This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent advancements in computational methods for modeling, simulation, and optimization of complex systems in materials engineering, mechanical engineering, and energy systems. We identified key trends and highlighted the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) with traditional computational methods. Some of the cited works were previously published within the topic: "Computational Methods: Modeling, Simulations, and Optimization of Complex Systems"; thus, this article compiles the latest reports from this field. The work presents various contemporary applications of advanced computational algorithms, including AI methods. It also introduces proposals for novel strategies in materials production and optimization methods within the energy systems domain. It is essential to optimize the properties of materials used in energy. Our findings demonstrate significant improvements in accuracy and efficiency, offering valuable insights for researchers and practitioners. This review contributes to the field by synthesizing state-of-the-art developments and suggesting directions for future research, underscoring the critical role of these methods in advancing engineering and technological solutions. Adsorption refrigerators are a compelling ecological alternative to compressor refrigerators; global warming forces us to constantly look for alternative sources of energy and cold. Cold production in adsorption chillers is based on the use of heat generated by other processes running in the company. Waste heat from production processes, which has, until now, been irretrievably lost, is a potential source of energy for generating cold via an adsorption unit producing chilled water. Cooling optimizes the use of the heating network in summer and can lead to increased electricity production while reducing heat supply losses. Thus far, attempts to implement adsorption refrigerators for widespread use have not been successful as a result of the low efficiency of these devices; this is directly related to the poor heat and mass transfer conditions in the beds and heat exchangers of adsorption refrigerators. The solutions used so far, such as new working pairs, glued beds or modifications to the structure or cycle length, are still not strong enough for these devices. Therefore, it is necessary to look for new solutions. Using micro- and nanobubbles as media to increase mass and heat transfer in refrigerators is an innovative and pioneering solution. Thus, this document describes the most important features of micro- and nanobubble technology applications in adsorption refrigerators. The paper describes experiences in the modeling of complex geometry CLC equipment. The facility consists of two reactors: the air reactor and the fuel reactor. The fuzzy logic (FL) methods are used in the study for the prediction of NOx and SO2 from the solid fuels combustion in CLC equipment. Maximum errors between measured and predicted results are lower than 10 %.

An innovative idea, shown in the paper constitutes in the use of the fluidized bed of sorbent, instead of the conventional, fixed-bed, commonly used in the adsorption chillers. Bed–to–wall heat transfer coefficients for fixed and fluidized beds of adsorbent are determined. Sorbent particles diameters and velocities of fluidizing gas are discussed in the study. The calculations confirmed, that the bed–to–wall heat transfer coefficient in the fluidized bed of adsorbent is muchhigher than that in a conventional bed.

Adsorption chillers can be a promising part of sustainable development concept of the global economy due to the utilization of low grade thermal energy sources for cooling production. Therefore, research aiming at improving their performance i.e. Coefficient of Performance (COP) by optimizing the heat and mass transfer condition in the adsorption beds are crucial. Innovative modification of the sorbent layer structure are proposed in the paper in order to improve the heat transfer characteristics in the heat exchanger boundary layer. The analysis of desorption conditions in the parametric model of a coated adsorption bed construction is presented in the paper. The computational fluid dynamics with conjugate heat transfer analysis are used to determine the crucial input parameters for further analytical calculations. The heat transfer condition in novel coated design and a conventional fixed bed are compared in the paper. The developed computational model consisted of three subdomains representing heating water, heat exchanger material (copper) and sorbent (silica gel).

Chemical looping combustion (CLC) is one of the most advanced technologies allowing for the reduction in CO2 emissions during the combustion of solid fuels. The modified method combines chemical looping with oxygen uncoupling (CLOU) and in situ gasification chemical looping combustion (iG-CLC). As a result, an innovative hybrid chemical looping combustion came into existence, making the above two technologies complementary. Since the complexity of the CLC is still not sufficiently recognized, the study of this process is of a practical significance. The paper describes the experiences in the modelling of complex geometry CLC equipment. The experimental facility consists of two reactors: an air reactor and a fuel reactor. The paper introduces the fuzzy logic (FL) method as an artificial intelligence (AI) approach for the prediction of SO2 and NOx (i.e., NO + NO2) emissions from coal and biomass combustion carried out in air-firing; oxyfuel; iG-CLC; and CLOU conditions. One of the main disadvantages of conventional fixed-bed adsorption chillers is the low coefficient of performance due to the high voidage of the sorbent beds. The common method, which can help to handle this problem, is modifying the beds' design, including the application of fluidization. An innovative idea, shown in the article, constitutes in the use of the fluidized bed of sorbent, instead of the conventional, fixed-bed, commonly used nowadays in the adsorption chillers. Bed-to-wall heat transfer coefficients for fixed and fluidized beds of adsorbent are determined in the study. Effects of Sorbent particles diameters and velocities of fluidizing gas are discussed in the study. The calculations confirmed that the bed-to-wall heat transfer coefficient in the fluidized bed of adsorbent is much higher than that in a conventional bed. Global CO2 concentration level in the air is unprecedently high and should be rapidly and significantly reduced to avoid a global climate catastrophe. The work indicates the possibility of quickly lowering the impact of changes that have already happened and those we know will happen, especially in terms of the CO2 emitted and stored in the atmosphere, by implanting a virgin ivy plant on the available area of walls and roofs of the houses. The proposed concept of reducing CO2 from the atmosphere is one of the technologies with significant potential for implementation entirely and successfully. For the first time, we showed that the proposed concept allows over 3.5 billion tons of CO2 to be captured annually directly from the atmosphere, which makes even up 6.9% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The value constitutes enough high CO2 reduction to consider the concept as one of the applicable technologies allowing to decelerate global warming. Additional advantages of the presented concept are its global nature, it allows for the reduction of CO2 from all emission sources, regardless of its type and location on earth, and the fact that it will simultaneously lower the air temperature, contribute to oxygen production, and reduce dust in the environment.
