2. Variability of piglets adaptability at weaning in organic farming system

In organic farming, weaning piglets remains a critical period, although later than in the conventional system. The use of hormones being forbidden in organic system, heat synchronization is absent, which leads to spread of birth associated with heterogeneous ages, weight and health status of the piglets. The differences can be accentuated by a poorly adapted solid diet before and after weaning. The aim of the study was to understand the difference involved in the physiological mechanisms in piglet adaptation strategies to propose adapted feeding strategies. The studied population of fifty piglets, from four genetic lines, comes from 5 sows (Landrace x Duroc) of the INRA-Genesi unit and a boar (Pietrain x Large White). Five batches, of ten pigs per sow, were constituted by weight range: four “large” piglets, two "medium" and four "small". They had access to a second-age feed from ten days and to roughage, high protein, after weaning (Wrapped alfalfa). Animals weights were recorded on days (d) 1-10-21-28 42-48-55-62. Blood samples were collected at d 42-48-55-62 for inflammatory indicators and oxidative stress measurements around weaning. Behavioural observations in farrowing room at d 15-20-30-40 and at post-weaning at d 43, were carried out to establish weaning adaptation profiles. The results showed that the small piglets at d 42 were on the posterior teats and that there was no clear indication if the piglets ate more solid feed in the farrowing room compared to the larger piglets. At post-weaning, it was shown that the small piglets were on average more present in the area of feeding interest than the larger ones. The smaller piglets also had a higher haptoglobin rate than the large and medium piglets. Finally, there was no weight compensation from the smaller piglets compared to the mediums and larger piglets. The average weight significantly differs between all three categories at d 42 and d70.

Feed-a-Gene is a so-called multi-actor project, which means that the project ‘...needs to take into account that theobjectives and planning are targeted to the needs, problems, and opportunities of end-users, and complementarity with existing research’. Partners from different sectors participate in the project, but we also need feedback from stakeholders about their expectations and on how project outcomes can be put into practice. What can and should we deliver to the livestock production sector and to society at large? The morning discussion deals with the following workpackages of the Feed-a-Gene project: (1) WP2: New animal traits for innovative feeding and breeding strategies; and (2) WP5: Use of traits in animal selection: genetic parameter estimations, genetic model developments, and evaluation of breeding schemes.

Summary of the multidisciplinary assesment; Do animals experience emotions? Think? Have a life story? Since antiquity, philosophers have contrasting answers to those questions. From the Nineteenth century onwards, thoughts on the nature of animals were enriched by scientific insights from evolutionary theory, ethology, neurophysiology and cognitive sciences. Meanwhile, animal consciousness remains controversial within the scientific community. In 2012, a group of leading scientists felt the need to publish a manifesto entitled the “Cambridge Declaration on Consciousness” it states that “convergent evidence indicates that nonhuman animals have the neuroanatomical, neurochemical, and neurophysiological substrates of conscious states along with the capacity to exhibit intentional behaviours”.Current knowledge, including the outcome of this multidisciplinary scientific assessment, shows that animals possess a wide range of cognitive abilities associated with behaviours of varying complexity. The forms of consciousness observed in humans presuppose distinct cognitive abilities which are found in certain animals. Could it be concluded that animals possess some sort of consciousness similar, albeit not identical, to that of humans?Research on levels and contents of consciousness in animals is emerging as a scientific topic of major interest due to its high level of complexity and associated controversies. Current scientific advances invite us to revisit ethical considerations regarding the relationships between humans and animals (domestic animals in particular).

Rapport de l'expertise scientifique collective; Les animaux peuvent-ils éprouver des émotions, peuvent-ils penser, ont-ils une histoire de vie ? Depuis l’Antiquité, les philosophes ont proposé des réponses contrastées à ces questions. Du XIXème siècle à nos jours, la réflexion sur ce que sont les animaux s’est enrichie d’apports scientifiques : théorie de l’évolution, éthologie, neurophysiologie, sciences cognitives. Mais la conscience animale reste toujours l’objet de débats importants dans la communauté scientifique. Ainsi en 2012 un groupe de scientifiques de premier plan a éprouvé la nécessité de publier un manifeste intitulé « Déclaration de Cambridge sur la Conscience », qui énonce qu’«…une convergence de preuves indique que les animaux non humains disposent des substrats neuro-anatomiques, neurochimiques et neurophysiologiques des états conscients ainsi que la capacité d’exprimer des comportements intentionnels...».Les connaissances actuelles, dont cette expertise collective propose une synthèse, montrent que les animaux possèdent un large éventail de capacités cognitives associées à des comportements plus ou moins complexes. Les formes de conscience étudiées chez les humains supposent des capacités cognitives distinctes que l’on retrouve chez certains animaux. Peut-on en postuler que ceux-ci ont des formes de consciences équivalentes à celles de l’homme, sans être forcément identiques ?L’étude des niveaux et des contenus de la conscience chez les animaux est en passe de devenir un enjeu scientifique important en raison de la complexité du sujet et des controverses qu’il ne manquera pas de susciter. Enfin, les acquis scientifiques dans ce domaine invitent à reprendre les réflexions morales concernant les relations que les hommes entretiennent avec les animaux (et particulièrement avec les animaux domestiques)

After reviewing the literature on current knowledge about consciousness in humans, we present a state-of-the art discussion on consciousness and related key concepts in animals. Obviously much fewer publications are available on non-human species than on humans, most of them relating to laboratory or wild animal species, and only few to livestock species. Human consciousness is by definition subjective and private. Animal consciousness is usually assessed through behavioural performance. Behaviour involves a wide array of cognitive processes that have to be assessed separately using specific experimental protocols. Accordingly, several processes indicative of the presence of consciousness are discussed: perception and cognition, awareness of the bodily-self, self-related knowledge of the environment (including social environment). When available, specific examples are given in livestock species. Next, we review the existing evidence regarding neuronal correlates of consciousness, and emphasize the difficulty of linking aspects of consciousness to specific neural structures across the phyla because high-level cognitive abilities may have evolved independently along evolution. Several mammalian brain structures (cortex and midbrain) are involved in the manifestations of consciousness, while the equivalent functional structures for birds and fishes would likely be the pallium/tectum and midbrain. Caution is required before excluding consciousness in species not having the same brain structures as the mammalian ones as different neural architectures may mediate comparable processes. Finally, specific neurophysiological mechanisms appear to be strongly linked to the emergence of consciousness, namely neural synchrony and neural feedback. Considering the limited amount of data available and the few animal species studied so far, we conclude that different manifestations of consciousness can be observed in animals but that further refinement is still needed to characterize their level and content in each species. Further research is required to clarify these issues, especially in livestock species.

The Feed-a-Gene project aims to better adapt different components of monogastric livestock production systems (i.e. pigs, poultry and rabbits) to improve the overall efficiency and to reduce the environmental impact. This involves the development of new and alternative feed resources and feed technologies, the identification and selection of robust animals that are better adapted to fluctuating conditions, and the development of feeding techniques that allow optimizing the potential of the feed and the animal. The project started on March 1st 2015 for a 5 year period and has been awarded a grant from the European Commission (Grant agreement no: 633531) under the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020. The project will: (1) Develop new and alternative feeds and feed technologies to make better use of local feed resources, green biomass and by-products of the food and biofuel industry; (2) Develop methods for the real-time characterization of the nutritional value of feeds to better use and adapt diets to animal requirements; (3) Develop new traits of feed efficiency and robustness allowing identification of individual variability to select animals that are more adapted to changes in feed and environmental conditions; (4) Develop biological models of livestock functioning to better understand and predict nutrient and energy utilization of animals along their productive trajectory; (5) Develop new management systems for precision feeding and precision farming combining data and knowledge from the feed, the animal, and the environment using innovative monitoring systems, feeders, and decision support tools; (6) Evaluate the overall sustainability of new management systems developed by the project; (7) Demonstrate the innovative technologies developed by the project in collaboration with partners from the feed industry, breeding companies, equipment manufacturers, and farmers’ organizations to promote the practical implementation of project results; (8) Disseminate new technologies that will increase animal production efficiency, whilst maintaining product quality and animal welfare and enhance EU food security to relevant stakeholders. Postgrazing sward height (PGSH) can be altered to adjust the allowance of grass in the dairy cow's diet. This study aimed to investigate the short-term dairy cow response to a change in postgrazing height in early lactation. Ninety Holstein Friesian spring-calving cows were randomly assigned across 3 postgrazing height treatments (n=30): 2.7cm (severe), 3.5cm (low), and 4.2cm (moderate) from February 14 to April 24, 2011. From April 25, animals were rerandomized within each treatment to graze across 2 postgrazing heights: 3.5cm (low) or 4.5cm (high). Animal production measurements were taken from April 4 to 24 (measurement period 1; M1) and from April 25 to May 15 (measurement period 2; M2). The 6 treatments (n=15) of M2 were severe-low, severe-high, low-low, low-high, moderate-low, and moderate-high. During M1, increasing postgrazing height from severe to low to moderate linearly increased daily milk yield (21.5, 24.6 and 25.8kg/cow per day) and grass dry matter intake (GDMI; 13.2, 14.9, and 15.8kg of DM/cow per day). Milk solids yield was reduced in the severe (−1,518g/cow per day) treatment when compared with the low and moderate cows (1,866g/cow per day, on average). The milk yield (MY) response to change in PGSH between M1 and M2 (V M1−M2 ) was established using V M1−M2 MY=−1.27−1.89 × PGSH M1 + 1.51 × PGSH M2 (R 2 =0.64). The MY response associated with each treatment between M1 and M2 (3 wk) were −1.03kg/cow for severe-low, 0.68kg/cow for severe-high, −2.56kg/cow for low-low, −1.11kg/cow for low-high, −4.17kg/cow for moderate-low, and −2.39kg/cow for moderate-high. The large increase in energy intake in severe-high between M1 and M2 was achieved through higher GDMI per minute and GDMI per bite, which supported the positive change in MY. Treatments low-high, moderate-low, and moderate-high recorded the highest overall cumulative milk yield (74kg of milk solids/cow) over the 6-wk period, whereas severe-low and severe-high had the lowest (65kg of MS/cow). From the animal responses observed in the present study, imposing a postgrazing height of 3.5cm in early spring provides the opportunity to increase postgrazing height thereafter; the cow increases GDMI accordingly and converts the additional energy intake into milk output. The equations established in this paper provide a decision tool for dairy farmers to anticipate the animal response when postgrazing height is altered or maintained around the tenth week of lactation.

The major challenge of animal phenotyping is to acquire systemic knowledge of farm animal robustness. This will allow responding to a double objective in terms of exploiting the variability of animal aptitudes: selection for major objectives in order to improve efficiency and robustness of genotypes and precision farming that exploits individual variability of animals for an improved resilience on the herd level or to improve the management for a specific genotype. Two major challenges of our knowledge exist which are interdependent and common to all animal breeding, and which must be met in order to improve animal robustness. The first is understanding andpredicting the compromise amongst vital functions. By this we mean understanding how priority changes are made under specific limited resources. The second is understanding and exploiting the temporal aspects of robustness during an animal’s life in order to allow the animal to maintain its level of performance under different environments without compromising its reproduction, health or welfare. Attaining these objectives requires accomplishing the following: i) defining complex phenotypes through the integration of data obtained on the molecular or tissular scales of an animal or of one of its functions; ii) developing high-throughput technologiesto characterize at a lower cost and the most precisely as possible the largest number of animals; iii) developing important data bases and reliable methods and computing tools necessary for the treatment of information for modeling and predictive biology., L’enjeu majeur du phénotypage animal est d’acquérir une connaissance systémique de la robustesse des animaux d’élevage pour répondre au mieux à une double finalité en termes d’exploitation de la variabilité des aptitudes animales : une sélection éclairée vers des objectifs majeurs pour améliorer l’efficience et la robustesse des génotypes, et un élevage de précision exploitant la variabilité individuelle des animaux pour gagner en résilience à l’échelle du troupeau, ou pour améliorer la conduite à génotype donné. Deux défis majeurs de connaissance, interdépendants et communs à toutes les filières animales, sont à relever pour améliorer la robustesse des animaux : i) comprendre et prédire les compromis entre fonctions vitales, c’est-à-dire les changements de priorités dans l’allocation de ressources limitées ; ii) comprendre et exploiter les aspects temporels de la robustesse au cours de la vie de l’animal pour lui permettre de maintenir son niveau de production dans une large gamme d’environnements sans pour autant compromettre sa reproduction, sa santé et son bien-être. Atteindre ces objectifs nécessite de lever les verrous techniques suivants : i) définir des phénotypes complexes à partir de l’intégration de données obtenues à différentes échelles moléculaires, tissulaires, de l’animal ou d’une de ses fonctions ; ii) mettre en oeuvre des technologies à haut débit pour caractériser à moindre coût et le plus précisément possible le plus grand nombre d’animaux ; iii) développer d’importantes bases de données, des méthodes et outils informatiques performants, nécessaires aux traitements des informations à des fins de modélisation et de biologie prédictive.

Replacing aquaculture feeds based on fisheries-derived resources with plant-based diets could be a relevant strategy to improve the sustainability of aquaculture. Recent studies on sea bass have shown that the total and early replacement of marine products by plant products would have a moderate effect on fish growth and body lipid content. Whether a plant-based diet impacts behavioural and physiological traits possibly linked to fish welfare, is not known, however. Here, we studied the effect of a totally plant-based diet introduced at an early stage of sea bass development on self-feeding behaviour, learning ability in a T-maze and stress biomarkers. We first compared learning processes in self-feeding conditions, between naive fish fed a plant-based diet (PBF) and fish fed a classic marine diet (MF). Then, we tested fish individually in a T-maze to compare the two feed groups for swimming activity, exploration and the ability to learn to discriminate between two two-dimensional objects associated with a reward. Blood physiological variables, including stress indicators (cortisol and glucose concentrations), were also determined. We did not find any indications of differences in self-feeding behaviour between PBF and MF in the first 30 days. A second experiment showed similar swimming activities in both fish categories. The "no-choice" percentage was high in both fish categories (similar to 60%), but all the fish moved preferentially toward the reward. Their first turns indicated an ability to discriminate between two two-dimensional objects to complete a simple task. However, the high percentage of "no-choice" responses in both fish categories could have rendered the results non significant. The T-maze test procedure induced the production of high concentrations of cortisol, indicating acute stress in fish of both groups during testing. Plasma cortisol concentration was higher in MF than PBF, suggesting that the plant-based diet may affect the short-term release of cortisol. This study provides the first insight into the impact of a plant-based diet on sea bass behavioural traits, and confirms the effect of this diet on cortisol release in response to stress. Overall, in this first experiment, we did not find any major impact of a plant-based diet on sea bass behavioural traits, which is an interesting point for the development potential of such a sustainable aquaculture strategy.

The Feed-a-Gene project aims to better adapt different components of monogastric livestock production systems (i.e. pigs, poultry and rabbits) to improve the overall efficiency and to reduce the environmental impact. This involves the development of new and alternative feed resources and feed technologies, the identification and selection of robust animals that are better adapted to fluctuating conditions, and the development of feeding techniques that allow optimizing the potential of the feed and the animal. The project started on March 1st 2015 for a 5 year period and has been awarded a grant from the European Commission (Grant agreement no: 633531) under the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation Horizon 2020. The project will: (1) Develop new and alternative feeds and feed technologies to make better use of local feed resources, green biomass and by-products of the food and biofuel industry; (2) Develop methods for the real-time characterization of the nutritional value of feeds to better use and adapt diets to animal requirements; (3) Develop new traits of feed efficiency and robustness allowing identification of individual variability to select animals that are more adapted to changes in feed and environmental conditions; (4) Develop biological models of livestock functioning to better understand and predict nutrient and energy utilization of animals along their productive trajectory; (5) Develop new management systems for precision feeding and precision farming combining data and knowledge from the feed, the animal, and the environment using innovative monitoring systems, feeders, and decision support tools; (6) Evaluate the overall sustainability of new management systems developed by the project; (7) Demonstrate the innovative technologies developed by the projectin collaboration with partners from the feed industry, breeding companies, equipment manufacturers, and farmers’ organizations to promote the practical implementation of project results; (8) Disseminate new technologies that will increase animal production efficiency, whilst maintaining product quality and animal welfare and enhance EU food security to relevant stakeholders.
