Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (Aboriginal) young people seek information and access health services for their sexual health needs. This study examined Aboriginal young people's perspectives on sexual health services and sex education in Australia. Overall, 51 Aboriginal people aged 16–26 years were interviewed by peer researchers in Sydney, Australia in 2019–2020. The findings suggest that the internet was used to assess information quickly and confidentially, but Aboriginal young people questioned its reliability and accuracy. Family, Elders and peers were seen as sources of advice because they had real-life experience and highlighted intergenerational learning that occurs in Aboriginal communities. School-based sex education programmes had mixed reviews, with a preference for programmes delivered by external specialists providing anonymity, clear and accurate information about sex and relationships and positive approaches to sex education, including how to gain consent before sex. There was a need identified for school-based programmes to better consider the needs of Aboriginal young people, including those who identified as LGBTQI +. Aboriginal Medical Services were highly valued for providing culturally safe access to services, while sexual health clinics were valued for providing specialised confidential clinical services with low levels of judgement. Abstract Background Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services are fundamental to improving the health and welfare of Aboriginal peoples. A key element that contributes to the effectiveness of these services are Aboriginal health and wellbeing staff. However, Aboriginal health and wellbeing staff often suffer high rates of stress and burnout. Current literature focuses on proposed strategies to increase staff retention in Aboriginal Health Services, yet, there is limited information available showcasing what has actually worked. Method This was an intrinsic strengths-based case study of one regional Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Service. Semi-structured research yarning interviews were conducted with past and present staff employed in health and wellbeing roles to highlight the factors that staff felt contributed to their retention. Results Ten interviews were conducted between February and April 2018. Six key themes emerged: social accountability, teamwork and collaboration, cultural safety, supervision, professional advancement, and recognition. We add to the literature by identifying the importance of bi-directional communication, and showing that social accountability, teamwork and collaboration, cultural safety, supervision, professional advancement, and recognition continue to be important factors that contribute to health and wellbeing staff retention in Aboriginal Health Services. Conclusion This exemplar Aboriginal Health Service may provide insights into future strategies to improve staff retention in other health services.

A Masterclass Program was developed to strengthen the research capacity of staff within Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) and featured three Masterclasses delivered across Australia, including Understanding Research, Undertaking Research and Research Evaluation. A mixed-method process and impact evaluation of the Masterclass Program was undertaken. The process evaluation examined the reach of the Program and the impact evaluation comprised an online survey (n = 45) and semi-structured interviews (n = 21) with Masterclass participants. During 2014–17, 27 Masterclasses were delivered to 260 people, including predominantly ACCHO personnel but also Indigenous doctors and research institute staff who work closely with the ACCHO sector. Most survey respondents felt the Masterclasses improved their understanding of research and their willingness to participate in and undertake research. The qualitative analysis confirmed this and suggested that Masterclasses were implemented in a supportive learning environment which led to increased research capacity (increased research awareness, changed perceptions, increased understanding, critical thinking and new confidence) and ultimately enhanced research engagement (willingness to participate, motivating others, empowered critique of research partners and proposals, interest in further research training). Objective To better understand Indigenous patient non-attendance at medical specialty appointments by learning from the patients attending their scheduled outreach ophthalmology clinic appointment. Design, setting and participants A qualitative study using face-to-face, semi-structured interviews with 69 Indigenous Australian ophthalmology patients and 8 clinic workers at one urban and one rural Aboriginal Medical Service (AMS) over the period from April 2015 to November 2015. Main outcome measures Explored motivations and enablers for attending patients to guide best practice for specialist outreach clinics. Results The main themes emerging from the interviews included: clinic staff are persistent in their efforts to organise outreach ophthalmology clinics; both motivated and reluctant patients attend medical appointments; and reluctant patients are more likely to be unaware of their referral pathway. Health literacy and clinic staff triggered the reluctant patient to attend. Conclusion Indigenous patients attend their outreach ophthalmology appointments based on various motivations. Clinic staff who recognise reluctant patients can communicate through a sensitive, patient-centred approach that helps the patient realise the importance of the appointment thus creating motivation and promoting attendance. The efforts of the clinic staff, through their patient reminding, transport provision and patient-centred communication suggest that they are the enablers of Indigenous patient attendance at AMS outreach ophthalmology clinics.
