This study aims to develop knowledge about how 'the Deviant' is produced through identificatory mapping materials that operate in Swedish preschools. This is achieved by identifying and critically reviewing a base of mapping materials commonly used in Swedish ECEC today, focusing on how the documents per se, and the formulations therein, risk pointing both the writer and the recipient in certain directions. This includes analysing the pre-existing structure and content as well as the proposed purpose of the mapping material. Drawing on Foucault, I consider documentation as a productive discursive element in a larger apparatus, where the mapping materials operate as a governing technology for making normalising judgments. The analysis contributes to an understanding of the documentality governing ECEC professionals, which affects how they resonate, and act in aiming to fulfil their mission in identifying certain children. In line with this reasoning, I also point out the specific status the documents have gained in the global ECEC quality discourse. The analysis shows how mapping documents named Pedagogical Mapping operate as a discursive element of the apparatus of early childhood special education identification processes and become fruitful for visibilising, comparing, and assessing the child and for further governing. Background: Occlusal contacts can be stained and thereby visualised employing occlusal indicators. Qualitative and quantitative indicators are differentiated. The hybrid system OccluSense supposedly combines analogue contact marking and digital registration of contacts. The reliability and validity of its contact marking have not yet been validated. Objectives: The aim of this controlled randomised in‐vitro study was to examine the reliability and validity of analogue contact staining with OccluSense compared to Arti‐Fol and the reference standard Gnatho‐Film. Materials and Methods: An experimental apparatus was designed to simulate static occlusion. The occlusal contacts were stained 50 times with Gnatho‐Film to determine the average number and location of contacts registered. For comparison, the contacts were pre‐stained with Gnatho‐Film and then registered with Arti‐Fol or OccluSense 50 times each. Every staining was statistically evaluated and compared to Gnatho‐Film alone, regarding the number and location of contacts. Based on the observed characteristic staining behaviour of OccluSense, a modified evaluation strategy was developed for its colour markings (OccluSense (mod.)). Results: Both evaluations of OccluSense determine that the same number of contacts was registered in over 94% of all cases. Neither OccluSense nor Arti‐Fol stain the exact same number of contacts as Gnatho‐Film, but the modified evaluation OccluSense (mod.) did improve the results for validity. Conclusion: When employing the modified evaluation strategy, OccluSense staining achieves similar reliability and validity as the reference standard. Pre‐colouring of occlusal contacts with Gnatho‐Film and the modified evaluation strategy, might become standard for analysing occlusal contacts stained by OccluSense in the future. Abstract As sustainability scientists increasingly put forward the relevance of process‐relational approaches to make sense of social‐ecological phenomena, an inquiry on which methods would fit a process‐relational approach is necessary. This paper discusses how a process‐relational approach can be applied to traditional qualitative research methods, namely interviews and coding and the tensions associated with it. Process‐relational perspectives share commonalities with interpretative approaches but also present specific characteristics, such as the importance of material aspects and the understanding of the phenomenon as a moment in which different elements become defined respective to each other. The paper uses data and researchers' experiences from an action research project seeking to support collective action among coastal communities affected by environmental changes in Kenya and Mozambique. Active, real-time observation of behavior is a time-consuming task, which is heavily resource-limited. At the same time, simultaneous observation of several individuals is often paramount to increase statistical rigor and eliminate potential temporal or environmental bias, especially in natural settings. This paper describes a low-cost video recording system created by using “off-the-shelf” components. The system is easy to use and can automatically record a wide variety of behavior and related ecological interactions and evolutionary processes. The system is sensitive enough to record the behavior of a broad range of animals from planarians, and small insects to humans. It can also be used to measure the behavior of plants. The system will also work during daylight hours or at night and can run continuously and autonomously for 48 hours, or longer if the video capture is motion-triggered or if bigger capacity batteries and data storage facilities are used.

Catalogues of medical and surgical equipment are a useful source for the social and cultural history of medicine. In particular, they provide data that can be used to examine healthcare systems and practices over a long period of time. Based on a corpus of contemporary catalogues from European manufacturers of gynaecological chairs, and focusing in particular on their visual content, this article aims to show the value of such sources for documenting the changes made to the gynaecological chair. The article also proposes to analyse the representations of objects, spaces, and care relationships as part of a gynaecological apparatus. It highlights the panoptic control and surveillance exercised over women's bodies by this apparatus. In the way it stages doctor-patient interactions, and in the absence of male bodies in the proctology and urology chairs, this apparatus appears to be a technology of gender.

Introduction: Implantable permanent pacemaker function is supported by their energy sources for a mean period of 8.8–12.4 years. We previously published this case of a patient with a normally functioning VVI pacemaker, 31 years after implantation. Methods and Results: In this report, we state that the device is still functioning normally 40 years after implantation. The most recent device interrogation revealed pacing threshold of 0.9 V/0.5 ms. Holter monitoring for 24 hours recorded a total of 98.707 beats with 97.78% paced beats, without any indication of pacemaker malfunction and with stable heart rate at 70–71 bpm. Conclusion: Most patients with implantable devices have the appropriate follow‐up and settings of low energy consumption. Manufacturing companies should focus on prolonging device longevity, to produce future devices with higher energy capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article empirically maps and compares types of knowledge produced about people on the move by the European border security apparatus. Exploring two complementary analytical moments, the article addresses the stabilization of power and contingent practices within such apparatuses. We argue, first, that analyzing classification schemas implemented in data systems used within the European apparatus can reveal assumptions and limitations about people on the move—what we call "scripts of alterity." Second, the comparative mapping of scripts of alterity reveals a de facto division of labor between scales of governance that would otherwise be invisible in policy. Utilizing the new Ontology Explorer software method as well as discursive analysis, we identify four scripts of alterity, which materialize relations in data systems and are thus relatively stabilized. Third, we identify as "de-inscriptions" forms of resistance specific to scripts of alterity. These can still be contested and we account for three contingent practices of de-inscription from scripts of alterity by conducting ethnographic observation of data systems' use. Finally, we summarize three contributions that the "scripts of alterity" concept makes to the science and technology studies and to the critical security studies literature on the securitization of cross-border mobility. Postoperative peritoneal adhesion (PPA) is the most frequent complication after abdominal surgery. Current anti‐adhesion strategies largely rely on the use of physical separating barriers creating an interface blocking peritoneal adhesion, which cannot reduce inflammation and suffers from limited anti‐adhesion efficacy with unwanted side effects. Here, by exploiting the alternative activated macrophages to alleviate inflammation in adhesion development, a flexible graphene‐composite‐film (F‐GCF) generating far‐infrared (FIR) irradiation that effectively modulates the macrophage phenotype toward the anti‐inflammatory M2 type, resulting in reduced PPA formation, is designed. The anti‐adhesion effect of the FIR generated by F‐GCF is determined in the rat abdominal wall abrasion‐cecum defect models, which exhibit reduced incidence and area of PPA by 67.0% and 92.1% after FIR treatment without skin damage, significantly superior to the clinically used chitosan hydrogel. Notably, within peritoneal macrophages, FIR reduces inflammation reaction and promotes tissue plasminogen activator (t‐PA) level via the polarization of peritoneal macrophages through upregulating Nr4a2 expression. To facilitate clinical use, a wirelessly controlled, wearable, F‐GCF‐based FIR therapy apparatus (GRAFT) is further developed and its remarkable anti‐adhesion ability in the porcine PPA model is revealed. Over the past decades, a new field of research related to microplastics has emerged which still faces a high degree of uncertainty and conflicting views regarding the risks posed by microplastics. To date, social research has not addressed the regulatory science practices necessary for assessing the risks created by microplastics and related ethical questions. Therefore, the objective of this article is to analyse the role of central regulatory science practices, that is, risk assessments as they relate to microplastics. I draw on the work of Karen Barad to conceptualise these regulatory science practices as boundary-drawing practices which produce agential cuts. I will show that scientific and regulatory boundary-drawing practices draw agential cuts determining the properties of microplastics and regulatory actions that have 'real' consequences for human and environmental health. My empirical case demonstrates that different versions of risk assessment exist – one based on thresholds and the other on persistence – each of which have different regulatory consequences. Threshold risk assessment does not legitimise action to regulate microplastics, because the threshold at which microplastics have toxic effects requires such high concentrations that industry could continue to emit microplastics for decades. Therefore, only risk assessments that relate to the materiality of microplastics in terms of persistence and accumulation legitimise regulatory action. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Green chemistry aims at replacing toxic solvents by safer solvents such as supercritical carbon dioxide (scCO2), which displays zero surface tension, outstanding transport properties, high diffusivity, and tuned solubilization by changing the pressure and temperature, or adding cosolvents. Nonetheless, the practical application of scCO2-based technologies under supercritical conditions requires sophisticated systems for optimal operation. Here, we review scCO2-based systems with focus on dyeing, extraction, chromatographic, and cleaning systems. All scCO2-based systems consist of a CO2 supply and pump part, a cosolvent providing part, and a parameters controlling part, yet there are different reaction vessels depending on solute types and practical functions. Developing more normalized, intelligentized, and durable scCO2-based systems should render the scCO2-based technologies be more economic, controllable, flexible, and suitable for wider applications. In this article, we want to think about the concept of desire in the philosophy of Deleuze and Guattari, and through it, to understand Deleuze's ontology of the concept of "event". In formulating the concept of "desire", they are looking for an answer to the problem of the chaotic world of contemporary man. A world where for its resilience contemporary man seeks refuge in all kinds of ways of escape. Deleuze and Guattari create a new conceptual system centered on the concept of "desire" in order to answer the why of this situation and draw ways to avoid it. In this text, we tried to analyze the concept of desire from their point of view in connection with the concept of "Apparatus" by Foucault-Agamben and Finally, we should approach a new understanding of the concept of the event as its escape from the relativistic postmodern challenge. Footwear stiffness affects kinematics and kinetic of the foot. This research is focused on footwear bending stiffness measurement methods that affect athletes' performance. The influence of shoe bending stiffness on different movements; sprinting, running, jumping, etc was explained. Two different measurement methods; mechanical tests such as two and three-point bending machines and kinematic measurement methods using motion capture cameras were studied, and their limitations and effects on a variety of performances were presented. In mechanical tests, the most common method was the three-point bend test in which the footwear was analysed while carbon-fibre plates were added to increase the footwear stiffness. In kinematic measurements, attaching markers on the foot-shoe was analysed and the results presented discrepancies among studies. It was challenging to draw strong conclusions in choosing the best approach to measuring footwear stiffness as the methods' protocols varied among studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates the material complexity and relational emergence of 'teaching'. Reporting on a video-based ethnographic study of an upper secondary classroom in Norway, the paper centres on the following research questions: Which material-discursive practices 'matter' in upper secondary teaching situations, and how are participants' bodies shaping and being shaped by these practices? The paper combines sociomaterial practice theory with the agential realist concepts of material-discursivity and apparatus to trace the spatial and bodily enactment of a teaching situation. In the first part of the paper, I identify two material-discursive practices: the practice of tasks and the practice of friendship. Second, I examine the two practices' material intertwinement, proposing that they entangle and coarticulate a larger material arrangement termed the teaching apparatus that regulates the possibilities and limitations for 'doing' in the classroom. The paper offers a perspective on teaching that increases our awareness of its interconnectedness and unpredictability, allowing for a more fine-grained understanding of the embodied liveliness and material complexity of everyday teaching encounters. Finally, I propose that thinking with a spatially, bodily and relationally produced teaching apparatus offers an affirmative and agential approach to discussing educational quality. The order Apochela, the only exclusively carnivorous tardigrade lineage, comprises four genera, of which Milnesium contains multiple species and is common and cosmopolitan, whereas the remaining genera (Bergtrollus , Limmenius and Milnesioides) are monotypic, rare and have restricted geographical distributions. More importantly, although there are ample genetic data for numerous Milnesium species, no other apochelan genus has been sequenced so far, which limits our understanding of milnesiid evolution. In this contribution, we analysed two populations of Milnesioides from the south coast of Western Australia. The obtained molecular phylogenetic tree clearly indicated Milnesioides as a sister lineage to all remaining Milnesium species, supporting the validity of the genus. Moreover, the sister relationship of Milnesioides and Milnesium lends support to the Gondwanan origin of the order Apochela. Phenotypic differences between the type population of Milnesioides exsertum from New South Wales and the populations from Western Australia analysed in this study suggest that the latter represent a new species. The new data and morphological differences between populations reported in the original description of Milnesioides strongly suggest that the genus is not monotypic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article aims to explore the discourse construction through the institutional apparatus and technologies within Pyhä-Luosto National Park, one of the first two national parks established in Finland, by analysing visitors’ reviews. This article investigates the causes behind the differing levels of emphasis that tourists of various languages (Finnish and other languages) and cultural backgrounds place on environmental values or physical activities during their visits. By employing a mixed-methods approach, merging quantitative (frequency analysis) and qualitative (discourse analysis) methodologies, the analysis reveals a distinct divergence in the visitor experiences of the national park based on the background of visitors. Finnish-speaking visitors exhibit a stronger preference for landscape, while international visitors emphasize the experiences derived from physical activities. Through a closer field study in PyhäLuosto National Park, it is proposed that these differences originate from distinct cultural contexts and environmental engagements that shape each visitor’s interaction with the natural landscape. Thermal conductivity is the amount of heat that can be passed through or conducted by any material. Evaluating the thermal conductivity of insulators is critical for many applications. The available thermal conductivity apparatuses are expensive, time-consuming, and tedious to operate. With the advent of nanotechnology, there is a tremendous increase in the research and development of new insulating materials to be used for various applications. So, there is an urgent need to develop a portable, simple, and cost-effective apparatus that can be used in research laboratories to measure the thermal conductivity of newly developed insulating materials. In this regard, a portable and cost-effective thermal conductivity apparatus has been indigenously developed in the laboratory. The apparatus has been used to measure the thermal conductivity of insulating slabs. The values obtained from the apparatus have been verified with known material and found to be in broad agreement with the value available in the literature. The results obtained have been deployed onto the cloud in real-time using the Internet of Things platform. A plot of the thermal conductivity of the insulating slab at different temperatures has been displayed in the cloud. It can be concluded that the developed apparatus can be used to measure the thermal conductivity of any insulating slab with reasonable accuracy. Furthermore, this apparatus gives the same accuracy for measuring the thermal conductivity of metals as long as their dimensions are known, such as metallic bars or slabs. The thermal conductivity of the metals is compared to the standard values and this can determine their purity and if composites such as nanomaterials have been added. The Swedish contract archaeology (CA) system has witnessed changes and new goals in the last couple of decades, becoming more steered by the market while new demands have come from Swedish cultural heritage legislation and policies for producing relevant knowledge to society and widening the inclusion of the public. In this paper I examine the Swedish CA system and programs from its three main parties, according to critical heritage studies by Rodney Harrison, especially focusing on the governing tool ‘apparatus’. Criticism, conveyed for instance in a recent survey, has claimed that the apparatus of Swedish CA is unsustainable and inefficient in its present form. This includes deficiencies in the relationships between the parties and with actors and stakeholders outside the system. There is also a democratic discrepancy towards the new heritage goals. I suggest that Harrisons critical view on heritage could be used to argue for changes in the role and boundaries of Swedish CA, taking into accord the conditions of local contexts, interests and needs of communities. An active stance for a more dialogical and inclusive nature of communication could diminish the risk for dissonance, conflict, and negative impacts while creating conditions for positive outcomes and values in society.

Abstract. Bulgaria is known for its essential oils and medicinal plants, which occupy increasing parts in the agricultural areas. In recent years, the boom in lavender production has made our country the largest producer of lavender oil in the world. This intensified the scientific work with it and led to the creation of new lavender varieties and lines that are used in production. All research and tests on an industrial scale go through the laboratory distillation of small amounts of plant material to determine the quantity and quality of essential oil. In laboratory practice, micro-apparatus for water distillation is widely used, which does not reflect the real results for the yield and quality of the product. This necessitated the creation of a new laboratory device for determining the content of essential oil in raw materials with labile (rich in esters) oil by the application of steam distillation. The design of this apparatus mirrors industrial installations, thus the results it produces accurately simulate those of industrial production. Tests with herbal raw materials, like Lavandula angustifolia Mill., Salva sclarea L. and Helichrysum italicum (Roth) G. Don showed that the model is effective and applicable. The oils obtained by the new apparatus retained an ester content of 40.2%, 75.0% and 4.8%, respectively; these figures represent a significant improvement over previous methods.

The concept of verification is commonly associated with verifying sources in journalism, Open-Source Intelligence, digital forensics, and various digital research methods. In this context, I introduce 'media of verification' as an epistemological framework that encompasses a variety of practices. Through the examination of examples, I elaborate on four modalities: verification in media, apparatuses of verification, verification as consensus-making, and infrastructures of verification. Verification in media involves the pre-reportage verification of sources in journalism. Apparatuses of verification are devices designed to validate authenticity. Verification as consensus-making encompasses decision-making processes, such as negotiations, debt registers, and bookkeeping. Infrastructures of verification pertain to authentication media like certificates, batches, and other mechanisms ensuring the integrity of goods, documents, data, currencies, and sensitive information. I show that different phenomena, practices, and techniques bridging the digital and physical realms are indeed part of the same epistemological framework I call 'media of verification.'Note: Download statistics restarted from zero effective January 1, 2024. The introduction takes the EU AI Act as a recent contemporary example of 'media of verification' and gives a brief outline of the issue and a syllabus of the contributions.

J.M. Coetzee’s Dusklands overtly offers more of a novelistic discourse than a political pontification. It presents two narratives – one about Eugene Dawn, working for the US government agency in Vietnam in the twentieth centruy and the other moves around Jacobus Coetzee in the eighteenth century, representing a threat to the cultural integrity and undermining true African culture and traditionalism. In the postcolonial and postmodernist contexts, crony capitalism and neocolonial incursions move in the framework set by the power-structure, mostly controlled by the corporate economy. War, not only military but also psychological, even in the postcolonial situations, turns into a power game for the capitalist countries by exercising imperialist hegemony over the economically backward Third World countries while simultaneously maximizing their monetary interest. This potential disposition of the imperial enterprise questions the versions of historical truth, arbitrarily used for silencing and Othering. In Dusklands, Coetzee presents a critical assessment of historical truth inherent in power relations. In varied degrees, war affects both the target victims and the ethically lived soldiers who are forcibly appointed to cause physical and mental damage. Through the portrayal of America’s war in Vietnam in the first segment of Dusklands and Afrikaner’s colonial incursions in South Africa in the second segment of the same text, Coetzee questions the versions of historical truth. This paper examines how J.M.Coetzee exhibits the dialectical process of the construction of knowledge which works as a counter discourse to the power relations controlled by the capitalist forces assuming the role of the imperialist hegemony and, under the subterfuge of globalization and modernity, turning Africa into an endless source of raw materials for the manufacturing factories of the First World countries.

In the text, the author deals with extensive issues of media-politics relations. Using the conceptual apparatus developed by Vilém Flusser, he shows through specific examples (the Romanian revolution, the presidential elections in the United States) the transformations in the social imagination that have occurred as a result of technological changes – primarily the transition from “television reign” to “taking control” by the so-called new media. He also looks to the future, forecasting how an autonomous technology (e.g. artificial intelligence) may soon further complicate the social and political context of the contemporary times. The future of work is partially written in the organisation of the welfare state – particularly in social policies and practices which imagine a vibrant labour market with ever-more employment. Here, we offer a genealogy of the peculiar formulation of the term NEETs, 'Not in Employment, Education or Training' as emblematic of a deep cultural and organisational commitment to work. To understand this array of policies, we draw on the Foucauldian concept of the dispositif. We move between the authoritarian valency of the concept as used by Agamben, and the looser Deleuzian assemblage, to investigate the policy, discourses and material structures that guarantee the future of work. NEETS conceptually and practically narrows the broad liminal transition from adolescent to adult into a labour market transition – producing work-ready, employable subjects for any future. The future of work need not be NEETs, but to approach that future we need to attend to the overwhelming policy apparatus and assemblage that holds a post-work future at bay. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of the current work was to verify three-dimensional directional effects on the reproduction error precision of the human upper limb position. Thirty male subjects without history of upper limb pathology were recruited from Renmin University of China. A three-dimensional position reproduction task in six directions (up, down, left, right, far, and near) was performed by each subject. The results suggested that the proprioceptive sense of upper limb position depends on the direction, with smaller absolute errors in Directions 4 (right) and 5 (far) than in Directions 1 (up), 2 (down), 3 (left), and 6 (near). Proprioception near the end of the elbow joint range of motion may be more reliable and sensitive. Subjects reproduced fewer ranges in the horizontal plane (Directions 3, 5, and 6) and they overshot the target position along the z-axis (vertical direction) except for Direction 6. This article claims that the UK immigration complex is best understood as an apparatus (in the sense of Foucault and Agamben) that uses stress as a tool. It further argues that the Refugee Tales project acts as a counter-apparatus, and that the project’s life writing branch makes visible the many roles which stress plays in the context of immigration legislation. Stress researchers in the humanities maintain that poverty is one of the greatest stressors (Baker), that cutting people off from their material and mental resources is the most effective way to produce stress (Hobfoll), and that disturbing established rhythms of stress and relaxation can lead to ‘zombification’ (Korovkin/Stephenson). Selected pieces of life writing by women and men in the four volumes of Refugee Tales published to date, shed light on how stress manifests for people caught up in the immigration apparatus. They do so by demonstrating how narrative can i) be a source of stress, ii) trigger stress originally caused by something else, iii) represent stress, iv) perform, v) communicate, but also vi) alleviate it. By visibilizing what the immigration apparatus keeps from view, the analysed pieces of life writing contribute to Refugee Tales’ overall goal of putting an end to indefinite detention in the UK.

Archaeological excavations in Ramla, Jund Filastīn capital during the early Islamic period, discovered in a zone of artisans and workshops, a unique complex of built and dug installations. It included barely known and understood components of a proto-chemical toolkit. The finds included an abundance of small, decorated bottles previously identified as perfume containers. Additional small finds of a proto-chemistry toolkit included e.g., bronze pipettes, delicate bronze pestles and weights. The complex is to be associated with the existence of a facility differing from an alchemist studio-laboratory. It involved the commercial, non-artisan, pre-industrial production of perfumes and aromatic oils associated with body care chemistry. The close proximity to a Hammām (bathhouse) is notable. Suitable comparisons were found throughout the Mediterranean Basin, from Spain, where comparable tool kits in close proximity to Hammāms were discovered, to Russia, where similar technology and typology were documented. The article discusses the importance of the dictates of the Quran and Mohammedan traditions regarding purification of the body and their catalytic influence on social and early technological changes in a pre-industrial society. The analysis of the designs of electrochemical membrane apparatuses showed that a roll-type apparatus is promising, providing a large area of electrochemical membrane separation of the solution at a minimum area within the facility. Attention, as sustained thoughtful focus, differs from distraction solely in view of the deliberated object's social value. Social risks and contradictions, typically regarded as a collective concern, have colonised privacy through processes of individualization and are nowadays considered exclusively from individual's positions – attention aimed inwards as an outside distraction. Coincidentally, in this era of "the attention/distraction economy," what we socially evaluate as distraction is extremely profitable for perpetuating the system and respective capital. Individual('s) guilt while serving the aforementioned purpose, reinforces the perception of individual responsibility and steers the(ir) focus towards strengthening personal discipline and continuously upgrading one's biography. In women's artistic gymnastics, difficult elements with great flight heights have to be performed on the apparatuses. However, the importance of the physical condition for generating flight height and its development with age remains elusive. Therefore, we investigated the age-related differences of lower body power, reactive strength, 20 m sprint speed, flight heights (basic elements on beam and floor) and run-up speed on the vault of 33 youth female gymnasts. Further, we calculated correlations between all parameters separately for different age groups (7–9 y; 10–12 y; 13–15 y). We found larger differences between the age groups 7–9 y and 10–12 y than between 10–12 y and 13–15 y on the apparatuses (10–12 y vs. 7–9 y: +23% to +52%; 13–15 y vs. 10–12 y: +2% to +24%) and for physical conditioning variables (10–12 y vs. 7–9 y: +12 to +24%; 13–15 y vs. 10–12 y: + 5% to +16%). The correlations between flight heights and physical condition were the lowest for age group 7–9 y (r: from −0.47 to 0.78; 10–12 y: r: from −0.19 to 0.80; 13–15 y: r: from −0.20 to 0.90). An optimal application of the physical condition to enhance the gymnastics-specific performance (e.g., flight height) is strongly age-dependent. Regular monitoring of jumping abilities and the derivation of training recommendations can accelerate this development and the future performance of young athletes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
