Processes of water retention and movement and the hydraulic conductivity are altered in the rhizosphere. The aim of this study was to investigate the physical-hydric properties of soil aggregates in the rhizosphere of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) cropped in a Kandiudalfic Eutrudox, taking into account aspects related to soil aggregate stability. Soil aggregates from rhizosphere soil (RZS) and soil between plant rows (SBP) were used to determine soil water retention curves (SWRCs) and saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ksat). In addition, properties related to soil aggregate stability, such as water-dispersible clay, soil organic carbon (SOC), and microbial activity, were also assessed. The higher microbial activity observed in the RZS was facilitated by increased SOC and microbial activity, resulting in improved soil aggregation (less water-dispersible clay). For nearly all measured matric potentials, RZS had a higher water content than SBP. This was attributed to the stability of aggregates, increase in SOC content, and the root exudates, which improved soil water retention. The increase in total porosity in RZS was associated with improved soil aggregation, which prevents deterioration of the soil pore space and results in higher Ksat and hydraulic conductivity as a function of the effective relative saturation in RZS compared to SBP. The development of herbicide-resistant weed species is a threat to the agricultural industry in Iran and the world. The first step in managing this issue is the identification of herbicideresistant populations. In this study, 124 and 45 grass weed accessions, including winter wild oat, annual ryegrass, and littleseed canarygrass, were collected from wheat and canola fields, respectively, in different provinces of Iran. The accessions were screened using commonly used herbicides at the three- to four-leaf stage. The weed accessions collected from wheat fields were exposed to the recommended field dose of clodinafop-propargyl, pinoxaden, mesosulfuron-methyl+iodosulfuron-methyl-Na, and mesosulfuron-methyl+iodosulfuronmethyl- Na+diflufenican. Similarly, the canola grass weeds were treated with haloxyfop-Rmethyl, sethoxydim, cycloxydim, and clethodim. The experiment was carried out based on a completely randomized design with four replications under controlled greenhouse conditions. Four weeks after spraying, the fresh weight of the populations was measured. The results showed that 52, 9, 19, and 17% of grass weeds in wheat fields were resistant to clodinafop-propargyl, pinoxaden, mesosulfuron-methyl+iodosulfuron-methyl-Na, and mesosulfuron-methyl+iodosulfuron-methyl-Na+diflufenican, respectively. Morover, 47, 47, and 22% of the canola grass weeds showed resistance to haloxyfop-R-methyl, sethoxydim, and clethodim, respectively; while they were susceptible to cycloxydim. Cross-resistance to selective herbicides in canola was observed in 36% of the tested grass weed species. Additionally, multiple resistance to both ACCase and ALS inhibitors in wheat fields was identified in 13% of winter wild oat and 82% of annual ryegrass populations, respectively. It is recommended to avoid the use of herbicides with the same mechanism of action for controlling grass weeds in areas where the wheat and canola rotation system is prevalent. This research was carried out over two years and aimed to determine the potential forage yield and quality of annual ryegrass by applying manure, humic acid, and low doses of nitrogen fertilizer, within the framework of sustainable forage crop cultivation. The study was carried out from 2020 to 2022 with three replications according to the randomized block split plots experimental design. According to the study results, the highest values were achieved with combinations that included manure application, and even higher values were observed when manure was applied along with low doses of humic acid and nitrogen. The M20 + H20 + N100 treatment yielded the highest fresh yield, dry matter, and crude protein. The treatments with manure, humic acid, and nitrogen fertilizer had varying effects on the ADF and NDF content of annual ryegrass, resulting in fluctuating values. In conclusion, 20 t manure, 20 L humic acid, and 100 kg ha−1 N application can be suggested for sustainable and higher dry matter production with good quality for annual ryegrass cultivation under semi-humid climatic conditions. Background. Current molecular and genetic approaches make it possible to accelerate ryegrass breeding, simplify source material evaluation, and increase its accuracy. The efficiency of PCR-based SSR and SCoT marker techniques was studied in the context of evaluating the genetic structure of annual and perennial ryegrass accessions and defining DNA-identifying markers.Materials and methods. Genomic DNA was isolated from the aggregate sample of 30 seedlings from each of the 15 analyzed cultivars according to the modified SDS DNA extraction protocol. In total, 20 SSR and 22 SCoT markers were used to assess genetic polymorphism. Basic parameters of the markers’ informative efficiency were identified. Genetic relationships among the studied cultivars were analyzed on the basis of the Neighbor-Joining dendrogram and Bayesian model.Results. To assess the genetic polymorphism of ryegrass species and varieties, 7 SSR loci were selected, for which 110 allelic variants were identified (34 alleles were unique for individual cultivars), and 9 SCoT loci, for which 78 polymorphic amplification fragments were identified, with 28 being cultivar-specific. The dendrogram of genetic similarity and modeling in the Structure v2.3.4 program according to the results of SSR and SCoT analyses distributed the cultivars by their traits according to their species, ploidy level, origin, and similarity. Based on PCoA, carried out using summarized data of SSR and SCoT analyses, a multidimensional diagram of genetic relationships among ryegrass cultivars was constructed.Conclusions. The systems of SSR and SCoT markers appeared to be an efficient tool to reveal genetic polymorphism and identify differences among ryegrass species and cultivars. We found unique DNA profiles that can be used for genetic identification. The results of the study have practical significance in cultivar-specific identification and selection of cultivars for various purposes.

Rhizosphere microorganisms can help plants absorb nutrients, coordinate their growth, and improve their environmental adaptability. Coumarin can act as a signaling molecule that regulates the interaction between commensals, pathogens, and plants. In this study, we elucidate the effect of coumarin on plant root microorganisms. To provide a theoretical basis for the development of coumarin-derived compounds as biological pesticides, we determined the effect of coumarin on the root secondary metabolism and rhizosphere microbial community of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.). We observed that a 200 mg/kg coumarin treatment had a negligible effect on the rhizosphere soil bacterial species of the annual ryegrass rhizosphere, though it exhibited a significant effect on the abundance of bacteria in the rhizospheric microbial community. Under coumarin-induced allelopathic stress, annual ryegrass can stimulate the colonization of beneficial flora in the root rhizosphere; however, certain pathogenic bacteria, such as Aquicella species, also multiply in large numbers in such conditions, which may be one of the main reasons for a sharp decline in the annual ryegrass biomass production. Further, metabolomics analysis revealed that the 200 mg/kg coumarin treatment triggered the accumulation of a total of 351 metabolites, of which 284 were found to be significantly upregulated, while 67 metabolites were significantly downregulated in the T200 group (treated with 200 mg/kg coumarin) compared to the CK group (control group) (p < 0.05). Further, the differentially expressed metabolites were primarily associated with 20 metabolic pathways, including phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, flavonoid biosynthesis, glutathione metabolism, etc. We found significant alterations in the phenylpropanoid biosynthesis and purine metabolism pathways (p < 0.05). In addition, there were significant differences between the rhizosphere soil bacterial community and root metabolites. Furthermore, changes in the bacterial abundance disrupted the balance of the rhizosphere micro-ecosystem and indirectly regulated the level of root metabolites. The current study paves the way towards comprehensively understanding the specific relationship between the root metabolite levels and the abundance of the rhizosphere microbial community. Annual ryegrass toxicity (ARGT) is an often-fatal poisoning of livestock that consume annual ryegrass infected by the bacterium Rathayibacter toxicus. This bacterium is carried into the ryegrass by a nematode, Anguina funesta, and produces toxins within seed galls that develop during the flowering to seed maturity stages of the plant. The actual mechanism of biochemical transformation of healthy seeds to nematode and bacterial gall-infected seeds remains unclear and no clear-cut information is available on what type of volatile organic compounds accumulate in the respective galls. Therefore, to fill this research gap, the present study was designed to analyze the chemical differences among nematode galls (A. funesta), bacterial galls (R. toxicus) and healthy seeds of annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum) by using direct immersion solid-phase microextraction (DI-SPME) coupled with gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The method was optimized and validated by testing its linearity, sensitivity, and reproducibility. Fifty-seven compounds were identified from all three sources (nematode galls, bacterial galls and healthy seed), and 48 compounds were found to be present at significantly different (p < 0.05) levels in the three groups. Five volatile organic compounds (hexanedioic acid, bis(2-ethylhexyl) ester), (carbonic acid, but-2-yn-1-yl eicosyl ester), (fumaric acid, 2-ethylhexyl tridec-2-yn-1-yl ester), (oct-3-enoylamide, N-methyl-N-undecyl) and hexacosanoic acid are the most frequent indicators of R. toxicus bacterial infection in ryegrass, whereas the presence of 15-methylnonacosane, 13-methylheptacosane, ethyl hexacosyl ether, heptacosyl acetate and heptacosyl trifluoroacetate indicates A. funesta nematode infestation. Metabolites occurring in both bacterial and nematode galls included batilol (stearyl monoglyceride) and 9-octadecenoic acid (Z)-, tetradecyl ester. Among the chemical functional group, esters, fatty acids, and alcohols together contributed more than 70% in healthy seed, whereas this contribution was 61% and 58% in nematode and bacterial galls, respectively. This study demonstrated that DI-SPME is a valid technique to study differentially expressed metabolites in infected and healthy ryegrass seed and may help provide better understanding of the biochemical interactions between plant and pathogen to aid in management of ARGT. Objective The fermentation profile and silage quality of 3 Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) cultivars (cvs. Devis, Hellen, and Trinova) treated with 5 nitrogen doses (0, 50, 100, 150, and 200 kg/ha) were evaluated. Methods The experiment was laid out in split plot in randomized complete block design with three replications. Annual ryegrass cultivars used in this study have been commonly grown in Turkey. Nitrogen doses were set in main plot and cultivars in split plot in the field. Plants were harvested at full-flowering stage with dry matter content about 220 g/kg for first cutting and 260 g/kg for second cutting. Harvested plants were chopped theoretically into 2 to 3 cm lengths for ensiling. Chopped fresh materials were ensilaged by compressing in 2 L plastic jars about 3±0.1 kg. Results Effects of N doses on dry matter, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, dry matter digestibility, relative feed value, crude protein, pH, ammonia nitrogen, lactic acid, acetic acid, and lactic acid/acetic acid were statistically significant while water soluble carbohydrate, ash and organic matter were not statistically different. Ammonia nitrogen, crude protein, ash, organic matter, lactic acid, and lactic acid/acetic acid were affected by cultivars, but the other parameters were not. Increasing nitrogen applications positively affected the chemical composition of annual ryegrass silage. The significant increase in protein content was remarkable, however, silage fermentation properties were adversely affected by the increasing nitrogen dose. Conclusion It can be recommended 150 kg/ha nitrogen dose for annual ryegrass harvested at full blooming stage. Even though the silage fermentation properties of the used cultivars were similar, cv. Devis gave better results than the others in terms of silage pH and relative feed value.

Background: Cross-resistance between pre-emergence herbicides is developing in Australian populations of annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum Gaud.). A previous study has reported that selection with prosulfocarb (a pro-herbicide requiring bioactivation to its phytotoxic sulfoxide) can decrease metabolic resistance to trifluralin. Metabolism of prosulfocarb and trifluralin was investigated in L. rigidum populations with different levels of resistance to prosulfocarb, trifluralin and also pyroxasulfone, which is detoxified by glutathione (GSH) conjugation., Results: Coleoptiles and radicles of herbicide-treated seedlings responded differently to the same herbicide. Radicles had a lower capacity for bioactivation of prosulfocarb, and this was correlated with a lower ability to metabolise trifluralin within and among populations. Coleoptile resistance to prosulfocarb sulfoxide was negatively correlated with abundance of a major polar metabolite. There was no evidence of GSH conjugation with the sulfoxide, making any potential links between prosulfocarb and pyroxasulfone resistance less obvious., Conclusions: Activation and metabolism of prosulfocarb in L. rigidum is complex and differentially regulated in different tissues. Selection with prosulfocarb may ameliorate trifluralin metabolism in the radicles, but the relationship between prosulfocarb and pyroxasulfone resistance is not GSH-mediated. When applying pre-emergence herbicides, care should be taken with the composition of mixtures and rotations to avoid selection of cross-resistance between pyroxasulfone and prosulfocarb. © 2024 The Author(s). An efficient method for the synthesis of 1-isopropyl-4-isothiocyanato-4-methylcyclohex-1-ene has been developed with p-menth-3-en-1-amine as raw material. Next, a number of p-menth-3-en-1-amine thiourea derivatives (4a–f) have been obtained from the reactions between 1-isopropyl-4-isothiocyanato-4-methylcyclohex-1-ene and cyclohexylamine or the reactions between p-menth-3-en-1-amine and different isothiocyanates. Then, the herbicidal activities of these compounds were evaluated. The result indicated that some of these newly synthesised compounds displayed remarkable herbicidal activities against annual ryegrass. In addition, the derivative containing cyclohexane ring (4a) displayed much higher herbicidal activity against annual ryegrass than the derivatives containing benzene ring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Cinmethylin, a pre‐emergence herbicide inhibiting fatty acid thioesterase activity, has recently been introduced to Australian cereal cropping for the control of Lolium rigidum Gaud. (annual ryegrass). To date, there have been no confirmed cases of cinmethylin resistance identified in this species, but some populations exhibit reduced sensitivity to this herbicide. To explore the mechanism which contributes to reduced sensitivity of annual ryegrass to cinmethylin, the extent and nature of cinmethylin metabolism, using carbon‐14 (14C)‐labelled herbicide, were analysed in three reduced‐sensitivity annual ryegrass populations, alongside a susceptible population and cinmethylin‐tolerant wheat as controls. Results: All samples showed the same metabolite profile, with the extent of production of a specific water‐soluble metabolite being correlated to the level of herbicide sensitivity. Application of the cytochrome P450 inhibitor phorate caused a decrease in water‐soluble metabolite production as well as seedling growth in the presence of cinmethylin, indicating that reduced cinmethylin sensitivity in annual ryegrass could be wholly or partially due to oxidative modification of cinmethylin. Conclusion: Because annual ryegrass has the potential to metabolize cinmethylin in the same way as wheat, careful stewardship is required to ensure the longevity of this herbicide. © 2022 The Authors. Lolium rigidum (annual ryegrass) is the most costly winter weed in Australia and has recently been observed growing in summer. The occurrence of L. rigidum in winter is well documented, but there is no research on populations of this weed that germinate and grow in summer. Herein, we discuss how the potential cause of this seasonal expansion may be related to a change in dormancy duration. Dormancy can affect germination patterns but the growth and reproduction of a plant species depend on other factors, such as temperature and photoperiod. Therefore, dormancy alone cannot be the sole variable responsible for the presence of L. rigidum in summer crops, as typical summer temperature conditions are not favorable for the growth of this weed. Additional changes to the growth and development of summer populations may allow for the adaptation and infestation of L. rigidum in summer conditions.

Soil salination is likely to reduce crop production worldwide. Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) is one of the most important forages cultivated in temperate and subtropical regions. We performed a time-course comparative transcriptome for salinity-sensitive (SS) and salinity-insensitive (SI) genotypes of the annual ryegrass at six intervals post-stress to describe the transcriptional changes and identify the core genes involved in the early responses to salt stress. Our study generated 215.18 Gb of clean data and identified 7642 DEGs in six pairwise comparisons between the SS and SI genotypes of annual ryegrass. Function enrichment of the DEGs indicated that the differences in lipid, vitamins, and carbohydrate metabolism are responsible for variation in salt tolerance of the SS and SI genotypes. Stage-specific profiles revealed novel regulation mechanisms in salinity stress sensing, phytohormones signaling transduction, and transcriptional regulation of the early salinity responses. High-affinity K+ (HAKs) and high-affinity K1 transporter (HKT1) play different roles in the ionic homeostasis of the two genotypes. Moreover, our results also revealed that transcription factors (TFs), such as WRKYs, ERFs, and MYBs, may have different functions during the early signaling sensing of salt stress, such as WRKYs, ERFs, and MYBs. Generally, our study provides insights into the mechanisms of the early salinity response in the annual ryegrass and accelerates the breeding of salt-tolerant forage. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Five volatile organic compounds (hexanedioic acid, bis(2-ethylhexyl) ester), (carbonic acid, but-2-yn-1-yl eicosyl ester), (fumaric acid, 2-ethylhexyl tridec-2-yn-1-yl ester), (oct-3-enoylamide, N-methyl-N-undecyl) and hexacosanoic acid are the most frequent indicators of R. toxicus bacterial infection in ryegrass, whereas the presence of 15-methylnonacosane, 13-methylheptacosane, ethyl hexacosyl ether, heptacosyl acetate and heptacosyl trifluoroacetate indicates A. funesta nematode infestation. Metabolites occurring in both bacterial and nematode galls included batilol (stearyl monoglyceride) and 9-octadecenoic acid (Z)-, tetradecyl ester. Among the chemical functional group, esters, fatty acids, and alcohols together contributed more than 70% in healthy seed, whereas this contribution was 61% and 58% in nematode and bacterial galls, respectively. This study demonstrated that DI-SPME is a valid technique to study differentially expressed metabolites in infected and healthy ryegrass seed and may help provide better understanding of the biochemical interactions between plant and pathogen to aid in management of ARGT.

In order to further understand the potential mechanisms of grassland structure and function in response to soil phosphorus deficiency under future elevated CO2 concentration, we examined the effects of elevated CO2 concentration and phosphorus deficiency on the stomatal traits and leaf gas exchange parameters of annual ryegrass with environmental growth chambers, where the CO2 concentration was accurately controlled at 400 µmol/mol or 800 µmol/mol and meanwhile these grasses were fertilized with six phosphorus levels including 0.004 mmol/L (P0.004), 0.012 mmol/L (P0.012), 0.02 mmol/L (P0.02), 0.06 mmol/L (P0.06), 0.1 mmol/L (P0.1) and 0.5 mmol/L (P0.5). Our results showed that: (1) The elevated CO2 concentration significantly decreased the stomatal density of plants under lower phosphorus levels, but increased the stomatal density of annual ryegrass grown at higher phosphorus levels (0.1 mmol/L and 0.5 mmol/L); Meanwhile, elevated CO2 concentration obviously decreased the stomatal openness of annual ryegrass, and made the spatial distribution pattern of stomata more regular when plants were grown at the phosphorus level of 0.06 mmol/L. (2) The elevated CO2 concentration substantially enhanced the net photosynthetic rates (Pn) of annual ryegrass treated with higher phosphorus levels (0.1 mmol/L and 0.5 mmol/L), but reduced the Pn of plants subjected to lower phosphorus levels, and thus increased the water use efficiency (WUE) of annual ryegrass at high phosphorus levels. (3) The responses of chlorophyll contents to elevated CO2 concentration were different among the six phosphorus levels, and elevated CO2 concentration substantially changed the ratio of chlorophyll a/b at higher phosphorus levels. (4) The total plant biomass and allocation between aboveground and belowground were obviously changed by phosphorus deficiency, and elevated CO2 concentration featured CO2 fertilization effect on the aboveground biomass of annual ryegrass at higher phosphorus levels. These results suggested that the responses of stomatal traits and leaf gas exchange efficiency to elevated CO2 concentration were obviously asymmetry between low and high phosphorus levels. These grasses under higher phosphorus levels optimized the leaf gas exchange efficiency by increasing the stomatal density and stomatal openness as well as regulating the spatial distribution pattern of stomata, and thus plants might benefit from CO2 fertilization effect under elevated CO2 concentration. By contrast, annual ryegrass plants subjected to low phosphorus levels down-regulated the morphological traits of stoma and the regular pattern of distribution, and decreased leaf gas exchange efficiency of annual ryegrass to adapt the low phosphorus conditions under high CO2 concentration. Our results may have significant importance on further understanding the potential mechanisms of grassland ecosystem structure and function in response to elevated CO2 concentration and phosphorus deficiency under future climate change. Background: Nitrogen (N) plays an important role in dairy systems, both in production costs and as an indicator of environmental impact. Objective: The objective was to investigate the effects on milk production and nitrogen excretion by dairy cows fed cut pastures either of perennial ryegrass-red clover (PRG-RCL) or annual ryegrass-white clover (ARG-WCL), complemented with ground maize straw and of commercial concentrate. Methodology: Six dairy cows were used in a double cross-over on-farm experiment with 14-day experimental periods. Milk yield and composition, live weight, body condition score, chemical composition of feeds and N content in faeces, urine, milk and blood were recorded over the last four days of each experimental period. Results: No differences were found (P > 0.05) for milk yield nor composition. Cows on ARG-WCL had a higher N intake and N balance than those on PRG-RCL (P < 0.05); also, there were higher levels of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and urine urea nitrogen (UUN) when cows were fed ARG-WCL than PRG-RCL (P < 0.05). Implications: This work allows us to know the amount of nitrogen excreted in milk production in small-scale dairy systems. Conclusions: It is concluded that PRG-RCL may be a feeding strategy to reduce N excretion and achieve higher efficiency in N use for small-scale dairy systems.

The aim of current study was to determine silage quality traits of leafy “L” and semi-leafy “SL” forage pea varieties (Pisum arvense L) and annual ryegrass “R” (Lolium multiflorum var. westervoldicum L.) mixtures (100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60, 20:80 and 0:100%). The harvested materials were chopped in size of 2 cm, and they filled into vacuum bags, and then let for fermentation at 25±2 oC for 45 days. In this study; dry matter, pH, crude protein, crude ash, some organic acids, acid detergent fiber (ADF), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), potassium (K), phosphorus (P), calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg) and cobalt (Co) contents were determined. The highest crude protein content was determined sole forage pea silages (16.31% and 15.73%) and 80L+20R% (15.58%) mixture. According to the Flieg score, leaf forage pea (97.51) and 80L+20R% (99.19) silages have the highest value and, they were in very good quality class. ADF and NDF content of silages ranged between 25.87-30.24% and 34.55-45.53%, respectively. The highest lactic acid was determined in 100R% (4.448%), 80L+20R% (4.250%), 40L+60R% (3.523%) and 20L+80R% (3.885%). The mineral content of silages were at a level to meet the needs of the livestock. As a result, it was determined that the mixture of leafy forage pea and ryegrass 80+20% silage was better in terms of silage quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We evaluated Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) establishment in a factorial of grazing intensity (intense, moderate, moderate‐light, light, and no grazing, with target average sward heights of 10, 20, 30, and 40 cm in the grazed plots) and additional seeding (self‐seeding with or without additional seeding) in an integrated soybean‐beef cattle system in southern Brazil. Grazing treatments were imposed in winter (June–July) and followed by a direct‐seeded soybean crop (November). The establishment was quantified prior to the stocking periods in 2017 and 2018, corresponding to self‐seeding from 2016 and 2017. Intense grazing impaired ryegrass re‐establishment, resulting in larger individual plants (0.54 vs. 0.15 g dry matter plant−1) but lower population density (57 vs. 1,355 plants m−2) than in the other treatments. Additional broadcast ryegrass seeding did not fully compensate for the reduced natural reseeding in this treatment. The addition of seeds under intense grazing increased plant population density to values comparable to moderate grazing intensities but reduced individual plant mass, limiting herbage mass attained by the end of the pasture establishment phase. Contrastingly, the various combinations of individual plant mass and population density were sufficient to maintain herbage masses in moderate to light grazing intensities that were comparable to that in the ungrazed treatment, regardless of seed addition (63 vs. 180 g DM m−2 for intense grazing vs. the average of other treatments over the whole establishment phase). Increasing concern for the ongoing availability and efficacy of herbicides is driving interest in the development of alternative physical and thermal weed control methods. Fortunately, improvements in weed detection through advancements in computing hardware and deep learning algorithms are creating an opportunity to use novel weed control tools, such as lasers, in large-scale cropping systems. For alternative control options, there are two key weed control timing opportunities, early and late post-crop emergence. Weed density for the early timing is typically higher, with a shorter window for control. Conversely, late post-emergent treatment of surviving and late-emerging weeds would occur in lower densities of larger and more variably sized weeds, given a prior weed control effort, but with a longer available weed control period. Research in laser weeding to date has primarily focused on early growth stage weeds and the ability of this approach to control larger weeds remains unknown. This study used a 25 W, 975 nm fiber-coupled diode laser to evaluate the opportunity for control of annual ryegrass (Lolium rigidum Gaudin) and the influence of four different growth stages (three-leaf, seven-leaf, mid-tillering, and late-tillering). Annual ryegrass plants at each growth stage were treated using a laser-focused to a 5 mm diameter with five different irradiation durations developing energy densities of 1.3, 2.5, 6.4, 19.1, and 76.4 J mm−2. At the three-leaf stage, all plants were controlled at 76.4 J mm−2 and 93.3% controlled at 19.1 J mm−2. Complete control of seven-leaf plants was only achieved at 76.4 J mm−2. Although laser treatments did not control mid-tillering stage plants, 76.4 J mm−2 reduced biomass by 60.2%. No similar reductions in biomass were recorded for the largest plants. This initial research assists in the development of novel weed control options in the context of large-scale conservation cropping systems. Future research should investigate the influence of laser treatments on additional weed species and the impact of increased laser power on larger weeds.

Conventional agriculture is specializing rapidly into the management of few monoculture crops, threatening crop diversity and questioning the sustainability of extensive cropping systems. The grazing of cover crops in integrated crop-livestock systems could be a feasible biologically based technology to restore crop diversity and mitigate ecological issues in cropping systems. However, there is limited evidence on plausible synergies or trade-offs for the practice, and about how grazing plans could affect the herbage production and services from cover crops. This work assessed the effects of cattle grazing on the primary and secondary production of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) in an integrated ryegrass–soybean rotation system. Specifically, the prediction for synergistic effects of cattle grazing on the ryegrass herbage production, residual crop cover and animal performance were tested in a 2-year (2014 and 2015) study comprising a randomized complete block design of four grazing intensity treatments, replicated three times. A no-cattle grazing treatment (NG), used as control, or continuous grazing with Holstein heifers (~220kg live weight) at targeted sward heights of 5, 10, 15 and 20cm (hereafter referred as G5, G10, G15 and G20, respectively) was applied to ryegrass plots. Soil salination is likely to reduce crop production worldwide. Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) is one of the most important forages cultivated in temperate and subtropical regions. We performed a time-course comparative transcriptome for salinity-sensitive (SS) and salinity-insensitive (SI) genotypes of the annual ryegrass at six intervals post-stress to describe the transcriptional changes and identify the core genes involved in the early responses to salt stress. Our study generated 215.18 Gb of clean data and identified 7642 DEGs in six pairwise comparisons between the SS and SI genotypes of annual ryegrass. Function enrichment of the DEGs indicated that the differences in lipid, vitamins, and carbohydrate metabolism are responsible for variation in salt tolerance of the SS and SI genotypes. Stage-specific profiles revealed novel regulation mechanisms in salinity stress sensing, phytohormones signaling transduction, and transcriptional regulation of the early salinity responses. High-affinity K+ (HAKs) and high-affinity K1 transporter (HKT1) play different roles in the ionic homeostasis of the two genotypes. Moreover, our results also revealed that transcription factors (TFs), such as WRKYs, ERFs, and MYBs, may have different functions during the early signaling sensing of salt stress, such as WRKYs, ERFs, and MYBs. Generally, our study provides insights into the mechanisms of the early salinity response in the annual ryegrass and accelerates the breeding of salt-tolerant forage.

BACKGROUND Resistance to the dinitroaniline herbicide trifluralin in Lolium rigidum (annual ryegrass) often is mediated by the enhanced capacity to metabolize the herbicide to less toxic polar conjugates and/or by functionally recessive target‐site mutations in α‐tubulin. RESULTS: In two L. rigidum populations possessing enhanced trifluralin metabolism, resistance was largely reversed by recurrent selection with the thiocarbamate herbicide prosulfocarb (i.e. plant survival was two‐ to >20‐fold lower). Their ability to metabolize trifluralin was significantly decreased (by ≈2.3‐fold) following recurrent prosulfocarb selection, to levels comparable to those observed in susceptible plants or when trifluralin metabolism was inhibited by treatment with the insecticide phorate. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides evidence that trait(s) enabling efficient trifluralin metabolism in L. rigidum are purged from the population under prosulfocarb recurrent selection. The level of trifluralin metabolism in vitro and its inhibition caused by phorate action on trifluralin‐metabolizing enzyme(s) is equivalent to the effect produced by prosulfocarb selection. The hypothetical link between the two phenomena is that the putative monooxygenase(s) conferring trifluralin metabolic resistance also mediate the activation of prosulfocarb to its toxic sulfoxide. Thus, we speculate that survival to prosulfocarb via a lack of metabolic herbicide activation, and survival to trifluralin conferred by enhanced herbicide metabolism, are mutually exclusive. Appropriate application of nitrogen (N) can alleviate the salt stress-induced damage on plants. This study explores the changes of nitrogen requirement in feeding annual ryegrass seedlings under mild salt concentrations (50 mM, 100 mM) plus its underlying mitigation mechanism. Results showed that low salt concentration decreased N requirement as observed from the increment in plant height and biomass at a relative low N level (2.0mMnot 5.0 mM). Under salt treatment, especially at 50mMNaCl, the OJIP (Chl a fluorescence induction transient) curve and a series of performance indexes (PIABS, RC/CS0, ET0/CS0, -E0, -0) peaked whereas DI0/RC, Vj andM0 were the lowest under moderately low N level (2.0 mM). In addition, under salt stress, moderately low N application could maintain the expression of NR (nitrate reductase) and GS (glutamine synthetase) encoding genes at a relatively stable level but had no effect on the expression of detected NRT (nitrate transporter) gene. The seedlings cultured at 2.0 mM N also exhibited the highest activity of CAT and POD antioxidant enzymes and the lowest MDA content and EL under relative low level of salt treatment. These results indicated that mild salt treatment of annual ryegrass seedlings might reduce N requirement while moderately low N application could promote their growth via regulating photosynthesis, alleviating ROS-induced (reactive oxygen species) damage and maintenance of N metabolism. These results also can provide useful reference for nitrogen application in moderation rather than in excess on annual ryegrass in mild or medium salinity areas through understanding the underlying response mechanisms. The dairy activity, based on pastures, represents the main source of income for the rural population of the Andes of northern Peru. The objective was to evaluate biomass yield, growth rate, plant height, Crude Protein (CP), Neutral Detergent Fiber (NDF), in vitro digestibility of dry matter (IVDDM) and metabolizable energy (ME) of 22 genotypes of Lolium spp. in three Andean floors (AF) (AF I: 2300 - 2800, AF II: 2801 - 3300 and AF III: 3301 - 3800 masl) in northern Peru. Better biomass (7662 kg dry material (DM) ha-1 year -1 ) and growth rate (21.0 kg DM ha-1 day-1 ) showed AF I for Lolium perenne L., however AF III stood out in yield (9,041 kg MS ha-1 year-1 ) and growth rate (24.8 kg DM ha-1 day-1 ) for Lolium multiflorum L. The mean ME was 2.61 Mcal kg-1 MS and 2.43 Mcal kg-1 MS for L. perenne and L. multiflorum, respectively. The nutritional values of both varieties are adequate for feeding cattle to grazing in the mountains. To determine how mowing and nitrogen applications affect the seed yield components and germination characteristics of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.), an experiment was conducted in Eskişehir Ecological Conditions in 2018 with Split-Plot in the Randomized Complete Block. The primary factor was mowing or not mowing, whereas the subfactor was nitrogen dose (0, 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25 kg/da). To determine the effect of the applications on the seed production and quality of annual ryegrass, plant height, spike length, number of fertile tillers, number of spikelets, thousand seed weight, seed yield, germination percentage, second-day germination percentage, mean germination time, seedling length, seedling fresh, and dry weight were examined. Among the results, mowing did not significantly affect the seed production and quality of annual ryegrass, and no significant difference occurred between nitrogen doses of 10-20 kg/da in terms of fertile tiller number and TSW. The highest seed yield, 132 kg/da, was obtained with the application of 10 kg/da of nitrogen to the mowed plots, and loss in yield was inevitable after this dose. Although total germination percentage did not change according to nitrogen dose, the highest second-day germination percentage and mean germination time were achieved in the unmowed plots with 20 kg/da of nitrogen. As a result, fields for planting annual ryegrass for seed production can be mowed or grazed in early spring. Although the best nitrogen dose for seed production was determined to be 10 kg/da, that rate can be slightly increased for earlier germination and seed emergence. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Overreliance on herbicides for weed control is conducive to the evolution of herbicide resistance. Lolium rigidum (annual ryegrass) is a species that is prone to evolve resistance to a wide range of herbicide modes of action. Rapid detection of herbicide-resistant weed populations in the field can aid farmers to optimize the use of effective herbicides for their control. The feasibility and utility of a rapid 7-d agar-based assay to reliably detect L. rigidum resistant to key pre- and post-emergence herbicides including clethodim, glyphosate, pyroxasulfone and trifluralin were investigated in three phases: correlation with traditional pot-based dose-response assays, effect of seed dormancy, and stability of herbicides in agar. Easy-to-interpret results were obtained using non-dormant seeds from susceptible and resistant populations, and resistance was detected similarly as pot-based assays. However, the test is not suitable for trifluralin because of instability in agar as measured over a 10-d period, as well as freshly-harvested seeds due to primary dormancy. This study demonstrates the utility of a portable and rapid assay that allows for on-farm testing of clethodim, glyphosate, and pyroxasulfone resistance in L. rigidum, thereby aiding the identification and implementation of effective herbicide control options.

In the present study, we examined forage yield and quality features of annual ryegrass Lolium multiflorum Lam. lines developed by using half-sib family selection breeding method. The study was conducted in a randomized complete block design with three replications between 2009 and 2011 years in Samsun, Turkey. Based on the average of the results of two years, significant differences were found for all parameters. In the studied lines and varieties, dry matter yields were found between 6.66 and 9.37 t ha-1, crude protein contents 11.46-13.81%, crude protein yields 0.80-1.18 t ha-1, acid detergent fiber 31.41-34.75%, neutral detergent fiber 48.77-52.80%, total digestible nutrient contents 56.49-60.80%, total digestible nutrient yields 376.35-556.42 t ha-1 and relative feed values 109.33-122.83. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the effects of the addition of crystalline fructose and urea to an annual ryegrassbased diet on microbial protein synthesis, fermentation profile and nutrient apparent digestibility, using continuous culture fermenters. Six fermenters were used in a 3 x 2 factorial arrangement with three levels of water soluble carbohydrates (WSC) obtained by crystalline fructose addition (21, 24 and 27 g.100 g DM1; LWSC, MWSC and HWSC, respectively) and two levels of CP obtained by urea addition (14.6 and 18.6 g.100 g DM1, LCP and HCP, respectively). Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) is a widely used cool-season turf and forage grass with high productivity and ornamental characteristics. However, the abundant intra-cultivar genetic variability usually hampers the application of conventional techniques for cultivar identification. The objectives of this study were to: (1) describe an efficient strategy for identification of six tetraploid annual ryegrass cultivars and (2) investigate the genetic diversity based on SSR markers. A total of 242 reliable bands were obtained from 29 SSR primer pairs with an average of 8.3 bands for each primer pair and the average value of polymorphic information content (PIC) was 0.304. The result of analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) revealed that 81.99% of the genetic variation occurred in within-cultivars and 18.01% among-cultivars. The principal coordinate analysis (PCoA) showed that the first two principal axes explain 8.57% (PC1) and 6.05% (PC2) of total variation, respectively. By using multi-bulk strategy based on different filtering thresholds, the results suggested that bands frequency of 40% could be used as a reliable standard for cultivar identification in annual ryegrass. Under this threshold, 12 SSR primer pairs (00-04A, 02-06G, 02-08C, 03-05A, 04-05B, 10-09E, 12-01A, 13-02H, 13-12D, 14-06F, 15-01C and 17-10D) were detected for direct identification of six tetraploid annual ryegrass cultivars, which could be incorporated into conservation schemes to protect the intellectual property of breeders, ensure purity for consumers, as well as guarantee effective use of cultivars in future.

The fertilization in rangelands has a positive effect in the forage production. The increased nitrogen (N) availability improves plant growth and forage quality of native pastures. However, in the Pampa biome conditions of Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, these responses occur surprisingly fast and consistently. Therefore, the objective of this work was to quantify the N effect in the botanical composition of a natural pasture overseeded with annual ryegrass in Southern Brazil. The effects of three rates of N fertilization (zero, 100 and 200 kg N ha-1) were evaluated. Forage biomass was estimated on a monthly basis using the double sampling approach. The different botanical components of each forage sample were manually sorted in the laboratory. In order to calculate the Rényi diversity profile, two floristic composition evaluations were performed in the experimental area in December of 2010 and September of 2011. The ryegrass biomass production is highly affected by the N fertilization. The botanical composition of natural pastures modifies most probably by increasing ryegrass competition at early spring.

Soil salinity is a global challenge emanating from climatic changes, depletion of fresh water reserves and extensive irrigation practices among other factors. Soil salinization still remains a huge concern in the realization of sustainable agricultural production. While emphasis has been placed on the food crops, forage production, which is an important component of the food chain, is affected as well. The aim of this study was to evaluate the morphological and physiological response to salinity stress in diploid cultivars and auto-induced tetraploid lines of annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum spp. multiflorum). Diploid seeds and their induced tetraploid counterparts were germinated on filter paper moistened with different concentrations of sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions, and seedlings were treated with 500 mM NaCl for 10 days in controlled conditions. The effect of different salt concentrations on germination and seedlings was studied. Results showed that seeds from the induced tetraploid lines despite being bigger had higher germination index and lower median germination time (T50) values compared to the diploid progenitors. At the seedling stage, increase in the ploidy level had a role in conferring improved tolerance to salinity stress. The induced tetraploid lines had an advantage over their diploid counterparts as the induced tetraploid lines had significant reduction in their growth in response to salinity stress, higher relative water content and antioxidant activities. This research was conducted to investigate the effects of seven different nitrogen doses (0, 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 kg ha-1) on the yield and quality of some annual ryegrass species (Alberto, Devis, and Baqueano) at the experimental area of Agricultural Faculty of Isparta University of Applied Science under Isparta ecological conditions in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019 vegetation periods. This research was conducted in a randomized block design with three replication. Plant height, stem thickness, hay yield, crude protein ratio, crude protein yield, ADF and NDF ratios were investigated. According to average results, nitrogen applications increased plant height, stem thickness, hay yield, crude protein ratio, crude protein yield while it decreased ADF and NDF ratios. When the differences between the cultivars were examined, it was found that Devis in terms of plant height and ADF ratio, Alberto in terms of stem thickness, hay yield, crude protein ratio, and crude protein yield, were higher values. According to the results of this study, it can be recommended to apply 250 kg ha-1 nitrogen dose for high forage yield and quality in Italian grass farming under Isparta ecological conditions, considering environmental pollution and economic conditions. BACKGROUND: The flatheaded appletree borer (Chrysobothris femorata Olivier) (FHAB) is a native pest of fruit, shade and nut trees throughout the United States. Use of cover crops is an effective pest management tool for some key insect pests in vegetable and cereal production systems, but its impact in woody ornamental production systems has not been investigated. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a winter cover crop for management of FHAB in nursery production. Red maple trees (Acer rubrum L.) grown under four treatment regimes (cover crop, cover crop + insecticide, bare row and bare row + insecticide) were evaluated for damage by FHAB and impact on tree growth parameters. RESULTS: The cover crop reduced FHAB damage, with results equivalent to standard imidacloprid treatments. The reduction in FHAB attacks in cover crop treatments may be due to microclimate changes at preferred oviposition sites, trunk camouflage or interference with access to oviposition sites. Tree growth was reduced in the cover crop treatments due to competition for resources. CONCLUSION: Physical blockage of oviposition sites by cover crops and subsequent microclimate changes protected against FHAB damage. Abstract Annual ryegrass is one of the most serious, costly weeds of winter cropping systems in Australia. To determine whether its competition-mediated plant defence mechanisms effect on wheat grain quality, wheat (cv. Yitpi) and annual ryegrass were grown under two levels of CO 2 (400 ppm; (a[CO 2 ]) vs 700 ppm; (e[CO 2 ]), two levels of water (well-watered vs drought) and two types of competition (wheat only; (W), and wheat × annual ryegrass; (W × R) with four replicates. The competition × [CO 2 ] interaction had a significant effect on wheat grain protein content, where it was increased in W × R under both e[CO 2 ] (+17%) and a[CO 2 ] (+21%). Grain yield, total grain reducing power and phenolic content were significantly affected by [CO 2 ] × drought × competition. In a summary, annual ryegrass competition significantly altered the wheat grain quality under both [CO 2 ] levels (depending on the soil water level), while also decreasing the grain yield. Abstract The objective of this study was to evaluate the silage fermentation and bacterial community of bur clover, annual ryegrass and their mixtures in south of China. Bur clover, annual ryegrass and their mixtures were ensiled without additive (control), or with lactic acid bacteria inoculant (LABi, 106 cfu/g of fresh weight) and formic acid (FA, 3 mL/kg of fresh weight) for 60 d of fermentation. Untreated bur clover displayed high bacterial diversity resulting in a poor fermentation. LABi and FA reduced bacterial diversity and enriched the relative abundance of Lactobacillus , Pediococcus or Sporolactobacillus species during ensiling, resulting in improved silage fermentation. Annual ryegrass contained relative abundance of Proteobacteria and Clostridium species, and produced more butyric acid. This study confirmed that LABi and FA could reduce microbial diversity and improve silage quality; and Clostridium species produced butyric acid which caused a poor fermentation. The genus Lolium comprises several species of economical importance in temperate countries, mostly due to their high nutritional value and adaptability to cold environments, including southern regions of Brazil. Recently, several diploid cultivars and populations, as well as synthetic tetraploid cultivars have been explored. In order to viabilize or to direct crossings, it is important that the accessions present regular meiosis, thus, producing viable pollen grains. In this way, this study aimed at investigating the meiosis of nine accessions of Lolium multiflorum used in breeding programs, seeking to evaluate its viability in future crossings. The meiosis of diploid plants (2n = 2× = 14) is more regular than the artificially tetraploidized genotypes (2n = 4× = 28). In the tetraploids, univalent, bivalent, and multivalent configurations were observed. The irregularities were associated to mixoploidy, irregular segregation of chromosomes, spindle disorders, asynchrony, micronuclei, and cellular fusion and formation of syncyte. The abnormalities affected the meiotic index of tetraploid cultivars, characterizing them as unstable. Nevertheless, both diploid and tetraploid genotypes are considered able to participate in crossings because, although there are abnormalities, they do not occur at levels that could affect the production of viable pollen grains. Ryegrass is considered a useful grass species for forage production and turf purposes. Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) and perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.)are two species of ryegrass with similar genomes. So far, little information exists concerning their physiological response to salt-alkali stress during germination stage, especially under different temperature regimes. Seeds of ryegrass were germinated at four alternating temperatures (10–20, 15–25, 20–30, and 25–35°C) with salinity (NaCl) and alkalinity (Na2CO3, high pH) stresses. Results showed that optimal germination for both species under stress conditions occurred at higher temperatures (20–30°C for annual ryegrass; 20–30°C and 25–35°C for perennial ryegrass). Germination percentage and germination rate were both inhibited by increasing salinity or alkalinity, particularly higher alkalinities under any temperature. The inhibitory effects of the high salinity on germination were greater at 10–20°C for both species. However, seeds were subjected to more stress at 25–35°C under alkali stress even though the concentration was very low. In addition, both high and low temperatures lead to a markedly decrease in seed germination under alkali stress for perennial ryegrass. Recovery percentage of both species were highest at 400 mM salinity and 25 mM alkalinity under any temperature, especially 10–20°C, and 25–35°C also resulted in lower recovery percentages under both stresses for ryegrass. Moreover, annual ryegrass had a much higher recovery percentage than perennial ryegrass under such stress conditions. These results suggest that salinity stress and alkalinity stress are greatly different, and the salt-alkaline tolerance of ryegrass seeds is greatly affected by the interactions of temperature and salinity–alkalinity.

Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum) is a cool-season annual grass cultivated worldwide for its high yield and quality. With the areas of saline soil increasing, investigation of the molecular mechanisms of annual ryegrass tolerance under salt stress has become a significant topic. qRT-PCR has been a predominant assay for determination of the gene expression, in which selecting a valid internal reference gene is a crucial step. The objective of present study was to evaluate and identify suitable reference genes for qRT-PCR in annual ryegrass under salt stress. The results calculated by RefFinder indicated that eEF1A(s) was the most stable reference gene in leaves, whereas EF1-a was the least stable; meanwhile, TBP-1 was the most optimal in roots and in all samples, and the eIF-5A shouldn’t be utilized for normalization of the gene expression. eEF1A(s) is more suitable than TBP-1 as reference gene in leaves when verified with P5CS1 and Cyt-Cu/Zn SOD genes. We should choose optimal reference genes in specific tissues instead of the most stable one selected from different conditions and tissues.

In Australia, winter annual grasses provide the strongest competition against wheat for resources which detrimentally affects grain yield. With increasing action from government, industry, and grower groups to reduce herbicide spray drift, adoption of drift reduction technologies (DRTs) especially DRT nozzles has increased over recent years. Some herbicides are less effective when sprays are too coarse as droplets may not be retained on target weed surfaces or not intercepted by target leaves. This is particularly an issue with winter annual grasses, whose small, narrow leaves and ability to grow within the wheat canopy makes their control more difficult. This study sought to understand the effect of droplet size on herbicide efficacy by evaluating the effect of six nozzles, five of which have DRT features across six different herbicides (amitrole, clodinafop, glyphosate, imazamox plus imazapyr, metribuzin, and paraquat) for the control of four winter annual grasses (annual ryegrass, Italian ryegrass, rescuegrass, and tame oats). Plants were grown in pots outdoors on the University of Queensland Gatton campus and were sprayed at 28 days after emergence in August and repeated in October 2015. Results from this study indicate DRT nozzles that produce sprays classified as Ultra-Coarse (>650 μm D v0.5 ) can preserve efficacy for some herbicides. Differences were not observed for herbicide efficacy of clodinafop, imazamox plus imazapyr, and glyphosate across both years. Coarse sprays appear to provide the most herbicide efficacy across a wide array of modes of action, and yet reduce spray drift potential compared to finer sprays. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
