This paper explores how soundscape approaches can foster a collective dynamic, enabling a multidisciplinary team to reimagine the future of the oasis cities. It provides a new perspective for studying the microclimate of these unique settlements, which pose significant challenges for urban planning. Nestled within the desert, oasis cities rely on an ancient urban fabric designed to create self-sustaining microclimates. This traditional oasis urbanism demonstrates human adaptation to a harsh environment. However, modern development, with its focus on standardized designs and efficiency, threatens the ecological and social balance of these settlements. The research postulates that comfort arises from both the thermal regulations of the specific architecture and the social practices that adapt to the harsh climate. It introduces the concept of ambiance, addressing the sensory and experiential aspects of spaces. The study focuses more on a sonic approach to define urban situations that combine urban form, social practices, and sensory phenomena. The authors discuss collective experiences conducted pn 2015 in Tiznit, Morocco, and in 2016 in Nefta, Tunisia, as part of the ZERKA project funded by the Envimed program. The outcomes published in this research examine both fieldwork approaches and the theoritical reflections they inspired during the project. The sonic recordings are available on the CRESSON laboratory's Cartophonies platform, providing an immersive soundscape experience and creating a sonic archive for cities undergoing transformation.

This study explores the effects of food quality, service quality, pricing strategy, and ambiance on customer retention in Indonesian restaurants in Taiwan, with customer satisfaction as a mediating variable. This study also investigates the moderating role of cultural similarity in this relationship. A structured survey was conducted in a quantitative study design, collecting data from 400 international customers of Indonesian restaurants in Taiwan. Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) with Partial Least Squares (PLS) was used to analyze the data. The results showed that food quality and pricing strategy significantly increased customer satisfaction. In addition, service quality and ambiance had no significant contribution to customer satisfaction. Furthermore, cultural similarity strengthened the relationship between food quality and customer satisfaction. Finally, customer satisfaction had a significant effect on customer retention. This study provides important insights for Indonesian restaurant owners in Taiwan, emphasizing the important role of service quality and restaurant ambiance in addition to food quality and price to support customer satisfaction and thus increase customer retention.

Undergraduate students are a high risk population for mental health challenges. Critically, residing in a setting that fails to evoke desired emotions and perceptions may have important implications for psychological wellbeing. Although previous research has investigated the relationship between student satisfaction and architecture/building amenities, little research has investigated how the ambiance of students' residences relates to mental health. Across a pair of studies, we evaluate the relationship between actual-ideal ambiance congruency (A-IAC) and mental health outcomes and mood. In Study 1, participants completed a pair of Q-sort tasks that required them to describe both their ideal room ambiance and their current room's actual ambiance. The discrepancy between these sorts was predictive of depressive symptoms, even when controlling for key covariates (e.g., personality, health, academics). In Study 2, these results were replicated among roommate pairs using dyadic analyses, while also being predictive of anxiety symptoms. Collectively, these studies reveal a novel environmental predictor of student wellbeing that can be of value for university staff. Ultimately, these findings suggest that having the ability to create one's ideal space may prove to be beneficial and possibly protective for the mental health of undergraduate university students. The purpose of this paper is to identify the factors that influence the patronage of street food vendor in Nigeria. The data for this study was collected from 385 street food customers in northwest Nigeria, and was analyzed using multiple regression. Also, composite reliability and Average Variance Extracted were used to test the reliability and validity of the instrument. The finding shows that patronage of street food vendor is taken as a function of quality food, value for money and familiarity of the food contents. Since the industry is one of the sources of employment generation, understanding what makes people patronize them can be a contribution to the development of the literature and an important step in designing a more effective policy mechanism for economic growth. Informal sectors are under researched and most researchers delved more on formal economy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper focuses on employee engagement in a sector that transitioned from a fully governmentowned to a privatized entity while retaining the majority of the legacy staff and bringing in new employees. The electricity sector has always piqued the interest of investors due to its strategic importance to the growth and development of other sectors, particularly in developing countries. This paper investigates some of the factors that influence employee engagement in the Nigerian power and electricity subsector. The study includes 824 employees from Nigeria's downstream electricity sector. Descriptive and ordinal regression analyses were used to determine the relationships between the variables. The study reveals that parameters such as office ambiance, clear communication, tool availability, health, and safety have relationships with or impact employee engagement. As a result, organizations' management must pay attention to and improve on them in order to retain their employees and provide their best discretionary effort. This research expands on theories of engagement in the post-privatization era and investigates the influence of key drivers on employee engagement in Nigeria's downstream power sector. In this article, we wish to clarify the way of being and appearing of ambiences. First of all, by distinguishing them on the one hand from lived experiences and on the other hand from external things; then by making the hypothesis of a third mode of being which comes from what stands between the subjects and the objects and which belongs neither to the one nor to the other. Finally, our proposal aims at showing that if the atmospheres are properties of the situations even before the subjects feel them, they feel them anyway only as these intrinsic and presubjective properties. Assessing an architectural or urban ambiance remains an uncertainty in the absence of a scale for its measurement and its design. The research, specifically conducted in an oasian space, aims to innovate a pragmatic tool of evaluation and application for the conception of the architectural and urban ambiance perceived on the limits of the places’ senses and identity. The investigations, which took place on vernacular sites of great Oasian identity in Tolga, are a collection of subjects’ drawings. The ambiance, as a system of a great complexity whose value exceeds the sum of its components, is treated through the verbalization of Kevin Lynch’s mind map and the entropy of Claude Shannon’s communication theory. The analysis checked the periodicity of the appearance, the meanings of the natural identity indicators and those of the built frame on the subjects’ drawings. The syntax diagram, result of this research, forms a pragmatic vernacular reference tool for measuring and evaluating the architectural and urban ambiance in oasian space. It is a scale of natural environment, architecture and urban planning indicators, constituting an orientation table for the conception of the oasian city of today and tomorrow.

- Abstract
We aimed to identify the characteristics of the changes in the buildings and alleyways in Yeonnam-dong, Seoul, where low-rise, residential buildings are being renovated or repurposed into commercial buildings, as well as to investigate their renovations, repurposes, and sociocultural implications. Thus, we surveyed and classified 149 renovated buildings, investigated the perceptions and ambiance of the area and buildings using a trade area analysis and interviews with visitors and store owners, and uncovered the importance of renovation. Since the early gentrification, a trend of performing renovations that retained the original form of the building from the initial renovation stage was seen; this created an ambiance of nostalgia, naturalness, and authenticity, along with the urban conditions of low-rise, residential buildings in Yeonnam-dong, a representative undeveloped area. These renovated buildings reflect the social status, taste, and practice of gentrifiers, and they reveal a hybridization of the past and present, Korean circumstances and exotic cultures, and residential and commercial buildings. As commercialization progressed, renovated buildings vastly differing from the original and displaying active commercial characteristics were seen. Our findings imply that the area's early ambiance, which had an air of "distinctiveness", has lost its personality and begun to generalize. Thus, numerous gentrifiers have been replaced and several aspects of renovation have changed that the visitors are aware of. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the tertiary sector of economy, consumers have been noticed to pay great attention to dental care services as they make use of such services quite frequently and are emotionally involved in the supply process to a great extent. Among adults, the dentist-patient relationship is often governed by stress, anxiety and fear. In this study, the authors propose exposing the patient to music as a component of ambience for a set amount of time, believing that this external factor may help to alleviate stress and rethink patients' opinions of dentists. To this end, the authors used the EPOCx electroencephalogram (EEG) and conducted the pilot experimental study, where the individuals in the sample were divided into four groups: a control group, on which no intervention was exerted (G1) and three experimental groups. Subjects in G2 were exposed to music without prior notice, study participants in G3 knew the experimental protocol, and those in G4 selected their own music. Using electroencephalogram signals, the authors monitored the reactions of patients in the experimental groups, which were then compared with the signals obtained for individuals in the G1 group. The results showed significant variations for subjects exposed to music, which were most evident in the right parietal cortex, which is responsible, among other things, for the emergence of positive emotions. The Attachment Style Interview (ASI) is increasingly being used to assess parenting suitability in adoption and fostering settings. More research is needed, however, to establish how the ASI relates to parenting behaviour. This study addressed this need by examining the relations between the ASI and an observational measure of parenting behaviour in 66 women with children between the ages of one and six years in the US. The Atypical Maternal Behavior Instrument for Assessment and Classification (AMBIANCE) provided an overall assessment of five disrupted parenting behavioural dimensions: (1) intrusive/negative; (2) role confused; (3) fearful/disoriented; (4) withdrawing; and (5) affective communication errors. A secure adult attachment style was associated with optimal parenting. Two insecure attachment styles, the insecure angry–dismissive and insecure enmeshed styles, were linked to disrupted parenting behaviours. Mothers with disrupted parenting struggled to make and maintain supportive relationships with close others. In addition, they were highly mistrustful of others and evidenced psychological constraints about closeness and attitudes of anger, and extreme self-reliance or contradictory attitudes about help and self-reliance. The findings were upheld in multivariate analyses which included maternal depression and other significant demographic variables. The study provides strong support for the utility of ASI as one useful assessment tool for fostering and adoption settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Body temperature is one of the indicators of broilers' susceptibility to thermal stress, which can compromise performance. This study aimed to evaluate correlations between both the surface and rectal temperatures, besides the average weight of broilers assessed in different ages. Temperatures of broilers' back, breast, and rectum were evaluated, besides the average weight of broilers at 7, 14, 21, and 35 days old. One hundred birds were assessed for each evaluation age, and the variables were submitted to Pearson's correlation analyses. The rectal temperature had a correlation with the breast one when the birds were evaluated at 7 and 14 days old. The average weight correlated only with rectal and breast temperatures at 14 and 21 days old, respectively. The correlations between the temperatures were weak or insignificant in most of the studied ages. Therefore, the skin temperature is not a suitable parameter for measuring broilers' temperature compared to the rectal one, so the use of infrared thermometer did not prove to be a useful strategy to estimate the internal temperature of broilers. - Abstract
Drawing on fieldwork in Cuba Street, Wellington (New Zealand), the paper contributes to the emergent body of empirical qualitative studies on urban atmospheres. It explores sensory experiences in a central urban streetscape setting focussing on individual feelings and interpretations of study participants expressed through field descriptions and sketches. The findings reveal a variety of atmospheric accounts and perceptual amalgamations that kept changing while participants walked through particular spatial situations. The study discusses the influence of the built environment, the role of movement, and the notion of 'dominant' urban atmospheres. Spatial and architectural arrangements as much as participants' movement had a significant influence on their feelings and interpretations. The paper identifies 'atmospheric zones' that influenced study participants' moods while walking through them. However, while related descriptions reveal similar atmospheric accounts, not all participants shared the same experiences. Experiential descriptions were diverse, sometimes contradicting, and did not always add up to a conclusive urban atmosphere. Findings challenge the notion of 'dominant' urban atmospheres and encourage atmospheric analysis that is inclusive of multiple experiential accounts and based on diverse first-person perspectives. • Urban atmospheres keep changing while people walk through urban space. • The built environment has major influence on people's feelings and interpretations. • Not everyone experiences the same within particular 'atmospheric zones'. • Experiential descriptions do not always add up to a conclusive urban atmosphere. Aim: To review the latest qualitative literature on how the physical hospital environment affects palliative patients and their families. Background: People with a life-limiting illness may receive palliative care to improve their quality of life in hospital and may have multiple admissions as their illness progresses. Yet, despite a preference for a death at home, more than half of the dying population will receive end-of-life care in hospital. The physical hospital environment consists of ambiance, aesthetics, and architectural factors, and it is well known that the hospital's acute wards are not a homely environment. Demand is increasing for the physical environment to be improved to better meet the needs and demands of palliative and end-of-life patients and their families. Method: Combining thematic analysis and meta-ethnography methodologies, 12 international qualitative papers were analyzed and synthesized by the three authors. Results: Findings resulted in the development of the SSAFeR Place approach that incorporates the concepts that are important to palliative and end-of-life patients and their families by describing an environment within the acute or palliative care units that feels safe, is private, customizable, and accommodates family; is a space to share with others, is homelike in ambiance and aesthetics, and is conducive for reflection. The concepts of identity, belonging, and safety are connected to the notions of home. Conclusions: To provide person-centered care and to move the focus toward the palliative approach of comfort and quality of life, attention to room size, layout, aesthetics, and ambiance is needed. This article is an ethnographic exploration of the sound milieu of a psychiatric day care center for teenagers. It draws on the daily life of this place and emphasizes different ways of adjusting its sound ambiance, which is also moral and affective, as it navigates between noise relaunches and attenuations, between the moments that are too quiet and those that are boisterous. The article shows how these ambiance adjustments lure into modest attachments, i.e. the various inclinations emerging among the youths and thanks to which caregivers particularize their care work. The narrative leads to discern a way of listening: when the ambiance disposes caregivers and the teens "to lend an ear", as noises or stillness in the surroundings catch their attention. And it brings out the consequences of this form of listening in the care practice.

Lunch is an urban phenomenon relatable to people of all age groups. Nationally-legislated-free lunches for children at day-care, schools, universities and at workplace canteens have a long history in the Finnish welfare society. In this article, the meaning-making of having lunch is shown to be mainly – but not solely – rational, and the sensory and emotional information received from the environment is verbally and rationally interpreted by the interviewees. In comparison, local food events are experiential and embodied in terms of the senses. It is asked whether there are common elements between those two contexts of eating and if some of the findings from the experiential side of eating might be applied to everyday eating occasions, thus contributing to urban conviviality. We translated and modified an ambiance scale for use by (in)formal caregivers in Dutch nursing homes. We tested validity and reliability of the modified Ambiance Scale. Convenience sampling was used to enrol (in)formal caregivers in three nursing homes in the Netherlands. 104 questionnaires were filled in; 45 by informal caregivers, 46 by formal caregivers. Ten caregivers filled in the questionnaire twice for test-retest purposes. Three original items were used, and seven newly were added to form the modified Ambiance Scale. Each item consisted of an adjective pair assessing an aspect of ambiance on a scale of 1 (homelike) to 5 (institutional). Caregivers filled in the questionnaire on two different days to assess intra rater reliability. Differences in scoring between formal and informal caregivers and between original and new items were analyzed. The questionnaire was easy to comprehend and fill in. Internal consistency was good (a = 0.93). Validity was found to be good. Factor analysis demonstrated that eight items identified as one factor. No differences in scoring between the first and second assessment were found (p<.001). Formal caregivers scored ambiance more chaotic than informal caregivers did (p<.01). No differences in scoring between original and new items were found (p =.06). This study demonstrated that the modified Ambiance Scale had good internal consistency, moderate replicability and both informal and formal caregivers' overall ratings were comparable. The modified Ambiance Scale is a valid, reliable and easy to use tool to assess ambiance in nursing home settings. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Relating unique identity of product with consumer buying behavior is not so straight forward. Many factors need to be studied in order to investigate this relationship. This study was conducted to see the direct effects of various marketing elements including brand name, service quality, food price and the ambient factors on customer perception about the restaurant image as well as the moderating influence of consumers' personality traits on such relationship. Data was collected from two hundred and forty customers in six well known restaurants of Peshawar in order to examine the hypothesized relationships. The findings of the study support the hypothesized relationship between the study variables and hence all the hypotheses of the study are supported. The study findings particularly the moderating role of personality traits of restaurant customers' in building customers' restaurant perception is of immense importance for academicians in general and restaurant management in particular. The study also presents valuable future research directions which will further this inquiry in future. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

While discussions about noise at airports usually focus on the impact aircraft have on neighbouring communities, a new conversation is emerging around the impact noise has on airport ambiance, and how satisfaction and revenue may be diminished. Left unmanaged, excess noise can grow to an enormous proportion and range and negatively affect the guest experience while adding little intended value. This paper discusses how airports are fishing for opportunities to improve satisfaction and revenue by implementing sensible noise policies that serve also to improve communication with passengers in order to counter this trend. Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the initial growth of Agonandra brasiliensis Miers ex Benth. & Hook. F. in response to different levels of shading and doses of controlled-release fertiliser (CRF). The experiment was conducted at Embrapa Roraima in Boa Vista, in a completely randomised experimental design and a 2 x 5 factorial scheme, of two luminosity levels (50 and 30%) and five doses of CRF (formulation 18-05-09, NPK) (0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3 g L-1 substrate), with five replications, each consisting of five plants. At 240 days after transplanting, the growth characteristics were evaluated, and the influence of the light levels and the CRF dose was recorded on these characteristics, either individually or interactively. It is suggested that plants of Agonandra brasiliensis be fertilised with a dose of 2 g L-1 CRF and grown in an environment with 50% of luminosity to maximize growth and efficiency in the production of high-quality seedlings.

This paper investigates the representation of sound phenomena in contemporary architectural photography. This aspect will be highlighted through a phenomenological analysis conducted on the photographs of the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg, designed by Swiss architecture firm Herzog & de Meuron. Focusing our analysis on the aesthetic features of photographs, the aim of stimulating the audience sensorially and emotionally becomes evident. We usually only focus on visual aspects, neglecting the synesthetic effects generated on the observers. Starting from an analysis of the portrayed persons in terms of expressions, gestures, postures and corporeal directions, the goal is to highlight how they change in relation to the building's sound space, and, as a consequence how they are able to influence the perceiver outside the frame. The interpretation of these clues is based on Herman Schmitz's felt body theory and Gernot Böhme's New Aesthetics.

The study and research described in this paper aims to reveal the unexplored aesthetical role of colors used for the ceramics in a mosque from the Marinid dynasty in Tlemcen, Algeria. The methodological approach consists firstly, of a formal analysis of the mosque’s artwork by describing its elements and composition and related principles.Secondly, the patterns and geometries are analyzed in-depth using artistic color concepts and laws of color contrast. The analysis demonstrates that the contrasts between bright, pure and dynamic colors provide luminosity, dynamism, rhythm, brightness and an optical mix. The color contrasts are also found to provide visual illusions of mass, volume or movement, as well as depth and relief that ultimately result in influencing the overall ambience of the mosque. The study thus enables the chromatic authenticity of this architectural heritage to be preserved by providing the necessary data for potential conservation, as well as providing a basis for innovative principles in expressing contemporary architecture.

At the beginning of the 21st century we find a call for philosophers to join a new alliance: with artists and architects rather than linguists or physicists. In order to see the ecosystem, we need to switch concepts, look away from "nature" and move towards ambiance and hyperobjects. Along with this rehabilitation of Aristotle (by speculative realism and, more specifically, object-oriented ontology) comes a call for a fresh start as post-humanistic symbionts. These are proposals for alternatives to the catastrophic end of the short-lived drama of the Anthropocene. All this aids the here introduction of near-future hyperobjectivity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We examined whether disrupted maternal communication, which is associated with disorganized attachment in typically developing children, is also associated with disorganized attachment in children with ASD. The attachments of 45 boys with ASD and maternal disruption were assessed in the Strange Situation Procedure. Analyses revealed a link between low cognitive functioning and resistant/ambivalent and disorganized attachment, and children's functioning was therefore controlled. Contrary to expectations, mothers of children with disorganized attachments did not show more disrupted communication than mothers of children with organized attachments. However, the 4-way attachment breakdown showed that the mothers of disorganized and ambivalent/resistant children had higher disruption scores than mothers of secure and avoidant children. The findings suggest that the expected associations between maternal disruption and attachment disorganization apply to children with ASD as well, but raise questions whether disrupted behavior is a unique antecedent of disorganized attachment or also of resistant/ambivalent attachment. CASINOS , *COMPULSIVE gambling , *CASINO management , *TASTE , *ETHNOLOGY - Abstract
In recent years, there has been an explosion of "experiential design" in casinos, driven in part by research suggesting that curating gambling sensescapes can lure patrons to spend more time – and money – inside the casino. Building on the promise of existing casino ethnographies, this paper argues that a sensory ethnographic approach to the study of gambling environments can offer valuable insight into the experiential design and mood management of the casino. We use sensory ethnography to explore the ambiance of the Montreal Casino, particularly during the casino's "Vegas Nights" promotion. How does the casino feel (and how does it touch back)? What rhythms flow through its neon labyrinth? What does "getting a real taste of Vegas," well ... taste like? Moreover, we position this ambiance at the center of the casino's "push-and-pull" approach to problem gambling – where this government-affiliated sensory extravaganza must toe a tenuous line between attraction and responsibilisation. In addition, we examine how the ambiance of the casino is co-produced by patrons and employees. Ultimately, we argue that the casino floor is unlike a sensory research laboratory – for here, sensations mix and mingle, and it takes a sensory ethnographer to quite literally "make sense" of the casino ambiance and its impact on visitor experience. This study on sound perception in Cairo uses a methodological procedure described in a previous issue of this journal [11(3)]. The procedure involves equipping inhabitants of Cairo, the Egyptian capital, with binaural microphones that record the surrounding urban sounds during one of their daily journeys (without the researcher). Participants later describe and comment on the sounds while listening to the recording. Analysis of this material allowed us first to establish an organized lexicon in categories. We identified a structured "natural language of sounds". The data obtained reveal covert categories that describe three key domains of urban life: the active city, the city in movement, and the relational city. A principal finding is that sound perception systematically relates sounds to their origin, i.e. both the source and its social situation. This socialization of sound led us to the notion of "sound constructs" as products of an immediate socialization of the perception of sound. Experiment clarifies how perception operates in Cairo, notably through territory differentiation using sonic saliences and soundmarks. Finally, we propose a "sonic ecology" of the city: how residents collectively experience the sound dimensions of their urban territory, navigate between very different territories, recognize them and respond to them. - Abstract
Ambience or ambient sound is normally defined as the background sounds that are used to create a sense of atmosphere. This paper is about players, and if they perceive emotional content in ambiences in games. The study involved the creation of two game levels, a dense forest and a meadow, with two different sound designs each, one conveying joy and the other melancholy. The aim of the experiment was to determine whether the participants could detect the intended emotional content. The results indicated that the peaceful emotion was easier to detect than the melancholy one. The majority of participants rated the levels similarly. While it may be challenging to create an intended emotional response in players, the study concludes that ambiences can indeed be perceived as having emotional content.

- Abstract
Cemetery as a part of development in civilization, is a rare place with serenity in urban fabric. The concept of death which associates the space of the cemetery with life and spiritual memories, also becomes a reminder for us of the nature of life. Commonly being located on the outskirts of the city, cemeteries in remote land have been the common planning outcomes in the consideration of land use, cultural taboos, sanitation concern, or even political decisions, they are not the places where people visit every day but are the places where memories and cultures restored. Nowadays, modern cemeteries still appear in the same enclosed layout that separates themselves from the urban context. Leaving the urban context outside the walls of cemeteries, also deprives the connection between people and the concept of death, making cemeteries obviated places. This work is about finding existing cemeteries on the boundary between the city and the natural landscape and establishing a new connection between urban and natural fabric by generating a new landscape approaching the passageway from city to cemetery, and the link between life, death, and nature., Award-winning

- Abstract
n Santiago de Chile, as in other parts of the world, the mass housing complexes of the modern movement encompassed large patches of land. In these, a different logic to the traditional compact block of the Latin American city was configured, with important interior spaces, circulations and commercial plates that were dissociated from the street and vehicular traffic. The research seeks to learn from the possibilities of these built forms and reveal the preferences of users for these public spaces -which prove to be highly versatile in their potential for adaptation-considering the potential lessons that could be deduced from this way of densifying the city.

- Abstract
Ambiance, Tourism and the City considers how tourism and urban development affect the lived ambiances of contemporary cities around the world. As most of the existing literature on sensory atmospheres says little about the intersection between tourism and atmospheric production, this book affirms the centrality of the notion of ambiance as a mode of inquiry into the making and remaking of urban places for tourist consumption. The book takes the reader into the sensory worlds of a traditional Italian marketplace, a jungle park in Kuala Lumpur, a slum in the Colombian city of Medellín, or the "sun and sand" tourism destinations in Southern Spain, among other case studies. It offers new insights into the impact of tourism on the urban environment from multidisciplinary perspectives and a wide range of geographical regions across Europe, North America, Asia, and South America. Through these contemporary case studies, the book further deepens our understanding of the ways in which "ambiances" and "atmospheres" pervade the physical regeneration and sensory transformation of contemporary tourist destinations. Conversely, this book offers insights on the effects of tourism on everyday urban experience. By bringing together a diverse group of scholars and case studies to present a global perspective on the atmospheric production of the tourist city, this book is to serve as a valuable reference tool for researchers and undergraduate and postgraduate students with an interest in urban ambiances, tourism, cultural geography, and urban planning.

- Abstract
Earth buildings are often reported to bring great benefits in terms of comfort and quality of life for their inhabitants. However, raw earth’s contribution is not purely technical. Investigating the sensory domain in the design of inhabited space is essential, as it takes into account the experiences and responses of people who will build and use the buildings. In order to treat the issues connected with both technical and sense-related factors, this study will take an approach based on architectural ambiances. This paper will question the specificities of atmospheres designed and built with raw earth to get answers to see if the presence of raw earth could change the ambiance perception of a place. If a change can happen, how is it highlighted? Which factors are involved? How important are perceptual factors with respect to physical values? Could people's perception be affected by getting involved and participating in the construction process? To get answers to these questions, two experiments were conducted. The first one took place in Barcelona, where the composition of a wall inside a university’s office was modified. More specifically, an earth plaster was applied to one of the four walls of the office. The second experiment was carried out in Grenoble, where one of the walls of a break-room was covered with earth bricks. The results of both experiments showed that the sensorial attributes of raw earth seem to reinforce the creation of more pleasant and soothing atmospheres by raw-earth spaces., TED2021-129705B-C31, Circular economy in the earth building and database development of suitable soils. In this article I provide an alternative ethnographic “description” of daily life of long-haul drivers. It is based on the assumption of acoustemology and field recording method. Data was gathered during research within truck drivers working for Western European freight companies and who inhabit cabs of their tractors units. Research corresponds with a current trend of anthropology of sound that consider audio-representations as a counterfactual way of production of anthropological knowledge. On the methodological level the main goal of my study was to transgress academic visuality. To accomplish this purpose I have decided to experience an ethnographic fieldwork through sound.
