Background: Un-acclimatized individuals may experience acute altitude illness. Thus, the current study investigated the impact of short-term intermittent normobaric hypoxia (NH) combined with light exercise on the acclimatization of cardiorespiratory function to altitude in inactive adults. Methods: This quasi-experimental study recruited 10 inactive university students (age: 26.3 ± 2.53 years). All participants were instructed to perform light exercise while exposed to intermittent NH (15%) (2 h/d) for 2 weeks continuously. The heart rate (HR), relative oxygen consumption (VO2 mL/kg/min), minute ventilation (VE), VO2/HR, and respiratory frequency (RF) were measured. Results: Results illustrated a significant improvement in participants' cardiorespiratory functions by 10 days after exposure to NH, as compared to day 1 of exposure, based on their HR, RF, and VE responses at rest and HR, RF, VE, VO2, VO2/kg, and VO2/HR during light exercise. Resting-state values had returned to the pre-NH exposure levels after 10 days of intermittent NH exposure. Furthermore, values measured during light exercise were significantly decreased on days 10 and 14 as compared to day 1 of NH exposure. Conclusion: This study concluded that as few as 10 days of exposure to intermittent NH (pO2 = 15%) combined with light exercise may improve the acclimation to NH of 15% pO2 in inactive adults. African-American literature, its culture, and its heritage reached their pinnacle during the 1980s. Numerous Women writers engendered dominant masterpieces that lured enormous acclamation and criticism. Alice Walker had already dejected and dissociated the audience's persuasion with the publication of The Color Purple in 1982. Walker elected and pursued some of the characters' tales in The Temple of My Familiar from The Color Purple, seven years after the novel's publication. The Temple of My Familiar, published in 1989, is contemplated as Walker's most preeminent work, on account of the novel's plot, themes and leitmotifs, character evolution, and setting. This fiction was criticized for its intellectualism and discrepancy, or it failed to pique the attention of critics and readers, whereas these days, its predecessor still has the majority of the reminiscence and prominence. The pivotal aim of this paper is to target the unaccustomed essence of love and human interrelations and retrace the literary ethics in the selected novel. Fanny and Suwelo, one of the prime couples in the fiction, exhibit diverse aspects to ponder before disclosing the relationship between existence and love. It is quite likely that all five inscriptions from Neoklaudiopolis/Vezirköprü presented in this paper are acclamations. They originate from Christian context. The objects on which they are placed – apart from one capital – cannot be identified with absolute certainty. In one case, it is probably a sarcophagus, in another a part of a pilaster, in the other two cases plinths – or, although less likely, weights of wine or oil presses. Four of the objects are decorated with crosses, whereby in two cases the cross is interpreted as The Tree of Life. The motif ›The Cross as Tree of Life‹ is quite common in Neoklaudiopolis. It is depicted in several designs, especially on sarcophagi and on architectural elements such as capitals and on a slab that may be regarded as an altar screen. This is documented by photographs. The sarcophagi that are known from the territory of Neoklaudiopolis and that can be identified as Christian are compiled in an appendix. They are all decorated with crosses in different design varieties. In one extraordinary case, the head of a bovine is depicted between two crosses. In a second appendix, stones decorated with crosses originating from the territory of Neoklaudiopolis are presented. It is certain that two of them are press weights, another two are very likely to be press weights, and with others it is at least arguable. The recording of the inscriptions, sarcophagi and press weights was done by Eckart Olshausen and Gerhard Kahl between 1988 and 1990.

Acclamation as political form of communication has been used to understand political phenomena by a range of 20th century thinkers and recently has been used to analyze social media. However, if the notion of social media as acclamation is to be fruitful, it should be closely connected to inherent features of social media as technology and should be available to empirical analysis. To do so, this study follows a mixed-method approach. First, we offer a theoretical analysis of acclamation and how it links to each of the constituent parts of social media. Next, we build upon this theoretical analysis to study acclamation and social media as a matter of empirical data analysis to analyse the Tweets of the US-Presidents Obama, Trump and Biden. We apply regression models to measure the effects of acclamation. Our results show that acclamation is an essential feature of political communication but different for each President. This is in parts caused by the algorithms of Twitter which have different effects on the communication of the three Presidents. Our findings expand the idea of social media as acclamation and prove its relevance to the current political discourse.

One of the most distinctive rituals of Roman imperial accession was the adlocutio , the speech delivered by the new emperor to a military assembly, which can be documented from the first to the fifth centuries a.d. This article seeks to explain the extraordinary endurance of this neglected genre of speech by examining its origins, setting and content. After outlining the unusual nature of the accession adlocutio when set against both earlier and contemporary Mediterranean practice, the first half of this article traces its origins to the military culture of the late Roman Republic. In particular, the adlocutio is related to two other rituals which rose to new prominence in the era of the Civil Wars: the acclamation of the victorious general as imperator and the granting of military gifts. In the second part of this article, the setting for the typical adlocutio of the Imperial era is discussed using the often-problematic evidence of our ancient historical sources. The content of the speech itself is then reconstructed primarily through a close reading of our one surviving example, the brief address of Leo I preserved by Peter the Patrician. Finally, the evidence for the origins and content of the speech are brought together in an argument for the speech's survival as a useful tool for emperors seeking to establish a permanent bond with the soldiers they commanded. The article locates the aesthetics of law within modern legal knowledge, moving from the analysis of Kelsen's and Schmitt's theories. Schmitt's reading of Hobbes becomes the starting point in which political theology can be understood as an iconic legal theology, since the image of Leviathan. Legendre expands the reconstruction of the legal aesthetic model to the entire second millennium, moving from the appropriation of the imperial role of the Roman Pontiff. The article reads the frontispiece of Vico's Scienza Nuova as a possible alternative to the Hobbesian model and as the foundation of contemporary visual legal studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article is devoted to my own Lenten choral and organ music. At first, I introduce my mo- tives for undertaking creative activity, which include, among others, the atmosphere of my family house (my father, Wojciech Łukaszewski, was a composer). My inspiration to take up choral music was a ten-year collaboration with the choir of the Academy of Catholic Theology (currently Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński University in Warsaw) under the management of the Reverend Kazimierz Szymonik. In the latter part of the article, I introduce my choral works, list the titles and then focus strictly on Passion and Paschal music. I present the circumstances in which those pieces were created, the details of their first performances and recordings, the texts they used and, furthermore, analyze them, paying attention to the most distinctive features of my composing technique and style.

The dual character of acclamations, religious and political, makes of acclamations a perfect place to explore theological-political transferences. Acclamations were central in ancient times in order to constitute a community and to show its acceptance, whether they took place in a republic while deciding in assemblies or during the accession of an emperor. The Christian-Church adopted this imperial ceremonial style with the introduction of imperial laudes into the Church and accommodated it to its own needs. Modern times recovered the magic of acclamations in order to give space to the vox populi in the constitution of the political community. The aim of the present article is to explore the centrality of acclamations in religious and political life through three key texts: Kantorowicz's Laudes regiae, Peterson's Heis Theos and Schmitt's Volksentscheid und Volksbegehren. These texts are interrelated and could be considered a particular case of a broad hidden dialogue between these three authors. The theological-political character and evolution of the practice of acclamations in the West coming from the East shows that the line that divided the sacred from the secular has been always far from fixed, and was instead subject to fluctuation, pressures from every side, and constant renegotiation. The study of conditions, under which the existence of an "absolute" best winner can be assured, is a hot topic in the field of social choice. Unanimity is an evident example of a condition under which the winner is obvious. However, many more properties weaker than unanimity have been analysed in literature: the presence of a Condorcet winner, strong stochastic transitivity, the presence of a candidate that Borda dominates all other candidates, etc. Unfortunately, one could easily find a prominent ranking rule, for which the outcome does not agree with these relaxed conditions. In this study, we aim to identify a condition weaker than unanimity, but under which the social outcome is still obvious. This condition, defined as the conjunction of three properties already studied by the present authors and hereinafter referred to as acclamation, will be proven to be a meeting point for the most prominent ranking rules in social choice theory, and will be used for introducing an intuitively appealing ranking rule. This article approaches social media from the theory of the religio-political practice of acclamation revived by Agamben and following twentieth-century social and political thought and theology (of Weber, Peterson, Schmitt, Kantorowicz). It supplements that theory by more recent political-theoretical, historical and sociological investigations and regards acclamation as a ‘social institution’ following Mauss. Acclamation is a practice that forms publics, whether as the direct presence of the ‘people’, mass-mediated ‘public opinion’, or a ‘public mood’ decipherable through countless social media postings. The article surveys issues of differential geographies of access, weighting of posts, value-creation, orality and gesture, algorithmic governmentality, and Big Data and knowledge production. It argues that social media constitute a public from a mass of individualized, private postings. It concludes that they make possible forms of political calculability and action, yet are continuous with ritual and liturgical elements of political life. During the fourteenth century, Venetian chronicles, art, and ceremony fostered provocative analogies between angelic annunc ia tion and the political voice of the Venetian populace. Such analogies imagined a city whose civic and heavenly members were united through the sound of unanimity. At the intersection of the state's civic and celestial bodies stood the doge, considered to be the image of the Republic and of its patron, Saint Mark. A complex of sung ceremonies and musical compositions addressed to the doge dramatized the notion that the voice, as a ritual instrument, could en gender real political or spiritual change in the state and its leaders. Performances of acclamations to the doge positioned him within Venice's sacred and civic hierarchies, while state art and ceremony forged symbolic resemblances between ducal acclamation and angelic annunciation. A repertory of occasional motets evidences polyphonic play with the notion that vocal rituals c entered on the doge could activate the spiritual ideals of the state: the anonymous Marce, Marcum imitaris (c. 1365) draws a sonic analogy between spiritual likeness and musical imitation in order to dramatize the concept of the doge as Mark's image, whereas Johannes Ciconia's Venecie mundi splendor/Michael qui Stena domus elides a text dedicated to the Annunciate Virgin with one addressed to the doge, creating musical echoes and simultaneities in its praises of Venice's temporal and celestial leaders. The changes in the antioxidant enzymes activity, total protein and proline content and their correlations with freezing tolerance (FT) (expressed as LT) were investigated at 11 different olive cultivars at cold-acclimation (CA, in February) and non-acclimation (NA, in August) stages. Leaf samples were collected from each cultivar and were divided into two groups. The first group was immediately frozen in liquid nitrogen for further biochemical analysis. The second ones was subjected to different freezing temperatures (−5, −10, −15 and −20 °C) for 10 h, in order to determine their FT. The unfrozen control samples were kept at 4 °C. The results showed that Fishomi, Mission and Shengeh were the most freezing tolerant among other cultivars. In contrast, Zard, Manzanilla and Amigdalolia were the most sensitive ones. The cold acclimation enhanced the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and total protein content. However, proline content and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) activity did not change or even decreased slightly at CA stage, compare to those samples at NA stage. It was found that LT to be closely correlated to POD, CAT, and PPO activity at CA and NA stages. Overall, higher leaf POD, CAT, and PPO activity could be used as important selection criteria in screening tolerant olive cultivars for cold zone climatic. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper discusses the regalia and ceremonies of the United Kingdom, starting with a brief reference to the fate of the Welsh and Scottish regalia at the time of the Edwardian conquest, followed by the history of the Scottish regalia and ceremonies after the return of independence. The coronation ceremony in England evolved over one thousand years, from the election and acclamation of a king by his warriors, and was modified by the acceptance of succession by primogeniture and the introduction of the anointing of the sovereign under the influence of Christianity, making his person sacred. The subsequent evolution of the coronation ceremony in England, and after 1706 the United Kingdom, is reviewed. At first, regalia were personal, but a set of regalia kept at Westminster Abbey was claimed to have been deposited there by Edward the Confessor to serve for the coronation of future kings, and the regalia used subsequently until their destruction by the Commonwealth, after the overthrow of the monarchy in 1649, were called Saint Edward’s regalia. A new set of regalia were made after the Restoration of the monarchy in 1660, and the principal items of the Crown jewels are reviewed. This paper ends with a short discussion of the ceremony of the opening of Parliament, and finally mentions the other ceremonies at which the sovereign was present in the House of Lords. The history of both the coronation ceremony and the opening of Parliament shows a large degree of continuity, for at least the last five hundred years, with a brief interval during the Commonwealth.

While this ‘extraordinary’ book appears as an intermezzo within the Homo Sacer series (Negri, 2008), it supports two fundamental theses with its own philological, epigraphic, liturgical and religious-historical research, and a close reading of figures such as Ernst Kantorowicz and Marcel Mauss. These theses concern political power first as an articulation of sovereign reign and economic government and, secondly, as constituted by acclamations and glorification. These can be approached theoretically through its author’s engagement with Michel Foucault’s genealogy of governmentality and with the Erik Peterson/Carl Schmitt debate on the closure of political theology. Agamben’s reformulation of power and his derivation of liberal governmentality from the theological oikonomia prove convincing. A renewed analytics of power and politics of resistance should be possible, however, without recourse to a project seeking to deactivate all profane powers including those of public bureaucracies. Abstract So far, scholarship on early Christian liturgical prayer to Christ has neglected two relevant texts of Tertullian: De Spect. 25.5 and Apol. 2.6. This article points out that both texts reflect Tertullian's awareness and approval of the liturgical practice of addressing Christ in prayer. It is suggested that in the pre-Arian period, liturgical prayer to Christ was more accepted, prevalent, and established than is commonly held in scholarship. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article deals with a surprising practice of placing a Torah scroll on a funeral bier and crying out: "This one fulfilled what is written in that one." An allusion to this custom already appears in a Tannaitic haggadah that tells about the bringing of Joseph's bones to burial in the Land of Israel. This practice seems to run counter to the tendency to distance the corpse from the realm of the sacred. I seek to examine it through literary motifs from eulogies and depictions of the death of various individuals, and through artistic findings from the realm of funerary art. This examination leads to conclusions about the significance of the presence of the Torah scroll in the context of funerals and burial rituals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Daniel arap Moi ruled Kenya using a strategic mixture of ethnic favouritism, state repression and marginalisation of opposition forces, utilising violence, detention and torture. State predation featured, with looting of finances, land grabbing and property seizure. Moi saw his rule coming to an end in 2002, given a ‘two-term limit’ under political liberalisation. From 1998 on, Moi engaged in a carefully calculated strategy to manage the presidential succession in his and his party's favour. In this article, Moi's strategy, the reasons for its ultimate failure, and the short-lived triumph of a new popularly elected regime are analysed in relation to three pillars of Kenyan politics: ethnic representation, resource accumulation and distribution, and a system of unbounded politics that ensures that party loyalty is transient.
