The resistance of common wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), a traditional Ukrainian crop, to allelopathic weeds in the early stages of cultivation has not been sufficiently analysed up to now. Contradictory information on the chemical interaction between wheat and couch grass (Elymus repens L.) has led to a detailed investigation of the effect of couch grass. The aim of the experiment was to investigate the effect of the aqueous extracts of couch grass rhizomes collected in Vinnytsia region, western and south-western Ukraine on wheat seed germination and further seedling development. It was found that the presence of couch grass extracts inhibited the energy of seed germination in all experimental treatments. The couch grass extract with a concentration of 1:1000 had a stimulating effect on the germination and subsequent growth of wheat seedlings compared to the control treatment, in which the wheat seeds were germinated in the distilled water. On the 4th day of the experiment, the couch grass extracts at higher concentrations (1:100 and 1:10) significantly reduced the length of the germ root of wheat by 0.25 and 0.30 cm. On the 7th day of wheat seed germination, measurements of the stem length showed a decrease by 56.2% and 51.4% compared to the control treatment. Thus, the inhibitory effect was maybe decreasing within 5-11 days of the germination of wheat seeds depending on the concentration of allelopathically active substances of couch grass in an aqueous solution. ROOT formation , *DISTILLED water , *INTRODUCED species , *PLANT residues , *ROOT growth , *OATS - Abstract
The plant residues of the Sosnowsky's hogweed (Heracleum sosnowskyi Manden.), an invasive species, have a strong allelopathic effect. The paper presents data on the influence of H. sosnowskyi leaf aqueous extract extract (10%, prepared in 10 g dry weight : 100 ml distilled water) and its dilute solutions (5, 2, 1 and 0.5% concentrations) on seedling oat germination rates. Control - distilled water. Sosnowsky's hogweed leaf extract (10%) significantly inhibited oat grain germination, which was 69.3% and was 21.5 relative units lower than in the control. The extract most inhibited the germination intensity of the grains. After 72 hours of germination, it was barely 38.7 percent. The effect of the extract and dilute solutions on the length of the coleoptiles was not significant except for the 2% concentration solution. In it, the coleoptiles were 1.08 times longer than in the control. The solution at this concentration promoted the growth of roots and the intensity of their formation. The roots were insignificantly 1.07 times longer and formed on average 1.12 times significantly more than in the control. However, a 2% concentration solution inhibited root fibrilla formation, with an area of 34.12% of the root lenght. Substantially the shortest roots (8.7 cm) and the lowest (1.10) root/coleoptile lenght ratio, or RCR, were determined by germination at 10% in the extract. The highest RCR (1.57), root area (51.26%) and vigor index (1847.56) were in the control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The consumption of fresh vegetables has been consistently associated with numerous health benefits. However, several factors (such as allelochemicals) influence yield, quality, and metabolites, which inevitably affect the fruit quality and health benefits. The present study was conducted to investigate the yield, quality, metabolic responses, and potential toxicity of Cucumis sativus grown in juglone-containing soils. For the treatments, pure juglone (100 µM, 1 mM) and walnut leaf extracts (100 µM) in soil concentrations found in walnut orchards were used. A total of 36 phenolic compounds were identified and quantified in fruits, leaves, and roots using a mass spectrometer coupled with high-performance liquid chromatography. We concluded that juglone at a concentration of 100 µM or walnut leaf extract at the same juglone concentration does not affect the yield of C. sativus, while juglone at a concentration of 1 mM strongly affects it. In the case of juglone, juglone itself was found only in the roots of C. sativus, but not in the leaves or fruits, so C. sativus fruits are considered safe for cultivation in juglone-containing soils. However, this could prove problematic if the plants grown are tubers or root vegetables. The data suggest that juglone itself inhibits secondary metabolism in the plant, making it more susceptible to stress and pathogen attacks.

Medicinal and aromatic plants with allelopathic effect are a potential source of natural herbicides. The experiment was conducted in order to assess herbicidal potential of meadow sage (Salvia pratensis L.) on germination and growth of weed species velvetleaf (Abutilon theophrasti Med.) and common corn-cockle (Agrostemma githago L.). Water extracts from S. pratensis dry biomass in different concentrations were evaluated under controlled laboratory conditions in Petri dish bioassay. Herbicidal effect of S. pratensis extracts depended on the extract concentration and weed species. In general, higher concentrations of water extract showed greater negative effect on germination and growth parameters of weed seedlings. A. githago had greater sensitivity to S. pratensis extracts with reductions in germination and seedlings growth up to 100% in treatments with 7.5% and 10% extract concentrations. A. theophrasti germination was not affected by water extracts, however, substantial reductions of root and shoot length as well as fresh weight of seedlings were recorded. S. pratensis proved as promising plant species for further studies., Ljekovite i aromatične biljke s alelopatskim djelovanjem potencijalni su izvor prirodnih herbicida. Spice plant contain many biologically active substances. They can affect other plant growth and development. The article presents research of the effect of aqueous extracts from coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) leafs and influorescences on the germination (germination energy and germination) of lentil (Lens culinaris Med.) 'Smėlinukai' variety seeds and the growth (root lenght, schoots height) in early development stages. The treatments of investigation were as follows: 1) aqueous extracts of coriandes leaves, concentration 1 : 12 and 1 : 30 (biomass : distilled water); 2) aqueous extracts of coriandes linfluorescences, concentration 1 : 12 and 1 : 30. The control was distilled water. The experiment was conducted at the Plant Physiology Laboratory of the Agricultural academy Vytautas Magnum university. It was determined that the germination of the lentil seeds was insignificantly suppressed, essentiality - the formation of sprouts and primary roots. As the concentration of the aqueous extract increased, the inhibitory effect increased. The most inhibitory effect was the 1:12 concentration coriander influorescenses aqueous extract. Its impact on the average lentil sprouts length was 16.66 mm. They were substantially 2.21 times shorter than germinated distilled water (control). The roots were 4.79 mm long, or 11.71 times shorter than the distilled water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Allelopathy is a phenomenon in which plants inhibit the growth of neighboring plants by releasing allelochemicals. The aim of our study was to investigate the allelopathic effect of invasive knotweeds, Japanese knotweed (Fallopia japonica) and Bohemian knotweed (F. ×bohemica) on morphological, biochemical, molecular, and ultrastructural characteristics of roots of the tested species garden radish (Raphanus sativus). Extracts from both knotweeds differed in the content of resveratrol. Methanol extracts had a stronger allelopathic effect on radish than individual allelochemicals. In addition, aqueous extracts inhibited seed germination and root growth of 3-day-old radish seedlings. In particular, the content of total glutathione, ascorbate, and proline increased in the roots, indicating signs of oxidative stress. The expression of some genes related to ascorbate-glutathione cycle and programmed cell death were also altered. The extracts also increased the activities of caspase- and metacaspase-like proteases. The cell organization in root tissues was altered. Many cells from the outermost layer of the root cap were destroyed. The most prominent changes at the ultrastructural level were found in the root cap cells: plasmalemma was detached from the cell wall, mitochondria were damaged, endoplasmic reticulum changed and spherical electron dense inclusions appeared in the cytoplasm. The meristem cells were also altered. In long-term exposure, the 10 % extract of Bohemian knotweed showed the strongest inhibitory potential, causing the destruction of almost all plants. The primary root growth of the treated radish was strongly inhibited in the first half, after 14 days the root of the surviving plants reached the control level, oxidative stress related parameters did not increase. Knotweed allelopathy showed an inhibitory effect mainly on the growth of radish seedlings, which induce oxidative stress in the roots, leading to programmed cell death.

23. Dihidrohalkoni jabuke florizin i floretin kao nove alelopatske supstance
- Abstract
Tretman floretinom izaziva značajnu inhibiciju rastenja i razvića klijanaca A. thaliana, poremećaj gravitropskog odgovora i pojavu morfoloških i ultrastrukturnih malformacija u čijoj osnovi leži promena ekspresije CDKA1;1, CDKB2;1, CYCA3;1 i CYCB2;4 gena ćelijskog ciklusa, kao i gena uključenih u održanje homeostaze auksina (PINs, AUX1, LAX3, ABCBs, TAA1 i YUCs) i biosinteze giberelina (GA20ox2 i GA3ox1). Ovo otvara mogućnost za dalja istraživanja njihovog alelopatskog delovanja ali i potencijalnu primenu kao ekološki bezbednih bioherbicida., Phloridzin and phloretin are dihydrochalcones highly specific to domestic apple (Malus × domestica Borkh.) and other species from genus Malus. Auto-allelopathic potential of these phenolics was recognized in ‘Apple Replant Disease’ (ARD) characterized by stunted growth, reduced root system and low yields in apple trees replanted on lands that previously supported apple orchards. Physiological basis of phloridzin and phloretin autotoxicity are ultrastructural and molecular alterations that include increased catalase, peroxidases and superoxide dismutase activities, raised malondialdehyde and proline contents, and high expression of genes involved in cell defence system. The latest research on model plant Arabidopsis thaliana indicates phytotoxicity of these dihydrochalcones towards other plant species. Phloretin inhibits A. thaliana seedlings growth and development inducing agravitropic phenotype and morphological and ultrastructural malformations in treated seedlings. Altered expression of CDKA1;1, CDKB2;1, CYCA3;1 and CYCB2;4 cell cycle genes and genes involved in auxin homeostasis (PINs, AUX1, LAX3, ABCBs, TAA1 and YUCs) and gibberellin biosynthesis (GA20ox2 and GA3ox1) are in the physiological bases of phloretin phytotoxicity. This mechanism makes phloretin a prospective candidate for an eco-friendly bioherbicide and paves the way for further research of phloretin role in ARD.

U laboratorijskom dijelu istraživanja sjeme kukuruza tretirano je punom (x) i reduciranim dozama herbicida Adenga (1/2, ¼, 1/8, 1/16 x) i s feruličnom/p-hidroksibenzojevom kiselinom dodanim istim dozacijama herbicida. Navedeni dio prethodio je biotestu u klima komori u kojem je kukuruz tretiran istim dozacijama herbicida samostalno i u kombinaciji s feruličnom kiselinom. Iako su u laboratorijskom dijelu fenolne kiseline pojačale redukcijski učinak herbicida Adenga na klijavost i rani rast kukuruza, vizualnom ocjenom oštećenja nadzemne mase nisu utvrđena značajna oštećenja mladih biljaka kukuruza. Maize silage is an important raw material for biogas production. In silage maize cultivation, weeds are the limiting factor, and weed control is a basic agrotechnical measure, mainly through the use of herbicides. However, the goal of the EU Green Plan strategy is to reduce the use of pesticides by 50% by 2030. Therefore, alternative methods of weed control are needed. Phenolic acids have the potential to inhibit the growth of weeds. Therefore, the possibility of their application with significantly reduced herbicide doses is being investigated. The aim of the research is to determine the selectivity of maize to the combination of reduced doses of herbicide and phenolic acid. In the laboratory part of the study, maize seeds were treated with full (x) and reduced doses of the herbicide Adenga (1/2, ¼, 1/8, 1/16 x) and with ferulic acid/p-hydroxybenzoic acid added to the same herbicide doses. The mentioned part preceded the bioassay in the climate chamber, where maize was treated with the same herbicide doses alone and in combination with ferulic acid. Although in the laboratory part the phenolic acids enhanced the reducing effect of the herbicide Adengo on the germination and early growth of maize, the visual assessment of the injury to the aboveground mass did not reveal any significant damage to young maize plants.

V zadnjem času vse več raziskav poteka v smeri koristne uporabe invazivnih tujerodnih rastlinskih vrst. Recently, a lot of studies have been done on the beneficial uses of invasive alien plant species (IAPS). In our master's thesis, we were interested in whether IAPS extracts could be used to control the seeds of the perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne). In a laboratory experiment, we investigated whether extracts from the non-root plant parts of knotweed (Fallopia sp.), American pokeweed (Phytolacca americana), staghorn sumac (Rhus typhina), and Himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera) in any way affect the germination of perennial ryegrass. In addition, HPLC was used to analyze which phenolic compounds are present in studied species and how the time of extraction affects the content of these compounds in the extracts. From the experimental results, the extracts of knotweed, American pokeweed, and staghorn sumac inhibit seed germination and growth of the root and shoot of perennial ryegrass. Himalayan balsam extract had an inhibitory effect on seed germination and perennial ryegrass shoot growth. Extraction with methanol proved to be an efficient way to extract phenolic compounds from these plants. Longer extraction time significantly affected the content of hydroxycinnamic acids and hydroxybenzoic acids in staghorn sumac extract, the content of flavanols in the extract of knotweed, American pokeweed, and staghorn sumac, and the content of flavonols in the extract of staghorn sumac and Himalayan balsam.

The experiment was carried out in two stages in laboratory Biology and Plant biotechnology institute Aleksandras Stulginskis University at 2017. Was estabilished on the effects of the aqueous true hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) extracts (50 %, 20 % and 10 % concentration) of winter rape (Brassica napus L. ssp. biennis) seeds germination (germination energy, germination, root and sprouts lengths). Germination energy was determined after 4 days, germination -- after 7 days. Extracts produced from: a -- Cannabis sativa seeds, b -- ground part of the Cannabis sativa plant. Control -- distilled water. It was found that the effect depended not only on extract concentration in the experiment, but also the production part of the plant used (seeds or ground part of the plant). The effect of Cannabis sativa seeds extracts was: 50 % concentration extract inhibited winter rape seed germination energy (68,7 %), sprouts and root elongation. Average height was 21,9 mm and average length 32,6 mm. Seeds germination energy in control variant was 72 %, the average length of the roots was 55,4 mm, the sprouts height -- 34,0 mm. All concentrations of the Cannabis sativa extracts increased rape seed germination. The germination of control rape seeds was 78,7 % and in the experiment was 79,3 -- 85,0 %. The effects of the Cannabis sativa plant extract was: all concentrations inhibited rape seeds germination energy (47,8-82,2 %), germination (82,2-89,9 %), roots and sprouts elongation. Average height was 20,3-23,5 mm and length 21,3-50,2 mm. Seeds germination energy in control variant was 91,7 %, germination 93,3 %, the average sprouts height was 24,0 mm, length of the roots -- 52,7 mm. 50 % concentration extract had the most (significantly different from control) inhibit effect on the germination and root length. Brassica species have been reported as having allelopathic effect, reducing seed germination and emergence of subsequent cereal crops when grown in a rotation. Therefore, laboratory and greenhouse experiments were conducted to determine the allelopathic potential of rapeseed (Brassica napus L.) on germination and seedling growth of maize (Zea mays L.) under different salinity levels. Laboratory experiment consisted of two factors including different plant parts (root, shoot, leaf and whole plant) and their various concentrations (0, 5, 10, 15 and 20 %). In a greenhouse experiment three factors were studied including different salinity levels (0, 4 and 8 %), crop residue concentrations (0, 2 and 4 %) and decomposition time (2 and 4 weeks). The experiment was laid out in a completely randomized design with factorial arrangement where treatments were repeated five times for germination experiment conducted in Petri plates and three times for soil bioassay experiment conducted in pots. The results showed that extracts of different plant parts could not affect the germination, while different concentrations showed significant effect on maize seed germination. The interaction of extracts of different plant parts with different concentrations significantly affected the growth. Root and leaf extracts at 5% concentration produced maximum root length, shoot length and plant dry weight as compared to other plant parts at other concentrations. For the second experiment or greenhouse experiment the results showed that neither plant parts nor decomposition period could influence germination significantly. However, salinity levels showed inhibitory effect on germination with increase in salt concentration. The rapeseed residue concentration of 2% with 4% salt concentration produced maximum plant fresh and dry weight. Rapeseed showed allelopathic potential on germination and seedling growth of maize, but this influence was decreased gradually with the increase of salinity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Extensive use of synthetic pesticides has negative effects on the environment and on human and animal health. Knowledge on allelopathic interactions could provide effective tools for a better exploitation of natural resources in the management of weeds without using herbicides. One of highly resistant weed species is bromus. The effects of two concentrations (0.1% and 0.2%) of Salvia sclarea L. aqueous extract on the activity of the antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in leaves and roots of bromus (Bromus mollis L.) seedlings, were examined. Our results showed that both concentrations of the extract used (0.1% and 0.2%) stimulated the significant increase of the superoxide dismutase activity in leaves and roots of bromus 72 hours and 120 hours after the treatment. The significant increase of the catalase activity was recorded in roots of bromus 72 h after the treatment. Two tested extract concentrations affected activity of the antioxidant enzymes in the same way, but the higher activity was observed in the roots treated with higher concentration (0.2%). The increase of the activities of antioxidant enzymes, in response to stress induced by S. sclarea aqueous extract, indicate that the plant extract possesses allelopathic activity on treated plant. The aim of this study was to examine the impact of Satureja montana L. aqueous extract on soybean antioxidant properties so as to assess its possible side effects when applied as biohebicide in soybean organic production. The effects of two concentrations (0.1% and 0.2%) of S. montana aqueous extract on the activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) in leaves and roots of soybean (Glycine max L.) seedlings were examined 24, 72 and 120 h after the treatment. Our results showed that the significant increase in the catalase activity was recorded in roots of soybean treated with both concentrations of the extract used. On the other hand, both concentrations of S. montana aqueous extract stimulated the significant increase of the superoxide dismutase activity in leaves and roots of soybean. Higher activity of the antioxidant enzymes in the roots of soybean compared with activity of the antioxidant enzymes in leaves showed that roots were more affected than leaves. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this study was to explore the effect of methanol extract of himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera R., Balsaminaceae) on seed germination and on the level of oxidative stress in radish seedlings (Raphanus sativus L., Brassicaceae). Seeds of R. sativus were treated for three days with methanol extract prepared from I. glandulifera leaves (filter papers were impregnated with three doses of methanol extract: 1.5, 3 and 6 mL). As positive control 0.02 M CuSO4 solution was used, and negative control was treatment with deionized water. The model organism (R. sativus) was treated in triplicate. After three days of exposure, the fresh mass of radish seedlings was weighed. Plant tissue homogenate was prepared using trichloroacetic acid (100 mg tissue/0.5 mL TCA). As parameters of oxidative stress, the content of reduced glutathione (GSH), anthocyanin, malondialdehyde (MDA) and oxidized proteins was determined in the supernatant of the homogenates. The GSH content was determined using the Ellman method (1959), anthocyanins were measured by the pH-differential method according to Giusti and Wrolstad (2001), the MDA was determined by using the thiobarbituric test according to Heath and Packer (1968) and the content of oxidized proteins was determined by derivatization of the carbonyl group of proteins with DNPH according to Levine et al. (1990). The obtained results were statistically analysed (t-test, Excel; P

In this research, oxidative stress, as an allelopathic mechanism of himalayan balsam (Impatiens glandulifera Royle, Balsaminaceae) was examined. The level of oxidative stress was monitored by measuring the activity of antioxidative enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) in seedlings of white mustard (Sinapis alba L., Brassicaceae) and radish (Raphanus sativus L., Brassicaceae) exposed to the extract of himalayan balsam. Seeds from both plants, white mustard and radish, were exposed to a methanol extract of himalayan balsam in three doses (1.5, 3 and 6 mL). In experiment, positive control (PC, treatment with 0.02 M CuSO4) and negative control (NC, treatment with destiled water) were also included. All treatments were done in a triplicate. After 3 days of treatment, plant tissue homogenate was prepared and in its supernatant SOD activity was determined via comercial assay kit based on colorimetry. Before determining SOD activity in seedlings, the method was optimised by testing its linearity and sample preparation procedure. Obtained data on SOD activity was processed statisticaly (t-test, Excel; P ≤ 0.05). The method for assessment SOD activity was linear (R2 = 0.9406; y = 69,302x + 1,1463). Several sample dilutions were tested, and the optimal was dilution of samples 2x with sample buffer. In seedlings of white mustard after 3-days exposure to 1.5 mL of methanol extract of himalayan balsam SOD activity significantly decreased in comparison to NC (52% vs. 100%, P ≤ 0.05). With the increase of the dose of the extract in seedlings of white mustard an increase of SOD activity was recorded (3 mL: 73 %, 6 mL: 80 %). In radish seedlings 3-days exposure to methanol extract of himalayan balsam resulted with slow decrease of SOD activity and the lowest SOD activity in comparison to NC was after exposure to 3 mL of extract (86 % vs. 100 %). An increase of SOD activity after exposure to higher doses of extract of himalayan balsam (3 mL and 6 mL for white mustard and 6 mL for radish) can be explained with the synthesis of SOD as a response of seedlings to stress. Since significant decrease of SOD activity was observed in sedlings of white mustard in comparison to seedlings of radish, can be concluded that seedlings of radish has better antioxidative defence system. The obtained results indicate that oxidative stress is the mechanism of himalayan balsam allelopathy.

Invazivne rastlinske vrste so v globalnem merilu eden izmed glavnih vzrokov upadanja biotske pestrosti in izumiranja vrst. Invazivne tujerodne rastline so uspešne zaradi svojih ekološko-bioloških značilnosti, kot so hitra rast in produkcija velikega števila semen, poznejše cvetenje in mnogo drugih. With the settlement of invasive alien species in new environments, irreversible changes in ecosystems and natural habitats are happening. The biodiversity crisis is a great decline in biodiversity, which is the result of human and other influences. Invasive alien plant species are those who cause changes in the environment and can negatively affect ecosystems, native communities, human health and the economy. Invasive plant species are one of the main causes of the decline in biodiversity and species extinction on a global scale. In this assignment I focused on what kind od competitors they are with native plants and why they have an advantage in spreading and thriving in new environments. Invasive plants are successful due to their ecological and biological characteristics, such as rapid growth and production of large number of seeds, later flowering and many others. In new environments invasive alien plant species compete with native ones for habitat, water, food and other vital resources. With their mechanisms of action, they harm biodiversity through competitive relationships and species habitat changes, allelopathy, crossbreeding with native species and good resource utilization and effective adaptation to environmental changes. Rewieved literature suggests that invasive plants are certainly a threat to biodiversity, so understanding their spreading and functioning in communities is important, as well as how to take action in preventing the event of introduction into a new enviornment and suppressing spreading in the event of enlargement.

ALLELOPATHY , *GERMINATION , *GOLDENRODS - Abstract
Allelopathy refers to the beneficial or harmful effects of one organism on another by the release of biochemical. In phytocommunities, the secondary plant metabolites have the allelochemical potential and supress both seed germination and seedling growth playing an important role in determining initial establishment and subsequent spread of invasive species. The content of phenolic compounds was estimated to be different in aqueous extracts of S. canadensis due to their dissimilar accumulation in plant parts (root and shoot), growth stage and leachate concentration. As phenolics affect various physiological processes, thus altering the physiological and growth patterns of plants, the revealed TPC exhibited different allelopathic potential of S. canadensis extracts. Thus, the TPC and CCU data for the researched acceptor species suggested that S. canadensis might provide the considerably allelopathic influence on the species diversity or local out-compete of the native plants in new habitats.

GOLDENRODS , *PLANT phenols , *PLANT extracts - Abstract
Worldwide Canadian goldenrod (Solidago canadensis L.) belongs to Asteraceae and spreads across Lithuania. Ability of the species to tolerate a wide range of environmental conditions and rapid spread by different means are often outlined as characteristics determining ability to quickly colonize existing communities and become pervasive outside its native ranges. The main aim of this research was to assess the biochemical parameters of Solidago canadensis associated with its invasion success. In its aqueous extracts, the total phenolics content (TPC) ranged between 0.968 mg ml-1 and 23.591 mg ml-1 depending on the plant ontogenetic stage, part of the plant and extract concentration (r= -0.7). The extract significantly inhibited the germination of rapeseed (r= -0.8) and ryegrass (r= -0.5) across different levels of TPC. Thus, due to accumulated allelochemicals, the invasive S. canadensis might acquire distribution advantage in new territories outside the native habitat range, through the inhibitory effects on germination of native plant species.
