Antarctic krill is a key species in the Southern Ocean and subject to the most extensive fishery in the Antarctic. The Norwegian Institute of Marine Research has conducted acoustic-trawl monitoring of krill off the South Orkneys annually since 2011 in collaboration with the krill fishing industry. Average krill biomass within the 60000 km2 survey area ranged from 1.4 to 7.8 million tonnes in the period 2011–2020, strongly supporting that this is among the regions in the Scotia Sea with consistently highest krill densities. There were no significant (p  ≈ 0.18, non-parametric Mann–Kendall test) monotonic trends in estimated krill biomass over the 10 years. The highest krill densities were associated with the shelf edge and submarine canyons on the north side of the South Orkneys. Our comparison with the CCAMLR 9.3% reference exploitation rate suggests that management of the krill fishery in the South Orkneys region is precautionary. The monitoring is run on fishing vessels, so e.g. acoustic frequencies applied could not always be in compliance with the standard CCAMLR methodology. Estimated deviance in krill backscatter when comparing 38 kHz to the standard 120 kHz ranged from −1.1% to 12.8%. Generating biomass-at-age indices for fisheries stock assessments with acoustic data collected by uncrewed surface vessels (USVs) has been hampered by the need to resolve acoustic backscatter with contemporaneous biological (e.g., age) composition data. To address this limitation, Pacific hake (Merluccius productus; “hake”) acoustic data were gathered from a USV survey (in 2019) and acoustic-trawl survey (ATS; 2019 and eight previous years), and biological data were gathered from fishery-dependent and non-target (i.e., not specifically targeting hake) fishery-independent sources (2019 and eight previous years). To overcome the lack of contemporaneous biological sampling in the USV survey, age class compositions were estimated from a generalized linear mixed spatio-temporal model (STM) fit to the fishery-dependent and non-target fishery-independent data. The validity of the STM age composition estimation procedure was assessed by comparing estimates to age compositions from the ATS in each year. Hake biomass-at-age was estimated from all combinations of acoustics (USV or ATS in 2019, ATS only in other years) and age composition information (STM or ATS in all years). Across the survey area, proportional age class compositions derived from the best STM differed from ATS observations by 0.09 on average in 2019 (median relative error (MRE): 19.45%) and 0.14 across all years (MRE: 79.03%). In data-rich areas (i.e., areas with regular fishery operations), proportional age class compositions from the STM differed from ATS observations by 0.03 on average in 2019 (MRE: 11.46%) and 0.09 across years (MRE: 54.96%). On average, total biomass estimates derived using STM age compositions differed from ATS age composition-based estimates by approximately 7% across the study period (~ 3% in 2019) given the same source of acoustic data. When biomass estimates from different sources of acoustic data (USV or ATS) were compared given the same source of age composition data, differences were nearly ten-fold greater (22% or 27%, depending on if ATS or STM age compositions were used). STMs fit to non-contemporaneous data may provide suitable information for assigning population structure to acoustic backscatter in data-rich areas, but advancements in acoustic data processing (e.g., automated echo classification) may be needed to generate viable USV-based estimates of biomass-at-age.

Acoustic-trawl surveys are an important tool for marine stock management and environmental monitoring of marine life. Correctly assigning the acoustic signal to species or species groups is a challenge, and recently trawl camera systems have been developed to support interpretation of acoustic data. Examining images from known positions in the trawl track provides high resolution ground truth for the presence of species. Here, we develop and deploy a deep learning neural network to automate the classification of species present in images from the Deep Vision trawl camera system. To remedy the scarcity of training data, we developed a novel training regime based on realistic simulation of Deep Vision images. We achieved a classification accuracy of 94% for blue whiting, Atlantic herring, and Atlantic mackerel, showing that automatic species classification is a viable and efficient approach, and further that using synthetic data can effectively mitigate the all too common lack of training data. Baseline surveys of offshore pelagic fishes in the eastern Chukchi Sea in 2012 and 2013 found that age-0 Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) dominated the pelagic fish community in summer, with relatively few adults present in the region. Since this time, drastic changes in the ocean-atmosphere-ice feedback loop have led to continued warming, further reducing ice cover, and increased northward transport has led to an increase in Pacific-origin waters on the Chukchi shelf in summer. To examine potential bottom-up effects of these environmental changes on pelagic fishes in this rapidly changing environment, we extended a time series of large-scale acoustic-trawl surveys with additional surveys in 2017 and 2019. Age-0 Arctic cod were the most abundant pelagic fish in all four survey years, comprising 68–93% of fish abundance. However, age-0 walleye pollock (Gadus chalcogrammus), which were scarce (<0.1% of fishes) and confined to the southern Chukchi in 2012 and 2013, were present in high abundance (>21% of fish abundance) throughout the Chukchi shelf in 2017 and 2019. Age-0 Arctic cod were substantially more abundant in 2017 than in other years, possibly due to increased survivorship of larvae under warm conditions. Unlike in 2017, Arctic cod and pollock were spatially separated in 2019 due to enhanced transport, with Arctic cod primarily present in the northeastern portion of the survey area, which was characterized by cool surface and bottom temperatures. The substantial increase in abundance of age-0 pollock in recent years suggests that environmental conditions now allow this species to extend its northern range into the southern and central Chukchi Sea, at least on a seasonal basis. The changes in abundance and species composition of pelagic fishes in the 2012–2019 time series are tightly coupled to recent changes in sea ice, temperature, and the increasing transport of Bering Sea waters through Bering Strait into the Chukchi Sea.
