relevant stimuli. Methods: A total of 26 patients with SAD and 25 healthy controls participated in a fear conditioning and generalization paradigm consisting of two neutral faces as conditioned stimuli (CS+ or CS-) and an angry face with contemptuous comments as unconditioned stimuli. Eight morphed faces of two conditioned stimuli in each continuum were given to test generalization. Behavioral data and physiological responses were acquired. Results: Successful conditioning was observed in the risk ratings for both groups, while only a marginal indication of conditioning was noted in physiological measures. During the generalization phase, patients rated the risk higher than CS-when the stimuli close to CS- contained a portion of CS+ features. Larger skin conductance responses to this stimulus were linked to higher fear of negative evaluation. In addition, patients spent a longer time evaluating safe and ambiguous stimuli than healthy controls and exhibited consistently high levels of subjective arousal. Discussion: Taken together, our findings suggest that SAD patients may exhibit a tendency towards overgeneralization of fear responses and show distinct patterns in processing generalized threat stimuli compared to healthy controls. Even though overgeneralization was not evident in physiological measures, it is necessary to consider this behavioral characteristic in the clinical management of patients with SAD. Fear‐related psychopathologies, such as post‐traumatic stress disorder, are linked to dysfunction in neural circuits that govern fear memory and arousal. The lateral hypothalamus (LH) and zona incerta (ZI) regulate fear, but our understanding of the precise neural circuits and cell types involved remains limited. Here, we examined the role of relaxin family peptide receptor 3 (RXFP3) expressing cells in the LH/ZI in conditioned fear expression and general arousal in male RXFP3‐Cre mice. We found that LH/ZI RXFP3+ (LH/ZIRXFP3) cells projected strongly to fear learning, stress, and arousal centres, notably, the periaqueductal grey, lateral habenula, and nucleus reuniens. These cells do not express hypocretin/orexin or melanin‐concentrating hormone but display putative efferent connectivity with LH hypocretin/orexin+ neurons and dopaminergic A13 cells. Following Pavlovian fear conditioning, chemogenetically activating LH/ZIRXFP3 cells reduced fear expression (freezing) overall but also induced jumping behaviour and increased locomotor activity. Therefore, the decreased freezing was more likely to reflect enhanced arousal rather than reduced fear. Indeed, stimulating these cells produced distinct patterns of coactivation between several motor, stress, and arousal regions, as measured by Fos expression. These results suggest that activating LH/ZIRXFP3 cells generates brain‐wide activation patterns that augment behavioural arousal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Driver Monitoring Systems (DMSs) play a key role in preventing hazardous events (e.g., road accidents) by providing prompt assistance when anomalies are detected while driving. Different factors, such as traffic and road conditions, might alter the psycho-physiological status of a driver by increasing stress and workload levels. This motivates the development of advanced monitoring architectures taking into account psycho-physiological aspects. In this work, we propose a novel in-vehicle Internet of Things (IoT)-oriented monitoring system to assess the stress status of the driver. In detail, the system leverages heterogeneous components and techniques to collect driver (and, possibly, vehicle) data, aiming at estimating the driver's arousal level, i.e., their psycho-physiological response to driving tasks. In particular, a wearable sensorized bodice and a thermal camera are employed to extract physiological parameters of interest (namely, the heart rate and skin temperature of the subject), which are processed and analyzed with innovative algorithms. The aim of our experiment was to analyse the effect of the emotional valence (positive, negative, or neutral) on true and false recognition, matching the arousal, frequency, concreteness, and associative strength of the study and recognition words. Fifty younger adults and 46 healthy older adults performed three study tasks (with words of different valence: positive, negative, neutral) and their corresponding recognition tests. Two weeks later, they performed the three recognition tests again. The results show that words with a negative valence produced less true recognition and less false recognition than words with a positive or neutral valence, in both younger and older adults, on the immediate recognition test. This pattern of results was also found in the younger adults on the delayed recognition test, whereas in the older participants, these differences disappeared. Thus, when arousal is controlled, both younger and older adults tend to recognise negative information worse than positive or neutral information, but they also commit fewer errors. Results would suggest that the greater arousal commonly associated with negative stimuli, rather than their own valence, could explain some of the contradictory results found in the literature. This study explores the impact of destination brand experience and perceptions of safety on revisit intention, and the mediating effect of arousal and memorable tourism experience (MTE). A sample of 357 tourists participating in a Gyeongbok palace night tour in South Korea was surveyed. The findings of structural equation modeling revealed that affective experience dominated the relationships with arousal, followed by behavioral and sensory experience. Perceptions of safety had positive and significant relationships with arousal and revisit intention. The links between arousal, MTE, and revisit intention were also confirmed. The study's results emphasize that in night tourism destination brand experience and perceptions of safety are the major factors influencing revisit intention through arousal and MTE. Across sensory systems, several stimulus collative characteristics, including intensity, novelty, complexity and perceived dangerousness, are known to elicit high levels of physiological and psychological arousal. It has become apparent that food rejections by both children and adults are frequently linked to such arousal-inducing characteristics. This paper examines how arousal and arousability are important elements in responding to stimuli generally, but specifically to foods, ultimately influencing food preferences and choices. It is clear that responses to sensory properties are subject not just to variations in perceptual sensitivity due to genetics or experience—as in the case of widely rejected qualities such as bitterness or pungency—but also to the arousal potential of those stimuli. Moreover, this is linked to various enduring aspects of personality, suggesting that the impact of arousal on food choices is merely one aspect of a more general sensory sensitivity. The impact of diet on various health outcomes underlines the importance of understanding the relationship of arousal to food choices. Introduction: This study aimed to explore the arousal and valence that people experience in response to Hangul phonemes based on the gender of an AI speaker through comparison with Korean and Chinese cultures. Methods: To achieve this, 42 Hangul phonemes were used, in a combination of three Korean vowels and 14 Korean consonants, to explore cultural differences in arousal, valence, and the six foundational emotions based on the gender of an AI speaker. A total 136 Korean and Chinese women were recruited and randomly assigned to one of two conditions based on voice gender (man or woman). Results and discussion: This study revealed significant differences in arousal levels between Korean and Chinese women when exposed to male voices. Specifically, Chinese women exhibited clear differences in emotional perceptions of male and female voices in response to voiced consonants. These results confirm that arousal and valence may differ with articulation types and vowels due to cultural differences and that voice gender can affect perceived emotions. This intensive longitudinal study examined Finnish technical university teachers’ (N = 22) self-reported emotions and electrodermal activity during teaching-related events (teaching, tutoring, planning, assessing). Emotions were examined in the context of control-value theory (Pekrun, R. 2006. “The Control-Value Theory of Achievement Emotions: Assumptions, Corollaries and Implications for Educational Research and Practice.” Educational Psychology Review 18 (4): 315–41. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10648-006-9029-9). An experience sampling method with event-contingent sampling was applied via a smartphone application for a measurement period of two weeks. Participants were also equipped with a smart ring biosensor that recorded their electrodermal activity (EDA, an indicator of physiological arousal). Results indicated that teaching-related events led to predominantly positive prospective and retrospective emotions. Interactive events, such as teaching and tutoring, were especially effective in generating positive outcomes and activating emotions. Results showed that that teaching-related events had higher EDA levels than typical work hours. In addition, higher within-teacher EDA levels during teaching-related events slightly increased the likelihood of reporting positive emotional valence after teaching. Further, results indicated that teacher-student interaction (teaching and tutoring events) and higher EDA during, and emotional activity before, teaching-related events increased the likelihood of activating emotions after teaching. To support investigation of the etiology and psychophysiology of medical traumatic stress, we developed a standardized set of emotionally-salient medical images, called the 'MEDical Image Collection' (MEDIC), for use in neuroimaging or psychological research. This study aimed to establish internal consistency, test re-test reliability, and congruent validity of the image set. A representative sample of 300 adults in the United States were recruited via research recruitment platform, Prolific. Participants rated 124 images depicting medical stimuli on one of two dimensions: emotional arousal (i.e., how strongly an evoked emotion is felt) or affective valence (i.e., how positive or negative the evoked emotion is). Sociodemographic and health-related characteristics, including experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic, were also assessed. To assess test re-test reliability, a subset (n = 200) rated the images on the same dimension a second time, 3 months later. The MEDIC image set was found to: (a) elicit a range of emotional arousal and valence ratings, (b) have excellent inter-rater reliability, (c) moderate test-retest reliability, and (d) good face validity. Results indicate the new MEDIC 124-image set is a reliable and valid instrument, enabling researchers to provide context-specific and emotionally-salient stimuli to individuals when studying affective responses in relation to health and medicine. • MEDIC is a newly developed image set (124 images) of medical stimuli for research into medical traumatic stress and anxiety. • MEDIC elicited a wide range of emotional arousal and valence ratings in a sample of 300 adults. • The MEDIC image set was found to have excellent inter-rater reliability and moderate test-retest reliability. • We demonstrated the sensitivity of the MEDIC image set to medical experiences. • MEDIC can be accessed for use by contacting the study team. The phenomenon of aesthetic chills—shivers and goosebumps associated with either rewarding or threatening stimuli—offers a unique window into the brain basis of conscious reward because of their universal nature and simultaneous subjective and physical counterparts. Elucidating the neural mechanisms underlying aesthetic chills can reveal fundamental insights about emotion, consciousness, and the embodied mind. What is the precise timing and mechanism of bodily feedback in emotional experience? How are conscious feelings and motivations generated from interoceptive predictions? What is the role of uncertainty and precision signaling in shaping emotions? How does the brain distinguish and balance processing of rewards versus threats? We review neuroimaging evidence and highlight key questions for understanding how bodily sensations shape conscious feelings. This research stands to advance models of brain-body interactions shaping affect and may lead to novel nonpharmacological interventions for disorders of motivation and pleasure. Summary: Light can influence many psychophysiological functions beyond vision, including alertness, circadian rhythm, and sleep, namely the non‐image forming (NIF) effects of light. Melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance (mel‐EDI) is currently recommended as the predictor of the NIF effects of light. Although light dose is also critical for entraining and regulating circadian cycle, it is still unknown whether relatively low mel‐EDI light exposure for prolonged duration in the evening would affect pre‐sleep arousal and subsequent sleep. In all, 18 healthy college students (10 females, mean [standard deviation] age 21.67 [2.03] years) underwent 2 experimental nights with a 1 week interval in a simulated bedroom environment. During experimental nights, participants were either exposed to high or low mel‐EDI light (73 versus 38 lx mel‐EDI, 90 versus 87 photopic lx at eye level, 150 photopic lx at table level) for 3.5 h before regular bedtime, and their sleep was monitored by polysomnography. Subjective sleepiness, mood, and resting‐state electroencephalography during light exposure were also investigated. Results showed no significant differences in sleep structure and sleep quality between the two light conditions, whereas 3.5 h of exposure to high versus low mel‐EDI light induced marginally higher physiological arousal in terms of a lower delta but higher beta power density before sleep, as well as a lower delta power density during sleep. Moreover, participants felt happier before sleep under exposure to high versus low mel‐EDI light. These findings together with the current literature suggest that evening prolonged relatively low mel‐EDI light exposure may mildly increase arousal before and during sleep but affected sleep structure less. Emotion is a fundamental aspect of human life and therefore is critically encoded in language. To facilitate research into the encoding of emotion in language and how emotion associations affect language processing, we present a new set of emotion norms for over 24,000 Dutch words. The emotion norms include ratings of two key dimensions of emotion: valence and arousal, as well as ratings on discrete emotion categories: happiness, anger, fear, sadness, disgust, and surprise. We show that emotional information can predict word processing, such that responses to positive words are facilitated in contrast to neutral and negative words. We also demonstrate how the ratings of emotion are related to personality characteristics. A comprehensive examination of psyching-up strategies before maximal psychingforce production is imperative to examine the efficacy of psyching-up, identify beneficial strategies for practitioners, and direct future investigations. The aim of this systematic review was to examine the efficacy of self-psyching-up strategies on maximal force production. The systematic review followed PRISMA guidelines. A systematic search was conducted SPORTDiscus, PsychINFO, PsychARTICLES, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and Web of Science. Studies were included if they used an experipsychingmental design, sampled adults, the independent variable included a psyching-up strategy that matched the prepaworking definition, and measured maximal force production measure. Twenty-seven independent studies met the inclusion criteria for this psyreview. Collectively, 65% of the trials found that psyching-up facilitates maximal force production. Free-choice psyching-up, motivational self-talk, PETTLEP imagery, and prescribed preparatory arousal consistently enhanced performance. There was also evidence that disparity in the results may be because of the competitive experience of the participants and the type of control condition. The findings suggest that free-choice psyching-up, motivational self-talk, PETTLEP imagery, and prescribed preparatory arousal may enhance maximal force production. Future research should recruit experienced athletes to identify and test the efficacy of strategies used by applied practitioners. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the morphology of the functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) response to speech sounds measured from 16 sleeping infants and how it changes with repeated stimulus presentation. We observed a positive peak followed by a wide negative trough, with the latter being most evident in early epochs. We argue that the overall response morphology captures the effects of two simultaneous, but independent, response mechanisms that are both activated at the stimulus onset: one being the obligatory response to a sound stimulus by the auditory system, and the other being a neural suppression effect induced by the arousal system. Because the two effects behave differently with repeated epochs, it is possible to mathematically separate them and use fNIRS to study factors that affect the development and activation of the arousal system in infants. The results also imply that standard fNIRS analysis techniques need to be adjusted to take into account the possibilities of multiple simultaneous brain systems being activated and that the response to a stimulus is not necessarily stationary. Music training has beneficial effects on the development of various skills in children, whether it is receptive (listening to music) or active (producing music). Although it is known that emotional items are better remembered than neutral ones, this phenomenon remains poorly understood in preschoolers. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of music training on the emotional memory of 4- and 5-year-old preschool children. One hundred and forty-eight preschool children from two private kindergartens in Buenos Aires, Argentina, were randomly divided into groups to receive either active or receptive music training. The content was adapted from the educational music curriculum or regular music classes over a period of 4 weeks. Next, they observed 24 neutral and emotional pictures, rated their valence and arousal, and their recall and recognition (immediate and deferred) were assessed. The data was analyzed using a repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). The between factors were conditions (control versus active versus receptive) and age (4 and 5), while picture (neutral, positive, or negative) was the repeated measure. The primary findings indicated that children exposed to music training had better mnemonic performance than the control group and they remembered more emotional than neutral images. Summary Sleepwalking and related parasomnias are thought to result from incomplete awakenings out of non‐rapid eye movement (non‐REM) sleep. Non‐REM parasomnia behaviours have been described as unconscious and automatic, or related to vivid, dream‐like conscious experiences. Similarly, some observations have suggested that patients are unresponsive during episodes, while others that they can interact with their surroundings. To better grasp and characterise the full spectrum of consciousness and environmental (dis)connection associated with behavioural episodes, 35 adult patients with non‐REM sleep parasomnias were interviewed in‐depth about their experiences. The level of consciousness during parasomnia episodes was reported to be variable both within and between individuals, ranging from minimal or absent consciousness and largely automatic behaviours (frequently/always present in 36% of patients) to preserved conscious experiences characterised by delusional thinking to varying degrees of specificity (65%), often about impending danger, variably formed, uni‐ or multisensory hallucinations (53%), impaired insight (77%), negative emotions (75%), and variable, but often pronounced, amnesia (30%). Patients described their experiences as a dream scene during which they felt awake (“awake dreaming”). The surroundings were either realistically perceived, misinterpreted (in the form of perceptual illusions or misidentifications of people), or entirely hallucinated as a function of the prevailing delusion. These observations suggest that the level of consciousness, amnesia and sensory disconnection during non‐REM parasomnia episodes is variable and graded. In their full‐fledged expression, non‐REM parasomnia experiences feature several core features of dreams. Pramipexole, a D2/D3 dopamine receptor agonist, is used to treat the motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease, caused by degeneration of the dopaminergic nigrostriatal pathway. There are three paradoxes associated with its mode of action. Firstly, stimulation of D2/D3 receptors leads to neuronal inhibition, although pramipexole does not inhibit but promotes some dopamine-modulated functions, such as locomotion and reinforcement. Secondly, another dopamine-modulated function, arousal, is not promoted but inhibited by pramipexole, leading to sedation. Thirdly, pramipexole-evoked sedation is associated with an increase in pupil diameter, although sedation is expected to cause pupil constriction. To resolve these paradoxes, the path from stimulation of D2/D3 receptors to the modification of dopamine-modulated functions has been tracked. The functions considered are modulated by midbrain dopaminergic nuclei: locomotion – substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc), reinforcement/motivation – ventral tegmental area (VTA), sympathetic activity (as reflected in pupil function) – VTA; arousal – ventral periaqueductal grey (vPAG), with contributions from VTA and SNc. The application of genetics-based molecular techniques (optogenetics and chemogenetics) has enabled tracing the chains of neurones from the dopaminergic nuclei to their final targets executing the functions. The functional neuronal circuits linked to the D2/D3 receptors in the dorsal and ventral striata, stimulated by inputs from SNc and VTA, respectively, may explain how neuronal inhibition induced by pramipexole is translated into the promotion of locomotion, reinforcement/motivation and sympathetic activity. As the vPAG may increase arousal mainly by stimulating cortical D1 dopamine receptors, pramipexole would stimulate only presynaptic D2/D3 receptors on vPAG neurones, curtailing their activity and leading to sedation. Applications of 360 videos for brand storytelling and customer engagement are growing due to their immersive nature and novel sensory experiences, particularly when discovered through social media. These innovative digital media facilitate compelling experiences impacted by a user's interaction with the medium and device, subsequently shaping how 360 videos achieve brand engagement. However, existing branding research ignores the user's subjective experience of the device, does not consider how they assess the 360 brand video's creativity, and typically examines brand outcomes that are not focal to brand managers for such a communication tool. To address these gaps, mediation analysis is undertaken for two distinct 360 brand videos experienced through a PC, Tablet, or VR device, incorporating psycho-physiological affective measures (arousal and pleasure). Findings highlight to brand managers the necessity to empirically assess the subjective experience a user has with the device and its influence on presence within the 360 video. Virtual reality (VR) can enhance a tourist's travel experience and the effectiveness of destination marketing. Drawing on cognitive appraisal theory, this study developed a theoretical framework that examined VR tourism interaction, immersion, sense of presence in relation to pleasure and arousal, and the effect of these emotional responses on behavioral intention. Our results showed that VR interactivity, immersion, and sense of presence influence users' emotional responses, however, the interactive experience has no positive effect on arousal, and arousal has no positive effect on behavioral intention. Human emotions fluctuate over time. However, it is unclear how these shifting emotional states influence the organization of episodic memory. Here, we examine how emotion dynamics transform experiences into memorable events. Using custom musical pieces and a dynamic emotion-tracking tool to elicit and measure temporal fluctuations in felt valence and arousal, our results demonstrate that memory is organized around emotional states. While listening to music, fluctuations between different emotional valences bias temporal encoding process toward memory integration or separation. Whereas a large absolute or negative shift in valence helps segment memories into episodes, a positive emotional shift binds sequential representations together. Both discrete and dynamic shifts in music-evoked valence and arousal also enhance delayed item and temporal source memory for concurrent neutral items, signaling the beginning of new emotional events. These findings are in line with the idea that the rise and fall of emotions can sculpt unfolding experiences into memories of meaningful events.

Circadian clocks generate rhythms of arousal, but the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms remain unclear. In Drosophila, the clock output molecule WIDE AWAKE (WAKE) labels rhythmic neural networks and cyclically regulates sleep and arousal. Here, we show, in a male mouse model, that mWAKE/ANKFN1 labels a subpopulation of dorsomedial hypothalamus (DMH) neurons involved in rhythmic arousal and acts in the DMH to reduce arousal at night. In vivo Ca2+ imaging reveals elevated DMHmWAKE activity during wakefulness and rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, while patch-clamp recordings show that DMHmWAKE neurons fire more frequently at night. Chemogenetic manipulations demonstrate that DMHmWAKE neurons are necessary and sufficient for arousal. Single-cell profiling coupled with optogenetic activation experiments suggest that GABAergic DMHmWAKE neurons promote arousal. Surprisingly, our data suggest that mWAKE acts as a clock-dependent brake on arousal during the night, when mice are normally active. mWAKE levels peak at night under clock control, and loss of mWAKE leads to hyperarousal and greater DMHmWAKE neuronal excitability specifically at night. These results suggest that the clock does not solely promote arousal during an animals active period, but instead uses opposing processes to produce appropriate levels of arousal in a time-dependent manner.

Abstract Drumming is a non-vocal auditory display producing airborne as well as seismic vibrations by tapping body extremities on a surface. It is mostly described as an alarm signal but is also discussed to signal dominance or mating quality. To clarify the function of drumming in Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus), we compared the occurrence of drumming during predator, opposite-sex and same-sex encounters. We tested 48 captive Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) in three experiments. In predator experiments, subjects were exposed alone or with their cagemate to aerial and terrestrial predator dummies. In social encounter experiments, familiar and unfamiliar male–female dyads and same-sex dyads were confronted. For the same-sex encounters, a dominance index was calculated for each subject based on the number of won and lost conflicts. Drumming and drumming-call combinations were counted, and a multi-parametric sound analysis was performed. In all experiments drumming and drumming-call combinations occurred. In predator experiments, more subjects drummed when confronted with the predator stimulus than in the habituation phase. In social encounter experiments, more subjects drummed when facing an unfamiliar than a familiar conspecific. In addition, the accompanying call type and body posture of the sender differed between experiments. Thus, we suggest that whereas drumming signals an increased arousal state of the sender, the accompanying call type and the body posture signal context specific information.

This study addresses emotion in second languages with the aim of understanding how late bilinguals incorporate the affective connotations of core vocabulary into their mental lexicon. Specifically, it examines whether there are emotionality differences between the L2 and the native languages of reference, and whether linguistic competence, contact with the L2 and its culture, and attitudes explain the different tendencies. For this purpose, a group of Spanish learners of L2 English assessed a corpus of 300 words on the affective dimensions of valence and arousal. Different statistical analyses showed that English learners value the lexical repertoire in a very similar way to Spanish speakers, differing markedly from English speakers. It is mainly concluded that the mother tongue exerts a significant influence on this perceptual process and that the emotional connotations of the L2 are incorporated into the mental lexicon through translations from the L1 as a result of an emotional transfer.

Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) scanners are unavoidably loud and uncomfortable experimental tools that are necessary for schizophrenia (SZ) neuroscience research. The validity of fMRI paradigms might be undermined by well-known sensory processing abnormalities in SZ that could exert distinct effects on neural activity in the presence of scanner background sound. Given the ubiquity of resting-state fMRI (rs-fMRI) paradigms in SZ research, elucidating the relationship between neural, hemodynamic, and sensory processing deficits during scanning is necessary to refine the construct validity of the MR neuroimaging environment. We recorded simultaneous electroencephalography (EEG)-fMRI at rest in people with SZ (n = 57) and healthy control participants without a psychiatric diagnosis (n = 46) and identified gamma EEG activity in the same frequency range as the background sounds emitted from our scanner during a resting-state sequence. In participants with SZ, gamma coupling to the hemodynamic signal was reduced in bilateral auditory regions of the superior temporal gyri. Impaired gamma-hemodynamic coupling was associated with sensory gating deficits and worse symptom severity. Fundamental sensory-neural processing deficits in SZ are present at rest when considering scanner background sound as a stimulus. This finding may impact the interpretation of rs-fMRI activity in studies of people with SZ. Future neuroimaging research in SZ might consider background sound as a confounding variable, potentially related to fluctuations in neural excitability and arousal.

Inspired by advances in wearable technologies, we design and perform human-subject experiments. We aim to investigate the effects of applying safe actuation (i.e., auditory, gustatory, and olfactory) for the purpose of regulating cognitive arousal and enhancing the performance states. In two proposed experiments, subjects are asked to perform a working memory experiment called n-back tasks. Next, we incorporate listening to different types of music, drinking coffee, and smelling perfume as safe actuators. We employ signal processing methods to seamlessly infer participants' brain cognitive states. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed safe actuation in regulating the arousal state and enhancing performance levels. Employing only wearable devices for human monitoring and using safe actuation intervention are the key components of the proposed experiments. Our dataset fills the existing gap of the lack of publicly available datasets for the self-management of internal brain states using wearable devices and safe everyday actuators. This dataset enables further machine learning and system identification investigations to facilitate future smart work environments. This would lead us to the ultimate idea of developing practical automated personalized closed-loop architectures for managing internal brain states and enhancing the quality of life.

Research frequently uses words as stimuli to assess cognitive and psychological processes. However, various attributes of these words, such as their semantic and emotional aspects, could potentially confound study results if not properly controlled. This study aims to establish a reliable foundation for the semantic and emotional aspects of words for research in Persian. To this end, the present study provided norms for 718 Persian nouns in arousal, valence, familiarity, and animacy dimensions. The words were selected from a previous English dataset (Warriner et al. in Behav Res Methods 45(4):1191–1207, 2013), translated into Persian, and rated by a total of 463 native Persian-speaking participants. The ratings were obtained through an online questionnaire using a 9-point Likert scale for emotional dimensions (i.e., valence and arousal) and a 5-point Likert scale for semantic dimensions (i.e., familiarity and animacy). The reliability of the ratings was measured using the split-half method, and the result indicated a high consistency of ratings in all dimensions. To assess the relationship between the emotional and semantic dimensions, Pearson correlation coefficient was conducted. Gender differences were investigated through the Mann-Whitney U test, and significant differences were observed in all dimensions. (1) Background: Subclinical hypothyroidism (SHT) is a condition that has been a subject of controversy in the literature due to its association with psychological and psychiatric symptoms as well as autonomic imbalances. To gain a better understanding of the effects of SHT on patients, a research study has been undertaken to investigate the presence of psychological symptoms and autonomic imbalances in a group of individuals diagnosed with SHT. (2) Methods: In this case–control study, 50 patients diagnosed with SHT who accessed the Department of Endocrinology of the University of Pisa were consecutively recruited. Psychological symptoms were measured through the Crown–Crisp Experiential Index (CCEI), whereas autonomic imbalance was described using the Psychophysiological Stress Profile (PSP), with simultaneous recording of the following psychophysiological parameters: Surface Electromyogram (sEMG), Skin Conductance Level (SCL), heart rate (HR), and peripheral temperature (PT). The patients’ values were compared to those of 50 healthy control subjects. (3) Results: The comparison between groups highlighted significant differences in the CCEI and PSP. In particular, patients reported higher rates of psychological symptoms (anxiety, depression, somatic complaints, and hysteria behavior). Significantly higher levels of autonomic arousal were also recorded. More specifically, the sEMG, SCL, HR, and PT values were different between the two groups. (4) Conclusions: The study has confirmed the presence of autonomic hyperarousal in patients diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroidism. This is likely due to the body’s attempt to compensate for a general lack of energy by accelerating the autonomic activity. The findings also underline the significance of a comprehensive assessment approach that takes into account various dimensions such as psychological and psychophysical well-being. Such an approach helps in evaluating the impact of subclinical diseases on overall health and well-being.

Abstract Across two online experiments, this study explored the effect of preferred background music on attentional state and performance, as well as on mood and arousal, during a vigilance task. It extended recent laboratory findings—showing an increase in task-focus and decrease in mind-wandering states with music—to environments with more distractions around participants. Participants—people who normally listen to background music during attention-demanding tasks—completed the vigilance task in their homes both with and without their chosen music and reported their attentional state, subjective arousal, and mood valence throughout the task. Experiment 1 compared music to relative silence and Experiment 2 compared music against the backdrop of continuous noise to continuous noise alone. In both experiments, music decreased mind-wandering and increased task-focus. Unlike in previous laboratory studies, in both experiments music also led to faster reaction times while increasing low-arousal external-distraction states. Importantly, mood and arousal increased with music and were shown to mediate its effects on reaction time and for the first time attentional state, both separately and together. Serial mediation effects were mostly confined to models where mood was entered first and arousal second and were consistent with the mood-arousal account of the impact of background music listening.

This study investigated the role of arousal and effort costs in the cognitive benefits of alternating between sitting and standing postures using a sit‐stand desk, while measuring executive functions, self‐reports, physiology, and neural activity in a 2‐h laboratory session aimed to induce mental fatigue. Two sessions were conducted with a one‐week gap, during which participants alternated between sitting and standing postures each 20‐min block in one session and remained seated in the other. In each block, inhibition, switching, and updating were assessed. We examined effects of time‐on‐task, acute (local) effects of standing versus sitting posture, and cumulative (global) effects of a standing posture that generalize to the subsequent block in which participants sit. Results (N = 43) confirmed that time‐on‐task increased mental fatigue and decreased arousal. Standing (versus sitting) led to acute increases in arousal levels, including self‐reports, alpha oscillations, and cardiac responses. Standing also decreased physiological and perceived effort costs. Standing enhanced processing speed in the flanker task, attributable to shortened nondecision time and speeded evidence accumulation processes. No significant effects were observed on higher‐level executive functions. Alternating postures also increased heart rate variability cumulatively over time. Exploratory mediation analyses indicated that the positive impact of acute posture on enhanced drift rate was mediated by self‐reported arousal, whereas decreased nondecision time was mediated by reductions in alpha power. In conclusion, alternating between sitting and standing postures can enhance arousal, decrease effort costs, and improve specific cognitive and physiological outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary Arousal is a central component of many emotional symptoms and can contribute to insomnia. Here we assessed how the timing and fluctuating nature of arousal‐related symptoms over the course of the day relate to insomnia symptom severity. In this study, 361 participants (M age = 31.9 years, 282 women, 77 men, 2 non‐binary individuals) completed the Insomnia Severity Index to assess severity of insomnia symptoms, followed by repeated ratings of anxiety or nervousness, stress, sleepiness, and feeling down via their mobile phone between ~08:00 hours and 00:00 hours across 1 day. Measures of dynamics included: mean levels across the day; variation (standard deviation); instability (mean squared successive differences); and resistance to change/inertia (first‐order autocorrelation). Time‐of‐day patterns were modelled using generalized additive mixed effects models. Insomnia symptom severity (mean Insomnia Severity Index = 9.1, SD = 5.2, range 0–25) was associated with higher mean levels of all arousal‐related symptoms, and increased instability and variation throughout the day in anxiety or nervousness, stress, and feeling down. Resistance to change (inertia) was not associated with insomnia symptom severity. Generalized additive mixed effects analyses showed that while individuals with more severe insomnia symptoms had elevated symptoms across the entire day, they were especially more anxious or nervous and sleepy in the early morning (~08:00 hours), anxious or nervous, stressed and sleepy in the late afternoon/early evening (~16:00 hours–21:00 hours), and anxious or nervous and stressed in the late evening (~22:00 hours). Remarkably, higher arousal occurred in the presence of high subjective sleepiness. AbstractThe rise in dessert consumption in Asia, especially in Malaysia, has captivated scholars seeking to understand the factors influencing consumers’ intentions to visit dessert stores. Hence, this research aims to investigate how the physical servicescape affects consumers’ emotional experiences, encompassing feelings of pleasure and arousal, thereby impacting their intentions to revisit, all through the lens of the SOR framework. Data from a survey of 207 participants who visited dessert stores in the past were collected. Subsequently, the data were analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. This study finds that aroma and cleanliness exhibit a significant positive influence on pleasure, whereas both music and aroma have a significant positive influence on arousal. Lastly, both pleasure and arousal exert a significant positive influence on revisit intentions. This study provides insights to business owners, policymakers, and other key stakeholders by elucidating the significant determinants of revisit intentions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Force steadiness can be influenced by visual feedback as well as presence of a cognitive tasks and potentially differs with age and sex. This study determined the impact of altered visual feedback on force steadiness in the presence of a difficult cognitive challenge in young and older men and women. Forty-nine young (19–30 yr; 25 women, 24 men) and 25 older (60–85 yr; 15 women; 10 men) performed low force (5% of maximum) static contractions with the elbow flexor muscles in the presence and absence of a cognitive challenge (counting backwards by 13) either with low or high visual feedback gain. The cognitive challenge reduced force steadiness (increased force fluctuation amplitude) particularly in women (cognitive challenge × sex: P < 0.05) and older individuals (cognitive challenge × age: P < 0.05). Force steadiness improved with high-gain visual feedback compared with low-gain visual feedback (P < 0.01) for all groups (all interactions: P > 0.05). Manipulation of visual feedback had no influence on the reduced force steadiness in presence of the cognitive challenge for all groups (all P > 0.05). These findings indicate that older individuals and women have greater risk of impaired motor performance of the upper extremity if steadiness is required during a low-force static contraction. Manipulation of visual feedback had minimal effects on the reduced force steadiness in presence of a difficult cognitive challenge. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
