ORDINATION , *CLERGY , *BISHOPS , *CATHEDRALS , *POPES , *TEMPLES - Abstract
In Great Moravia, a conflict between the archbishop Method and the Bavarian clergy grew. As results of this tension pope John VIII. summoned Method in June 879 from Great Moravia to Rome. In his letter, he named Method as „Archbishop of the holy Pannonian Church". Method travelled as member of the official embassy with the nobleman Zemežízeň. In Rome, the message was a significant success in both the ecclesiastical and socio-political fields. The pope took ruler Svätopluk and his territory under the patronage of Rome. Method defended himself and pope appointed him archbishop of the „Holy Moravian Church „. At the same time, he ordained the bishop for Nitra, Svätopluk's confidant, the Frankish Benedictine Wiching. This de facto established a Great Moravian ecclesiastical province with a solid structure. Method until that time the titular archbishop with freer competencies became the resident archbishop. It means he had to have his seat with the archbishop's temple. Wiching had his seat in Nitra. Based on researches, it can be claimed that this seat with the church was located in the area of today's castle cathedral. We must look for the Method's seat in the area of the Moravian Principality. Method was buried in his cathedral „in the wall to the left of the altar of the Virgin Mary". This description could be helped in the analysis of remains of known Great Moravian churches. Concerning analyses, we must reject the churches in Bratislava and Devín castles, Church N. 3 in Valy (Mikulčice), Chuch in "Špitálky" etc. It is perhaps the locality "Sady" in Uherské Hradiště as Method's residence. In the south wall of the archeological founded church, the rest of a grave was discovered. The political center is assumed at Valy (Mikulčice), but it could be also in Staré Město near Uherské Hradiště. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alexios I Komnenos, one of the greatest Byzantine emperors, was forced to carry out military and fiscal reforms. As a result, state taxes were notably raised; the powers of tax officials (praktors) were enhanced; and cases of confiscating Church land and other real estate appeared. These general tendencies during Alexios I’s reign are fully confirmed by the data laid out in several letters that Theophylact, the Archbishop of Ohrid, wrote. We learn from them, among other things, that a paroikos (peasant) named Lazarus launched a dispute before the emperor himself, accusing the archbishop of setting fire to his property and then of expelling him from the village. Theophylact was also accused of generating excessive income and possessing a costly estate, as well as of usurping a village near Ohrid. Over the course of the long-standing legal case, by sending letters to influential state officials, he tried to diminish and rebut the accusations. In his defence, he pointed out that attempts were being made to spread hostility against him both among the residents of Ohrid and across Macedonia. Also, he complained that state taxes were raised enormously. Although at a first glance it appears unusual that an archbishop should become entangled in a serious and prolonged dispute with a paroikos, the situation becomes clearer on learning that Lazarus’s grudge was in fact spurred and fully taken advantage of by the state’s tax officials. Through the case of Lazarus, who was used as their mouthpiece, they, in fact, undermined the ownership and immunity rights and privileges of the Archbishopric. All of that worked in favour of raising the income of the state at the expense of that of the Church. In other words, it appears that through the said dispute some sort of “interventionism” in favour of the state and at the Church’s expense was at work.

Using a considerable variety of sources (chronicles, hagiography, charters, letters) the author of the present article shows a process of formation of the system of the Breton bishoprics during the Carolingian era, when this land was a part of the Frankish empire. There were no regular episcopal sees in Brittany before the 9th century: Dol and Léon were monastery-bishoprics; Tréguier and Aleth, possibly, had the same nature. Bishops appeared there only from time to time. In the middle of the 9th century there were sees in Aleth, Quimper, Léon, and Dol. And they were substituted regularly. Obviously, an attempt to establish episcopal sees in Tréguier and Saint-Brieuc was vain. Along with a territorial expansion of the power of the Breton duke three others bishoprics founded in the Roman and post-Roman times — Nantes, Rennes, and Vannes — became parts of the Breton church. The sought of duke Nominoe for the independence from West-Frankish kingdom led to the «schism» of 849 which actually meant a separation of the most of the Breton bishoprics from the Gallic Church. King Salomon in 860s tried to promote the see of Dol to a metropolitan grade, but with no success due to determined resistance of the pope Nicolas I and the Frankish bishops. But in spite of the absence of archbishopric in Brittany the church of the region from the last third of the ninth century onwards run its quite different from the rest of the Western Сhurch way of life with its own synods and traditions. In this sense the Breton Church resembled other Celtic Churches of the Early Middle Ages.

Prizren's diocese is one of the oldest diocese's seats of the Serbian Church. Based on the scarce historical written sources, its foundation is connected for the 10th century, although archaeological researches move the limits of its diocese's seat (the Church of Virgin Ljeviška) in early Christian period. The inclusion of Prizren's Diocese in the network of the Serbian diocese's seats and its separation from the jurisdiction of Ohrid's Diocese from church-canonical aspect followed church-legal provisions of Parliament's fathers by use of the Canon 17 of Halkidon's Parliament, which will be the basis for the establishing of the first structure of the Serbian church under the St. Sava in Studenica in 1219.

The author states that the area of Bosnia was in historical sources more present as the area of the Serbian state. Although it belonged to Ohridska Archbishopric from jurisdictional point of view, its state and ecclesiastical boundaries were being shifted depending upon the political- ecclesiastical circumstances in the surrounding. The struggle of Hungary and Rome Catholic Archbishoprics so as to subject it to their sphere of interest is clearly visible in the period of Ban Kulin ruling.

This paper analyzes the reactions among the Philippine clergy after the erection of the Archbishopric of Manila in 1595 and therefore the imposition of the Tridentine decrees at the ecclesiastical jurisdiction over the Pacific, until the death of Archbishop Diego Vázquez de Mercado (1616). Unpublished correspondence between ecclesiastical figures from the Philippines serves as the main basis for this paper, which intends to show how the general disobedience of the clergy might have delayed the introduction to the Philippines of the spirit of the Counter-Reformation, which had already governed Spanish pastoral ministry for over twenty years.

The purpose of this study is to highlight and present, through some examples, how the Slavonic kingdoms of the Balkans obtained autonomy for their Churches from Constantinople during the 13th and 14th centuries, as well as the multiple political interests that led them to consider this concession as the achievement of perfect autocephaly.

The Ecclesiastical Province of Cambrai offers a highly interesting test case for both the field of borderlands studies and transregional history: since its erection in 1559 at the southern border of the Habsburg Low Countries, it hosted Catholic refugees from different regional backgrounds, such as the British Isles, France and the insurgent provinces of the Low Countries. This contribution argues that (1) the frontier position of the Ecclesiastical Province of Cambrai led to (2) systematic encounters between Catholic exiles of diverse regional provenances. Rather than solely seeking to establish segregated exile communities, as argued in older nationalist historiographies, (3) these refugees interacted with their host society, and inscribed themselves in pre-existing patterns of cross-border mobility with France. As such, the Cambrai borderlands came to constitute a transregional node within the Catholic Reformation of the early modern era.

The dissertation analyzes the relationship between church and state in the Serbian lands between the 11th and 13th centuries. The term church refers to the canonically and historically rooted church organizations as well as to the unrecognized heretical movements and communities. The term state means any form of temporal authority (direct and indirect), which was operating on the territory of Serbian lands (Serbia, Dioclea, Travunia, Zachulmia and Bosnia) in the given chronological framework. Chronologically, the work is limited to the period from the 11th to the 13th century, but some historical processes had their roots in earlier epochs, and that is why they were also given some necessary attention in the work. By exploring the relationship between church and state in the Serbian lands, the goal is to get to the answers to questions such as the time of the establishment of certain Roman Catholic archdioceses – that of Ragusa and of Antivari, to examine the influence of the Orthodox, Byzantine churches (the Metropolitanate of Dyrrhachium and the Archbishopric of Ohrid) in the said area, to determine more precisely the time of the emergence of the Serbian Archbishopric, to present its organization and development, and then to determine the time of occurrence, spread, way of action and organization of heresy (Bogomil and Patarin), observing all of that through the context of the political events that accompanied each of these processes.
