Here we comprehensively review the available knowledge on effects of different pretreatment technologies on microbial population and microbial dynamics in anaerobic digestion (AD) fed with different substrates and different operational parameters. To identify peer-reviewed studies published in English-language journals, a comprehensive search was performed across multiple electronic databases. The eligible studies were analyzed to extract data and information pertaining to the configuration of anaerobic reactors, operational parameters, and various pretreatment processes such as chemical, biological, enzymatic, thermal, microaerobic, and ultrasonic. The findings derived from this current review demonstrated that different chemical, biological, and physical pretreatment technologies improve the biomethane potential (BMP) and potentially affect the dominant bacteria and archaea. Moreover, although hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis are more observed due to resistance to extreme conditions, methane production follows both aceticlastic and hydrogenotrophic pathways in AD assisted with different pretreatment process. Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes phyla of bacteria were the dominant hydrolytic bacteria due to synergetic effects of different pretreatment process on solubilization and bioavailability of recalcitrant substrates. In summary, a holistic understanding on bacteria and archaea communities, along with the mechanisms of the dominant microorganisms leads to enhanced stability and overall performance of anaerobic digestion (AD) processes. Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) have emerged as an effective technology for treating domestic and industrial wastewater. However, AnMBRs typically exhibit low membrane fluxes (<10 L/m2.h), which limits their wide application. Despite the use of various techniques to control membrane fouling, the relationships among these techniques and the challenges associated with their application remain unclear. Current literature categorizes membrane fouling control approaches into four classes, namely a reduction in the concentration of soluble microbial products (SMP), an increase in shear, an increase in particle size, and membrane optimization. Biological techniques are effective in reducing the concentration of SMP but limit the flexibility of reactor operation. The remaining three methods are non-biological techniques. Shear-induced lift force, permeation drag force, and the xDLVO theory on microparticles can be used to elucidate the mechanisms of these non-biological techniques, except for dynamic membranes. This indicates that other proposed additional forces may be disregarded. Non-biological techniques are associated with high energy costs and membrane damage. Hydrophilic membranes are effective but super-hydrophilic membranes have not been used in AnMBRs. Different materials rather than the membrane should be applied to create an electronic field for membrane fouling control. The application of dynamic membrane should not result in biofouling of a downstream water treatment process. Among current techniques, dosing flocculant is the most promising method for controlling membrane fouling, but developing an auto-flocculant dosing strategy is vital. • Biochar accelerated the conversion of acetic and propionic acids in AnMBR. • Biochar enriched the functional bacteria degrading polysaccharides and protein. • Biochar facilitated the enrichment of autotrophic methanogenic bacteria. • Biochar increased c-type cytochromes-mediated DIET. • SCG-BC has a high electron accepting and donating capacities of 0.0362 ± 0.002 mmole− g−1. A biochar-assisted anaerobic membrane bioreactor (BC-AnMBR) was conducted to evaluate the performance in treating swine wastewater with different organic loading rates (OLR) ranging from 0.38 to 1.13 kg-COD/(m3.d). Results indicated that adding spent coffee grounds biochar (SCG-BC) improved the organic removal efficiency compared to the conventional AnMBR, with an overall COD removal rate of > 95.01%. Meanwhile, methane production of up to 0.22 LCH 4 /gCOD with an improvement of 45.45% was achieved under a high OLR of 1.13 kg-COD/(m3.d). Furthermore, the transmembrane pressure (TMP) in the BC-AnMBR system was stable at 4.5 kPa, and no irreversible membrane fouling occurred within 125 days. Microbial community analysis revealed that the addition of SCG-BC increased the relative abundance of autotrophic methanogenic archaea, particularly Methanosarcina (from 0.11% to 11.16%) and Methanothrix (from 16.34% to 24.05%). More importantly, Desulfobacterota and Firmicutes phylum with direct interspecific electron transfer (DIET) capabilities were also enriched with autotrophic methanogens. Analysis of the electron transfer pathway showed that the concentration of c-type cytochromes increased by 38.60% in the presence of SCG-BC, and thus facilitated the establishment of DIET and maintained high activity of the electron transfer system even at high OLR. Anaerobic Membrane Bioreactors (AnMBR) offer numerous advantages in wastewater treatment, yet they are prone to membrane fouling after extended operation, impeding their long-term efficiency and stability. In this study, a coupled system was developed using modified conductive membranes as the filtration membrane for the AnMBR and as the anodic conductive membrane in the microbial electrochemical system, with a total volume of approximately 2.57 L. The research focused on understanding the membrane fouling characteristics of the AnMBR when treating wastewater containing sodium ion (Na+) and magnesium ion (Mg2+). When the system was treating wastewater containing Na+, organic pollutants such as proteins and polysaccharides were identified as the primary causes of membrane fouling. Three experimental groups generating different electric currents exhibited extended operational times compared to the open-circuit control group, with extensions of 30, 24, and 15 days, respectively. Conversely, when treating wastewater with Mg2+, organic–inorganic composite fouling, primarily driven by Mg2+ bridging, emerged as the key challenge, with the experimental groups showing operational extensions of 5, 8, and 23 days, respectively, in comparison to the control group. Analysis of proteins and polysaccharides indicated that electric current played a crucial role in reducing organic fouling in the sludge cake layer. When treating wastewater containing Na+, the effectiveness of membrane fouling control was directly proportional to the electric current, while when treating wastewater containing Mg2+, it was directly proportional to the voltage. Over the past 45 years, anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) technology has transitioned from laboratory-scale research to widespread successful implementation in various wastewater treatment applications, as part of sustainable technology initiatives. Compared to aerobic membrane bioreactor (AeMBR) and conventional anaerobic treatment methods, AnMBR offers numerous well-documented advantages, including efficient reduction of chemical oxygen demand (COD), conversion of organic waste into useful biogas, and production of treated effluent with less sludge generation. Nevertheless, employing AnMBR for treating low to moderate strength wastewater, such as domestic and municipal wastewater, continues to pose challenges due to concerns regarding membrane fouling and low bioenergy recovery efficiency. This article features last 11 year's publication statistics to visualize global research trends covering the historical development of AnMBRs and related areas, emphasizing key innovations and technological milestones that have driven their evolution in reactor configurations. It includes a performance comparison of AnMBRs across different wastewater treatments, presenting a tabulated analysis and critically discussed various performance parameters such as, COD removal efficiency, biogas production, biomass retention, and sludge generation. The discussion also covered the impact of operational and design parameters on AnMBR performance to enhance the depth of analysis. Despite its effectiveness, AnMBR frequently suffers from substantial membrane fouling and low degradation rate. While addressing such issues, this article also explores both conventional and modified approaches, including the use of bioelectrochemical techniques for fouling control and enhanced methane recovery. Bioplastics are designed to degrade at the end of their lifecycle, but effective management of their end-of-life phase and integration into existing organic waste management systems remain significant challenges. Some bioplastics decompose under anaerobic conditions, with the anaerobic digestion (AD) process being a potential solution for their disposal. AD is a promising technology for valorising organic wastes, enabling biomethane production, reducing carbon footprints, and promoting product circularity. This study focuses on evaluating the continuous co-digestion of bioplastics with mixed sludge from an urban wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). Polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) was the selected bioplastic, as various studies have reported its high and rapid degradation under anaerobic mesophilic conditions. PHB's biodegradability under typical WWTP anaerobic digestion conditions (35 °C, 20-day retention time) was assessed in batch tests and the results indicate that PHB degradation ranged from 68 to 75%, depending on particle size. To further explore the potential of AD for PHB valorisation, the feasibility of anaerobic co-digestion of PHB with WWTP sludge was tested on a continuous laboratory scale using two digesters: a conventional digester (CSTR) and an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). The results indicated complete degradation of PHB, which led to higher biomethanisation percentages in both digesters, rising from 58% to 70% in the AnMBR and from 44% to 72% in the CSTR. Ubiquitous microplastics (MPs) severely affect the efficiency of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AMBR) for wastewater treatment and energy recovery by inhibiting the metabolic activity of anaerobic microorganisms. The electrochemical system can not only accelerate waste metabolism but also improve microbial resistance by promoting interspecies electron transfer within the system, which has broad application potential in the remediation of MPs wastewater. This paper attempts to evaluate the effect of electrical stimulation on the efficiency of biological wastewater treatment processes containing MPs employing an electrochemical system coupled to an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (ECAMBR). The results showed that although MP exposure inhibited methanogenic performance, electrical stimulation effectively alleviated this inhibitory effect. Further analysis showed that microplastics increased cell damage and affected enzyme activity, but electrical stimulation could affect the stress response of microorganisms, leading to changes in their cell viability and enzyme activities. The 16S-rRNA sequencing indicated that the highest abundance of hydrolytic–acidogenic bacteria Firmicutes and Bacteroidota was found at the phylum level, whereas at the genus level, it was Christensenellaceae_R-7_group, and methanogens were dominated by Methylomonas, Methyloversatilis, and Methylobacter. Functional prediction analysis indicated that carbohydrate metabolism, amino acid metabolism, and energy metabolism were the dominant metabolic pathways and that electrical stimulation could enhance their activities. The first discovery of methanogens led to the formation of a new domain of life known as Archaea. The Archaea domain exhibits properties vastly different from previously known Bacteria and Eucarya domains. However, for a certain multi-step process, a syntrophic relationship between organisms from all domains is needed. This process is called methanogenesis and is defined as the biological production of methane. Different methanogenic pathways prevail depending on substrate availability and the employed order of methanogenic Archaea. Most methanogens reduce carbon dioxide to methane with hydrogen through a hydrogenotrophic pathway. For hydrogen activation, a group of enzymes called hydrogenases is required. Regardless of the methanogenic pathway, electrons are carried between microorganisms by hydrogen. Naturally occurring processes, such as methanogenesis, can be engineered for industrial use. With the growth and emergence of new industries, the amount of produced industrial waste is an ever-growing environmental problem. For successful wastewater remediation, a syntrophic correlation between various microorganisms is needed. The composition of microorganisms depends on wastewater type, organic loading rates, anaerobic reactor design, pH, and temperature. The last step of anaerobic wastewater treatment is production of biomethane by methanogenesis, which is thought to be a cost-effective means of energy production for this renewable biogas. In recent years, TiO 2 NPs have attracted great attention among the semiconductors because of stability, commercial availability, and ease of preparation. For this reason, NPs are widely used in wastewater treatment and membrane bioreactor (MBRs) In this study, the effect of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticle material was investigated on both the landfill leachate (LFL) treatment and membrane fouling performance. The system performance was evaluated for under varying TiO 2 concentrations (50–300 mg/L TiO 2), constant HRT (24 h), and constant backwashing (5 min)-relaxing (0.5 min) in AnMBR. The optimum conditions were determined as 300 mg/L TiO 2 and the corresponding to COD, Color, TOC and TN removal efficiencies were observed as 55 %, 23 %, 22 %, 30 %, respectively. The best membrane performance was observed at 300 mg/L TiO 2 corresponding to membrane fouling rate as 0.01 mbar/min. TiO 2 addition significantly mitigated membrane fouling (75 % decrease) for AnMBR. Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes and Proteobacteria have been observed to be the dominant species in LFL and MBRs. The bacterial species responsible for membrane fouling were determined as Alphaproteobacteria, Sphingobacteria and Flavobacteria. The addition of TiO 2 was determined membrane fouling decreased in AnMBR. As a result of TiO 2 NPs were observed to thin the cake layer and postpone membrane fouling and filtration. In this study, an upflow anaerobic packed-bed reactor (UAPB) produced biobutanol from the main byproduct of biodiesel plants, commonly known as glycerol. Currently, butanol production is mostly limited to pure cultures and sterilized feedstocks. Using glycerol wastes from biodiesel production demands a new paradigm because sterilization is not economically feasible for the elevated amount of glycerol generated by the biodiesel industry. Different microbial consortia were evaluated as inoculum sources to convert glycerol to butanol. In the first stage, operations were carried out with an average organic loading rate (OLR) of 13 g COD L−1 d−1. Kefir grains, sucrose auto-fermentation consortium, and heat-treated anaerobic sludge produced 16.7, 48.5, and 12.8 mg of butanol per gram of chemical oxygen demand (COD), respectively. Besides butanol production, a significant amount of ethanol (241.5 mg g−1 COD), acetate (30.3 mg g−1 COD), and butyrate (183.4 mg g−1 COD) were generated with glycerol processed by sucrose auto-fermentation consortium. In the second stage, the organic loading rates of 6.5, 13.0, and 26.0 g COD L−1 d−1 were applied to the UAPB reactor inoculated with sucrose auto-fermentation consortium. The OLR of 13.0 g COD L−1 d−1 yielded the highest production of butanol (41.5 mg g−1 COD) and generated other valuable co-products such as butyrate (246.1 mg g−1 COD), acetate (37.3 mg g−1 COD), and propionate (19.6 mg g−1 COD). Precise control of operational parameters in anaerobic digestion reactors is crucial to avoid imbalances that could affect biomethane production and alterations in the microbiota. Restoring the methanogenic microbiota after a failure is essential for recovering methane production, yet no published strategies exist for this recovery. In this study, we restored the methanogenic microbiota in an anaerobic SBR reactor that operates with both biofilm and suspended biomass simultaneously, aiming to treat tequila vinasses. Four strategies were evaluated for restoring the methanogenic microbiota: reducing the initial vinasse concentration, increasing the reaction time (RT), adjusting the carbon/nitrogen (C/N) ratio, and progressively increasing the initial vinasse concentration. Among these, adjusting the C/N ratio emerged as a critical parameter for restoring organic matter removal efficiency and reestablishing methanogenic microbiota. The operational conditions under which the methanogenic activity and microbiota were restored were as follows: Operating the A-SBR with an initial vinasse concentration of 60%, an RT of 168 h, a pH of 6.9 ± 0.2, a temperature of 35 ± 2 °C, and a C/N ratio adjusted to 100/1.9 resulted in stable COD removal efficiency of 93 ± 3% over a year and a high percentage of methanogenic microorganisms in both the suspended microbiota (69%) and biofilm (52%). The normalized methane production (0.332 NL CH4/g CODr) approached the theoretical maximum value (0.35 L CH4/g CODr) after restoring the population and methanogenic activity within the reactor. The global shift towards sustainable waste management has led to an intensified exploration of co-digestion and co-treatment of sewage and organic waste using anaerobic reactors. This review advocates for an integrated approach where organic waste is treated along with the sewage stream, as a promising solution to collect, treat, and dispose of organic waste, thereby reducing the environmental and economic burden on municipalities. Various efforts, ranging from laboratory to full-scale studies, have been undertaken to assess the feasibility and impacts of co-digestion or co-management of sewage and organic waste, using technologies such as up-flow anaerobic sludge blankets or anaerobic membrane bioreactors. However, there has been no consensus on a standardized definition of co-digestion, nor a comprehensive understanding of its impacts. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of the state-of-the-art in liquid anaerobic co-digestion systems, which typically operate at 1.1% total solids. The research aims to investigate how the integration of organic waste into mainstream anaerobic-based sewage treatment plants has the potential to enhance the sustainability of both sewage and organic waste management. In addition, utilizing the surplus capacity of existing anaerobic reactors leads to significant increases in methane production ranging from 190 to 388% (v/v). However, it should be noted that certain challenges may arise, such as the necessity for the development of tailored strategies and regulatory frameworks to enhance co-digestion practices and address the inherent challenges. In the framework of a circular economy, wastewater treatment should be oriented toward processes that allow the recovery of the resources present in the wastewater while ensuring good effluent quality. Nitrogen recovery is usually carried out in streams concentrated in this nutrient because these high concentrations facilitate nitrogen valorization. On the other hand, the mainstream of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) has a high potential for nitrogen recovery, but it is not usually considered because it is hard to manage due to its low nitrogen concentration. To solve this problem and facilitate the recovery of nitrogen in the mainstream, this work proposes ion exchange with zeolites as a stage of ammonium concentration, to provide a nitrogen-concentrated stream that could be valorized by another technology, while obtaining a nitrogen-free effluent. The working stream, the permeate of an AnMBR process in the mainstream, has suitable characteristics to be treated in an ion exchange column (free of suspended solids and with very low organic matter content). To this end, the effect of the working flow rate (17.5 to 4.4 BV/h) and the ammonium concentration (54 to 17 mg NH4-N/L) on the adsorption capacity of the zeolite in the loading phase was evaluated. The adsorption curves were fitted to three mathematical models: Thomas, Bohart–Adams, and Yoon–Nelson. The effect of the regeneration flow rate (from 8.7 to 2.2 BV/h) and the regenerant concentration (NaOH at 0.2, 0.1, and 0.05 M) on regeneration capacity and efficiency were also studied. Pollution from animal wastes is a threat to water resources. Insufficient treatment and disposal of animal manure results in potential runoff and transport of waste into surface and groundwater and ultimately contaminating drinking water in many rural areas. The goal of this research is to assess the efficiency of an innovative configuration of anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) and constructed wetlands (CWs) to treat animal waste, providing a sustainable, resilient management system for agricultural wastewaters. Numerical simulations were conducted to assess the capacity of CWs to remove nutrients from AnMBR permeate with varying ammonium (NH4+), phosphorus (P), and chemical oxygen demand (COD) concentrations and temperature conditions (10°C, 20°C, 30°C, and 40°C). The simulations were conducted using HYDRUS software with the Constructed Wetland 2D (CW2D) module. The results supported the assumption that CWs can be an efficient polishing step for AnMBR permeate, removing more than 90% of NH4+ and P, which was further confirmed with experimental measurements. The effectiveness of this design relies on the natural processes for nutrient removal that can be optimized by altering nutrient and COD loading rates from the AnMBR system. When AnMBR systems face unexpected failures or technical issues, the integration of CWs provides a reliable contingency plan, ensuring a practical and resilient wastewater treatment process. The findings from this research offer significant promise for developing cost-effective and environmentally friendly solutions for the treatment and reuse of concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) wastewater through a hybrid treatment configuration, contributing to the broader goals of decentralized wastewater treatment and agricultural practices. The existence of an anaerobic bioreactor that produces biogas can provide two benefits. First, it can produce sustainable energy. Second, it helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and waste. Based on these two advantages, obstacles to its implementation must be overcome to realize regional energy security. The research method used is descriptive-quantitative and enriched by descriptive-qualitative by FGD, through in-depth interviews, direct observation of the field, and interviews of related parties. This research is to find the source of the problem for the gap that occurs between the real condition of biogas potential that is utilized and wasted as emissions. Based on the results of this study, there are three main obstacles that need to be optimized. The first is the difficulty of raw materials because most of them are imported. The second challenge is the price difference because the power purchase agreement was calculated before the new law came out. And third, the lack of government support. Based on these three constraints, the optimization strategy carried out is: first, facilitate regulations in the ease of procurement of supporting materials. Second, the government regulates and straightens regulations related to price differences. Third, central and local governments should actively support development by increasing training, education, and capacity building for policymaking and analysis in the field of new and renewable energy. • Monitored microbial shifts during anaerobic degradation of two types of food waste. • Sampling of both leachate and solids revealed microbial composition differences. • Substrates led to different population dynamics and methanogenic pathways. A key question in anaerobic microbial ecology is how microbial communities develop over different stages of waste decomposition and whether these changes are specific to waste types. We destructively sampled over time 26 replicate bioreactors cultivated on fruit/vegetable waste (FVW) and meat waste (MW) based on pre-defined waste components and composition. To characterize community shifts, we examined 16S rRNA genes from both the leachate and solid fractions of the waste. Waste decomposition occurred faster in FVW than MW, as accumulation of ammonia in MW reactors led to inhibition of methanogenesis. We identified population succession during different stages of waste decomposition and linked specific populations to different waste types. Community analyses revealed underrepresentation of methanogens in the leachate fractions, emphasizing the importance of consistent and representative sampling when characterizing microbial communities in solid waste. AbstractThis study explores a novel enzymatic pretreatment approach in anaerobic reactors for dairy wastewater, using lipase AY Amano to enhance methane production and modify microbial and archaeal community composition. Batch and semi-batch reactors with a total volume of 2000 mL were used to treat dairy wastewater with initial COD of 2000 and 15,000 mg L−1, respectively. In a new novel approach, the semi-batch reactors underwent a three-phase operation: 30 days of acclimation, 30 days of rest, and 30 days of active operation. Adding lipase (0.05% wv−1) as a pretreatment significantly increased methane yield over the 90 days by 135–138% compared with the control (without enzyme addition). The organic loading rate reached 0.22 g COD day−1 L−1. Furthermore, 30 days after the end of the semi-batch reactor approach (120 days from the start), reusing sludge in batch reactors increased methane yield by 114–122% compared to the control. This increase was linked to the emergence and shift of new methanogenic communities within the sludge. Integrating hydrolytic enzymes into the anaerobic treatment enhances performance and sustainability by fostering methanogen-enriched microbial communities. Background: Microbial anaerobic metabolism is a key driver of biogeochemical cycles, influencing ecosystem function and health of both natural and engineered environments. However, the temporal dynamics of the intricate interactions between microorganisms and the organic metabolites are still poorly understood. Leveraging metagenomic and metabolomic approaches, we unveiled the principles governing microbial metabolism during a 96-day anaerobic bioreactor experiment. Results: During the turnover and assembly of metabolites, homogeneous selection was predominant, peaking at 84.05% on day 12. Consistent dynamic coordination between microbes and metabolites was observed regarding their composition and assembly processes. Our findings suggested that microbes drove deterministic metabolite turnover, leading to consistent molecular conversions across parallel reactors. Moreover, due to the more favorable thermodynamics of N-containing organic biotransformations, microbes preferentially carried out sequential degradations from N-containing to S-containing compounds. Similarly, the metabolic strategy of C18 lipid-like molecules could switch from synthesis to degradation due to nutrient exhaustion and thermodynamical disadvantage. This indicated that community biotransformation thermodynamics emerged as a key regulator of both catabolic and synthetic metabolisms, shaping metabolic strategy shifts at the community level. Furthermore, the co-occurrence network of microbes-metabolites was structured around microbial metabolic functions centered on methanogenesis, with CH4 as a network hub, connecting with 62.15% of total nodes as 1st and 2nd neighbors. Microbes aggregate molecules with different molecular traits and are modularized depending on their metabolic abilities. They established increasingly positive relationships with high-molecular-weight molecules, facilitating resource acquisition and energy utilization. This metabolic complementarity and substance exchange further underscored the cooperative nature of microbial interactions. Conclusions: All results revealed three key rules governing microbial anaerobic degradation. We report the relationship between enrichment of adapted populations and enhancement of community functional resilience in methanogenic bioreactors. Although previous studies have shown the positive effects of acclimation, this work directly investigated the relationships between microbiome dynamics and performance of anaerobic co-digesting reactors in response to different levels of an environmental perturbation (loading of grease interceptor waste [GIW]). Using the methanogenic microbiome from a full-scale digester, we developed eight sets of microbial communities in triplicate using different feed sources. These substrate-specific microbiomes were then exposed to three independent disturbance events of low-, mid- and high-GIW loading rates. This approach allowed us to directly attribute differences in community responses to differences in community composition. Despite identical inocula, environment (digester operation, substrate loading rate, and feeding patterns) and general whole-community function (methane production and effluent quality) during the cultivation period, different substrates led to different microbial community assemblies. Lipid pre-acclimation led to enrichment of a pool of specialized populations, along with thriving of sub-dominant communities. The enrichment of these populations improved functional resilience and process performance when exposed to a low level of lipid-rich perturbation compared with less-acclimated communities. At higher levels of perturbation, the communities were not able to recover methanogenesis, indicating a loading limit to the resilience response. Anaerobic treatment of industrial wastewater using upflow anaerobic reactors is an extended trend due to its high efficiency and biogas production potential, but its implementation in some sectors is limited due to the complexity and toxicity of the wastewaters. In this study, a two‐stage expanded granular sludge bed (EGSB) reactors system has been investigated at both bench and pilot scale for the treatment of complex and toxic real wastewater from a petrochemical industry. The effect of different operational parameters including organic loading rate (OLR), hydraulic retention time (HRT) and influent characteristics over COD removal and biogas production and composition have been studied. Additionally, biomass specific methanogenic activity (SMA) and wastewater toxicity have been evaluated after long‐term operation. Optimum total HRT of 24 h has been determined resulting in total COD and SO42− removal of 56.30 ± 5.25% and 31.68 ± 14.71%, respectively, at pilot scale, and average biogas production of 93.47 ± 34.92 NL/day with 67.01 ± 10.23 %CH4 content and 5210.11 ± 6802.27 ppmv of H2S. SMA and toxicity tests have confirmed inhibitory and toxic effects of wastewater over anaerobic biomass with average maximum inhibition of 65.34% in the unacclimated anaerobic inoculum while chronic toxicity produced a decrease of an order of magnitude in SMA after 600 days of operation. This study demonstrates the feasibility of applying an anaerobic treatment to this wastewater using EGSB reactors between a 0.97–1.74 gCOD/L/day OLR range. Nonetheless, periodic reinoculation would be necessary for long‐term operation due to chronic toxicity of the wastewater exerted on the anaerobic biomass. Digitally controlled reactors can optimize biological reactions and process control through a neural network system. This study reports on the design, fabrication, and automation of a laboratory‐scale anaerobic reactor for the management of agrifood byproducts and bioenergy recovery. The process described here can digitally control the operational parameters, which is beneficial for stable methane production. The proposed process comprises the digital measurement of temperature, pH, humidity, biogas volume, and methane composition by integrating the data in a processor module. The proposed automated reactor can assist significantly in controlling and monitoring the anaerobic digestion process, providing decision making during waste management and bioenergy recovery. A case study is described with the application of automated reactors in a pilot‐scale plant, operated with the flow of 8 m3 slaughterhouse wastewater per day and a biogas production of 10 m3 h−1. The biofilter used is a simple technology in anaerobic digestion to remove pollutants from the substrate to enhance biogas production and nutrient effluent, which can be used as liquid organic fertiliser. This study aims to determine the effect of using a biofilter to improve biogas production and biogas effluent as an organic fertiliser material. The results show that the highest methane concentration is 60.64% at a dosage 200 L·day-1. The total solid (TS) content of biogas effluent exhibits a decrease of approximately 44% across all substrate doses, with respective percentages of TS of 0.16%, 0.03%, 0.025%, and 0.034% for 50 L·day-1, 100 L·day-1, 150 L·day-1, and 200 L·day-1, respectively. The use of biofilters in an ABR can significantly enhance the quality of biogas effluent, rendering it suitable for use as a liquid organic fertiliser. By capturing and biodegrading pollutants, the biofilter component can further enrich the nutrient content of the effluent, which already contains essential nutrients due to the anaerobic conditions and compartmentalised design of the ABR. The nutrient content in the biogas effluent mix with nutrition (AB mix) namely; N-total 262.5 mg·L-1, P-available 0.399 mg·L-1, Ca 4.08 mg·L-1, Mg 25.24 mg·L-1, Cu 0.032 mg·L-1, and Fe 13.09 mg·L-1 follows the standard organic fertiliser of the Minister of Agriculture of Indonesia. The bio-degumming method focused research interest on green degumming technology in the textile sector, addressing environmental pollution, water usage and energy consumption caused by chemical degumming methods while enhancing fiber quality. The application of recent developments in the chemical degumming method of fiber remains a challenge for environmental protection. The novel spiral symmetry stream anaerobic bioreactor was employed in a system that integrates the ramie degumming process and reduces wastewater generation. This study analyzed the effect of liquor ratios on the water quality indicators, fiber quality and microbial community composition. After this study, the effluent chemical oxygen demand concentration, pH and ammonia nitrogen were 264.2 ± 114.2, 7.2 ± 0.1 and 7.4 ± 4.8 mg/L, respectively. This shows a mean chemical oxygen demand removal rate of 55.7 ± 11.8%, which is over 79% higher than previous bio-degumming methods. The fiber quality met the ramie fine dry hemp standard requirements. The high-throughput sequencing results revealed that the microbial community adapted to this process. The relative abundance of dominant microbes (Bacteroidetes and Methanosaeta), which perform biodegradation and methane production, was present. Addressing the pollution problems caused by improper disposal of effluents and wastes from pharmaceutical companies and medical facilities are important for the safety of humans and animals. This work highlights the challenges and developments in medical and pharmaceutical waste management practices across the world as well as their potential for bio-energy production. It involves the study of these waste properties, their impacts on the ecosystem and treatment or recycling methods. Various studies have shown that successes have been recorded in converting some antibiotic contaminated wastewater to biogas in advance anaerobic digesters. Moreover, not all medical wastes are degradable, the use of placentas, hospital cotton waste, human urine, waste blood and surgery waste has been used in biogas plants built at close proximity to hospitals, in some cases. However, such plants are few and are only located in Tanzania, India and Philippines, among others to generate biogas to power hospitals, boil hot water needed by patients and for cooking. This is because the level of awareness as regards the dangers associated with indiscriminate disposal of medical and pharmaceutical waste is low and hence the development of waste disposal policy by countries is often overlooked. The implication of this is the spread of diseases in affected areas which can results in epidemics. It is therefore necessary to formulate policies that allow the harnessing of these wastes to biogas/ bioenergy or the creation of better waste management practices that is environmentally safe. Corn steep liquor is a waste product from the process of treating corn grain for starch extraction. It is used as a substrate in anaerobic digestion with simultaneous hydrogen and methane production in a cascade of two anaerobic bioreactors. For process research and optimisation, adequate mathematical models are required. So, the authors aim to present a high-quality model of the corn steep liquor process for the sequential production of H2 and CH4. This paper proposes a technique for identifying the best mathematical model of the process using the metaheuristics crow search algorithm (CSA). The CSA was applied for the first time to mathematical modelling of the considered two-stage anaerobic digestion process, using real experimental data. Based on the analysis of the numerical data from the model parameter identification procedures, the influence of the main CSA parameters—the flight length, fl, and the awareness probability, AP—was investigated. Applying classical statistical tests and an innovative approach, InterCriteria Analysis, recommendations about the optimal CSA parameter tuning were proposed. The best CSA algorithm performance was achieved for the AP = 0.05, fl = 3.0, followed by AP = 0.10, fl = 2.5, and AP = 0.15, fl = 3.0. The optimal tuning of the CSA parameters resulted in a 29% improvement in solution accuracy. Surfactants are organic compounds capable of altering the surface or interfacial tension of a system; they alter the hormonal system of aquatic organisms and can penetrate porous materials, disperse solid particles, emulsify oils and fats or produce foam when agitated. They are used in the manufacture of cleaning and personal hygiene products, manufacturing of products with agricultural, industrial and commercial applications. But they are highly polluting due to their special chemical composition, they cause eutrophication problems in natural bodies of water due to the amount discharged and the frequency with which they are discharged, in addition to affecting ecosystems. One of the most used anionic surfactants in the manufacture of commercial detergents due to its excellent detersive properties and low cost, is LAS. The objective of this research was to evaluate the effect of the concentration and organic loading rate of the anionic surfactant "LAS" on the performance of a two-stage anaerobic reactors system for its simultaneous biodegradation. The results showed that both at concentrations of 200 mg/L (experiment V) and 300 mg/L of "LAS" (experiment VI), the acidogenic reactor showed greater robustness in the biodegradation (86.7 and 55%) at an organic loading rate of 5.92 ± 0.04 and 6.8 ± 0.09 kgCOD/m3.d; the methanogenic reactor was more sensitive to the presence of the surfactant (experiments V and VI), biodegrading it by 13.8 and 14.3% with respect to the LAS remaining in the effluent of the acidogenic reactor with which it was fed, to 3.56 ± 0.02 and 4.48 ± 0.15 kgCOD/m3.d respectively. The swine industry generates millions of gallons (thousands of cubic meters) of wastewater every day, posing significant environmental risk due to high concentrations of organics and nutrients. This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of attached-growth anaerobic bioreactors for treating swine wastewater by utilizing sulfate-reducing bacteria, focusing on the impact of chemical oxygen demand (COD)/sulfate mass ratios on organics degradation. A series of lab-scale anaerobic bioreactors were employed to treat swine wastewater for a 14-day period. The study evaluated changes in pH, acidity, alkalinity, COD, sulfate, and various nutrients along with total suspended solids (TSS) and volatile suspended solids (VSS) before and after treatment. At a COD/sulfate mass ratio of 2:1, the bioreactors achieved optimum removal efficiencies of 80% for TSS, 83% for VSS, 86–88% for COD, 82–87% for sulfate, 73% for sulfide, and 73% for sulfite. The nutrient removal efficiency was 67% for nitrate and 72% for nitrite. The acidity and alkalinity were effectively controlled, with alkalinity values reaching up to 2161 ± 92.5 mg/L and pH within the range of 7–7.24. The findings demonstrated that anaerobic bioreactor at a COD/sulfate mass ratio of 2:1 significantly enhanced the degradation of organic matter coupling with sulfate reduction in swine wastewater, providing an efficient and sustainable treatment method. BACKGROUND: Dyes present in textile wastewater can pose various environmental problems, including toxicity, carcinogenicity and mutagenicity, when released into receiving environments. Sulfidogenic bacteria play a crucial role in wastewater treatment by reducing sulfate and producing sulfide through the utilization of organic compounds in water. The resulting sulfide often transfers its electrons to another electron acceptor. This study focused on the treatment of real textile wastewater using an up‐flow sulfidogenic column bioreactor. RESULTS: The reactor was acclimated to sulfate‐reducing conditions when influent chemical oxygen demand and sulfate concentrations were 1742 and 2000 mg L−1, respectively. Subsequently, a gradual transition was made from sulfate‐reducing conditions to dye‐reducing conditions. Throughout the study, the hydraulic retention time was maintained at 1 day. CONCLUSION: The influent dye concentration was 2722 Pt‐Co, and an impressive dye removal efficiency of approximately 90 ± 2% was achieved. This corresponds to a removal rate of 2450 Pt‐Co L−1 day−1. Although the sulfide concentration in the reactor decreased in the last period, investigating the extent to which this sulfide participates in the dye removal may expand the use of sulfidogenic reactors in the treatment of real textile industry wastewater. © 2024 The Author(s). Anaerobic wastewater treatment technology has been intensively and extensively investigated in the industry and scientific research. Inspired by the advantages of multi-stage and multi-phase anaerobic reactor technology (SMPA) in recent years, a three-stage anaerobic reactor (3S-AR) was designed and applied to treat poplar chemical–mechanical pulp wastewater, and various operation parameters, including the volume loading rate (VLR), hydraulic retention time (HRT), ascending velocity, reflux ratio, pH and temperature of the 3S-AR, were optimized to evaluate the reactor's removal efficiency for poplar wastewater. The properties of anaerobic granular sludge and the composition of wastewater were also characterized to assess microorganism growth and pollutant migration. Results show that the COD removal rate was over 75% with a volume loading rate range of 15–25 gCOD/(L·d) in the 3S-AR; the hydraulic retention time was also found to be an important factor affecting the performance of the 3S-AR reactor. The volume loading rate and degradation efficiency of the 3S-AR reactor are higher than those of the up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. Microorganism separation can be achieved in the 3S-AR, which is conducive to the growth and methanogenesis activity of bacteria, thereby leading to enhanced removal and buffering efficiency. After treatment in the 3S-AR, the main pollutants of poplar wastewater were benzene aromatic acids and long-chain esters, which do no biodegrade easily; in contrast, most of the fatty acid substances with small molecules were completely degraded. Background: Despite rapid advances in genomic-resolved metagenomics and remarkable explosion of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), the function of uncultivated anaerobic lineages and their interactions in carbon mineralization remain largely uncertain, which has profound implications in biotechnology and biogeochemistry. Results: In this study, we combined long-read sequencing and metatranscriptomics-guided metabolic reconstruction to provide a genome-wide perspective of carbon mineralization flow from polymers to methane in an anaerobic bioreactor. Our results showed that incorporating long reads resulted in a substantial improvement in the quality of metagenomic assemblies, enabling the effective recovery of 132 high-quality genomes meeting stringent criteria of minimum information about a metagenome-assembled genome (MIMAG). In addition, hybrid assembly obtained 51% more prokaryotic genes in comparison to the short-read-only assembly. Metatranscriptomics-guided metabolic reconstruction unveiled the remarkable metabolic flexibility of several novel Bacteroidales-affiliated bacteria and populations from Mesotoga sp. in scavenging amino acids and sugars. In addition to recovering two circular genomes of previously known but fragmented syntrophic bacteria, two newly identified bacteria within Syntrophales were found to be highly engaged in fatty acid oxidation through syntrophic relationships with dominant methanogens Methanoregulaceae bin.74 and Methanothrix sp. bin.206. The activity of bin.206 preferring acetate as substrate exceeded that of bin.74 with increasing loading, reinforcing the substrate determinantal role. Anaerobic co‐digestion using an anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor (AnDMBR) can separate the sludge retention time and hydraulic retention time, retaining the biomass for efficient degradation and the use of less expensive large pore‐size membrane materials and more sustainable dynamic membranes (DMs). Therefore, anaerobic co‐digestion of toilet blackwater (BW) and kitchen waste (KW) using an AnDMBR was hypothesized to increase the potential for co‐digestion. Here, the efficiency and stability of AnDMBR in anaerobic co‐digestion of toilet BW and KW were investigated. DM morphology and structural characteristics, filtration properties, and composition, as well as membrane contamination and membrane regeneration mechanisms, were investigated. Average daily biogas yields of the reactor in two membrane cycles before and after cleaning were 788.67 and 746.09 ml/g volatile solids, with average methane content of 66.64% and 67.27% and average COD removal efficiencies of 82.03% and 80.96%, respectively. The results showed that the bioreactor obtained good performance and stability. During the stabilization phase of the DM operation, the flux was maintained between 43.65 and 65.15 L/m2/h. 2, 4, 6-Triclorphenol is a halogenated aromatic compound with toxic, volatile, and odor properties. The anaerobic processes are superior to aerobic processes due to better dehalogenation of 2, 4, 6-Triclorphenol and easier control of releasing this toxic and odorous chemical compound into the air. However, anaerobic processes have lower reaction rates than aerobic processes. In this study, a rotating biological bed was used in an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor to increase the rate of anaerobic reactions. The anaerobic sequencing batch reactor equipped with a rotating biological bed removed more than 99% of the 2, 4, 6-Triclorphenol, 96% of total phenolic compounds, and more than 86% of its chemical oxidation demand in 2, 4, 6-Triclorphenol concentration of 430 mg/L and hydraulic retention time of 12 h. With the biological degradation of the 2, 4, 6-Triclorphenol by an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor Equipped with a rotating biological bed, more than 92% of the chlorine atoms in the structure of this compound were released into the effluent. Therefore, almost complete dehalogenation of 2, 4, 6-Triclorphenol is performed by this process. By removing the rotating biological bed from the anaerobic sequencing batch reactor equipped with a rotating biological bed, the bioreactor efficiency declined rapidly and progressed to failure. The role of rotating biological bed in dehalogenation (32%), biological degradation (10%), and mineralization (83%) of 2, 4, 6-Triclorphenol are very important. Therefore, a rotating biological bed has a significant role in promoting an anaerobic sequencing batch reactor. The anaerobic sequencing batch reactor equipped with a rotating biological bed can remove higher concentrations of 2, 4, 6-Triclorphenol at a lower hydraulic retention time than previously studied processes. This study compared the behavior of the biomass in two fixed-film anaerobic reactors operated under equivalent organic loading rates but at different temperatures, i.e., 30 °C (RMM) and 55 °C (RMT). The reactors were fed with sugarcane vinasse and molasses (both fermented) in a simulation of sequential periods of season and off-season. The dynamics of biomass growth and retention, as well as the microbial composition, were assessed throughout 171 days of continuous operation, coupled with an additional 10-day test assessing the microbial activity in the bed region. Despite the different inoculum sources used (mesophilic granular vs. thermophilic flocculent sludge types), the biomass growth yield was identical (0.036–0.038 g VSS g−1COD) in both systems. The retention rates (higher in RMT) were regulated according to the initial amount of biomass provided in the inoculation, resulting in similar amounts of total retained biomass (46.8 vs. 43.3 g VSS in RMT and RMM) and biomass distribution patterns (30–35% in the feeding zone) at the end of the operation. Meanwhile, hydrogenotrophic methanogenesis mediated by Methanothermobacter coupled to syntrophic acetate oxidation prevailed in RMT, while the Methanosaeta-mediated acetoclastic pathway occurred in RMM. The results show that different anaerobic consortia can behave similarly in quantitative terms when subjected to equivalent organic loads, regardless of the prevailing methane-producing pathway. The community grows and reaches a balance (or a given cell activity level) defined by the amount of substrate available for conversion. Biogas upgrading via biomethanation has been extensively studied recently, but the influence of organic loading rate on process performance remains to be fully understood. This is particularly significant because both organic loading rate and hydrogen injection can lead to volatile fatty acid accumulation during anaerobic digestion. This study investigated the impact of a wide range of organic loading rates (from 1.25 to 3.25 g VS/L/d) on hydrogen consumption rates, organic acid accumulation, and microbial communities during in situ biomethanation. It also provided kinetics data and metabolite production data for different control reactors, including anaerobic digestion, ex situ biomethanation, and endogenous control reactors. Hydrogen was injected into parallel batch reactors using digestate from a semi-continuous lab-scale reactor subjected to increasing organic loading rates (1.25–3.25 g VS/L/d) as an inoculum. The inoculum was well adapted to each tested organic loading rate. The batch experiments were replicated following a 12 h hydrogen starvation period to assess the stability of hydrogen consumption rates. High organic loading rate values resulted in increased hydrogen consumption rates, peaking at 68 mg COD/L/h at an organic loading rate of 3.25 g VS/L/d (maximum value tested), with no significant organic acid accumulation despite the high hydrogen partial pressures. The hydrogen consumption rates were maintained after the starvation period. Furthermore, the addition of an organic substrate did not impact the hydrogen consumption rate (i.e., the in situ and ex situ rates were similar). A higher organic loading rate resulted in higher relative abundances of hydrogenotrophic methanogens (i.e., Methanospirillum sp.). This study highlights that increasing the organic loading rate can accelerate the rate of hydrogen consumption during in situ biomethanation, consequently reducing both capital and operational costs. The anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) is a promising technology for not only water reclamation but also virus removal; however, the virus removal efficiency of AnMBR has not been fully investigated. Additionally, the removal efficiency estimation requires datasets of virus concentration in influent and effluent, but its monitoring is not easy to perform for practical operation because the virus quantification process is generally time-consuming and requires specialized equipment and trained personnel. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to identify the key, monitorable variables in AnMBR and establish the data-driven models using the selected variables to predict virus removal efficiency. We monitored operational and environmental conditions of AnMBR in Sendai, Japan and measured virus concentration once a week for six months. Spearman's rank correlation analysis revealed that the pH values of influent and mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) were strongly correlated with the log reduction value of pepper mild mottle virus, indicating that electrostatic interactions played a dominant role in AnMBR virus removal. Among the candidate models, the random forest model using selected variables including influent and MLSS pH outperformed the others. The aim of this study was to determine the impact of using mineral fertilizers on biogas production from vegetable waste. A mixture of wastes from a fruit and vegetable processing plant was used in the experiments, together with two commercial fertilizers, Substral and Agrecol. Experiments were conducted in 5-L anaerobic reactors operated semi-continuously at 35 °C. The application of Substral at a dose of 1 g/kg increased the production of methane and hydrogen by 40% and 78%, up to 420 LCH4/kgVS and 34 LH2/kgVS, respectively. In contrast, with Agrecol supplementation, the average yields of methane and hydrogen were 365 LCH4/kgVS and 27.7 LH2/kgVS, respectively. The beneficial effects of supplementation were due to the compositions of the mineral fertilizers, which contained nutrients and metals that stimulate the growth of microorganisms and build the structures of enzymes. The addition of mineral fertilizers changed the microbial communities of the digestates. At a family level, the main bacteria groups reported were Lactobacillaceae, Anaerolineaceae, Clostridiaceae, Synergistaceae, and Bacteroidetes vadin HA17. The predominant methanogens were Methanosarcinaceae and Methanosaetaceae. There was no clear relationship between the supplementation type and dose and the growth of individual microbial groups. However, the addition of mineral fertilizers increased the relative abundance of Lactobacillaceae and Anaerolineaceae, which are responsible for the hydrolysis and fermentation of polysaccharides into lactic acid, hydrogen, and acetic acid. Anaerobic co-digestion (AcoD) may be an interesting option to improve the operating conditions of anaerobic reactors used in vinasse treatment and provide an alternative for dairy cattle wastewater (DCW) management in regions near to ethanol industries. This work aimed to evaluate the effect of AcoD of sugarcane vinasse with DCW (84.8% and 15.2% of COD, respectively) in two up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors (UASB—R1 and R2) in series. The improvements in the nutritional conditions of the vinasse because of the co-digestion with the DCW, combined with effluent recirculation, provided average removals of total COD of 77% for the overall system (R1 + R2) and volumetric methane production of 0.451 m3 CH4 (m3 d)−1 for R1. From the theoretical potential of electrical power production, we verified the possibility of producing 10.65 kWh d−1 per m3 of vinasse in the UASB reactors. That is 39% of the electrical energy needed to process one ton of sugarcane. The adsorption and utilization of Fe(Ⅲ) can be impeded by precipitation in anaerobic reactors. In this study, we investigated whether the bioavailability of Fe(Ⅲ) can be enhanced by EDTA-Fe(Ⅲ), thereby improving the stability of anammox system. Fe(Ⅲ) and EDTA-Fe(Ⅲ) were added to two parallel up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactors, respectively. After 186 days of operation, when the nitrogen loading rate (NLR) was 0.8 g-N/L/d, the nitrogen removal rate (NRR) of R2 was stable at 0.675 g-N/L/d, which was higher than that of R1 at 0.557 g-N/L/d. The anammox activity of R2 reached its peak in phase Ⅲ (158.55 ± 4.53 mg-N/g-VSS/d), while the anammox activity of R1 was only 28.37 ± 5.96 mg-N/g-VSS/d. Moreover, in phase Ⅱ-Ⅴ, the bioavailability of Fe(Ⅲ) in R2 was increased by 15.63%, 38.37%, 65.90%, and 39.63%, respectively, compared with R1. The results showed that EDTA-Fe(Ⅲ) can prevent precipitation encasing anammox granular sludge, which can enhance substrate transport and Fe(Ⅲ) adsorption utilization. High throughput sequencing suggested that EDTA-Fe(Ⅲ) could better increase the abundance of anammox bacteria (AnAOB). In conclusion, this research proved that EDTA could increase the bioavailability of Fe(Ⅲ) and thereby ensuring the stability of the reactors. This study combines theoretical modeling and experimental validation to explore anaerobic digestion comprehensively. Developing a computational model is crucial for accurately simulating a digester's performance, considering various feedstocks and operational parameters. The main objective was to adapt the anaerobic digestion model 1 (ADM1) simulation code to align with the laboratory-scale anaerobic digestion reactor's specifications, especially regarding the liquid–gas transfer process. Within this computational framework, users may define model parameters and elucidate processes occurring in compartments reflecting the physical design. The model accurately predicts total concentrations of chemical oxygen demand (COD) as well as the produced biogas, with an average difference of less than 10% between experimental and simulated data. Today, the transition to renewable energy from conventional energy practices is more important than ever to establish energy security and mitigate climate change. The wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) consume a remarkable amount of energy and cause significant greenhouse gas emissions. The energy balance of WWTP can be improved by implementing energy-efficient applications such as anaerobic digestion. However, most of the existing WWTPs utilize only sewage sludge in conventional anaerobic digesters (CAD) which results in low biogas generation. Generally, co-digestion is indicated as an effective solution for the low biogas generation faced in mono-digestion. Moreover, recently, anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBR) have been promoted as a prominent alternative to CADs. This paper overviews the current situation of co-digestion applications by AnMBRs for municipal WWTPs. Furthermore, the environmental and economic aspects of these applications were reviewed. In addition to energy recovery, the anaerobic digestion of agro-industrial byproducts can also produce different high-value-added compounds. Two-stage and single-stage reactors were compared for microbial communities' selection and long-chain fatty acid (LCFA) accumulation to investigate which microbial genera are most linked to the production of these compounds. The microbial communities present in the two reactors' configuration in the steady state were characterised by 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing, while LCFAs were extracted and quantified from digestate samples by gas chromatography. The results showed the differentiation of the microbially dominant families in the two setups: Defluviitaleaceae and Clostridiaceae in the acidogenic and methanogenic reactor of the two-stage reaction respectively, while Dysgonomonadaceae in the single-stage set-up. LCFA accumulation was significantly detected only in the acidogenic reactor, with palmitic (2764 mg/kg), linoleic (1795 mg/kg) and stearic (1751 mg/kg) acids as the most abundant. The dominance of Defluviitaleaceae UCG 011, along with the low abundance of the LCFA oxidiser Syntrophomonas spp. in the acidogenic reactor, could be linked to the accumulation of such compounds. Therefore, the different microbial communities shaped by the two reactors' configuration affected the accumulation of LCFAs, indicating that the two-stage anaerobic digestion of agro-industrial byproducts was more effective than single-stage digestion. Background: Members of the Planctomycetota phylum harbour an outstanding potential for carbohydrate degradation given the abundance and diversity of carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) encoded in their genomes. However, mainly members of the Planctomycetia class have been characterised up to now, and little is known about the degrading capacities of the other Planctomycetota. Here, we present a comprehensive comparative analysis of all available planctomycetotal genome representatives and detail encoded carbohydrolytic potential across phylogenetic groups and different habitats. Results: Our in-depth characterisation of the available planctomycetotal genomic resources increases our knowledge of the carbohydrolytic capacities of Planctomycetota. We show that this single phylum encompasses a wide variety of the currently known CAZyme diversity assigned to glycoside hydrolase families and that many members encode a versatile enzymatic machinery towards complex carbohydrate degradation, including lignocellulose. We highlight members of the Isosphaerales, Pirellulales, Sedimentisphaerales and Tepidisphaerales orders as having the highest encoded hydrolytic potential of the Planctomycetota. Furthermore, members of a yet uncultivated group affiliated to the Phycisphaerales order could represent an interesting source of novel lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases to boost lignocellulose degradation. Surprisingly, many Planctomycetota from anaerobic digestion reactors encode CAZymes targeting algal polysaccharides – this opens new perspectives for algal biomass valorisation in biogas processes. Conclusions: Our study provides a new perspective on planctomycetotal carbohydrolytic potential, highlighting distinct phylogenetic groups which could provide a wealth of diverse, potentially novel CAZymes of industrial interest. Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) are seen as a promising technology for application in water reuse schemes. However, the evidence base for their potential and efficacy in this regard is fragmented. We draw together this disparate knowledge base to offer a state of the art review of municipal wastewater treatment with AnMBRs and evaluate the technology's potential application for water reuse. Water quality regulations and standards from different regions of the world are used as performance metrics to compare and contrast the treatment performance of pilot and laboratory scale AnMBR systems reported in the literature (n = 50). Findings indicate that under stable operation, AnMBRs have the potential to produce water for agricultural reuse. However, without post-treatment, AnMBRs are incapable of delivering water that meets other non-potable reuse standards across a range of important parameters such as COD, BOD5, NH3-N and TP. Analysis of key operational parameters determine the operation of AnMBR for non-potable reuse purpose cover influent water matrix, pH, temperature, hydraulic retention time, system and membrane configuration. An assessment of candidate post-treatment technologies suggests a tradeoff between the cost and effluent quality based on the reuse application requirement. We conclude by discussing a number of challenges and limitations to the use of AnMBRs for reuse applications in order to outline a pathway to maturity for effective treatment trains.
