The influence of light spectral properties on circadian rhythms is of substantial interest to laboratory-based investigation of the circadian system and to field-based understanding of the effects of artificial light at night. The trade-offs between intensity and spectrum regarding masking behaviors are largely unknown, even for well-studied organisms. We used a custom LED illumination system to document the response of wild-type house mice (Mus musculus) to 1-h nocturnal exposure of all combinations of four intensity levels (0.01, 0.5, 5 and 50 lx) and three correlated color temperatures (CCT; 1750, 1950 and 3000 K). Higher intensities of light (50 lx) suppressed cage activity substantially, and consistently more for the higher CCT light (91% for 3000 K, 53% for 1750 K). At the lowest intensity (0.01 lx), mean activity was increased, with the greatest increases for the lowest CCT (12.3% increase at 1750 K, 3% increase at 3000 K). Multiple linear regression confirmed the influence of both CCT and intensity on changes in activity, with the scaled effect size of intensity 3.6 times greater than that of CCT. Activity suppression was significantly lower for male than for female mice. Assessment of light-evoked cFos expression in the suprachiasmatic nucleus at 50 lx showed no significant difference between high and low CCT exposure. The significant differences by spectral composition illustrate a need to account for light spectrum in circadian studies of behavior, and confirm that spectral controls can mitigate some, but certainly not all, of the effects of light pollution on species in the wild.

Dehydration and tomato spotted wilt virus (TSWV) infection substantially impact the feeding of western flower thrips, Frankliniella occidentalis. Until now, the dynamics between these biotic and abiotic stresses have not been examined for thrips. Here, we report water balance characteristics and changes in other biological parameters during infection with TSWV for the western flower thrips. There were no apparent differences in water balance parameters during TSWV infection of male or female thrips. Our results show that, although water balance characteristics of western flower thrips are minimally impacted by TSWV infection, the increase in feeding and activity when dehydration and TSWV are combined suggests that virus transmission could be increased under periods of drought. Importantly, survival and progeny generation were impaired during TSWV infection and dehydration bouts. The negative impact on survival and reproduction suggests that the interactions between TSWV infection and dehydration will likely reduce thrips populations. The opposite effects of dehydration on feeding/activity and survival/reproduction for virus infected thrips suggest the impact of vectorial capacity will likely be minor for TSWV transmission. As water stress significantly impacts insect-plant-virus dynamics, these studies highlight that all interactions and effects need to be measured to understand thrips-TSWV interactions in their role as viral vector to plants.

Accelerated by technological advancements, while online platforms equipped with recommendation algorithms offer convenience to obtain information, it also brought algorithm bias, shaping the norms and behaviors of their users. The filter bubble, conceived as a negative consequence of algorithm bias, means the reduction of the diversity of users' information consumption, garnering extensive attention. Previous research on filter bubbles typically used users' self-reported or behavioral data independently. However, existing studies have disputed whether filter bubbles exist on the platform, possibly owing to variations in measurement methods. In our study, we took content category diversity to measure the filter bubbles and innovatively used a combination of participants' self-reported and website behavioral data, examining filter bubbles on a single online video platform (Bilibili). We conducted a questionnaire survey among 337 college students and collected 3,22,324 browsing records with their informed authorization, constituting the dataset for research analysis. The existence of filter bubbles on Bilibli is found, such that diversity will decrease when viewing Game videos increases. Furthermore, we considered the factors that influence filter bubbles from the perspective of demographics and user behavior. In demographics, female and non-member users are more likely to be trapped in filter bubbles. In user behavior, results of feature importance analysis indicate that the diversity of information consumption of heavy users is higher than others, and both activity and fragmentation have an impact on the formation of filter bubbles, but in different directions. Finally, we discuss the reasons for these results and a theoretical explanation that the filter bubbles effect may be lower than we thought for both heavy and normal users on online platforms. BackgroundMethodResultsInterpretationMuch of the childhood stroke literature has not distinguished impacts for adolescents from those of younger children. Research has also focused on body impairments. With adolescence being a unique period, this scoping review aimed to identify the impacts of childhood stroke on activity, participation, and quality of life for adolescents 13–18 years, and identify how these impacts were determined.This review adhered to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR). Data pertaining to non-impairment impacts of childhood stroke for adolescents, participant and study characteristics, and measurement instruments were extracted.Following screening, 79 articles were included, and 33 measurement instruments identified. Only 6 studies reported separate data for adolescents, identifying difficulties with daily activities, social and academic impacts, and reduced quality of life. Impacts of post-stroke communication difficulties on daily activities and schooling were also noted. Measurement instruments developed specifically for adolescents with stroke are lacking.The review identified limited research reporting non-impairment impacts of childhood stroke for adolescents. Further research specific to this population and the development of measurement instruments for adolescents who have experienced childhood stroke is required to support future research and clinicians working with this population. Fish domestication progresses through five levels: from the initial acclimatization to captivity (Level 1), to the life cycle completion in captivity (Level 4), and even to the implementation of selective breeding programs (Level 5). Domestication leads to phenotypic changes over generations, sometimes from the very first generation. Behavioral traits are among the first to change. However, in fish, potential behavioral changes during early domestication have been little studied. Therefore, we studied potential behavioral changes among early and advanced levels of domestication in a model species, the zebrafish (Danio rerio), using a mirror test experiment, commonly used to assess traits involved in activity, aggressiveness, and stress in this species. We compared these traits between wild zebrafish in captivity (F0; Level 1), the first generation of their captive-born offspring (F1; Level 4), and three laboratory strains (AB, TU, and WIK; Level 5). Each fish was individually filmed and tracked using an automated procedure for 5 min. Nine behavioral traits and one activity-related trait were characterized for each individual based on the movements and positioning of the fish. We applied a principal component analysis (PCA) and tested the significance of potential differences between groups using an analysis of similarities (ANOSIM). We applied an indicator value analysis (IndVal) to determine which traits were most expressed by each group. We detected differences between groups and across domestication levels. More specifically, we highlighted differentiations between different levels of domestication (e.g. between F1, AB, TU, and WIK) as early as the beginning of the domestication process (i.e. F0 vs. F1), but also within the same level of domestication (i.e. AB vs. TU). Based on PCA and IndVal, (i) F0 and F1 tended to show stronger expression of stress-related traits than the other groups, (ii) F0 was more active than others, and (iii) TU was more aggressive than AB. Our results confirmed that domestication can change fish behavior, even in the first generation born in captivity, although these modifications remain limited. In contrast, we did not observe any general trends correlated with domestication levels, given that AB and TU diverged in their aggressiveness levels, and WIK differed only from F1. This result needs to be generalized to other species but also considered for domestication for aquaculture. If future studies confirm that the changes observed at the beginning of the domestication process remain limited and that there is no consistent evolutionary trend across generations in fish, this would highlight the crucial importance of selecting the right species from the outset of domestication. It would also emphasize the need to design selective breeding programs that shape fish stocks with the most desirable characteristics. To our knowledge, this study is one of the few to examine the behavior of wild zebrafish alongside laboratory strains, offering a unique insight into the early stages of domestication. Regulated cell death, including pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis, is vital for the body’s defense system. Recent research suggests that these three types of cell death are interconnected, giving rise to a new concept called PANoptosis. PANoptosis has been linked to various diseases, making it crucial to comprehend its mechanism for effective treatments. PANoptosis is controlled by upstream receptors and molecular signals, which form polymeric complexes known as PANoptosomes. Cell death combines necroptosis, apoptosis, and pyroptosis and cannot be fully explained by any of these processes alone. Understanding pyroptosis, apoptosis, and necroptosis is essential for understanding PANoptosis. Physical exercise has been shown to suppress pyroptotic, apoptotic, and necroptotic signaling pathways by reducing inflammatory factors, proapoptotic factors, and necroptotic factors such as caspases and TNF-alpha. This ultimately leads to a decrease in cardiac structural remodeling. With the proceeding of global warming and water eutrophication, the phenomenon of green tide has garnered significant societal interest. Consequently, researchers had increasingly focused on the potential applications of green algae biomass, particularly its polysaccharides. The polysaccharide serves as the primary active constituent of green algae and has demonstrated numerous advantageous biological activities, including antioxidant, antiviral, anticoagulant, hypolipidemic and immuno-modulatory activities. The favorable bioavailability and solubility of green algae oligosaccharides are attributed to their low molecular weight. So there has been a growing interest in researching green algae polysaccharides and oligosaccharides for the utilization of marine biological resources. This review summarized the extraction, purification, chemical structure, composition, biological activity, and potential applications prospect of polysaccharides and oligosaccharides derived from green algae. Objectives To introduce and evaluate a simple method for assessing joint inflammation and structural damage on whole-body MRI (WBMRI) in juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), which is usable in clinical practice. Methods The proposed system utilizes post-contrast Dixon WBMRI scans. Joints are assessed for synovitis (grade 0–2) and structural damage (present/absent) at 81 sites. The synovitis grading is based on features including above-normal intensity synovial enhancement, synovial hypertrophy, joint effusion, subarticular bone marrow oedema and peri-articular soft tissue oedema. This system was evaluated in a prospective study of 60 young people (47 patients with JIA and 13 controls with non-inflammatory musculoskeletal pain) who underwent a WBMRI. Three readers (blinded to diagnosis) independently reviewed all images and re-reviewed 20 individual scans. The intra- and inter-reader overall agreement (OA) and the intra- and inter-reader Gwet's agreement coefficients 2 (GAC2) were measured for the detection of a) participants with ≥1 joint with inflammation or structural damage and b) joint inflammation or structural damage for each joint. Results The inter-reader OA for detecting patients with ≥1 joint with inflammation, defined as grade 2 synovitis (G2), and ≥1 joint with structural damage were 80% and 73%, respectively. The intra-reader OA for readers 1–3 was 80–90% and 75–90%, respectively. The inter-reader OA and GAC2 for joint inflammation (G2) at each joint were both ≥85% for all joints but were lower if grade 1 synovitis was included as positive. Conclusion The intra- and inter-reader agreements of this WBMRI assessment system are adequate for assessing objective joint inflammation and damage in JIA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: This study aimed to investigate the differential expression levels of the cGAS-STING pathway in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of spinal tuberculosis (TB) patients with different progression and its feasibility as a diagnostic marker. Methods: Peripheral blood and medical records of 25 patients with spinal TB and 10 healthy individuals, were prospectively collected and analyzed. PBMCs and serum were extracted from peripheral blood and the expression levels of the cGAS-STING pathway in PBMCs were measured by real-time PCR (RT-PCR) and serum interferon β (IFN-β) expression levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The expression of Interferon regulatory Factor 3 (IRF3) in PBMCs was measured using western blot. Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSS 26.0 statistical package. Results: The results showed that the expression level of the TANK-binding kinase 1 (TBK1) and IRF3 was significantly higher in PBMCs (P < 0.05), in patients with active lesions than in patients with stable lesions. The serum concentration of IFN-β was significantly higher in patients with active lesions (P = 0.028). Compared with healthy individuals, the expression level of the cGAS-STING pathway was elevated in PBMCs of TB patients (P < 0.05), and the difference in the expression level of IFN-β was not statistically significant (P > 0.05), and the serum IFN-β concentration was elevated (P < 0.05). The calculated AUC values for TBK1 and IRF3 in PBMCs, IFN-β in serum and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) to distinguish between patients with active and stable lesions were 0.732, 0.714, 0.839, and 0.714 respectively. Conclusions: The expression level of TBK1 and IRF3 in PBMCs, and IFN-β in the serum of patients with spinal TB is positively correlated with disease activity. Negative attitudes/beliefs surrounding osteoarthritis, pain, and activity contribute to reduced physical activity in people with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). These attitudes/beliefs are assessed using self-report questionnaires, relying on information one is consciously aware of and willing to disclose. Automatic (ie, implicit) assessment of attitudes does not rely on conscious reflection and may identify features unique from self-report. We developed an implicit association test that explored associations between images of a person moving/twisting their knee (activity) or sitting/standing (rest), and perceived threat (safe vs dangerous). We hypothesised that people with KOA would have greater implicit threat-activity associations (vs pain-free and non-knee pain controls), with implicit attitudes only weakly correlating with self-reported measures (pain knowledge, osteoarthritis/pain/activity beliefs, fear of movement). Participants (n = 558) completed an online survey: 223 had painful KOA(n = 157 female, 64.5 ± 8.9 years); 207 were pain free (n = 157 female, 49.3 ± 15.3 years); and 99 had non-KOA lower limb pain (n = 74 female, 47.5 ± 15.04 years). An implicit association between "danger" and "activity" was present in those with and without limb pain (KOA: 0.36,95% CI 0.28-0.44; pain free: 0.13,95% CI 0.04-0.22; non-KOA lower limb pain 0.11, 95% CI -0.03 to 0.24) but was significantly greater in the KOA group than in the pain free (P < 0.001) and non-KOA lower limb pain (P = 0.004) groups. Correlations between implicit and self-reported measures were nonsignificant or weak (rho = -0.29 to 0.19, P < 0.001 to P = 0.767). People with painful KOA hold heightened implicit threat-activity associations, capturing information unique to that from self-report questionnaires. Emerging active regions are associated with convective flows on the spatial scale and lifetimes of supergranules. To understand how these flows are involved in the formation of active regions, we aim to identify where active regions emerge in the supergranulation flow pattern. We computed supergranulation scale flow maps at the surface for all active regions in the Solar Dynamics Observatory Helioseismic Emerging Active Region Survey. We classified each of the active regions into four bins based on the amplitude of their average surface flow divergence at emergence. We then averaged the flow divergence over the active regions in each bin as a function of time. We also considered a corresponding set of control regions. We found that, on average, the flow divergence increases during the day prior to emergence at a rate independent of the amount of flux that emerges. By subtracting the averaged flow divergence of the control regions, we found that active region emergence is associated with a remaining converging flow at 0.5–1 d prior to emergence. This remnant flow, |$\Delta \, \mathrm{div} \, \boldsymbol {v}_{\rm h} = (-4.9 \pm 1.7) \times 10^{-6}\,{\rm s}^{-1}$|⁠ , corresponds to a flow speed of 10–20 m s−1 (an order of magnitude less than supergranulation flows) out to a radius of about 10 Mm. We show that these observational results are qualitatively supported by simulations of a small bipole emerging through the near-surface convective layers of the Sun. Rationale Clinical research has shown that prenatal exposure to nicotine may result in increased obesity risk later in life. Preclinical research has corroborated this finding, but few studies have investigated inhaled nicotine or the interaction with diet on obesity risk. Objective The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of prenatal nicotine exposure on both direct and indirect obesity measures, with both sex and diet as factors. Methods Pregnant rats were exposed to either vehicle or nicotine vapor (24 mg/mL or 59 mg/mL) throughout the entire gestational period. Offspring from each treatment group were given either a normal diet or a high fat diet starting at postnatal day 22. Caloric intake, body weight, spontaneous locomotion, sleep/wake activity, and voluntary exercise were measured throughout adolescence. Pregnancy weight gain and pup birthweights were collected to further measure developmental effects of prenatal nicotine exposure. Results Both maternal weight gain during pregnancy and pup weight at birth were decreased with prenatal nicotine exposure. Early adolescent males showed increased spontaneous activity in the open field following prenatal nicotine exposure compared to vehicle counterparts, particularly those given high-fat diet. Additionally, high dose nicotine prenatal treated males ran significantly less distance on the running wheel in late adolescence compared to vehicle counterparts, in the normal diet group only. Conclusion The results presented here show decreased birthweight, hyperactivity, and decreased voluntary exercise in adolescence following prenatal nicotine exposure in dose, sex, and diet dependent manners, which could lead to increased obesity risk in adulthood. Enzymes are biological catalysts that accelerate chemical reactions by reducing their activation energy. Enzymes specific environmental conditions to function optimally. Additive molecules and compounds, such as organic solvents, ionic liquids, and deep eutectic solvents, have crucial effects on enzyme behavior by changing activity and stability. However, finding and testing different additives is an expensive process that requires specialists, laboratory equipment, and chemical compounds. Machine learning, which has been present in all fields of science and technology in recent years, is one of the ways to find a suitable additive for our desired enzyme without doing a time-consuming experimental process. In this manuscript, we introduce ADDZYME, a machine learning-based software, to predict the effect of additives on enzyme activity. ADDZYME utilizes an ensemble of extremely randomized trees models alongside physicochemical descriptors to make a prediction. To ease usage, ADDZYME is accompanied by a graphical user interface. The phase equilibria in the Na+,K+//Cl–,NO –H2O reciprocal system in the temperature range 373–573 K were modeled using the set of parameters presented in communication I of this work. According to the results of calculations, this system has a stability region of the liquid, which boils without forming a third phase (precipitate). The change in the boiling temperature was traced for selected individual bulk compositions of the system during the gradual evaporation of water from it. In the experimental determination of the boiling points or activity of water for saturated solutions formed by the dissolution of salts with opposite cations and anions, one should take into account that the composition of such solutions will change with any changes in the total concentrations of the salts of the system if a salt other than the one used for mixing appears in the precipitate. Exposure to infectious or non‐infectious immune activation during early development is a serious risk factor for long‐term behavioural dysfunctions. Mouse models of maternal immune activation (MIA) have increasingly been used to address neuronal and behavioural dysfunctions in response to prenatal infections. One commonly employed MIA model involves administering poly(I:C) (polyriboinosinic‐polyribocytdilic acid), a synthetic analogue of double‐stranded RNA, during gestation, which robustly induces an acute viral‐like inflammatory response. Using electroencephalography (EEG) and infrared (IR) activity recordings, we explored alterations in sleep/wake, circadian and locomotor activity patterns on the adult male offspring of poly(I:C)‐treated mothers. Our findings demonstrate that these offspring displayed reduced home cage activity during the (subjective) night under both light/dark or constant darkness conditions. In line with this finding, these mice exhibited an increase in non‐rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep duration as well as an increase in sleep spindles density. Following sleep deprivation, poly(I:C)‐exposed offspring extended NREM sleep duration and prolonged NREM sleep bouts during the dark phase as compared with non‐exposed mice. Additionally, these mice exhibited a significant alteration in NREM sleep EEG spectral power under heightened sleep pressure. Together, our study highlights the lasting effects of infection and/or immune activation during pregnancy on circadian activity and sleep/wake patterns in the offspring. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Asymmetric metalloporphyrins are potential electrocatalysts to construct composites for efficient oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) due to their inherent large dipole moment, which facilitates the charge separation. To find more effective molecular structures towards the ORRs, in particular their performance and electrolyte relationship, we rationally designed two A3B-type asymmetric cobalt porphyrin aPh-TCoP and aBA-TCoP with phenyl and benzoic acid as substituents, respectively. The ORR performance of the porphyrin-decorated carbon black composites was examined in five electrolytes at different pH values spanning from 0.7 to 13.7. It was found that aBA-TCoP/C exhibited better ORR activity and selectivity than aPh-TCoP/C in all solutions. Interestingly, both composites demonstrated their highest ORR activity in the pH13.7 electrolyte and exhibited 4-electron selectivity in the pH3.7 solution. This conclusion is drawn from a comprehensive analysis of various electrochemical properties, encompassing current density, reduction potentials, electron transfer numbers, and intermediate yields. The results illustrate the regulation of ORR properties by altering the electrolyte pH and a notable improvement in the ORR performance through the modification of porphyrin substituents. These findings offer a foundational understanding for the design of efficient metalloporphyrins and the attainment of controlled oxygen reduction in electrochemical devices. Developing atomically dispersed metal on nitrogen‐doped carbon (M─N─C) catalyst provides a promising strategy to convert CO2 into high‐valued chemicals and achieve artificially closed carbon cycles. However, it is challenging to tune the structure and coordination of N─M bond that further improve the intrinsic activity and selectivity of CO2RR. Herein, CuNi atomic clusters embedded in Ni/Cu dual atomic sites catalysts (CuNiAC@Ni/Cu─N─C) are designed and successfully manipulated to regulate the coordination environment for M─N─C catalysts to enhance the CO2 electroreduction reaction (CO2RR). The most active configuration in CuNiAC@Ni/Cu─N─C catalyst is CuNi atomic cluster connected with 2N‐bridged (Ni‐Cu)N5, in which two N atoms are shared with NiN4 and CuN3 moieties verified by both systematic advanced characterizations and density function theory (DFT) calculations. The results have revealed the integration between CuNi atomic cluster and N4Ni/CuN3 dual‐metal atomic sites that optimize the electronic redistribution and narrow the bandgap, thereby decreasing the energy barrier of the potential determination step and promoting CO production. It was recently suggested that the Sun could switch to a high‐activity regime which would lead to a rise of ultraviolet radiation with an amplitude of about four times larger than the amplitude of an average solar activity cycle and a simultaneous drop in total solar irradiance. Here, we applied the SOCOLv3‐MPIOM model with an interacting ocean to simulate the response of chemistry, dynamics, and temperature of Earth's atmosphere to such a change in solar irradiance. We studied the effect of high activity regime on the atmosphere investigating the influence of the chemical and radiative processes on the climate, and chemistry of NOx, HOx, and O3. We find a climate cooling by up to 1K and a substantial increase in stratospheric ozone (up to 14%) and total ozone (up to 8%). To understand the role of the different processes we performed simulations with two sets of forcing accounting separately for the influence on chemical processes and for direct radiation energy balance. Our calculations show that the stratospheric O3 response is almost fully driven by the chemical processes. We also found that the direct radiation processes lead to near‐surface cooling that results in the suppression of the Brewer‐Dobson circulation. This, in turn, leads to the reduction of H2O influx from the low layers of the troposphere and to less intensive transport of ozone from the tropics to the middle latitudes. The surface climate response is dominated by direct radiation influence with only a small contribution from chemical processes. This, in turn, leads to the reduction of water vapor influx from the low layers of the troposphere and to less intensive transport of ozone from the tropics to the middle latitudes. Protecting nanoparticles with a carbon matrix can enhance the durability of the catalysts in alkaline fuel cells (AFC) and is well‐documented. While others have tried complex syntheses to produce small nanoparticle catalysts, in this work, in order to scale‐up batches of 15 g or more, carbon‐cap (or carbon‐coating) protected Vulcan XC72‐supported Pd−Ni (1–2) nanoparticles (Pd−Niacc/C) were successfully synthesized via a one‐step dry‐synthesis process. This catalyst was compared with a commercial Pd−Ni/Vulcan XC72 material (PdNi/C, Premetek) in terms of hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) activity and stability. To produce less ordered carbon caps (versus graphite/graphene), a low‐temperature heat‐treatment (below 500 °C) was used, resulting in Pd−Niacc/C of unique electrochemical properties: easily electrochemically activated, this catalyst outperforms PdNi/C for alkaline HOR and proves more durable under highly oxidizing accelerated stress test (AST) conditions. Identical location transmission electron microscopy (ILTEM), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and rotating disk electrode (RDE) measurements demonstrate how the Ni‐rich surface plays an important role in HOR activity for both PdNi/C and Pd‐Niacc/C and that the protective carbon‐coating of the latter ensures better durability of performance and better resistance to materials degradation. TiO 2 -based photoelectrocatalysts are synthesized by anodization at 90, 70 and 50V, using ethylenediamine to incorporate C and N elements (i.e. formation of coordinated complexes). The analysis is focused on determining the effects of oxygen vacancies, crystallite size, phase type, band gap size, elemental surface composition, roughness, and thickness of the photoelectrodes, to establish those influencing the photoelectroactivity of H 2 production. H 2 is generated with irradiations simulating solar conditions, and only visible-light. The photoelectrode formed at 70V develops the largest photocurrent, and consequently the largest H 2 production. It is revealed that the lowest content of oxygen vacancies, the highest amount of elemental C and O at the surface, and the reduction of the main band gap in this photoelectrode substantially control the photoactivity of this reaction. While the roughness and thickness of the coatings, the crystallite size, the specific surface area, and the surface compositions of elemental Ti and N are found to be negligible. Solar eclipses present rare celestial events that can elicit unique behavioral responses in animals, yet comprehensive studies on these phenomena, particularly concerning bird behavior, remain limited. This study, conducted at the Red Butte Canyon Research Natural Area in Utah during the annular solar eclipse on October 14, 2023, aimed to document and analyze avian activity using bird banding data. Leveraging 11 years of banding records, we observed a surprising positive peak in bird captures, indicating increased activity during the eclipse, challenging conventional expectations of decreased activity during peak totality. The unexpected, record-breaking captures on the eclipse day at this location, which also surpassed the average trend in captures over time for 18 other banding days in mid-October, highlights the complexity of bird behavior during celestial events. This study marks the first known published effort to conduct bird banding during a solar eclipse. Quantitative analyses, including species composition and capture trends, contribute to a nuanced understanding of avian responses to the eclipse. This study underscores the importance of empirical research in unraveling the intricacies of how birds navigate and adapt to unique environmental conditions created by solar eclipses. The aim of this study was to assess whether activity and heart rate sensor implants can be used to measure stress and thus estimate one important welfare indicator for fish in aquaculture pens, and if such measurements correlate to physiological factors measured through blood sampling. The experiment consisted of two parts: i) a bio-logger study where implanted sensors were used to monitor activity and heart rates for fish undergoing stress (crowding); and ii) an analysis of blood constituents (cortisol, glucose, lactate, and chloride) of a second group of fish undergoing the same treatment. We found that activity measurements can be used to track high-impact stress events but may not be suitable to discern possibly nuanced reactions to stress impacts of lower magnitude. While heart rate was measured reliably, e.g., in showing clear circadian rhythms, it was no credible proxy for predicting stress in this study. Our results thus underline challenges observed in previous work around the use of heart rate as stress indicator, and imply that the translation of its meaning into a proxy for stress needs further work. Although tag-based monitoring of stress is not without its difficulties, studies such as this provide a wealth of information on salmon behaviour and physiology, and the links between these. The intensities of the hydrogen Balmer lines of solar-like stars are investigated for stellar chromospheric activity by using the co-source spectral data of the LAMOST Low-Resolution Spectroscopic Survey (LRS) and Medium-Resolution Spectroscopic Survey (MRS). The Balmer H α , H β , H γ , and H δ lines in the LRS data and the H α line in the MRS data are analyzed. The absolute flux indexes, defined as the ratios of the absolute fluxes at the centers of the Balmer lines to the stellar bolometric flux, are employed to indicate the intensity magnitudes of the Balmer lines in response to stellar activity. The H α indexes derived from the LRS data and the MRS data, respectively, are calibrated to be quantitatively consistent with each other. It is found that, as the H α index increases, the H β , H γ , and H δ indexes first present trend of increasing and then decreasing, and finally increase synchronously with the H α index. The distributions of the Balmer line indexes also reveal the three distinct stages of stellar activity (normal stage, intense stage, and extremely intense stage), in which the extremely intense stage is characterized by the synchronous growth of the indexes of the four Balmer lines. The different behaviors of the H β , H γ , and H δ lines from that of the H α line can be interpreted by the different mechanisms by which the line-core intensities are formed, and the three distinct activity stages imply the very different magnetic field environments and physical conditions of solar-like stars. Results are presented from an analysis of manifestations of the activity of the spectral class K2V dwarf HD189733, which has one of the best studied exoplanets of the hot-Jupiter type. Including the activity of the star makes analysis of the characteristics of the planet considerably more complicated (in particular, cool spots on the star's surface introduce an additional signal in the relation between the depth of a transit and the size of the planet and prevent an exact determination of the radius of the planet). Photometric data for HD189733 in the archive of the TESS mission are analyzed and conclusions are reached on the values of the rotation period Prot of the star, for which we estimated values of 12.5 and 11.3 days for sectors 41 and 54, respectively. A comparison of these with previous estimates based on earthbound photometric observations suggests that the differences in Prot at different times are related to the fact of different observation times spots located at different latitudes on the surface of the differentially rotating star predominated. According to the TESS data the amplitude of the brightness variation of HD189733 is 1.6 and 0.9% of the mean brightness level of the star (for sectors 41 and 54, respectively). The standard method was used to estimate the spottedness parameter of the star (2.0 and 1.2% of the star's surface area) and values of the area of the spotted surface A of the star in absolute terms (9200 MSH and 5400 MSH for sectors 41 and 54, respectively) were obtained. Based on 771 estimates of the star's brightness in the V band presented in the Kamogata Wide-field Survey, an analysis was made of the long-term activity of HD189733 which yielded indications of the possible existence of activity cycles of duration 1140 and 4220 days (3.1 and 11.6 years, respectively). Based on an analysis of published data it has been concluded that the level of chromospheric activity of HD189733 exceeds the average values typical of other cool dwarfs with analogous values of the color index (B-V) and is higher than the solar value. It is concluded that HD189733 has a moderate (or somewhat higher than average) activity typical of analogous dwarfs in spectral class K but, nevertheless, requires that the properties and evolution of the planet formed around this star be taken into detailed account during modeling, regardless of whether a simplified method or an exact magnetohydrodynamic model is used to estimate them. It should also be noted that the activity of the star is a variable over time (on a time scale comparable to Prot) and requires estimates that are made simultaneously with the main studies of the exoplanet's atmosphere. Clay swell potential can be classified based on the value of activity and it is defined as the ratio of plasticity index to clay content as a percentage. This paper outlines the investigation into how activity correlates with other key properties of clayey soils. Specifically, four approaches were evaluated for predicting activity using: (a) liquid limit (LL), specific surface area (SSA), cation exchange capacity (CEC) and clay content; (b) LL, SSA and CEC; (c) LL; and (d) SSA and CEC. For this purpose, a database of 104 samples was collected from which 35 machine learning algorithms were trained. Gradient Boosting Trees showed the highest prediction accuracy in the four approaches and, to improve its prediction performance, a Bayesian Optimization was applied to tune theirs hyperparameters, resulting in the final models. The performance of the developed models was evaluated, showing prominent results with exceptionally good metrics, except in the approach from SSA and CEC where the trained algorithm was not capable of predicting activity with confidence (R2=0.46). This algorithm can predict activity using only LL with high accuracy (R2=0.94), and when combined with SSA and CEC, the precision is further enhanced (R2=0.96). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Patient activity after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) surgery has been estimated through patient-reported outcome measures. The use of data from an implanted sensor that transmits daily gait activity provides a more objective, complete recovery trajectory. In this retrospective analysis of 794 patients who received a TKA with sensors in the tibial extension between October 4, 2021, and January 13, 2023, the average age of the patients was 64 years, and the cohort was 54.9% women. During the 6-week postoperative period, 90.3% of patients transmitted data. Patient activity in terms of qualified step count, cadence, walking speed, stride length, functional tibial range of motion (ROM), and functional knee ROM were compared at 1 week, 3 weeks, and 6 weeks postoperatively. All gait parameters increased in the first 6 weeks postsurgery: qualified step count increased 733%, cadence increased 22%, walking speed increased 50%, stride length increased 17%, tibial ROM increased 19%, and functional knee ROM increased 14%. There were statistically significant differences at both postoperative periods (P =.029, P <.001, and P <.001 at 3 and 6 weeks, respectively) in step counts for different body mass index (BMI) categories, with qualified step counts decreasing with increasing BMI. Patients under 65 years tended to have a higher qualified step count than those 65 and older at all time points, but these differences were not statistically significant. Men had significantly higher step counts than women (P <.001 at 1, 3, and 6 weeks). Initial results with an implanted sensor that collects data during activities of daily living confirm that 90% of patients transmit objective gait metrics daily after TKA surgery. The cerebral palsies (CP) have a UK prevalence of 1–2/1000. 60–80% of children with CP have upper-limb involvement. Physical movement difficulties including tone abnormalities, weakness and secondary musculoskeletal function are associated with sensory, cognitive difficulties and medical co-morbidities. Understanding the underlying pathophysiology of CP and structured multidisciplinary assessment in the context of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) can guide management to improve activity and participation for children with CP. A range of therapy, medical and surgical interventions may be offered to a child and their family. The selection of treatment options should be focused on individualized and realistic goals. Clear outcomes should be evaluated. This review aims to summarize a structured approach to assessment and management of upper limb function in CP; and is illustrated by case examples. Context: Introduced predators pose a significant threat to biodiversity. Understanding how predators interact with other threats such as fire is crucial to developing effective conservation strategies. Aims: We investigated interactions between the greater bilby (Macrotis lagotis) and two introduced predators, the European red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and feral cat (Felis catus), in response to fire management in a remote part of the Tanami Desert, Australia. Methods: We used motion-sensor cameras and non-invasive genetic sampling to monitor bilbies and predators. We compared activity profiles to determine the level of temporal overlap among species, and used generalised linear modelling to assess the correlation between activity and average normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI; as a proxy for fire-associated environmental change). Finally, we used spatially explicit capture–recapture modelling to estimate cat and bilby densities before and after fire. Key results: Cat and bilby activity declined following fire, whereas fox activity increased (despite only a small proportion of the study area being burnt). Bilbies and foxes showed the greatest overlap in temporal activity (76%), followed by bilbies and cats (71%) and cats and foxes (68%). Bilbies and cats were more likely to be captured in areas with a lower NDVI, whereas foxes were more likely to be captured in areas with a higher NDVI. Bilby density declined significantly following fire, whereas cat density remained constant through time. Conclusions: Declines in bilby activity and density following fire may be attributed to emigration from the study area and/or increases in fox activity. Post-burn emigration could be due to wide scale destruction of important food resources. However, given much of the study area where bilbies were detected remained unburnt, it is more likely that observed declines are related to increases in fox activity and associated increases in predation pressure. Improved understanding may be gained by experimentally manipulating both fire and predator densities. Implications: Increases in fox activity following fire are likely to have devastating consequences for the local bilby population. It is thus vital that appropriate management activities are put in place to protect bilbies from foxes. This may be achieved through a combination of lethal control and indirect methods. Cats and foxes are a significant threat to bilbies, with their impacts likely to be worsened by fire. We used camera-traps and genetic sampling to investigate whether bilby–predator interactions changed in response to planned fire. We found a high level of overlap in activity among the three species, and a general decline in bilby and cat activity, and an increase in fox activity following fire. Our study indicated that broad-scale fire is likely to have negative consequences for bilby populations, most likely owing to an increase in fox predation pressure. The health benefits of physical activity are well recognised. This study assessed whether golfers were more physically active after lower limb arthroplasty when compared to those that did not play golf (primary outcome). In addition pre and postoperative changes in health-associated quality of life (HAQoL) and joint specific outcomes between golfers and none golfers were assessed (secondary outcomes). There were 304 patients [THA (n = 155) or TKA (n = 149)] prospectively registered during a 4-month period undergoing lower limb arthroplasty. The mean age was 70.0 (range 37–92, standard deviation 10.2) years and included 188 (61%) females and 120 (39%) males. They completed pre and postoperative questionnaires assessing recreational activity, physical activity, HAQoL (EuroQol [EQ]), joint specific health (Oxford scores), and satisfaction. Golfers (n = 33, 10.9%) were more likely to achieve longer than 3 hours of moderate activity during a week (48.5% vs 38.0%, odds ratio (OR) 3.4, p = 0.045) and achieved their recommended activity level (96.8% vs 77.7%, OR 8.6, p = 0.015) compared to non-golfers following arthroplasty. Postoperative EQ5D (p = 0.034) and EQVAS (p = 0.019) were significantly greater in golfers. The joint specific Oxford hip score was greater in golfers compared to non-golfers (mean difference 5.6, p = 0.022), however no difference was observed in the Oxford knee score following TKA (p = 0.495). Golfers were more likely to achieve their weekly recommended level of physical activity and had a greater HAQoL relative to those that did not play golf following lower limb arthroplasty. More specifically after THA golfers also had a greater postoperative joint specific outcome, but no such advantage was observed in those following TKA. Lions (Panthera leo) and tigers (Panthera tigris) are nocturnal animals. Opportunistically, they may hunt during the daytime in the wild. In captivity, they spend most of their time sleeping, resting, or pacing and face different conditions seasonally as compared to their natural habitat. It alters their activity and may reduce agility. By studying the impact of seasonal variation on captive behavior, the temperature and other seasonally dependent factors can be optimized in the zoo. This study was designed to investigate the effect of summer and winter seasons on adult and juvenile carnivores’ captive behavior. The study was conducted in Lahore Zoological Garden, Pakistan, documenting the cage area and behavioral ethogram. The subjects were two African lions, six African lionesses, four lion cubs, two Bengal tigers, and two Bengal tigresses which were observed for auditory, aggression, feeding, moving, resting, and excretory behaviors by scan sampling method. The winter data were collected in February and summer data were collected in June for ten days each month in three sessions (8:00-10:00 am, 12:00-2:00 pm, and 4:00-6:00 pm). A total of 60 h of data were collected for each season. The activity budget of animals for both seasons was compared and the alteration in any behavioral category was analyzed. The results showed that the significantly altered behavior in all animal groups was moving (p<0.05). Seasonal variation had a significant impact on the resting (p<0.05) of Bengal tigers, Bengal tigresses, and lion cubs. Auditory behavior (p<0.05) of Bengal tigers and lion cubs while aggressive behavior (p<0.05) of Bengal tigers significantly varied in the summer and winter seasons. All other behaviors were not significantly affected by the seasonal change in each of the carnivore groups. Background and Objectives: This study investigated whether serum alpha-1-acid glycoprotein (AGP) at diagnosis could reflect the cross-sectional activity represented by the Birmingham vasculitis activity score (BVAS) and further predict poor outcomes during follow-up in patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody-associated vasculitis (AAV). Materials and Methods: This study included 70 patients with AAV. Clinical data at diagnosis, including AAV-specific indices and acute-phase reactants such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP), were reviewed. All-cause mortality, relapse, end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), cerebrovascular accident, and acute coronary syndrome were evaluated as poor outcomes of AAV. Serum AGP was measured using the sera obtained and stored at diagnosis. Results: The median age of the patients was 63.0 years, with 29 male and 41 female patients. The median serum AGP was 150.9 μg/mL. At diagnosis, serum AGP was significantly correlated with BVAS and ESR but not CRP or serum albumin. Additionally, serum AGP showed significant correlations with the sum scores of ear–nose–throat and pulmonary manifestations; however, no significant differences in serum AGP according to each poor outcome were observed. Although serum AGP at diagnosis tended to be associated with ESKD occurrence during follow-up, serum AGP at AAV diagnosis was not significantly useful in predicting the future occurrence of poor outcomes of AAV during follow-up. Conclusions: In this study, we demonstrated the clinical utility of serum AGP at AAV diagnosis in assessing the cross-sectional activity represented by BVAS in patients with AAV for the first time. Background: Identifying rheumatoid arthritis patients at higher risk of complications after total hip arthroplasty could make perioperative management more effective. Here we examined whether disease activity is associated with risk of such complications. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed data for 337 rheumatoid arthritis patients at our medical center who underwent primary total hip arthroplasty. Rheumatoid arthritis patients were categorized according to the simplified disease activity index (SDAI), the values of which at admission and follow-up were averaged together. Logistic regression was used to examine associations of mean SDAI with rates of dislocation, infection, periprosthetic fracture and aseptic loosening. As controls, 337 osteoarthritis patients who did not have systemic inflammation and who underwent the same procedure were matched across numerous clinicodemographic variables. Results: Among the 337 rheumatoid arthritis patients, 38 (11.3%) had postoperative complications, the rates of which varied significantly from 0 to 17.5% (p = 0.003) among the four subgroups whose disease activity based on mean SDAI was categorized as high, moderate, low or in remission. Each 1-unit increase in mean SDAI was associated with a significant increase in risk of postoperative complications (OR 1.015, 95% CI 1.001–1.029, p = 0.035). Across all rheumatoid arthritis patients, rate of complications did not differ significantly between patients who received disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs or other treatments. Rates of dislocation, of infection or of all postoperative complications combined were significantly lower among osteoarthritis controls than among rheumatoid arthritis patients. Conclusion: Greater mean SDAI is associated with higher risk of dislocation, infection and composite postoperative complications after total hip arthroplasty in rheumatoid arthritis patients. These patients show a significantly higher rate of postoperative complications than osteoarthritis patients, likely reflecting the influence of systemic inflammation. Heparinases, including heparinases I–III (HepI, HepII, and HepIII, respectively), are important tools for producing low‐molecular‐weight heparin, an improved anticoagulant. The poor thermostability of heparinases significantly hinders their industrial and laboratory applications. To improve the thermostability of heparinases, we applied a rigid linker (EAAAK)5 (R) and a flexible linker (GGGGS)5 (F) to fuse maltose‐binding protein (MBP) and HepI, HepII, and HepIII from Pedobacter heparinus, replacing the original linker from the plasmid pMAL‐c2X. Compared with their parental fusion protein, MBP‐fused HepIs, HepIIs, and HepIIIs with linkers (EAAAK)5 or (GGGGS)5 all displayed enhanced thermostability (half‐lives at 30°C: 242%–464%). MBP‐fused HepIs and HepIIs exhibited higher specific activity (127%–324%), whereas MBP‐fused HepIIIs displayed activity similar to that of their parental fusion protein. Kinetics analysis revealed that MBP‐fused HepIIs showed a significantly decreased affinity toward heparin with increased Km values (397%–480%) after the linker replacement, whereas the substrate affinity did not change significantly for MBP‐fused HepIs and HepIIIs. Furthermore, it preliminarily appeared that the depolymerization mechanism of these fusion proteins may not change after linker replacement. These findings suggest the superior enzymatic properties of MBP‐fused heparinases with suitable linker designs and their potential for the bioproduction of low‐molecular‐weight heparin. Prey-predator interactions across time and space strongly influence many animal communities. This study unveils the first insights into the ecology of the Eurasian red squirrel (Sciurus vulgaris) in Mongolia, and specifically in Bogd Khan Mountain Strictly Protected Area. We used by-catch data obtained from camera traps to analyze activity patterns and potential interactions with mammalian predators. Red squirrels exhibited primarily diurnal activity with occasional nocturnal forays, while potential predators like foxes (Vulpes vulpes, Vulpes corsac) and martens (Martes foina, Martes zibellina) displayed cathemeral and nocturnal patterns, respectively. The diurnal Pallas’s cat (Otocolobus manul) showed the greatest activity overlap with squirrels. Suggesting predator avoidance behavior potentially mediated by olfactory cues, squirrel activity was negatively impacted by marten presence, which was in turn potentially affected by human disturbance. We highlight the need for further investigations, particularly regarding the dietary composition of Pallas’s cats in forested habitats and the broader ecological implications of human disturbance on predator–prey dynamics within this crucial conservation area. To identify and describe possible ways of experiencing an intervention with hand orthoses in a study group including boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) and their parents. To capture the experiences of the persons directly involved as well as their family members. Eight boys with DMD (aged 8–21; median age 17.7) and five of their parents were interviewed immediately post-intervention. Additionally, follow-up interviews were later performed with five boys and three parents. Ten categories of intervention experiences emerged and were allocated to three aspects: "Prerequisites in the treatment situation", "The intervention makes a difference" and "Instilling hope for the future". The requirements for intervention success include co-operation with parents and hand orthoses with a good fit. Maintained or increased joint mobility, reduced pain and improved occupational performance were experienced. The boys and parents perceived that the intervention with hand orthoses could counteract the deterioration of the boys' hands. This instilled hope of preserving occupational performance throughout life. They also considered that a good hand-orthosis fit, appropriate adjustments to daily routines and good co-operation with the people around them were important for the intervention to be and remain successful. Preserving the ability to perform activities with the hands is of paramount importance for boys with Duchenne muscular dystrophy and their parents. Intervention with hand orthoses counteracts deterioration of the hands. Successful treatment with hand orthoses requires that specific prerequisites in the treatment situation are met, that the treatment makes a difference for activity performance and that it instils hope for the future when it comes to performing meaningful activities. Despite growing numbers of references to Vygotsky’s historical-cultural framework in the international literature, the interventionist principles of his methodology and relationship to practice remain implicit or absent in the literature. The objective of this article is to present a framework for intervention and research rooted in Vygotsky’s framework and one that mobilizes cross self-confrontations. This Vygotskian methodology is part of an intervention in response to a request from a regional taekwondo league, following a change in the application of fighting rules. This article demonstrates how this methodology enables the development of techniques and the analysis of development processes simultaneously. The results illustrate the advancement of athletes’ techniques through the progressive instrumentalization of biomechanical data. The Vygotskian methodology empowers athletes to assume an active role in the analysis of their techniques, thereby facilitating their development. In other words, the principle mobilized here is not to describe technique qualitatively, but to bring about qualitative changes. This is achieved by developing the athlete’s activity through the use of biomechanics as a means of deliberation, comparison, controversy, astonishment, dialog and reworking techniques. Selaginella willdenowii, a commonly used greenhouse fern, was often used as a biowaste to synthesize zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) in an eco-friendly and cost-effective way. UV–Visible spectra studies were carried out to confirm the synthesis of S. willdenowii-mediated ZnO NPs (SW-ZnO NPs), and a peak at 367nm with a sharp band gap of 3.415eV was observed. The X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the crystalline size of the synthesized SW-ZnO NPs was 11.971nm. The phytochemicals present in the extracts and the compounds involved in the reduction of metal to nanoparticles were determined by Fourier Transform Infrared analysis. Scanning electron microscopy was utilized to analyze the surface morphology and size of the obtained SW-ZnO NPs. The examination revealed that they exhibited a hexagonal shape, with an average size falling within the range of 17–23nm. Under ultra-violet light, reactive blue 220 and reactive yellow 145 dyes showed 78.06% and 60.14% degradation, showing potential photocatalytic degradation activity. The synthesized SW-ZnO NPs also exhibited antimicrobial activity against bacterial strains (Escherichia coli and Bacillus subtilis) and fungal cultures (Candida tropicalis and Candida albicans) showed cytotoxic activity against Hep-G2 cell lines. Our results suggest the green synthesized SW-ZnO NPs have potential photocatalytic, antimicrobial and cytotoxic potential. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Animal personalities are differences in behaviour among individuals of the same species that are consistent over time and contexts. The integration of animal personality into conservation actions is hampered by limited understanding of personality traits in non‐model organisms. We estimated repeatabilities and correlations between behaviours in Nannoperca vittata (western pygmy perch), a threatened freshwater fish species endemic to south‐western Australia, and, for comparative purposes, in Poecilia reticulata (guppy), a species frequently used in personality research. Each fish was measured four times for each of seven behavioural variables, presumed to reflect five underlying personality traits. Track length (TL) was used as a measure of activity; time spent in a risky zone (RZ) and time to emergence (ET) for boldness; latency to approach a novel object (LA) and time spent close to the object (TS) for exploration; time spent close to a mirror (CV) for sociability and number of attacks at the mirror (AT) for aggression. Four behavioural variables (TL, RZ, ET and CV) were significantly repeatable in N. vittata and also in P. reticulata. There was a lack of concordance in phenotypic and among‐individual correlations between variables in both species, emphasising the importance of partitioning trait covariances to infer behavioural syndromes. Significant among‐individual correlations were found between activity, boldness and sociability variables in N. vittata, consistent with a proactive‐reactive personality axis, but not in P. reticulata. Personality variation should be considered in conservation actions for N. vittata, particularly with respect to unintended consequences of domestication selection in captive breeding and release. Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) represents an additional burden and a poor prognostic factor for the onset or worsening of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular complications. In many patients with lupus nephritis (LN), MetS is often already manifested initially. Our work aimed to determine the frequency and characteristics of MetS in patients with LN, as well as the relationship components of MetS and characteristics of disease activity. Methods: The clinical study included 67 patients with LN, 54 (80.59%) female and 13 (19.41%) male, with an average age of 42.86±14.46 years. Patients were divided into two groups: with MetS (35.82%) and without MetS (64.18%), active LN had (34 or 50.74%), and LN in remission (33 or 49.25%). We monitored clinical and biochemical parameters of interest. Results: Comparing patients with LN collectively, as well as those with MetS and without MetS, we observed that patients with MetS were older (p=0.001), BMI (p<0.001), and systolic arterial pressure was higher (p=0.002), and smokers were more common in this group (p<0.001). In the analysis, increased triglycerides (p<0.001) and creatinine (p=0.027), and decreased albumin (p=0.050) and GFR (p=0.020) were observed in the group with MetS. MetS was present in 44.11% of patients with active LN and in 27.7% with LN in remission. The most common MetS parameter was arterial hypertension (76.6%), which correlated with GFR and creatinine; hypertriglyceridemia (47.8%), which is correlated with anti-ds-DNA Ab, erythrocyturia, proteinuria, and SLEDAI/r index; decreased HDL cholesterol (28.4%) which significantly correlated with albumin, C3 and anti-ds-DNA Ab. Conclusions: In our patients with LN, MetS was associated with older age, impaired kidney function, and smoking. The most common parameter of MetS was arterial hypertension and dyslipidemia, which were significantly correlated with disease activity parameters, indicating an increased risk of cardiovascular complications in this group of patients. The notion of force is at the heart of Leibniz's metaphysics. One of his central theses is that powers are to be reconceived as forces. Connectedly, he maintains that force is essential to the very account of substance. The paper contends that these claims have not been well understood due to an inadequate understanding of the notion of force itself. Against a common reading, I argue that Leibnizian force is not fundamentally dispositional, but an activity. Taking seriously this idea means reconsidering not only the nature and function of powers, but also the basic character of Leibniz's metaphysics—including his view of substances as soul-like and as causally independent. This paper contributes to the social theoretical foundations of a sociology of media and communication by making use of the cultural–historical school in psychology. Such perspective gains relevance in digital capitalism and the blurring of production and Internet usage. The paper first revisits Habermas's influential notion of communicative action and agency. Second, it uses activity theory as an alternative, more promising way of theorising because it links communication closer to work. A model of communicative action is introduced and a conceptual link between media and human tool use is established. Third, the paper elaborates on the notion of activity in the digital world and posits that digitalisation can be understood as a 'machinisation' of mental and communicative-coordinative work. The developed perspective, the paper concludes, allows critical media and communication sociology to operate with meaningful concepts of communicative expropriation, exploitation and alienation. Urbanization is a significant driver of the global biodiversity crisis. Turtles are particularly impacted by urbanization because of the vulnerability of riparian habitats to habitat loss and road mortality. Behaviour plays a crucial role in determining the success of urban animals. Behavioural responses to urbanization, however, are rarely studied in turtles even though many turtles are at‐risk and sometimes live in urban areas. Therefore, we evaluated behavioural changes in painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) living in wetlands surrounded by a gradient of urbanization. We tested the consistency of painted turtle behaviour in the laboratory and examined the behaviour of painted turtles from 24 wetland sites across an urbanization gradient in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. We assessed: (i) aggression by measuring the number of active defensive behaviours the turtles performed in response to handling, (ii) boldness by measuring the amount of time the turtles took to emerge from their shells and move from their initial locations in a circular arena and (iii) activity by measuring the amount of time the turtles spent moving in the same circular arena. We found that all behaviours were consistent in the laboratory. We also found that as the level of urbanization increased, turtles were more aggressive and bolder. Urbanization affects painted turtle behaviour, but further research is required to understand the mechanisms responsible and the conservation implications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Infectious diseases have been jeopardized problem that threaten public health over a long period of time. The growing prevalence of drug‐resistant pathogens and infectious cases have led to a decrease in the number of effective antibiotics, which highlights the urgent need for the development of new antibacterial agents. Serine acetyltransferase (SAT), also known as CysE in certain bacterial species, and O‐acetylserine sulfhydrylase (OASS), also known as CysK in select bacteria, are indispensable enzymes within the cysteine biosynthesis pathway of various pathogenic microorganisms. These enzymes play a crucial role in the survival of these pathogens, making SAT and OASS promising targets for the development of novel anti‐infective agents. In this comprehensive review, we present an introduction to the structure and function of SAT and OASS, along with an overview of existing inhibitors for SAT and OASS as potential antibacterial agents. Our primary focus is on elucidating the inhibitory activities, structure–activity relationships, and mechanisms of action of these inhibitors. Due to their tremendous industrial, environmental, and biological applications, research focusing on the synthesis and applications of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) has attracted increased interest from researchers over the past two decades. Their structural as well as textural properties can be easily tuned depending on the synthesis protocol utilized. Combustion synthesis has received increased attention as a one-pot route for the synthesis of a wide spectrum of nanomaterials. In this study, we present the results of synthesizing Ag NPs employing urea as a combustion fuel. The effect of the temperature of calcination on the formation and structural features of Ag NPs has been checked over the 400–700 °C temperature range. The characterization of the synthesized Ag NPs has been performed using XRD, SEM, TEM, and XPS techniques. It was found that Ag NPs, with a crystallite size of 40 nm, start to form at around 400 °C. Conducting the calcination at the 500–700 °C range results in the persistence of the obtained Ag NPs. Moreover, the obtained nanomaterials are characterized by a membrane-like morphology. The activity performance of the synthesized Ag NPs was examined for the hydrolysis of sodium borohydride (NaBH4) over a temperature range of 35–50 °C. Increasing the calcination temperature has led to a decrease in the activity of the Ag NPs during the NaBH4 hydrolysis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Stimulating activities are associated with a decreased risk of dementia. However, the extent to which this reflects a protective effect of activity or non-participation resulting from dementia is debated. We investigated the association of stimulating leisure-time activity in late adulthood with the risk of dementia across up to two decades' follow-up. Methods We used data from five prospective cohort studies from Finland and Sweden. Mental, social, outdoor, consumptive and physical leisure-time activities were self-reported. Incident dementia was ascertained from clinical diagnoses or healthcare and death registers. Cox regression was used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results Of the 33 263 dementia-free individuals aged ≥50 years at baseline, 1408 had dementia during a mean follow-up of 7.0 years. Active participation in mental (HR: 0.52, 95% CI: 0.41 to 0.65), social (HR: 0.56 95% CI: 0.46 to 0.72), outdoor (HR: 0.70, 95% CI: 0.58 to 0.85), consumptive (HR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.53 to 0.94) and physical (HR: 0.62, 95% CI: 0.51 to 0.75) activity, as well as variety (HR: 0.54, 95% CI: 0.43 to 0.68) and the overall frequency of activity (HR: 0.41, 95% CI: 0.34 to 0.49) were associated with a reduced risk of dementia in <10 years' follow-up. In ≥10 years' follow-up all associations attenuated toward the null. Conclusion Stimulating leisure-time activities are associated with a reduced risk of dementia in short-term but not long-term follow-up. These findings may reflect a reduction in leisure-time activity following preclinical dementia or dilution of the association over time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dementia, or major neurocognitive disorder, is one of the most common causes of disability and dependency in older adults with far-reaching social, physical, and economic impacts. In the absence of adequate treatment, much research has been directed towards prevention. Physical exercise has been shown to increase cerebral blood flow, amplify production of neurotrophic factors, and enhance brain volume. Whether these changes on a structural and cellular level result in cognitive preservation is less clear. This systematic review synthesizes findings from seventeen randomized controlled trials that examine the effects of physical activity on global cognition, memory, and executive function in older adults. Cognitive benefits of exercise are strongest for those who are cognitively intact or with mild cognitive impairment. In studies with long-term follow up, cognitive gains tended to decay after cessation of physical intervention suggesting that sustained physical exercise may be required to preserve cognitive function in older adults prior to onset of dementia.
