ABSTRACT We reviewed the scientific literature to assess the current status of recreational fishing in the Neotropical region. In total, 122 publications met our criteria and are included here. Since 1990, the number of studies published on recreational fishing in the region significantly increased. Recreational fishing was evaluated in 13 countries and two territories. Most studies were in marine environments. In total, 372 fish species captured through recreational Neotropical fishing were registered. In South American countries, the presence of nonnative species was significant. Studies were concentrated in a few countries or were not published in scientific articles, conference papers, or book chapters, and some aquatic environments, such as coastal areas, bays, coastal lagoons, and reservoirs, were not studied. In addition, there are few lines of investigation into the practice of this activity in the region, and new investigations are necessary, especially with respect to environmental problems. Concern over microplastics (MPs) in the environment is rising. Microplastics are generally known to exist in aquatic settings, but less is known about their occurrence in soil ecosystems. When plastic waste builds up in agricultural areas, it can have a negative impact on the environment and food sources, as well as have an indirect effect on all trophic levels of the food chain. This paper addresses the relationship between microplastics and the management of plastic waste, which contributes to their accumulation, and it describes the sources and the movement processes of microplastics in agricultural soils as a result of natural events and disasters. Evaluating the impact of weather on coastal microplastic contamination is critical, as extreme weather events have become more frequent in recent years. This study sheds light on how weather patterns affect the dispersion of plastic waste in terrestrial habitats, including the impacts of seasonality and extreme weather. According to the results of this review, typhoons, monsoons, rainfall, and floods contribute significantly more microplastics to the surface sediment through surface runoff and wind transport, particle redistribution caused by agitated waves, and fragmentation under intense abrasion forces. Aquatic hyphomycetes decompose submerged detritus in aquatic ecosystems making organic matter more nutritious and palatable for consumption by aquatic invertebrates. They can be classified into three ecological groups based on their morphology and form of sporulation: aero-aquatic fungi, facultative aquatic fungi and Ingoldian fungi. The current study provides an inventory of aquatic hyphomycetes associated with submerged debris (leaves and twigs) of streams and lakes in the Atlantic Forest of Rio Grande do Norte. In addition, new records for the area are described. Substrate collections were carried out in eight streams and two lakes. Two methodologies were used for the analysis of decomposing substrates: moist chamber and submerged incubation. Seventy-seven taxa were found, distributed in 49 genera of aquatic hyphomycetes associated with plant debris in water bodies of the Atlantic Forest of Rio Grande do Norte. Sixteen taxa are new records for Rio Grande do Norte, two are new records for Brazil (Gyrothrix encephalarti and Triscelophorus konajensis) and one for the Americas (Flagellospora minuta). The study demonstrated a high species richness of aquatic hyphomycetes for the Atlantic Forest of Rio Grande do Norte and can serve as a model for studies on the conservation of Funga in these areas. Water molecules pose a significant obstacle to conventional adhesive materials. Nevertheless, some marine organisms can secrete bioadhesives with remarkable adhesion properties. For instance, mussels resist sea waves using byssal threads, sandcastle worms secrete sandcastle glue to construct shelters, and barnacles adhere to various surfaces using their barnacle cement. This work initially elucidates the process of underwater adhesion and the microstructure of bioadhesives in these three exemplary marine organisms. The formation of bioadhesive microstructures is intimately related to the aquatic environment. Subsequently, the adhesion mechanisms employed by mussel byssal threads, sandcastle glue, and barnacle cement are demonstrated at the molecular level. The comprehension of adhesion mechanisms has promoted various biomimetic adhesive systems: DOPA-based biomimetic adhesives inspired by the chemical composition of mussel byssal proteins; polyelectrolyte hydrogels enlightened by sandcastle glue and phase transitions; and novel biomimetic adhesives derived from the multiple interactions and nanofiber-like structures within barnacle cement. Underwater biomimetic adhesion continues to encounter multifaceted challenges despite notable advancements. Hence, this work examines the current challenges confronting underwater biomimetic adhesion in the last part, which provides novel perspectives and directions for future research. This study aimed to optimize the removal of tannic acid (TA) from simulated wastewater by applying the electrocoagulation (EC) process and the alum nanoparticles (Al NPs) generated during the EC process, using the response surface method (RSM) methodology based on the central composite design (CCD). The structure and state of Al NPs were studied by X-ray diffraction analysis, field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller analyses. We used four independent factors: current–voltage (20.83, 41.66, 62.49, 83.32, and 104.16 A/m2)/Al NPs dosage (0.1, 0.325, 0.55, 0.775, and 1 g/L), initial pH (5, 6, 7, 8, and 9/ 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11), initial TA concentration (10, 35, 60, 85, and 110 mg/L), and treatment time (10, 20, 30, 40, and 50 min). In addition, the total TA removal percentage was taken as a response variable. The analysis of the responses was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) as a statistical method. The quadratic model was proposed, and the ANOVA and model fitness were produced through RSM, with the coefficient of determination (R2) above 0.94 and 0.96 for all two responses representing the high importance of the suggested model. The EC process and the Al NPs removed TA with a maximum efficiency of 89.79% and 96.33%, respectively, in the optimal condition. Sediment slurries, characterized by their high concentrations of fine-grained cohesive sediment, are prevalent in various aquatic environments, including fluid mud, sediment gravity flows, and dredging slurries. Abundant microplastics have been detected in sediment slurries, which indicates that these slurries function as carriers for the transport of microplastics. However, there is a dearth of understanding on how sediment slurries transport microplastics. To ascertain the transport mechanisms, elucidating the effects of microplastics on the rheological properties of sediment slurries is a prerequisite because these properties govern the flow dynamics and mobility of such slurries. This study conducts experimental and theoretical investigations to examine, interpret, and quantify the effects of microplastics on the rheological properties of sediment slurries. Microplastics are shown to increase the yield stress and viscosity of sediment slurries via enhancing sediment aggregation. A new descriptor, specifically, the effective volume fraction, is proposed to characterize the effects of microplastics on sediment aggregation. Based on the newly-proposed descriptor, a new analytical model is proposed to predict the yield stress and viscosity of sediment slurries with microplastics. This study lays a foundation for further interpretating the flow dynamics and thus the transport processes of sediment slurries laden with microplastics.

Latent fingermark detection can become increasingly difficult in the weeks following deposition, due to chemical and physical changes influenced by environment. There has been increased research interest into ageing mechanisms of fingermark residue, however these studies have typically been conducted in dry, indoors conditions. Less information is available regarding degradation processes that may occur in scenarios involving water and the potential longevity of porous substrates under such conditions. A pilot study was conducted to investigate the performances of Oil Red O (ORO) and physical developer (PD) on samples submerged in different aquatic environments in a laboratory setting. Charged fingermarks from three donors were deposited on copy paper and immersed in either salt water or freshwater; still or with water flow. Samples were treated at multiple intervals (1, 12, 20 and 40 days) after submersion. Results showed that high quality of development could be achieved up to 40 days after immersion. The overall performances of ORO and PD were generally unaffected in the early stages of the study. Physical and chemical degradation of both latent residue and substrate were observed, which were increased by salt and water movement. While PD appeared to be less affected by potential chemical changes, it was less effective than ORO due to substrate degradation in moving salt water. These results present the first steps towards better understanding the practical effects of degradation processes specific to fingermarks on porous substrates underwater.

This study contributes to the current state of knowledge by highlighting the physical–chemical interactions between biochar and dyes. The removal of Acid Orange 7 (AO7) dye by a modified biochar obtained from the wastes of mandarin peels (MPs) has been investigated in this work. A dehydration procedure with 80% H2SO4 under reflux was applied to produce an innovative biochar from MPs and then boiled with H2O2 and followed by boiling with triethylenetetramine to make mandarin biochar-C-TETA (MBCT). FTIR, SEM, EDX, BJH, BET, TGA, and DTA analyses were applied to investigate the MBCT. FTIR analysis showed an additional peak that confirmed the addition of the NH2 group to the MBCT structure. An amorphous carbon structure was also confirmed by XRD analysis. The AO7 dye solution pH was proved to give the best absorption at pH 2.0. Significant removal of AO7 dye 99.07% using an initial concentration of 100 mg/L of AO7 dye and a 0.75 g/L MBCT. The Langmuir (LNR) and Freundlich (FRH) isotherm models investigated the experimental results. The LNR was best suited to handle the working MBCT data. The maximum adsorption capacity (Qm) calculated for the MBCT was 312.5 mg/g using 0.25 g/L of the MBCT. Kinetic studies were conducted using the intraparticle diffusion (IND), film diffusion (FD), pseudo-first-order (PFOR), and pseudo-second-order (PSOR) models. The absorption rate was calculated using the ultimate value of the linear regression coefficient (R2 > 0.99), and the PSOR rate model was found to ideally describe the absorption process. The point of zero charge (pHPZC) was found to be 10.17. The electrostatic attractive-forces between the sorbent surface positively charged sites and negatively charged anionic dye molecules were the primary mechanism of the MBCT sorption of the AO7 dye's anion absorption. The results indicate that the manufactured MBCT adsorbent may be useful for removing the AO7 dye from wastewater. Abstract To address urban turtle sampling challenges, we presented Hookless fishing with clip, a cost-effective method for sampling this important group. Effectiveness, biases and potential advantages were analysed in comparison to two commonly used methods (funnel trap and hand capture). Fieldwork was conducted between August and November/2021 in four areas in Brazil, using the three methods simultaneously. A total of 195 turtles from four species (Phrynops geoffroanus, Hydromedusa tectifera, Trachemys dorbigni and T. scripta elegans) were captured. Funnel trap demonstrate a significantly higher capture than hand capture, while Hookless fishing showed no significant difference in captures compared to funnel trap. The highest catch per unit effort values were observed for the new method (0.37) and the funnel trap (0.34). Despite being widely used, funnel traps were the only method to exhibit male bias. Our findings revealed that Hookless fishing with clip exhibited remarkable capture efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and ease of transport and utilization; however, it requires operator presence. Nevertheless, the proposed method, both as the primary or auxiliary approach, appears efficient in enhancing captures and reducing costs and risks. This innovative method has the potential to assist researchers studying omnivorous and carnivores freshwater turtles in environments worldwide, especially in human settlements.

Light traps are devices utilized in biomonitoring studies across various aquatic environments. Although light traps are used globally, few studies report their efficacy in capturing fish larvae in the Neotropics. To address this gap, this study aimed to assess the efficacy of light traps in capturing larvae of six fish species commonly found in Neotropical rivers. Additionally, we aimed to evaluate the effect of light color on larval capture. To accomplish this, we selected larvae from six species: Cyprinus carpio, Ctenopharingodon idella, Piaractus mesopotamicus, Pimelodus maculatus, Prochilodus lineatus, and Rhamdia quelen. Each experiment lasted seven days, and six types of traps were tested, including those without light (control) and those with light (green, red, yellow, white, and blue), and installed in triplicate. A total of 18 traps were randomly positioned in earthen ponds containing the six species of interest. Each species was assessed separately in six experiments. Larvae were counted, measured, and identified daily according to their developmental stage. The light traps collected 30,498 larvae, whereas the control traps only collected 39 larvae by the end of the experiment. Larvae from species of the Cypriniformes order were the most captured, while those from the Siluriformes order were least captured. The light traps exhibited selectivity in capturing larvae at different developmental stages, which varied according to species. Traps installed with green lights captured a greater number of larvae and were more efficient at capturing larvae from a wider variety of species. In contrast, traps installed with red light led to the capture of fewer larvae. Therefore, by their ability to attract a greater number of larvae, compared to control, and selectively capture larvae at different developmental stages at variable rates, depending on light source, light traps can be a valuable tool in biomonitoring and managing fish larvae in Neotropical environments.

The increase of micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) in aquatic environments has become a significant concern due to their potential toxicological effects on ecosystems, food web dynamics, and human health. These plastic particles emerge from a range of sources, such as the breakdown of larger plastic waste, consumer products, and industrial outputs. This review provides a detailed report of the transmission and dangers of MNPs in aquatic ecosystems, environmental behavior, and interactions within aquatic food webs, emphasizing their toxic impact on marine life. It explores the relationship between particle size and toxicity, their distribution in different tissues, and the process of trophic transfer through the food web. MNPs, once consumed, can be found in various organs, including the digestive system, gills, and liver. Their consumption by lower trophic level organisms facilitates their progression up the food chain, potentially leading to bioaccumulation and biomagnification, thereby posing substantial risks to the health, reproduction, and behavior of aquatic species. This work also explores how MNPs, through their persistence and bioaccumulation, pose risks to aquatic biodiversity and disrupt trophic relationships. The review also addresses the implications of MNPs for human health, particularly through the consumption of contaminated seafood, highlighting the direct and indirect pathways through which humans are exposed to these pollutants. Furthermore, the review highlights the recommendations for future research directions, emphasizing the integration of ecological, toxicological, and human health studies to inform risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies to address the global challenge of plastic pollution in aquatic environments.

Wetland areas encompass a range of natural habitats characterized by high animal and plant biodiversity. Understanding the impacts of environmental decline in such areas requires in-depth knowledge of the overall biodiversity. This study dataset provides a first evaluation of important sites of insect and arachnids biodiversity in peat bogs, marshes, and streams in Aspromonte National Park in Calabria, southern Italy. It is a basic faunal survey that aids understanding of the importance of these large faunal groups in sites mainly within this national park. The data obtained highlight a rich insect and spider diversity in this region and provide useful information to use to outline strategies for the conservation and the management of inland aquatic environments at risk from climate change. Moreover, as baseline data, these will be useful for future monitoring and management of other inland aquatic environments that are similar to those of the study sites reported herein.

Context. The usual strategy for monitoring of eutrophication process is the use of traditional limnological methods, based on laboratory analysis. These procedures involve costly and time consuming analyses, usually with in vitro methodologies, which can still have limitations in terms of sensitivity and reliability, if poorly managed. Phytoplankton pigments, such as chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), are highly fluorescent and can provide the environmental status of water bodies. Aims. This study aims to analyse, compare and evaluate an estimation of Chl-a through fluorescence in public water sources in the Brazilian cerrado. Exploratory statistical analyses were conducted by using absolute fluorescence units (AFU) and relative fluorescence units (RFU) compared with traditional laboratory data (standard procedure for the determination of Chl-a by spectroscopic methods) to evaluate the significance of differences in estimating Chl-a concentration. Subsequently, empirical models, based on spectral band combinations, were generated to convert fluorescence measurement in Chl-a concentration, by linear regression. Key results. The generated model found a strong correlation and coefficient of determination (r = 0.88; R² = 0.78). The efficiency of the model was also confirmed by statistical indicators (RMSE = 1.27, MAPE = 26.72 and BIAS = -6.32). Conclusions. We concluded that the estimate of Chl-a through RFU was better than through AFU. Implications. Therefore, based on the results of this study, it is recommended that RFU be used to obtain more precise and accurate estimates of Chl-a concentration through empirical models based on linear regression. Since the end of the 19th century the lower course of the Negro River was the subject of archaeological explorations and research, mainly on the southern bank. Conversely, on the northern shore (Patagones district, Buenos Aires province) no archaeological investigations have been carried out. Recent systematic archaeological surveys along this shore and the adjacent Atlantic coast were carried out. Here we present the preliminary results of the El Churlaquín site. Issues related to geoarchaeology, chronology, lithic and pottery technology, subsistence and taphonomy are discussed. The site corresponds to a residential base redundantly occupied between ca. 3700- 1500 years BP (last part of the middle Holocene and initial late Holocene). The archaeological record shows similarities with sites of the middle course of the Río Negro. Finally, as proposed for the middle sector of the basin, the evidence recovered from El Churlaquín allows us to hypothesize a sustained use of the aquatic environments. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Early recovery of human bodies from the water requires an understanding of how a body acts in the water. However, there is currently a lack of baseline data surrounding body movement in British Columbian (B.C.) waters. This study aims to assist Canadian response agencies with understanding and predicting body movement in outdoor waterbodies in B.C. One hundred and eighty‐six water‐related fatalities in B.C. waters, including lakes, rivers, and the coastal Pacific Ocean, were examined to determine the recovery times and displacement patterns of submerged decedents. Cases between 2010 and 2021 were extracted from the Police Records Information Management Environment (PRIME‐BC) for analysis. Most deaths were unintentional, followed by suicide and homicide, and most often occurred in rivers, followed by lakes and the ocean. Regardless of waterbody, the first day was the most successful recovery period, with decedents most often recovered close to the incident location. Nearly 16% of individuals in this study were not recovered. Recovery success was greatest in lakes, followed by rivers and the ocean. Body displacement was the least in lakes, while rivers resulted in the furthest and most variable displacement. Low recovery success in the ocean is likely due to decedents being quickly displaced out of the search area, never to be found. The results of this study suggest that knowledge of body movement in outdoor aquatic environments remains incomplete. Further empirical research based on known data is necessary to continue improving prediction of body movement and increase early recovery success. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acanthamoeba is a free-living amoeba (FLA) that is ubiquitous in nature and can cause serious pathologies in humans. This protozoan has been detected in several environmental sources, such as soil, water, and swimming pools. The aim of this study was to evaluate the occurrence and molecular diversity of Acanthamoeba spp. in aquatic environments of the state of Sergipe, northeastern Brazil, and to determine the pathogenic potential of the isolated samples. A total of 138 samples were collected from 69 aquatic environments and, after cell culture, 74% of the samples were positive for FLA, 47% belonging to the genus Acanthamoeba. Genotypic analysis was performed using the primers JDP1 and JDP2, confirming distinct Acanthamoeba genotypes: 18 (75%) isolates belonging to genotype T4, two (8%) to T3, and one isolate (4%) to genotype T5. Tests carried out to analyze the pathogenic potential showed that 11 isolates could grow at 0.5 M mannitol concentration and seven isolates supported hyperosmolarity. In the thermotolerance test, two isolates grew at 37°C. These results confirm the presence and the pathogenic potential of FLA of the genus Acanthamoeba in aquatic environments of the municipalities of Sergipe. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a critical global issue affecting public and animal health. The overuse of antibiotics in human health, animal production, agriculture, and aquaculture has led to the selection of antibiotic-resistant strains, particularly in Gram-negative bacteria. Mutations and horizontal gene transfer play a significant role in the development of antimicrobial resistance, leading to the reduced efficacy of current antibiotics. Today, AMR in bacteria and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) are increasingly recognized in multiple environmental sources, including recreational and irrigation waters. This study aims to identify Gram-negative bacteria from surface aquatic reservoirs in southern Chile and assess their susceptibility to clinically relevant antibiotics. Water samples were collected from four lakes, five rivers, one waterfall, and one watershed in southern Chile to isolate environmental Gram-negative bacilli (GNB). API-20E and MALDI–TOF were employed for bacterial identification. Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion tests and multiplex PCR were performed to determine their susceptibility profile. A total of 26 GNB strains were isolated from environmental water samples, predominantly belonging to the Pseudomonas (n = 9) and Acinetobacter (n = 7) genera. Among these strains, 96.2% were resistant to ampicillin and cefazoline, while 26.9% and 34.6% showed resistance to ceftazidime and cefepime, respectively. Additionally, 38.5% exhibited resistance to colistin. Two Enterobacter cloacae strains obtained from Cachapoal River (sixth region) and Villarrica Lake (ninth region), respectively, presented a multidrug-resistant (MDR) phenotype and carried at least two extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes. Thus, antibiotic-resistant GNB and ARGs were found in natural water reservoirs, raising concerns about the dissemination of resistance determinants among potentially pathogenic bacteria in environmental microbial communities. The most promising areas of ecological assessment, regulation, and quality management of soils and lands include in-depth study of their ecological functions and the role of the anthropogenic factor in the formation of a lands' natural complex established within the boundaries of specific land plots, considering the natural conditions, type of natural-resource use management, and direct–inverse relationships with adjoining environmental segments; study of natural relations between the soil cover and subsurface geological layers; determination of permissible changes in soil quality due to petroleum contamination and the forest and peat harvesting taking into account the prospects of natural self-repair (regeneration) of landscapes; study of direct and inverse relationships among soils, aquatic environments, and semi-aquatic landscapes exposed to contamination of lands; identification of functional relationship between the state of soils and the quality of atmospheric air; and insight into aspects of soil interface with other environmental compartments and the production and consumption waste. Analysis of the existing laws aimed at protecting soil as an environmental compartment suggests that the structure of environmental-protection legislation that incorporates in its framework the federal laws regulating the protection of environmental compartments contains gaps, and so a soil-protection law needs to be developed. This study presents a novel solution for the chemical modification of Jerash natural kaolin clay (NC) after HCl leaching to obtain nano-Kaolinite (NK), for the investigations of the adsorption uptake of heavy Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II)-ions onto modified NK from aqueous discharges, under the variation of pertinent constraints such as medium pH, adsorbent dosage, initial metal concentration, contact time, and temperature. Additionally, the BET analysis reveals an increase in the surface area and volume of the mesoporous structure after acid leaching of the natural KC. Thermodynamic analysis reveals negative values for (ΔG°) and positive figures for (ΔH°) and (ΔS°), which accentuates that the adsorption process is spontaneous, random, and endothermic. The Langmuir and Freundlich Isotherms are the best-fit models to predict the adsorption data, the ultimate removal capacities were obtained as 250, 232.6, and 222.2 mg/gadsorbent for heavy Pb(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II)- ions, respectively, at initial metal concentration of 40 mg/Lsolution, medium temperature of 303.15 K, and initial pH 5.5. By considering these merits of synthesizing a porous structure with intensive nucleation sites on the modified NK surface, a competent and low-prized adsorbent could be used for HM-ions remediation from an aqueous environment and the protection of public health. Mutations and horizontal gene transfer play a significant role in the development of antimicrobial resistance, leading to the reduced efficacy of current antibiotics. Today, AMR in bacteria and antibiotic-resistance genes (ARGs) are increasingly recognized in multiple environmental sources, including recreational and irrigation waters. This study aims to identify Gram-negative bacteria from surface aquatic reservoirs in southern Chile and assess their susceptibility to clinically relevant antibiotics. Water samples were collected from four lakes, five rivers, one waterfall, and one watershed in southern Chile to isolate environmental Gram-negative bacilli (GNB). API-20E and MALDI–TOF were employed for bacterial identification. Kirby–Bauer disc diffusion tests and multiplex PCR were performed to determine their susceptibility profile. A total of 26 GNB strains were isolated from environmental water samples, predominantly belonging to the Pseudomonas (n = 9) and Acinetobacter (n = 7) genera. Among these strains, 96.2% were resistant to ampicillin and cefazoline, while 26.9% and 34.6% showed resistance to ceftazidime and cefepime, respectively. Additionally, 38.5% exhibited resistance to colistin. Two Enterobacter cloacae strains obtained from Cachapoal River (sixth region) and Villarrica Lake (ninth region), respectively, presented a multidrug-resistant (MDR) phenotype and carried at least two extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) genes. Thus, antibiotic-resistant GNB and ARGs were found in natural water reservoirs, raising concerns about the dissemination of resistance determinants among potentially pathogenic bacteria in environmental microbial communities.

Water molecules pose a significant obstacle to conventional adhesive materials. Nevertheless, some marine organisms can secrete bioadhesives with remarkable adhesion properties. For instance, mussels resist sea waves using byssal threads, sandcastle worms secrete sandcastle glue to construct shelters, and barnacles adhere to various surfaces using their barnacle cement. This work initially elucidates the process of underwater adhesion and the microstructure of bioadhesives in these three exemplary marine organisms. The formation of bioadhesive microstructures is intimately related to the aquatic environment. Subsequently, the adhesion mechanisms employed by mussel byssal threads, sandcastle glue, and barnacle cement are demonstrated at the molecular level. The comprehension of adhesion mechanisms has promoted various biomimetic adhesive systems: DOPA-based biomimetic adhesives inspired by the chemical composition of mussel byssal proteins; polyelectrolyte hydrogels enlightened by sandcastle glue and phase transitions; and novel biomimetic adhesives derived from the multiple interactions and nanofiber-like structures within barnacle cement. Underwater biomimetic adhesion continues to encounter multifaceted challenges despite notable advancements. Hence, this work examines the current challenges confronting underwater biomimetic adhesion in the last part, which provides novel perspectives and directions for future research.

Antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARB) in aquatic environments is attracting increasing attention. However, the spread of ARB along Perfume River in Hue City is poorly understood. This study aimed to phenotypically and genotypically characterize β-lactam- and fluoroquinolone-resistant Escherichia coli isolates from this river. Water samples were collected from the urban, rural, agricultural, and less-affected areas in March 2020. E. coli susceptibility to seven commonly employed antibiotics was analyzed using the disk diffusion method, and the antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), qnrA, qnrB, qnrS, TEM, SHV, and CTX-M, were identified using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and DNA sequencing. The antibiotic susceptibility patterns of E. coli revealed that the rate of amoxicillin resistance was the highest (60%). PCR assays and sequencing of 12 β-lactam-resistant E. coli isolates indicated the presence of blaTEM and blaCTX-M-15 in 58.3% and 16.7% of the isolates, respectively. Only one of four fluoroquinolon -resistant E. coli isolates harbored the qnrS, while qnrA or qnrB genes were not detected. These findings suggest that this water may be an essential source of transmissible ARGs in Hue City, which may have a detrimental impact on the people living in this area.

Freshwater aquatic environments provide humanity with a wide range of resources and contribute to biodiversity and ecological balance. Brazil has one of the largest freshwater reserves in the world; however, residue from industrialization and urbanization, especially toxic metals that can bioaccumulate in organisms, reduces water quality. An effective strategy for assessing toxic metal presence in aquatic ecosystems involves examining their bioaccumulation in fish, encompassing both field (natural environment) and experimental investigations. Therefore, this comprehensive literature review encompasses an analysis of studies pertaining to the bioaccumulation of toxic metals in freshwater fish within the Brazilian context. Articles indexed in the Scopus and Science Direct databases, published between 2015 and 2022, were scrutinized. The bioaccumulation of metals in fish presented several applications such as evaluating the contamination of an environment, estimating consequences on zootechnical and reproductive performance, investigating the influence of abiotic and biotic factors, describing interactions with other substances, and verifying the effects of effluents from industrialization, urbanization, agriculture, and mining. The review revealed several research applications related to the topic, identified studies in which the concentration of toxic metals in fish was above the limit of Brazilian legislation, and detected gaps in the research such as the absence of analysis of skin and bone, low frequency of research into diet as the route of exposure to toxins, and a low analysis of three environmental matrices in research carried out in the natural environment. Waterpipe tobacco wastes (WTWs) may contain considerable levels of hazardous contaminants such as BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o-xylene, and m/p-xylene). However, no research has been carried out on BTEX levels in WTWs and the release of these pollutants into the water environment. This research examined the levels of BTEX in WTWs of flavored/local tobacco and also the release rate of these toxins into three kinds of water, including seawater (SW), tap water (TW), and distilled water (DW) with different leaching times (15, 30 min, 1.2, 4, 8 h, and 1, 2, and 4 days). The mean contents of BTEX in WTW samples of Al-Mahmoud, Al-Fakher, Mazaya, Al-Ayan brands, and local tobacco samples were 17.0 ± 4.14, 19.1 ± 4.65, 19.6 ± 4.19, 18.8 ± 4.14, and 3.16 ± 0.63 μg/kg, respectively. Fipronil (FIP) is a phenylpyrazole insecticide that, along with neonicotinoid insecticides, is regularly used worldwide. Photodegradation of FIP in aqueous systems is thought mainly to involve the reaction of desulfinylation to give fipronil desulfinyl (FIP-desulfinyl); however, little is known about further degradation reactions. We investigated FIP photodegradation by analyzing photodegradation products by liquid chromatography and liquid chromatography high-resolution tandem mass spectrometry using an Orbitrap instrument. A wide range of products, including dechlorinated compounds, was detected, and the structures were identified. FIP-desulfinyl has previously been found to be an important and persistent FIP photodegradation product; however, we also found that FIP-desulfinyl was photochemically decomposed to a didechlorinated product via a monodechlorinated product. The main photodegradation pathway was probably similar to that of ethiprole, which has a similar skeleton. The photodegradation rate constant was 22.6 times lower for FIP-desulfinyl (0.00372 min−1) than FIP (0.0839 min−1). The photodegradation rate constant was lower for the newly found didechlorinated product (0.001 min−1 or below) than FIP-desulfinyl, suggesting that the product is persistent in aquatic environments and could be an important indicator of long-term FIP contamination. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the efficiency of advanced oxidation processes (electrochemical, Fenton, and electro-Fenton) in the removal of oxytetracycline antibiotic from aquatic environments using SS316 and SS316/β-PbO2 anodes. This study was performed experimentally on a laboratory scale in a 250-mL reactor. First, experiments were designed for the electrochemical process using a central composite design (CCD), and the optimal conditions for the variables pH (3.53), current density (3.85 mA/cm2), initial concentration of oxytetracycline (20 mg/L), and electrolysis time (42.35 min) were obtained; then, under these conditions, the efficiency of Fenton process with FeSO4 variable without the presence of electrodes was evaluated, and its optimal value was 0.3 g/L, and then in the presence of optimal values ​of the above four variables, the efficiency of the electro-Fenton process with H2O2 changes was investigated and the optimal value of 0.12 mg/L was obtained for H2O2. The removal efficiencies of oxytetracycline in electrochemical, Fenton, and electro-Fenton processes were 84.7%, 73.4%, and 98.2%, respectively. Under optimal conditions, the SS316/β-PbO2 anode electrode enhanced the oxytetracycline efficiency by electro-Fenton process to 100%. The results of bioassay with microorganisms showed that the reduction of toxicity of the effluent treated by the electro-Fenton process for Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus was 84.5% and 69%, respectively. The biogeochemical cycling of mercury in aquatic environments is a complex process driven by various factors, such as ambient temperature, seasonal variations, methylating bacteria activity, dissolved oxygen levels, and Hg interaction with dissolved organic matter (DOM). As a consequence, part of the Hg contamination from anthropogenic activity that was buried in sediments is reinserted into water columns mainly in highly toxic organic Hg forms (methylmercury, dimethylmercury, etc.). This is especially prominent in the coastal shallow waters of industrial regions worldwide. The main entrance point of these highly toxic Hg forms in the aquatic food web is the naturally occurring phytoplankton. Hg availability, intake, effect on population size, cell toxicity, eventual biotransformation, and intracellular stability in phytoplankton are of the greatest importance for human health, having in mind that such Hg incorporated inside the phytoplankton cells due to biomagnification effects eventually ends up in aquatic wildlife, fish, seafood, and in the human diet. This review summarizes recent findings on the topic of organic Hg form interaction with natural phytoplankton and offers new insight into the matter with possible directions of future research for the prevention of Hg biomagnification in the scope of climate change and global pollution increase scenarios. Once released into the environment, engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) undergo complex interactions and transformations that determine their fate, exposure concentration, form, and likely impact on biota. Transformations are physical, chemical, or biological changes that occur to the ENM or the ENM coating. Over time, these transformations have an impact on their behaviour and properties. The interactions and transformations of ENMs in the environment depend on their pristine physical and chemical characteristics and the environmental or biological compartment into which they are released. The uniqueness of each ENM property or lifecycle results in a great deal of complexity. Even small changes may have a significant impact on their potential transformations. This review outlines the key influences and outcomes of ENM evolution pathways in aquatic environments and provides an assessment of potential environmental transformations, focusing on key chemical, physical, and biological processes. By obtaining a comprehensive understanding of the potential environmental transformations that nanomaterials can undergo, more realistic models of their probable environmental behaviour and potential impact can be developed. We are living in a time of rapid biodiversity loss. Numerous studies have shown that modern extinction rates are higher than pre-human background rates. However, these studies of biodiversity decline almost exclusively focus on large vertebrates. The scientific community lacks the sufficient long-term records necessary to track biodiversity loss for many invertebrate taxa. However, aquatic, benthic, and skeletonized invertebrates have the advantage of leaving a long-term record that can readily be sampled in conjunction with living communities because the mineralized skeletons accumulate in the very same sediments in which the animals that produced them once lived. These not-quite-fossil "death assemblages" contain an underutilized record for long-term monitoring. Here, we leverage three case studies of calcareous micro- and macro-faunal remains from three aquatic environments spanning two gradients: freshwater to fully marine and polluted to pristine and remediated. We compared the death assemblages to living assemblages in these case studies using Spearman's rho and the Jaccard–Chao agreement to determine the degree of fidelity. Death assemblages of lacustrine, calcareous microcrustaceans (Ostracoda), collected from lakes in The Bahamas and Wisconsin, USA, faithfully record human impacts, both for degradation and remediation, as determined by a mismatch in the live–dead comparisons. Likewise, the live–dead comparisons of calcareous marine macrofauna (Bivalvia) from the southern California shelf also indicate human impact, including pollution and remediation. These case studies demonstrate how death assemblages can be used to gauge the changes in community assembly and population structures at local and regional scales, even in the absence of a systemic monitoring program. Conservation, restoration, and biomonitoring efforts would benefit from the inclusion of live–dead comparisons of taxa with easily fossilized, identifiable parts. Live–dead studies, such as those presented in these case studies, can be used as tools for recognizing targets and establishing baselines for conservation, tracking community responses to remediation efforts, and identifying local species extinctions. Production of the beta-lactamase enzymes is the primary resistance mechanism caused by unconcious consumption of the beta-lactam group of antibiotics in Enterobacteriaceae. Combined disc tests were performed for extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) confirmation (n = 15) and class C beta-lactamase (AmpC) confirmation (n = 6) after the disc diffusion test was applied in a total of 27 Enterobacteriaceae strains from Western Black Sea, Lake Manyas and Lake Iznik. Plasmid-mediated blaTEM, blaSHV, blaCTX-M , blaIMP genes, CIT, MOX, FOX gene groups and chromosomal blaAmpc gene of E. cloacae were investigated using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Three E. coli strains were shown to produce ESBL, while one E.coli and three E. cloacae strains were confirmed for AmpC production by disc tests. blaTEM (n = 2), blaSHV (n = 4), blaCTX-M (n = 2), blaTEM + blaSHV (n = 1), blaCTX-M + CIT (n = 1), blaSHV + CIT (n = 1) genes and/or gene groups were detected in 11 E. coli isolates; while blaSHV (n = 3) was observed in three Klebsiella strains (two K. oxytoca and one K. pneumoniae). With this study, the aquatic environments of Turkey were proved to be the reservoirs of antibiotic-resistance determinants of plasmid-mediated beta-lactamases in environmental wild-type bacteria transmitted by horizontal gene transfer. La gestion des milieux aquatiques connait des évolutions importantes marquées par des ruptures législatives continues. En particulier, la préservation des milieux aquatiques est aujourd'hui élargie aux politiques foncières et ce en complément de la politique de l'eau. Cependant, peu d'études se sont intéressées à la place que prennent les interventions foncières dans la gestion de ces milieux. C'est ce que se propose de faire cet article en analysant les processus d'apprentissage social dans lesquels se sont engagés les acteurs locaux pour s'approprier la composante foncière de la gestion des milieux aquatiques dans le département de l'Isère. Nos résultats montrent que de nouveaux partenariats visant la maîtrise de l'usage du foncier s'établissent et permettent d'ancrer la gestion des milieux aquatiques dans un projet de territoire plus intégré. Ces nouveaux partenariats fonciers participent à complexifier le paysage institutionnel de la gestion des milieux aquatiques, rentrant dès lors en tension avec le souhait du législateur d'en simplifier le paysage. The management of aquatic environments undergoes significant changes marked by continuous legislative changes. Specifically, the preservation of aquatic environments is no longer the sole responsibility of water policies, but is extended to land policies. However, little is known on the integration of land policies in the management of aquatic environments. This article analyzes the social learning processes in land governance for the preservation of aquatic environments in the Isere department. Our results show that new partnerships aiming land uses regulation are emerging. They contribute to complexify the institutional landscape of the management of aquatic environments, thus coming into tension with the desire of the legislator to simplify this landscape. Microplastics are considered the major pollutant of the Anthropocene. This study presents a retrospective examination of the literature to characterize microplastic research in marine and freshwater habitats and to explore the interconnections among the topics uncovered. After automated text mining, topic modeling was carried out to track the evolution of research topics in peer-reviewed articles on microplastics published from January 2010 to May 2021. The literature analysis suggested a total of 15 topics. The most representative terms in topics related exclusively to marine habitats were similar and differed from those in the topics related to both marine and freshwater habitats. The observed patterns in the popularity of the topics uncovered suggest that several topics have tended to increase in prevalence over time. However, no topic had high popularity, and only two topics were considered "cold," i.e., there was a drop in prevalence over time. The topics that had the largest research gaps on average across all topics were also among the most specific, those describing the key themes of certain manuscripts. This type of literature analysis is increasingly necessary so that the scientific knowledge available can be useful in the search for solutions to the environmental problems of today's society. Aeromonas species are bacterial pathogens that cause significant economic losses in the aquaculture industry worldwide. They are widely distributed in aquatic environments and cause several diseases in both humans and aquatic animals. The presence of various virulent Aeromonas spp. in aquatic environments predisposes infections in aquatic animals and humans. Concern about the transfer of pathogens from fish to humans also increased with the substantial increase in seafood consumption. Aeromonas spp. are also primary human pathogens that cause local and systemic infections, both in immunologically compromised and immunologically competent hosts. The most common Aeromonas spp. causing infections in aquatic animals and humans are A. hydrophila, A. salmonicida, A. caviae , and A. vero nii biotype sobria. The ability of Aeromonas spp. to produce a variety of virulence factors enhances their pathogenic ability. Literature has supplied evidence for the presence of various virulence factors, including proteases, enterotoxins, hemolysin, and toxin genes of Aeromonas spp. in aquatic environments. The high prevalence of Aeromonas spp. in the aquatic environment is also a threat to public health. Because the Aeromonas spp. infections in humans are generally the result of ingestion or exposure to contaminated food and water. This review summarizes the recently published information on various virulence factors and virulence genes of Aeromonas spp. isolated from various aquatic environments, including seawater, freshwater, wastewater, and drinking water. The interchangeability of terms, such as "water toxicology" and "eco-toxicology," is explored, with a focus on key concepts and the contributions of notable researchers. Despite limitations in comprehensive coverage, the article highlights the ongoing relevance of water toxicology challenges and future directions in water eco-toxicology research.

Polypropylene microplastics are the leading contaminant in aquatic environments, although research on their toxicity remains scarce. The proposed research focuses on the harmful consequences of acute exposure to polypropylene microplastics in Daphnia similis. This work converts widely available polypropylene bags into microplastics using xylene. FTIR findings demonstrated the lack of xylene residue in the produced polypropylene microplastic particles, which were spherical and ranged in size from 11.86 to 44.62 µm (FE-SEM). The results indicate that acute exposure to polypropylene microplastics causes immobility in D. similis. Ingestion of microplastics enhances the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), as shown by biochemical studies. Due to the production of free radicals in D. similis, the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and a non-antioxidant enzyme of reduced glutathione (GSH) and also oxidative stress effects in lipid (lipid peroxidation — LPO), protein (carbonyl protein — CP) were increased. Additionally, the amount of the neurotransmitter enzyme acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity was decreased.
