Circumnuclear star formation (SF) is generally seen in galaxies hosting active galactic nuclei (AGN); however, the connection between the AGN activity and SF in them is less well understood. To explore this connection on scales of a few tens of parsecs to a few tens of kiloparsecs and larger, we carried out an investigation of SF in seven Seyfert-type AGN and one low-ionization nuclear emission-line region galaxy, using observations with the Ultraviolet Imaging Telescope on board AstroSat in the near-ultraviolet (2000–3000 Å) and far-ultraviolet (1300−1800 Å) bands. A total of 1742 star-forming regions were identified, having size scales of 0.010–63.642 kpc2. Considering all the galaxies, we found a positive correlation between their total surface density of SF (ΣSFR) and extinction. For five galaxies, namely NGC 1365, NGC 4051, NGC 4321, NGC 5033, and NGC 6814, we found a gradual decrease of both extinction and ΣSFR from the centre to the outer regions. Four sources are found to lie in the main sequence of star-forming galaxies, and the other four lie away from it. We found the ratio of the star formation rate (SFR) in the nuclear region to the total SFR to be positively correlated with the Eddington ratio. This points to the influence of AGN in enhancing the SF characteristics of the hosts. Outflows driven by active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are seen in numerous compact sources; however, it has remained unclear how to distinguish between the driving mechanisms, such as winds and jets. Therefore, our study aims to offer observational insights from simulations to aid in this distinction. Specifically, in this paper, we investigate the evolution of wide-angled moderately relativistic magnetized winds and analyse their non-thermal radio emission and polarization properties. We find that the evolution of winds varies depending on factors such as power, density, and opening angle, which in turn influence their observable characteristics. Additionally, different viewing angles can lead to varying observations. Furthermore, we note distinctions in the evolution of winds compared to jets, resulting in disparities in their observable features. Jets typically exhibit a thin spine and hotspot(s). Winds manifest broader spines or an 'hourglass-shaped' bright emission in the cocoon, which are capped by bright arcs. Both display high polarization coinciding with the bright spine and hotspots/arcs, although these regions are relatively compact and localized in jets when compared to winds. We emphasize the importance of high resolution, as we demonstrate that emission features from both jets and winds can become indistinguishable at lower resolutions. A well-known calibrator source in radio astronomy, 3C 286 (⁠|$z=0.85$|⁠), is a compact steep-spectrum (CSS) radio source and spectroscopically classified as a narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1) galaxy. It is also known for its damped Ly |$\alpha$| system from an intervening galaxy at |$z=0.692$| detected in both ultraviolet (UV) and radio spectra. In addition, despite being a misaligned active galactic nuclei (AGN), 3C 286 is also detected in |$\gamma$| -rays by Fermi. Thus, this unique object combines the characteristics of CSS sources, NLS1 galaxies, and |$\gamma$| -ray emitters with misaligned jets, providing an excellent laboratory for extending our knowledge of AGN disc–jet coupling. Despite its significance, 3C 286 has been rarely observed in X-rays. In this study, we present our deep XMM–Newton and Chandra observations of 3C 286. The results reveal that the X-ray spectrum can be well-described by models including an intervening absorber with redshift and column density consistent with previous UV and radio observations. The most important finding is that the spectrum cannot be described by a single power law, but a soft excess is required which is parametrized by a blackbody. Furthermore, we find evidence suggesting the presence of off-nuclear X-ray emission at a radius that corresponds to the location of the radio lobes. While further theoretical work is still needed, our findings offer new clues to understand the specific mechanism for |$\gamma$| -ray emission from this unique object. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Small-scale winds driven from accretion discs surrounding active galactic nuclei (AGN) are expected to launch kpc-scale outflows into their host galaxies. However, the ways in which the structure of the interstellar medium (ISM) affects the multiphase content and impact of the outflow remain uncertain. We present a series of numerical experiments featuring a realistic small-scale AGN wind with velocity |$5\times 10^3 \!-\! 10^4\rm {\ km\ s^{-1}}$| interacting with an isolated galaxy disc with a manually controlled clumpy ISM, followed at sub-pc resolution. Our simulations are performed with arepo and probe a wide range of AGN luminosities (⁠|$L_{\rm {AGN}}{=} 10^{43-47}\rm {\ erg\ s^{-1}}$|⁠) and ISM substructures. In homogeneous discs, the AGN wind sweeps up an outflowing, cooling shell, where the emerging cold phase dominates the mass and kinetic energy budgets, reaching a momentum flux |$\dot{p} \approx 7\ L/c$|⁠. However, when the ISM is clumpy, outflow properties are profoundly different. They contain small, long-lived (⁠|$\gtrsim 5\ \rm {Myr}$|⁠), cold (⁠|$T{\lesssim }10^{4.5}{\rm {\ K}}$|⁠) cloudlets entrained in the faster, hot outflow phase, which are only present in the outflow if radiative cooling is included in the simulation. While the cold phase dominates the mass of the outflow, most of the kinetic luminosity is now carried by a tenuous, hot phase with |$T \gtrsim 10^7 \, \rm K$|⁠. While the hot phases reach momentum fluxes |$\dot{p} \approx (1 - 5)\ L/c$|⁠ , energy-driven bubbles couple to the cold phase inefficiently, producing modest momentum fluxes |$\dot{p} \lesssim L/c$| in the fast-outflowing cold gas. These low momentum fluxes could lead to the outflows being misclassified as momentum-driven using common observational diagnostics. We also show predictions for scaling relations between outflow properties and AGN luminosity and discuss the challenges in constraining outflow driving mechanisms and kinetic coupling efficiencies using observed quantities. We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 817 during an intensive multiwavelength reverberation mapping campaign for 16 months. Here, we examine the behavior of narrow UV absorption lines seen in the Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph spectra, both during the campaign and in other epochs extending over 14 yr. We conclude that, while the narrow absorption outflow system (at −3750 km s−1 with FWHM = 177 km s−1) responds to the variations of the UV continuum as modified by the X-ray obscurer, its total column density (log N H = 19.5 − 0.13 + 0.61 cm−2) did not change across all epochs. The adjusted ionization parameter (scaled with respect to the variations in the hydrogen-ionizing continuum flux) is log U H = −1.0 − 0.3 + 0.1 . The outflow is located at a distance smaller than 38 pc from the central source, which implies a hydrogen density of n H > 3000 cm−3. The absorption outflow system only covers the continuum emission source and not the broad emission line region, which suggests that its transverse size is small (< 1016 cm), with potential cloud geometries ranging from spherical to elongated along the line of sight. For the first time, a calibration between the He  i |$\lambda 5876$| /H  |$\beta$| emission line ratio and the helium abundance y = 12 + log(He/H) for Narrow line regions of Seyfert 2 Active Galactic Nuclei is proposed. In this context, observational data (taken from the SDSS-DR15 and from the literature) and direct abundance estimates (via the |$T_{\rm e}$| -method) for a sample of 65 local (⁠|$z \: \lt \: 0.2$|⁠) Seyfert 2 nuclei are considered. The resulting calibration estimates the y abundance with an average uncertainty of 0.02 dex. Applying our calibration to spectroscopic data containing only strong emission lines, it yields a helium abundance distribution similar to that obtained via the |$T_{\rm e}$| -method. Some cautions must be considered to apply our calibration for Seyfert 2 nuclei with high values of electron temperature (⁠|${\gtrsim} 20\, 000$|  K) or ionization parameter (⁠|$\log U \ \gt\ {-}2.0$|⁠). Ultraviolet (UV)/optical variability in quasars is a well-observed phenomenon, yet its primeval origins remain unclear. This study investigates whether the accretion disc turbulence, which is responsible for UV/optical variability, is influenced by the close environment of the accretion by analysing the correlation between variability and infrared emission for two luminous quasar samples from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The first sample includes light curves from SDSS, Panoramic Survey Telescope and Rapid Response System (Pan-STARRS), and Zwicky Transient Facility g -band photometry, while the second sample utilizes SDSS Stripe 82 g -band light curves. We explore the correlation between the g -band excess variance (⁠|$\sigma _{\mathrm{ rms}}$|⁠) and the wavelength-dependent infrared covering factor (⁠|$L_{\rm IR}(\lambda)/L_{\rm bol}$|⁠), controlling for the effects of redshift, luminosity, and black hole mass. An anticorrelation between two variables is observed in both samples, which is strongest at wavelengths of 2–3  |$\rm{\mu m}$| but gradually weakens towards longer wavelength. This suggests the equatorial dusty torus (which dominates near-infrared emission) plays a significant role in influencing the UV/optical variability, while the cooler polar dust (which contributes significantly to mid-infrared emission) does not. The findings indicate that quasar variability may be connected to the physical conditions within the dusty torus which feeds the accretion, and support the notion that the close environment of the accretion plays an important role in regulating the accretion disc turbulence. An increasing number of exoplanets have been discovered in the Milky Way galaxy, which is also known to harbour a super-massive black hole (Sagittarius A*) at its centre. Here, we investigate how the central black hole (BH) activity may affect the evolution of exoplanets in our Galaxy. Accreting BHs emit high-energy radiation – extreme ultraviolet and X-rays – which can lead to XUV photoevaporation of the planetary atmospheres. We evaluate the atmospheric mass-loss using both theoretical estimates of the BH radiative output and observational constraints on the past activity history of Sgr A*. The resulting mass-loss is analysed as a function of the galactocentric distance. For the first time, we compute the exoplanet atmospheric evolution under BH irradiation by explicitly including the temporal evolution of the central luminosity output (i.e. the BH activity history). We obtain that Sgr A* could have a major impact on exoplanets located in the inner region of the Galaxy (e.g. Galactic bulge); a significant fraction of the atmospheric mass can be removed by BH irradiation; and in extreme cases, the initial atmosphere may be completely stripped away. Such mass-loss can have important consequences on the atmospheric chemistry and potential biological evolution. We discuss the physical implications for planetary habitability, and we also briefly consider the case of stellar-mass BHs. The observation data of blazar 1ES 1426+42.8 were obtained using the 1.02 m optical telescope of Yunnan Observatories during 2021 to 2023. Intraday variability (IDV) is detected on seven nights. We use the turbulent model to investigate the mechanism of IDV in 1ES 1426+42.8. The fitting light curves match the actual IDV curves well. Using this model, we obtain the parameters such as the size of turbulent cells and the width of pulses in the jet. A possible short-lived quasi-periodic oscillation (QPO) of |$58.55 \pm 8.09$| min was detected on 2022 April 26 whose light curve exhibits eight cycles at |$\gt 3\sigma$| global significance and confirmed by several different techniques. Through a more detailed analysis of the light curve of this night, we find that the period is shortened from 54.23 min (⁠|$4\sigma$|⁠) to 29.71 min (⁠|$3\sigma$|⁠). We present new ALMA observations of CO, CN, CS, HCN, and HCO |$^{+}$| absorption seen against the bright and compact radio continuum sources of eight galaxies. Combined with archival observations, they reveal two distinct populations of molecular clouds, which we identify by combining CO emission and absorption profiles to unambiguously reveal each cloud's direction of motion and likely location. In galaxy discs, we see clouds with low velocity dispersions, low line-of-sight velocities, and a lack of any systemic inflow or outflow. In galactic cores, we find high velocity dispersion clouds inflowing at up to 550 km s−1. This provides observational evidence in favour of cold accretion on to galactic centres, which likely contributes to the fuelling of active galactic nuclei. We also see a wide range in the CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) ratios of the absorption lines. This is likely the combined effect of hierarchical substructure within the molecular clouds and continuum sources which vary in size with frequency. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding star formation in galaxies requires resolving the physical scale on which star formation often occurs: the scale of star clusters. We present a multiwavelength, eight-parsec resolution study of star formation in the circumnuclear star cluster and molecular gas rings of the early-type spiral NGC 1386. The cluster ring formed simultaneously ∼4 Myr ago. The clusters have similar properties in terms of mass and star formation rate, resembling those of H  ii regions in the Milky Way disc. The molecular CO gas resolves into long filaments, which define a secondary ring detached from the cluster ring. Most clusters are in CO voids. Their separation with respect to the CO filaments is reminiscent of that seen in galaxy spiral arms. By analogy, we propose that a density wave through the disc of this galaxy may have produced this gap in the central kpc. The CO filaments fragment into strings of dense, unresolved clouds with no evidence of a stellar counterpart. These clouds may be the sites of a future population of clusters in the ring. The free-fall time of these clouds, ∼10 Myr, is close to the orbital time of the CO ring. This coincidence could lead to a synchronous bursting ring, as is the case for the current ring. The inward spiralling morphology of the CO filaments and co-spatiality with equivalent kpc-scale dust filaments are suggestive of their role as matter carriers from the galaxy outskirts to feed the molecular ring and a moderately active nucleus. In theoretical models of galaxy evolution, black hole feedback is a necessary ingredient in order to explain the observed exponential decline in number density of massive galaxies. Most contemporary black hole feedback models in cosmological simulations rely on a constant radiative efficiency (usually |$\eta \sim 0.1$|⁠) at all black hole accretion rates. We present the obsidian subgrid model, a synthesis model for the spin-dependent radiative efficiencies of three physical accretion rate regimes, i.e. |$\eta = \eta (j, \dot{M}_\mathrm{acc})$|⁠ , for use in large-volume cosmological simulations. The three regimes include: an advection-dominated accretion flow (⁠|$\dot{M}_\mathrm{acc}\lt 0.03\, \dot{M}_\mathrm{Edd}$|⁠), a quasar-like mode (⁠|$0.03 \lt \dot{M}_\mathrm{acc}/ \dot{M}_\mathrm{Edd}\lt 0.3$|⁠), and a slim disc mode (⁠|$\dot{M}_\mathrm{acc}\gt 0.3\, \dot{M}_\mathrm{Edd}$|⁠). Additionally, we include a large-scale powerful jet at low accretion rates. The black hole feedback model we present is a kinetic model that prescribes mass loadings but could be used in thermal models directly using the radiative efficiency. We implement the obsidian model into the simba galaxy evolution model to determine if it is possible to reproduce galaxy populations successfully, and provide a first calibration for further study. Using a |$2\times 1024^3$| particle cosmological simulation in a |$(150\, \mathrm{cMpc})^3$| volume, we found that the model is successful in reproducing the galaxy stellar mass function, black hole mass–stellar mass relationship, and stellar mass–halo mass relationship. Reprocessed X-ray radiation from active galactic nuclei (AGN) carries important information about the properties of the circumnuclear material around the black hole. The X-ray photons travel from the very centre of the system and interact with that material often producing strong emission lines. The |$\rm {Fe\, K\alpha }$| Compton shoulder (CS) is formed by fluorescent |$\rm {Fe\, K\alpha }$| photons that perform Compton scatterings with the intercepting material and lose energy to form the distinct shoulder shape. In this work, we use the ray-tracing code RefleX to explore how the physical properties of the medium, as well as its geometry, affect the shape of the CS. We start by running simulations using a simple toroidal reflector, to test the effect of the metal composition, metallicity, column density, dust presence and velocity on the |$\rm {Fe\, K\alpha }$| line, and its CS. We confirm that the shape of the CS is sensitive to the optical depth of the intercepting medium, which can be regulated by either changing the metal composition or the line-of-sight column density of the circumnuclear material. Next, we create a series of models, which feature different geometrical configurations of dust and gas, and explore how the CS is affected by such configurations finding that components that can regulate the line-of-sight column density affect the |$\rm {Fe\, K\alpha }$| and its CS. Finally, we test whether observatories such as the recently launched XRISM and future Athena will make the CS a useful spectral feature of nearby AGN, by applying specific models on simulated spectra of the Circinus galaxy. The Fermi -LAT has detected more than 7000 |$\gamma$| -ray sources which show emission above 50 MeV of which more than half are associated with blazars. However, the Fourth Fermi -LAT catalogue (4FGL-DR4) lists 1625 of these as blazar candidates of uncertain type. Increasing the number of classified Fermi -LAT sources is important for improving our understanding of extragalactic |$\gamma$| -ray sources and can be used to search for new classes of very high energy sources. We report on the optical spectroscopy of twelve blazar candidates with hard photon indices included in the Third Catalogue of Hard Fermi -LAT Sources during 2016 and 2017 using the SAAO 1.9-m telescope. We classify all the sources observed as BL Lac objects, and determine the potential spectroscopic redshift for seven of them. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The jets of radio AGN provide one of the most important forms of active galactic nuclei (AGN) feedback, yet considerable uncertainties remain about how they are triggered. Since the molecular gas reservoirs of the host galaxies can supply key information about the dominant triggering mechanism(s), here we present Atacama Large Millimeter/sub-millimeter Array CO(1-0) observations of a complete sample of 29 powerful radio AGN (⁠|$P_{1.4\,{\rm GHz}} \gt 10^{25}$|  W Hz |$^{-1}$| and |$0.05 \lt z \lt 0.3$|⁠) with an angular resolution of about 2–3 arcsec (corresponding to 2–8 kpc). We detect molecular gas with masses in the range |$10^{8.9} \lt M_{{\rm H}_2} \lt 10^{10.2}$| M |$_\odot$| in the early-type host galaxies of ten targets, while for the other 19 sources, we derive upper limits. The detection rate of objects with such large molecular masses – |$34\pm 9$|  per cent – is higher than in the general population of non-active early-type galaxies (ETGs: |$\lt $| 10 per cent). The kinematics of the molecular gas are dominated in most cases by rotating disc-like structures, with diameters up to 25 kpc. Compared with the results for samples of quiescent ETG in the literature, we find a larger fraction of more massive, more extended and less settled molecular gas structures. In most of the CO-detected sources, the results are consistent with triggering of the AGN as the gas settles following a merger or close encounter with a gas-rich companion. However, in a minority of objects at the centres of rich clusters of galaxies, the accretion of gas cooling from the hot X-ray haloes is a plausible alternative to galaxy interactions as a triggering mechanism. SDSS J083942.11+380526.3 (⁠|$z=2.315$|⁠) is an iron low-ionization broad absorption lines quasar that exhibits visible Balmer absorption lines (H  |$\alpha$|⁠), implying a significant |$n=2$| population. The quasar also shows an array of absorption lines, including O  i , Ni  ii , Fe  ii , Mg  ii , Al  iii  to C  iv , and N v. The high-ionization absorption lines such as C  iv and Si  iv are revealed by slightly blueshifted broad absorption lines troughs. The resonance doublets such as Mg  ii and Al  iii are saturated but did not reached zero intensity which indicates that the broad-line region (BLR) is partially covered. Overall, however, the absorption is predominantly from low-ionization Fe  ii lines, emitted from ground and excited states up to at least 3.814 eV. This implies that the absorbing gas spans the hydrogen ionization front and extends into the partially ionized zone where neutral hydrogen is certainly present. Notably, the hydrogen line spectrum of the quasar shows no signature of expected Ly  |$\alpha$| absorption. Instead, the line spectrum shows an unusual Ly  |$\alpha$| emission characterized by a fully filled emission line spectrum which is a composite of a strong narrow core superposed on a weak broad base. Taking into account the effect of partial covering to BLR, we have extracted a strong Damped Ly α systems (DLA) trough in Ly  |$\alpha$| emission region. To fit the spectrum, we performed photoionized model calculations and compared them to the observations. We found that photoionization modelling using cloudy can successfully reproduce the main characteristics of the quasar spectrum, and the predicted neutral hydrogen column density arising from the clouds responsible for the low-ionization absorption provides a good match to the extracted DLA trough. This indicates that both the DLA and the low-ionization absorption arise from the same medium that is roughly collocated with the dusty torus. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

One of the most promising methods to measure the spin of an accreting black hole is fitting the broad iron K |$\alpha$| line in the X-ray spectrum. The line profile also depends on the geometry of the hard X-ray emitting corona. To put constraints on the black hole spin and corona geometry, it is essential to understand how do they affect the iron K |$\alpha$| line emissivity profile. In this work, we present calculations of the illumination and the iron K |$\alpha$| emissivity profiles performed with the Monte Carlo GR radiative transfer code monk. We focus on distinction between the illumination and emissivity profiles, which is in most previous studies neglected. We show that especially for the case of black hole X-ray binaries (BHXRBs), the difference is very large. For active galactic nuclei (AGNs), the emissivity profile has a more similar shape as the illumination profile, but it is notably steeper in the innermost region within a few gravitational radii. We find out that the different behaviour between AGN and BHXRB discs is due to the different energy spectra of the illuminating radiation. This suggests that the emissivity profile of the iron K |$\alpha$| line cannot be determined by black hole spin and corona geometry alone and the energy spectrum of the illuminating radiation has to be taken into account. In this work, we explore the connection of three jetted |$\gamma -$| loud AGNs classes: Compact steep-spectrum sources (CSS), Narrow-line Seyfert 1 (NLS1), and flat-spectrum radio quasars, through the modelling of the spectral energy distribution (SED). We selected two sources identified as CSS/NLS1 hybrids, PKS 2004-440 and 3C 286. Additionally, we included the source PKS 0440-00, initially classified as an FSRQ in the first Fermi -LAT catalogue, but recently reclassified as an NLS1. We present the results of their broadband SED modelling using a one-zone leptonic synchrotron-self Compton (SSC) + external Compton (EC) model. By exploring the parameter space and investigating the disc–jet connection in these sources, we analyse their classification in a model-dependent way. Our findings reveal that modeling PKS 2004-447 at relatively large angles, as expected for CSS, results in an SSC-dominated inverse Compton emission. In contrast, at low-observing angles, the inverse Compton emission is dominated by external photon fields. Both scenarios result in a jet with a low-radiative power. For 3C 286, we found that using a one-zone model limits the jet viewing angle to |$\sim 7^{\circ }$|⁠ , mainly due to its impact on the |$\gamma$| -ray emission. Our model results show a magnetically dominated jet, consistent with |$\gamma$| -CSS sources. Our results suggest that PKS 0440-00, can be classified as a powerful |$\gamma -$| NLS1, characterized by high accretion power and a jet dominated by bulk motion, similar to FSRQs. Broad absorption line (BAL) quasars are characterized by gas clouds that absorb flux at the wavelength of common quasar spectral features, although blueshifted by velocities that can exceed |$0.1c$|⁠. BAL features are interesting as signatures of significant feedback, yet they can also compromise cosmological studies with quasars by distorting the shape of the most prominent quasar emission lines, impacting redshift accuracy and measurements of the matter density distribution traced by the Lyman |$\alpha$| forest. We present a catalogue of BAL quasars discovered in the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) survey Early Data Release, which were observed as part of DESI Survey Validation, as well as the first two months of the main survey. We describe our method to automatically identify BAL quasars in DESI data, the quantities we measure for each BAL, and investigate the completeness and purity of this method with mock DESI observations. We mask the wavelengths of the BAL features and re-evaluate each BAL quasar redshift, finding new redshifts which are |$243\, {\rm km}\, {\rm s}^{-1}$| smaller on average for the BAL quasar sample. These new, more accurate redshifts are important to obtain the best measurements of quasar clustering, especially at small scales. Finally, we present some spectra of rarer classes of BALs that illustrate the potential of DESI data to identify such populations for further study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Polar dust has been discovered in a number of local active galactic nuclei (AGN), with radiation-driven torus models predicting a wind to be its main driver. However, little is known about its characteristics, spatial extent, or connection to the larger scale outflows. We present the first JWST /MIRI study aimed at imaging polar dust by zooming on to the centre of ESO 428-G14, part of the Galaxy Activity, Torus, and Outflow Survey (GATOS) survey of local AGN. We detect extended mid-infrared (MIR) emission within 200 pc from the nucleus. This polar structure is co-linear with a radio jet and lies perpendicular to a molecular gas lane that feeds and obscures the nucleus. Its morphology bears a striking resemblance to that of gas ionized by the AGN in the narrow-line region. We demonstrate that part of this spatial correspondence is due to contamination within the JWST filter bands from strong emission lines. Correcting for the contamination, we find the morphology of the dust continuum to be more compact, though still clearly extended out to |$r\approx 100 \, \rm pc$|⁠. We estimate the emitting dust has a temperature of |$\sim 120\, \rm K$|⁠. Using simple models, we find that the heating of small dust grains by the radiation from the central AGN and/or radiative jet-induced shocks is responsible for the extended MIR emission. Radiation-driven dusty winds from the torus is unlikely to be important. This has important implications for scales to which AGN winds can carry dust and dense gas out into their host galaxies. The gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies are a unique class of objects that launch powerful jets from relatively lower-mass black hole systems compared to the Blazars. However, the black hole masses estimated from the total flux spectrum suffer from the projection effect, making the mass measurement highly uncertain. The polarized spectrum provides a unique view of the central engine through scattered light. We performed spectropolarimetric observations of the gamma-ray emitting narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy 1H0323 + 342 using SPOL/MMT. The degree of polarization and polarization angle are 0.122 |$\pm$| 0.040 per cent and 142 |$\pm$| 9 degrees, while the H |$\alpha$| line is polarized at 0.265 |$\pm$| 0.280 per cent. We decomposed the total flux spectrum and estimated broad H |$\alpha$| full width at half maximum of 1015 km s |$^{-1}$| . The polarized flux spectrum shows a broadening similar to the total flux spectrum, with a broadening ratio of 1.22. The Monte Carlo radiative transfer code 'STOKES' applied to the data provides the best fit for a small viewing angle of 9–24 deg and a small optical depth ratio between the polar and the equatorial scatters. A thick broad-line region with significant scale height can explain a similar broadening of the polarized spectrum compared to the total flux spectrum with a small viewing angle. High precision mapping of H |$_{2}$| O megamaser emission from active galaxies has revealed more than a dozen Keplerian H |$_{2}$| O maser discs, which enable a |$\sim$| 4 per cent uncertainty estimate of the Hubble constant as well as providing accurate masses for the central black holes. These discs often have well-defined inner and outer boundaries of maser emission on sub-parsec scales. In order to better understand the physical conditions that determine the inner and outer radii of a maser disc, we examine the distributions of gas density and X-ray heating rate in a warped molecular disc described by a power-law surface density profile. For a suitable choice of the disc mass, we find that the outer radius |$R_{\rm out}$| of the maser disc predicted from our model can match the observed value, with |$R_{\rm out}$| mainly determined by the maximum heating rate or the minimum density for efficient maser action, depending on the combination of the Eddington ratio, black hole mass, and disc mass. Our analysis also indicates that the inner radius for maser action is comparable to the dust sublimation radius, suggesting that dust may play a role in determining the inner radius of a maser disc. Finally, our model predicts that H |$_{2}$| O gigamaser discs could exist at the centres of high-z quasars, with disc sizes of |$\gtrsim 10-30$| pc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We adopt a Bayesian X-ray spectral approach to investigate the accretion properties of unobscured (⁠|$20\lt \log (N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}\lt 22$|⁠) and obscured (⁠|$22\lt \log (N_{\rm H}/{\rm cm}^{-2}\lt 24$|⁠) active galactic nuclei (AGNs) to shed light on the orientation versus evolution scenarios for the origin of the obscuring material. For a sample of 3882 X-ray-selected AGN from the Chandra COSMOS Legacy, AEGIS, and CDFS extragalactic surveys, we constrain their stellar masses, |$M_\star$|⁠ , intrinsic X-ray luminosities, |$L_{\rm X}$|⁠ , obscuring column densities, |$N_{\rm H}$|⁠ , and specific accretion rates |$\lambda \propto L_{\rm X}/M_\star$|⁠. By combining these observables within a Bayesian non-parametric approach, we infer, for the first time, the specific accretion rate distribution (SARD) of obscured and unobscured AGN to |$z\approx 3$|⁠ , i.e. the probability of a galaxy with mass |$M_\star$| at redshift z hosting an AGN with column density |$N_{\rm H}$| and specific accretion rate |$\lambda$|⁠. Our findings indicate that (1) both obscured and unobscured SARDs share similar shapes, shifting towards higher accretion rates with redshift, (2) unobscured SARDs exhibit a systematic offset towards higher |$\lambda$| compared to obscured SARD for all redshift intervals, (3) the obscured AGN fraction declines sharply at |$\log \lambda _{\rm break} \sim -2$| for |$z \lt 0.5$|⁠ , but shifts to higher |$\lambda$| values with increasing redshift, (4) the incidence of AGN within the theoretically unstable blow-out region of the |$\lambda -N_{\rm H}$| plane increases with redshift. These observations provide compelling evidence for AGN 'downsizing' and radiation-regulated nuclear-scale obscuration with an increasing host galaxy contribution towards higher redshifts. Jetted active galactic nuclei (AGN) hosting extended photoionized nebulae provide us with a unique view of the timescales associated with AGN activity. Here, we present a new green bean galaxy at z = 0.304458 ± 0.000007 with large-scale jet-induced radio emission. The spectral energy distributions of the radio components show steep spectral indices (α = −0.85 to −0.92 for the extended regions, and α = −1.02 for the faint radio core), and spectral age modeling of the extended radio emission indicates that the lobes are >6 Myr old. It is unclear whether the jet is active, or is a remnant with an off-time of 2–3 Myr. Several detached clouds lie around the host galaxy up to 37.8 kpc away from the nucleus, and their ionization profile indicates a decline (∼2 dex) in the AGN ionizing photon production over the past ∼0.15 Myr. Furthermore, we measure a blueshift for one of the clouds that is spatially coincident with the path of the radio jet. The cloud is likely illuminated by the photoionizing AGN, and potentially underwent an interaction with the relativistic jet. Our multiwavelength analysis suggests that RGB1 was in a phase of jet production prior to the radiatively efficient accretion phase traced by the detached cloud emission. It is unclear whether RGB1 transitioned into a low-excitation radio galaxy or an inactive galaxy over the past ∼0.15 Myr, or whether the extended radio and optical emission trace distinct accretion phases that occurred in succession. We present the results of seven years of multicolour photometric monitoring of a sample of 31 |$\gamma$| -ray bright blazars using the RINGO3 polarimeter on the Liverpool Telescope from 2013–2020. We explore the relationships between simultaneous observations of flux in three optical wavebands along with Fermi |$\gamma$| -ray data in order to explore the radiation mechanisms and particle populations in blazar jets. We find significant correlations between optical and |$\gamma$| -ray flux with no detectable time lag, suggesting leptonic emission processes in the jets of these sources. Furthermore, we find the spectral behaviour against optical and |$\gamma$| -ray flux for many sources is best fit logarithmically. This is suggestive of a transition between bluer-/redder-when-brighter into stable-when-brighter behaviour during high activity states; a behaviour that might be missed in poorly sampled data, resulting in apparent linear relationships. Despite the evidence that supermassive black holes (SMBHs) co-evolve with their host galaxy, and that most of the growth of these SMBHs occurs via merger-free processes, the underlying mechanisms which drive this secular co-evolution are poorly understood. We investigate the role that both strong and weak large-scale galactic bars play in mediating this relationship. Using 48 871 disc galaxies in a volume-limited sample from Galaxy Zoo DESI, we analyse the active galactic nucleus (AGN) fraction in strongly barred, weakly barred, and unbarred galaxies up to |$z = 0.1$| over a range of stellar masses and colours. After controlling for stellar mass and colour, we find that the optically selected AGN fraction is |$31.6 \pm 0.9$| per cent in strongly barred galaxies, |$23.3 \pm 0.8$| per cent in weakly barred galaxies, and |$14.2 \pm 0.6$| per cent in unbarred disc galaxies. These are highly statistically robust results, strengthening the tantalizing results in earlier works. Strongly barred galaxies have a higher fraction of AGNs than weakly barred galaxies, which in turn have a higher fraction than unbarred galaxies. Thus, while bars are not required in order to grow an SMBH in a disc galaxy, large-scale galactic bars appear to facilitate AGN fuelling, and the presence of a strong bar makes a disc galaxy more than twice as likely to host an AGN than an unbarred galaxy at all galaxy stellar masses and colours. At optical/ultraviolet energies, blazars display an underlying thermal (unpolarized) contribution from the accretion disc, torus, and line-emitting regions, diluting the polarized emission from the jet-component. Optical polarimetry can be used to disentangle the thermal and non-thermal components, and place constraints on the particle populations and acceleration mechanisms responsible for the non-thermal emission. We present the results of a linear optical spectropolarimetric observing campaign of 18 blazars (six BL Lac-type objects and 12 flat-spectrum radio quasars) undertaken with the Southern African Large Telescope between 2016 and 2022. This was done to observe these systems during flaring states, as well as long-term monitoring of PKS1510-089, AP Lib, and PKS 1034-293. The observations traced the frequency dependence of the degree and angle of polarization, as well as changes in the spectral line strengths. We investigated possible correlations between the polarization and other observed characteristics for the sources. While an indication of correlation was found between the frequency dependence and the average level of polarization for some sources, a correlation was not found for the population as a whole. These results highlight that continuous observations and in-depth modelling of polarization and its frequency dependence is required to obtain a more holistic view of TeV blazars. We present a systematic study of mid-infrared spectra of galaxies including star-forming galaxies and active galactic nuclei observed with JWST MIRI-MRS and NIRSpec-IFU. We focus on the relative variations of the 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 11.3, 12.7, and 17 |$\mu$| m polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) features within spatially resolved regions of galaxies including NGC 3256, NGC 7469, VV 114, II Zw96, and NGC 5728. Using theoretical PAH models and extending our earlier work, we introduce a new PAH diagnostic involving the 17 |$\mu$| m PAH feature. To determine the drivers of PAH band variations in galaxies, we compare observed PAH spectral bands to predictions from theoretical PAH models. We consider extinction, dehydrogenation, and PAH size and charge as possible drivers of PAH band variations. We find a surprising uniformity in PAH size distribution among the spatially resolved regions of the galaxies studied here, with no evidence for preferential destruction of the smallest grains, contrary to earlier findings. Neither extinction nor dehydrogenation play a crucial role in setting the observed PAH bands. Instead, we find that PAH charge plays a significant role in PAH inter-band variations. We find a tight relation between PAH charge and the intensity of the radiation field as traced by the [Ne  iii ] |$/$| [Ne  ii ] maps. In agreement with recent JWST results, we find a predominance of neutral PAH molecules in the nuclei of active galaxies and their outflows. Ionized PAHs are the dominant population in star-forming galaxies. We discuss the implications of our findings for the use of PAHs as ISM tracers in high redshift galaxies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Mature radio galaxies such as M87 belong to a specific subclass of active galaxies (AGN) whose evolution in time endows them with five distinguishing characteristics, including (1) low excitation emission, (2) low star formation rates, (3) high bulge stellar-velocity dispersion, (4) bright stellar nuclei, and (5) weak or nonexistent merger signatures. We show how to understand these seemingly disparate characteristics as originating from the time evolution of powerful radio quasars and describe a new model prediction that tilted accretion disks in AGN are expected to occur in bright quasars but not in other subclasses of AGN. The picture we present should be understood as the most compelling evidence for counter-rotation as a key element in feedback from accreting black holes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Odd radio circles (ORCs) are mysterious rings of faint, diffuse emission recently discovered in radio surveys, some of which may be associated with galaxies in relatively dense environments. We propose that such ORCs are synchrotron emission from remnants of explosive galactic outflows, calling them OGREs, and discuss their broad-band non-thermal emission and evolution. We posit that a large amount of energy was ejected from the central galaxy in the past, creating an outgoing shock that accelerates cosmic rays. Assuming plausible values for the density, temperature and magnetic field of the ambient medium, consistency with the observed spectral index, size, and power of the ORCs requires the energy to be as high as ∼1060 erg, suggesting that their sources could be active galactic nuclei. We calculate the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the OGREs and their evolution, including synchrotron, inverse Compton (IC), and bremsstrahlung emission from electrons, and pion-decay emission from protons. We find that the SEDs of the younger OGREs are not greatly different from those of older ones currently observable as ORCs if radiative cooling of electrons is effective. As such younger OGREs are expected to be rarer and smaller, they may not be readily observable. However, if radiative cooling of electrons is ineffective, younger OGREs may be detectable in X-rays. The nature of the interaction between active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and their host galaxies remains an unsolved question. Therefore, conducting an AGN census is valuable for AGN research. Nevertheless, a significant fraction of AGNs are obscured by their environment, which blocks UV and optical emissions due to the dusty torus surrounding the central supermassive black hole (SMBH). To overcome this challenge, mid-infrared (IR) surveys have emerged as a valuable tool for identifying obscured AGNs, as the obscured light is re-emitted in this range. With its high sensitivity, the JWST uncovered more fainter objects than previous telescopes. By applying the SED fitting, this work investigates AGN candidates in JWST Cosmic Evolution Early Release Science (CEERS) fields. We identified 42 candidates; 30 of them are classified as composites (⁠|$0.2\le f_{\text{AGN, IR}} < 0.5$|⁠), and 12 of them are AGNs (⁠|$f_{\text{AGN, IR}}\ge 0.5$|⁠). We report the AGN luminosity contributions and AGN number fractions as a function of redshift and total infrared luminosity, showing that previously reported increasing relations are not apparent in our sample due to the sample size. We also extend the previous results on ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs, |$L_{\rm TIR}\ge 10^{12} L_{\odot }$|⁠) to less luminous AGNs, highlighting the power of JWST. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radio galaxies harbouring jetted active galactic nuclei are a frequent target of very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) because they play an essential role in our exploration of how jets form and propagate. Hence, only a few have not yet been detected with VLBI; Fornax A was one of the most famous examples. Here we present the first detection of the compact core region of Fornax A with VLBI. At 8.4 GHz the faint core is consistent with an unresolved point source. We constrained its flux density to be S0 = 47.5 − 62.3 mJy and its diameter to be D0min ≤ 70 μas. The high values of the measured brightness temperature (TB ≳ 1011 K) imply that the observed radiation is of non-thermal origin, likely associated with the synchrotron emission from the active galactic nucleus. We also investigated the possibility of a second radio source being present within the field of view. Adding a second Gaussian component to the geometrical model fit does not significantly improve the quality of the fit, and we therefore, conclude that our detection corresponds to the compact core of Fornax A. Analysis of the non-trivial closure phases provides evidence for the detection of a more extended flux density, on the angular scale of ∼4000 μas. Finally, the fractional circular polarisation of the core is consistent with zero, with a conservative upper limit being mcirc ≤ 4%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present Very Long Baseline Array observations of radio continuum and OH line emission toward the OH megamaser (OHM) galaxy IRAS 01298−0744. We recover over 82% of the OH line emission seen in single-dish observations, including multiple strong OH line components and the broad shallow line profile spanning over 1000 km s−1. The OH emission spatially has four compact components, as well as diffuse emission, and the 3σ signals are distributed in a rectangular region with size of ∼40 × 30 mas. The spatial-velocity structure is complex and is consistent with that from HCN and HCO+ lines in the literature, indicating that the nuclear region of this source is likely still in the merging process characterized by intense nuclear activities. The multiple strong OH peaks are blue-shifted compared to dense millimetre-wave molecular gas tracers, but similar to optical Na I absorption. This suggests that the compact masers might be in an outflow driven by an active galactic nucleus or starburst. We have detected compact radio continuum emissions adjacent to the maser positions with a brightness temperature of around 3 × 106 K, similar to other OHM galaxies with very-long-baseline interferometry observations in the literature, which is consistent with a starburst origin. Aims. We present a novel method for detecting outliers in astronomical time series based on the combination of a deep neural network and a k-nearest neighbor algorithm with the aim of identifying and removing problematic epochs in the light curves of astronomical objects. Methods. We used an EfficientNet network pretrained on ImageNet as a feature extractor and performed a k-nearest neighbor search in the resulting feature space to measure the distance from the first neighbor for each image. If the distance was above the one obtained for a stacked image, we flagged the image as a potential outlier. Results. We applied our method to a time series obtained from the VLT Survey Telescope monitoring campaign of the Deep Drilling Fields of the Vera C. Rubin Legacy Survey of Space and Time. We show that our method can effectively identify and remove artifacts from the VST time series and improve the quality and reliability of the data. This approach may prove very useful in light of the amount of data that will be provided by the LSST, which will prevent the inspection of individual light curves. We investigated the prevalence of giant radio galaxies (GRGs), some of the largest structures powered by supermassive black holes, within supercluster environments, and the influence of such environments on their properties. Utilising two large catalogues of superclusters (401) and GRGs (1446), we established the existence of 77 GRGs (5.3%) residing in 64 superclusters (16%) within 0.05 ≤ z ≤ 0.42. Among the 77 GRGs found in superclusters, we identified ∼70% as residing within galaxy clusters. Within the subset of GRGs not located in superclusters, which constitutes 94.7% of the sample, a mere 21% are associated with galaxy clusters, while the remaining majority are situated in sparser environments. We examined the influence of differing environments, such as cluster versus non-cluster and supercluster versus non-supercluster regions, on the size of GRGs, while also exploring the driving factors behind their overall growth. Our findings show that the largest GRGs (≳3 Mpc) grow in underdense environments beyond the confines of dense environments. Moreover, we show that ∼24% of 1446 GRGs reside in galaxy clusters. We conclude that GRGs preferentially grow in sparser regions of the cosmic web and have a significantly larger median size. Finally, we demonstrate the potential of GRGs as astrophysical probes with specific cases where GRGs, exhibiting polarised emissions and located behind superclusters (acting as natural Faraday screens), were used to estimate magnetic field strengths of the supercluster environment at sub-microgauss levels. Aims. During the Spectrum Roentgen Gamma (SRG)/eROSITA all-sky surveys, X-ray sources close to the South Ecliptic Pole (SEP) are observed almost every 4 h. We aim to identify the sources exhibiting the most significant long-term X-ray variability within 3° of the SEP in the first three surveys, and investigate their properties. Methods. We determined the variability significance of ~104 sources observed by eROSITA within 3° of the SEP by using thresholds on the Bayesian excess variance (SCATT_LO) and the maximum amplitude deviation (AMPL_SIG). Sources exhibiting a variability significance above 3σ were subdivided into likely Galactic and extragalactic sources, by using spectral and photometric information of their optical counterparts. We quantified the X-ray normalised excess variances of all variable sources, and also calculated the periodograms of the brightest ones. Results. Out of more than 104 X-ray sources detected by eROSITA within 3° of the SEP, we identified 453 that exhibit significant X-ray variability. SCATT_LO is significantly more sensitive to detecting variable sources in this field, but AMPL_SIG helps to provide a more complete variability sample. Of those variable sources, 168 were classified as likely extragalactic, and 235 as likely Galactic. The periodograms of most bright and variable extragalactic sources are approximately described by an aliased power law (P ∞ ν−α) with an index of α ≈ 1. We identified a potential tidal disruption event, and long-term transient sources. The stellar X-ray variability was predominantly caused by bright X-ray flares from coronally active stars. Context. Evolutionary models suggest that the initial growth phases of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and their central supermassive black holes (SMBHs) are dust-enshrouded and characterised by jet or wind outflows that should gradually clear the interstellar medium (ISM) in the host by heating and/or expelling the surrounding gas. eFEDSJ091157.4+014327 (z ∼ 0.6) was selected from X-ray samples of eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) for its characteristics: red colours, X-ray obscuration (NH = 2.7 × 1022 cm−2) and luminous (LX = 6.5 × 1044 erg s−1), similar to those expected in quasars with outflows. It hosts an ionised outflow as revealed by a broad [O III]λ5007 Å emission line in the SDSS integrated spectrum. For a proper characterisation of the outflow properties and their effects, we need spatially resolved information. Aims. We aim to explore the environment around the red quasar, morphology of the [O III] gas and characterise the kinematics, mass outflow rates and energetics within the system. Methods. We used spatially resolved spectroscopic data from Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE) with an average seeing of 0.6″ to construct flux, velocity and velocity dispersion maps. Thanks to the spatially resolved [O III]λ5007 Å emission detected, we provide insights into the morphology and kinematics of the ionised gas and better estimates of the outflow properties. Results. We find that the quasar is embedded in an interacting and merging system with three other galaxies ∼50 kpc from its nucleus. Spatially resolved kinematics reveal that the quasar has extended ionised outflows of up to 9.2−0.4+1.2 kpc with positive and negative velocities up to 1000 km s−1 and −1200 km s−1, respectively. The velocity dispersion (W80) ranges from 600–1800 km s−1. We associate the presence of high-velocity components with the outflow. The total mass outflow rate is estimated to be ∼10 M⊙ yr−1, a factor of ∼3–7 higher than the previous findings for the same target and kinetic power of 2 × 1042 erg s−1. Considering different AGN bolometric luminosities, the kinetic coupling efficiencies range from 0.01%–0.03% and the momentum boosts are ∼0.2. Conclusions. The kinetic coupling efficiency values are low, which indicates that the ionised outflow is not energetically relevant. These values don't align with the theoretical predictions of both radiation-pressure-driven outflows and energy-conserving mechanisms. However, note that our results are based only on the ionised phase while theoretical predictions are multi-phase. Moreover, the mass loading factor of ∼5 is an indication that these outflows are more likely AGN-driven than star formation-driven. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the impact of black hole nuclear activity on both the global and radial star formation rate (SFR) profiles in X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGN) in the field of miniJPAS, the precursor of the much wider J-PAS project. Our sample includes 32 AGN with z < 0.3 detected via the XMM-Newton and Chandra surveys. For comparison, we assembled a control sample of 71 star-forming (SF) galaxies with similar magnitudes, sizes, and redshifts. To derive the global properties of both the AGN and the control SF sample, we used CIGALE to fit the spectral energy distributions derived from the 56 narrowband and 4 broadband filters from miniJPAS. We find that AGN tend to reside in more massive galaxies than their SF counterparts. After matching samples based on stellar mass and comparing their SFRs and specific SFRs (sSFRs), no significant differences appear. This suggests that the presence of AGN does not strongly influence overall star formation. However, when we used miniJPAS as an integral field unit (IFU) to dissect galaxies along their position angle, a different picture emerges. We find that AGN tend to be more centrally concentrated in mass with respect to SF galaxies. Moreover, we find a suppression of the sSFR up to 1Re and then an enhancement beyond 1Re, strongly contrasting with the decreasing radial profile of sSFRs in SF galaxies. This could point to an inside-out quenching of AGN host galaxies. Additionally, we examined how the radial profiles of the sSFRs in AGN and SF galaxies depend on galaxy morphology, by dividing our sample into disk-dominated (DD), pseudo-bulge (PB), and bulge-dominated (BD) systems. In DD systems, AGN exhibit a flat sSFR profile in the central regions and enhanced star formation beyond 1Re, contrasting with SF galaxies. In PB systems, SF galaxies show a decreasing sSFR profile, while AGN hosts exhibit an inside-out quenching scenario. In BD systems, both populations demonstrate consistent flat sSFR profiles. These findings suggest that the reason we do not see differences on a global scale is because star formation is suppressed in the central regions and enhanced in the outer regions of AGN host galaxies. We present ALMA band-7 observations of J2057−0030, a multi-component merger system at z ∼ 4.68 spanning at least 50 kpc in size, using the [CII] λ157.74 μm line and underlying far-infrared (FIR) continuum. We find two main components, the quasar (or QSO) and a dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG), both detected in [CII] and continuum emission as well as multiple neighboring clumps detected only in [CII]. Three of these clumps form a (tidal) tail that extends from the QSO in a straight direction to the west, covering a projected distance of ∼10 kpc. This perturbed morphology, added to a spatial distance of ∼20 kpc and a velocity offset of Δv = 68 km s−1 between the QSO and the DSFG, strongly supports a merging scenario. By fitting a spectral energy distribution model to the continuum data, we estimate star formation rates of ≈402 M⊙ yr−1 for the QSO host and ≈244 M⊙ yr−1 for the DSFG, which locate them on or close to the main sequence of star-forming galaxies. The J2057−0030 QSO was selected for being one of the brightest unobscured quasars at its redshift while presenting a rather modest star formation rate. Based on a commonly accepted paradigm regarding the formation of quasars, this result is expected for a quasar that has already passed an obscured phase of rapid star formation during a major merger. However, we see that the merger event in this system is far from being finished, and it is rather likely somewhere between the first pericenter and subsequent close passages. The realtime program for high-energy neutrino track events detected by the IceCube South Pole Neutrino Observatory releases alerts to the astronomical community with the goal of identifying electromagnetic counterparts to astrophysical neutrinos. Gamma-ray observations from the Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) enabled the identification of the flaring gamma-ray blazar TXS 0506+056 as a likely counterpart to the neutrino event IC-170922A. By continuously monitoring the gamma-ray sky, Fermi-LAT plays a key role in the identification of candidate counterparts to realtime neutrino alerts. In this paper, we present the Fermi-LAT strategy for following up high-energy neutrino alerts applied to seven years of IceCube data. Right after receiving an alert, a search is performed in order to identify gamma-ray activity from known and newly detected sources that are positionally consistent with the neutrino localization. In this work, we study the population of blazars found in coincidence with high-energy neutrinos and compare them to the full population of gamma-ray blazars detected by Fermi-LAT. We also evaluate the relationship between the neutrino and gamma-ray luminosities, finding different trends between the two blazar classes BL Lacs and flat-spectrum radio quasars. The optical spectroscopic classification of active galactic nuclei (AGN) into type 1 and type 2 can be understood in the frame of the AGN unification models. However, it remains unclear which physical properties are driving the classification into intermediate sub-types (1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.8, 1.9). To shed light on this issue, we present an analysis of the effect of extinction and AGN and host galaxy luminosities on sub-type determination for a sample of 159 X-ray selected AGN with a complete and robust optical spectroscopic classification. The sample spans a rest-frame 2–10 keV X-ray luminosity range of 1042–1046 erg s−1 and redshifts between 0.05 and 0.75. From the fitting of their ultraviolet-to-mid-infrared spectral energy distributions, we extracted the observed AGN over total AGN+galaxy contrast, optical/ultraviolet line-of-sight extinction, as well as host galaxy and AGN luminosities. The observed contrast exhibits a clear decline with sub-type, distinguishing two main groups: 1.0–5 and 1.8–2. This difference is partly driven by an increase in extinction following the same trend. Nevertheless, 50% of 1.9s and 2s lack sufficient extinction to explain the lack of detection of broad emission lines, unveiling the necessity of an additional effect. Our findings show that 1.8–2s preferentially live in host galaxies with higher luminosities while displaying similar intrinsic AGN luminosities to 1.0–5s. Consequently, the AGN to host galaxy luminosity ratio diminishes, hindering the detection of the emission of the broad emission lines, resulting in the 1.8–2 classification of those with insufficient extinction. Thus, the combination of increasing extinction and decreasing AGN over galaxy luminosity ratio, mainly driven by an increasing host galaxy luminosity, constitutes the main reasons behind the sub-type classification into 1.0–5 and 1.8–2. A characteristic feature of quasars is the observed non-linear relationship between their monochromatic luminosities at rest-frame 2500 Å and 2 keV. This relationship is evident across all redshifts and luminosities and, due to its non-linearity, can be implemented to estimate quasar distances and construct a Hubble Diagram for quasars. Historically, a significant challenge in the cosmological application of this relation has been its high observed dispersion. Recent studies have demonstrated that this dispersion can be reduced by excluding biased objects from the sample. Nevertheless, the dispersion remains considerable (δ ∼ 0.20 dex), especially when compared to the Phillips relation for supernovae Ia. Given the absence of a comprehensive physical model for the relation, it remains unclear how much of the remaining dispersion is tied to the physical mechanism behind the relation itself and how much can be attributed to other factors, not addressed by the sample selection and by the choice of X-ray and UV indicators. Potential contributing factors include (i) the scatter produced by using X-ray photometric results instead of spectroscopic ones, (ii) the intrinsic variability of quasars, and (iii) the inclination of the accretion disc relative to our line of sight. In this study, we thoroughly examine these three factors and quantify their individual contributions to the observed dispersion. Based on our findings, we argue that the characteristic dispersion of the X-ray–UV luminosity relationship (which is attributable to the physical mechanism behind it) is likely below 0.06 dex. This result reinforces the validity of using quasars as standard candles and offers valuable insights for developing physical models of the X-ray/UV relation. Achieving such a low dispersion on large observed data sets is hardly feasible, due to the complexity of removing all the empirical contributions to the scatter. Nevertheless, we argue that high-redshift subsamples can show a significantly lower dispersion than the average subsample. This aspect is particularly significant for cosmological applications, indicating that targeted observations of select high-redshift objects can enhance the cosmological power of quasars in constraining the shape of the Hubble Diagram at high redshift. We present the results of a joint XMM-Newton and NuSTAR campaign on the active galactic nucleus (AGN) IC 4329A, consisting of 9 × 20 ks XMM-Newton observations, and 5 × 20 ks NuSTAR observations within nine days, performed in August 2021. Within each observation, the AGN is not very variable, and the fractional variability never exceeds 5%. Flux variations are observed between the different observations on timescales of days, with a ratio of 30% of the minimum and maximum 2–10 keV flux. These variations follow the softer-when-brighter behavior typically observed in AGN. In all observations, a soft excess is clearly present. Consistently with previous observations, the X-ray spectra of the source exhibit a cutoff energy between 140 and 250 keV that is constant within the error in the different observations. We detected a prominent component of the 6.4 keV Fe Kα line consistent with being constant during the monitoring, consisting of an unresolved narrow core and a broader component likely originating in the inner accredion disk. We find that the reflection component is weak (Rmax = 0.009 ± 0.002) and most likely originates in distant neutral medium. We also found a warm absorber component together with an ultrafast outflow. Their energetics show that these outflows have enough mechanical power for significant feedback on the environment of the AGN. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We present the Bidimensional Exploration of the warm-Temperature Ionised gaS (BETIS) project, designed for the spatial and spectral study of the diffuse ionised gas (DIG) in a selection of nearby spiral galaxies observed with the MUSE integral-field spectrograph. Our primary objective is to investigate the various ionisation mechanisms at play within the DIG. We analysed the distribution of high- and low-ionisation species in the optical spectra of the sample on a spatially resolved basis. We introduced a new methodology for spectroscopically defining the DIG, optimised for galaxies of different resolutions. Firstly, we employed an innovative adaptive binning technique on the observed datacube based on the spectroscopic signal-to-noise ratio (S/N) of the collisional [S II] line to increase the S/N of the rest of the lines including [O III], [O I], and He I. Subsequently, we created a DIG mask by eliminating the emissions associated with both bright and faint H II regions. We also examined the suitability of using Hα equivalent width (EWHα) as a proxy for defining the DIG and its associated ionisation regime. Notably, for EWHα < 3 Å – the expected emission from hot low-mass evolved stars (HOLMES) – the measured value is contingent on the chosen population synthesis technique performed. Our analysis of the showcase sample reveals a consistent cumulative DIG fraction across all galaxies in the sample, averaging around 40%–70%. The average radial distribution of the [N II]/Hα, [S II]/Hα, [O I]/Hα, and [O III]/Hβ ratios are enhanced in the DIG regimes (up to 0.2 dex). It follows similar trends between the DIG regime and the H II regions, as well as the Hα surface brightness (ΣHα), indicating a correlation between the ionisation of these species in both the DIG and the H II regions. The DIG loci in typical diagnostic diagrams are found, in general, within the line ratios that correspond to photoionisation due to the star formation. There is a noticeable offset correspondent to ionisation due to fast shocks. However, an individual diagnosis performed for each galaxy reveals that all the DIG in these galaxies can be attributed to photoionisation from star formation. The offset is primarily due to the contribution of Seyfert galaxies in our sample, which is closely aligned with models of ionisation from fast shocks and galactic outflows, thus mimicking the DIG emission. Our results indicate that galaxies exhibiting active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity should be considered separately when conducting a general analysis of the DIG ionisation mechanisms, since this emission is indistinguishable from high-excitation DIG. Context. In the supermassive black hole (SMBH)-galaxy coevolution scenario, heavily obscured active galactic nuclei (AGN) represent a fundamental phase of SMBH growth during which most of the BH mass is accreted and the scaling relations with the host galaxy are set. Obscured nuclei are thought to constitute a major fraction of the whole AGN population, but their statistics and evolution across cosmic time are still highly uncertain. Therefore, it is pivotal to identify new ways to detect this vast and hidden population of growing SMBHs. A promising way to select heavily obscured AGN is through radio emission, which is largely unaffected by obscuration and can be used as a proxy for nuclear activity. Aims. In this work, we study the AGN radio detection effectiveness in the major deep extragalactic surveys, considering different AGN obscuration levels, redshift, and AGN bolometric luminosities. We particularly focus on comparing their radio and X-ray detectability, making predictions for present and future radio surveys. Methods. We extrapolated the predictions of the AGN population synthesis model of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) to the radio band, by deriving the 1.4 GHz luminosity functions of unobscured (i.e., with hydrogen column densities log NH < 22), obscured (22 < log NH < 24), and Compton-thick (CTK, log NH > 24) AGN. We then used these functions to forecast the number of detectable AGN based on the area, flux limit, and completeness of a given radio survey and compare it with the AGN number resulting from X-ray predictions. Results. When applied to deep extragalactic fields covered both by radio and X-ray observations, we show that, while X-ray selection is generally more effective in detecting unobscured AGN, the surface density of CTK AGN radio detected is on average ten times larger than the X-ray one, and even greater at high redshifts, considering the current surveys and facilities. Our results suggest that thousands of CTK AGN are already present in current radio catalogs, but most of them escaped any detection in the corresponding X-ray observations. We also present expectations for the number of AGN to be detected by the Square Kilometer Array Observatory (SKAO) in its future deep and wide radio continuum surveys, finding that it will be able to detect more than 2000 AGN at z > 6 and tens of them at z > 10, more than half of which are expected to be CTK. Context. Blazar flares provide a window onto the extreme physical processes occurring in relativistic outflows. Most numerical codes used for modelling blazar emission during flares use a simplified continuous-loss description of particle cooling due to the inverse Compton (IC) process, neglecting non-continuous (discrete) effects that arise in the Klein–Nishina (KN) regime. The significance of such effects has not yet been explored in detail. Aims. In this study, we investigate the importance of non-continuous Compton cooling losses and their impact on the electron spectrum and spectral energy distribution (SED) of blazars during high flux states (flares), as well as in the low state. Methods. We solve the full transport equation numerically, accounting for large relative jumps in energy by extending our existing blazar flare modelling code EMBLEM. We perform a detailed physical modelling of the brightest γ-ray flare of the archetypal flat-spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) 3C 279 detected in June 2015. We then compare results obtained using the full cooling term and using the continuous-loss approximation. Results. We show that during flaring states of FSRQs characterised by high Compton dominance, the non-continuous cooling can lead to significant modification of the electron spectrum, introducing a range of distinct features, such as low-energy tails, hardening and/or softening, narrow and extended particle excesses, and shifts in the cooling break position. Such distortion translates to differences in the associated SED of up to ∼50%. This highlights the importance of non-continuous effects and the need to consider them in blazar emission models, particularly applied to extreme γ-ray flares. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Radio-mode feedback associated with the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at the cores of galaxy clusters injects a large amount of energy into the intracluster medium (ICM), offsetting radiative losses through X-ray emission. This mechanism prevents the ICM from rapidly cooling down and fueling extreme starburst activity as it accretes onto the central galaxies, and it is therefore a key ingredient in the evolution of galaxy clusters. However, the influence and mode of feedback at high redshifts (z ∼ 1) remains largely unknown. Low-frequency sub-arcsecond-resolution radio observations taken with the International LOFAR Telescope have demonstrated their ability to assist X-ray observations with constraining the energy output from the AGNs (or "cavity power") in galaxy clusters, thereby enabling research at higher redshifts than before. In this pilot project, we tested this hybrid method on a high-redshift (0.6 < z < 1.3) sample of 13 galaxy clusters for the first time with the aim of verifying the performance of this method at these redshifts and providing the first estimates of the cavity power associated with the central AGN for a sample of distant clusters. We were able to detect clear radio lobes in three out of 13 galaxy clusters at redshifts of 0.7 < z < 0.9, and we used these detections in combination with ICM pressures surrounding the radio lobes obtained from standard profiles to calculate the corresponding cavity powers of the AGNs. Combining our results with the literature, the current data appear to suggest that the average cavity power peaked at a redshift of z ∼ 0.4 and slowly decreases toward higher redshifts. However, we require more and tighter constraints on the cavity volume and a better understanding of our observational systematics to confirm any deviation of the cavity power trend from a constant level. Lensed quasars are powerful cosmic laboratories; they are used to simultaneously probe various astrophysical phenomena. Microlensing by stars within distant galaxies acts as strong gravitational lenses of multiply imaged quasars, and provides a unique and direct measurement of the lensed quasar internal structure. Microlensing of the continuum emitting region as well as the broad-line region (BLR) is well characterized by four observable indices, μcont, μBLR, WCI (wing-core), and RBI (red-blue), measured directly from the spectra. During the 2004−2007 monitoring period, image A of the quadruply lensed system Q2237+0305 underwent a strong microlensing amplification, while image D remained unaffected. We used 35 epochs of archival spectrophotometric data of Q2237+0305 obtained with the Very Large Telescope of the European Southern Observatory to develop an independent microlensing method for estimating the geometry and size of the BLR. We measured the index time series for the C IV line and the continuum emission at 1450 Å. We built a library of the simulated microlensing index time series that reproduce the observed times series based on three representative BLR models: Keplerian disk (KD), polar wind (PW), and equatorial wind (EW). After sampling the model parameter space, we find that KD is the predominant model, while PW and EW are less likely. We infer that the system is viewed at an intermediate viewing angle i ∼ 35°, and we estimate the most likely C IV BLR half-light radius r1/2 = 51 ± 23 light days. Our results are in good agreement with previous findings in the literature and extend the validity of the index-based approach to a temporal domain. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Context. A sub-population of AGNs where the central engine is obscured are known as type II quasars (QSO2s). These luminous AGNs have a thick and dusty torus that obscures the accretion disc from our line of sight. Thus, their special orientation allows for detailed studies of the AGN-host co-evolution. Increasing the sample size of QSO2 sources in critical redshift ranges is crucial for understanding the interplay of AGN feedback, the AGN-host relationship, and the evolution of active galaxies. Aims. We aim to identify QSO2 candidates in the 'redshift desert' using optical and infrared photometry. At this intermediate redshift range (i.e. 1 ≤ ɀ ≤ 2), most of the prominent optical emission lines in QSO2 sources (e.g. CIVλl549; [OIII]λλ4959, 5008) fall either outside the wavelength range of the SDSS optical spectra or in particularly noisy wavelength ranges, making QSO2 identification challenging. Therefore, we adopted a semi-supervised machine learning approach to select candidates in the SDSS galaxy sample. Methods. Recent applications of machine learning in astronomy focus on problems involving large data sets, with small data sets often being overlooked. We developed a 'few-shot' learning approach for the identification and classification of rare-object classes using limited training data (200 sources). The new AMELIA pipeline uses a transfer-learning based approach with decision trees, distance-based, and deep learning methods to build a classifier capable of identifying rare objects on the basis of an observational training data set. Results. We validated the performance of AMELIA by addressing the problem of identifying QSO2s at 1 ≤ ɀ ≤ 2 using SDSS and WISE photometry, obtaining an F1-score above 0.8 in a supervised approach. We then used AMELIA to select new QSO2 candidates in the 'redshift desert' and examined the nature of the candidates using SDSS spectra, when available. In particular, we identified a sub-population of [NeV]λ3426 emitters at ɀ ~ 1.1, which are highly likely to contain obscured AGNs. We used X-ray and radio crossmatching to validate our classification and investigated the performance of photometric criteria from the literature showing that our candidates have an inherent dusty nature. Finally, we derived physical properties for our QSO2 sample using photoionisation models and verified the AGN classification using an SED fitting. Conclusions. Our results demonstrate the potential of few-shot learning applied to small data sets of rare objects, in particular QSO2s, and confirms that optical-IR information can be further explored to search for obscured AGNs.
