The history of imperial dynasties in West Asia is replete with examples of remarkable urban foundations. Two notable instances are the Sasanian Ardašīr-xwarrah and the Abbasid Madīnat al-Salām, which can be classified as cosmic cities or heterotopias. This article examines the utopian foundations of these heterotopias. To this end, it analyzes four religious and imperial spaces: the representation of the earth and sky in the Zoroastrian cosmography, Yima's Vara according to the Avestan texts, Ardašīr-xwarrah, and finally, Madīnat al-Salām. This investigation aims to ascertain the extent to which the spatial characteristics of each of these spaces have been utilized in the production of the subsequent architectural forms. Similarly, it examines the development of the cosmological and eschatological paradise in relation to the Achaemenian and Sasanian royal gardens. The theoretical framework of this study is based on Michael Foucault's notion of heterotopia, which has been further developed by Henri Lefebvre's theory of space. The conceptual metaphor theory offers a cognitive linguistic foundation for elucidating the projections of utopias and heterotopias onto one another. To this end, the article focuses on the conceptual metaphor GOD IS A KING. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: This research investigates the most important efforts made by the Abbasid Caliphs against the people of innovation and deviation. They had successful efforts throughout the Abbasid era to eliminate the deviants and prevent them from carrying out their activities. The current research also aimed to investigate how the deviants had worked to undermine the Abbasid authority and the Islamic religion, and how they exaggerated in their words about religion and began to spread their deviant ideas and beliefs in an attempt to restore their glory and ancient authority. It also aimed to shed light on how the Abbasid caliphs face their danger, limit their influence, and eliminate some of their leaders. Methodology: To achieve the objectives of this study, the researchers adopted the historical descriptive approach when presenting the position of the Abbasid Caliphate on intellectual deviation, represented by the position of the Abbasid Caliphs against the intellectual deviation that appeared clearly in the Abbasid era by referring to specialized historical sources and references, dealing accurately while employing those sources to reach the most accurate information and clarify the position of the Abbasid Caliphate on those deviations. Results: The study showed many important results that were obtained during the research period, perhaps the most prominent of which are the following:1- The Abbasid era witnessed dangerous deviant intellectual movements carried out by the enemies of Islam to undermine Arabism and Islamic culture and strike the authority of the Arabs, by entering the ranks of Islamic sects and inclining them towards intellectual deviation.2- The Abbasid Caliphs worked to make efforts to eliminate them and work to cut off their continuous movements throughout the Abbasid era.3- Ending the issue of saying that the Qur’an was created, through the successful4- The Abbasid sultans had similar efforts to the efforts of the caliphs to eliminate heresies and deviations by the Ghaznavid and Seljuk sultans and Sultan Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi.Conclusion: The study recommends the necessity of emphasizing on researchers to study intellectual deviations in depth and to know the reasons that led to their emergence, who is behind them and the goals they seek to achieve. It also recommend to work on refuting the claims and falsehoods of those movements and rejecting their ideas that are foreign to Islamic society.

- Abstract
A group of coins excavated at Qasr-e Abu Nasr, Shiraz, in south-central Iran, now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, was studied and analyzed to examine the minting processes and to reconsider the numismatic history of the site. For this purpose, forty-three gold-, silver-, and copper-based coins were studied and analyzed by micro-X-ray fluorescence, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and metallographic techniques. The results of the analyses showed a wide range of alloy compositions. The gold coins are comprised of impure gold and electrum, while the silver coins are made of either near pure silver or debased silver copper. The copper-based coins are struck from a range of alloys, namely impure copper, tin bronze, leaded copper, and high-leaded tin bronze, closely correlated to the date and place of minting. The results of this interdisciplinary study provide new insights into the archaeology of Qasr-e Abu Nasr, as well as present new information about the history of minting on the Iranian Plateau. The Abbasid caliphs were interested in holidays and celebrations, and their dining tables varied within the palaces, and the councils of mans and singing spread in their time the glories of the Arab nation, and in that period, singer Ibrahim Al-Mosli, as well as the son of Caliph Mahdi Muhammad, who combined singing and poetry and was fond of this art, and in addition, Al-Jawari and slaves participated in singing inside the palaces of the caliphs. Although many of the caliphs preferred to sing and praise, the Caliph al-Muhaddi prevented the councils of mankind during a period of wisdom, and the celebrations had a great place in the hearts of the caliphs and decorated for this day, including all holidays. Food tables cost the caliphs a lot of money, causing financial damage to the Abbas .

The area of al-Ḥrḍah in the oasis of Khaybar is today an agricultural area on the fringe of the palm grove, dedicated mainly to cereal crops. The remains of twentieth-century hydraulic structures show the investment needed for agricultural extension, in an area that is characterized by the absence of springs. As attested by the numerous remains of the Abbasid period in this area, a first phase of expansion of the settlement outside the limits of the oasis occurred here around the late Abbasid period. Our research suggests extensive agricultural practices during this period, which extended beyond the centre of the oasis, as well as the development of settlements in the Abbasid period. The complex appears to constitute a true multi-component site, associating agricultural and pastoral activities, which is completed by the discovery of khan-like structures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This research investigates the study and publication of the inscriptions of six Abbasid dinars dating back to the era of Caliph Harun al-Rashid (170-193 AH / 786-809 AD) and preserved in the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo that had not previously been published or studied. These dinars are: (1) a dinar minted in the year (172 AH), bearing the name of Musa; (2) a dinar minted in the year (173 AH), bearing the name Omar; (3) a dinar minted in the year (185 AH), bearing the name of Muhammad al-Amin, Crown Prince; (4) a dinar minted in the year (186 AH), bearing the name Jaafar; (5) a dinar minted in the year (188 AH); (6) a dinar minted in the year (190 AH), bearing the phrase "for the Caliph".The researcher classified inscriptions and these six dinars into six styles that were examined in a chronological order. Each style, with its unique writing and decorations, is separately described. This is followed by an analysis and interpretation of these writings, whether they were names such as Musa, Omar, Jaafar, Muhammad Al-Amin, or titles such as: Emir, Ibn Amir al-Mu'minin, for the caliph, in light of different circumstances. There follows an overview of the features unique to each of the six models with its inscriptions and decorations, such features which do not exist in the other five models of these dinars. Thereafter, the researcher pointed to the dinar that is attributed to each type of the six dinars in question, and the number of his plate. Finally, reference was made to some published examples for each of them, whether preserved in the Museum of Islamic Art in Cairo, or the National Museum of Qatar. Inscriptions of the first model is distinguished by bearing the name of Musa, referring to Musa bin Isa al-Abbasi, who took over the Emirate of Egypt three times. The second model is also distinguished by including the name Omar, referring to Omar bin Ghaylan, or to Omar bin Oran. As for the third style, it is distinguished by carrying two margins of inscription on its back, including the name of the caliph's heir. The fourth type includes the name of Jaafar, referring to Jaafar bin Yahya bin Baramak, the minister of the Caliph Harun al-Rashid. The fifth type is also distinguished by its inclusion of the word caliph. Finally, the sixth model has no names.

This text supplements another, a paper presented a decade ago on the portrayal of Umayyad rulers in Chronography of Theophanes the Confessor (B. Cecota, Islam, the Arabs and Umayyad Rulers according to Theophanes the Confessor’s Chronography, “Studia Ceranea” 2, 2012, p. 97–111). I am limiting myself here to discussing only those source remarks which directly concern one of the Abbasid Caliphs, or alternatively, to narratives structured in such a manner that they implied certain traits of a ruler. General remarks concerning the portrayal of the entire dynasty have been included, both in the main text and in the footnotes, only where this was necessary for the understanding of the context in which the Caliphs’ descriptions appear.

EXCOMMUNICATION (Catholic Church) , *MUSLIMS - Abstract
This article considers the role of the Muslim authorities in enforcing Christian excommunication. After setting out late Roman precedents for the use of excommunication, it examines four cases in the period 650-850 in which the patriarch opposed other high-ranking clergy. It argues that Muslim authorities were increasingly willing to intervene in these disputes to support the legitimacy of the patriarch. The significance of this relationship is illustrated by the disintegration of the patriarch's to bring his opponents into line during periods of civil war, where the caliph's government was challenged. Muslim rulers and law enforcers used coercion as an evidentiary method for criminal cases during the Abbasid period. These coercive procedures consisted of imprisonment, threats of beatings, and lashings. Coercive interrogations were shaped by the practices of the shurṭa (criminal magistrates and police chiefs), based on military methods, administrative precedents, and discretion, not on fiqh (Islamic substantive law). In the Abbasid era (300–500 A.H./900–1100 C.E.), government officials, such as Ibn Wahb (d. after 335/946), and even some jurists, particularly the chief judge al-Māwardī (d. 450/1058), legitimized these coercive practices by framing their use as a matter determined by authority and jurisdiction. By tracing the military-administrative genealogy of coercion, I seek to examine the methods and reasoning that constituted the criminal justice system that came to be known as siyāsa. Drawing on various administrative and literary sources, I examine a history of coercion in Islamic law beyond fiqh. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Born in the Iraqi city of Ḥire, Ḥunayn b. Ishaḳ had a Christian family of Arab descent. While the majority of the citizens of this community were attracted to trade, Ḥunayn developed an interest in medicine at a young age, which his father associated with the profession of pharmacist. This interest encouraged him to become more involved in the science of medicine. He received his first medicine education Yûhannâ b. Mâseveyh who was one of the leading scholars of his time on medicine. Huneyn was dismissed from his primary education by his tutor because of incompatibility with his tutor's temperament. Ḥunayn b. Ishaḳ travelled to the Byzantine cities to complete the preparations for the medical-scientific translations he wanted to carry out in the future. There he learned Greek well enough to translate medical works. As a qualified translator, he translated several books published in Greek into Arabic, mainly in the field of medicine. His works separate the two parts as translation and compilation. Upon hearing of Hunayn's accomplishment, the Abbasid caliph Ma'mûn elevated him to the position of the translator of Bayt al Hikma, which was the academy of science of his time. The present article summarises the methods pursued by Ḥunayn b. Ishaḳ within the framework of the principles that guided his scientific personality, as well as his achievements in the fields of medicine and translation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

And even though these divisions were at the beginning a way to bring loyalists from the abbasid family, the leaders and the poets but ultimately led to considerable economic damage when the Abbasids caliphate lost control over the fate of things , the division were lost when the authority of the state was weakened.

- Abstract
Husseini literature represents a great wealth that has enriched the Arab and international library, for it is truly a literature that can be classified within the fields of world literature, and the reason for this is due to the human dimension of the personality of Imam Hussein (peace be upon him). Ali al-Husayn (peace be upon him) suffered from great misfortunes, and they are many according to the nature of the Abbasid era that you studied. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

HEADS of state ,ARABS ,ISLAM ,CALIPHATE - Abstract
This text supplements another, a paper presented a decade ago on the portrayal of Umayyad rulers in Chronography of Theophanes the Confessor (B. Cecota, Islam, the Arabs and Umayyad Rulers according to Theophanes the Confessor's Chronography, "Studia Ceranea" 2, 2012, p. 97-111). I am limiting myself here to discussing only those source remarks which directly concern one of the Abbasid Caliphs, or alternatively, to narratives structured in such a manner that they implied certain traits of a ruler. General remarks concerning the portrayal of the entire dynasty have been included, both in the main text and in the footnotes, only where this was necessary for the understanding of the context in which the Caliphs' descriptions appear. This study investigates the term, and the poetry of, the Rearguard Poets (saqat al-shuʿaraʾ). It demonstrates through the investigation of both literary and non-literary texts of the Abbasid era that socio-political circumstances were major factors in forming the critical thinking of Abbasid critics as exemplified by al-Asmaʿi. The study argues that the grouping of the rearguard poets (without their consent) indicates that al-Asmaʿi and his fellow critics were interested in the poetry of this group not merely because they found in it the 'purity of the Arabic language' (fasaha) free from linguistic errors or because of the poets' eligibility to be included among the champion poets (fuhūl al-shuʿaraʾ); they were concerned with a much bigger issue: the mission to preserve Arab cultural identity, which those critics felt was being threatened by the changing atmosphere of Abbasid politics, as Chapter One shows. Reverting to the life of the desert and the Bedouin language to create a standard language (ʿArabiyya) marked an important stage in Arabic intellectual life which left its mark on generations of critics and the criteria they used in selecting and judging poetry, as Chapter Two shows. One of the most important features of Bedouin poetry is the predominance of unusual vocabulary (gharib), which served as both a linguistic treasury for philological critics and a foundation for creating a distinctive linguistic identity impregnable to foreigners, as Chapter Three demonstrates. In Chapter Four the norms and values of Bedouin society, which had the tribe at its centre, are analysed using examples of the poetry of the rearguard poets; these are identified with major themes occurring in the poets' panegyrical and satirical poetry. Turning to the inner-self and the persona of the poets themselves in Chapter Five, it becomes clear that although the critics relied on them to provide contemporary examples of Bedouin poetry, the poets for their part were preoccupied by their own interests and were trying to fight for their own causes: for their tribes, for their patrons and for their own concerns as a part of the wider society, which may or may not have intersected with the agendas and concerns of the critical and cultural authorities. Chapter Six examines the stylistic features of the poetry in question, and investigates the influence of Abbasid modern (muhdath) poetry and the refined (badiʿ) style. Examples of Ibn Harma's poetry in particular are thoroughly analysed due to his perceived position as a pioneer poet composing in the new style of the Abbasid era. The study has found that although the creation of the 'rearguard poets' group served the critical authorities' cultural and ideological interests rather than to show the linguistic and artistic value of their poetry, this does not imply that the representation of those poets as providers of good examples of Bedouin poetry in the Abbasid era is invalid. Moreover, the creation of this group was a reaction to the dominance of Persian culture in al-Asmaʿi's time. Furthermore, the poets' language, themes, motifs and imagery served to showcase the interests of early critics and their preferences in poetry despite the lack of compelling evidence that both parties collaborated to promote one unified and clearly stated purpose.

ABBASIDS , *SOLAR calendars , *LAUDATORY poetry , *CALIPHATE , *TAXATION - Abstract
A close reading of two poetical sources provides new data on the reforms of the fiscal schedule of the Abbasid state in the ninth century. This paper reconstructs the calendrical complications in those Abbasid regions that followed Iranian administrative tradition and its solar calendar without intercalations. Two reforms were issued under al-Mutawakkil and al-Muʿtaḍid to correct the fiscal schedule of these regions. A panegyric by al-Buḥturī allows us to confirm and contextualize al-Mutawakkil's reform in the final years of his caliphate. A few verses by Ibn al-Muʿtazz give a significant description of the close connection between al-Muʿtaḍid's reform of the Iranian New-Year's day and the construction of his public figure. 42. Stars and Planets in al-Mutanabbi's Poetry: A Thematic Artistic Study.
- Author

Aldhoon, Ibrahim Mustafa and Al-Sarahinah, Fatimah Hasan
- Abstract
This study aims to draw attention to an artistic phenomenon that al- Mutanabbi dealt with and disseminated in an important share of his poetry, to become part of his everyday life and the changes it witnessed. If al-Mutanabbi is well-known to people and the world, the study would stop at an issue that engaged the reader and provided him/her with enriching visual images about the poet's knowledge of stars and planets, particularly his deep awareness of their meanings and his understanding of their aesthetic dimensions and values, which are closely related to the subjects he was concerned with. In any case, this research will expose the poet's handling and use of celestial bodies in his poems as argumentative tools capable of rising above all considerations, as reflected in the terminology that informs textual structures. To this aim, the researchers explored, at the logical level, two major axes in Al-Mutanabbi's poetry: (1) the meanings of planets, stars and celestial bodies in the poetry of Al-Mutanabbi; and (2) the effect of employing the beauty of the sky and its pearls in making up the artistic image. This paper brings in new and not-well-known archaeological evidence to the debate over the Samarra Horizon, and reviews some preconceptions of the green splashed ware and blue painted ware through Chinese ceramic imports found in several sites in the Middle East from the eighth to tenth centuries CE. There has been mutual influence between Islamic and Chinese ceramics in the early Abbasid period, and there may be more than one explanation for their visual similarities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

47. THE CAROLINGIAN CUP FROM THE VALE OF YORK VIKING HOARD: ORIGINS OF ITS FORM AND DECORATIVE FEATURES.

Ager, Barry
- Abstract
In 2007, near Harrogate, in North Yorkshire, a Viking-period hoard was discovered with a Carolingian silver-gilt cup. This article examines this cup, highlighting Oriental, Central Asian and classical parallels in both metal and pottery for the cup's form and decoration. The overall significance of the cup's iconography has already been thoroughly discussed by Professor Egon Wamers, who proposed that the scenes on the cup are paralleled in the early ninth-century Stuttgart Psalter. This article proposes that Oriental forms and decorative elements in metalwork were channelled to the West through diplomatic contacts and trade by way of a complex of routes by land and sea, as well as possibly by refugees from Islamic conquests. A critical Reading in Shawqi Dhaif's The First Abbasid Era One of the conditions of scientific research is that the researcher should adhere to non –bias whether it is scientific or historical . The researcher should also be above leanings and passions. Where he has to convey the issues as they are especially the matters related to the biography of poets and men of letters . From the study, It followed that Dr.Shoaqi Dhaif in his book –the History of Arab Literature sided with some poets where he deemed them right, but that was against the principles of the scientific research.
