This article constructs a comprehensive new model of the contemporary class structure of Germany. More specifically, inspired by Pierre Bourdieu's geometric conception of class relations and drawing on original survey data, it adopts multiple correspondence analysis paired with cluster analysis to chart the German 'social space', that is, the relational configuration of key forms of capital. It then explores correspondences with occupational groups, ethnic groups, other demographic features, lifestyle practices and tastes. The results disclose specific structuring effects of German peculiarities on the distribution of social power, including East–West reunification and the long-running guestworker programme. More fundamentally, though, in its basic structure, the space resembles that mapped by Bourdieu in France and those documented by others elsewhere, suggesting common principles of social and symbolic differentiation among Western capitalist societies. 5.

Zettelmeier, Werner
- Abstract
The Covid pandemic was an enormous challenge for the school systems in Germany and France, which highlighted the strengths, but especially the weaknesses of both systems. The contribution outlines on the one hand the consequences resulting from school closures (distance learning and digitalisation), but also the negative effects in the form of learning delays and the absence of fundamental socialising experiences if school is experienced by young people only as a virtual place. The social inequalities in access to education that existed before the pandemic have thus been reinforced. Secondly, the different modes of governance of the school system as a whole (federalism in Germany and highly centralised top-down management in France) and the consequences of these types of management for the management of the pandemic in the education system are discussed.

CHILDREN'S health , *MENTAL illness , *PARENT-child relationships , *FAMILY relations , *FAMILY conflict , *RELATIONSHIP quality - Abstract
This study investigated potential differences in mental health among children living in sole physical custody (SPC), asymmetric joint physical custody (JPC), and symmetric JPC; and it tested whether children's age moderated the association between physical custody arrangements and children's mental health. Using data from the Family Models in Germany (FAMOD) and Norwegian Dynamics of Family Conflict (FAMC) studies, we estimated OLS regression models for children aged 2 to 14. In the German sample, children in asymmetric JPC had fewer mental health problems than children in SPC. However, this difference disappeared when controlling for various background variables, including the quality of parent-child relationships. Additionally, children's age moderated the association between physical custody arrangements and children's mental health problems, with increasing age being related to fewer mental health problems in asymmetric JPC. This association remained even after controlling for the background variables. In the Norwegian sample, no differences were found in children's mental health across physical custody arrangements; nor did children's age moderate the association. The results of this study emphasize that there may be cultural differences in how children's mental health is related to their physical custody arrangements. Furthermore, there are modest indications that asymmetric JPC may be related to better mental health among older children in Germany. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

LONG-term health care , *ELDER care , *SUSTAINABLE investing , *HEALTH insurance , *HEALTH care reform - Abstract
Long‐term care provision and financing are becoming increasingly important matters in all ageing economies. Therefore, a major challenge for policy makers is to strike a balance between adequate care and sustainable financing. In this study, we evaluate the proposal of a so‐called sustainability factor in German long‐term care insurance. Considering changes in the beneficiary‐contributor ratio, it aims for a rule‐based consideration of demographic dynamics to alleviate pressure on long‐term care financing. Using the framework of generational accounting, we demonstrate that this proposal could have a relieving effect on finances, depending on the share of involvement of current and future generations. It may offer an option for pay‐as‐you‐go long‐term care insurance systems worldwide that need to curb the impact of ageing societies. Therefore, this article addresses policy makers tasked with designing a sustainable financing model for long‐term care insurance. It demonstrates that the sustainability factor represents a step towards sustainable finances and, thus, it might be one component of a more comprehensive reform package. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

THEMES in art , *NINETEENTH century , *MODERN society , *HOME detention , *GERMAN philosophy , *AESTHETICS - Abstract
In a period of global pandemic and confinement to our homes, the end of art is not only a philosophical hypothesis, it is a fact of society. We have experienced that modern societies, those that were able to make art an absolute at one point in their history, no longer need the arts, or the physical presence of artists and spectators, or have considered them inessential, and therefore contingent. Is this what G. W. F. Hegel prophesied with his thesis of the end of art? In this paper I aim to clarify this by referring to the sources of Hegel's lectures and by examining the reception by nineteenth-century French writers. 1) First, I give a reminder of the different ways in which Hegel's theme of the end of art can be interpreted. 2) Then, I give a second reminder concerning the reception of Hegel's Aesthetics in France, with a focus on the translations. 3) Finally, I propose to study three writers who determine three ways of conceiving the appropriation of Hegel in the 19th century and of the theme of the end of art: Théophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire and Gustave Flaubert.

DISCOURSE , *INTERNATIONAL relations - Abstract
In non-English-speaking countries, international relations (IR) scholars often face considerable pressure to publish in international journals and address international debates. At the same time, they are expected to cater to national publics, politicians, and funding agencies. In this article, we investigate how German IR scholars navigate this terrain and whether a national IR discourse still exists in Germany. To answer this question, we analyze citation patterns and the formulation of the puzzle in twenty-five volumes of the Zeitschrift für Internationale Beziehungen , the German flagship journal of IR. We find that two-thirds of scholarly works cited in those articles are written in English. References to German-language literature cluster in articles written by authors without disciplinary affiliation in IR. The majority of research puzzles are also situated firmly in international discourses, while only a minority really target German debates. We conclude that not much of a distinctively German conversation over matters of IR is left, at least in academia. What is still there revolves around German foreign policy, theory issues, and, to some extent, European studies. On most other issues, authors link up directly to international debates even when addressing their German colleagues in German. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

AGE differences , *GAY couples - Abstract
This paper analyses the age and educational homogamy of same-sex couples in Germany over a 20-year period from 1996 to 2015. Data of the Microcensus show that cohabiting same-sex couples are less likely to be homogamous than cohabiting different-sex couples, both in terms of age and education. For same-sex couples, gender matters, male same-sex couples being the most diverse. The analyses thus confirm previous results for other European countries. Hitherto, changes in the homogamy of same-sex couples over time had not been studied in Europe, mainly due to data constraints. However, major changes in the visibility and legal acceptance of same-sex couples suggest that their patterns of partner choice are becoming more similar to those of different-sex couples. Our analyses show that the age difference among female same-sex couples has indeed narrowed over time, converging with the age difference among different-sex couples. For male same-sex couples though, there is no clear trend. In terms of educational homogamy, contrary to our assumption, we find a clear decline among same-sex couples of both genders since the 2000s, making them even more dissimilar to different-sex couples.

In this article, we analyze headscarf debates that unfolded in the first decade of the twenty-first century in France, the Netherlands, and Germany. Through a socio-historical overview looking at newspaper articles and policy and legal documents, we show how the headscarf has become a site for negotiating immigrant-related, postcolonial difference. We argue that certain feminist understanding of gender liberation and postcolonial difference in the headscarf debates reveal the continuity of control mechanisms from the colonial to the postcolonial era. We highlight the possibilities for decolonial thought and practice by centering the situatedness of headscarf. This allows us to show how Muslim citizens are active participants in producing contemporary Western European histories even as some of their practices face overt rejection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

WORKING class , *SOCIAL security , *LABOR laws , *INTERNATIONAL law - Abstract
Platform work confronts traditional social security law in two dimensions. First, it makes the distinction between dependent and independent work uncertain and unclear, as the borderline between these blur. This is a profound challenge for social security law, because the criteria of dependent and independent work have to be precise. In the determination of work as dependent or independent, German law illustrates that a shift has taken place in determining employment status, moving from external and objective criteria to the contracting parties' decision, which is to be executed under private law, but also respected under social security law. Second, platform work is heavily intertwined with digital communication, which has established a global environment for communication. Thereby, platform work can also facilitate international trade by making transnational work more accessible and efficient. Therefore, it seems necessary to examine the implications of platform work in international law. International law makes possible the choice of law, executed by the contracting parties. As a consequence, the protection of employees by social security law is related to the private law arrangements between the service provider and the service recipient. Gaps in social security protection of service providers are widespread. In many countries, awareness of the social protection deficits of platform workers has grown and responses to improve the social status of platform workers have come under scrutiny. Analysis reveals that there is a joint responsibility of the service provider and the service recipient to be bound to social security coverage under the same national legislation. Nevertheless, from an international law perspective, it is shown that reforms are confronted with restrictions under international law. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The evolution and interrelationships of carnivorous squamates (mosasaurs, snakes, monitor lizards, Gila Monsters) are a contentious part of reptile systematics and go to the heart of conflict between morphological and molecular data in inferring evolutionary history. One of the best-preserved fossils in this motley grouping is "Saniwa" feisti Stritzke, 1983, represented by complete skeletons from the early-middle Eocene of Messel, Germany. We re-describe it on the basis of superficial examination, stereoradiography, and high-resolution X-ray computed tomography of new and published specimens. The scalation of the lizard is unique, consisting of small, keeled scales on the head (including a row of enlarged medial supraorbitals) and large, rhomboidal, keeled scales (invested by osteoderms) that covered the rest of the body. Two paired longitudinal rows of enlarged scales ran down the neck. The head was laterally compressed and box-shaped due to the presence of a strong canthal-temporal ridge; the limbs and tail were very long. Notable osteological features include: a toothed, strap-like vomer; septomaxilla with a long posterior process; palpebral with a long posterolateral process; a lacrimal boss and a single lacrimal foramen; a well-developed cultriform process of the parabasisphenoid; two hypoglossal (XII) foramina in addition to the vagus; a lack of resorption pits for replacement teeth; and possibly the presence of more than one wave of developing replacement teeth per locus. There are no osteological modifications suggestive of an intramandibular hinge, but postmortem displacement of the angular-prearticular-surangular complex in multiple specimens suggests that there might have been some degree of mobility in the lower jaw based on soft-tissue modifications. Using phylogenetic analyses on a data-set comprising 473 morphological characters and 46 DNA loci, we infer that a monophyletic Palaeovaranidae Georgalis, 2017, including Eosaniwa Haubold, 1977, lies on the stem ofVaranidae Merrem, 1820, basal to various Cretaceous Mongolian taxa. We transfer feisti to the new genus Paranecrosaurus n. gen. Analysis of gut contents reveals only the second known specimen of the cryptozoic lizard Cryptolacerta hassiaca Muller, Hipsley, Head, Kardjilov, Hilger, Wuttke & Reisz, 2011, confirming a diet that was at least partly carnivorous; the preservation of the teeth of C. hassiaca suggests that the gastric physiology of Paranecrosaurus feisti (Stritzke, 1983) n. comb. had high acidity but low enzyme activity. Based on the foregoing and linear discriminant function analysis, we reconstruct P. feisti n. comb., as a powerful, widely roaming, faunivorous-carnivorous stem monitor lizard with a sensitive snout. If the molecular phylogeny of anguimorphs is correct, then many of the features shared by Helodermatidae Gray, 1837 and Varanidae must have arisen convergently, partly associated with diet. In that case, a reconciliation of morphological and molecular data would require the discovery of equally primitive fossils on the helodermatid stem. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper attends to the activity of care as it is articulated, enacted and contested within a drug consumption room in Germany. Drawing on empirical data generated during a long-term participatory ethnography conducted in Frankfurt, our analysis attends to the 'invisible labors' of care, alongside the more visible practices by which care is enacted and contested. We unsettle depictions of care as innate and unproblematic components of service delivery in consumption rooms by interrogating care's 'fraught politics'. While mapping relations of care woven through the consumption room, we ask, what modes of care are constrained, subjugated, erased, or neglected within these spaces? We also investigate how diverse modalities of care intersect in the consumption room, what experiences of caring are produced amidst these intersections, for whom, and to what effect. Our analysis aims to make the practices, logics, and techniques that constitute care in the consumption room amenable to critical reflection. In so doing, we contribute to recent discussions of the ethics of care, and they ways it might sustain novel modes of social, affective and material care in drug consumption rooms. HUMANITY , *NAZIS , *NATIONAL socialism - Abstract
As part of his functions, Kurt Daluege was a high-profile genocidal operator who, in the service of the unspeakable inhumanity of the Nazi State, partially supervised the crimes against humanity perpetrated in Poland, Bohemia and Moravia, and the Soviet Union. He also acted as a major vehicle for SS ideology. In addition to having two monographs to his credit, Daluege wrote or delivered a large number of articles and speeches, with the assistance of his office staff. From a quantitative standpoint, his textual output, comparable to that of Himmler, was considerably greater than that of any SS officer. The purpose of this study is to examine SS ideology as understood and developed by Daluege. The aim here is not to describe the Ordnungspolizei itself — its organization and evolution — or Daluege's managerial responsibilities within it. Rather, this article seeks to present him as both an orator and an SS writer. It aims to address how Daluege, from the onset of the Nazi regime, contributed in his own way to the expression of SS thought through his interpretation of an ideology for which Himmler represented, within the Black Corps, the final guarantee. Worthy of note is that Daluege's thinking included unique elements, which gave it a personal and particular tone within SS thought. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Since the beginning of 2018, non-sexist language has been one of the main controversies in the German public opinion. In addition to linguistic arguments, this controversy involves frequent allusions to anti-feminist and "anti-gender" discourses. It thus appears that the debates on non-sexist language are much more closely related than it seems to current debates on gender equality policies. Our analysis of a selection of the main arguments against non-sexist language, published mainly in the liberal and conservative press, highlights the need to further explore the links between these discourses and contemporary antifeminism. The advance of digitization has meant a quantum leap in oral history (extensive dissemination of sound and image recordings, efficiency of data processing, extended research subjects, new relationship to public space, new possibilities for analysis). This situation raises methodological and ethical questions for analysis and archiving. If oral historians have developed guidelines to promote the dignity and protection of project participants, the new opportunities afforded by technological changes imply to agree on new ethical standards related to new technologies (internet, storage media) and future usage. This article is an exploration of the ethical issues around reusing interview documents. To this end, the author outlines various professional standards and discusses specific questions based on her own project experiences. Finally, with reference to existing guidelines, the author proposes a way of addressing research ethical issues related to the historiographical reuse of interview documents.

A group of scholars of African heritage convened in Berlin in December of 2017 to found a collective named 'Network for Black Perspectives in Research and Teaching'. One of its foundational tasks is to bridge the divide between Black Studies and African Studies in Germany. This text is one of the manifestations of this collective engagement. In a reflexive rather than normative exercise, our text explores how Black Studies scholarship and African Studies scholarship are impacted by the 'coloniality of knowledge and power' and by the 'violences of modernity'. We aim towards understanding our own entrapment, freedoms, complicity and solidarity as complex and layered realities. We draw on concepts of social cartography to conceptualize our embeddedness in the academy and to envision ways of navigating it in a decolonial mode. Borrowing from transnational decolonial scholarship, we attempt to map out the violent landscape we are faced with in African Studies and how we experience or endure harm in these spaces. We discuss four spaces of engagement, entrapment or reclamation within the wider institutional ecosystem of the University: The 'Everything is Awesome' space, the 'Soft-Reform' space, the 'Radical-Reform' space and the 'Beyond-Reform' space. Our collective text is generated from structured conversations around amplifying the voices of those who inhabit the shadow side of modernity in the context of transnational African Studies. This article argues that mass-mediated public discourse produces a discourse on emotion and disseminates specific feeling rules for different groups of people by studying one of the most heated debates on immigrant integration in Germany during the past decade – that surrounding Thilo Sarrazin's book Germany Does Itself In. Adapting and further developing Arlie Hochschild's notion of feeling rules as a 'sensitising concept' within a grounded theory approach, it analyses 427 statements about ordinary Germans' emotions, which were drawn from a corpus of 961 newspaper articles, letters to the editor and other items. The article shows that the debate's discourse on emotion assigned different sets of emotions to two different groups of ordinary Germans: 'Autochthonous Germans' were predominantly described as having Angst (German for anxiety), while 'immigrants from Muslim-majority countries' were partly described as being offended or hurt. It also conveyed different sets of feeling rules for each of them. While 'autochthonous Germans' were generally not asked to control their Angst, there was a tendency to ask 'immigrants from Muslim-majority countries' to hold back their feelings. The article interprets this pattern as an unequal distribution of recognition and discusses how future research may benefit from the approach presented here. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
Following his expulsion from the Surrealist movement, Philippe Soupault turned to journalism to earn a living. Between 1932 and 1936 he regularly traveled to Germany to report on the events in the neighboring country, both as a reporter and special envoy for newspapers such as Vu and especially Excelsior. Amidst a widespread indifference, the poet became a lucid observer of the rise of Nazism. Although he addressed political issues, it was the more anonymous people who interested him. In order to gauge the extent of desperation among the Germans and on the lookout for the slightest sign of revolt, he observed the crowds, questioned students, the bourgeoisie, peasants, intellectuals, and the unemployed alike. Following the increasing pressure on foreign journalists, dialogues disappeared from his writings: the crowd gradually took on the appearance of mass, a symptom of the rupture between the poet and the German people., Philippe Soupault, tras su expulsión del surrealismo, se dedicó al periodismo para ganarse la vida.
