This article explores the nature, strengths and limitations of Roman, Christian, Kantian and utilitarian ethics and their legacy in some modern theories of educative leadership that are educative in intent and outcome. It is shown that Roman, Christian, Kantian, and utilitarian ethics have profoundly shaped transformational, instructional, distributed, and ethical leadership theories. Roman ethics emphasize civic duty, virtue, and community service, influencing leaders to inspire collective goals and improve educational outcomes. Christian ethics highlight love, compassion, and moral integrity, guiding leaders to act as ethical exemplars and nurture followers. Kantian ethics focus on duty, universal principles, and respect for individuals, promoting ethical consistency and dignity in leadership practices. Utilitarian ethics prioritize maximizing happiness and well-being, driving leaders to achieve positive changes and balance individual needs with the greater good. It concludes that these ethical foundations (a) continue to inform contemporary educative leadership practices and (b) underpin recent scholarship that has shown how Roman, Christian, Kantian, and utilitarian ethics can shape moral school leadership and ethical decision-making, offering school leaders a nuanced approach to promote learning and social justice, fairness, and community well-being.

This study investigates the integration of global citizenship education (GCED) within the Christian worldview, focusing on youth education in the post-pandemic era. It underscores the necessity of GCED in addressing pandemic-exacerbated challenges and aligns its objectives with Christian values through scriptural exploration. Core competencies like empathy, ethical reasoning, and global awareness are examined from a Christian perspective, alongside practical applications in educational settings the post-pandemic. The study concludes with reflections on the potential impact and challenges of incorporating Christian perspectives into GCED, advocating for inclusive and diverse educational approaches in a post-pandemic world.

Trauma-informed frameworks are needed in metropolitan and urban university settings because many who enter higher education have experienced trauma or will experience trauma while at the university. This paper addresses the neurobiological and psychological underpinnings of trauma and addresses how these experiences can pose academic challenges, leading to misinterpretations of students' behaviors by faculty. This paper provides faculty with the knowledge to recognize, empathize, and respond effectively to students with trauma experiences and all students. The authors share four practical strategies for implementation (address feeling overwhelmed, address planning for assignments, provide ways to remember content and incorporate a focus on learning content) in the metropolitan and urban university classroom to create an inclusive educational environment that facilitates learning and growth for students who have experienced trauma and all students.

The primary purpose of education is preparation for life. But what kind of life, and life for whom? Within the social studies, emphasis has long been placed on preparation for civic life in diverse and democratic societies within an interconnected world. This remains essential. There is an ongoing need for people who are willing and able to address the challenges of society, including structural problems such as racism, classism, and patriarchy. However, in addition to continuing threats to the quality of "human" life, growing concerns have also arisen regarding the quality, indeed the survival, of "all" life on the planet. One of the most urgent challenges of today is the decline of the environment upon which all life depends. This paper examines the implications of the environmental crisis for the social studies. First, I explore the deep interconnectivity that exists between humans and the nonhuman world and, by extension, between our social and environmental challenges. Next, I consider the implications of these connections for a socioenvironmental approach to social studies education. In addition to practical curricular and instructional factors, I argue that we must promote the development of a "critical ecological perspective" through which to interpret the fundamental relationships between humans and the world.

As a social-interactional positive behavior, the flow of compassion (i.e., selfcompassion, compassion for others, and compassion from others), which refers to sensitivity to suffering in self and others with a commitment to try to alleviate and prevent it, has yet to be investigated in a highly social-interactional context such as foreign language learning classrooms. Thus, the present study adopted an ecological perspective within Bronfenbrenner's (1979, 1993) analytic nested ecosystems model to explore how the flow of compassion is rooted in such a context. Sixteen Iranian English as a foreign language learners took part in the current study, and data were collected through semistructured interviews. Employing the framework of the nested ecosystems model, we identified both influential individual and environmental factors underlying the flow of compassion among the participants. The flow of compassion proved to be influenced differently at different ecosystemic levels by individual and environmental factors. At the individual level, negative and positive emotions, fears, non-judgmental attitudes, intimacy, well-being, improvement, motivation, and action were found as influential factors in emerging the flow of compassion. At the contextual level, the identified influential factors included past experiences outside of the classroom, extracurricular activities, institution policy and criteria, cultural and social values, as well as the use of technology and the internet. Limitations and implications of the present study are also discussed.

Research on young English language learners has been gaining popularity in recent years, but to this day remains underdeveloped. The present study aimed to add to this body of research by exploring the effects of visual arts activities implemented via comprehension and compared to more commonly used flashcard activities implemented via comprehension-based instruction on young English language learners' vocabulary acquisition and retention. The study specifically focused on very young learners who do not have access to the English language outside of the classroom. This study employed a withinsubjects counterbalanced design with young English language learners (N = 47) with a mean age of three years and eight months. The results provided evidence that both instruction types are highly effective in the productive and receptive learning of vocabulary among young English language learners. Furthermore, the positive effects of visual arts activities implemented via comprehension-based instruction on vocabulary retention were found to be significantly higher than those of the production-based instruction.

The 2023 Tribal Leaders qualitative study is an emergent perspective from twelve Tribal leaders on education, Tribal sovereignty, leadership, and change presented as a poster session at the 2023 NRMERA conference in Omaha, Nebraska. This conceptual paper presents a review of literature acknowledging a lack of research inclusive of the voice of Tribal leaders as well as research, particularly in the areas of Tribal-specific/Native-centered leadership models and change frameworks. The research findings are presented across the four focus areas and of note: In education, Tribal leaders indicated the need for Tribal voices to be heard, accurate American History to be taught, adequate funding to be provided, and more culturally relevant instruction provided inclusive of language and cultural teaching were among the more significant findings. In the area of Tribal sovereignty, Tribal leaders indicated that Tribal sovereignty was something they wanted. They were not convinced that Tribal sovereignty was something in reality that could be achieved and, once achieved, could be held onto. In terms of leadership, Tribal leaders indicated a preference for Servant Leadership and did not specify any specific Tribal leadership definitions, models, or frameworks. With regard to change, Tribal leaders discussed change with no specific Tribal leadership models or frameworks. The findings are discussed and interpreted through a TribalCrit lens (Brayboy, 2022), with a conclusion and next steps presented.

The goal of the study is to analyse the relation between students' digital learning and transversal skills, as well as between students' digital learning and virtues. In the correlative study, 73 teachers of Class 12 of general education institutions participated, filling out a questionnaire in the Google Docs environment. As a result of the theoretical analysis, the criteria for digital learning have been identified - access to digital technologies, cooperation, teachers' digital competence and availability of activities in compliance with cognitive engagement levels. The findings of the correlation analysis show that the availability of activities in compliance with cognitive engagement levels is the most important in the development of transversal skills, while in the inculcation of virtues - cooperation. The access to digital technologies has a statistically significant correlation with both transversal skills and virtues. The teachers' digital competence promotes digital literacy and such virtues as responsibility and wisdom. The recommendations developed as part of the study include compilation and promotion of the positive experiences of digital learning at the state and local government level; continuous monitoring and feedback analysis of purposeful digital learning and educational quality at school and classroom level; the application of digital learning resources based on the offer of activities in compliance with the students' cognitive engagement levels at the personal level.

In the current study, we focused on measuring the development of important professional attitudes, such as "compassion satisfaction" and "burnout." Students from four different colleges worked in teams to conceptualize innovative engineering products. During the ideation phase of their project, participants completed a Professional Quality of Life survey to assess metrics related to "compassion satisfaction" and "burnout." On average, the combined "compassion satisfaction" score was high for both medical students (42/50) and non-medical students (43/50). In terms of "burnout," 77% of medical students and 81% of non-medical students reported low "burnout"; the average "burnout" score for medical students was 19/50, and for non-medical students 17/50. Only one statement produced a statistically significant difference between groups. For the statement, "I am a caring person," only 31% of medical students self-described as being a very caring person 'very often' as opposed to 62% of non-medical students. Through this innovative curriculum project, faculty were able to measure the level of student "compassion satisfaction," and "burnout" for the students involved. Surrounded by the rationality of science, students learned to communicate and contribute to projects that supported a positive sense of contribution and effort, and a low perception of "burnout."

Research in self-compassion has rapidly increased. Providing a comprehension of the scientific knowledge landscape will be helpful for researchers to identify the gaps and develop future research ideas in this field without subjectivity. Thus, overarching structures in self-compassion Scopus-indexed research were sought to be analysed here. Bibliometric techniques were used to extract documents indexed in Scopus under the domain of self-compassion (N = 1,764 articles) using bibliophily, a web interface of the Bibliometrix 3.0 and VOSviewer to conduct analysis and visualisation. The number of published articles shows an upward trend; the United States occupies the leading position in publication volumes and citations. Undoubtedly, K. D. Neff and her sustained cited model were reported as a prolific author and influential article in self-compassion literature. The top affiliation was the University of Texas at Austin, which was the leading university in both production and citation. Mindfulness was a key journal that was considered in publication volume and received citations; however, authors tended to publish from diverse selected sources. The top 50 most frequently used terms were related to individual differences and psychological status. Finally, the thematic mapping provided a comprehensive illustration showing significant themes and knowledge gaps in self-compassion research, which categorised individual differences as basic, measurement validation as niche and PTSD as emerging themes. The current findings presented scientific mappings and extensive tables containing information that usefully proposes future directions and the critical broader scope of research in self-compassion.

Northeastern University's EdD faculty faced unique challenges during the pandemic and racial reckoning following George Floyd's murder. During this period, however, we found opportunities to adapt and improve our program. We prioritized compassion and connection. We made significant strides in curriculum development through design and implementation of three new concentrations. We focused all program elements on how social justice works in a variety of educational settings. We altered our approach to data collection and doctoral supervision. In so doing, we were able to maintain consistency for our students and develop a closer bond with our faculty colleagues.

As the interest in the shift from teacher-centred paradigm to student-centred learning pedagogies has increasingly grown in popularity nowadays, it should come as no surprise that scholars and academicians have given their attention to the concept of self-engagement in the learning process. In an attempt to explore the role of personality in self-engagement, this paper aims to assess the relationship pattern between individuals' personality traits and their learning responsibility. A total of 358 students attending a university were recruited for the study. The Ten-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI) and The Learning Responsibility Scale were administered. The findings revealed that learning responsibility correlates positively with emotional stability, conscientiousness, and agreeableness. However, the associations between extraversion and openness with learning responsibility are negative and not significant. The findings have also demonstrated that although agreeableness does not display a significant predictive power, both emotional stability and conscientiousness have a significant influence on learning responsibility.

The objective of this research is to examine the reading texts in the coursebooks for teaching Turkish as a foreign language in terms of their reflection of core values. Employing a qualitative research model, data were collected through document analysis method. The data set of this study comprises 124 reading texts in the B1 and B2 level of coursebooks published by Yedi Iklim, Gazi, and Yeni Istanbul publishing companies. These texts were scrutinized according to ten core values in Education (justice, friendship, honesty, self-control, patience, respect, love, responsibility, patriotism, altruism) determined by the Board of Education of the Ministry of Education, Turkey in the year of 2017, and the obtained data were analyzed using content analysis technique. The results of the study have revealed that Yedi Iklim B1 Textbook contains 90 core values, whereas B2 Textbook contains 156 core values. Likewise, Gazi B1 Textbook comprises 82 and B2 Textbook has 152 core values. It has also been determined that Yeni Istanbul B1 Textbook is composed of 156 core values and B2 Textbook contains 87 core values. In total, it has been found out that, 723 core values are comprised across all texts in the dataset. Among these values in the texts, altruism (f=91), honesty (f=88), and self-control (f=78) are the most frequently addressed core values while justice (f=64), patience (f=63), and love (f=62) are the least addressed ones.

This study explores the influence mechanism of perceived servant leadership on innovative behavior among college students in Hebei Province, China, and the chain-mediating role of innovative atmosphere and innovative self-efficacy. This study adopts the questionnaire survey method and the convenience sampling method, and 478 college students are collected. The results show that the perception of servant leadership by college students in Hebei Province in China significantly positively affects innovative behavior; The innovative atmosphere and innovative self-efficacy mediate between college students' perceived servant leadership and innovative behavior.

Through its different components, such as compassion and prosocial behaviour, kindness contributes to healthy social relationships. Additionally, it is frequently reported in the literature that individuals who are securely attached are more likely to perceive their friends and families as having their backs. Studies examining the relationship between secure attachment, kindness, and perceived social support variables in high school students may contribute to improving their well-being levels and preventing psychopathology from developing. This study examines the relationship between perceived social support, secure attachment to parents and peers, and character strength of kindness among high school students. The study involved 676 high school students (499 females and 177 males). The correlation analysis showed that high school students' perceived levels of social support from their families, friends, and teachers, their attachment to parents and peers, and their kindness strength had a significant and positive relationship with each other. In the path analysis, it was found that students' secure attachment to parents and peers predicted perceived social support from friends, family, and teachers, either directly or indirectly. The bootstrapping process also revealed that indirect predictive relationships were significant. Finally, the study offered suggestions for future studies.

This study explored relationships between hope, self-efficacy, and professional identity among a group of undergraduate engineering students at a western institution of higher education in the United States (US) over the span of an academic semester. We conducted a mixed-methods study with undergraduate engineering students to measure aspects of hope, and self-efficacy. Furthermore, we investigated how they perceived their own professional identity in terms of what it means to be an engineer and engage in the profession. Participants reported high levels of hope at mid- and end-of-semester. Those pursuing degrees requiring professional licensure reported higher levels of willpower compared to students pursuing non-licensure degrees. Students experienced increased self-efficacy towards engineering skills and processes over time. Participants' perceptions of engineering professional identity remained consistent over the semester. Their sense of engineering work and goal orientation fell primarily into one of three archetypes: Pragmatic, Creative, and Altruistic.

This research delves into analyzing and comprehending humanistic attitudes within the management framework of the Youth Red Cross (PMR) organization at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Negeri Palopo. Employing a qualitative approach, data is gathered through interviews, observations, and subsequent analysis. The study encompasses various stakeholders: the Headmaster of MTsN Palopo serves as an informant to provide an overview of the school, while administrators relay information regarding the school's general profile. Facilitators from the Indonesian Red Cross (Palang Merah Indonesia) and participating teachers offer insights into activity implementation. Additionally, interviews with active student participants, including core committee members and department heads, capture their perspectives on activity execution. Findings reveal the pivotal role of humanism in PMR organization management. Members demonstrate a profound concern for fellow students' welfare, evidenced by humanitarian activities like social action and first aid training. Management ethos within the PMR organization also champions humanistic principles. Student leaders focus on service-oriented leadership and meticulous time management from planning to empowering PMR members to actively engage in altruistic endeavors. Humanistic values underpin the ethos of PMR organization management, fostering an environment conducive to leadership cultivation, first aid proficiency, and altruism. Central to this ethos is the ethos of caring for fellow members and students, laying a robust foundation for PMR activities and management steeped in human values. This environment not only supports leadership development but also emphasizes first aid training and mutual assistance, all centered on fostering humanistic values.

The COVID-19 pandemic brought abrupt changes to teaching that caused increased stress amid an already difficult time. Whether teaching remote, hybrid, or in-person, university faculty were expected to continue teaching throughout the pandemic, despite personal challenges at home. In addition, there were expectations that faculty show greater levels of compassion towards their students. Multiple articles brought attention to these struggles and questioned whether university faculty might be experiencing compassion fatigue--a state of emotional exhaustion brought on by secondary traumatic stress and characterized by a reduced capacity for empathy. Using data from a larger, longitudinal qualitative study of faculty members' experiences during the pandemic, the present study aims to understand faculty experiences of emotional labor and compassion fatigue during this time. Unsurprisingly, most participants reported an increase in emotional labor during the early pandemic; however, roughly one in four described their emotional labor loads as unchanged or even decreased. In those cases, participants often described active disengagement practices in the workplace, or methods of "guarding one's time." Overall, compassion fatigue was less evident than anticipated, but there were identifiable signs of burnout among participants. This finding alone suggests a need for additional research to better conceptualize and operationalize the two terms.

Gifted education should focus on gifting rather than on being gifted. That is, it should focus on what one offers from one's gifts, not just on what gifts a person has, one way or another, accumulated. Gifted individuals should consider choosing careers that are a good fit to them, that enable them to give back, and that give them a sense of meaning in their life. They should be ready to move on if their career choice proves to be mistaken, or no longer to be a fit. They should avoid temptations brought on by outside pressures to choose careers that may be much less than fulfilling. In the end, what matters most is one's passion and motivation for a career rather than grades, test scores, or external pressures.

Background: A variety of residential and experiential therapeutic programs exist for youth who experience emotional, behavioral, or substance abuse problems that are not adequately responsive to traditional treatment options. While evaluations of programs are available in the literature, investigation of the experiences of professionals who undergird these programs and oversee reentry of youth back into their communities is lacking. Purpose: The research reported here aimed to explicate the experiences of recreational therapists. Methodology/Approach: Qualitative design was used to collect and analyze data. Semistructured interviews were employed, and data were analyzed by content analysis. Findings/Conclusions: Findings indicated recreational therapists were optimistic, intrinsically motivated to spend time outdoors, became personally invested in their work and experienced personal growth from their work. They required additional systems of support and guidance to effectively counter compassion fatigue and associated burnout. Measures for organizations to effectively counter compassion fatigue through enhancement of peer support systems and self-care guidance are needed. Implications: The results provided insight into the characteristics, needs, and experiences of recreational therapists who work with high-promise youth. Further, the work provided a proposed change to current models of compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue subscale interactions in this population.

Mindfulness strategies can have a large impact on emotional regulation, emotional intelligence, and interpersonal relationships. Parents of children on the autism spectrum may experience greater stress, depression, and strained interpersonal relationships than those with typically developing children or those with children experiencing other developmental delays. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and initial effects of a virtual Mindful Self-Compassion workshop for parents of children on the autism spectrum and the impact on stress, self-compassion, parenting self-efficacy, and mindfulness. This pilot study used a mixed-method approach to test this hypothesis. Participants completed surveys before and after the brief workshop and participated in a 1-hr focus group within 1 week of completing the surveys. The findings indicate that a short, 3-day virtual workshop may be effective toward improving parents' mindfulness and self-compassion. Parents reported feeling more mindful in their day-to-day life, more self-compassionate during difficult times, and more patient with themselves and other people in their family. A brief, virtual workshop may be effective for short-term improvements in outcomes for parents of children on the autism spectrum.

Recognition that schools should be responsive to children who are impacted by adversity and trauma is burgeoning internationally. However, consensus regarding the necessary components of a trauma-informed school is lacking. This research developed expert-informed and internationally relevant best-practice trauma-informed principles for schools. A four-phase methodology included (i) identification of school-relevant trauma-informed practice programs, (ii) inductive thematic analysis of the main concepts underlying programs, (iii) phrasing of draft Principles and (iv) Principle revision and finalisation via a two-round Delphi survey with international experts. Excellent agreement by experts on the importance of all Principles was achieved (round 1 [greater than or equal to] 86.4%, 2 [greater than or equal to] 92.3%). The final 'International Trauma-Informed Practice Principles for Schools' (ITIPPS) include four Overarching (A-D) and 10 Practice Principles (1-10). Summarised, these include that the school: (A) is student focussed; (B) models compassion and generosity; (C) is understanding and responsive; (D) incorporates recognition of their First Nations peoples in the school's ethos: (1) prioritises safety and wellbeing; (2) models positive relationships; (3) provides a positive culture and connects; (4) consults and collaborates; (5) supports vulnerable students; (6) teaches social and emotional learning; (7) provides trauma-informed practice training; (8) is predictable yet flexible; (9) identifies and nurtures strengths and (10) reflects, changes and grows. The ITIPPS provide clear guidance for education sectors, schools and other settings about appropriate learning environments for children and young people impacted by trauma. Research is now underway in Western Australian schools to pilot test the feasibility and impact of using the ITIPPS within a framework (thoughtfulschools.org.au) to establish trauma-informed schools.

The COVID-19 pandemic heightened the tensions between rural community needs and politicized state-level school closure mandates. District leaders faced competing demands of meeting the basic needs of vulnerable families, supporting the mental health of students and teachers, protecting the health of all community members, and creating new opportunities for learning. This study examines how rural district leaders responded to these challenges through the lens of caring. This lens highlights how district leaders responded to their contexts, as well as their perceptions of student, family, and staff needs in ethically grounded and politically savvy ways. We draw on semi-structured interviews with 12 rural district leaders in eight districts. District leaders in this study described caring as something that is intentionally enacted and identified several aspects that contributed to a caring district: a welcoming culture, taking an interest in individuals, prioritizing wellbeing, developing relationships, extending empathy and grace for people, and helping individuals see themselves as part of a larger community. Leaders made efforts to set the tone for and model care, build relationships with students, teachers, parents, and community members, and enact servant leadership to support others. We conclude by examining the ways that applying an ethic of care illustrates how leaders identify needs and the strategies they use to respond to those needs in a responsive, place-attuned way.

Being able to defend victims of school bullying is central in any intervention; thus, it seems paramount to investigate which factors may contribute to defending behavior. The present report aims to investigate whether empathic self-efficacy is associated with helping behavior and whether interpersonal factors (i.e., social preference and student-teacher relationship) may interact with it. The sample comprised 249 middle-school students (47.80% boys) aged 11-14 years, who received peer nominations on defending behavior and social preference. Self-reports were used to assess empathic self-efficacy and the relationship with the teachers. Results highlight a positive association between empathic self-efficacy and defending behavior when social preference and a positive relationship with teachers were average or high but not when they were low. Results are discussed in light of the importance of considering individual and interpersonal factors to understand defending in bullying situations and to develop intervention programs.

The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which life purpose explained the variance in college students' levels of resilience and persistence amidst COVID-19 pandemic. This study utilized a cross-sectional design and focused upon the three dimensions of life purpose: awareness of purpose, awakening to purpose, altruistic purpose. Structural equation modeling showed that both resilience and persistence were predicted positively by awakening to purpose when a traditional three-correlated factors model was used to specify the measure of life purpose. When a bifactor model was used, the general factor of purpose emerged as a positive predictor of both resilience and persistence. Additionally, awakening to purpose emerged as a positive predictor of resilience above and beyond the general factor of purpose. Practical implications of this study lie in supporting students to actively explore and fulfill their life's purpose since doing so might strengthen their resilience and intent to persevere.

Few studies on the development of forgiveness involved young children and adolescents, and very few involved samples from non-western countries. This study focused on the development of willingness to forgive a particular transgression in participants aged 4 to 12 years and from two different cultures: a South African culture (Mozambique) and a Western European culture (France). Overall, 153 pupils from Mozambique and 107 pupils from France were presented with eight vignettes depicting a situation where a young child, intentionally or accidentally, dropped a small radio that they borrowed from another young child. These vignettes were composed by applying an orthogonal Intent × Consequences × Apologies, 2 × 2 × 2, design. Participants expressed what their willingness to forgive would be in each case on a continuous response scale. Through cluster analysis, four main positions were identified. They were labeled: "Almost never forgive" (11% of participants), "Depends mainly on consequences" (22%), "Depends mainly on intent and apologies" (57%), and "Almost always forgive" (2%). The first two positions were typical of 4-7-year olds, and the third one was typical of 8-12-year olds. No significant differences in cluster composition were found between the Mozambican and French participants. Up to the age of four, most children probably do not have access to the notion of forgiveness. From the age of four to seven, this notion begins to appear, in particular through a gradual taking into account of circumstantial factors other than the severity of consequences of a transgression. This development is quite rapid - probably during the 7-year period, from 0 to 7 years. From the age of eight onwards, a forgiveness schema similar to that observed in adults is operational. This developmental trajectory is probably very general. It seems to depend little on the type of culture in which it develops.

Rising perfectionism levels within post-secondary students could be one reason for students' challenges with adaptation to post-secondary. Recent research has suggested mindfulness-based interventions may be a promising avenue for mitigating high perfectionism, in addition to improving emotional and social well-being. The objective of this study was to assess the effects of 8 weeks of a mindfulness course on post-secondary students (compared to a non-meditating control group). Variables of interest were mindfulness, multidimensional perfectionism (self-oriented, other-oriented, and socially prescribed types), stress, anxiety, self-compassion, and social connectedness. Students self-enrolled into a mindfulness class offered at a college in Alberta, Canada (n = 15). The experimental sample, aged 18-54 (M = 25.27, SD = 11.47), were 96.7% female. A control group was recruited from first- and second-year psychology classes (n = 30), with ages ranging from 17 to 38 (M = 21.70, SD = 5.36) and 70% identifying as female. Students completed in-person surveys near the beginning of the term and again after 8 weeks. ANOVAs and linear regression analyses were conducted. In line with previous studies, results indicated that college students practicing mindfulness evidenced lower perfectionism (self-oriented and other-oriented types), stress, and anxiety, along with higher mindfulness and self-compassion. Additionally, interpersonal benefits were revealed as the mindfulness group increased in social connectedness. Perplexing results suggest two routes to social connection, as the control group also showed an increase in social connection, potentially motivated by higher stress and self-criticism. Findings from the current study are impressive (given the small sample size and the high-stress time of the term during which post-test measures were taken) and suggest that integrating mindfulness practices into the curriculum can enhance emotional and social well-being for postsecondary students.

At the 2020 American String Teachers Association (ASTA) Conference held in Orlando Florida, an attendee of the Wellness Committee Listening Session recommended that a study be conducted to determine the prevalence and awareness of mental health concerns among students and teachers within the organization. Members agreed that there is more needed to be understood so that ASTA could provide professional development webinars, resources, as well as local, state, and national conference sessions. In response to this request and the clear need for more information, a survey was developed and deployed to the ASTA membership in the fall of 2020. Follow-up interviews with members who volunteered in response to an invitation on the survey were conducted in the spring and early summer of 2021. Teachers reported a high prevalence of student mental health issues prior to and during the pandemic and reported concerning levels of work overload, compassion fatigue/burnout, and mental health issues. Generational differences in mental health perceptions were noted, as were opportunities to provide targeted professional development and community-level services.

Over the past decade, there has been a significant increase in research studies that introduce contemplative practices -- such as mindfulness, compassion, and lovingkindness -- into the educational setting. While these programs have shown promising results for both students and teachers, there remains a gap in understanding how to integrate contemplative practices into the curriculum of teacher training education for sustainability. This paper aims to present a conceptual framework of Contemplative Practices (CP) that focuses on lovingkindness-compassion, which has the potential to revolutionize teaching practices towards sustainability. By advocating for the urgent integration of CP within the curriculum of teacher training education for sustainability, this paper asserts that nurturing the lovingkindness-compassion competency can pave the way for a sustainable curriculum and a curriculum for sustainability.

While AI-powered digital platforms are transforming the economy through forms of algorithmic governance that prioritize the automation of work and decision-making, it is critical to ensure that human education remains relevant in the age of machine learning. Unrestricted reliance on artificial intelligence could undermine the entire system of education by allowing machines to replace humans in a multitude of professions, including those that require ethical judgments. This could result in a rapid decline of human agency and create a new class of unemployed workers, a proliferation of unskilled digital labor, and an obsoleteness of education. To avoid this outcome, it is crucial to ensure the rational use of AI and to enable an ethical and sustainable coexistence of humans and advanced technologies, while renewing the raison d'être for human-centered education. This paper proposes to redefine the division of labor between humans and machines and to consider the development of new professions dedicated solely to humans across all economic sectors.

Today, due to the increasing interest in hybrid education environments and technology integration into the course, mobile devices have started to be used in face-to-face classroom lessons. In addition to the many advantages of using mobile devices in the classroom, it also leads to some undesirable situations. One is related to developing students' habits of playing digital games during the lesson. This research aimed to determine the relationship between students' digital game addiction and selfishness, one of the individual differences, on their academic motivation and classroom engagement. Participants were 860 high school students in grades 9 to 12. The research used a correlational design. The result of a path analysis revealed that selfishness was related to digital game addiction; as the level of selfishness of the students' increased, the probability of digital game addiction also increased. Also, digital game addiction was associated with academic motivation and was not related to classroom engagement, such that, as academic motivation levels of the students increased, the classroom engagement levels also increased. Recommendations for what can be done to increase the students' academic motivation and classroom engagement are discussed.

Early childhood teaching is complex, caring, relational work. In enacting an ethic of care, early childhood teachers often focus on extending care to others, and overlook including themselves in a circle of care. This can negatively impact on teacher well-being and ultimately lead to teacher burnout. This paper draws on a project that explored twelve teachers' experiences of the practice of mindful self-compassion using a methodology of mindful inquiry, a qualitative approach that includes elements of mindfulness, care, and hermeneutic phenomenology. Findings of the study identified that the practice of mindful self-compassion supported teachers to enact an ethic of care, which includes extending care, receiving care, and engaging in self-care. Being mindfully self-compassionate supported the teachers to engage in intentional caring practices that fostered relationships and supported the well-being of children and their colleagues, and empowered the teachers to advocate for themselves, their colleagues, and children. The paper argues that mindful self-compassion practice supports and sustains early childhood teachers in their caring role. When carers are included in a circle of care, then the reciprocal and inclusive nature of an ethic of care can be more fully realised. Implications are discussed for initial teacher education, teaching practice, early childhood leaders and policy makers.

The early years of physiology education in medical curricula provide unique challenges. As well as inculcating concepts that are seen as difficult, modern curricula require that students learn in context in case-based learning courses. Additionally, regulating bodies stress that the soft skills of compassion, communication, and empathy are embedded throughout curricula. This has driven work in our organization involving drama and final-year medicine students during which they collaborate in realistic simulations of doctor/patient interactions. We adapted this transdisciplinary approach to second-year physiology tutorials. This emphasized the holistic importance of physiology to patient care, while also embedding "human factors" skills from the very earliest stages of the curriculum. After preparing by attending acting classes based on aspects of Konstantin Stanislavski's "System," the authors supervised tutorials in which drama students participated in a "physiology of hypofertility" session for second-year medical students, playing a 34-year-old woman with premature menopause (or their partner). Opinion (from all students) was evaluated by Likert questionnaires (which included open questions). A focus group of drama students was also interviewed, and the conversation was recorded for thematic analysis. Positive Likert scores were recorded for the authenticity of the tutorials, skills development, fostering empathy, and motivating students to improve. All participants evaluated the tutorial as highly enjoyable. These scores are reflected in positive open commentary on the questionnaires and in the focus group interviews. The results suggest that even basic science tutorials give opportunities for interdisciplinary study and enhancement of behavioral skills while gaining enthusiastic student acceptance.

The effects of mental health challenges in the United States are growing and affect both Grades P-12 special education teachers and faculty at institutions of higher education (IHE). Educators struggle with compassion fatigue and associated burnout. With educators leaving the field for a plethora of reasons, it is vital to examine factors that support those who remain in education. Thus, we analyzed factors that support the retention of educators at both levels of instruction. In a qualitative analysis of data from survey respondents (N = 200), we examined the resiliency and endurance of practicing rural P-12 special educators and faculty at IHEs. Results from inductive content analysis indicate that factors leading to persistence in education begin with educators finding meaning in their teaching. Educators who demonstrate career endurance have a strong sense of self-efficacy in their teaching abilities, receive emotional benefits from their students, and have quality opportunities to mentor and collaborate with others. By contrast, some educators indicate burnout is a key factor for leaving the field, and reported reasons include low pay, paperwork, poor work/life balance, lack of respect, and the mental health of themselves and their students. Based on these findings, we offer recommendations for research and practice.

Schools are important in nurturing social skills and behaviours. Research consistently demonstrates that movement into/out of school (transience/mobility) disrupts positive social skill development, especially for students who frequently move. The impact of attending a highly transient school on "non-mobile" students is not as well-known. The current study explored the impact of values and life skill-based programme, Kiwi Can, on social development and the classroom climate for non-mobile children. Researchers administered surveys to students attending 15 intervention (i.e. Kiwi Can programme; n = 763) and 9 control (n = 456) schools in Aotearoa New Zealand. We examined the impact of programme participation by school transience level (high, middle, low) and length of school participation (new, experienced). The results indicate that students attending highly transient schools struggled to build social relationships, feel connected, demonstrate care and compassion to others, and behave in prosocial ways. They also felt less safe at their schools. Students participating in Kiwi Can for more than two years (experienced schools) showed fewer negative effects of transience on social development than less experienced schools. This research highlights the plight of students who are 'left behind.'

Since there are many advantages of servant leadership, such as altruistic calling, emotional healing, wisdom, persuasive mapping, and organizational stewardship, employers and human resources are particularly concerned about these soft skills when recruiting graduates. This study explores the impact of undergraduates' servant leadership on their self-perception of employability. We utilized previously validated scale questionnaires (the Servant Leadership Scale and the Undergraduates Perceived Employability Scale) to predict the perceived employability of undergraduates. We used multiple linear regression analysis to examine the five subscales of undergraduate servant leadership. Our extensive research has uncovered substantial evidence supporting all five hypotheses presented in the paper. Five variables, derived from the five dimensions of servant leadership, were used to measure undergraduates' perceived employability as the dependent variable. Our findings confirm that the altruistic calling, emotional healing, wisdom, persuasive mapping, and organizational stewardship dimensions of servant leadership have positive correlations with undergraduates' perceived employability. Our findings suggest that undergraduates may be more employable if they exhibit the characteristics of servant leadership. Undergraduates should therefore be encouraged to enhance their soft skills in relation to servant leadership, and universities should consider offering courses on the topic. Employers and HR professionals may want to provide training to new employees on servant leadership to align better with the company culture. This study is the first to predict how undergraduate students' servant leadership qualities affect their perceived employability. The findings indicate that undergraduates who exhibit servant leadership traits are more likely to have a positive perception of their employability.

Evaluating other people's moral character is a crucial social cognitive task. However, the cognitive processes by which people seek out, prioritize, and integrate multiple pieces of character-relevant information have not been studied empirically. The first aim of this research was to examine which character traits are considered most important when forming an impression of a person's overall moral character. The second aim was to understand how differing levels of trait expression affect overall character judgments. Four preregistered studies and one supplemental study (total N = 720), using five different measures of importance and sampling undergraduates, online workers, and community members, found that our participants placed the most importance on the traits "honest, helpful, compassionate, loyal," and "responsible." Also, when integrating the information that they have learned, our participants seemed to engage in a simple averaging process in which all available, relevant information is combined in a linear fashion to form an overall evaluation of moral character. This research provides new insights into the cognitive processes by which evaluations of moral character are formed.

Prior research suggests mindfulness-based interventions effectively reduce stress in trainee psychologists, enhance wellbeing and cultivate clinical skills and competencies. This study explored how trainee school psychologists perceived the effects of a mindfulness-based intervention on their development as psychologists. Forty trainee school psychologists participated in a 6-week online mindfulness-based intervention. They completed weekly written reflective journals throughout the programme which were later analysed using thematic analysis. Four core themes were identified: (1) changes in awareness and attention; (2) enhanced wellbeing; (3) commitment to ongoing personal practice and (4) cultivation and enhancement of professional development. Participants (n = 24) who completed the mindfulness workshop during the COVID-19 pandemic indicated that mindfulness practice was particularly useful for managing uncertainty and other related stressors. It was concluded that practicing mindfulness supported trainee school psychologists' personal and professional development, particularly related to compassion, resilience and therapeutic presence.

The purpose of this study was to identify the incidence of incivility experienced by a purposive sample of novice occupational therapists who graduated from a master's level program that focused on developing servant leaders as part of its mission. Data from this group was then compared to outcomes from a previous national survey of novice occupational therapists. Incivility in both studies was measured using the Negative Acts Questionnaire-Revised (NAQ-R). An independent samples t-test showed that NAQ-R total scores and person-related incivility subscores were significantly (p<0.05) lower for the novice occupational therapists with servant leadership training than the nationwide cohort. While the comparison between groups was exploratory in nature, it demonstrates the need for additional studies to examine relationships between civility and use of positive leadership models in academia, fieldwork settings, and in the workplace as a method for promoting civility.

Most research exploring school-based forgiveness education programs focuses on student outcomes. However, some scholars have begun studying teachers' views of forgiveness. We build on this work by exploring teachers' views of forgiveness education in Greece and Saudi Arabia. A total of 134 teachers (76 Greek and 58 Saudi) completed a survey asking about the meaning of forgiveness, topics to include in forgiveness education, and benefits and challenges of forgiveness education. We compared responses between Greek teachers with and without experience delivering forgiveness education and between Greek and Saudi teachers. Greek teachers with and without forgiveness education experience had different views of the benefits and practical challenges of forgiveness education. The Greek and Saudi teachers differed in how they understood forgiveness in relation to reconciliation, excusing behavior, mercy, and beliefs about the benefits of forgiveness education for the classroom. Implications for the implementation of forgiveness education and teacher training are discussed.

This research aimed to (1) create a charism model for personnel administration of school under the 'Sisters of Saint Joseph of the Apparition' in Thailand, in order to increase the commitment of personnel to the organization, and (2) demonstrate and improve the charism model. The research process was divided into three steps as follows: (1) developing a charism model, (2) demonstrating the model, and 3) enhancing the model. The findings revealed that the charism model for personnel management consisted of two factors. The first factor (charism) included (1) Agape Love, (2) Humility, (3) Altruism, (4) Vision, (5) Trust, (6) Service, and (7) Empowering. The second factor (personnel management) included (1) Planning, Recruitment and Positioning, (2) Promotion, Absence and Evaluation, (3) Performance, (4) Disciplinary Work and History Registration, (5) Code of Professional Ethics, and (6) Other Tasks Assignment. The researcher also developed a charism-based integrated personnel management manual for Saint Emilie school. The demonstration of the results revealed that lecturers and staff were satisfied with personnel management at the highest level. As the researcher considered each variable, the operational aspect had the highest average score, whereas salary, promotion, taking leave and evaluation had the lowest score. The six dimensions of the charism model for improving personnel administration were adjusted accordingly.

The purpose of the research was to discover whether self compassion and interpersonal mindfulness predict forgiveness in adulthood. In this study, data were gathered from 547 participants, 345 of whom were female ([x-bar]=80.72, sd=16.51) and 202 of whom were male ([x-bar]=81.60, sd=17.33) and between the ages of 22 and 65. "Personal Information Form", "Heartland Forgiveness Scale", "Self Compassion Scale", and "Interpersonal Mindfulness Scale" are the measuring instruments. Multiple regression analysis was conducted on the data. According to a multivariate regression analysis, self compassion and interpersonal mindfulness are predictors of forgiveness. In addition, regression analysis revealed that self compassion and interpersonal mindfulness accounted for 39% of the overall variance in adult forgiveness. In light of the literature and study, the findings are interpreted and defended, and numerous recommendations are provided.

Purpose: This study investigates the fairness preference of five-year-old children in Shanghai, observing their distributive behaviors in both stakeholder and spectator games and showing how this behavior is linked to their family background. Design/Approach/Methods: Participants had to make distributive choices in two experiments and distribute between themselves and another participant in the first choice. They had to distribute between two other participants in luck, merit, or efficiency situations in the second choice. Findings: The results suggest that preschoolers showed a preference for splitting equally between themselves and another participant. The second choice showed a significant difference in fairness preference under a situation of luck between genders, and only children were more likely to accept an unequal allocation than those who had siblings. Originality/Value: We believe that our study makes a significant contribution to the literature because it illustrates the variety of factors that can influence a child's fairness preference and fairness behavior and suggests when and how these aspects develop in children. Further, this is an original study exploring the fairness preference of preschoolers in Shanghai using an experimental economics method.

The COVID-19 pandemic required higher education administrators to lead their institutions through a period of unprecedented ambiguity and complexity. In just two short years, a new set of skills and leadership tactics for academic leadership emerged for successfully navigating uncharted territory. Following a review of 13 research studies in higher education leadership, five central themes concerning pandemic leadership ultimately formed the basis of this literature review: open and effective communication, leading with compassion and care, flexible leadership in the face of uncertainty, transformational leadership, and adaptive leadership. The aim of this study is to examine the relationship between positive and negative childhood experiences, forgiveness and social exclusion experiences of individuals in adolescence. The research was carried out using the relational survey technique, one of the quantitative research methods. The participants of the study consisted of middle school and high school students (n=669), 354 girls and 315 boys, aged between 11 and 17, in the fall semester of the 2021-2022 academic year. The data collection tools employed within the study are: Personal Information Form, Adolescent Ostracism (Social exclusion) Scale to measure the social exclusion levels of the participants, Childhood Happiness/Peace Memories Scale to measure their positive experience levels, Childhood Experiences Scale to measure their negative experience levels, and Forgiveness Scale for Adolescents to measure their tendency to forgive. For the analysis of the data, SPSS 26.00 package program was utilized and descriptive analysis, correlation, and multiple regression analysis were conducted. As a result of the data analysis, it was observed that exclusion dimension within the social exclusion scale has a higher mean score than the disregarding dimension, exclusion dimension features higher significance, the social exclusion experiences of the adolescents differ significantly in favor of the female adolescents in the neglected dimension.

This study, using a transcendental phenomenological approach, explored the perceptions and experiences of school counselor trainees participating in a self-care course grounded in mindfulness and social--emotional learning. Seven students who enrolled in a master's-level school counseling program and completed a summer self-care course shared their experiences, leading to the identification of five key themes: (a) recognizing the importance and need for self-care, (b) cultivating a nonjudgmental mindset toward challenging emotions, (c) integrating self-care into both personal and professional settings, (d) an increase in compassion and empowerment, and (e) a commitment to ongoing learning and advocacy. The school counselor trainees' narratives highlight the importance of self-care as a way to reclaim power within themselves and become change agents in their school communities.

Social media can contribute to an inclusive society, but they are also asymmetrical and polarised communication spaces. This requires competent teachers to build critical digital citizenship. The aim of this article is twofold: to present web scraping and text analytics as tools that define teachers' digital competences, and to investigate which posts on Twitter and Instagram are most viral in relation to education, disability and inclusion. A total of 48,991 publications in Spanish and English were analysed, corresponding to the period from 13 October 2021 to 1 May 2022. The 100 most viral posts were selected, and correlations were identified between the sentiment, gender and influence associated with the content, its temporal and geographic space. The results show that economic and political influence groups are the most viral, relegating non-profit organisations or individuals with altruistic outreach to second place; only on international days is this trend reversed. Bots do not interfere to impose messages; it is artificial intelligence algorithms that overshadow vindictive and humanistic content. The most influential people are predominantly male, associated with institutional accounts in the political sphere. It is concluded that Big Data and Business Intelligence tools help teachers to analyse relevant educational and social issues, and to acquire a collective ethic in the face of new educational challenges.

The mindfulness-based methods are on the rise in the mental health care of students as well as employees. Therefore, the research on self-compassion is necessary to explore abilities and personality traits that are cultivated by the mindfulness approach. Our research deals with the assessment of the level of self-compassion by the students of the Faculty of Economics and Management at the Czech University of Life Sciences to precise the planned mindfulness-based intervention. Further, the gender and personality specifics as well as a connection to academic achievement are examined. For this purpose, the Self-compassion Scale, and the NEO-PI-R were used. The results proved insignificant correlations between the self-compassion subscales and self-reported grades, but also subtle differences in the structure of the self-compassion by males and females. Further, correlations between the neuroticism and the Self-compassion Scale and its subscales were revealed. Structural equation modeling was involved to gain more complex insight in the researched area.
