Using the formalism of Newton hyperplane arrangements, we resolve the open questions regarding angle rank left over from [DKRV20]. As a consequence we end up generalizing theorems of Lenstra--Zarhin and Tankeev proving several new cases of the Tate conjecture for abelian varieties over finite fields. We define a notion of height for rational points with respect to a vector bundle on a proper algebraic stack with finite diagonal over a global field, which generalizes the usual notion for rational points on projective varieties. We explain how to compute this height for various stacks of interest (for instance: classifying stacks of finite groups, symmetric products of varieties, moduli stacks of abelian varieties, weighted projective spaces). In many cases our uniform definition reproduces ways already in use for measuring the complexity of rational points, while in others it is something new. Finally, we formulate a conjecture about the number of rational points of bounded height (in our sense) on a stack X, which specializes to the Baytev-Manin conjecture when X is a scheme and to Malle's conjecture when X is the classifying stack of a finite group., Comment: 61 pages; comments very welcome

We discuss the $\ell$-adic case of Mazur's "Program B" over $\mathbb{Q}$, the problem of classifying the possible images of $\ell$-adic Galois representations attached to elliptic curves $E$ over $\mathbb{Q}$, equivalently, classifying the rational points on the corresponding modular curves. The primes $\ell=2$ and $\ell\ge 13$ are addressed by prior work, so we focus on the remaining primes $\ell = 3, 5, 7, 11$. For each of these $\ell$, we compute the directed graph of arithmetically maximal $\ell$-power level modular curves $X_H$, compute explicit equations for all but three of them, and classify the rational points on all of them except $X_{{\rm ns}}^{+}(N)$, for $N = 27, 25, 49, 121$, and two level $49$ curves of genus $9$ whose Jacobians have analytic rank $9$. Aside from the $\ell$-adic images that are known to arise for infinitely many $\bar{\mathbb{Q}}$-isomorphism classes of elliptic curves $E/\mathbb{Q}$, we find only 22 exceptional images that arise for any prime $\ell$ and any $E/\mathbb{Q}$ without complex multiplication; these exceptional images are realized by 20 non-CM rational $j$-invariants. We conjecture that this list of 22 exceptional images is complete and show that any counterexamples must arise from unexpected rational points on $X_{\rm ns}^+(\ell)$ with $\ell\ge 19$, or one of the six modular curves noted above. This yields a very efficient algorithm to compute the $\ell$-adic images of Galois for any elliptic curve over $\mathbb{Q}$. In an appendix with John Voight we generalize Ribet's observation that simple abelian varieties attached to newforms on $\Gamma_1(N)$ are of ${\rm GL}_2$-type; this extends Kolyvagin's theorem that analytic rank zero implies algebraic rank zero to isogeny factors of the Jacobian of $X_H$., Comment: Minor corrections; 71 pages; 22 tables

Let $K$ be a number field, and let $E/K$ be an elliptic curve over $K$. The Mordell--Weil theorem asserts that the $K$-rational points $E(K)$ of $E$ form a finitely generated abelian group. In this work, we complete the classification of the finite groups which appear as the torsion subgroup of $E(K)$ for $K$ a cubic number field. To do so, we determine the cubic points on the modular curves $X_1(N)$ for \[N = 21, 22, 24, 25, 26, 28, 30, 32, 33, 35, 36, 39, 45, 65, 121.\] As part of our analysis, we determine the complete list of $N$ for which $J_0(N)$ (resp., $J_1(N)$, resp., $J_1(2,2N)$) has rank 0. We also provide evidence to a generalized version of a conjecture of Conrad, Edixhoven, and Stein by proving that the torsion on $J_1(N)(\mathbb{Q})$ is generated by $\text{Gal}(\bar{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$-orbits of cusps of $X_1(N)_{\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$ for $N\leq 55$, $N \neq 54$., Comment: 24 pages. v2: we corrected an error in Theorem 3.1

We consider the distribution of the Galois groups $\operatorname{Gal}(K^{\operatorname{un}}/K)$ of maximal unramified extensions as $K$ ranges over $\Gamma$-extensions of $\mathbb{Q}$ or $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$. We prove two properties of $\operatorname{Gal}(K^{\operatorname{un}}/K)$ coming from number theory, which we use as motivation to build a probability distribution on profinite groups with these properties. In Part I, we build such a distribution as a limit of distributions on $n$-generated profinite groups. In Part II, we prove as $q\rightarrow\infty$, agreement of $\operatorname{Gal}(K^{\operatorname{un}}/K)$ as $K$ varies over totally real $\Gamma$-extensions of $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ with our distribution from Part I, in the moments that are relatively prime to $q(q-1)|\Gamma|$. In particular, we prove for every finite group $\Gamma$, in the $q\rightarrow\infty$ limit, the prime-to-$q(q-1)|\Gamma|$-moments of the distribution of class groups of totally real $\Gamma$-extensions of $\mathbb{F}_q(t)$ agree with the prediction of the Cohen--Lenstra--Martinet heuristics., Comment: contains minor corrections and updates from the previous version

Faltings showed that "arithmetic Kodaira--Spencer classes" satisfying a certain compatibility axiom cannot exist. By modifying his definitions slightly, we show that the Deligne--Illusie classes satisfy what could be considered an "arithmetic Kodaira--Spencer" compatibility condition. Afterwards we discuss a "wittfinitesimal Torelli problem" and its relation to CM Jacobians.

For a scheme $X$ defined over the length $2$ $p$-typical Witt vectors $W_2(k)$ of a characteristic $p$ field, we introduce total $p$-differentials which interpolate between Frobenius-twisted differentials and Buium's $p$-differentials. They form a sheaf over the reduction $X_0$, and behave as if they were the sheaf of differentials of $X$ over a deeper base below $W_2(k)$. This allows us to construct the analogues of Gauss-Manin connections and Kodaira-Spencer classes as in the Katz-Oda formalism. We describe recent work connecting combinatorics and tropical/non-Archimedean geometry to Diophantine geometry, particularly the uniformity conjectures for rational points on curves and for torsion packets of curves. Let $X$ be a curve of genus $g\geq 2$ over a number field $F$ of degree $d = [F:Q]$. The conjectural existence of a uniform bound $N(g,d)$ on the number $\#X(F)$ of $F$-rational points of $X$ is an outstanding open problem in arithmetic geometry, known by [CHM97] to follow from the Bombieri--Lang conjecture. A related conjecture posits the existence of a uniform bound $N_{{\rm tors},\dagger}(g,d)$ on the number of geometric torsion points of the Jacobian $J$ of $X$ which lie on the image of $X$ under an Abel--Jacobi map. For fixed $X$ this quantity was conjectured to be finite by Manin--Mumford, and was proved to be so by Raynaud [Ray83]. We give an explicit uniform bound on $\#X(F)$ when $X$ has Mordell--Weil rank $r\leq g-3$. This generalizes recent work of Stoll on uniform bounds on hyperelliptic curves of small rank to arbitrary curves. Using the same techniques, we give an explicit, unconditional uniform bound on the number of $F$-rational torsion points of $J$ lying on the image of $X$ under an Abel--Jacobi map. We also give an explicit uniform bound on the number of geometric torsion points of $J$ lying on $X$ when the reduction type of $X$ is highly degenerate. Generalizing the classical theorems of Max Noether and Petri, we describe generators and relations for the canonical ring of a stacky curve, including an explicit Gr\"obner basis. We work in a general algebro-geometric context and treat log canonical and spin canonical rings as well. How many rational points are there on a random algebraic curve of large genus $g$ over a given finite field $\mathbb{F}_q$? We propose a heuristic for this question motivated by a (now proven) conjecture of Mumford on the cohomology of moduli spaces of curves; this heuristic suggests a Poisson distribution with mean $q+1+1/(q-1)$. Using the notions of open/closed subtopoi of SGA, we define a notion of cohomology with support in a closed subscheme on the overconvergent site, and show that this agrees with the classic notion of rigid cohomology support in a closed subscheme.

We give a classification of all possible $2$-adic images of Galois representations associated to elliptic curves over $\mathbb{Q}$. In their paper which introduced Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology, Monsky and Washnitzer described conditions under which the definition can be adapted to give integral cohomology groups. It seems to be well-known among experts that their construction always gives well-defined integral cohomology groups, but this fact also does not appear to be explicitly written down anywhere. In this paper, we prove that the integral Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology groups are well-defined, for any nonsingular affine variety over a perfect field of characteristic p. We then compare these cohomology groups with overconvergent de Rham-Witt cohomology. It was shown earlier that if the affine variety has small dimension relative to the characteristic of the ground field, then the cohomology groups are isomorphic. We extend this result to show that for any nonsingular affine variety, regardless of dimension, we have an isomorphism between integral Monsky-Washnitzer cohomology and overconvergent de Rham-Witt cohomology in degrees which are small relative to the characteristic., Comment: 7 pages

We describe a probability distribution on isomorphism classes of principally quasi-polarized p-divisible groups over a finite field k of characteristic p which can reasonably be thought of as "uniform distribution," and we compute the distribution of various statistics (p-corank, a-number, etc.) of p-divisible groups drawn from this distribution. It is then natural to ask to what extent the p-divisible groups attached to a randomly chosen hyperelliptic curve (resp. curve, resp. abelian variety) over k are uniformly distributed in this sense. For instance, one can ask whether the proportion of genus-g curves over F_p whose Jacobian is ordinary approaches the limit that such a heuristic would predict. This heuristic is analogous to conjectures of Cohen-Lenstra type for fields k of characteristic other than p, in which case the random p-divisible group is defined by a random matrix recording the action of Frobenius. Extensive numerical investigation reveals some cases of agreement with the heuristic and some interesting discrepancies.
