Simple Summary: The medical treatment of Cambridge, an Anglo-Arab stallion, was misrepresented in the Australian media. His carers were trolled on the Cyberhorse website in Victoria, Australia, in the 1990s. Emotive misrepresentations, some anonymous, led to public misogynistic and racist labelling of his owners as 'wogs' and witches. Other misrepresentations maligned the reputation of the vets and farrier (blacksmith) who treated Cambridge and led the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA) to publicly doubt the expertise of the practicing equine veterinarian and consulting specialist. Real-world harm was caused and claims based on media representations were investigated by the Veterinary Practitioners Registration Board of Victoria. The Victorian Supreme Court passed an injunction to restrain the Executive Officer, or any RSPCA inspector, from 'killing, touching, or otherwise interfering' with Cambridge. Another writ was obtained preventing the Werribee Park Equestrian Centre (WPEC) from forcibly moving Cambridge or his companion horses while Cambridge was undergoing veterinary treatment for laminitis. The Centre stopped advising Cambridge's carers of changes to his environment that would adversely affect him, yet transporting Cambridge elsewhere would have been a death sentence. Media reportage of Cambridge's welfare and treatment failed to consider the co-relationality that distinguished his treatment, or accord the horse agency in this process. Throughout, Cambridge proved an exceptional horse and patient, exhibiting what appeared to be agential adaptations to circumstances and his overall health and wellbeing. Cambridge's story urges us to consider that when making decisions about the lives of animals we should not make decisions for them, but with them. This case study aims to problematise concepts of equine and human co-relational agency in the context of 'mis-re-presentations' in the Australian media of harms experienced by the Anglo Arab stallion, Cambridge, following his development of laminitis and his consequent confinement at a leading national Equestrian centre. Autoethnographic narrative is used to retrospectively and selectively narrate the evolving relationship between Cambridge and his owners, farrier, and treating veterinarians within the dominant housing and veterinary practices and welfare paradigms in equestrian culture of 1990's Australia. Structured author/owner autoethnographic vignettes are framed by newspaper and internet reportage to highlight a productive tension between the public mediation of the case, and what it means to be fully embodied in relationship with an equine companion agent within a particular, racialised, gendered, and biopoliticised location. Adopting a phenomenologically informed intersectional feminist ethics of care perspective, a counternarrative to the gendered, racialised and essentialising rights-based judgements about Cambridge's illness and eventual death that dominated the popular media is provided. Crucially, the autoethnographic vignettes are chosen to capture the corporeal reciprocity and rapport of forces that produced a co-created agentivity that characterised the horse's birth, training, and treatment. The embodied interspecies knowledge that informs the training and care of equines (and all animal species) is always historically situated within permeable, dynamic worlds of self and other that are fluid, contextual, and always in relation. It is suggested that the case of Cambridge illustrates how competing stakeholder investments in animal welfare can play out in the public mediation of particular cases in ways that exclude their historical and interspecies situatedness and serve to reinforce dominant ideologies governing human and animal relationships. This paper moves beyond biomedical accounts of cycling health benefits to consider the situated, emergent, embodied, and relational notion of being well. In doing so, we draw on Deleuze and Guattari's account of affect to advance a conceptual framework of mobile therapeutic 'home' territories. We understand moments of being well as an emergent affective capacity generated by the coming together of socio-material relations in the process of territorialization, deterritorialization and reterritorialization. Our rhizoanalysis is based on semi-structured interviews and sketches of cycling reactivation research in inner-city Sydney, Australia, in 2020 during the first pandemic lockdown. We demonstrate that for those working at home with access to coasts and parks, riding a bike became an important enabler of becoming and being well in moments of competitiveness and playfulness. Such moments emerged from the intensified affective force of social-material relations that comprise pedalling 'home' territories as 'lifestyle sport' or as 'active free-play'. En el presente artículo, se rastrea el concepto de agencement en la obra de Deleuze y Guattari, siguiendo sus ajustes y modificaciones desde El Anti-Edipo (1972) hasta Mil mesetas (1980), pasando por Kafka, por una literatura menor (1975). A continuación, presentaremos el concepto de assemblage en Manuel DeLanda, atendiendo a sus versiones mínima y ampliada y procurando explicitar sus puntos de contacto y de tensión con los pensadores franceses. A lo largo de este recorrido, se intentará mostrar tanto la genealogía del concepto retomado por DeLanda, como la diferencia entre las preocupaciones a las que responden los agencements y aquellas a las que responden los assemblages. La transformación del concepto, en este sentido, da cuenta de un desplazamiento de la centralidad del lenguaje en beneficio de una ontología articulada con las ciencias empíricas y formales en la cual resultará central la noción de emergencia.

This article examines an understudied dimension of transnational mobilities and ageing: namely, the experiences of ageing parents who take on short-term informal jobs during their extended visits to their migrant offspring abroad. Based on ethnographic research with ageing parents in Brazil and their accounts of short-term (visitor) transnational mobilities and paid work in the United States, where their children have emigrated, the article examines how older parents on a visitor ('tourist') visa take on short-term jobs and how their work and earnings abroad make them feel empowered. The article draws on a spatio-temporal analytical framework to discuss how migrants' temporal and spatial journeys are shaped by their ability to mobilize resources such as trusted transnational networks and translate these into transnational spaces of opportunity. The article concludes that through these specific configurations of time and space older adults are able to make use of their own work to improve livelihoods for themselves and their families, which they recount as enabling and empowering. Geographic literature on diplomatic spatiality has largely focused on the official sites of diplomacy, while neglecting the importance of the diplomatic home in everyday working life. Considering this gap in the literature, the present article extends the recent interest in critical geographies of home and considers its potential in furthering our understanding of interstate diplomacy. The paper assembles the affective atmospheres of the diplomatic home through a bottom-up perspective that combines the author's personal experiences as a Finnish career diplomat inhabiting a middle-class Turkish apartment with the oral accounts of his houseguests. Attention is given to the creation of images of national culture and design through micro-scale country-branding efforts. The analysis shows that while home atmospheres can be manipulated for diplomatic ends, there are also disjunctures between idealised designs and the embodied experiences of diplomatic houseguests. This research responds to claims that status motivates car use. It extends understandings of what status is and of how status influences car use practices. The paper begins with a theoretical exploration of the concept of status and continues with a case study exploring how individuals in Christchurch, New Zealand, relate to status concerns associated with cars. Drawing on in-depth qualitative research, the paper finds that participants conceptualised status in terms of multidimensional hybrid assemblages of meaning. Further, a car had to match a person's wider social and cultural context in order to perform as a status symbol. Cars that symbolised a sense of intentional accomplishment or progression were most often associated with desired dimensions of status. The paper concludes by noting that status symbolism reflects a complex interplay of social dynamics, and that status is more than a characteristic of a material object. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, I examine the process of how entrepreneurs acquire subjectivity in creating new businesses by using the concept of agencement. In recent years, the concept of "institutional entrepreneurship" has been gaining attention in the field of entrepreneurship research, in which the entrepreneur is not regarded as an "elite individual who brings novelty to an institutionalized stable state from outside" as Schumpeter puts it, but as a being who creates innovation by utilizing existing institutions as a resource. This is an important perspective because it opens up the possibility that anyone can become an entrepreneur by taking a systematic approach to the concept of the entrepreneur from an institutional perspective, rather than relying on the transcendental qualities of the individual. However, this approach does not fully explain where the subjectivity of the entrepreneur, who is the in fact subject that ultimately aims to realize the new business, comes from. In this study, by examining the case of intrapreneurs (intracompany entrepreneurs), I use the concept of “agencement” to argue that the subjectivity of intrapreneurs does not come from transcendental personal qualities, but rather from the diverse relational networks that surround intrapreneurs and give them a role as subjects.

• A spray pre-cooled NDDCT model under crosswind conditions was developed. • The behavior of droplets under crosswind and no crosswind were compared. • Feasible nozzle arrangements were explored under different crosswinds. • Good nozzle arrangement should consider height, radius, spray angle and crosswind. Crosswind affects the airflow fields of the natural draft dry cooling towers (NDDCTs), thus the spray zones for pre-cooling the inlet air of the NDDCT might be different from no crosswind. Therefore, a 3-D model of pre-cooled NDDCT under crosswind was established by Fluent 16.2 to investigate the feasible zone of nozzle spray of a 120 m high NDDCT based on the behavior of the droplets. Six nozzle heights, nine nozzle radiuses and four spray angles were simulated for the NDDCT application within the crosswind speeds of 0∼10 m/s. The evaporation percentage of droplets higher than 99% and the maximum effective evaporation ratio are selected as the criterion for the feasible zone of nozzle arrangement. Simulation finds that: (1) the nozzle arrangement height should be set at 7 m when the crosswind speed is 0 m/s, and it should be set at 9 m when the crosswind speeds are 2 m/s, 4 m/s,6 m/s, 8 m/s and 10 m/s, respectively. (2) The feasible spray angles of nozzles are 0°and 90° at the crosswind speeds of 0∼4 m/s and 6∼10 m/s, respectively. (3) The nozzle radiuses are 0∼41.5 m at crosswind speed of 0 m/s, they are 0∼21.5 m at the crosswind speed of 2 m/s, and they are 0∼16.5 m when the crosswind speeds are 4 m/s, 6 m/s, 8 m/s and 10 m/s, respectively based on the above feasible heights and spray angles. Objective: to discuss a proposal for a relationship between Assemblage Theory and Consumer Culture Theory, highlighting possible issues for composing an agenda for researchers of both theories, based on their intersections. Design / methodology / approach: the article discusses the relevant elements of each of the theoretical perspectives, advances in the discussion of points of intersection and, finally, presents a research agenda with emerging issues. Results: there were many opportunities to establish a conversation between the two perspectives, considering the research in Consumer Affairs, especially in the Brazilian context, since the country has cultural and diversified wealth, with regard to historical and social issues, economic and demographic. The Assemblage Theory is, as evidenced, an effective option to substantiate research related to Consumer Culture Theory, as it is suitable for investigating consumers and their cultural relations. Originality: the paper sheds light on points of intersection between the two theories in order to point out new understandings of phenomena on consumption, which its heterogeneous elements can remain united without necessarily forming a coherent whole, showing that, before understanding the phenomena cultural as gestalts or holistic organizations, a contingent analysis of the alignments established by the different elements, recursively shaped, that affect their relationships must be considered. In this paper, in a Foucauldian argument, I draw attention to how psychotherapy is both produced and productive. I argue how psychotherapeutic theories and practices can contribute to generate hegemonic versions of subjectivity that limit the scope of alternative ways of living and feed into individualism. As Rose contends, the psy sciences, including psychotherapy, are highly influential in informing how we make sense of ourselves, and thus in how we produce ourselves. Psychotherapy – through assuming that its theories only reveal psychic mechanisms and that psychotherapeutic practice only helps people to know themselves better and develop – becomes extremely powerful in producing subjectivities whilst believing that it is only a matter of self-discovering. On this basis, I stress the need for questioning psychotherapy. In particular, I explore how engagement with authors associated with the so-called 'post' theories can transform psychotherapeutic theories and practices, including questioning the very existence of psychotherapy. The emerging field of responsible management (RM) studies the integration of sustainability, responsibility, and ethics in managerial practices. Therefore, turning to practice theories for the study of RM appears to hold great promise of conceptual and methodological contribution. We propose a posthumanist practice approach for studying RM-as-practice. Managerial practices are conceived as the agencement of heterogeneous elements (humans, nonhumans, more-than-humans, materials, and discourses) that achieve agency in their being interconnected. Thus, RM is understood as processual, relational, emergent, and sociomaterial. We contribute a framework for the empirical study of RM-as-practice on the basis of three sensitizing concepts: situatedness, sociomateriality, and textures. We further discuss the implications of understanding responsibility as response-ability, an engaged practice for relating to the other and the RM researcher's role as internal to the practice agencement under study, thus, opening the debate on our own response-ability. The global diffusion of the graduate school organizational model has shifted the way future academic excellence is identified from a paternalistic master–disciple relationship to a collective organizational decision. 'Eminent men' used to recruit PhD students on the firm belief that they could identify excellence and integrate it in their own scientific endeavor. Graduate schools formalize such judgments and transform them into an organizational decision. They establish admission devices to assure criteria-based collective decisions. To understand this shift, the article draws on the example of two German graduate schools that proclaim to search for outstanding doctoral candidates. As a latecomer in the transformation to graduate schools, the German case allows to observe the shift in statu nascendi. The article highlights the distinct role multi-site admission devices play. In both cases, they redistribute agency and excellence through the construction of competitive social fields. Documents, grades, committee deliberations, interviews, and excel files mobilize a social space in which applicants are qualified as acting holistically and competitively against each other in order to identify those most likely of future excellence. Admission is not predefined but the result of a cascade of socio-material fielding practices that purify a comparative social space, qualify applicants competitively, and infuse them with site-specific agency that increasingly authenticates them as field actors. In her article “Towards a Politics of Immediation,” Erin Manning (2019a) writes about the process of “immediation, the withness of time, of body in the making” (p. 1) that bodies subjectivity through the interstitial experience of/in the event. Drawing from Manning’s movement-oriented philosophy, and thinking-with her concepts of immediation, agencement, interval, and memory of the future, I invite alternate visualizations of interviewing as a research method through my study with international graduate students in a TESOL program at a Canadian university. By shifting focus from human-centred researcher intentionality and pre-determined research tools of the interviewing method, to the entangled human and non-human affective agencies of the interview participant-voice-recorder-assemblage, I offer possibilities for experiencing the interview-event as an affective ecological attunement. Manning’s concepts also create interferences with existing institutional and TESOL representations and discourses, where multilingual students are often interpellated into rigid identity constructions and difference is seen as deficiency. We conduct a comprehensive review of embeddedness in entrepreneurship research. Although the term "embeddedness" is frequently used in this field of study, less is known about the ways in which it is operationalized and applied. Using criterion sampling, we analyse 198 articles in order to investigate how embeddedness is conceptualized and what role it plays in the extant entrepreneurship literature. We categorize our findings based on different phases of the entrepreneurial process (early, mature and exit) and outline the dominant focus and the main conceptualization of embeddedness for each phase. We highlight important learnings for each of the three phases and identify potential areas for conceptual development. Across the phases, we find that embeddedness and context are often used interchangeably. We thus call for construct clarity in the field. In the existing literature, entrepreneurs are generally portrayed as reactive to embeddedness, resulting in a loss of entrepreneurial agency. To remedy this, we introduce the term agencement, which takes into account the relationship between the entrepreneurship and embeddedness. Further, entrepreneurs are found to be embedded in multiple contexts at the same time, and embeddedness can be understood at different levels and to different degrees. To address this complexity, it is relevant to focus on the embedding process itself, acknowledging that it takes place in social interactions including cultural, cognitive, and emotional aspects between contexts and across levels. While the extant literature supports the notion that embeddedness is important for understanding entrepreneurship and entrepreneurs, it does not necessarily support our understanding of how embeddedness takes form or why it takes certain forms. The growth of the global video game industry has resulted in an inflow of new entrants who aspire to create novel video games and preferably new video game genres. From an empiricist perspective presented by Gilles Deleuze, a video game is an agencement that materialize on the basis of the relations between the elements included in the game (e.g. computer code, game design ideas, the narrative structure of the game, interface design, etc.). A study of indie video game developers examines how the video game as agencement is composed of technical and narrative elements, and how the subject-formation process of the developer is bound up with the creation of video games. That is, indie video game developers are part of the creative work to develop new digital artefacts that per se are relational and composite in nature, as premised by the concept of agencement. Over a three-year collaborative partnership involving university researchers, government curriculum specialists, and school division teams and educators, this post-qualitative study has engaged a diffractive methodology to research pedagogical change in relationship to a renewed provincial curriculum framework in English Language Arts (ELA). In the data from focus groups, online surveys, and interviews, assessment has emerged as an ethical space of pedagogical, epistemological, and ontological tension and concern. Drawing on research in applied linguistics and digital literacies, and theoretical work in new materialism and Indigenous philosophies in education, a conceptual framework is proposed for emplacing assessment that assumes a relational ontology. Understanding language and literacy practices as produced in and through dynamic social-material-semiotic environments, this article explores how emplacing assessment opens up a dialogue for creating more ethical and responsive relationships in assessment, teaching, and learning. This study explores how Deleuzian concepts of assemblage, affect, and rhizome can inform, and transform, our understanding of how technology shapes second language academic writing. More specifically, it focuses on the practice of L2 academic writing as novice writers compose a source-based research paper in an English for Academic Purposes bridging program. The study followed seven student participants over several weeks as they worked on this assignment. Data-collection instruments included ongoing interviews throughout the writing process, document analysis of written drafts, screencast recordings, and researcher diary. Rhizoanalysis was used to analyze the data and map connections between the elements operating in the student writers' assemblage. Vignettes are presented to problematize conventional reading of data and to turn attention to texts in L2 writing research as asignifying machines. Reading participant data differently allows for exploration of the interconnections between the material, affective, and expressive elements and forces in the digital mediated source-based writing process. For these novice L2 student writers, the elements and forces in their assemblage operate in unique and unpredictable ways, producing unforeseen outcomes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Gentrification is produced and manifested in very diverse ways at different locations and scales. As argued earlier in CITY (Loftus, Alex. 2018. "Planetary Concerns." CITY: Analysis of Urban Trends, Culture, Theory, Policy, Action 22 (1): 88–95), this 'planetary' aspect of gentrification should be seen as an abstract 'point of arrival', grounded in the analysis of real-concrete practices that highlight the production of differentiation. Our study aims to contribute to this debate by focusing on mechanisms and resistances behind the local enactment of 'creative-city' policies. Thus, our two-city study seeks to highlight local differences through the engagement with ideas, framing and practices associated with commercial gentrification. By deploying Callon's concepts of 'diagrams', 'framing' and 'overflowing', we compare how ideas and practices of commercial revitalisation are enacted, stabilised and resisted in two Western European neighbourhoods—Klarendal in Arnhem, The Netherlands, and Reindorf in Vienna, Austria. The study traces how, through local policy and neighbourhood practices, the circulation and translation of global 'creative entrepreneurship' imaginaries result in different framings of the 'creative entrepreneur', with the capacity to somewhat abate the negative social implications of 'creative city' policies. Yet, while in Reindorf this mutation is based on a broader affinity with a social-market perspective, in Klarendal it merely comes from everyday resistance by entrepreneurs and neighbourhood actors. In today's trading of liquid financial instruments, there are two main contending agencements (in Callon's 'actor-network' sense of combinations of humans and nonhuman elements that manifest distributed agency): one agencement yokes together automated high-frequency trading (HFT) and open, anonymous electronic order books; the other is organized above all around the distinction between 'dealers' and 'clients'. Drawing upon interviews with 321 market participants, we examine differences in the relative presence of the two agencements. We focus in this article on the processes that have given rise to especially sharp differences between the trading of shares and of sovereign bonds, and between the trading of the latter in the US and Europe. The article contributes to two literatures: the sociological literature on trading (especially on HFT), which we argue needs expanded to encompass what can be called 'the politics of market structure'; and the nascent political-economy literature on the processes shaping how sovereign bonds are traded. In terms of underlying theory, we advocate far greater attention in actor-network economic sociology to the state and its agencies and a stronger focus in political economy on materiality. This article considers the application of the New Materialisms within archaeology, primarily in response to Witmore's influential discussion article: Archaeology and the New Materialisms (2014), specifically his emphasis on things. This, the authors demonstrate, is peripheral to the main thrust of the New Materialisms discourse. They unravel complexities in the terminology and consider the etymological and epistemological framework of concepts such as matter and thing. This leads them to consider some important issues that arise applying Deleuzian assemblages to the archaeological record and the potential of employing Barad's agential realist theory instead. Barad's concept of phenomena moves beyond the notion of things as separate, bounded entities, emphasizing entanglements of matter and illustrates how matter (including humans) co-create the material world. This text is a heuristic account of the many arrangements (or agencements) of the literary experience through the debate over the aesthetic exceptionality and the position of the subject in artistic experience. It starts by discussing how the concept of subject guided the different aesthetic approaches in literary and aesthetic theory, turning art into some sort of fatiche which incorporates itself into the Western metaphysics that allegedly works as a static reference for the thinking of the world in which we live in. Then, after redefining the role of the subject in the aesthetic experience, the paper tries to present works of art as objects that speculate and experiment with the immanence. Thus, the exceptionality of the aesthetics lies in its completely original position regarding the potentially infinite ways of making words (cosmovisions) by means of literary agencements. Finally, the article ends with a reflection on the arrangements or agencements within immanence itself, shedding light on how literature connects itself with this kind of experience. This paper reports the findings of a qualitative narrative-inquiry study aimed at exploring what English as a Foreign Language (EFL) student-teachers' life stories revealed about their identity construction as future teachers. The project was carried out with eighth-semester student-teachers from a public university in Tunja, Boyacá (Colombia). Hence, the data collection drew upon written life stories and in-depth interviews. The findings suggest that critical factors helped student-teachers construct their identities as future EFL teachers. These factors are all tied to the student-teachers' previous experiences as language learners themselves, a connection and affiliation they established with their teacher-educators as projected images they have of themselves as future teachers. Moreover, real teaching experiences were opportunities for student-teachers to make sense of the myriad of issues in education, which made them develop positions towards education as future teachers. The proliferation of digital devices in educational settings has contributed to the decentralization of knowledge from teachers and established textbooks to fluid online personalized resources, and from blackboards as spaces of materialization of this knowledge to personal screens. In this new constellation, school practices such as reading, writing and note-taking take new forms. How are these practices reconfigured when centered around mobile digital devices? In this paper, we investigate routine lesson practices of a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) school by means of an ethnographic observation. Adopting the term agencement as a heuristic device, we explore what practices are being constituted and how they are always in connection with one another. Moreover, we show that by practicing they produce different forms of action. We argue that in such a hybrid constellation, tasks find a different status beyond isolated and self-contained units for enhancing learning in different lessons. We introduce task-agencement, through which the task always entails a process of taskification that formats BYOD schools. With taskification, we mean that the task-agencement expands the domain in which tasks not only influence the organization and structure of lessons, but equally the very organization of the BYOD school by enacting a particular form of schooling. Finally, we propose a taskified form as a form of BYOD schooling that templates and formats how practices such as reading and writing, contextualization and introduction of the lesson are conducted. Following Portugal's return of Macau to the People's Republic of China in 1999, and the subsequent liberalization of the city's 150-year-old casino monopoly, Macau was transformed into the world's most lucrative site of casino gaming. Today Macau attracts more than 30 million annual tourists, the majority of whom are from mainland China. This article analyzes an electronic casino game called LIVE Baccarat, which was created by a Hong Kong biopharmaceutical company, and designed to appeal to Chinese gamblers in Macau. Drawing on the work of Michel Callon and Michel Foucault, I explore the ways in which the LIVE Baccarat gaming machine 'economizes' the game of baccarat by introducing novel betting functions which require gamblers to engage in various forms of financial calculation, including calqulation, hedging, arbitrage, and portfolio management. LIVE Baccarat is a biopolitical apparatus of subjection of a post-socialist Chinese homo economicus, a form of 'human capital' which Foucault might call an 'entrepreneur of the self.' This subject not only plays a remunerative role in Macau's gaming industry, but conforms to China's macroeconomic goals to engender 'quality' citizens equipped to support a domestic consumer market which may supplant the unsustainable production-for-export regime that drove the country's initial post-reform development. In recent years, the sharing economy (SE) has attracted considerable attention, both scholarly and popular, relating to its capacity to enforce or undermine extant economic conventions. However, the process through which technological developments can effectively have this outcome of altering extant conventions on what is morally acceptable or desirable is still unclear. In this paper, we draw on the work of Boltanski and Thévenot (On justification: economies of worth. Princeton University Press, Princeton, 2006) and the notion of agencement to investigate the moral and performative dimension of controversies related to the SE. The research stems from a qualitative case-based study of the controversy following Uber's implementation in Montréal's taxi market. We contribute to the literature on the SE through an empirical study of the moral debates entailed in the unfolding in situ of a SE device. We also add to the literature using the 'Orders of Worth' framework (2006) by showing how a compromise is solidified. We find that beyond discursive strategies, it is the concrete recomposition of laws, conventions, devices, persons, etc. that harmonised different definitions of the common good. Finally, we contribute to the literature on the relationship between technology, ethics, and social change by capturing the specific values that legitimise Uber, and by following their unfolding throughout a controversy. The article is twofold in its approach. The first section purports to circumvent the generally all too global readings of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness, by approaching it via the medium of fiction. Four tales inspired by the novella are briefly examined, in quest of a never-to-be found « agencement », linking a river, a big man and a missing people. The second section investigates how a river is fabricated in the workshop of the writer, whose knowhow is explicitly compared to that of a mechanic, of a welder of rivets. Along the way, successive modalities of the forging of a river are presented, from various types of embedding (narrative, biographical, fictional) to the « agencement » (Deleuze’s concept) of the living, to the philology of the rivet and to abstract painting, which stages the finally thwarted attempt to destroy a river by the means of writing.

This commentary springs from insights gleaned from two sources. The first involves my archaeological research into the ancient pilgrimage center of Chaco Canyon, New Mexico; the second includes lessons learned by walking the medieval Camino de Santiago. The four papers in this volume describe enchanting destinations reached by archaeological pilgrims engaged in ambulatory knowing. I frame my discussion of these papers using DeLeuzean concepts of assemblage/agencement, emphasizing the emergent properties of pilgrimage, and underscoring how archaeologists can study pilgrims in motion. This article explores the sustainability initiatives undertaken in a non-certified market involving an indigenous Southern firm and smallholder coffee farmers in Uganda. In response to recent calls, we take a performative approach to sustainability and employ an agencing lens to ask the question: how are sustainable coffee farmers constituted in concrete situations, and what role do they play in co-constructing sustainability? The ethnographic study undertaken reveals the proactive and interactive participation of farmers in co-constructing sustainability. Also unveiled, are the continuous and iteratively emergent agencing processes involving firms, farmers, and market devices, which collectively create variably-agenced sustainable farmers who perform diverse versions of sustainability.
