Piezoelectric materials with shunt circuits have aroused much research interest due to flexible parameter adjustment. However, shunted piezoelectric elements are difficult to respond to the dynamic changes in the whole system due to the absence of autonomous control ability, which constrains their practical applications. Here, we propose a digital metalayer to control the wave energy transmission across different materials in real time. This digital metalayer comprises a stack of multiple piezoelectric lead zirconate titanate (PZT) disks connected with shunt capacitance circuits (SCCs). The external digital control system adjusts the effective acoustic impedance of the PZT disks through digital potentiometers and microprogrammed control unit, thereby enabling digital manipulation of wave transmission. Utilization of optimized SCCs further enhances adjustment accuracy, supporting both negative and positive capacitance values. The experiments demonstrate that this digital metalayer exhibits remarkable performance in controlling wave transmission. Moreover, the distinct variations in transmitted amplitudes, precisely controlled by the digital metalayer, are harnessed as binary signals for information transmission. An image of letters is encoded into a series of amplitude-modulated waves by the digital metalayer and clearly transmitted. Bulk acoustic wave (BAW) filters have been proven to be of high demand in today's low power RF front-ends for mobile communication devices. Within the launch of 5G applications worldwide, especially in the region of new radio (nr-1) up to 6 GHz, defined frequency bands require filters of wide bandwidths, while simultaneously featuring steep edges and high out-of-band rejection. Due to the coexistence with 4G LTE (long term evolution) wireless standards as well as advanced data transfer concepts such as carrier aggregation, the increasing complexity of antenna systems forces the implementation of highly selective acoustic filters. In contrast to the widely used surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology, BAW filters appear with superior performance for frequencies above 1 GHz. This work describes the fabrication of a BAW-solidly mounted resonator (BAW-SMR) with a tailored material system of a-SiOCN:H as a low impedance (low-Z) material integrated within its acoustic Bragg mirror. A direct comparison to the widely used low-Z material of SiO2 with an acoustic impedance of around 13 MRayl is demonstrated by two equal resonator stacks by replacing only the uppermost low-Z thin film of the acoustic reflector. A single-mask design was chosen with platinum as a bottom electrode to ensure the most equal growth conditions for the piezoelectric aluminum nitride (AlN) layers on both reflectors' surfaces featuring either the tailored a-SiOCN:H or standard SiO2. The a-SiOCN:H thin films were deposited by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition and the according acoustic impedance was priorly depicted to 7.1 MRayl, which could be exploited to achieve an increase in the effective coupling coefficient beyond 7% as well as a resonator bandwidth of more than 60 MHz. This paper presents a multi-field coupling model for magnetoelectric (ME) antennas, encompassing a ME film, electrode layers, and a substrate featuring a cavity structure. This model accounts for the nonlinear magnetoelastic coupling within the radiation layer and employs a combined DC and AC simulation methodology to capture the antenna's radiation mechanism. Leveraging this multi-field coupling model, performance differences between the ME antenna and an ideal ME composite film are analyzed. By exploring optimization schemes based on multi-physics fields, electrode materials, and structural design, the ME antenna's radiation performance is significantly enhanced. The findings demonstrate that the complete antenna structure, with its increased thickness and cavity design, exhibits a lower resonance frequency and a higher converse ME (CME) coefficient compared to the ideal ME film. The optimal CME effect is achieved under proper external stimuli, leading to a broader 3 dB bandwidth. Expanding the cavity dimensions enhances the CME coefficient by 42% and reduces the resonance frequency due to decreased acoustic wave loss. Adopting electrode materials with higher acoustic impedance elevates the CME coefficient, yet narrows the bandwidth. Conversely, using silver (Ag) electrodes promotes a broader bandwidth. The 5th generation (5G) wireless telecommunication standards with newly defined frequency bands up to 6 GHz are currently established around the world. While outperforming surface acoustic wave (SAW) filters above 1 GHz, bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonators in multiplexers for radio-frequency front-end (RFFE) modules continuously face higher performance requirements. In contrast to free-standing bulk acoustic resonators (FBARs), solidly mounted resonator (SMR) technology uses an acoustic Bragg mirror, which has already been successfully applied for several GHz applications. In this work, we investigate the potential of amorphous hydrogenated silicon-oxycarbonitride (a-SiOCN:H) thin films synthesized with low-temperature plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD) as a low acoustic impedance (low-Z) material. Compared to the state-of-the-art where in Bragg mirrors up to now SiO2 is used as standard, the acoustic impedance ratio against the high-Z material tungsten (W) is enhanced for a better device performance. To limit the expected increase in viscous loss when the acoustic impedance is reduced, to a minimum, predominantly the mass density was reduced while keeping the mechanical elasticity high. By doing so, acoustic impedance values as low as 7.1 MRayl were achieved, thereby increasing the impedance ratio of high-Z to low-Z materials from 8:1 up to 14:1. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Engineering Ocean Seismic 3D system, which enables ultra-high-resolution seismic surveys on a smaller survey scale, was deployed in Yeongil Bay, Pohang, South Korea. The region is renowned for abundant shallow gas deposits and faults. Based on acoustic impedance contrast and abnormal behavior observations, two seismic anomalies termed channel and polka-dot anomalies have been identified in the seismic volume. Seismic attribute analysis based on the signal amplitude and structural characteristics reveals that these anomalies correspond to shallow biogenic gas deposits. Structural interpretation of the seismic volume revealed that the contractional deformation resulting from post-Miocene neotectonics has resulted in uplift and reverse faulting in the Pohang region, contributing to the formation of anomalies. The channel anomalies correspond to gas-saturated tidal channels that formed during eustatic sea-level changes in the post-Last Glacial Maximum period. The polka-dot anomalies are located in topographic lows and are overlain by neotectonic sediment. The different behaviors of these anomalies in a seismic volume can be attributed to the different thicknesses of overburden overlying each of the anomalies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Total Organic Carbon (TOC) is one of the most important geochemical parameters in source rock evaluation, utilized to characterize the hydrocarbon generation potential. Artificial intelligence (AI) methods have significant features, including decreased time and high cost-effectiveness, providing a sufficient database, reducing risk, and enabling better decision-making. AI methods based on these significant features have become efficient tools in various approaches to geological studies such as prediction and classification. This study uses an artificial neural network (ANN), and ensemble algorithms including random forest, bagging, and least-square boosting to evaluate the organic richness of the Kazhdumi Formation in the Persian Gulf. The Kazhdumi Formation with Cretaceous age is well-known as one of the most important source rocks in the Zagros and NW of the Persian Gulf. The obtained results of Rock-Eval pyrolysis and conventional well logs e.g., sonic, neutron, density, spectral gamma-ray, resistivity, and acoustic impedance are utilized for TOC estimation. The performance of AI algorithms was analyzed using root mean squared error (RMSE) and mean absolute error (MAE) equations and the obtained results from the error evaluation analysis show that the least square boosting (LSB) algorithm has the lowest error than the other proposed algorithms in this investigation. The cross-validation analysis between the determined TOC values of blind samples of Rock-Eval pyrolysis and the AI algorithms e.g., the ANN and random forest, bagging, and least-square boosting are evaluated 0.89, 0.90, 0.94, and 0.95, respectively. The geochemical study of the Kazhdumi Formation as a potential source of rock shows that this formation has a good potential for hydrocarbon generation. According to the geochemical evaluation based on the cross-plot analysis, the Kazhdumi Formation contains type II, and type II-III kerogen, which is affected by the sedimentation conditions of this formation. Background: Focused ultrasound therapy has been widely used for the treatment of various diseases, employing different types of transducers. The focused ultrasound pressure fields inevitably exhibit nonlinear effects, which can influence the ablation region. However, the nonlinear effects exhibit noticeable variations across different applications. The characterization of the nonlinear pressure fields of ultrasound is important for the effective implementation of focused ultrasound therapy. Purpose: The traditional angular spectrum method (ASM) was extended to accurately and efficiently simulate the propagation of weakly nonlinear ultrasound in heterogeneous mediums of clinical model. The nonlinear effects were further analyzed in relationship to the transducer parameters that are different in various applications. Methods: The pressure fields were simulated using the extended ASM, incorporating calculations for phase aberration in the frequency domain and magnitude compensation in the spatial domain to account for heterogeneous acoustic impedance mismatch. Validation was performed by comparison to k‐Wave simulation results using two simplified clinical models, an abdominal soft tissue and a transcranial skull model. The nonlinear effects were then analyzed in relation to the transducer parameters of f‐number and effective source area based on the same acoustic output power. The analysis of nonlinear effects was conducted under both homogeneous medium and the clinical models. Results: The simulation results demonstrated a maximum error of 3.93% in the calculated harmonic pressure of the abdominal model, and a maximum error of 4.89% within the transcranial model when comparing the extended ASM simulation results to those obtained from k‐Wave simulations. The characterization of the nonlinear effects reveals a strong correlation with the transducer parameters. Specifically, the results indicate that the nonlinear effects intensify with an increase in the effective source area and f‐number, under the same acoustic output power of the transducer. However, the clinical model also showed an influence on the nonlinear effects in relation to the f‐number. Conclusion: The extended ASM was demonstrated as an accurate and efficient simulation tool, and the simulation results provide a reference for evaluating the intensity of nonlinear effects in various transducer designs. In the present investigations, the density, refractive index and speed of sound for pure organic solvents and binary liquid mixtures of 3,4,4′-Trichlorodiphenylurea between (293.15 and 323.15) K temperatures have been measured up to the solubility limit. From these experimental results, the acoustic impedance, the isentropic compressibility coefficient, the space-filling factor, the specific refraction, the relaxation strength, the intermolecular free length, the surface tension, the solubility and the solvation number of triclocarban in six organic solvents, namely ethyl alcohol, n-Propyl alcohol, n-Butyl alcohol, Tetrahydrofuran, N,N-Dimethylformamide and N,N-Dimethylacetamide have been computed. The studied acoustic and optical parameters and surface tension behavior versus temperature in pure solvents and binary mixtures were useful in understanding the nature and the extent of interaction between the solute and solvent molecules. The results also show the presence of higher degree of interaction between triclocarban and nitrogen-containing solvents in comparison with other solvents. Combining multiple monitoring methods can improve the accuracy of coal damage and fracture behavior detection. In this study, nine coal samples, each with similar P-wave velocities and masses, were subjected to joint monitoring experiments involving multiple physical parameters. The acoustic emission (AE) and resistance information of coal samples were assessed from the initiation of loading to eventual failure under diverse uniaxial loading rates. The characteristic electrical and acoustic parameters were analyzed in combination with coal damage conditions. The results show that, throughout the loading process, resistivity declined gradually with escalation of coal strain, followed by an abrupt nonlinear increase. Deformation before failure reduced coal resistivity by up to 11.39%. As the coal crack area expanded, the resistivity post-failure reached threefold the initial value. The AE ring count peak value corresponded to crack growth, and the AE energy had a power law distribution feature. The frequency band effect of the AE peak frequency was significant, and shear cracks accounted for more than 80%. Resistance and AE ring count exhibited simultaneous responses to coal failure, and the characteristic parameters of acoustic-electrical behavior demonstrated consistent patterns for cracks induced by various loading rates. The time sequence characteristics of the RSD index, which quantified the degree of resistivity fluctuation, corresponded almost exactly to the development process of coal damage described by AE, and the peak value of this index corresponded to the AE event in the time scale. The overall fluctuation degrees in resistivity of coal samples with varying damage levels showed positive correlation with the AE ring count. An acoustic-electric method for characterizing coal damage is summarized, and corresponding resistivity characteristic parameters are proposed. Accurate reservoir characterization is necessary to effectively monitor, manage, and increase production. A seismic inversion methodology using a genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique is proposed in this study to characterize the reservoir both qualitatively and quantitatively. It is usually difficult and expensive to map deeper reservoirs in exploratory operations when using conventional approaches for reservoir characterization hence inversion based on advanced technique (GA and PSO) is proposed in this study. The main goal is to use GA and PSO to significantly lower the fitness (error) function between real seismic data and modeled synthetic data, which will allow us to estimate subsurface properties and accurately characterize the reservoir. Both techniques estimate subsurface properties in a comparable manner. Consequently, a qualitative and quantitative comparison is conducted between these two algorithms. Using two synthetic data and one real data from the Blackfoot field in Canada, the study examined subsurface acoustic impedance and porosity in the inter-well zone. Porosity and acoustic impedance are layer features, but seismic data is an interface property, hence these characteristics provide more useful and applicable reservoir information. The inverted results aid in the understanding of seismic data by providing incredibly high-resolution images of the subsurface. Both the GA and the PSO algorithms deliver outstanding results for both simulated and real data. The inverted section accurately delineated a high porosity zone ( > 20 % ) that supported the high seismic amplitude anomaly by having a low acoustic impedance (6000–8500 m/s ∗ g/cc). This unusual zone is categorized as a reservoir (sand channel) and is located in the 1040–1065 ms time range. In this inversion process, after 400 iterations, the fitness error falls from 1 to 0.88 using GA optimization, compared to 1 to 0.25 using PSO. The convergence time for GA is 670,680 s, but the convergence time for PSO optimization is 356,400 s, showing that the former requires 88 % more time than the latter. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chiral hybrid metal halides have emerged as a promising class of piezoelectric materials owing to their ease of synthesis, low acoustic impedance, and solution processibility. However, many known chiral halides crystalize in structures with only shear piezoelectricity which is less facile to be utilized compared with the longitudinal piezoelectricity, largely preventing their practical utility. In addressing this problem, chiral lead‐free S‐MPBiCl5 and R‐MPBiCl5 (MP = 2‐methylpiperazinium) with shear piezoelectricity are synthesized and the thin films orientating along the polarization direction are fabricated. These orientated films, characterized by numerous grains and compact grain boundaries, can effectively facilitate the grain boundary sliding to convert normal stress into shear stress, thus facilely activating the shear piezoelectricity. The resulting devices can accurately identify the position and type of ultrasound sources without the need for a complex acoustic impedance matching layer. Moreover, these devices can successfully sense delicate variations in momentum caused by table tennis balls. A high-resolution seismic survey (HRSS) is often used in coal exploration to bridge the data gap between two consecutive boreholes and avoid ambiguity in geological interpretation. The application of high-resolution seismic surveys in the Indian context is challenging as the delineation of thin non-coal layers within the coal layer requires a very high seismic data resolution. However, conventional seismic processing techniques fail to resolve thin coal/non-coal layers and faults, which is crucial for the precise estimation of coal resources and mine economics. To address these issues, we applied the inverse continuous wavelet transform deconvolution (ICWT-Decon) technique to post-stack depth-migrated seismic sections. We examined the feasibility of the ICWT-Decon technique in both a synthetic post-stack depth-migrated model and 2D/3D seismic data from the North Karanpura and Talcher Coalfields in Eastern India. The results offered enhanced seismic sections, attributes (similarity and sweetness), and acoustic inversion that aided in the precise positioning of faults and the delineation of a thin non-coal layer of 4.68 m within a 16.7 m coal seam at an approximate depth of 450 m to 550 m. This helped in the refinement of the resource estimation from 74.96 MT before applying ICWT-Decon to 55.92 MT afterward. Overall, the results of the study showed enhancements in the seismic data resolution, the better output of seismic attributes, and acoustic inversion, which could enable more precise lithological and structural interpretation. Seismic inversion holds significant potential for providing crucial lithostratigraphic information in hydrocarbon reservoir characterisation and in identifying new traps. However, one of the major challenges in achieving reliable reservoir models in Algeria stems from the inherent uncertainties associated with seismic inversion algorithms and the non-linear relationship between petrophysical measurements. Due to their usefulness, several Artificial Neural Network algorithms have been developed and employed for seismic inversion and reservoir characterisation in the last few years. Nevertheless, only few researchers have addressed this issue in terms of optimisation of Multilayer Feed-Forward Neural Network (MLFN) architecture. In this case study, the use of an MLFN to address these challenges is proposed. The primary contribution of this research lies in the optimisation of the MLFN architecture based on trial and error procedures. The goal is to ensure that the computational demands are manageable within the constraints of available computing resources and that the process is time-efficient for geo-modellers. This practical approach is particularly valuable when applied at the reservoir scale. MLFN supervised training is conducted using logging data, where measured log curves serve as inputs, and core porosity, obtained from laboratory analysis, serves as target output. Moreover, coloured inversion is employed to generate a 3D seismic acoustic impedance cube, which, in turn, serves as input for a model-based inversion method designed to calculate porosity volume using the trained network. Furthermore, the usefulness of the resulting density cube is demonstrated through the correlation with density logs and core density values at wells 1, 2, and 3. Thence, the obtained correlation ranges validate the reliability of the obtained porosity volume in enhancing the characterisation of the targeted reservoir within the Algerian Saharan field. Recently, capacitive micromachined ultrasound transducers (CMUTs) with long rectangular membranes have demonstrated performance advantages over conventional piezoelectric transducers; however, modeling these CMUT geometries has been limited to computationally burdensome numerical methods. Improved fast modeling methods, such as equivalent circuit models, could help achieve designs with even better performance. The primary obstacle in developing such methods is the lack of tractable methods for computing the radiation impedance of clamped rectangular radiators. This paper presents a method that approximates the velocity profile using a polynomial shape model to rapidly and accurately estimate radiation impedance. The validity of the approximate velocity profile and corresponding radiation impedance calculation was assessed using finite element simulations for a variety of membrane aspect ratios and bias voltages. Our method was evaluated for rectangular radiators with width:length ratios from 1:1 up to 1:25. At all aspect ratios, the radiation resistance was closely modeled. However, when calculating the radiation reactance, our initial approach was only accurate for low aspect ratios. This motivated us to consider an alternative shape model for high aspect ratios, which was more accurate when compared with FEM. Porosity and acoustic impedance are important in the study of subsurface properties of rocks and soil. Porosity is influenced by the type of minerals, and fluids, and their distribution within the subsurface material. Acoustic impedance is a key parameter in seismic inversion because it governs the reflection and transmission of seismic waves at interfaces between different rock layers. Mapping porosity and acoustic impedance using seismic inversion poses several challenges such as low resolution, longer convergence times compared to other optimization techniques, and handling large datasets. To address these challenges, our current study has employed a semi-hybrid optimization approach by incorporating a pattern search (PS) method into the globally recognized simulated annealing (SA) technique. In our devised methodology, seismic data is meticulously inverted, trace by trace, initially utilizing the simulated annealing process and subsequently integrating the pattern search which further reduces computational Complexity. The output from SA serves as the foundation for the PS optimization, preventing it from getting trapped in local minima or maxima. To evaluate the algorithm, we initiated a systematic analysis using synthetic data. The hybrid optimization method performed well, yielding highly accurate inversion results with a remarkable high resolution and correlation between original and inverted impedance. We then applied this approach to actual seismic reflection data from the Blackfoot field in Alberta, Canada. Notably, the inversion identified a sand channel between 1055 and 1070 ms two-way travel time, characterized by low impedance and high porosity, suggesting the potential presence of hydrocarbon reservoirs. The level of performance demonstrated in this context may not be anticipated when utilizing SA or PS optimization alone. Hence, the newly devised semi-hybrid optimization approach emerges as a highly recommended solution, offering the potential to address the constraints of individual optimization methods and deliver thorough subsurface insights. At the early stages of drug development, the amount of drug materials is rather limited. In this case, viscosity measurement is often postponed to the later stages, where grams of proteins can be produced. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a viscometer capable of measuring the viscosity with high accuracy while requiring low sample volume. This study presents a novel viscosity measurement technique based on measuring the resonance frequency and motional resistance of a micropillar-enhanced acoustic wave (μPAW) device. The μPAW was developed by fabricating micropillars on the quartz crystal microbalance substrate in order to achieve ultra-high sensitivity, thanks to a unique coupling between the micropillar and the resonator. The experimental measurements demonstrated a nonlinear relationship between the density and viscosity of the fluid and the response of μPAW. A calibration correlation was developed using the response of μPAW in aqueous glycerol and sucrose solutions. The measurements were then extended using high-concentration BSA solutions as the model of protein solution. The main advantage of the μPAW device in this work over other viscometers is the ability to simultaneously measure solution viscosity and protein adsorption on the surface. This is a huge step forward in the development of sensing systems for the pharmaceutical industry, where real-time sensing of target biological proteins and measuring the viscosity of a solution is required. This work aims to explore the interactions between a wide-spectrum bactericidal drug, gemifloxacin (GMF), and micelles of cationic (dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide, DTAB) and anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate, SDS) surfactants at the molecular level under physiological conditions (using a phosphate buffer, pH 7.4). Various physical parameters are calculated from volumetric and acoustic data. These include apparent molar volume ( ɸ V ), apparent molar isentropic compressibility ( ɸ K ), isentropic compressibility ( K s ), specific acoustic impedance (Z), relative association (RA), intermolecular free length (Lf) and sound velocity number (U). The obtained quantities are interpreted regarding of solute-solute and solute-solvent interactions employing the cosphere overlap model and electrostriction effect. Further, normal and differential UV-visible spectroscopy is employed to predict GMF locus in ionic micelles and to find the binding constant (Kb) and partition coefficient (Kc) along with the corresponding free energy changes of GMF-ionic micelle systems. The structural, optical and acoustical properties of a polymer composite of sodium sulfate (Na2SO4) doped polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) were studied. The simple chemical route method was utilized for the preparation of the polymer composite by varying the concentration of Na ions in the PVP. The pure 3% PVP solution was mixed with five different concentrations of Na2SO4 solutions in the ratio of 80:20. X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra of PVP/Na2SO4 (1.0% of Na2SO4 in 3.0% of PVP) confirmed the crystalline nature of the PVP/Na2SO4 polymer composite. The identification of several chemical functional groups contained in the PVP/Na2SO4 was demonstrated by Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The FTIR showed the excellent interaction between the polymer (PVP) and the dopant Na2SO4. Optical studies were performed by utilizing a UV-visible absorbance spectrophotometer. The UV-VIS spectroscopy results indicated that absorption increased in an asymmetric manner and the absorption peak showed a red shift with increasing Na ions concentration in the host PVP. The optical band gaps (direct and indirect) were found to decrease with increase in Na ions concentration in the polymer due to increase in the density of localized states in the band-gap. The activation and Urbach energies were evaluated from the conductivity measurements and the absorption coefficient, respectively. Several acoustical parameters, viz. ultrasonic velocity, density, viscosity, adiabatic compressibility, intermolecular free length, acoustic impedance, and surface tension, were also computed. The ultrasonic velocity, acoustic impedance, density, viscosity, and surface tension of the polymer solutions were found to increase while the adiabatic compressibility and intermolecular free length decreased with the addition of increasing amounts of Na ions in PVP. In many noise scenarios, it is necessary to ensure ventilation and noise suppression. In this paper, a ventilated acoustic metamaterial labyrinth plate (VAMLP), formed by an array of labyrinth cells (LCs), is presented. Each labyrinth cell contains four labyrinth waveguide units (WUs). Based on the impedance series principle, an analytical model of the WU was developed and validated by a numerical model and impedance-tube experiments to determine the sound transmission loss of the WU and the LC. The mechanism of the influence of thermo-viscous loss was quantitatively analyzed, and it was clarified that the VAMLP produced sound absorption due to thermo-viscous loss. The change law of impedance at the entrance of the waveguide was analyzed, revealing the noise-reduction mechanism of the labyrinth unit. Combining a BP network and an improved sparrow search algorithm (ISSA), a BP–ISSA optimization model is proposed to optimize the ventilation capacity of the labyrinth cells. The BP-network model can accurately predict the resonance frequency from the structural parameters to form the fitness function. The ISSA optimization model was constructed using the fitness function as the constraint of an equation. Understanding the distribution of shear wave velocity (VS) in hydrocarbon reservoirs is a crucial concern in reservoir geophysics. This geophysical parameter is utilized for reservoir characterization, calculating elastic properties, assessing fractures, and evaluating reservoir quality. Unfortunately, not all wells have available VS data due to the expensive nature of its measurements. Hence, it is crucial to calculate this parameter using other relevant features. Therefore, over the past few decades, numerous techniques have been introduced to calculate the VS data using petrophysical logs in wells with limited information. Unfortunately, the majority of these methods have a drawback they only offer insight into the location of the wells and do not provide any details regarding the distribution of VS in the space between the wells. In this article, we employed three-dimensional post-stack seismic attributes and well-logging data integration to predict the distribution of VS in the Asmari formation in an Iranian oil field. To accomplish this objective, the model-based seismic inversion algorithm was utilized to convert the seismic section into the acoustic impedance (AI) section. Then, AI and seismic data were utilized in the cross-validation method to determine the relevant attributes for predicting the spatial distribution of VS throughout the entire reservoir area, using an artificial neural network. The proposed method was shown to provide 94% correlation and 109 m/s error between the actual and estimated VS. Background: Otitis media with effusion (OME) is a common disease in ear, nose, and throat clinics characterized by aural fullness and hearing loss and mainly caused by eustachian tube dysfunction (ETD). Tympanostomy tube insertion (TTI) is a conventional surgical treatment option that can alleviate symptoms but does not provide a definitive cure, and it is prone to recurrence. Balloon dilation eustachian tuboplasty (BDET) has become a novel procedure for the treatment of ETD, demonstrating significant potential in addressing the aforementioned limitations. However, it is not widely available in the clinic and few high-quality randomized clinical trials was conducted to investigate its long-term efficacy and security in OME. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to verify the efficacy of BDET combined with TTI for patients with OME and its prospects for providing a definitive cure. Methods and analysis: This is a prospective, parallel-group, single-blind, randomized controlled prospective trial. Totally 124 patients with OME will be randomized into either group A or B. Group A will receive conventional therapy (TTI) while group B will use BDET therapy in addition to TTI. Outcome assessments will take place at baseline and at the 3rd, 6th, 12th, and 24th months after surgery. The primary outcome is eustachian tube function, which will be measured by the eustachian tube dysfunction questionnaire (ETDQ-7) and eustachian tube score (ETS). The secondary outcomes include middle ear function, hearing situation, and quality of life, which will be measured by acoustic impedance measurement, pure-tone audiometry, and Chinese-version Chronic Ear Survey (CCES). The main analysis of change in the outcomes will use mixed-model with repeated measures (MMRM) analyses of variance (ANOVAs). Discussion: This is the first prospective trial in Chinese populations that aims to validate the long-term efficacy and safety of BDET-combined TTI therapy in patients with OME. This parallel-group, single-blind, randomized controlled trial may provide an opportunity to decrease the recurrence rate of OME and explore a definitive cure for patients with OME. This trial's rigorous design enhances the reliability of the findings, ensuring a robust answer to the research question. With the increasing demand for building acoustic performance, accurately evaluating the acoustic performance of building walls has become an important research topic. However, existing research has mostly focused on general building materials such as concrete, iron and steel, and glass. For wooden structure wall, due to the sound absorption performance of the materials themselves and the complexity of structural design, the analysis of their acoustic performance is still relatively weak. Moreover, there is a lack of quantitative description of their spectral characteristics and acoustic impedance. To analyze the acoustic performance of wooden structure building walls, Building Information Model (BIM) and impedance tube method were integrated to construct a building wall performance testing system with BIM technology. The impedance tube method was applied and testing functions for sound absorption and insulation performance were designed. The outcomes indicated that in the error test, the error range between the experimental group and the control group was [0.01, 0.18], indicating a high reliability of the experimental results. In the calculation of sound insulation of different specimens at different sound frequencies, when the frequency was 1600Hz, the sound insulation of the control group and experimental group was 65.30dB and 70.14dB, proving the effectiveness of the design method. The above results demonstrate the practicality of integrating BIM technology and impedance tube method in the acoustic performance analysis of wooden structure building walls. Fibre metal laminates (FML) represent an innovative class of advanced composite materials that integrate the mechanical properties of both metals and fibre‐reinforced composites (FRP). Combining the strength and ductility of metals with the lightweight and high stiffness of FRP and FMLs have emerged as new material compositions for applications in chemical, nuclear, automobile, and aerospace engineering disciplines. Structural health monitoring (SHM) using guided ultrasonic waves (GUW) is the state‐of‐the‐art for non‐destructive testing of thin‐walled structures. When applied to FML, SHM plays a crucial role in monitoring the integrity over time and detecting potential damage such as delamination, fibre breakage, or other structural anomalies. In SHM with GUW, a wave‐field is emitted by actuators. This wave‐field can be affected by damage in the structure, thereby changing its propagation characteristics. Sensors monitor the interaction between damage and GUW, which can be utilized to locate and classify the damage and ascertain the overall health state of the structure. In this study, an advanced integration of measurement hardware, that is, sensors and actuators, within the laminate structure is investigated. Sensor integration into FML allows for improved and more sophisticated monitoring capabilities in comparison to measuring techniques like laser vibrometers, which are limited to measuring displacements on the surface of the structure. However, the integration of sensors and actuators yields the technical difficulty of distorting the wave‐fields and may result in an over‐ or underestimation of the damage. Similar to damage, the distortion of the wave‐field is caused by the changes in acoustic impedance resulting from different material properties. In a previous study, incorporating a functionally graded artificial interphase through acoustic impedance matching between the sensor and host material showed notable and significant outcomes. The current contribution extends the prior graded artificial interphase for an isotropic homogeneous material to an FML structure. This paper presents a comprehensive numerical simulation study on a two‐dimensional model of FML with integrated sensors. The interphases are designed based on impedance matching, which improves signal transmission and reduces disturbing reflections. The conducted investigations hold for several interphase configurations for a wide frequency range. The optimised integration of sensors demonstrates promising results for enhancing the reliability and accuracy of SHM systems. This research serves as a foundation for further experimental validation and the development of advanced sensor‐integrated FML structures with improved monitoring capabilities. In the past decade, signature clinical neuropathology of blast-induced traumatic brain injury has been under intense debate, but interface astroglial scarring (IAS) seems to be convincing. In this study, we examined whether IAS could be replicated in the rat brain exposed to a laser-induced shock wave(s) (LISW[s]), a tool that can produce a pure shock wave (primary mechanism) without dynamic pressure (tertiary mechanism). Under certain conditions, we observed astroglial scarring in the subpial glial plate (SGP), gray-white matter junctions (GM-WM), ventricular wall (VW), and regions surrounding cortical blood vessels, accurately reproducing clinical IAS. We also observed shock wave impulse-dependent meningeal damage (dural microhemorrhage) in vivo by transcranial near-infrared (NIR) reflectance imaging. Importantly, there were significant correlations between the degree of dural microhemorrhage and the extent of astroglial scarring more than 7 days post-exposure, suggesting an association of meningeal damage with astroglial scarring. The results demonstrated that the primary mechanism alone caused the IAS and meningeal damage, both of which are attributable to acoustic impedance mismatching at multi-layered tissue boundaries. The time course of glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) immunoreactivity depended not only on the LISW conditions but also on the regions. In the SGP, significant increases in GFAP immunoreactivity were observed at 3 days post-exposure, whereas in the GM-WM and VW, GFAP immunoreactivity was not significantly increased before 28 days post-exposure, suggesting different pathological mechanisms. With the high-impulse single exposure or the multiple exposure (low impulse), fibrotic reaction or fibrotic scar formation was observed, in addition to astroglial scarring, in the cortical surface region. Although there are some limitations, this seems to be the first report on the shock-wave-induced IAS rodent model. The model may be useful to explore potential therapeutic approaches for IAS. A liquid piston Stirling engine is an external combustion engine that uses air and water under atmospheric pressure as its working fluids. Resulting from its uncomplicated design and the capacity to operate under relatively low temperature differentials of less than 100 °C, it has attracted considerable attention in recent years. This paper presents the fundamental characteristics of the liquid piston engine combined with a self-rectifying turbine for the advancement of thermal generators. When the turbine is installed in the water region rather than in the air region, it exhibits unidirectional rotation with a rotational speed directly proportional to the velocity amplitude of the reciprocating axial flow. Additionally, the acoustic impedance within the duct section containing the turbine is determined, demonstrating that the real part of impedance rises with increasing axial velocity, indicating a loss mechanism similar to the minor loss. Furthermore, the installation of the turbine results in a breakdown of symmetry in the engine oscillation mode. To maintain symmetry and improve system design, future developments must consider the installation of a turbine in each unit. Ultrasound is a safe, noninvasive diagnostic technique used to measure internal structures such as tissues, organs, and arterial and venous blood flow. Skin‐mounted wearable ultrasound devices can enable long‐term continuous monitoring of patients to provide solutions to critical healthcare needs. However, stretchable ultrasound devices that are composed of ultrasonic transducers embedded in an elastomer matrix are incompatible with existing rigid acoustic matching layers, leading to reduced energy transmission and reduced imaging resolution. Here, a systematic study of soft composites with liquid metal (LM) fillers dispersed in elastomers reveals key strategies to tune the acoustic impedance of soft materials. Experiments supported by theoretical models demonstrate that the increase in acoustic impedance is primarily driven by the increase in density with negligible changes to the speed of sound through the material. By controlling the volume loading and particle size of the LM fillers, a material is created that achieves a high acoustic impedance 4.8 Mrayl, (> 440% increase over the polymer matrix) with low modulus (< 1 MPa) and high stretchability (> 100% strain). When the device is mechanically strained, a small decrease is observed in acoustic impedance (< 15%) with negligible decrease in sound transmittance and impact on attenuation for all droplet sizes. The stretchable acoustic matching layer is then integrated with a wearable ultrasound device and the ability to measure motion is demonstrated using a phantom model as is performed in Doppler ultrasound. To analyze the impact of volcanic rocks in the Offshore Indus Basin on hydrocarbon reservoir formation, seismic data interpretation, seismic data inversion, and sea–land correlation analysis were carried out. The results show that, longitudinally, volcanic rocks are mainly distributed at the top of the Cretaceous system or at the bottom of the Paleocene, and carbonate rock platforms or reefs of the Paleocene–Eocene are usually developed on them. On the plane, volcanic rocks are mainly distributed on the Saurashtra High in the southeastern part of the basin. In terms of thickness, the volcanic rocks revealed by drilling in Karachi nearshore are about 70 m thick. We conducted sparse spike inversion for acoustic impedance in the volcanic rock area. The results show that the thickness of the Deccan volcanic rocks in the study area is between 250 and 750 m which is thinning from southeast to northwest. Based on sea–land comparison and comprehensive research, the distribution of volcanic rocks in the Indian Fan Offshore Basin played a constructive role in the Mesozoic oil and gas accumulation in the Indus offshore. Therefore, in the Indian Fan Offshore Basin, attention should be paid to finding Mesozoic self-generated and self-stored hydrocarbon reservoirs and Cenozoic lower-generated and upper-stored hydrocarbon reservoirs. Abstract Accurate reservoir characterization is necessary to effectively monitor, manage, and increase production. A seismic inversion methodology using a genetic algorithm (GA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) technique is proposed in this study to characterize the reservoir both qualitatively and quantitatively. It is usually difficult and expensive to map deeper reservoirs in exploratory operations when using conventional approaches for reservoir characterization hence inversion based on advanced technique (GA and PSO) is proposed in this study. The main goal is to use GA and PSO to significantly lower the fitness (error) function between real seismic data and modeled synthetic data, which will allow us to estimate subsurface properties and accurately characterize the reservoir. Both techniques estimate subsurface properties in a comparable manner. Consequently, a qualitative and quantitative comparison is conducted between these two algorithms. Using two synthetic data and one real data from the Blackfoot field in Canada, the study examined subsurface acoustic impedance and porosity in the inter-well zone. Porosity and acoustic impedance are layer features, but seismic data is an interface property, hence these characteristics provide more useful and applicable reservoir information. The inverted results aid in the understanding of seismic data by providing incredibly high-resolution images of the subsurface. Both the GA and the PSO algorithms deliver outstanding results for both simulated and real data. The inverted section accurately delineated a high porosity zone ( $$>20\%$$ > 20 % ) that supported the high seismic amplitude anomaly by having a low acoustic impedance (6000–8500 m/s $$*$$ ∗ g/cc). This unusual zone is categorized as a reservoir (sand channel) and is located in the 1040–1065 ms time range. In this inversion process, after 400 iterations, the fitness error falls from 1 to 0.88 using GA optimization, compared to 1 to 0.25 using PSO. The convergence time for GA is 670,680 s, but the convergence time for PSO optimization is 356,400 s, showing that the former requires $$88\%$$ 88 % more time than the latter.

Environment-friendly lead-free potassium sodium niobate-based piezoelectric materials have been widely used in acoustic device applications because of its high piezoelectric response, high Curie temperature, and low acoustic impedance. In our previous works, samarium modified 0.915(K0.45Na0.5Li0.05)NbO3–0.075BaZrO3–0.01(Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3 (Sm–KNLN–BZ–BNT) ceramics have achieved high piezoelectric properties with good thermal stability. To further improve its properties and thermal stability, grain orientation-controlled methods have been introduced to Sm–KNLN–BZ–BNT ceramics. In this work, textured Sm–KNLN–BZ–BNT ceramics with a 93% ⟨001⟩c-oriented textured degree have been prepared. The samples have achieved a d33* value with 532 pm/V and better thermal stability between room temperature to 150 °C than the non-textured samples. Moreover, ultrasonic transducers with a 25 MHz center frequency have been designed and fabricated by the textured Sm–KNLN–BZ–BNT ceramics. The peak-to-peak of the transducers has reached a 1.78 V high level, which demonstrated the textured Sm–KNLN–BZ–BNT ceramics are a good candidate for acoustic applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acoustic metamaterials have garnered significant attention as an effective means to control low-frequency noise. However, the accurate design of complex structures composed of multiple subunits is still a challenge due to local coupling effects. To address this issue, in this work, a new design method is proposed that accurately achieves impedance matching at the target frequency when subunits are coupled in parallel. The method is demonstrated using six Fabry–Pérot (F–P) tubes to achieve perfect sound absorption in the continuous band of 405–445 Hz and the discontinuous bands of 400–410 and 430–440 Hz. Theoretical results show an average absorption coefficient of 99.3% in the target frequency band, which is verified through an impedance tube experiment. In addition, this paper explores the stability of this method under complex design conditions and discusses the mechanism of the influence of subunit parameters on sound-absorption performance from the perspective of impedance matching. Overall, the proposed design method offers a promising approach to achieving broadband sound absorption using multiple coupled subunits. Achieving broadband absorption of sound waves below 500 Hz with materials of sub-wavelength thickness is significant but still a great challenge in academia and industries. Here, we present and theoretically analyze an airtight sound-absorbing metasurface constructed by a membrane-covered and coiled Helmholtz resonator. It is discovered that the metasurface possesses a near-perfect absorption with a working wavelength approximately 33.6 times greater than the total thickness, which stems from synthetic modulation on acoustic reactance brought by the membrane, air gap formed behind the membrane, and a coiled channel. Furthermore, on-demand broadband absorption below 500 Hz is achieved by parallel assemblies consisting of four subunits. An excellent agreement between measurements and predictions confirms the validity of the proposed structures. The airtight construction also broadens its application scenarios compared to the common perforated absorbers with open pores directly exposed to external environments. Increasing hydrocarbon production in Ukraine requires the development and introduction of new promising methodological and technological means of petrophysical support and drilling support for exploration areas based on modern scientific and technological achievements. The analysis of the geological structure of lithological and stratigraphic strata of the Neogene Krukenytska system of the Bilche-Volytska depression of the Precarpathian trough confirmed that each individual case has its own peculiarities both in the structure of the rock matrix and in the conditions of its formation. Based on the results of the analysis and evaluation of the quality of interpretation of physical parameters of geophysical surveys of complexly structured reservoir rocks of Neogene sediments, the influence of clay content, temperature and reservoir pressure on the readings of electrical, radioactive and acoustic measurements of mineralogical composition was established. Electrometric methods, which are part of a typical GDS complex, have their limitations when recording resistivity values, in particular, insufficient resolution and ambiguity in assessing the nature of saturation when studying complex reservoir rocks. In the process of assessing the nature of saturation of complexly constructed reservoir rocks of Neogene sediments, the presence of water-saturated rocks in the roof of gas-saturated formations without a continuous lintel was revealed, which also causes watering of productive horizons, thus reducing gas and condensate production. The sandy rocks of the Lower Dashava subsurface are characterized, in addition to normal interbedding, by the presence of hydrocarbon accumulations in lens-shaped traps with various petrophysical parameters. The established features of the geological structure of Neogene lithologic and stratigraphic strata confirm the complex geology of Neogene and Paleogene rocks and cause complications in geological and geophysical studies in exploration wells.

Abstract This study integrates seismic inversion and rock physics techniques to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential of an offshore field in the Niger Delta. Five wells revealed three reservoir sands with favourable reservoir properties, including gross thickness (49.2–81.4 m), porosity (0.18–0.2), permeability (565–1481 mD), and water saturation (0.16–0.54). A robust wavelet extraction process was implemented to guide seismic inversion, and a well log-centric approach was employed to validate the resulting acoustic impedance data. Rock physics analysis established correlations between acoustic impedance (Zp), porosity, fluid content, and lithology, enabling the identification of hydrocarbon-filled sands, brine-saturated sands, and shales. These relationships enabled the discrimination of hydrocarbon-filled sands [5000–8000 (m/s)(g/cc)], from brine-saturated sands [5600–8400 (m/s)(g/cc)], and shales [5000–9000 (m/s)(g/cc)] within the inverted seismic data. The inverted acoustic impedance section showed a general increase with depth, reflecting the typical compaction effects in the Niger Delta. Analysis of the impedance distribution across horizon time slices revealed prospective zones with low impedance values [below 6300 (m/s)(g/cc)], particularly in horizons 1 and 2. These newly identified zones exhibit the strongest potential for hydrocarbon accumulation and warrant further investigation. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of using well log and rock physics constrained seismic inversion for hydrocarbon exploration in an offshore field in the Niger Delta.

Abstract Acoustic impedance is the product of the density of a material and the speed at which an acoustic wave travels through it. Understanding this relationship is essential because low acoustic impedance values are closely associated with high porosity, facilitating the accumulation of more hydrocarbons. In this study, we estimate the acoustic impedance based on nine different inputs of seismic attributes in addition to depth and two-way travel time using three supervised machine learning models, namely extra tree regression (ETR), random forest regression, and a multilayer perceptron regression algorithm using the scikit-learn library. Our results show that the R 2 of multilayer perceptron regression is 0.85, which is close to what has been reported in recent studies. However, the ETR method outperformed those reported in the literature in terms of the mean absolute error, mean squared error, and root-mean-squared error. The novelty of this study lies in achieving more accurate predictions of acoustic impedance for exploration.

The first asymmetric mode (A1 mode) lamb wave resonator (LWR) with a resonant frequency of 6 GHz based on Z-cut lithium niobate (LN) films is presented. An asymmetric electrode structure with different-sized electrode pads in the center and edged regions has been proposed, which can be used to optimize the distribution of the electric field and decrease acoustic impedance mismatch to improve the target mode. Experiment results reveal that LWRs with an asymmetric electrode structure can successfully enhance the A1 mode, achieving a high effective electromechanical coefficient ( k eff 2 ) of 26%, a quality factor (Q) of 1123, and an excellent figure-of-merit (FOM = k eff 2 ∙ Q) of 262. It demonstrates that asymmetric electrode structure provides a new way to suppress the spurious modes for LWRs and shows a great application prospect in wide-bandwidth and low-loss filters used in the sub-6 G frequency range. Implantable electrical neurostimulators offer a promising avenue for treating neurological disorders. However, their dependency on a finite battery life limits their long‐term utility. Emerging transcutaneous ultrasound‐driven triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) techniques provide solutions for converting external ultrasound waves into internal electricity. This study proposes an implantable ultrasound‐driven TENG (IU‐TENG) using polyether ether ketone (PEEK) for its exceptional stability inside a human body and acoustic impedance compatibility with human tissues. This IU‐TENG remarkably surpasses traditional titanium‐based encapsulation, resulting in a 99.94% efficiency in ultrasound transmission. In addition, PEEK contains numerous electron‐donating functional groups, making it suitable for TENG applications, particularly as a positive triboelectric layer. The device exhibits robust voltage outputs, reaching up to 11.50 and 8.75 V in water and in vivo, respectively, under body‐safe ultrasound intensities. Moreover, its ability to sustain a stable electrical output for over 300 min emphasizes the durability and mechanical resilience of PEEK. In vivo mouse models and ex vivo porcine tissue trials demonstrate the effectiveness of the IU‐TENG in nerve stimulation, showing its potential in medical treatments, enhancing the functionality and longevity of implantable medical devices. This study demonstrates an integrated approach using a seismic-coloured inversion to derive the hydrocarbon potential of a field in the Upper Assam basin. The well-log analysis indicated the presence of hydrocarbon in the form of gas, oil, and water in sandstones with thin streaks of limestone and shale layers. The Acoustic Impedance (AI) model was generated from post-stack seismic data using a coloured inversion. Shale volume (Vshale), density, porosity and water saturation are the petrophysical parameters spatially populated using a multilayered feed-forward neural network on the inversion-based AI model. The estimated range of model-derived parameters varies as Velocity: 2136–5034 m/s, Vshale: 0–48%, Density: 2.14–2.72 gm/cc, Porosity: 6–29%, Water saturation: 9–28%, and demonstrates a reasonable correlation to well-log data. Seismic attribute for thin-fault likelihood was used to interpret the major faults. From the combined analysis based on interpreted faults and modelled parameters, the northwestern part of the study area displays a thick hydrocarbon-bearing zone (due to increasing thickness and reservoir quality). This interpretation is based on the consideration that faults are open. Background: Hearing loss (HL) is a common congenital disease present at birth, happening in approximately one to three of every 1000 healthy newborns. Evoked otoacoustic emission (OAE) is extremely useful in infant hearing screening. Tympanometry is a test that measures the changes of the acoustic impedance (AI) of the tympanic ossicular system (TOS). Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the role of high-frequency tympanometry (HFT) in neonatal hearing screening (NHS), and to study the prevalence of HL in a sample of newborns. Patients and methods: This Cross-sectional study included 100 neonates who were tested in three stages, first stage was screening by transient evoked otoacouastic emissions (TEOAE) and HFT at primary health care centers, second and third stages was audiological diagnosis at the Audiology Unit of Mansoura New General Hospital. Results: Tympanometry (1000Hz) was with type A in 152 ears and type B in 48 ears. Ipsilateral acoustic reflexes were present in 146 ears and absent in 54 ears. In 2nd step, tympanometry (1000Hz) was type A in 29 right ears and 29 in left ears and type B in 8 right ears and 8 left ears. In 3rd step, tympanometry (1000Hz) with type A was in 22 ears and type B in 4 ears. Normal click auditory brainstem response (ABR) threshold was found in 17 ears and abnormal click ABR threshold was found in 9 ears. Conclusion: 1000 Hz tympanometry has to be a component of the NHS test battery. The HFT has to be considered for NHS programs to detect the middle ear pathological conditions in infants. We consider the problem of identifying the acoustic impedance of a wall surface from noisy pressure measurements in a closed room using a Bayesian approach. The room acoustics are modeled by the interior Helmholtz equation with impedance boundary conditions. The aim is to compute moments of the acoustic impedance to estimate a suitable density function of the impedance coefficient. For the computation of moments we use ratio estimators and Monte Carlo sampling. We consider two different experimental scenarios. In the first scenario, the noisy measurements correspond to a wall modeled by impedance boundary conditions. In this case, the Bayesian algorithm uses a model that is (up to the noise) consistent with the measurements and our algorithm is able to identify acoustic impedance with high accuracy. In the second scenario, the noisy measurements come from a coupled acoustic-structural problem, modeling a wall made of glass, whereas the Bayesian algorithm still uses a model with impedance boundary conditions. In this case, the parameter identification model is inconsistent with the measurements and therefore is not capable to represent them well. Nonetheless, for particular frequency bands the Bayesian algorithm identifies estimates with high likelihood. Outside these frequency bands the algorithm fails. We discuss the results of both examples and possible reasons for the failure of the latter case for particular frequency values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultrasonic focusing transducers have broad prospects in advanced ultrasonic non-destructive testing fields. However, conventional focusing methods that use acoustic concave lenses can disrupt the acoustic impedance matching condition, thereby adversely affecting the sensitivity of the transducers. In this paper, an active focusing planar ultrasonic transducer is designed and presented to achieve a focusing effect with a higher sensitivity. An electrode pattern consisting of multiple concentric rings is designed, which is inspired by the structure of Fresnel Zone Plates (FZP). The structural parameters are optimized using finite element simulation methods. A prototype of the transducer is manufactured with electrode patterns made of conductive silver paste using silk screen-printing technology. Conventional focusing transducers using an acoustic lens and an FZP baffle are also manufactured, and their focusing performances are comparatively tested. The experimental results show that our novel transducer has a focal length of 16 mm and a center frequency of 1.16 MHz, and that the sensitivity is improved by 23.3% compared with the conventional focusing transducers. Background: Ionoacoustics is a promising approach to reduce the range uncertainty in proton therapy. A miniature‐sized optical hydrophone (OH) was used as a measuring device to detect weak ionoacoustic signals with a high signal‐to‐noise ratio in water. However, further development is necessary to prevent wave distortion because of nearby acoustic impedance discontinuities while detection is conducted on the patient's skin. Purpose: A prototype of the probe head attached to an OH was fabricated and the required dimensions were experimentally investigated using a 100‐MeV proton beam from a fixed‐field alternating gradient accelerator and k‐Wave simulations. The beam range of the proton in a tissue‐mimicking phantom was estimated by measuring γ‐waves and spherical ionoacoustic waves with resonant frequency (SPIRE). Methods: Four sizes of probe heads were fabricated from agar blocks for the OH. Using the prototype, the γ‐wave was detected at distal and lateral positions to the Bragg peak on the phantom surface for proton beams delivered at seven positions. For SPIRE, independent measurements were performed at distal on‐ and off‐axis positions. The range positions were estimated by solving the linear equation using the sensitive matrix for the γ‐wave and linear fitting of the correlation curve for SPIRE; they were compared with those measured using a film. Results: The first peak of the γ‐wave was undistorted with the 3 × 3 × 3‐cm3 probe head used at the on‐axis and 3‐cm off‐axis positions. The range positions estimated by the γ‐wave agreed with the film‐based range in the depth direction (the maximum deviation was 0.7 mm), although a 0.6–2.1 mm deviation was observed in the lateral direction. For SPIRE, the deviation was <1 mm for the two measurement positions. Chiral metamaterials have been proven to possess many appealing mechanical phenomena, such as negative Poisson's ratio, high-impact resistance, and energy absorption. This work extends the applications of chiral metamaterials to underwater sound insulation. Various chiral metamaterials with low acoustic impedance and proper stiffness are inversely designed using the topology optimization scheme. Low acoustic impedance enables the metamaterials to have a high and broadband sound transmission loss (STL), while proper stiffness guarantees its robust acoustic performance under a hydrostatic pressure. As proof-of-concept demonstrations, two specimens are fabricated and tested in a water-filled impedance tube. Experimental results show that, on average, over 95% incident sound energy can be isolated by the specimens in a broad frequency range from 1 kHz to 5 kHz, while the sound insulation performance keeps stable under a certain hydrostatic pressure. Nondestructive testing (NDT) is of paramount importance in ensuring the safe operation of equipment. Among various NDT techniques, ultrasonic NDT has garnered widespread attention due to its high sensitivity, fast speed, and accurate defect location. Photoacoustic NDT, a burgeoning field in ultrasonic NDT, is particularly attractive due to its immunity to electromagnetic interference. However, existing photoacoustic NDT systems suffer from inadequate excitation intensity and complex ultrasonic signal characteristics, impeding large-area NDT and accurate crack visualization. In this study, we present an all-fiber photoacoustic system for large-area NDT. To address the issues, we have developed a photoacoustic generator unit that can be optimized and controlled to generate stronger ultrasonic signals. Furthermore, we have employed mode decomposition to simplify the detected ultrasonic signals by mitigating the acoustic impedance mismatch-induced mode mixing problem in the system. As a result, the technology allows for large-area crack monitoring of up to 50*50 cm2 with an improved resolution of 1 mm. This article presents a metal matrix composite material consisting of NiTi wires embedded in nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR) that preserves NBR's inherent acoustic characteristics while enabling acoustic modification through the NiTi phase transition induced by stress and temperature. The macroscopic mechanical parameters of transversely isotropic NiTi-NBR composite materials are derived by means of a secondary bridging model that takes into account interfacial phases. On this basis, the acoustic impedance properties and absorption coefficient of composite materials were examined as a function of NiTi volume fraction using the transfer matrix method. The accuracy and effectiveness of the theoretical method were verified by comparing the calculated results with finite element simulation. The research results indicated that regulating the volume fraction of NiTi can lead to the anticipated value of the input impedance of composite materials, improving impedance matching with media like water and rubber, which offers novel insights and a theoretical foundation for the development of underwater sound-absorbing materials. Acoustic impedance is the product of the density of a material and the speed at which an acoustic wave travels through it. Understanding this relationship is essential because low acoustic impedance values are closely associated with high porosity, facilitating the accumulation of more hydrocarbons. In this study, we estimate the acoustic impedance based on nine different inputs of seismic attributes in addition to depth and two-way travel time using three supervised machine learning models, namely extra tree regression (ETR), random forest regression, and a multilayer perceptron regression algorithm using the scikit-learn library. Our results show that the R2 of multilayer perceptron regression is 0.85, which is close to what has been reported in recent studies. However, the ETR method outperformed those reported in the literature in terms of the mean absolute error, mean squared error, and root-mean-squared error. The 1-3 piezoelectric composite is the key component of the acoustic transducer, which is widely used in detection, due to the high energy conversion efficiency, cheap raw material, and low aging. To reveal the influence of epoxy mixture, used to connect the piezoelectric column, on the composite performance, a 1-3 piezoelectric composite model was built. The effects of mixture properties on the impedance curves, vibration mode, and deformation displacement of the composite were determined. Six 1-3 piezoelectric composites with different filling mixture properties, by changing the glass microspheres' mass ratio in the epoxy, were prepared and measured to validate the model. The results showed that with the increase in the proportion of the glass microsphere in the epoxy mixture, the vibration coupling of the piezoelectric composites was gradually eliminated. The acoustic impedance was reduced by 12%. The electromechanical coupling coefficient and effective electromechanical coupling coefficient were increased by 5.4% and 8.3%, respectively. The density and Young's modulus decrease in filling mixture can significantly improve piezoelectric composite performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new method for estimating petrophysical properties from elastic well log or seismic data is evaluated on data from the Carnarvon Basin, Northwest Australia. The study has utilized well and seismic inversion data covering part of the Triassic‐aged fluvio‐deltaic Mungaroo Formation on the Exmouth Plateau. The method applied is based on several recently published papers to use acoustic impedance, velocity ratio Vp/Vs and estimated constants to calculate clay volume (VCL), effective porosity and water saturation (SW). The case study showed exceptional results on well data. A strong match is observed between petrophysically derived VCL, effective porosity and SW and the estimates derived from elastic logs. When applied to seismic inversion volumes, pay in the wells is predicted from seismic, and porosity of the sands can be estimated with confidence. Petrophysical properties for nearby direct hydrocarbon indicator–supported prospects could also be evaluated, although an imprint of the direct hydrocarbon indicator was observed on the VCL prediction, and overall predictions are less than expected based on regional well results. Using these results, a minor modification is proposed to the equations used, and a workflow is derived to enable easy application to other projects. The modified approach was validated on the well data from the original publication.
