This paper discusses the results of a study that focuses on the human and financial costs of justice for those who are injured at or made ill by work. The results presented here are based on a qualitative field study which began in September 2018. Three elements that arose from the appeal process are discussed in light of the tangible and intangible costs of justice: the medicalization of the process and the delays and complexity of the judicial process. These elements are likely to influence the costs incurred by injured workers and pose specific challenges, particularly in terms of the quest for a medical expert and access to expert legal support. We end this paper with a discussion that highlights how the appeal process itself can be conceived as an additional layer of vulnerability that ultimately creates a form of precariousness.

One of the most important institutions designed to guarantee the reality of rights granted to convicts is the right of appeal, in Article 6 of the Criminal Enforcement Code. Appeals submitted by convicts are often perceived as an expression of their attitude of entitlement and an instrument for paralysing the administration. This is one of the reasons why the legislator introduced conditions into Article 6 (2, 3) of the Criminal Enforcement Code, restricting the right of appeal. These limitations should be acknowledged as incompatible with Article 63 of the Constitution as well as European and international standards.

The Social Security Administration (SSA) administers two programs that provide benefits based on disability: the Social Security Disability Insurance program and the Supplemental Security Income program. Successfully applying for disability benefits, and appealing a denial of benefits, require familiarity with the complex rules SSA uses in making determinations. It is advisable--in some cases, vital--to have during the appeal process a knowledgeable representative who can most favorably present the claim, so the claimant can qualify for and maintain disability benefits. Objective: to prove the importance of simplified appeal procedure in achieving the goals of justice.Methods: a number of general scientific and specific methods were used. Special methods included legal interpretation, historical, comparative- legal, systemic and other methods of scientific cognition.Results: the paper analyzes foreign legislation and practice of the European court of Human Rights on simplification of judicial act checking procedures. The simplified appeal process is aimed at reducing the case load on judges of second instance, guaranteeing the realization of the right to appeal, reducing of terms of consideration of the appeal complaints and speeding up the entry of court decision into legal force. Appeal processes provide important opportunities to challenge administrative decisions, but adjudicators often lack access to information relevant to the disputed claim. This article examines the motivations for property tax assessment appeals as well as the factors that influence the decision to grant or deny these appeals. We ask whether and how the relative lack of comparable sales in a neighborhood influences the frequency of property assessment appeal applications and their likelihood of success. Using a data set of appeal applications submitted to the first two levels of assessment review in Chicago in 2000 and 2003, we estimate the probability of successful appeal for residential property owners using a sequential probit model. We find that information-rich environments have the potential to both temper the perception of individual mistreatment and improve the quality of assessor decision making. While a key function of contracts is to provide incentives, the incentives of judges to enforce the terms of a contract have rarely been examined. This paper develops a simple model of judicial agency in which judges are corrupt and can be bribed by contracting parties. Higher-powered contracts expose contracting parties to more frequent and more severe corruption, which in turn lessens the incentives actually provided by the contract. Consequently the model predicts that individuals will commonly refrain from writing high-powered contracts, even when such contracts would be valuable absent judicial agency. I show that similar implications can also be obtained by considering other forms of imperfection in contract enforcement, such as variable expenditures on legal representation. I use the model to develop implications for the optimal punishment of individuals who are extorted by corrupt judges, and to establish circumstances under which a right-of-appeal is optimal. This article provides an overview of the various forms of appeal which are available within the English legal system. It discusses why appeals are necessary, what form they take and some of the fundamental aspects of the legal structures and principles which are applied by the judges. The criminal and civil appeal systems are separately outlined and the discretionary nature of further appeals explained. The place of statutory appeals from regulatory bodies is briefly indicated. This article looks at the new Supreme Court. It explains why the judicial House of Lords was replaced by the new Court and how the Court operates. It also explores whether the change of name also involves a change in either the jurisdiction of the court, or its role within the United Kingdom's constitutional arrangements, particularly the relationship between the Judiciary and the other organs of the state, i.e. Parliament and the Executive.
