Based on reliable $ab\:initio$ computations and the numerical renormalization group method, systematic studies on a two-dimensional GaSe monolayer with a Co adatom have been carried out. It is shown that the stable lowest-energy configuration of the system involves the Co adatom located over Ga atom. For such configuration, it is demonstrated that the electronic and magnetic properties of the system can be effectively controlled by means of external factors, such as magnetic field, gate voltage or temperature. Moreover, if properly tuned, the GaSe-Co system can also exhibit the Kondo effect. The development of the Kondo phenomenon is revealed in the local density of states of the Co adatom, its magnetic field dependence, which presents the splitting of the Kondo peak, as well as in the temperature dependence of the conductance, which exhibits scaling typical of the spin one-half Kondo effect., Comment: 6 pages, 6 figures

In terms of the state-of-the-art first principle computational methods combined with the numerical renormalization group technique the spectroscopic properties of Co adatoms deposited on silicene are analyzed. By establishing an effective low-energy Hamiltonian based on first principle calculations, we study the behavior of the local density of states of Co adatom on external parameters, such as magnetic field and gating. It is shown that the Kondo resonance with the Kondo temperature of the order of a few Kelvins can emerge by fine-tuning the chemical potential. The evolution and splitting of the Kondo peak with external magnetic field is also analyzed. Furthermore, it is shown that the spin polarization of adatom's spectral function in the presence of magnetic field can be relatively large, and it is possible to tune the polarization and its sign by electrical means.

We demonstrate how ab initio cluster calculations including the full Coulomb vertex can be done in the basis of the localized, generalized Wannier orbitals which describe the low-energy density functional (LDA) band structure of the infinite crystal, e.g. the transition metal 3d and oxygen 2p orbitals. The spatial extend of our 3d Wannier orbitals (orthonormalized Nth order muffin-tin orbitals) is close to that found for atomic Hartree-Fock orbitals. We define Ligand orbitals as those linear combinations of the O 2p Wannier orbitals which couple to the 3d orbitals for the chosen cluster. The use of ligand orbitals allows for a minimal Hilbert space in multiplet ligand-field theory calculations, thus reducing the computational costs substantially. The result is a fast and simple ab initio theory, which can provide useful information about local properties of correlated insulators. We compare results for NiO, MnO and SrTiO3 with x-ray absorption, inelastic x-ray scattering, and photoemission experiments. The multiplet ligand field theory parameters found by our ab initio method agree within ~10% to known experimental values.

The in-plane lattice constants of close-packed planes of fcc and hcp Ni and Co match that of graphite almost perfectly so that they share a common two dimensional reciprocal space. Their electronic structures are such that they overlap in this reciprocal space for one spin direction only allowing us to predict perfect spin filtering for interfaces between graphite and (111) fcc or (0001) hcp Ni or Co. First-principles calculations of the scattering matrix show that the spin filtering is quite insensitive to amounts of interface roughness and disorder which drastically influence the spin-filtering properties of conventional magnetic tunnel junctions or interfaces between transition metals and semiconductors. When a single graphene sheet is adsorbed on these open $d$-shell transition metal surfaces, its characteristic electronic structure, with topological singularities at the K points in the two dimensional Brillouin zone, is destroyed by the chemical bonding. Because graphene bonds only weakly to Cu which has no states at the Fermi energy at the K point for either spin, the electronic structure of graphene can be restored by dusting Ni or Co with one or a few monolayers of Cu while still preserving the ideal spin injection property., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

We present the formalism and demonstrate the use of the overlapping muffin-tin approximation (OMTA). This fits a full potential to a superposition of spherically symmetric short-ranged potential wells plus a constant. For one-electron potentials of this form, the standard multiple-scattering methods can solve Schr\"{o}dingers' equation correctly to 1st order in the potential overlap. Choosing an augmented-plane-wave method as the source of the full potential, we illustrate the procedure for diamond-structured Si. First, we compare the potential in the Si-centered OMTA with the full potential, and then compare the corresponding OMTA $N$-th order muffin-tin orbital and full-potential LAPW band structures. We find that the two latter agree qualitatively for a wide range of overlaps and that the valence bands have an rms deviation of 20 meV/electron for 30% radial overlap. Smaller overlaps give worse potentials and larger overlaps give larger 2nd-order errors of the multiple-scattering method. Based upon the observations (i) that their in-plane lattice constants match almost perfectly and (ii) that their electronic structures overlap in reciprocal space for one spin direction only, we predict perfect spin filtering for interfaces between graphite and (111) fcc or (0001) hcp Ni or Co. The spin filtering is quite insensitive to roughness and disorder. The formation of a chemical bond between graphite and the open $d$-shell transition metals that might complicate or even prevent spin injection into a single graphene sheet can be simply prevented by dusting Ni or Co with one or a few monolayers of Cu while still preserving the ideal spin injection property.

As devices are reduced in size, interfaces start to dominate electrical transport making it essential to be able to describe reliably how they transmit and reflect electrons. For a number of nearly perfectly lattice-matched materials, we calculate from first-principles the dependence of the interface transparency on the crystal orientation. Quite remarkably, the largest anisotropy is predicted for interfaces between the prototype free-electron materials silver and aluminium for which a massive factor of two difference between (111) and (001) interfaces is found.

A systematic, quantitative study of the effect of interface roughness and disorder on the magnetoresistance of FeCo$|$vacuum$|$FeCo magnetic tunnel junctions is presented based upon parameter-free electronic structure calculations. Surface roughness is found to have a very strong effect on the spin-polarized transport while that of disorder in the leads (leads consisting of a substitutional alloy) is weaker but still sufficient to suppress the huge tunneling magneto-resistance (TMR) predicted for ideal systems.

Details are presented of an efficient formalism for calculating transmission and reflection matrices from first principles in layered materials. Within the framework of spin density functional theory and using tight-binding muffin-tin orbitals, scattering matrices are determined by matching the wave-functions at the boundaries between leads which support well-defined scattering states and the scattering region. The calculation scales linearly with the number of principal layers N in the scattering region and as the cube of the number of atoms H in the lateral supercell. For metallic systems for which the required Brillouin zone sampling decreases as H increases, the final scaling goes as H^2*N. In practice, the efficient basis set allows scattering regions for which H^{2}*N ~ 10^6 to be handled. The method is illustrated for Co/Cu multilayers and single interfaces using large lateral supercells (up to 20x20) to model interface disorder. Landauer's formula relates the conductance of a quantum wire or interface to transmission probabilities. Total transmission probabilities are frequently calculated using Green function techniques and an expression first derived by Caroli. Alternatively, partial transmission probabilities can be calculated from the scattering wave functions that are obtained by matching the wave functions in the scattering region to the Bloch modes of ideal bulk leads. An elegant technique for doing this, formulated originally by Ando, is here generalized to any Hamiltonian that can be represented in tight-binding form. A more compact expression for the transmission matrix elements is derived and it is shown how all the Green function results can be derived from the mode matching technique. We illustrate this for a simple model which can be studied analytically, and for an Fe|vacuum|Fe tunnel junction which we study using first-principles calculations., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

The interface-induced magnetization damping of thin ferromagnetic films in contact with normal-metal layers is calculated from first principles for clean and disordered Fe/Au and Co/Cu interfaces. Interference effects arising from coherent scattering turn out to be very small, consistent with a very small magnetic coherence length. Because the mixing conductances which govern the spin transfer are to a good approximation real valued, the spin pumping can be described by an increased Gilbert damping factor but an unmodified gyromagnetic ratio. The spin-dependence of the interface resistance between ferromagnetic Fe and InAs is calculated from first-principles for specular and disordered (001) interfaces. Because of the symmetry mismatch in the minority-spin channel, the specular interface acts as an efficient spin filter with a transmitted current polarisation between 98 an 89%. The resistance of a specular interface in the diffusive regime is comparable to the resistance of a few microns of bulk InAs. Symmetry-breaking arising from interface disorder reduces the spin asymmetry substantially and we conclude that efficient spin injection from Fe into InAs can only be realized using high quality epitaxial interfaces., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Within the framework of a two-band tight-binding model, we have performed calculations of giant magnetoresistance, exchange coupling and thermoelectric power (TEP) for a system consisting of three magnetic layers separated by two non-magnetic spacers with the first two magnetic layers strongly antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled. We have shown how does the GMR relate with the corresponding regions of magnetic structure phase diagrams and computed some relevant hysteresis loops, too. The GMR may take negative values for specific layers thicknesses, and the TEP reveals quite pronounced oscillations around a negative bias., Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, submited to Journal of Magnetism and Magnetic Materials

We have found that some periods of interlayer exchange coupling (IEC) oscillations as a function of cap-layer (CL) thickness may be suppressed if the in-plane extremal spanning vectors of the cap- and ferromagnet-materials Fermi surfaces do not coincide. The suppression of the IEC oscillations vs. the CL thickness holds also if the magnetic slab thickness tends to infinity. On the one hand, we have shown by means of very simple arguments that apart from the well-known selection rules concerning the spacer- and cap-layers, another one related with the magnetic sublayers has to be fulfilled in order that the interlayer coupling oscillations $vs.$ CL thickness could survive. On the other hand, the distribution of induced magnetic moments across the non-magnetic cap- and spacer-sublayers have been computed and shown to reveal the underlying periodicity of the materials they are made of (i.e. related to their bulk Fermi surfaces) independently of whether or not the selection rules are fulfilled. It is shown that the current-perpendicular-to-plane giant magneto-resistance (CPP-GMR) oscillations, in the ballistic regime, are strongly correlated with those of the exchange coupling (J). Both the GMR and J are treated on equal footing within a rigorously solvable tight-binding single-band model. The strong correlation consists in sharing asymptotically the same period, determined by the spacer Fermi surface, and oscillating with varying spacer thickness predominantly in opposite phases., Comment: 13 Pages, RevTex, 5 Figures included
