WEAPONS - Abstract
Human evolution is broken in two: that before and that after the appearance of the images. From this event, the influence of thought on the world was total. Once started, this process was global and endless until today where it is still active. From images, these processes were transposed to weapons and conquests. The animal is then reduced to a useful material, to an illusion, to a reference, contrasting with lifestyles several hundred thousand years old where nature was respected and considered as a partner. By imposing itself on Europe, modern man has gradually destroyed all relationships with nature, his own included. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study deals with two Ottoman cannons in the Army Museum in Paris, which are published here for the first time. Despite their distinction and uniqueness in terms of decoration and the documentary inscriptions on them, and their association with important historical events, they have never been studied and analyzed before. They are from the Ottoman era, were made in Algeria and are inscribed in Arabic. These two cannons were among those transferred to the French city of Toulon in 1832, then to the Artillery Museum, and from there to the Army Museum in Paris where they remain to this day. Ottoman cannons are not often duplicated, and the study was able to correct the dating of these two cannons: they were recorded in the museum records and display cards as dating back to the year 985/1577, but the correct date for them is the beginning of Ramadan in the year 989/1581. The study indicates that the two cannons were manufactured in a single workshop by one manufacturer. This paper studies and analyzes a distinctive style of Ottoman cannon produced during the 10th/16th century. It shows the Algerian role in the manufacture of military cannons, with an indication of the decorative elements used on Ottoman cannons during that era. The study has two focuses: the first is descriptive and gives a complete description of the cannons, the decorations, and the inscriptions on them; the second is analytical, examining the form, function, and methods of manufacture and decoration.

- Abstract
The Upper Palaeolithic material made from mammoth ivory comprises many hunting weapons, mostly spear points and a few big hand spears, mainly from Eastern Europe notably Poland, the Czech Republic and Russia… Two objects stand out through their uniqueness. The first one is a fragment of a spearthrower, the only one made in ivory, decorated in semi round, in the shape of a young bovid, probably a bison. It dates to the Middle Magdalenian and comes from the La Madeleine shelter in Dordogne (France). The second one is a non-returning boomerang with a striated handle, dating to the Early Gravettian and coming from the Obłazowa cave in Poland. Its morphology and morphometry are very like some Australian examples. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The objects were discovered one in the cemetery at Șpălnaca/Șugud (Transylvania) and the other at Timișoara-Modoș Bridge (Romanian Banat) (Map 1). Both artefacts have been identified in the professional papers as daggers, when, in fact, they are saxes. Both saxes have been found inside graves of Avar men. The grave from Șpălnaca/Șugud which contained the sax is dated from the end of the Middle Avar period (680-710/720), whereas the other from Timișoara/Modoș Bridge is dated from the second part of the Late Avar period (760-810/830). The two saxes can be recognized as the first (I) Csiki, defined for the finds discovered in the Avar cemeteries from the Carpathian basin. The occurrence of the two saxes in the Avar graves from the Transylvanian plateau and the Romanian Banat widens the geographic area where the saxes are known to have been used by the Avars, including the eastern Carpathian basin. However, they are only a few compared to the total number of Avar graves from Western Romania, thus indicating that the sax wasn't a weapon employed on a large scale by the Avar warriors that entered this area. The saxes from Șpălnaca/Șugud and Timișoara/Modoș Bridge were probably used as weapons. At the same time, it is possible that they were only ceremonial weapons. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Used by the Iberians between the middle of the 6th century and the 1st century BC, the falcata seems to be the weapon of choice of these ancient peoples of the east coast of the Iberian Peninsula.

- Abstract
Organizational learning has the power to gift an organization with a competitive advantage. In our society the most competitive form of organization is probably the armed forces of every nation. This is because of the fact that if the armed forces isn´t at top of its competitive advantage the chance of losing increases, and compared to a commercial organization, a military organization won’t just lose money if it’s not at its peak, it may lose lives and its nations independence. A report from the Swe-dish army have shown a deficiency in the army´s learning when it comes to reporting experiences. This Essay looks deeper into the learning of the Swedish armed forces who have made a claim to be a learning organization. It does so by a text analysis on the army’s fundamental manuals and doc-trine´s analyzing them with Visser´s theory of military learning capacity. The results from the text analyses show that the fundamental manuals and doctrine´s almost fully encourages the necessary factors to inhibit a positive learning cycle according to Visser´s theory. The Biggest flaw according to the text analyses was that the documents didn’t show enough evidence of a system to store and spread the experiences within the army.

- Abstract
This volume contains six essays with a focus on how to conduct and lead ground operations. The essays are written by officers of the Swedish Higher Joint Command and Staff Programme. The contributions in the volume all have a focus on ground operations and tactics, but also cover a wide range of questions selected by the contributors themselves. The texts are written in conjunction with a field exercise [fältövning] to the Ardennes, where we put focus on the interplay between theory and practice. The course itself is part of the Program’s tactical profile. This profile aims to facilitate combining scientific foundations and the proven experience of the military profession. The profile is intended to provide a holistic and professionally-oriented, in-depth understanding of the tactical level., I detta bihäfte återfinns sex essäer på temat ledning av markoperationer.

- Abstract

The subject of many chance discoveries, the lesser Saône in the département of Tournugeois has never been the subject of systematic underwater research as occurred at Ouroux-sur-Saône from 1978 in the departement of Chalonnais. The discoveries made, however, should not be neglected as they may at some point offer useful information for deciding future methodical research.

Although the spearthrower is an iconic weapon of the European Upper Paleolithic, only 115 unquestionable specimens are known to date, their number increases rather slowly and many of them have no precise chronological and cultural context. For this reason, each discovery of a new specimen is important, especially when it belongs to a poorly documented type and comes from a precise archeological context. The spearthrower presented in this paper comes from the Gazel cave, the largest and best documented Magdalenian site in the Mediterranean Midi, excavated between 1977 and 1994. The Magdalenian levels of Gazel yielded more than 12,000 lithic artefacts, 1,000 pieces of worked bone and antler, 200 personal ornaments, and a very rich faunal record dominated by reindeer, snow hare and horse, complemented by ptarmigan and chough. The characteristics of the industries, and a series of 4 radiocarbon dates by AMS, reliably place the Magdalenian occupation of Gazel in the Late Middle Magdalenian (LMM, ca. 17.5-17 cal ka BP). The fragment of antler spearthrower was found at the bottom of layer 7 (fig. 1-4). It is 57 mm long, 13 mm wide and 9.5 m thick, with a curved profile in the distal part. Its upper side shows a longitudinal gutter, 5 mm wide and 1 mm deep, ending in a short spur (fig. 5). The presence of this “ gutter and spur” system to hold the projectile in place is characteristic of “ type 1” spearthrowers— i. e., “ mixed type” or “ androgynous” spearthrowers, as opposed to male and female types. The upper face is decorated with 4 longitudinal striae and the morphology of the proximal fracture suggests breakage during use. Layer 7 yielded 6 other objects that can unquestionably, probably or possibly classified as fragments of antler spearthrowers (fig. 6). Two specimens belong to type 3 (decorated with an herbivore fore-end, usually a horse, integrated in to the general shape of the shaft) and one can be related to type 4 (decorated with an “ in the round” figure, or ronde-bosse, protruding from the shaft). The material, dimensions and morphology of the last 3 objects are compatible with an identification as spearthrower fragments, without certainty. None is typologically or morphologically compatible with the androgynous specimen. Outside the specimen from Gazel, only 3 androgynous spearthrowers are known in the European Upper Paleolithic. The specimen from Isturitz (fig. 7) dates to the LMM but is morphologically very different from the object found at Gazel, and its identification as spearthrower remains debated. Conversely, the specimen from Laugerie-Basse (fig. 8-9), found in the 1860s and deprived of any precise archeological context, is very similar to the object from Gazel : it was made from an antler tine, shows a “ gutter and spur” system, has a curved profile in the distal part, and is decorated with striae. The specimen from Le Flageolet II (fig. 10) was found out of context but very probably comes from layer IX, which is 14C-dated to the Middle Magdalenian (probably the LMM according to its lithic industries). Made of bone, it is also very similar to the Gazel and Laugerie-Basse specimens : it has a “ gutter and spur” system, a slightly curved distal profile, and a decoration mostly made of carved incisions. While type 1 spearthrowers had no precise chronological attribution so far, the identification of the androgynous spearthrower from Gazel firmly places this type within the LMM, between 17.5 and 17 cal ka BP according to the 14C data from layer 7. This discovery also extends the distribution area of type 1 spearthrowers outside the Périgord to the Montagne Noire, thus adding to the list of evidence for long-distance contacts in this region during the Magdalenian. The attribution of type 1 spearthrowers to the LMM reinforces the idea that this period constitutes, at the scale of the whole Magdalenian, the peak of technical and stylistic variation for this type of weapon. It is yet another example of the technical inventiveness visible in weapon design during this period, and which represents the culmination of a longterm trend starting in the beginning of the Magdalenian. The specimen from Gazel shows small dimensions compared to the ones from Laugerie-Basse and Le Flageolet II (fig. 11). These unusually small dimensions are also found on a few specimens belonging to other types of Magdalenian spearthrowers. Abstract: A mole gun is a weapon, which is used to trap and kill moles. This report provides an overview of the state of knowledge of mole gun injuries, comparable to blast injuries caused by fireworks, explosive or gunshot. Over a 2-year period, the authors reported their experience with ten hand injuries caused by mole gun. Radial side of the hand was often concerned, particularly the thumb. The authors explain their choices in the management of such lesions. Surgery was performed primarily and a large debridement currently seemed to offer the best outcome for the patient. Blast, crush, burns and lacerations may explain the higher rate of amputation to the digits. A long period of physiotherapy, specifically of the hand, was needed before the patient could return to work. This ballistic hand trauma encountered by surgeons requires knowledge and understanding of these injuries. It should be in accordance with firearms law because of severe injuries encountered and possible lethal wounds. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

To ensure public safety, existing bridges are often evaluated for their load-bearing capacity. Realistic evaluation must take into account the actual nonlinear stress-strain characteristics of the bridge materials and the interaction among its structural components at all stages of loading up to failure. The finite element method is particularly suitable for this type of analysis, but nonlinear finite element formulations involve many assumptions that must be verified before any practical application. In this study, the accuracy of a nonlinear finite element program developed by the authors for the analysis of composite steel-concrete bridges is checked by comparing its results with experimental data from simply supported and continuous beams tested by others and from a 1/3 scale multi-girder composite bridge tested by the authors. Good agreement is observed between the measured and the computed load-deflection responses and strains at all stages of loading up to the maximum load, which demonstrates the accuracy of the finite element formulation and the validity of its assumptions. Abstract: Objectives: This work consists in a study of the links between the concept of dangerousness and military environment so as to clarify predominant factors, which have an influence on the expression of a potential dangerousness in a hierarchical and well-organized setting. Methods: The concept of dangerousness refers to the uncertain eventuality of a threat, by implying potential realization of a danger, which can express himself according to multiple modalities, the common denominator of which articulates around a dimension of violence. The explicitation of the diverse notions, which are frequently associated with it in a partial semantic stepping, was a preliminary exercise necessary for the study of this complex phenomenon, by distinguishing what is of the register of the subject, its environment and the present situation. From these preliminary data, our study of the dangerousness was limited to that of a dangerousness applied to a given environment, the military environment, going from theoretical general points to a more restricted expression of the dangerousness. This transition finds its relevance in the absence of specificity a priori of the military population in comparison with the general population, where only the function here comes to particularize the subject. Peculiarities of expression of the dangerousness due to the dimension of constraints that the military environment implies, but also because of specificities organized around two essential coordinates, that liking the question of the weapons the availability of which appears to the foundation of the exercise of the function of serviceman and that bound to the question of the group within, which evolves the subject the interrelations of which modulate and sometimes condition the emergence of a potential dangerousness. Thus was described a particular dangerous collective phenomenon, the panic, whose emergence can deeply disorganize the group by representing a serious danger for its timelessness. The importance of the figure of the chief was emphasized by creating the unity of the group and giving sense to action; his lapse especially during time of war can be the source of important failures in the collective working leading to severe damages. Conclusions: Dangerousness seems to be connected with army for intrinsic reasons, as the use of weapons, which is correlative to its missions and the interrelations between a subject and a group whose disorganization can induce grave consequences. Military constraints due to its strict rules and discipline can participate to an appearance of dangerousness in particular during operational situations, whereas training and preparation enable to reduce the dangerousness, which is involved in these extreme conditions. This paper explores a particular sub-category of objects, namely weapons. In Hardy’s work, guns, swords, cannons, and other tools of destruction are put to use with disturbing frequency not in the public arena of battle but in private spaces, for courtship (as in Troy’s sword), or to settle what the police might call domestic incidents (as in Boldwood’s gun). The insinuation into private/domestic space by weapons designed for impersonal combat is met by a movement in the opposite direction which sees the conversion of everyday objects into weapons. The suddenness with which weapons appear in the narrative, the fact that any object may be repurposed as a weapon, and the suggestion that weapons, like other objects in Hardy, have agency, contribute to the production of the uncanny. I conclude by suggesting grounds for comparison between Conrad’s The Secret Agent and Tess of the d’Urbervilles. In both novels, a woman is practised upon by an unscrupulous man and eventually revenges herself in the same way, using the same object, a carving-knife, as weapon. Although the two novelists use different techniques to stockpile affect in the object for sudden, cataclysmic disbursement, they both leave open the question of the object’s agency.
